Message from the desk of

Chairman, Sikh Human Development Foundation The objectives of Sikh Human Development Foundation (SHDF) follow the essential principles of Guru Nanak’s following dictum: gur prswdI ividAw vIcwrY piV piV pwvY mwnu ] Awpw mDy Awpu prgwisAw pwieAw AMimRqu nwmu ]1] (SGGS: 1329) The future belongs to our younger generation and they are the inheritors of the above-noted enlightenment principle which has acquired urgency in this age of technology. Sikh Human Development Foundation seeks to provide a strong and durable foundation for our youth – those who are outstanding in their studies but are hampered from pursuing higher education due to lack of funding. Helping them not only creates a bright future for them, but often for their whole families, and even for a village or a community. In this digital age, higher education alone can help our youth get decent jobs or be gainfully self-employed. Would it not be a tragedy if a young aspiring girl or boy in Punjab, who is intelligent, hard-working, determined, but cannot reach her/his goal, just because she/he is trapped in utter poverty? Unfortunately, there are thousands of such children in Punjab. SHDF is a team of professionals working in an honorary capacity. We are partners with like-minded NGOs in India with network of volunteers in Punjab. Our selection procedures for the scholarship program are rigorous. SHDF works closely with a reputable organization in India, namely, Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council, New Delhi, to effectively manage and monitor its scholarship and human development program. Beginning in 2014, we are now holding workshops on soft skills and personality development for our scholarship recipients. SHDF has awarded more than 6,400 college scholarships to students, all of whom are from families below the poverty line. About 3,600 have graduated; most are in good jobs and are helping their siblings. Some are also helping other needy students. A rapidly rising number of eligible applicants are putting their faith in SHDF and seeking financial help. SHDF Board thanks all donors for their valuable contributions. The challenge is rather big and we need wider and deeper community support. Education has transforming power and a multiplier effect. If they succeed, we all succeed. We need your help. They need your help.

Gajinder Singh Ahuja Chairman, SHDF 3

Student Messages ...

Robindeep Singh, B.Sc. Agriculture: Having an agriculture background, I am well aware of the difficulties in a farmer’s life. I want to become an Agriculture Field Officer and want to uplift the declined status of farming in India with innovative techniques. The award (SHDF Scholarships) is an important push for me to continue my Bachelors of Science in Agriculture. I am very thankful for the award which definitely will help to alleviate my financial burden.

Samarpreet Kaur, B.Tech. - Civil Engineering: My goal is to achieve something that can keep my parents’ name alive. I want to complete my degree and wish to crack the Civil services exam. I hail from Jammu and Kashmir and I lost my parents recently. My relatives are not supporting me and I have to rely on SHDF Scholarships. Your support will assist me in paying off my university fee and will allow me to focus on furthering my professional and academic career. Thank you so much for the selfless help, it’s enabling me to stand on my own.

Arshdeep Kaur, B.E. (Mechanical): I am pleased and very thankful to have received this scholarship, as it will have a significant impact on my financial wellbeing. I lost my father in 2015 and my mother is supporting us through stitching clothes. It’s been very difficult to survive on meager earnings. This scholarship is going to assist me with my educational expenses during my engineering degree and take me one step closer to my career goals. Thank you SHDF for supporting me.

Tanveer Kaur, Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA): I am currently pursuing a B.C.A. Degree Course. In the upcoming years after graduation, I am aiming to work for educating the needy youth. Almost 30 percent of India is still illiterate. Life is precious and, I believe, I was born to provide some values to lives of many in need. My father died in 2008 and it’s been very difficult for our family to survive on a meager income. I want to develop good, productive characters for India. I am truly blessed to be a recipient of the SHDF Scholarships. 10

Student Messages ...

Bikram Singh, MBBS: I am sincerely honored to have been selected as the recipient of this scholarship. I really appreciate it! This scholarship has helped me to get one step closer to serve humanity as an MBBS Doctor. With just 1.5 Acre of farming land, it’s been extremely difficult for my father to support his family, especially his children who are getting a quality education. Your support lifted the morale of my family and for sure, I will pay back in many folds to the suffering humanity. May Waheguru bless SHDF with health and wealth so that they can support the pious project of “Sewa”. Inderjeet Kaur, MCA: I am extremely humbled and grateful for your generosity in choosing me for this scholarship, which will greatly help me to fund my higher education. I am pursuing a Masters Degree course in Computer Application and I would like to be in a Teaching field. Being a single parent-child, it’s been very difficult to think big and take risks. My father died two years back and my mother is a laborer, with a very small income. Receiving this scholarship is certainly a loud, affirming yes to my academic career and for that, I am beyond grateful.

Simranjeet Singh, M.Sc. in Computer Science: I am so honored and thankful to be a recipient of SHDF Scholarships. When I found out that I had won this scholarship, I was not only elated but I cried. I cried because I was in extreme financial difficulty and the scholarship gave me a glimmer of hope. My father always wanted me to be a successful IT Engineer but just after his death, everything scattered. My mother feels proud of the Sikh Diaspora who still think of us in Punjab.

Manpreet Kaur, BCA: While I was growing up in Burj Hari Singh Village, a small village in Ludhiana District, I never would have dreamed of having the opportunities that I have been so fortunate to receive. Winning an SHDF Scholarship is an honor. SHDF scholarship is much more than a financial aid enabling me to continue pursuing my academic goals. You stopped me from giving up on my dream, as my father cannot afford the education of my siblings along with my higher education. Thank you so much for nurturing me to stand up on my feet. 11

Bhai Jaitajee Foundation (India) Transforming Lives

Message

Bhai Jaitajee Foundation India is happy to be associated with the Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council supported by Sikh Human Development Foundation USA. The Welfare Council is helping BJF by providing scholarships to bright students to enter and complete professional courses in prestigious government Engineering and Medical Institutions. Till now nine students have availed these scholarships to fund their studies. BJF started its mission to extend help to students in remote hinterland of Punjab where accessibility and financial affordability posed a challenge to bright socioeconomically marginalized students after 10th class. We started a free residential coaching institute to prepare for IIT/JEE and NEET along with regular schooling for XII CBSE Board. Each year we have been able to send our students to IITs, IISER, NITs, IIITs, PEC, AIIMS and State Medical Colleges. Till now more than 100 students have benefitted. The financial assistance provided by Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council and SHDF has helped our brilliant but economically challenged students to complete their studies in top notch institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Government Medical College Amritsar while we could enable them only to qualify for entry. We are grateful to both organizations–The Nishkam Welfare Council and The Sikh Human Development Corporation. This is the essence of Sikh Guru’s teachings which is meticulously being carried out by Sikh Human Development Foundation USA and Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council. The ripple effect of this generosity will have a positive impact on the lives of many families in Punjab. May our association be further strengthened for the greater welfare of Punjabi youth. MESSAGE It is a matter of immense pleasure to know that Sikh Human Development Foundation (SHDF), USA along with Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council (Regd.), New Delhi, has been imparting, organizing and promoting the scholarships since 2000 in India. Today, their strategies not only align with the selfless initiative which has transformed many lives through education but promotes women’s empowerment as well. Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council started with few likeminded individuals who were moved by the suffering of widows, orphans and elders who lost everything in the horrific massacre of 1984. In those dark and hate-filled days, Nishkam volunteers worked selflessly and set a benchmark to work harder and definitely reach out to more people with improved quality of life. Daily, Sikhs recite the Ardaas which describes Waheguru as “Nimaneya de Maan, Nitaneya de Taan, Neouteya di Oaat, Niasraean de asray – meaning honour of the humble, might of the meek, help of the helpless, the hope of the hopeless. A sincere follower of the Guru tries to realize those divine virtues in his own life. This is what we see in the work of the Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council and Sikh Human Development Foundation– it is an effort to uplift, empower and alleviate suffering regardless of caste, creed or religion. Sangrur District, the area of Punjab in which our organization is active, is seriously affected by suicides by debt-ridden farmers. Thanks to SHDF, 27 children from suicide-affected families have graduated from college and are now able to earn and support their families. We are deeply grateful for their generous assistance and wish that both the organizations may achieve more milestones of success in the spirit of humanity.
