CHAIRMANS WELCOME Good afternoon & welcome to The NFU for today’s’ game in The East Midlands Counties League. May I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of Birstall United who we met only 5 days ago at the league cup semi final at Barrow Town. If today’s game is half as exciting as that one we have a terrific afternoon in store. For those that weren’t there how the game wasn’t 6-5 (to us obviously) I don’t know, it was a great advert for the league & without a bad tackle in the game it somehow finished with 10 men vs 9 men & thankfully we came out on top in the 98th minute. The final is traditionally the last game of the season so we expect it to be in early May, possibly even the Bank Holiday (venue TBC) & our opponents will be either Aylestone Park or Dunkirk who play each other on 11th April. If you’d like to view Quinny’s winning penalty you can do so via Facebook or Twitter both mediums get lots of interest and if you don’t already follow us (Twitter) or like us (Facebook) please do so as it’s increasingly the fastest & most fun way to keep up with events at the football club, and get me didn’t I almost sound like I knew what I was talking about. Hopefully the long spells of rain have now stopped & the pitch can get some recovery time as there are a lot of fixtures to play in the coming weeks, special mention to Ian Irving & Stuart for their tireless work on getting some games on during a grim spell of weather. We did manage to get 2 Bonser Trophy semi finals played in the last couple of weeks, they are good occasions for the club to be involved with and assist us in raising funds which as with ALL funds raised at this club go towards running it & improving facilities for both the players & spectators. To that end if anyone reading this would like to get involved off the pitch in any way please let us know as we are always delighted to receive any help however small to reduce the workload of the few. Finally, our club bar is a friendly little place, we try & put the football on the TV, keep bar prices cheap & provide quality food, before, during & after the games, again any money we take helps us run YOUR football club, so please don’t run off after the game but join us for a beer, cider, coke, whatever but join us. It gives the club atmosphere and brings the club together, we have a cup final to look forward to, let’s do that together, sorry to rant Stu but you did ask me, so that’ll teach you. Thanks for your support, it’s much appreciated, enjoy the game. Dave Morris Club President vs Birstall United | Saturday 25th March 2017 | www.ashbyivanhoefc.com

IN OPPOSITION TODAY BIRSTALL UNITED Birstall United Football Club were formed in 1961. Initially playing Sunday football in the Leicester and District League where they enjoyed great success, taking three League championships and also the Leicestershire FA Sunday Intermediate Cup. After their Sunday success the club switched to Saturday football, joining the Leicester Mutual League. Again it was success all the way with Divisions 5, 4 and 3 being won in successive seasons while the Leicestershire FA Sunday Senior Cup was also won while the club operated on both days of the weekend. 1972/73 proved a memorable campaign with the club winning the Leicester Mutual League Division One for the first time, a year later United repeated the feat and added the Leicester FA Junior Cup South by beating Oadby ‘67 by four goals to nil in the final. Birstall enjoyed a third Mutual League Championship in 1976 when the time came to make the logical progression up the ladder to the Leicestershire Senior League, Birstall being accepted into Division Two for the 1976/77 season. Birstall enjoyed two thrilling battles with Hillcroft for supremacy in their initial Senior League campaign, finishing top of the league by a single point with Hillcroft second and adding the Tebbutt Brown Cup with a 3-0 win in the replayed final after the two clubs had drawn the initial match 1-1. Thus 1977 saw Birstall in the top flight of the Senior League where they have remained to this day. So far Birstall have not won the Senior League Championship, nevertheless, have usually been amongst the leading clubs. Their best season being 1981/82 when they finished as runner-up to Anstey Nomads, but did have some consolation by beating Nomads 1-0 in the Tebbutt Brown Cup Final. Twelve months later and another final for Birstall, this time it was the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup when they lost to Hinckley Athletic by two clear goals. The 1984/85 campaign saw the Tebbutt Brown Cup won for the third time with Anstey Nomads again being beaten in the final this time the score line was 3-2. Two seasons later and the final of the Leicestershire FA Cup was reached only for Birstall to go down 1-4 to the now defunct Leicester United. A forth Tebbutt Brown Cup Final came Birstall’s way in the 1988/89 season but this time the silverware went to Stapenhill who won the match 4-0, Birstall lost 2-1 after extra time in the Senior Cup Final to Friar Lane. 1994 saw Birstall win the first Beacon Bitter Floodlight Cup and Birstall finally won the Senior Cup beating Oadby Town 1-0 in 1996. In 1998 at the beginning of the season the club won the Battle of Britain Charity Cup beating Oadby Town 1-0 in the final. At the end of the season Birstall beat Ibstock Welfare in a penalty shoot out to regain the Senior Cup, and completed the treble the year after beating Oadby after penalties. The turn of the century saw the club go through mixed fortunes both on and off the field. Although the 2nd team regularly competed for honours, the first team struggled to keep track on the leading clubs and if truth be told, the standard of the ground and club facilities declined. In 2010 however, the club was taken over by a group of members who transformed the inside of our dated clubhouse and gave us a venue to be proud of again. In 2012 the club applied for, and successfully accrued funding from the Olympic legacy fund which kick started our ambitions to bring the club back to life. Improvements on the ground started with new changing facilities, followed by re-rendering of the club, hard standing around the pitch and a 54 seater stand. During the past four years the committee have embraced the challenge of rebuilding our club, which in turn produced a massive upturn in the fortunes of the club on the field. Old stalwarts came back, recognising the efforts that had been made to improve the facilities and after narrowly missing out on promotion in 2015, the club finally achieved promotion to the East Midlands Counties League last season. This was achieved by winning the Everards Brewery Senior League. A feat we are all very proud of. Now in our 5th decade of being the largest football club in the village, the committee are relishing this new challenge that stands before us and look forward to the next 50 years.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of four adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Three. For 2015/2016 a third Saturday side has been formed who will play in the North Leicestershire Football League Division One. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and will play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.
