CHAIRMANS WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to the NFU Sports Ground for todays FA VASE against FRIAR LANE & EPWORTH FC and may I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and spectators of FRIAR LANE & EPWORTH FC and hope you all enjoy the game.

Lets hope these notes meet you with 2 further wins over Graham Street Primms and Ingles as I have written these notes ahead of the game against Graham Street Primms as our print and design team are away on holiday.

Our Junior teams all kick off their season next weekend and will be competing in the Burton Junior League, Tamworth Junior League and the Derby City League. The club continues to expand its Junior teams and we have some dedicated and committed Coaches to help develop the players in their respective teams and I would like to thank all the Coaches for their time and efforts over the Summer and wish you all a very enjoyable Season. Additionally, thank you to all the parents for choosing Ashby Ivanhoe FC for your children and finally, to all the players in our Junior Teams, ENJOY your football, play with a smile and remember above all, work hard and have fun playing.

As part of our joined up approach as a club the team will be walking out with one of our Junior Teams today and whilst it is not the Premier League it will still be a great experience for the young players to walk out with Senior Players onto the pitch that they may one day be playing on themselves and we welcome the players and parents to the game today.

The Sunday Team kick off their games tomorrow also and I am sure that Roger and his players will be looking to equal their great season last year which saw them bring home a league and cup double. If you fancy a stroll out on a Sunday morning then you will see the team playing at the NFU Sports ground each Sunday throughout Autumn but may switch to Hood Park as the season moves forward so keep your eye out on social media and the website for updates of where their HOME games will be played.

Lets hope todays game ends well for Ashby Ivanhoe FC and thank you all for your support today it means a lot to the club, players and coaches to see you all here. Enjoy the game

FIRST TEAM UPDATE Hello and welcome to the NFU, home of Ashby Ivanhoe FC. It’s the start of a busy bank holiday weekend of football for us and what will be a further 2 tough games. Both Graham St Primms and Ingles (our opponents for today and Monday respectively) have made good starts to the season and we will need to continue our good form and excellent football to get 2 positive results. If we can come out of this bank holiday weekend unscathed (which we are capable of doing) it will show our intention for this season and put us right up there. Last week saw us beat a well drilled Rainworth side 2-0. Our first half performance was arguably one of the best I have overseen whilst at the club and the second goal was rightly applauded both within the ground and on social media. It really was a goal that oozed quality. For those that didn’t see the goal it was a great team goal which followed on from an exchange of 5-6 high tempo, one touch passing. As with all bank holiday weekends we have many players away. Luckily we have some strength in depth this year so is a good opportunity for others to come in and claim the shirt. There is real competition for places this season and motivation is high. It is also fair to say that the players are looking forward to our upcoming FA Vase game at home against Friar Lane on the 1st September and they are determined to come into that game in good form as a team. Individually they all want to be in the starting 11 for that game. They are under no illusions that 2 wins over this weekend will go a long way in helping them do that! As with all our games, it is our intention to go out with attacking intent and am hoping we can build on the our 2 back-to-back wins get 3 more points and continue to improve. Enjoy the game, keep the faith and please be vocal in your support. Craig Picknell 1st Team Manager FIRST TEAM UPDATE SPONSORED BY

IN OPPOSITION TODAY Friar Lane and Epworth Fc came from an amalgamation of Friar Lane Old Boys and Epworth Fc in time for the 2004/05 season. The original proposition was for Epworth FC who had just won the Leicestershire Senior League Div 1 to groundshare with FLOB, which was initially backed by the committee of the LSL, but a stormy AGM involving the member clubs threw out the proposal and it was back to the drawing board. Amalgamation was the only realistic choice so in time for the season 2004-05 the 2 sides joined forces. The first team finished 8th in the Premier Division but got there hands on some silverware when winning the Jelson Homes Senior Cup, beating local rivals Kirby Muxloe 3-2 aet. Meanwhile the reserves strolled to the Leicestershire Combination title losing just one game and also picking up the Saturday Shield when beating Desford FC by 2-1 aet. The following season saw the first team take the Premier Division title and also reach the Jelson Homes Cup Final again although this time losing 1-0 to Thurnby Rangers whilst the Reserves finished a creditable 6th. Initially turning down the opportunity to be promoted to the Midland Football Alliance, the league advised that runners up Barrow Town would be promoted in our place. Discussions followed and after weeks of hard work, the Lane took their place in the MFA for season 2006-07. This again meant the Reserves had to move leagues and so they joined the Midland Combination Reserves League. Under manager Clem Dublin, the first team managed a creditable 15th place and 43 points, whilst the Reserves finished 2nd 2 points behind winners Hinckley Utd Res who won their last game 2 days after the Lane reserves had completed their season, Adie Taylor had the satisfaction of winning the Leagues Golden Boot. 2007-08 again saw the first team in a comfortable position finishing 14th on 56 points (5 more points would have made 7th) and also reaching the final of the Westerby Cup, losing 3-0 to local rivals Oadby Town in front of nearly 700 at the Walkers Stadium. Whilst the Reserves slipped to 6th with Neil Pullen picking up the leagues prestigious player of the season.08/09 again saw the Lane finish 14th with 50 points whilst the Reserves had rejoined the Leicestershire Senior League Div 1 finishing 4th but taking Stu Deeleys all conquering Anstey Nomads side to the wire losing 3-2 in the Beacon Bitter Cup Final. During 2009/10, manager Alan Brett resigned in Dec and Steve Orme took over and again the side were well clear of relegation in 15th place with 47 points. 2010/11 started well and by the end of November the side was safe in 13th place before the bad weather arrived. However on resumption in early Jan the team went 15 games without a win and slipped down the table until winning 6-2 at Alvechurch, eventually finishing 18th. However Manager Steve Orme tendered his resignation a month before the end of the season and the Lane boat was rocking. With a lack of finance and the general unsuitably of anybody locally to carry on, the club looked outside of Leicestershire with a view to bringing in players that were unknowns. Darren Barber and Anthony Barrett were appointed and at the first training session things looked good. However with no budget and a lot of travelling just for a home game it soon became clear that this was not the way forward and numbers dwindled. The quality of player required at MFA level was not within the club and an emergency meeting took place and the resignation was tendered with more than a hint of sadness. The easy thing would have been to fold, but at a separate meeting 3 days later the 7 players that turned up wanted to give it a go, so the Reserves then became the first team. Epworth and latterly Friar Lane and Epworth are extremely proud of their achievements during the past 13 seasons rising from Leicester District League Div 1 (level 10) to the MFA (level5) and maintaining that status for 5 years. Season 2011/12 was now about a period of stabilization before hopefully climbing the ladder to the East Midlands Counties within 5/6 years.

IN OPPOSITION TODAY The first year back in the Senior League Div 1 (2011/12) saw the Lane finish 3rd after a poor start to the season due to a lack of players. However the team under Gaz Palfrey and Ian Gotch rallied well, finishing 6 points off a promotion place and reaching the semi final of the County Cup. 2012/13 saw the team finish as runners up with just 1 defeat whilst also reaching the Sat Intermediate Cup Final where they lost 3-1 to Houghton Rangers. Back in the premier division, manager Gaz Palfrey increased his back room staff, bringing in Wayne Batson and Ray Cook from Aylestone Park and the club also put a second team out under another ex Aylestone man, Paul Speight alongside Simon Charlton & Dean Sadler. This season saw the Lane finally finish sixth, whilst the reserves comfortably won their league by remaining unbeaten for the 18 games and also reaching the final of the presidents cup which they lost 2-0 to Sileby Town Res. At the end of the season, Palfrey decided to stand down and the committee decided that former player Nick Brett who was managing in the East Midlands Counties at Anstey Nomads. Was the man, and he brought with him Alan Ward who had been in the backroom staff at the Lane during their MFA days. Integrating new and old players is never easy, but the Lane are looking to continue to build on the last 3 seasons and have already been awarded the ground grading should promotion be on offer. The Lane finished the season in 6th place missing out on promotion by 1 point but as some sort of Compensation picked up the Beacon Bitter Trophy with a 3-0 win over Earl Shilton Albion. Meanwhile the reserves finished 4th in the combination prem. 2015/16 turned into a disaster for the Lane in their quest for promotion. Manager Brett changed his back room staff and many players but a mixture of draws and single goal defeats effectively saw the team out of any promotion chance by the end of November and a number of players came and went as the side finished a distant 11th behind champions Birstall Utd. However it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the club as Paul Speight’s reserve side romped away with the City Goldsmith Res division and also won the presidents cup and also had the leagues leading goalscorer Dave Fisher. Back to the drawing board, the committee approached Coalville Town re their manager Craig Picknell whose Coalville Dev squad had just missed out on promotion and Picknell brought in Glyn Andrews to assist plus a whole host of new faces. Paul Speight continued with the reserves who won their first game away at Loughborough 15-0 and then had 2 weeks without a game during which time most of the lads decided it wasn’t for them and joined other clubs! Meanwhile after a shaky start messrs Picknell and Andrews got to work and after a shaky start the side settled down and with leading scorer Josh Johnson becoming a thorn in a lot of defences, the side finished a creditable 3rd after a final game 4-2 win at Blaby. With runaway champions Lutterworth Town not having the grading (won on appeal) and Saffron Dynamo not applying, the Lane were offered a place in the UCL Div 1 pending Lutterworths and Olney Town appeals. As the club waited for the results assistant Glyn Andrews had said that the travelling was too much for him and days later Craig Picknell followed and subsequently took over at Ashby Ivanhoe. Meanwhile Paul Speight who had been mulling over an offer from Anstey Nomads in search of higher grade football also resigned and the club was in turmoil. Deciding not to take up the UCL offer, the Lane went back to step 1 and after initially taking on Dean Landers as manager also appointed Mick Brookes has his assistant. However after a number of friendlies the pair felt that the partnership wasn’t working and Landers took over the vacant Ellistown job with just 2 weeks to the season start taking 50% of the players! Unperturbed Brookes got to work and after a couple of early defeats got some pride back in the club and finished a creditable mid table. This season Brookes has bought in Jacob Straw and Sean Rooney has his assistants as the Lane look to get back in the top 5 and have also added a reserve side to the new division 2.

THE OPPOSITION STAPENHILL They were formed in 1947 and ten years after formation they joined the Leicestershire Senior League Division Two and found immediate success, gaining promotion in their debut season and winning the Division One championship in the following two seasons. They remained in that division, apart from a single season (1971/1972) in Division Two, winning the top flight, now renamed the Premier Division, twice more – 1986/1987 and 1988/1989. They then joined the Midland Combination Premier Division, staying there for five seasons until they became a founding member of the Midland Alliance where they remained until resigning from the league in January 2002. Later that year they joined the Leicestershire Senior League and were promoted as runners-up into the Premier Division. In the 2007/2008 season, they were members of the Midland Football Alliance, but after a fire ravaged their home stadium the club was forced to close down. The club reformed in 2009 and rejoined the Leicestershire Senior League and gained promotion to the EMCL in the 2012/2013 season. ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY

19 4 8 - 2 01 8

70 YE AR S

The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for this season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Four. The club also has a large number of junior sides ranging from Under 7’s through to Under 18’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009/2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/2011 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and would play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY 2015/2016 saw Ashby have another fine season and they mounted a strong title challenge and they led the East Midlands Counties League for the majority of the season before finally finishing in third place. That saw them assured of a first ever appearance in the FA Cup for the 2016/2017 season. Last season was the most memorable in the history of Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club. For the very first time in the clubs history they were accepted to play in the most famous club competition in the world, The FA Cup. It turned into a thrilling journey with higher ranked opponents of Quorn and Loughborough Dynamo knocked out before Ashby fell to Ilkeston in the 1st Qualifying Round. Prior to the Ilkeston defeat Ashby received a visit from the FA Cup which was paraded through the town centre visiting local sponsors before players and spectators had the opportunity to view the cup at the NFU Sports Ground. The league season was inconsistent with a strong finish to the season seeing the team finish in tenth place. The season did end with a first appearance in the final of the Jenkins & Jenkins League Cup but Dunkirk overturned a one goal deficit late on to see Ashby end as runners-up. The new season sees a new management team at the helm of the club with Glyn Andrews and Craig Picknell joining the club from Friar Lane & Epworth with the aim of achieving promotion to Step 5.
