CHAIRMANS WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to today’s Buildbase FA Vase game against our visitors St Martins and may I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and spectators of St Martins who have made the long trip from Oswestry and hope you enjoy your stay and our hospitality. The fixtures for the club have been coming in thick and fast over the last few weeks and with over 60 scheduled games on the pitch this year we have our work cut out to keep in the best condition possible and my thanks as always goes to Ian Irving who works tirelessly on the ground to keep it well maintained. The objective set out at the beginning of the Season with Glyn and Craig was to match or go one step further in all areas of last season and today’s game gives them a fantastic opportunity to progress in this competition and remember the 8th game of this competition is at Wembley so who really knows in football. The Club continues to receive great support from the business community and thank you to all our existing and new sponsors for your continued support. Tomorrow also sees the first Company Cup which is organised by our main sponsors, Fishers-Dewes. The purpose of the 5 a side cup is to bring businesses together and play for the Company Cup but more importantly to support a very good charity which is Cardiac Risk in Children. Therefore, if you are at a loose end tomorrow then pop down between 10am – 2pm and show your support. The day is also for families so a bouncy castle and BBQ and licensed bar will be available. The reserve team progressed through last Tuesday in the Beacon Bitter cup and well deserved the victory and well done to Marc and the boys as they are showing early signs of becoming a good team and this is what we have all been working for over the last few months to bring our teams all together and feed each other from 18’s to the first team. Talking of the Under 18’s, this year we see ourselves fielding 2 midweek floodlit teams and whilst a frantic last week of sorting them out took place it was a real pleasure to watch the Knights beat Allexton New Parks in their opening game at home and the Youth team beat Gresley away. That victory at Gresley saw Steve Gee and his son Sam Gee return to the Moat ground following their bizarre release from Gresley having been associated as a family for decade. However, their loss is now our gain and I would like to officially welcome Steve and his family to Ashby Ivanhoe FC as Steve takes charge of the Midweek Youth Team. The Midweek Youth Knights team is managed by another experienced Manager in Paul Hart and his assistant Craig Irvine so I welcome them officially too. The club’s junior teams all kick off their campaign this weekend and we wish the Coaches and players the very best of luck, fun and enjoyment throughout the season. This year will have seen us top over 200 kids registered and playing for the club and the demand keeps on growing which is testament to the demanding work that Andy Topham has put in to help us get the word out there and build a structure of coaches that he looks after and does a fantastic job.
All that remains is to wish the players good luck for the game and to thank you for your continued support it really is appreciated.

YOUTH TEAM UPDATE The midweek youth team started their season off with a bang with a 7-3 victory away at Gresley. Gresley started the better of the 2 teams with Ashby struggling to settle on the ball, although Gresley failed to make their early pressure count. Ashby took the lead on 19 mins with a goal of the season contender when Harry Stewart curled a shot into the top corner from the right hand side of the 18-yard box. Ashby made it 2 on 23 mins when Reece Hughes got on the end of a cross come shot from Alex White to leave the keeper with no chance. Gresley struggled to test our keeper with Ashby defending resolutely, although they did have one shot of note, which Zac Warriner got down well to save. Gresley finished the half the better of the 2 teams (pre-season probably helped) and got themselves back into the game with a goal on the stroke of half time. Ashby came out of the blocks in the second half and capitalised on some poor Gresley defending which came about from some great Ashby pressure. Reece Hughes (who was clinical on the night) fired home with great composure on 45 mins, 47 mins and then 55 mins to give Ashby a 5–1 lead. Ashby made it 6 after 70mins when a deep free kick from the impressive Jack Abel was met at the back post by Alex Ford who nodded past the keeper. Gresley appeared to respond to this and started to apply further pressure and had looked to setup a tense finish when then replied with 2 goals of their own on 78 mins and 83 mins. Ashby continued to defend resolutely and completed the rout on 90 mins when Ollie Boyd finished after great work down the left resulted in a bye line cross from Harry Stewart. This was a great team effort with all players contributing to this victory, a great start to the season to build upon.

UNDER 18S KNIGHTS UPDATE Ashby Knights started their season off with a 4-3 win against Allexton & Newparks Eagles. Both teams were fielding sides for the first time. Ashby started very brightly and raced to a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes. Sam Wheelers explosive pace being a deciding factor as he latched on to through balls setting himself up for one and Olly Fall grabbing a brace. At the end of the first half Ashby started to look jaded after their explosive start as Allexton started to come in to the game. A silly foul provided a free kick in a good position and they grabbed a late goal. At half time Ashby needed fresh legs and 3 substitutes were made and the team was told how important the next goal would be. As soon as the whistle went for the second half, good work between Will and Danny made a great opening for Sam who squeezed the ball home from a tight angle 4-1. Ben Windridge and Tom Fargher (both 15) came on for their first game at U18 and should be well pleased with their performances playing 35 minutes and working really hard. To their credit Allexton never gave in and scored 2 late goals but Ashby held on for a deserved win. MOM Sam Wheeler great effort and goals to go with it keep up the good work Sam.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC SUPPORTERS CLUB A very warm welcome to everyone here at the NFU Sports Ground for this afternoon’s Buildbase FA Vase game against St Martins Recent league matches have been a bit up and down, a great bank holiday win at Stapenhill (a 4-3 cracker) was followed by a disappointing 3-1 loss at Arnold Town which leaves us wallowing in the bottom half of the table having won just 2 of our first 6 league games, drawing 1 and losing 3. Obviously room for improvement which I'm sure will start today in the FA Vase against West Midlands side St Martins who play in Division 1 of the West Midlands Regional League where they are currently in 13th position (out of 17). This match is a difficult one to call but my prediction is a 3-1 win for our boys. A good result for the reserves last week with a 4-1 home win against Cottesmore and this was followed up in midweek with a 5-2 League Cup victory over Barlestone St Giles. Well done lads. If you have questions or comments regarding the club please send me an e-mail at mh.buckley@btinternet.com Thanks for your support. Mick Buckley Supporters Club Chairman

THE PRESIDENT’S VIEW Welcome to The FA Vase Day & a welcome to our opponents who have travelled a very long way to face us today. St Martin’s are making their first appearance in this competition & may I offer my congratulations & hope they have an enjoyable day (but don’t win of course) Our first venture into The FA Vase was back in 2009 & I can remember very well the circumstances of our application progress when we played at Hood Park & let’s just say I think we blagged it very well. We applied to enter the competition & the man from The FA duly turned up on a wet Wednesday afternoon to survey our er facilities. Those who remember Hood Park will also remember that during the week it was very much a public park, albeit with our barrier & floodlights erected (at huge cost, don’t get me started). I think the FA man was used to rather more palatial surroundings at let’s just say he had a few “concerns” about our lack of obvious amenities & couldn’t see how Hood Park would meet the strict FA entry criteria. Nevertheless, & undeterred, Charlie Tissington Jnr wearing his AIFC hat NOT his FA hat managed to set his concerns to rest as follows:FA Man – Where is the covered standing for 40 people? CWT – That sheltered area there outside the changing rooms……er obviously FA Man – Where is the “onsite bar”? CWT – Upstairs in Hood Park Leisure Centre FA Man – Where is the hard standing around the pitch? CWT – Over there, that path running the length of Hood Park…….er obviously FA Man – How can you secure the ground & charge a gate? CWT – With some poles & some security tape (he’s not gonna buy this is he) FA Man – Where is your “on site” catering? CWT – Nigel “Sqwarker” Parker is bringing his BBQ (we’re screwed) Amazingly 2 days later we got an e mail confirming our acceptance, where there’s a will there’s a way. Club archivist Charlie Tissington has found some photos of the day & the team line up too, thanks Charlie, happy days and also programme editor Matthew Lester has included the match report from the game. These can be found on pages 23-25. Enjoy the game, & hope for a win so we can have another FA Vase “jolly boys outing” David Morris Club President

WHEN YOU SEE RED, ARE YOU SURE IT’S NOT GREEN, OR BLACK? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours and how that would affect you, your teammate or your child. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at www.TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.

THE PRESIDENT’S VIEW MATCH REPORT FROM THE FA VASE 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND TIE VS COVENTRY SPHINX ASHBY IVANHOE 0-2 COVENTRY SPHINX, SATURDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER 2009 Ashby Ivanhoe entertained Coventry Sphinx at Hood Park in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase and despite putting in a good performance they fell to a narrow 2-0 defeat. This was an historic day for Ashby as this was the first time they had entered the competition and today’s opponents from the Midland Alliance had reached the quarter final stage two seasons ago before falling to the eventual winners Kirkham & Wesham. Coventry Sphinx started the match the better side looking for the early goal and after just four minutes the first chance at goal came but the shot across goal was wide of the far post but they were soon on the attack again and with the next chance they took the lead. The goal came when Coventry received the ball in midfield and started on a run towards goal and after avoiding several attempted tackles by Ashby the ball was fired past John Noon from the edge of the area to give the visitors a 1-0 lead with only five minutes on the clock. Ashby were then looking for a quick reply and on eight minutes they had their first chance of the match when Coventry failed to clear a corner but the shot from Chris Nettel was over the bar. After the opening ten minutes had seen Coventry look to take command off the match, Ashby kept on battling away and were becoming more confident going forward and at times the visitors were rattled as the strikers were kept out the match and with just ten minutes of the half remaining Rich Hanslow had Ashby’s best chance but his shot was well saved by the keeper who turned the ball round the post.

THE PRESIDENT’S VIEW It was Coventry who had the final chance of the first half after a long ball forward found the striker but after advancing towards goal his shot was saved by Noon and at half time Coventry held a slender one goal lead. The second half began much like the first as Coventry were searching for a second goal to put distance between the teams but the Ashby defence remained strong and kept the strikers away from goal and Ashby became more confident again and started to create openings but they just couldn’t find that illusive equaliser. Things did get easier for Ashby on 56 minutes when a second bookable offence saw Coventry reduced to ten men and from the resulting free kick taken by Sam Bartram the ball was played into the centre of the area and Phil Gibson connected with the ball and sent a header into the back of the net but he was denied by the assistant’s offside flag. Ashby were well on top now as they looked to capitalise on the one man advantage and on the hour mark Jamie Brown had a shot from the edge of the area which left the keeper scrambling across his goal line but the shot rebounded out of play off the post. With Ashby pushing forward it left the defence exposed which resulted in chances for Coventry and they had numerous chances midway through the half. Firstly on 63 minutes an opportunity was created from a short corner but the shot was wide of the far post. Then three minutes later they broke forward down the right hand side before the striker cut inside and advanced towards goal but when the shot came Noon tipped it round the post and just a minute later a shot rebounded off the post.
24
vs St Martins | Saturday 9th September 2017 | www.ashbyivanhoefc.com
THE PRESIDENT’S VIEW Ashby were still searching hard for the equaliser and they had the next chance on 72 minutes when they were awarded a free kick just outside the area and Joe Brockley’s direct curling shot was just over the bar with the keeper beaten. With eleven minutes remaining Coventry had another chance to extend their lead but after the striker burst clear from the defence Noon produced another fine save to keep Ashby in the match but two minutes later and the match was put beyond Ashby’s reach as a shot from a narrow angle beat Noon at the near post for 2-0. The second goal didn’t stop Ashby and they continued to attack in search of a goal and they created some good chances in the final minutes of the match. With just a minute left a cross by Chris King was headed towards goal by Gibson but the ball was deflected wide. Then deep into stoppage time a cross from the right found Chris Nettel just yards from goal but the shot was saved by the keeper then Nettel had one of the best chances of the match when he shot across goal but the keeper tipped the ball wide and the match ended with a 2-0 victory for Coventry. Ashby had competed and at times outplayed their opponents who play at a standard two divisions higher and on another day it could have been Ashby who were advancing to the next round.

IN OPPOSITION TODAY ST MARTINS The name of St. Martins Football Club has been respected throughout Shropshire and the borders of Wales for many years but more recently throughout the West Midland as the club enjoys their position playing at the highest level of the club’s long illustrious history. Before the 1914-18 war specific details about the club are vague but as early as 1897 the village had a team competing in the Oswestry & District League and local competitions. After the 1914-18 war the club was reformed under the chairmanship of the late Mr. James Lowe, secretary Mr Ern Evison and treasurer Mr. Joe Lindup and won the Oswestry & District League in 1919-20. In 1930-31 one of the best teams ever to represent the village captained by Tom Vaughan won the Village Cup beating Traflach in the final which was graced by the skills of Don Hopley, who later played for Shrewsbury Town and Wellington. In the early 30’s the name of the club was changed to St Martins United, and then in 1935-36 to the Greyhound Rangers, with matches being played on the field adjacent to the Greyhound Inn. In 1936-37 the club made a successful impact across the border in Wales winning the Cefn & District League Cup but interest declined after this brief spell playing in Wales and there was no organised football in the village from 1937 to 1939. Between the years of 1939-45, that included the bleak years of the last World War, the villagers were treated to some top-class football for under the auspices of the local Home-Guard, the club entered a team in a local league comprising of various forces units stationed in the area. These services teams had several Football League players in their ranks so a very high standard of soccer was enjoyed. At the end of the war the club was reformed and entered the North Shropshire League, later to be known as the Oswestry & District League when Mr Eddie Lindup was secretary of the unbeaten League Champions in 1945-46. St Martins won the Oswestry League again in 1953 and 1955 and in the years to 1966 won the Village Cup 10 times enjoying an unbeaten run in the competition of 25 consecutive matches during this period. In 1955-56 the club enjoyed a fair share of success in the very competitive Whitchurch League, winning the championship on two occasions, gaining second place twice and third position six times. They also won the Whitchurch League Cup, the Consolation Cup and reached the final of the Ethelstone Cup Final four times in five seasons winning at the fourth attempt in 1962 and once more in 1969. The Championship wins were gained in consecutive seasons and they only lost two games during those successful campaigns. The Whitchurch League folded in 1972 so the Saints as they are popularly known locally decided to enter the West Shropshire League in 1973-74 and in their first season won the 3rd Division without losing League match and trashed Hanwood FC, then a Premier League side in the League Cup Final by 5-1. Their prolific marksman, Michael Smout scored a phenomenal 45 goals that season. From that 3rd Division Championship the club won successive promotions entering the Premiership in 1976.

27
IN OPPOSITION TODAY The club then joined the Shropshire County League winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94 and promotion into the West Midland League Division 2 in 2010-11. In its first season in this West Midland League St. Martins won the 2nd Division and promotion into the West Midland League Division One in 2011-12. They have subsequently finished in the top half of the WML 1st Division One every year, coming close to promotion to the Premier League on several occasions. Various local competitions have been and gone over the years but what has remained is the name of St. Martin’s FC that has graced each one of these competitions as winners and runners up. In 1971 the Tyre Cup tournament was started and the Saints figured proximately in the early years, winning the cup in 1971, 72-73, 74-75 and losing in the final to Weston Rhyn in 73-74 and 78-79 and to Morda in 79-80 after a replay. The Saints lifted the Sid Roberts Memorial Cup in 1988 beating Gobowen Celtic 3-1. The club has been a stalwart of the Graham Edwards Memorial Completion making their contribution towards the thousands of pounds raised by the competition over the years since its inception in 1975. The club won this coveted Competition in 2015 beating Oswestry Oak 2-1 in an exciting final with Shaun Millusi scoring the winning goal in the last minute of the game. Over the years the club has been blessed with some dedicated servants. Cecil Rogers was secretary and the treasurer was Douglas Leach who both worked tirelessly for the club. Stan Faulks was president or vice president for 30 years. His generous contributions to the club were typified when he purchased the land behind his supermarket and placed a covenant stating that the land can only be used for recreation purposes that will always include football. Sadly Stan passed away in 1988 but his legacy will always live on in St. Martins and within the broader football fraternity in Shropshire. Stan’s Grandson Andrew has enjoyed periods as President and has been the most consistent Sponsor for the club. The ultimate saltwort and longest serving member of the club is Derek Stokes, who played for the Saints at the tender age of 14, won over a 100 trophies maintaining a healthy appetite for football playing his final game for the Saints as a 60 year. Derek’s dedication to the club included every possible role, from player, manager, treasurer, secretary to marking the pitch out and washing the kit. Derek played a significant role in negotiating the transfer of accommodation for the club to the Venue that enabled the club to function within the expectations of the West Midland League. Sadly Derek passed away on Sunday 22nd January 2017 but has set a firm foundation for the Club and he will be sadly missed by the football fraternity of the West Midlands, and his beloved St. Martins. At the beginning of last season St. Martins FC struggled in the West Midland League as the loss of the Club Manager and several key players to Oswestry Town disrupted the team but new Manager Dan Stevens transformed the clubs fortunes in the latter half of the season leading the team to a commendable mid-table finish in the league. Supported by an active and vibrant management committee Dan is looking forward to the new season in which he intends to gain promotion for the club into the Premier League of the West Midland League for the first time in their long and fascinating history.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY

Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la O 4 UN 19 Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the DED 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch.
The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for this season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Four. The club also has a large number of junior sides ranging from Under 7’s through to Under 18’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009/2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/2011 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and would play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY 2015/2016 saw Ashby have another fine season and they mounted a strong title challenge and they led the East Midlands Counties League for the majority of the season before finally finishing in third place. That saw them assured of a first ever appearance in the FA Cup for the 2016/2017 season. Last season was the most memorable in the history of Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club. For the very first time in the clubs history they were accepted to play in the most famous club competition in the world, The FA Cup. It turned into a thrilling journey with higher ranked opponents of Quorn and Loughborough Dynamo knocked out before Ashby fell to Ilkeston in the 1st Qualifying Round. Prior to the Ilkeston defeat Ashby received a visit from the FA Cup which was paraded through the town centre visiting local sponsors before players and spectators had the opportunity to view the cup at the NFU Sports Ground. The league season was inconsistent with a strong finish to the season seeing the team finish in tenth place. The season did end with a first appearance in the final of the Jenkins & Jenkins League Cup but Dunkirk overturned a one goal deficit late on to see Ashby end as runners-up. The new season sees a new management team at the helm of the club with Glyn Andrews and Craig Picknell joining the club from Friar Lane & Epworth with the aim of achieving promotion to Step 5.
