Very rarely will you hear me talking of what other clubs are doing (unless it is something that we feel we can learn from and improve on ourselves) as my focus is always on what we are doing and how we can improve as a club. However, I must say that what was witnessed in the reserve game on Tuesday night highlighted, yet again, why football is an incredibly dangerous and precarious business if you let it run away with you. The reserves played Hinckley AFC in the Senior Cup and a real positive was the crowd which was in excess of 100 and well supported from the away team. For those that may be aware, Hinckley went out of business a few seasons ago with increasing debt problems and were re-formed of late. Whilst I appreciate things happen in football which can be out of your control (mainly results on the pitch), what is within your control is how you manage the clubs affairs for the greater good of its longevity. The areas that I was disappointed was were the arrogance of some of the club officials from the away team (one debating whether he should pay as he should be on a list – where does he thing he is Stringfellows?), players arrogance and almost lack of respect for our facilities as a comment came over “we’ve been to worse grounds than this”, conducting a half time training session on the pitch when we have a floodlit training area for players to use and to top it all the players coming into our clubhouse to collect their pay packets. A wise man once told me that its ok to make mistakes but to repeat them makes a you a fool and I don’t know who funds the payments to players (and many foolish people do and in the EMCFL too) and it really is none of my business but to do it in the open view of everyone is something I would question if it were to happen at this club. As the Chairman it is my job along with my management team to ensure that we have stability and we do not allow ourselves to get drawn into financial chaos along the way. I mentioned in my notes last week that we have the 3 key ingredients as a club and this, together with a desire to grow is vital to our long term success. The fact that players get paid at this level and higher is of no issue to me and you cannot blame the players either as it is the clubs that ultimately pick up the tab and put themselves in vulnerable positions if individuals that foot the bill decide enough is enough. I am proud to say that we are developing a club that attracts quality players and players that want to play for the management team and the club and whilst I am sure the time will come when, as a club, we need to consider budgets, that time and how we handle it will be done with the clubs future in mind. The events of Tuesday nights game inspired me even more to know that what we have is what we have built and we are developing will be here to stay and we are all playing our part in this journey of giving Ashby a fantastic football club. I would like to thank all of our supporters for your continued support of the team both home and away. It gives me great pleasure to see so many of you watching the team and I know that the players are very appreciative too as there’s nothing better than having great support encouraging you from the sidelines. All that remains is to wish our players well today and hope we all are in for a good game. Stuart Bonser Club Chairman

FIRST TEAM UPDATE Good afternoon and welcome to the home of Ashby Ivanhoe FC. May I extend a very warm welcome on behalf of the club to everyone attending today’s match and in particular the players, officials and supporters of our opponents Holbrook Sports. Firstly, I apologise to everyone on missing the deadline for submission of my notes for last Saturday’s programme against that friendly bunch from Aylestone Park. The messaging in the programme notes reflect the key points Jose, Andy and myself “attempt” to get across to the players throughout that particular week so I have extracted the poignant part plus our take on the Holwell game: “The first ten League games of the season sees us nine points better off than at the same point last term scoring nine more goals and conceding ten less. In reality it means nothing unless we push on and continue improving our performances with tougher challenges on the horizon starting with today’s clash with Aylestone Park. Tuesday (22nd) night’s first half performance was probably the most pleasing so far as we took the game to Holwell from the start and could have been out of sight by half time. We moved the ball quicker than previous home games which was largely due to the evening kick-off, a moist surface and shorter grass. The Chairman has worked tirelessly to get the pitch right but we have had to keep the new grass longer than ideally required because of the dry weather. It would appear that the drainage has improved beyond recognition and give it a couple of weeks and I believe we will have one of the best playing surfaces in the League. Once again we took our “foot of the gas” ten minutes into the second half having failed to capitalise on good phases of play. In every game this season we have given the opposition encouragement when we have let our tempo slip. So far in a number of different ways we have managed to claw back the initiative but against the better sides in the league, of which we face one today, it will be hard to do so. Full credit to the players as they have overcome all the challenges put in front of them to date but the real test will come when we find ourselves behind to a good side.” Onto today’s notes! Although the focus is very much on the next game, which is the most important one you’ll ever play in, we do set longer term targets, breaking the season down into blocks of ten games. The player’s have a fresh target for the next ten which is more challenging than the first in terms of expected level of performance given the fact the fixtures on paper at least appear tougher. Last Saturday’s clash with Aylestone panned out as we expected as they provided us with our first real physical “in ya face” challenge. Full praise to the players as we gave as good as we got in the correct manner of course. Having to make two enforced substitutions so early on in the first half together with a couple of the lads playing with knocks made the victory all the more satisfying. As a management team we learnt quite a bit about certain players we have only just started working with and I am proud to report Saturday 23rd January 2016 is already a date etched in the memory bank of all concerned. As a player and manager I have always been a great advocate of Jack Charlton’s black book methodology. Continued on page 6

FIRST TEAM UPDATE So we got over the first hurdle in our new challenge, we emphasise week in week out the ultimate result of each game lies in the Ivanhoe dressing room, on how we prepare and apply ourselves to each individual match. If we play to instruction and apply the principles of play we work on in training we give ourselves a more than realistic chance of gaining a favourable result. Our biggest enemy is ourselves and complacency. The quote we have used over the past couple of weeks is: “You will never be entirely comfortable. This is the truth behind the champion - he is always fighting something. To do otherwise is to settle.” The key for us is we must never settle, both on and off the pitch. With respect to today’s game let’s hope we can combine the fluidity of our first half performance against Holwell with the battling qualities of last Saturday to provide an entertaining performance with the desired outcome. Without repeating myself again, to date results have been better than performances which will only take us so far but not ultimately to where we want to be. We are a work in progress and progress we will. Thank you for your support and enjoy the game. Miles Warriner First Team Management Team

MATCH ACTION VS HOLWELL SPORTS ASHBY IVANHOE 4-1 HOLWELL SPORTS EAST MIDLANDS COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE TUESDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2015
Ashby Ivanhoe stretched their unbeaten start to the season to ten matches with a midweek 4-1 victory over Holwell Sports. It was also a fifth straight victory as early goals from Kerr Horn and Danny Quinn put Ashby in control inside 20 minutes. The visitors pulled one back direct from a corner before a superb header from James Purslow and an own goals sealed the three points. The night didn’t get off to the best of starts as just seconds before kick off the NFU Sports Ground was plunged into darkness and a delay of 25 minutes followed as the generator was powered back up. But Ashby wasted little time in getting on the scoresheet and they did so with the first chance after three minutes when a low cross from Luke Thorogood was finished off from close range by Kerr Horn. The visitors had their first chance of the match on ten minutes when following a corner a header at goal was turned away by Ashby keeper Chris Hodge before the home side doubled their advantage shortly after when they were awarded a penalty after Danny Quinn was brought down inside the area and he stepped up himself and after waiting for the keeper to make his move he slotted the ball down the middle for 2-0. It could of got better for Ashby midway through the first half when they had two chances in quick succession but they were denied on both occasions by the Holwell keeper who firstly tipped away a low shot which was heading for the bottom corner before also saving the follow up shot. The final chance of the first half saw Holwell go close to pulling a goal back when they were awarded a free kick just outside the area and the shot beat Hodge before striking the underside of the bar and Ashby managed to clear and keep their two goal lead intact at the break. The second half saw Ashby start with a chance to increase their lead when a free kick was played into the area and Horn got his head to the ball but the header went the wrong side of the post before Holwell reduced the arrears on 65 minutes with a goal straight from a corner which was played deep into the area and went over everyone before finding the far top corner just inside the post for 2-1. Ashby almost responded immediately when Quinn chased the ball down the right before sending a cross into the area and Horn again got his head to the ball but this time the effort went just over the bar. With fifteen minutes remaining the best move of the match brought with it Ashby’s third goal when the ball was played across to the right for Quinn and after controlling the ball he took it to the by-line before beating a defender and sending a cross into the area and James Purslow made a run to meet the ball and power a superb header past the keeper. The lead was increased to 4-1 seven minutes from time when another cross into the area this time from Chris Waldrum caused trouble in the Holwell area and the ball was diverted goalwards by a defender and found the net off the inside of the post and there was still time for another chance when Horn sent a low cross into the area which found Quinn but he put his shot the wrong side of the post but the victory was already secured after a very good performance. MATCH ACTION VS AYLESTONE PARK
ASHBY IVANHOE 2-1 AYLESTONE PARK EAST MIDLANDS COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2015
Ashby Ivanhoe continued their fine start to the season by recording a sixth straight victory with a hard fought win over Aylestone Park. It was one of Ashby’s more difficult matches of the season so far but they came through it with goals from Royce Turville and Luke Thorogood to see their lead at the top of the table increase to nine points. The match started slowly and the first real chance of the match did come until the 21st minute when the visitors had a long range effort which was deflected just wide of the post and from the resulting corner Ashby broke forward and opened the scoring. The ball fell to Turville and from outside the area and under pressure from a defender he managed to lift his shot over the keeper for his first goal for the club. On the half hour mark Ashby had a chance to double their advantage when a ball into the area was only half cleared by a defender and the ball came to Antonio Williams but he saw his effort saved by the keeper. With five minutes of the first half remaining the visitors scored the equaliser when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal and the Aylestone player took a superb free kick to lift the ball over the wall and beyond Chris Hodge before finding the net just inside the post. Ashby’s response though was brilliant and within seconds they were back in front with a thunderous goal from Luke Thorogood. The goal came when a cross into the area from Chris Waldrum wasn’t cleared and the ball fell kindly on the edge of the area for Thorogood to power a shot straight over the keeper and into the roof of the net to give Ashby a half time advantage. The second half was a scrappy affair with the only chance of note before stoppage time coming in the 77th minute when Ashby had a chance to extend their lead when the ball broke to Turville but his shot was just the wrong side of the post. Due to the stop-start nature of the match there were eight minutes added on at the end of the match by the referee and in the sixth minute of the eight Ashby had the chance to put the game beyond doubt when they were awarded a penalty but Thorogood failed to add to his earlier thunderbolt as his spot-kick cleared the bar. The final chance of the match came just a minute later as the visitors forced a corner and they nearly found a second equaliser from it as the ball was headed just of target and with that the final chance was gone and it was Ashby who took the three points which also saw their unbeaten start to the season stretch to 11 matches. DEVELOPMENT TEAM UPDATE From looking at recent results you could be forgiven for thinking there is an air of despondency surrounding the AIFC Development team following three successive home defeats. This is far from the case though. Recent defeats against Sutton Bonington, Genesis FC and Castle Donington have been close encounters, much closer than perhaps the score lines would suggest. Signs are positive moving forward as the team has already developed a style of play which is easy on the eye and encourages players to be expressive. This weekend sees the first rest period for the Development team in the last nine weeks so the time will be spent wisely working on team shape and defending as a unit. The squad has now grown to 26 which is also a pleasing response demonstrating a willingness and eagerness of young players wanting to gain experience at a senior level. I am convinced by the mid to latter part of the season when the squad has evened out the results will match the effort and commitment of those involved. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Steven Lakin to the club as Development Team Assistant Manager. I’m sure most of you will know or recognise Steven, more commonly referred to as Stiggy, he has a wealth of playing experience behind him and an infectious personality which rubs off on the younger players, everyone is certainly aware when Stiggy is in the dressing room!!! It’s hoped he will develop himself into a willing leader/coach both off the field as well as on it. Jamie Appleby Development Team Manager

IN OPPOSITION TODAY HOLBROOK SPORTS Formed in 1931 the club uses the former facilities of the Holbrook Miners Welfare as it headquarters, with the Welfare being the clubs main sponsor. The previous tenants, Holbrook Miners Welfare FC disbanded at the end of the 95/96 season after many years of playing in the various local leagues, including the CMFL. On forming the club a decision was made by the committee to join a league that could offer the players the highest standard of football in the area, having been accepted into the CMFL, manager Grant Woodside formed his team around a former U18 side that he had previously run. This step up to senior football proved very trying for all involved in the club, players, management and committee with the results Grant stepped down after only 8 games to make way for his assistant, John Barker to run the team. The 97/98 season saw the club introduce a Reserve team with Martin Clements running the side, and with Grant Woodside having a stronger squad the club looked forward to the new season with renewed enthusiasm. But results were not going as expected. The Reserves also found the going tough, winning only 1 game themselves before Christmas. With Martin Clements already taking a back seat due to work commitments, Mick Cooper took full control of the Reserves and the committee also found themselves having to replace Grant Woodside as first team manager. The committee took the decision to appoint a manager who knew this level of football and were able to appoint Mark Webster. Marks first job, as manager was to appoint Mick Bentley as the club coach to try and install some good habits into the training and onto the playing field. This was achieved with 1st team winning 10 out of their last 12 games. The reserves saw out the season, only managing 2 victories all season, but great credit to them for seeing it out. During the close season a fence, with separate player and spectator entrances was erected at the bottom end of the ground to try and give the ground a look of a football ground instead of an open field. For the 98/99 coming season Mark Webster strengthened his back room staff by appointing Dave Allsop as his assistant and Mick Ward as 1st team Physio and also with several new players the club were hopeful of mounting a promotion challenge. For the start of the 99/00 season Mark Webster again strengthened his squad, bringing in two top class strikers. James Newton from Staveley MW and Mike Taplin the ex Belper Town and Mickleover Sports Forward. Both players went on to be the league’s leading scorers that season. With only 2 weeks of the season gone tragedy struck the club with the sudden death of defender Bob Parker. Bob, who was only 27, was sadly missed by all at the club. The team showed great determination by going onto win the Premiership Championship in only their 4th season in existence. The club once again reached the semi-finals of the Belper Nursing Charity Cup, but put in a disappointing performance to lose 3-0 to South Wingfield Ath. During the season the members of the club erected a stand to ensure that a promotion spot to the CMFL Supreme division would be secure. Their fellow league members also voted the club Premier Sportsman's award, which capped off a great season. The reserve team management was also bolstered with Kev Bunting joining Mick Cooper as assistant manager. Kev a local sports tutor brought in some good young players and the team again showed an improvement in the previous year by finishing 5th. vs Holbrook Sports |Saturday 3rd October 2015 | www.ashbyivanhoefc.com

IN OPPOSITION TODAY The teams first season in the CMFL Supreme division saw the team finish a respectable 11th and twice during the during the season the crowds at Shaw Lane topped the three figure barrier, for the visits of Heanor Town and Matlock Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup. Again the club reached the semi-finals of the Belper Nursing Charity Cup and again failed to reach the final, losing to Swanwick Pentrich Road on penalties. The glory that season belonged to the Reserves. They walked away with the Reserve Division one title by 17 points, dropping only 3 points all season. They also became the first division one team to lift the Reserve League Cup, which crowned a great season for Kev and Mick. During the season the club were successful in obtaining a grant from the National Lottery for ÂŁ4600 which enabled the club to give soccer coaching courses to local schools within the area. Money was also used to create a better disabled access to the ground and stand. The 01/02 season saw the 1st team languishing near the bottom of the table right up till Christmas, then an upturn in results saw the team steadily climb to a respectful mid-table position. A final league position of 12th was achieved, and the team managed to reach the final of the Belper Nursing Charity Cup, but a poor performance on the night saw them lose 3-0 to local rivals Holbrook Saint Michael's. With Kev Bunting unavailable for the first 2 weeks of the season Mick Cooper was left to run the Reserves opening games in the Reserves Premier Division. 2 bad defeats saw Mick step down, leaving Kev to run the reserves single handed. Great credit to Kev who despite being on his own managed to pull the teams fortune around and the team did extremely well to finish 6th at the end of the season. Kev also managed to bring in Kev Milwain as his assistant. They also managed to reach the quarter finals of the League Cup, losing on penalties to the eventual winners Shirebrook Town. Over the next 3 seasons the first team and reserves establish themselves in their respective divisions the reserves winning the league cup beating a strong Shirebrook side with a late penalty. They also reached the final of the Derbyshire divisional cup final being beaten after extra time by local rivals St Michaels. The season 05/06 brought the best finish in the Supreme Division with an excellent 3rd place. Enough for promotion had the ground met the requirements. During this time Ian McAndrew joined the club as assistant manager to Kevin in the reserves and made a positive contribution to developing the younger players both on and off the pitch. In 06/07 the first team had a disappointing season with much the same squad that done so well the season before and the reserves finishing 3rd. During the close season Mark Webster and his backroom staff resigned after a long sustained effort of running the club. The committee appointed from within by naming Kevin Bunting as manger. With a shorter period of time than his rivals to arrange his squad he retained all off the first team squad and brought in some new players who were with clubs from a higher standard. With this appointment Kevin appointed his reserve assistant as the reserve manger and Malcolm Burton as club coach. During Kevin Bunting's first season in charge the club came a creditable 5th in the league. The season saw the club also have good cup runs with the side losing the league cup semi final with a deflected shot in the last minute. The floodlit cup saw the club beat Southwell on penalties to be crowned champions. The good news continued when the club were granted promotion to the new East Midlands Counties League. The Reserves had a great season in spite of the managerial problems they encountered with Ian McAndrew resigning after the first game of the season. Adam fisher took temporary charge with Mat Hutchings taking over the reigns. A poor finish to the season saw the runners up spot just slip away after being well placed for much of the season.

IN OPPOSITION TODAY The clubs first season at Step 6 in the EMCL saw the team have a fantastic season finishing 3rd but were in contention for silverware right down to the last game of the season. The club also made the league cup final and were beaten 1-0 by local rivals Borrowash Victoria with a deflected goal late in the game. Kevin Bunting was very busy over the Xmas period bringing in an experienced local football name in Leigh Grant as his assistant, and this was to prove successful move. Bunting also moved to bring some stability to the reserves with the appointment of Paul Romney and Phil Alcock as a management team who know the local football community. At the start of the 10/11 season, Kev Bunting resigned and his assistant Leigh Grant was appointed as his replacement, Leigh made a quick impression and his notable achievements was finishing 6th in his first season, but also reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase and eventually losing out to the runners up Coalville Town after extra time, the team also reached the league Cup final but once again ended as runners up to Thurnby Nirvana. In his second season (11/12) Leigh once again finished 6th, but at the end of a difficult season, decided to resign from his position as manager, Paul Romney was promoted from Reserve team manager and went about rebuilding the squad after virtually all the first team left the club after Leigh Grants departure. The 2012-2013 season saw a new squad assembled and they finished ninth in the EMCL, they reached the last 64 of the FA Vase and also won an FA Cup tie. They also won the Belper Nursing Charity Cup for the first time in 14 years. At the end of the 2012-2013 season the club yet again seen players move to higher level, with 8 of the first team moving up through the football pyramid, seven other players moved on to other clubs within the EMCL and Paul Romney had the task of rebuilding the squad yet again for the 2013-2014 season.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of four adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Three. For 2015/2016 a third Saturday side has been formed who will play in the North Leicestershire Football League Division One. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and will play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.
