PRESIDENTS WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Holwell Sports and may I welcome the players, officials and supporters of Holwell Sports and hope that we all enjoy an entertaining match. Well it’s been a busy first week with 3 First team home games in 7 days. Last Saturday was a terrific game vs new boys Teversal with both sides playing some good football & whilst a draw was probably a fair result we did hit both bar & post so on another day we could have snatched it & taken all 3 points. Talking of the bar speaking personally it was great to see most of our players and management staying for a drink after the game, clearly lots of banter was going on & that’s what makes a TEAM unlike some of the scenarios we had last season. Teversal also stayed too to make a great atmosphere in the clubhouse & in the outside area too, hopefully that can continue especially when the Premier League games start at 5.30pm from today. Local clubs like ours rely on income generated over the bar, via the hot drink & food sales as well as the gate receipts & when you think that officials alone can cost circa £150 a game you will appreciate that all income we receive is vital to the progression of the club. It was also great to see many of the Reserve team back at the ground after their game & that “one club” approach is one that I know Marc, Glynn & Craig all subscribe to, so after week one, well done guys. Finally can I encourage everyone to join our growing social media bandwagon. On Facebook we are up to 894 followers & here we post regular updates on the weeks fixtures & news etc. If you haven’t done so please “like” the page & be great to get over 1,000 by the end of the season & share any updates to your own timelines to spread the word on when games are on etc. Even if it puts 5 on the gate each week those people might not have visited before & will hopefully come again, it’s snowball job & if we can get our crowds over 100 that would make a huge difference. On Twitter we now have 1,711 followers & here we post matchday updates & other clubs post their news too, it’s very informative, sometimes it’s drivel but you’ll soon sort the wheat from the chaff, again follow us if you can & be great to get to over 2,000 by the end of the season. That’s all from me, good luck to Glynn, Craig & the lads, enjoy the game. David Morris Club President

FIRST TEAM UPDATE Hello and welcome to the NFU Sports Ground, home of Ashby Ivanhoe FC for our second game of the 2017/18 season against Holwell Sports.

Glyn and I extend a warm welcome to our home support, Holwell players, officials and supporters.

We come into this game extremely frustrated after Tuesday night’s abandoned game on 57 minutes with the score 1-1. We felt that we played some great football in the first half and should have gone in at half time with at least 2 goals but similar to the week before, we didn’t make the most of our chances. This is something that we need to improve on but if we continue to create the chances we will soon see that rectify itself.

We take the positives from Tuesday night’s game into today.

Enjoy the game

Craig Picknell and Glyn Andrews First Team Management

ATT RESULT

ASHBY IVANHOE FC SUPPORTERS CLUB A very warm welcome to everyone here at the NFU Sports Ground for this afternoon’s East Midlands Counties League fixture against Holwell Sports Last week’s 0-0 opener against new boys Teversal proved to be another tight match although we nearly pinched it when a great shot from Tom Nolan which unfortunately slammed against the upright instead of going in and I agree with most people that a draw was a fair result although new manager Craig Picknell thought his team should have won given the chances they had. The team’s new walk out tune had a mixed reaction. Charlie and I thought it wasn't the best we've heard but they chose it so we'll play it. Chairman Stuart Bonser aired his views on the club in last week’s programme so please if you either agree or disagree with him let me know and my e-mail address is below. Also well done to Matt Lester for once again producing the league’s best programme. Today's match sees us in league action against Holwell Sports who over the past few seasons proved to be stubborn opposition and my prediction is a 1-0 win. If you have questions or comments regarding the club please send me an e-mail at mh.buckley@btinternet.com Thanks for your support. Mick Buckley Supporters Club Chairman

IN OPPOSITION TODAY HOLWELL SPORTS Holwell Sports started life as Holwell Ironworks Football Team in 1902. The ground at Asfordby Hill is where most workers employed at the Holwell Iron Works lived and where the working men’s club was set up for social and fitness activities. The unique club emblem of the Stanton Horse with an arrow through its chest originates from the crest of the Crompton’s, a Derbyshire family who’s involvement with the original Stanton Ironworks group dates from 1855, the group lasting for more than 80 years. The crest symbolises the death of horsepower and the emergence of electricity power generation. When the works needed to meet market demand in the 1870’s it was decided to work through the night but the company found it impossible to provide adequate lighting using portable lamps or gas lighting. Crompton had read of the development of the electric arc light and bought some French machinery and lamps, thereby transforming the group’s output after installation in the works. Crompton went on to design a new type of generator and began manufacturing electrical plant on his own as Crompton and Crompton, much later to become Brooke Crompton Parkinson in the 1960’s and part of the Brush and later Hawker Siddeley engineering groups of the eighties. There are, to this day, Brooke Crompton Parkinson motors driving industrial machines. Holwell’s most famous son was Dixie McNeil (born 16 January 1947 in Melton Mowbray) who famously played as a striker. As a schoolboy, McNeil signed for his local club Leicester City FC after playing for Holwell Works. However he did not fit into the First Division side's plans and was released. He eventually made his football league debut for Exeter City FC in the 1966-67 season against Wrexham, a club he would later play for and manage. Dixie was a nickname to savour, associating him with the country’s most famous footballer of his day, Dixie Dean, who set a record when he smashed 60 league goals for Everton in the 1927/28 season. In 1988 the Holwell Works closed and the club’s name was changed to Holwell Sports Football club. In 2007 Holwell approached Corus who own the waste land around the facility and secured a 30 year lease on part of this ground to generate a new training area, at the rear of the main pitch on Welby Road, this is still an ongoing development. In 2008/2009 Holwell gained promotion to FA level 6 on the national football league pyramid, one of the first clubs in the EMCL league where we compete against teams from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as well as teams from Leicestershire. In this first season Holwell finished a respectable seventh. Our reserves continue to play in the Leicestershire Combination League, and we have a newly formed development squad playing in the North Leicestershire League. Holwell had their best ever run in the FA Cup last season getting as far as the 3rd qualifying round taking Bedworth United to a replay and extra time. Last season we were runners up in the Leicestershire Senior Cup, the first time we have reached the final in 17 years.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY

F

Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la O 4 UN 19 Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the DED 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch.

The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for this season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Four. The club also has a large number of junior sides ranging from Under 7’s through to Under 18’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009/2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/2011 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and would play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY 2015/2016 saw Ashby have another fine season and they mounted a strong title challenge and they led the East Midlands Counties League for the majority of the season before finally finishing in third place. That saw them assured of a first ever appearance in the FA Cup for the 2016/2017 season. Last season was the most memorable in the history of Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club. For the very first time in the clubs history they were accepted to play in the most famous club competition in the world, The FA Cup. It turned into a thrilling journey with higher ranked opponents of Quorn and Loughborough Dynamo knocked out before Ashby fell to Ilkeston in the 1st Qualifying Round. Prior to the Ilkeston defeat Ashby received a visit from the FA Cup which was paraded through the town centre visiting local sponsors before players and spectators had the opportunity to view the cup at the NFU Sports Ground. The league season was inconsistent with a strong finish to the season seeing the team finish in tenth place. The season did end with a first appearance in the final of the Jenkins & Jenkins League Cup but Dunkirk overturned a one goal deficit late on to see Ashby end as runners-up. The new season sees a new management team at the helm of the club with Glyn Andrews and Craig Picknell joining the club from Friar Lane & Epworth with the aim of achieving promotion to Step 5.
