I won’t be at the game today due to a family holiday but may I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of the people who came to support the team on the opening day of the season last Saturday, it made for a fantastic spectacle and I know the players really appreciated your support too as there is no better atmosphere than the one created at your ‘Home’ ground. At the start of the season I set a few targets for the club and one included reaching a crowd of 100 during the season, little did I know that it would be on day one as we actually had 121 spectators through the gate - a record attendance for the club. I am sure the fact we are playing Bardon today will add that element of competitiveness to the game as we welcome old Ivanhoe players, Rich Hanslow and Manager, Steve Titterton, and I hope for all of you watching it is a great game. The reserves kick off their season today at Anstey Nomads Reserves and I wish Craig, Paul, Paz and the players the very best of luck. Off the field we continue to move forward with more and more sponsors which is great to see and with our existing sponsors all renewing their support it is testament to where we’re going as a club and that people want to be involved with us. Over the coming months we will be launching our sponsors recognition programme and I will make further announcements in the coming weeks. Last week’s game was a close affair but a strong second half performance from the team gave them a well earned victory and let’s hope they can continue to develop as a team with another victory today. Good luck boys. Stuart Bonser Club Chairman

FIRST TEAM UPDATE Welcome to today’s home fixture against Bardon Hill FC. Once again, I know little about Bardon Hill FC, although this game is a local ‘derby’. I know a couple of their players, notably Carl Slater and Richard Hanslow, who I coached when I was the assistant manager at Gresley Rovers FC. Carl Slater is an accomplished midfielder, very good passer of the ball and Richard Hanslow is possibly the best finisher / striker at this level. Therefore, we are in for a very difficult afternoon as the one we experienced in our very first league game against Radford FC. I expected a scrappy first league game, as it was the club’s very first at this level. Moreover, I also think a number of the players were nervous due to the occasion, which may have been a significant factor to how we performed in the first half. I felt that we were pulled and stretched around the park and we never looked like we would have any good periods of possession. Furthermore, we were forced into making a couple of changes at half time, which altered the outlook of the second half, as we had to take more risks to get on level terms, as we were losing by one goal at half time. However, great credit to the players, as they showed high levels of commitment and resilience to get onto level terms and then go on to win the game. Equally, the work that Yogi, our first team coach, has been doing with our players has greatly benefited them and his efforts are really paying off. I very much hope that you all enjoy today’s match. Anthony Hemmings First Team Manager Getting our campaign off to a good start was important and to come away with a positive result and 3 points last Saturday was most pleasing. It was a game of 2 halves though and our first 45mins performance found us coming in at half time with a lot to do. The lads responded and showed great character to press harder, play more football in the middle of the park and create with purpose in the final third. We now need to build on that second half performance and take hold of today’s game early on, dictating the pace and the play. Yogi Diery First Team Coach

MATCH ACTION VS RADFORD ASHBY IVANHOE 2

Carlisle OG 60, Thorogood 90+1

RADFORD 1

Carlisle 38 East Midlands Counties Football League Saturday 9th August 2014 Luke Thorogood struck a 91st minute winner as Ashby Ivanhoe began their first season in the East Midlands Counties Football League with a 2-1 victory over Nottinghamshire side Radford. The visitors scored the only goal of the first half through Jake Carlisle before his own goal brought Ashby level on the hour mark. Thorogood then smashed home a loose ball from inside the area as the match entered stoppage time to give Ashby a winning start. Ashby almost had the best possible opening when with just three minutes on the clock a corner was swung into the area and with the keeper beaten the ball struck the woodwork before the visitors cleared and their first chance of the match came on five minutes later when a long throw into the area resulted in a headed effort at goal which went narrowly over the top. On 26 minutes Ashby went close to scoring the first goal when Chris Saunders got his head to the ball and with the keeper beaten the ball was heading goalwards before it was cleared off the line with Thorogood ready to force it home and chances were coming at both ends as on the half hour mark Ashby’s keeper Chris Hodge was called into action when a ball into the area was headed goalwards and he had to be at full stretch to tip the ball over the bar. Radford ended the first half strongly as they forced Ashby back into their own half and with seven minutes remaining of the first 45 they opened the scoring when a corner into the area was powerfully headed home by Jake Carlisle into the corner of the net. Despite continuing to be the better side for the final few minutes of the half it remained 1-0 at the break with half time coming at the right time for Ashby.

AIFC vs Bardon Hill | Saturday 16th August 2014 | www.ashbyivanhoefc.com

MATCH ACTION VS RADFORD The start of the second half saw Ashby make a few tactical changes with Phil Gibson and Jack Ryder coming off the bench to replace Elliott Bott and Tom Nolan and a change of formation was also made and it brought more attacking intent from the home side and on 50 minutes they had a great chance to level when a long range shot stung the palms of the Radford keeper and with the ball running loose Saunders went to hit a first time shot but slipped before striking the ball. Then just two minutes later a cross into the area found Gibson sliding in at the back post but his shot was over the bar without troubling the keeper. On the hour mark Ashby were level when a ball into the area found Daniel Sharp who headed the ball on towards Thorogood and under pressure from the Ashby midfielder the Radford goalscorer, Carlisle, saw the ball come off him and find the net to make it 1-1. Both sides had chances as the match entered the final twenty minutes with firstly the visitors striking a powerful long range effort which had Hodge diving to his left but the shot was wide of the post and then just a minute later it was Ashby’s turn to go close when from a corner a shot through a crowded penalty area was wide. Ashby made their final change as Angus Blair-Park replaced Saunders and it was the substitute who had a hand in Ashby’s winner when a ball into the area wasn’t dealt with well by the Radford defence and with the keeper coming to claim the ball he was under pressure from Blair-Park and his poor clearance fell nicely for Thorogood inside the area to smash home the second and decisive goal. Ashby did have to survive one final scare though as in the second minute of stoppage time Radford forced a corner which was played towards the back post and a header back across goal beat the keeper before striking the crossbar. Ashby then held on for a final couple of minutes to record an opening day victory.

UNDER 18S UPDATE Firstly may I extend a warm welcome to the supporters, officials and players of Bardon Hill FC for today’s fixture. Fixtures have now been released for the Youth Team and a full list can be found below. We start the season on the 27th August at home against Holwell Sports so it would be nice to see some of you down at Hood Park cheering the boys on. We have 18 players signed on and things are looking good as we prepare for yet another season. It has been nice to see George Clamp, Jack Hoult and Oscar Blair-Park being involved in pre-season for the reserves while Angus Blair-Park has been featuring for the 1st Team, which just shows that the system we have in place at the club is working. Well after last week’s great result it would be nice if the boys could strike a blow against one of our local rivals this afternoon and may I wish Tony and the boys all the best today in what promises to be an enthralling fixture. SUNDAY TEAM UPDATE In the seven days since our last update the Sunday Team have had two pre season fixtures, the first a 2-0 win against North Leicestershire League Division 3 outfit Ravenstone United Reserves, a tough game given the hosts included a number of first team players in their match day squad. Richard Commons gave us the lead midway through the first half from the spot after the Ravens goalkeeper appeared to upend Marcus Jinks in the home side’s penalty area, Commons added his second of the game 15 minutes from time after Ravenstone’s substitute keeper spilled Patrick Conway’s long range effort at the striker’s feet for an easy finish. Last Sunday we welcomed Donisthorpe to Hood Park in extremely wet conditions, Commons picked up where he left off on Wednesday and drove in a wonderful 20 yard free kick straight into Donisthorpe’s top corner on 25 minutes. The visitors managed to cancel that goal out midway through the second half after a scramble from a corner made it 1-1, but Commons turned provider with little more than a minute of normal time remaining as his left wing cross was met by the right boot of Ben Earp who sealed the game with a tidy volleyed finish from 8 yards. Our final pre-season fixture will take place tomorrow morning at Hood Park, Springfield FC the opposition on this occasion with kick off at 10:30am. Our opening league fixture at home to Winshill Parish is the following week (24th August). Stuart Mann Sunday Team Assistant Manager

DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH THE MOG We have had many memorable encounters with Bardon Hill down the years, however with Bardon reaching the East Midlands Counties League a few seasons before us those meetings have recently been in the Coalville Charity Cup. In the 2010 semi final we gave them a good game before conceding 2 very late goals to leave the score an unflattering 4-1 so we’ll gloss over that game I think. Worthy of mention though was that our goal was scored by Richard Hanslow and we welcome “Itchy” back to Ashby today and hope he hasn’t brought his shooting boots. A year later we took our revenge in The Final, and what a game it was. The game didn’t start well and we were 2-0 down after only 11 minutes and frankly it could have been worse but for tremendous goalkeeping by John Noon, but if we were woeful in the first half we were sensational in the second. After I imagine some stern words from Manager Kev Allsop we came out a different side in the second half and after only 2 minutes we had pulled a goal back. Steve Hart (whatever happened to him?) swung in a corner and Mark Muir (nice to see the former fans favourite in the crowd last week) was on hand to tap in. We then dominated the game and Ben Pollard set up a grandstand finish with the equaliser with 10 minutes to go. What we needed now was an Ivanhoe legend to win us the game, step forward Chris Nettel. With 5 minutes to go he rose highest from a Mark Muir corner to loop a header over the keeper to spark celebrations from the large travelling support. “Sting” had scored twice the previous week to secure the Senior League title so it was a fantastic week for him and the team also our man of the match that night was centre half, Greg Smith who played a very important part in our success that season. Our first Coalville Charity Cup, one of the great Ivanhoe nights. A year on in attempting to defend the Cup we again faced Bardon, and again won 3-2. This time a hat trick from, you guessed it, Phil Gibson. Again we went behind in the game but Phil equalised to make it 1-1 at half time, we conceded again just after half time but when Phil converted a Mitch Jordan cross there looked only one winner. Phil’s 3rd came with 10 minutes to go this time Sam Kirk providing the cross. Gresley were up next in the Semi Final but we’ll gloss over that one too. So there we are, there’s always been goals in this fixture so let’s hope for the same today & another 3-2 would do us all nicely. Enjoy the game Dave Morris Club President

ASHBY IVANHOE FC SUPPORTERS CLUB A warm welcome to everyone here today for Ivanhoe’s match against local rivals Bardon Hill here at the NFU Sports Ground. Last week after an indifferent start changes were made at half time and we started to play better football and eventually won 2-1 with a great late winner from Luke Thorogood. Well done lads a good start to the season in front of a great home crowd. Now to todays match against Bardon Hill who after losing last week at home to Aylestone Park are still pointless and I’m sure will be desperate for a good result here today so come on lads let’s get at them. My prediction for today is a 2-2 draw. We also wish Craig and our reserve side all the best as they start their campaign today in the Leicestershire Senior League away at Anstey Nomads Reserves. Ground improvements are on-going and if anyone would like to help please let us know as another pair of hands would always be appreciated. Don’t forget if have any comments regarding the club please e-mail me at mh.buckley@btinternet.com Mick Buckley - Supporters Club Chairman

THE OPPOSITION BARDON HILL Bardon Hill Football Club resides on the slopes of the highest point in Leicestershire, at 912 feet or 278 metres which ever you prefer, Bardon Hill is indeed only 88 feet short of being a mountain. The football club can trace its roots back to the late 1890`s when it played under the name of St. Peters Church. The club has played under various titles over the years including Bardon Hill Granite and Bardon Hill Sports Club. The decision to change the club name to Bardon Hill was taken in 2008. The club has played in various leagues during its 120 year existence, mainly local Coalville leagues, the Leicester & District League and The North Leicestershire League. The club moved to their present ground in 1990 when the quarry needed the old ground behind the church for expansion. The facilities demanded a higher level of football and the club committee, with John Tomlinson and Stuart Hagger in charge of the team decided the time was right in 1994 when the club applied for and was accepted into the Leicestershire Senior League. The club gained promotion into the Premier Division of the LSL in 2005 after coming runners-up in Division 1 under the guidance of Gary Irons. The club finished 5th in 2008 granting them a place as one of the founder members of the newly formed East Midlands Counties League. The first season in the new step six league proved difficult with the club eventually finishing bottom but one, but the following season saw a remarkable turnaround in the clubs fortunes, finishing fourth in the league after looking like winning it up until the last couple of games of the season and reaching the 2nd Round Qualifying of the FA Cup where the club lost to Northwich Victoria of the Blue Square North. Mid table finishes have followed since and the club in its efforts to progress has this season appointed a new management team of Don Gethfield, Dave Weir, Darren Bradford and Rich Whittle. The club is run by a small and very dedicated band of volunteers who work tirelessly to try and move the club forward, this has seen the facilities at Bardon Close improve beyond all recognition and has culminated in the award of a £50,000 grant from The Club Futures Scheme to put new bar and kitchen facilities within the ground. We hope that in the near future we will be able to climb the “Mountain” of promotion and take the club as far as it can go through the non-league system.

CLASSIC MATCH VS BARDON HILL BARDON HILL 2-3 ASHBY IVANHOE Coalville Charity Cup Final Monday 2nd May 2011

Ashby Ivanhoe clinched the Coalville Charity Cup Final after a thrilling second half performance saw them overturn a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Bardon Hill 3-2 and end a superb season on a high by completing a league and cup double. It was the current holders Bardon who made the better start to the match and although both teams had an early chance at goal when Bardon fired over and Ashby saw a Chris Nettel shot saved it was Bardon who took the lead in the eighth minute when a ball into the area was only half cleared and the loose ball was played out to the right and a low cross into the area was turned in from close range. The chances kept on coming for Bardon and they had a chance to score a second in the tenth minute when another cross the right caused problems but the shot was well saved by John Noon but just a minute later Bardon did double their advantage when a long ball forward saw the striker behind the Ivanhoe defence and despite Noon getting a hand to the shot the ball found the net for 2-0. Ashby needed a quick response and they did have a chance to pull a goal back almost immediately but after Bryan Barker had ran down the right his cross into the area was headed goalwards by Ben Pollard but the keeper made a comfortable save. Bardon should have increased their lead further just before the half hour mark when a good ball forward saw the striker in on goal but after being put under pressure from the defence his shot was narrowly wide of goal. On the stroke of half time and with Ashby restricting the opposition chances they nearly pulled a goal back when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal and Steve Hart struck a powerful left footed which wasn’t too far away leaving them trailing 2-0 at the break. The second half though was nothing short of sensational from Ashby and from the first whistle they were determined to turn the match around and they couldn’t have hoped for a better start when just two minutes in they halved the deficit when Hart swung in a corner from the right and with Bardon unable to defend the ball in it was Mark Muir who tapped in from close range for 2-1.

CLASSIC MATCH VS BARDON HILL Ashby were now getting on top and they were creating more and more chances as they went in search of an equaliser and in the 55th minute a long ball forward from Jon Smith was brought down by Phil Gibson and after creating space for the shot the keeper got down to make the save and on the hour mark the keeper was again called into action when Hart worked the ball into the area before cutting the ball back to Pollard who saw his shot saved. Ashby have pulled out many a great result when needed this season and as the match entered the final 15 minutes they needed something special and in the 78th minute they levelled the match when a cross from the right was over hit and with the chance looking to have gone Hart collected the ball on the left of the area before sending a low ball across goal and Pollard was there to force it home for 2-2. The momentum was very much in Ashby’s favour and they sensed that the match was there for the taking and Pollard went close to a second goal in the 80th minute when he chased down a ball over the top but the Bardon keeper kept his side on level terms by producing a superb save. The decisive moment of the match came with eight minutes remaining and Bardon were left stunned when a corner from Muir on the left was played into the six yard box and Chris Nettel, whose two goals secured the Senior League a week earlier, directed his header over the keeper and into the net to complete a remarkable turnaround and spark celebrations from the large Ivanhoe support. Although Bardon pushed forward in the latter stages Ashby remained strong and led by man of the match Greg Smith in defence they were equal to anything that Bardon threw at them and after the best 45 minute display of the season they were deservedly winners of the Coalville Charity Cup for the first time.
