General Manager Operations

By Richard Rennie

It is hard to believe that we are already a third of the way through the year. With winter just around the corner, it is timely to take a closer look at fodder beet and the rapid growth in popularity of this product in recent years. Just five or six years ago only a couple of thousand hectares were planted compared to the 35,000ha planted nationwide last spring. Mid Canterbury and ATS were early players in the fodder beet market, and acceptance of this crop is still dominated by the South Island. The expectation is that it will continue to grow both locally and nationally, and will also spread from the predominantly local winter dairy grazing market to the beef and deer sectors as well. Plus ATS member Darryl Butterick gives us his views on fodder beet on page four and five. In this edition we focus on the importance of the correct management and transition of livestock and in particular dairy cows onto fodder beet. This starts with the testing of dry matter content, incorporating an effective transition onto the crop with limited fodder beet intake, and providing alternative feed sources. The added benefit of a managed transition onto fodder beet is that it will also help maximise the potential yield from your crop.

ATS and Breast Cancer Cure have teamed up to sell limited edition Dame Trelise Cooper designed gumboots. These gumboots are exclusively available from ATS with all proceeds going towards finding a cure for breast cancer. Make sure you read the story behind the gumboots on pages 26 - 27 and get yourself a pair. Thank you for your continued support, we look forward to seeing you soon.

How to get more out of your milk Reducing costs and improving milk income this season could be as easy as making a few simple changes to your dairy plant. As a bonus, you’ll end up milking more efficiently too. One change in particular has so many benefits it sounds too good to be true, from shortening milk-out time and reducing cup slip to lowering Somatic Cell Counts (SCC) and increasing milksolids yield. But those who have tried it say they’re well and truly convinced. Changing milking liners once they reach their use-by date also helps save power, labour and animal health costs and can increase yield while minimising the risk of costly grades. Farmers who change milking liners at the recommended lifespan of 2,500 milkings report immediate reduction in teat end damage as well as better SCC result, according to Skellerup National Manager Perry Davis. “Unfortunately because liners are hidden inside the cups, you can’t see what happens to them when they wear out. The first thing you might see instead is a cow kicking the cluster off, damaged teat ends or a surprisingly high Bulk Somatic Cell Count (BSCC) on the milk docket.” That’s because a worn, badly fitting liner can leave milk in the udder, slip-off the teat and/or leave noticeable rings at the top of the teat. Permanent teat damage is not only possible, but common. On top of that, any cracks in the rubber are likely to harbour bacteria. A good liner, well-fitted, is just the opposite, Perry says. It will completely

milk a cow out quickly and efficiently. It doesn’t slip, and it leaves the teats looking very similar in size and colour to how they looked before milking. On some large herd operations, liners reach 2,500 milkings and are changed as often as every two months as part of standard farm protocols to protect milk quality. That may sound excessive but when you look at the statistics, those properties are simply following best practice based on average liner changes. New Zealand dairy farmers expect their liners to last for about 4,900 milkings, or nearly twice their effective lifetime. Here’s an example of how to work out how many days until milking liners should be changed for maximum benefit: Step one: multiply the number of cows being milked by the number of milkings per day. Step two: divide the number in ‘Step one’ by the number of milking clusters in the milking plant.

ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY:

This is not only best practice, but more cost effective and efficient than cleaning and re-using filters because it takes less time to change out a new filter than it does to clean and dry old ones. When it comes to rubber tubing, regular change is again a good thing – every year for milk tubing, and every two years for air tubing. Perry Davis says the interior of milk tubing in particular can be degraded by milk fat and cleaning chemicals long before signs of damage can be seen from the outside. Worn out air tubing causes loss of vacuum, cup slippage and poor or partial milk out, none of which contributes to optimal milk harvesting. When you purchase $500 or more Skellerup milk liners during May, June and July, you go into win 1 of 3 $500 credits on your ATS account, terms and conditions apply. Call into your nearest ATS store or call ATS on 0800 BUY ATS (289 287) to purchase your milk liners today.

Step three: divide 2,500 by the number in ‘Step two’. This is the number of days between optimum liner changes. For 750 cows, milked twice a day in a 60 bale rotary plant, each cluster is milking 25 cows per day. Divide 2,500 by 25 and the answer is 100 days. This farm should change liners every 100 days (see www.2500change.co.nz for the calculator) Perry says farmers looking for efficiencies across their whole operation can implement other simple steps to get the best out of their milk harvesting this season. Fitting a new milk filter at every milking, for example, keeps sediment down and likewise reduces contaminants for better milk quality.

Maximise fodder beet potential with correct transition With the large area of fodder beet now grown throughout New Zealand, its benefits are now well recognised. To help ensure these benefits are realised it is crucial that correct animal transition onto the feed is carried out. As such, Bernardita Saldias who is a qualified nutritionist working for Seed Force has outlined some key information regarding what happens during this period and its importance. “In a dairy system fodder beet is a high quality feed that can be used for a range of purposes. Use of the crop has increased rapidly, driven by the high yields and subsequent low cost (6-10c/kg DM) for a high metabolisable energy (ME) of 12 MJ/ kg DM. While fodder beet is high in sugar content, it is relatively low in crude protein, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), calcium and phosphorus. Ruminants ferment the energy rich carbohydrates that are the dominant component of their diet to a family of acids, termed volatile fatty acids and these are then used as the energy source by the animal. Some carbohydrates; sugars, starch – ferment quickly while others e.g. fibre – ferment slowly. This process takes place in the rumen and there are many sophisticated systems that regulate this process in order to prevent a build-up of acids (commonly referred to as ‘acidosis’). For these ‘safety’

systems to operate there is also a certain minimum dietary protein and fibre required. The rumen is well designed to adapt to changes in the diet. To optimise these safety processes and ensure the maximum benefit from any given diet this rumen adaptation needs to take adequate time. There are also biochemical and neurological feedback loops beyond the rumen in animals that ‘learn’ to regulate the rate of intake of feeds. So for the ruminant to adapt to the feed there are both rumen and ‘non-rumen’ factors that need consideration. Rapidly fermenting carbohydrates fed to a ruminant that has not had the time to adapt to the diet, particularly if the diet is lacking the minimum fibre content required, can lead to excess acid production that can overwhelm the safety systems and produces acidosis”, explains Bernardita. There are multiple requirements, which occur during transition, and this is the critical point of effective fodder beet use. First, we slowly increase the amount of fodder beet the cattle are consuming over a 14-day period to allow the rumen to adapt. This requires measurement of the crop yield, and careful allocation. Secondly, we are also allowing them to ‘learn’ to physically eat it in large amounts – this takes time and is necessary even if stock have previous experience of fodder beet, but also to ‘learn’ how to eat it safely by regulating their own intake to prevent acidosis by recognising the feedback signals from the rumen. This requires sufficient space and access to the fodder beet and sufficient time to get used to it. Thirdly, as we are restricting their intake of

ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY:

fodder beet at this time, we must therefore be feeding them something else to keep the energy supply up to avoid hunger driving cattle to break out of their fodder beet allocation and to ensure adequate intakes to provide the necessary dietary protein and fibre are achieved with this supplement. This requires both a suitably fibrous yet palatable feed and a system of supplying it to cattle that enables access and eating time. Finally, on a herd level we will often have to balance the need to restrict fodder beet and encourage supplement intakes with the need to somewhat restrict overall intake enough to prompt all cattle to maximise fodder beet consumption, as there will always be a small number slow to this”, Bernardita says. By taking the time to transition animals correctly onto fodder beet will help ensure the maximum potential is realised from this exciting crop. If you are considering incorporating Seed Force fodder or sugar beet into your system this year there are some key steps that need to be carried out. Paddock selection is important, and take note of previous chemical history. A soil test will need to be conducted, if one has not already been done this autumn to ensure paddock is suitable and pH is adequate, any deficiencies will need to be remedied. Discuss Seed Force cultivar options with ATS to determine which one will suit your requirements and desired end use. For more information on Seed Force fodder beet, contact ATS Seed or your ATS Arable & Pastoral Representative today on 0800 BUY ATS (289 287). Photo: Dairy cows on Seed Force fodder beet.

Driving costs down for future generations with long term savings Farmers are experts in reading and working in the environmental conditions that they are exposed to. So why do we seem to have forgotten about the old traditional ways that used renewable energy in the forms of windmills and Archimedes screws for example, to generate energy for ourselves? We seem content to continue paying for rising power prices annually, when there are tried and tested ways to mitigate these effectively. It’s expensive to run a business and there are a lot of fixed costs you can’t reduce, but you can control your energy spend through both low cost changes and cost effective capital investment. The competitiveness of farming in the current market makes it critical for farm owners to be maximising the use of available technologies to be able to better maintain that competitive edge. If your farm or business uses more electricity than others to produce the same amount of product, you could be wasting electricity, making you less competitive and leaving you exposed when electricity prices rise. Unfortunately there isn’t one silver bullet that can fix the problem of the ever increasing cost of energy. However we can use the old adage ‘reduce and reuse’ to control your current energy usage and now we can add ‘generate new’ to the adage to help give your business that edge. Photo: Solar panels

Solar, wind and hydro electricity generation are not new but it is now economic to consider generating your own power to compliment your current supply. This not only reduces your overall energy cost, it also gives you an alternative energy supply to provide additional operational security in the event of loss or increases in current supply charges. In most cases now the return on investment (ROI) for a typical solar PV system is down to 5-7 years on a system that will continue to generate at 85% efficiency for 25 years minimum. This is giving confidence to business owners take up the renewable energy opportunities that not so long ago were almost double that ROI. This ROI period can also be reduced on a scalable fashion by adding (or deducting) from the capital outlay, the annual 10%-13% that you may write off against depreciation. The following information will help you to better understand the advantages and restrictions of renewable energy and where to get assistance and advice for your project. Solar photo-voltaic electricity generation: Grid-connected solar electricity can be used locally thus reducing transmission/ distribution losses. Once the initial capital cost of building a solar power plant has been spent, operating costs are extremely low compared to existing power technologies, basically zero. When grid-connected, solar electric generation can displace the highest cost

ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY:

21 IN SEASON

electricity during times of peak demand (in most climatic regions), can reduce grid loading, and can eliminate the need for local battery power for use in times of darkness and high local demand; such application is encouraged by net metering. Time-of-use net metering can be highly favourable to small photovoltaic systems. Solar electric generation is economically superior where grid connection or fuel transport is difficult, costly or impossible. Examples include satellites, island communities or small towns, remote locations and ocean vessels. Facilities can operate with little maintenance or intervention after initial setup. How can you tell if the panel you have been quoted is a good one? Look for a panel supplier that has tested the panel and it has passed the TUV longterm sequential test. This test is one of the harshest quality and product longevity tests developed specifically for the solar industry. Renewable Solutions Ltd in New Zealand are the only representative in New Zealand of solar panel that has a supplier that has passed all of these tests, the manufacturer is Kyocera Solar (Japan). Any solar system proposal needs to be delivering a ROI within 7 to 7 ½ years maximum, otherwise the supplier should be assessing your overall energy ‘footprint’ and usage model, to assist you with achieving this goal, Renewable Solutions are experts in this regard. It is quite plausible to design a fully ‘offthe-grid’ farm, of whatever scale, but this is obviously to be rationalised against the ROI. The purpose and succession plans, and possibly the ideological positioning of the farm owners also need to be taken into consideration. Going ‘off-the-grid’ is not generally the aim of any consideration with regard to renewable energy for a farming enterprise. It is always seen as an opportunity to significantly reduce the reliance on national supply networks and their fees. Small to medium scaled solar farms are also a real opportunity for small towns and communities to be significantly independent with regard to energy, Perhaps this is our logical future too, being a widely scattered and sparsely populated country. If you are interested in finding out more on please contact Tracey Gordon, solar energy panels please ATS Energy Account Manager on 0800 BUY ATS (289 287) for further details.
