New Sales Manger for ATS Seed sees potential in tough times
and his role as store manager soon turned into grain and seed rep, covering the region and becoming familiar with many of Canterbury’s skilled cropping farmers. Canterbury is home for Craig, and he has travelled most of the region’s roads to talk with farmers, seed processors and merchants over the years. He appreciates the deep level of commitment and knowledge that resides in the country’s main seed growing region. After a decade with PGG he became something of a pioneer in rural retailing in Canterbury, greeting the new millennium as the sole contact point for AnchorMart.
A few decades ago Craig Rodgers found himself cutting his teeth in the agri-sector business deep in the dust of a PGG grain store in Ashburton. But it was not long before he was holding his hand up for the next challenge, and as a fresh faced 19 year old was soon managing that company’s Rakaia store. Today Craig has found himself re-connecting with grain and seed, taking up his new role as ATS Seed Sales Manager, based in Ashburton. His early days with PGG gave him an excellent insight to the region’s seed and grain sector

“It was just me, a laptop and my ute early on, before we even had any stores. At that stage it was before Fonterra had even existed. We then began building stores around the region, coming in very much as the new kids on the block.” After 16 years with the big co-operative he was keen for a change, and is excited by prospects and potential he sees within ATS Seed. “Over the years I had seen what ATS has been able to achieve in the region, working very much as a focussed co-operative with strong links to its members, while also fulfilling their strategy to bring prices down and be very competitive in the market place.” He believes it is an exciting time to be heading ATS’s six year old seed division, as farmers look harder than ever at pasture for a low cost feed input, and new varieties and hybrids continue

to hit the market at a rapid rate. “The slide in the dairy payout has been tough, but it has also focused farmers’ minds on where their most efficient, cheap feed source is, and that’s pasture.” He sees significant upside in farmers focussing on re-grassing in the most productive, persistent cultivars available, and ATS Seed’s ability to offer some straight up, unbiased and well-founded advice on what choices are the best.
