AIFC v Desford - Saturday 31st August 2013 - www.ashbyivanhoefc.com
CHAIRMANS WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to the NFU Sports Ground for today’s 1st team game and may I extend a warm welcome to our visitors Desford FC and to their players, supporters and officials. May I start by saying that I have been amazed at how many of you have turned up to watch the opening games at home and I know that this means a great deal to the players and the atmosphere that has been created is really exciting. Thank you for your support and may it continue and grow over the season. The game today will be another bench mark in how well the players are responding to the new management team of Tony, Karl, Neil and Martin. I know how much Tony and Karl want to move this club forward on the field and the challenge for them is to keep the players focused on going about their business in the right way and I am grateful that they are steering the football side forward for the club and long may that continue. The Reserves kick off their season today with an away trip to Desford Reserves and I wish Craig and Paul and the players the very best for the season ahead. The Midweek Under 18’s kicked off their season on Wednesday night and credit goes to Alex too for his continued work with the youth team players and it remains my belief that we are a stronger, more sustainable club today as a result of the work Alex has done over the last few years since taking our very first Under 18’s team. The Junior section numbers have reached an all time club high this season with over 120 registered junior players which has doubled in the last two seasons. I know that all of the Junior coaches have been excited about taking their respective teams training sessions over the summer and I hope that you will come along and support the junior teams when they feature down here at the NFU Sports Ground. A huge thanks to Matthew Lester who has created our new look matchday magazine and I am sure you will agree that he is doing a great job. And finally may I pass on my sincere apologies and also thanks to Susan Pepper, Karen Wearmouth, Vicky and Wendy Buckley and Sue Smith for keeping your men away from you over the last few months as they undertook, yet again, a mammoth task of transforming the ground we see developing before us. They continue to move us forward off the field and let’s hope that the players can re-pay us all with moving us forward on the field, starting today. Enjoy the game and good luck to our boys. FIRST TEAM UPDATE Welcome to Ashby Ivanhoe FC, as predicted Allexton and New Park FC was a difficult opponent: the first 30 minutes proved to be very difficult for Ashby. However, Hodgy, our goalkeeper, was in good form and kept them at bay with several outstanding saves. The last third of the first half, we began to get to grips with our opponents and broke the dead lock before half time. During the second half, we were a much improved team. Unfortunately due to the lack of concentration from a set piece, Allexton and New Park drew level. The introduction of Jamie Yeomans improved our forward play and we could have taken all three points if our decision-making was better. Upon reflection, I felt that a draw was a fair result. Caterpillar away proved to be a difficult fixture due to the weather conditions. However, we got to grips with the conditions very quickly, and we took the lead with a well-taken goal by Gibson. The second half was more of the same and we went further in front and at times our play was exceptional, scoring three welltaken team goals. Unfortunately, once again, due to the lack of concentration, our opponents were able to score. Monday’s game against Melton Mowbray FC proved to be a very difficult game: we started very slowly whereas Melton Mowbray were bright and imaginative. Melton missed numerous chances to take the lead, however, against the run of play, we took the lead with a well-taken strike from Stinger. During the second half, we found it very difficult to deliver any passage of play. On reflection, due to our ‘never die’ attitude, I believe we deserved to win the match. Our game today against Desford will once again be a challenging test for our players. Desford are flying high at the moment: they have won all four of the fixtures and they are at the top of our league. Notoriously, Desford are a very strong, disciplined side and over the last few seasons in this division, they have caused many upsets. I believe this fixture is the tie of the weekend. RESERVE TEAM UPDATE Well it has been what seems a long period since we played our last league game of the 2012/13 campaign, in what myself and Foz would call a ‘mixed bag’ of a first season managing the Reserves. At times we were excellent, but equally as often we were a long way off our potential and this is something we are aiming at in the forthcoming season, to perform to the best of our abilities week in week out, with as steady squad of players as possible. It is also vital for the future of the club that the players from the U18’s get a chance to develop. It is a fundamental goal of the club to concentrate on the local young talent that we hold in our ranks, and to make sure that these young players get a chance to shine for their local football club. The reserve side has a massive part to play in this development, more so than ever, and it will be apparent this season when you watch our games that the average age will be well down in the low 20’s, maybe even late teens on occasions. Our season kicks off today away at Desford, and from what I have seen up to now from the pre-season period in terms of training and friendlies, I am optimistic at making a strong start to the new campaign. Since the arrival of Tony, Karl and Martin, the club has been ‘kicked back into life’ with superb numbers attending training, as well as a high number of youth team players also looking to make the grade this season with the seniors. Myself and Foz have taken a step back since they have arrived, to allow the new management time to assess all of the players from the seniors and the Under 18’s and to give everyone a fair chance to impress and to make a claim for a 1st team spot. It is from this that it can be seen that certain lads have really put it in this pre-season, and indeed, through sheer hard work and determination a couple of regular reserve players from last year have made the step up and have been performing well with the firsts – again great to see. So fingers crossed for this season! Our goal is to finish higher than last year in the league, but more importantly to continue to develop the reserves to feed the first team with good back up players that can easily slot in as and when required – and to hopefully provide future 1st team regulars for years to come! Good luck to Tony, Karl and the lads today, and especially to last season’s reserve players who have stepped up to the plate this season and now find themselves in today’s 1st team squad. To end my notes I must once again thank everyone who has worked countless hours at the NFU over the summer months. Amongst other things, the pitch has been moved, dugouts rebuilt, perimeter fencing, goalposts, ball nets erected etc etc and without the continuous hard work of these people (you know who you are) the club would not be what it is today – so a special thank you from myself, Foz and the rest of the reserve team squad. Regards Craig Savidge Reserve Team Manager 6

SUNDAY TEAM UPDATE There was frustrating news for us last weekend as our first league game against Alrewas RBL was cancelled meaning we start our campaign tomorrow at Hood Park against FC Team Wild in the League Cup. Since my last programme notes the team gave a reasonable account of itself at the Ski Slope Tournament on 18th August, we were drawn in the same group as Division One Side Gresley Royal Oak and Division Two’s Anglesey Arms so getting through the group was always going to be an uphill struggle given we had seven midfield and striking options missing at the all-day event. The opening game against Anglesey Arms saw a very shaky start with Matt Jones giving away a penalty in the first minute, although it was subsequently saved by stopper Adam Davis, Anglesey took the lead shortly after, and despite sustained Ivanhoe pressure towards the end of the game the scoreline remained that way until the final whistle. The second game saw us waste a number of fantastic early chances against Gresley, who grew stronger as the game went on and eventually won by scoring with the last kick of the game as it ended 1-0. Some pride was restored in the final game though as we beat Greyhound Reserves before being eliminated after finishing 3rd in the group. Richard Commons, James Dunham, and Thomas Heap with the Ashby goals. Stuart Mann Assistant Manager, Ashby Ivanhoe (Sunday)

ASHBY IVANHOE FC SUPPORTERS CLUB Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to this afternoons visitors to the NFU sports ground Desford. Well the new seasons underway and what a good start unbeaten against three good sides a 1 – 1 draw at home against Allexton & New Parks, a 4 – 1 win away at Caterpillar and a narrow 1 – 0 home victory against Melton Mowbray So a promising start for the new management team Tony Hemmings & Carl Payne who with the help of coach Neil Ackers seem to be improving the fitness and organisation of the players and that can only be good news for the rest of the season. Looking forward to today’s game against league leaders Desford unbeaten in four games another tough game should be a good match and a great test for our players. Good luck lads my forecast for this one is 2 – 2 draw. WOW doesn’t the new ground look good your comments please to mh.buckley@btinternet.com See you Saturday. Regards Mick Buckley - Club Chairman

JUNIOR SECTION ROUND-UP ASHBY IVANHOE UNDER 11S KNIGHTS Newly qualified FA Level 1 coach Ian Irving and assistants John Riley and Darren Wearmouth are very much looking forward to our second season with Knights. The boys all enjoyed their first year in the Burton Junior Football League (BJFL) and developed really well as a team as the season progressed. Eight of last year’s team will be playing for us again this year and we also welcome three new faces as we move from 7-a-side to 9-a-side. This year the team will be playing in the BJFL U11’s Division 3, with all games at Shobnall. Our first game is on Saturday 14th September, against Woodville Rangers. Training for the team has continued each Thursday evening throughout the summer, with the focus on technical skills and communication. In preparation for the new season we have also arranged some friendly games against local teams to try different formations and to work on the off-side rule. Our plan for the 2013/2014 season is to develop the boy’s skill levels and performance in an atmosphere of enjoyment. The training sessions will be fun with all of the team highly involved during practice. In our league matches we will positively support and encourage the team to compete and try to win. We all hope for some exciting and close games this coming season and if the progress made last year continues, Ashby Ivanhoe Knights will soon be charging up the league. LATEST MATCH REPORTS LEICESTERSHIRE SENIOR LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SATURDAY 17TH AUGUST 2013 Ashby Ivanhoe & newly promoted Allexton & New Parks had to settle for a point apiece in their opening fixture to the 2013/2014 season. The visitors were the more threatening of the two sides but Ashby took the lead against the run of play through Phil Gibson before Allexton levelled the scores shortly after the break and despite both teams having chances to win the match ended all square with both keepers making some fine saves. It was the visitors who started the match on the front foot and after a couple of early corners they forced home keeper Chris Hodge into his first action of the match by saving well from a shot.
Against the run of play though and with their first attack of the match Ashby scored the opening goal when the ball was worked forward and from the left a low cross along the edge of the area found Phil Gibson who struck a shot back across goal into the bottom corner of the net for 1-0.
The next twenty minutes saw little in the way of chances although the visitors remained the more threatening and they liked to get the ball moving quickly from free kicks and throw-ins and put Ashby under pressure but the defence held firm to cut out any balls into the area but on the half hour mark a good passing move did result in a shot which Hodge again did well to make the save. After surviving the Allexton pressure the final chance of the first half fell to Ashby when a cross into the area found Luke Thorogood but his header towards goal was comfortably saved by the keeper leaving the score at 1-0 at the break. The second half started better for the hosts and they had an early chance through Gibson when he turned on the edge of the area before sending a shot at goal which the keeper saved. On 55 minutes Allexton finally breached the Ivanhoe backline to level the scores when a cross into the area saw the Allexton player beat Hodge to the ball to power home a header and make it 1-1.After the goal the visitors went in search of a second goal and they twice went close on the hour mark when firstly a shot was again well saved by Hodge and with the ball running loose back to the striker it looked likely to be 2-1 but the follow-up shot was wide of the near post. LATEST MATCH REPORTS As the match entered the final twenty minutes both teams had a chance in quick succession with Allexton firstly testing Hodge again who made another fine save and from that Ashby broke forward and substitute Ben Earp was sent through on goal and this time it was the Allexton keeper who produced the save to block the low shot. On 86 minutes Ashby had a chance to snatch victory when another substitute, Jamie Yeomans, sent a thunderbolt towards goal which was destined for the net but the visiting keeper produced a finger tip save to tip the ball over the bar. Then in the final minute Hodge left his best save till last when Allexton attempted a low shot from long range which was heading down the centre of goal but with Hodge diving away from the ball he managed to make the save with his foot and the ball went away from goal and soon after that came the final whistle and the points were shared.
