Last week’s win over Arnold Town was a great result for the team and put right many of the wrongs from the game against Stapenhill and great to see Tony with a smile back on his face. Let’s hope that we now believe in our ability as a team and that collectively the players continue to work hard. Another great turn out from our spectators and travelling support from Arnold Town too (and even our first flag made an appearance at the NFU). We thank you for your continued support and the atmosphere you are creating is great. I mentioned in my last notes that we are steps closer towards the floodlights and stand and this continues to be the case as we now push to have them erected as soon as the contractors can make it possible. I keep reminding people that just over 2 years ago we had nothing, here at the ground (not even a toilet) and as a club we have worked miracles and off our own back to achieve the facilities that you enjoy today but the need for external funding was required for the floodlights, stand and other associated groundworks. This is now all complete and we are awaiting final decisions but it looks like we are going to be re-locating the floodlights from Hood Park and re-installing them, here at the NFU. This will also mean that the Midweek Under 18’s will transfer their fixtures to the NFU when they are erected. We are pushing the contractors to a tight deadline and I should have more of an update for you in next week’s programme. We still have some work to do but it was really refreshing to speak with the Vice Chairman of Arnold Town last week who applauded the club for the facilities we currently have and even commented that they were better than theirs (and theirs cost over £2 million). The grading criteria is clear and whilst challenging at times I am very confident that, as a club, we will continue to meet the challenges and develop a sustainable and vibrant football club for years to come – watch this space. Last week saw the start of the Midweek Under 18’s League campaign and yet again, Alex Roome, has assembled a good squad of talented players and this again will only pay dividends not only for him this season but for the club as a whole as they challenge for Senior positions too. This week sees the start of many of the clubs Junior teams league campaigns and I wish all the players and coaches the best of luck. As a club we continue to re-invest money back into our Coaching and it pleases me to report that all of our Coaches are now a minimum level 1 FA Coach. This investment into them, alongside the support of our development coaches will, again, help players develop the “club way” and this can only be the right thing to do for the future of the club, its players and coaches. Once again thank you for your continued support it really is appreciated and it is also great to see many of the old “Ivanhoe players” visiting the ground on a regular basis. Enjoy the game Stuart Bonser - Club Chairman

FIRST TEAM UPDATE I would like to give a warm welcome to the players and officials of Borrowash Victoria Football Club. In previous years Borrowash Victoria have been pushing for promotion and I know many clubs in this league have used them as a bench mark standard for step 6, especially those clubs who aspire towards gaining promotion. I believe that under Dick Pratley’s leadership we will have to be at our best to gain points from this fixture. They say 24 hours is a long time in football, well let me inform you all, waiting 5 days to kick another ball in anger after Bank Holiday Monday’s poor performance was excruciating to the point of torture. However, last Saturday, credit is due to our players as I thought their performance, commitment and application met our supporters’, club officials’ and the management team’s expectations. I felt the players dealt with a difficult 25 minutes admirably in the first period as Arnold Town were very dominant and direct. As the game progressed, I thought the players started to stamp their authority on the game until we scored. Leading 1-0, our players dropped off the pace and 10 minutes from the half time break, they allowed the visitors back into the game. Once again, the players failed miserably to deal with a relatively basic defensive situation and we ended up going in at half time level scores. However, I felt the players were relentless in their pursuit of gaining all three points. The pleasing aspect of managing this team is that all the 1st team squad gets on exceptionally well and it showed with the new players that have joined the club. The sharing of the workload between Tozer and Stinger was parapsychological at times and the combination play of Sharpy, Saunders and Gibson was intuitive and pleasing to watch. Consistency is the target I’ve given the players and my management team and collectively, I’m hoping it creates more success for Ashby Ivanhoe on the pitch. Enjoy today’s game. MATCH ACTION VS ARNOLD TOWN ASHBY IVANHOE 5

Tozer 13, 88, Sharp 50, 64, Nettel 80

ARNOLD TOWN 1

Spiers 35 East Midlands Counties Football League Saturday 30th August 2014 Ashby Ivanhoe bounced back from their Bank Holiday defeat at Stapenhill by putting in a great performance to send visitors Arnold Town back to Nottinghamshire on the end of a 5-1 defeat. Luke Tozer headed Ashby in front before the visitors levelled before the break. The second half was dominated by Ashby and goals from Daniel Sharp (2), Chris Nettel and a second from Tozer completed the scoring. It was the home side who began the match the better and on seven minutes they went close to the opening goal when a long free kick from near the halfway line was played into the area and Tozer went to send a header at goal but he failed to connect and the ball arrived at the keeper at speed and he had to react quickly to tip the ball over the bar. Ashby did take the lead with their next chance though and it was Tozer who this time got his head to the ball to head home. The goal came from a free kick which was awarded just outside the area to the right and Luke Thorogood floated the ball into the area and Tozer headed beyond the keeper into the corner of the net. They had a chance to double their advantage on 20 minutes when Elliott Bott quickly gained possession after the ball had ran loose and he then advanced on a run towards goal and after going past two defenders he sent a low shot towards the far corner and despite beating the keeper the ball clipped the outside of the post and behind for a goal-kick.

MATCH ACTION VS ARNOLD TOWN The match was level at the break with Arnold finding an equaliser ten minutes before half time when the ball was brought down on the edge of the area and the shot was struck through a crowded penalty area and past keeper, Chris Hodge to make it 1-1. The second half though belonged to Ashby and within five minutes of the restart they edged themselves back in front when Chris Saunders took the ball down the right before sending a pin-point cross into the area and Daniel Sharp got above the defender to power the ball beyond the keeper. Ashby continued to create chances and they could have doubled their advantage twice in quick succession when firstly Sharp chased the ball down the left before his cross found Saunders in the area but the shot was wide of the target before a couple of minutes later the ball came to Chris Nettel inside the area and he sent a shot back across goal which was straight at the keeper. The lead was increased to 3-1 though with the next chance at goal on 64 minutes and it was another fine effort with Sharp adding his second of the match when he got beyond the defence and with the keeper off his line he lobbed the ball over him and into the net. Ashby’s fourth goal came with ten minutes remaining when the ball was finally put away at the third attempt. Firstly substitute Scott Cordy who had only been introduced a couple of minutes before saw his effort blocked on the line and with Arnold desperately trying to clear the ball fell to Phil Gibson but his shot was also blocked and the loose ball then fell kindly to Nettel and he sent a low shot through the crowded area and into the bottom corner of the net. With five minutes remaining Chris Hodge was called into action to stop Arnold pulling a goal back when a long range effort from distance was destined for the top corner but he produced a fine diving save to tip the ball behind for a corner which came to nothing before Ashby completed the scoring two minutes from time when from a corner the ball found Tozer at the back post and he headed home his second of the match to complete a superb performance from the team. UNDER 18S UPDATE Firstly may I extend a warm welcome to the supporters, officials and players of Borrowash Victoria for today’s fixture. I’m pleased to report that the youth team got off to a flying start after putting on a five star performance against Holwell Sports. Nice to see a good crowd down at ‘The Fortress’ and it was also nice to see a few past Youth Team legends showing their support. Goals came from Jamie Fitzgerald, Elliott Beldon, Ben Smith, Ryan McMenamin & skipper George Clamp. It was a fine performance with a lot of promise being showed so it bears us in good stead for the coming season. New boy James Grice claimed the Man of The Match award with a fine performance in midfield. We now look forward to Barrow Town on Wednesday (will be the Wednesday just gone when you’re reading this) to hopefully carry on how we’ve started and I will update you in next week’s programme. Well after last week’s great result it would be nice if the boys could keep the momentum going and may I wish Tony and the boys all the best today in what promises to be an enthralling fixture. DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH THE MOG “We’ve got an App” announced Charlie, “that’s great news I said, what’s an App?” Anyway once my son had explained it to me AND managed to install it on my phone it really does look great. So we now have an App to go with our Twitter account, which is great for following our games if you are not there. In fact its so real time I knew that Luke had missed a penalty last season before he’d even started his run up. Back in the old days (dear me I’m getting more of an old fart every week) we had no idea how the Reserves or First team had done until they walked into the pub either smiling or grimacing. Now we get a text, a tweet and an update via the App, when Charlie’s worked out how to update it. Anyway good to see the article in last week’s superb programme, great work Statto, about Jeff Astle. The article was indeed correct that he used to be club President and present the annual Player of the Season awards back in the late 70’s & early 80’s. Down the years we have had many ex professional players present the trophies such as the great Dave Mackay, John O’Hare (yes the one who dived on the half way line to win a dodgy penalty for Forest in 1979) and Kevin Hector to name just 3. They were all in the address book of Des Anderson who was Assistant to Dave Mackay when Derby won the league in 1975 and he ran The Queens Head. Des was a great guy and often watched Ivanhoe on Hood Park on a Sunday morning. His pub was always worth a visit on a Saturday when he would often be being picked up by the Newcastle team bus managed at the time by his mate Kevin Keegan or later at night when some of his other footballing mates would stop off on the way back from games. Jim Smith was a regular and so was Ron Atkinson and I remember one hilarious night when Sam Allardyce was in the adjoining club Ciros and our now Reserve team Manager Craig Savage was trying to persuade Sam to bring his Bolton Wanderers team to take on Ivanhoe in a pre-season friendly. Obviously Sav was as usual taking his Saturday football seriously by being in a nightclub the night before a game but Sam showed no ill effects of his night out by looking as fresh as a daisy on the telly after beating Villa the next day. Well that’s about it for this week other than to say what a tremendous performance last week against Arnold Town (and their flag, a first at the NFU?). The 2nd half was superb and the boys showed real character after the Stapenhill debacle the week before (that Ciros place clearly still has a lot to answer for). Let’s hope for the same again today. Great times at the club at the moment and I am thoroughly enjoying the season and hope you are too. Dave Morris Club President

Apart from two good goals from Tozer, one from Stinger and a couple from new striker Dan Sharp. Well done lads it made the fans smile again. THE OPPOSITION BORROWASH VICTORIA Borrowash Victoria AFC was founded in the summer of 1911. Like many clubs of the time Borrowash did not start with a blaze of glory. Popular belief is that the only illumination for the inaugural meeting was the gas-lights of Elm Street. However this wasn’t to put the fledgling members off. They secured a pitch, Coffee Joe’s Field, and changing facilities. Though opposing teams must have wondered at the mile and a half walk between the two. From this modest start the club enjoyed a challenging future. Two World Wars halted play, but on each occasion the club reformed once peace returned. Off-field challenges saw the club disband and reform on three occasions. Despite all of this the will of the locals to have a football team represent their village remained unchecked. Maybe that is what makes the club motto so relevant ‘Palma non sine pulvere” – ‘No Victory without effort’. The present club commenced in 1963 when a group led by Tony Beardsley tired of the restrictions of the youth league. With the support of Albert Anderton and Neville Hardy the new team started playing in the depths of Section E of the Derby Welfare League. The new team was christened, Borrowash Victoria Amateur Football Club, or simply “The Vics” to the locals. Only three years later, and following early successes in both league and cup, the popularity of the club led to the creation of a reserve team. One major difference back then was that the teams didn’t have a manager and it was not until January 1968 that the first manager was appointed, one Mr Arnold Grace. He led the team to promotion in his opening season and developed the team’s standing tremendously until he left the club in 1968 due to ill health. Arnold did not however retire from The Vics entirely and returned as chairman in 1975. It is that type of devotion to the club that frequently marks the history of The Vics. Several names reappear as you look through the archives; players’ who hung up their boots only to stay on with the club in another capacity. No doubt it was that spirit that encouraged ex-international Alan Hinton to sign for the club in 1977, an event that saw the TV cameras at a Vics game for the first and only time. Incidentally, Alan was spotted by the cameras at the end of the game taking the nets down. I doubt any of us will see such a turn of events again. The modern era of sponsorship finally reached Borrowash in time for the 1977/78 season, Mr P Siddall a local building contractor. In exchange for bearing Siddall’s name on the shirts, Mr Siddall provided funds and a concrete floor in the equipment hut. Ever practical at The Vics. The 1977/78 season also provided the club’s first major championship, the East Midlands Regional League Premier Division. However things looked dicey at the end of the 1980/81 season with a mass of resignations from the committee. As always The Vics pulled through and a face from today made his entrance to the stage. Ian Anderson turned from playing staff to president (and sponsor). The most challenging episode in the recent history of the club also happened under Ian’s reign. In 1983 the club were threatened with expulsion from the league due to settlement of a drain below the pitch making it unplayable. In those circumstances many a club has folded but The Vics rolled up their sleeves, repaired the pitch for the remainder of the season before moving to their new and current home, The Bowl. Trials and tribulations about the pitch however continued; none worse than when the landlord (the local leisure centre) allowed it to be used for horse riding during the County Show! This however did not prevent the highlight of the club’s history from occurring in the 1985/86 season. To mark the official opening of the changing rooms and floodlights, Brian Clough brought a full strength Nottingham Forest squad to The Bowl. The evening set new records including the highest ever attendance, an estimated two thousand supporters packing the banks.

THE OPPOSITION Unfortunately Borrowash Victoria cannot be graced by such crowds every week but a hardy one hundred supporters come along, whatever the weather. Clearly the club still holds a special place in the village community. On the field, The Vics joined the East Midlands Counties League as founder members for the 2008/09 season. This proved to be the first of many near-misses with promotion, with the side finishing second just three points adrift. 2010/11 was even closer, two points this time. 2011/12 second again but seven points adrift of a very good Heanor Town side. Last season saw several significant changes on and off the field. Ian Anderson stood down as Chair after over 30 years’ service; he does however remain on the committee. His successor is Frazer Watson and he has brought some new faces onto the committee and these changes have continued this season. At the end of the 2012/13 season Ian Collins, affectionately known as “Chunky” in footballing circles decided to part ways with the club and move on to pastures new. Long serving committee member John Bishop eventually moved with Chunky to Gresley FC. John Robinson, local resident and committee member took on the reins as secretary of the club under the football leadership of Kev Bunting. This move also reunited the Kellogg family with the club with Thom and brother Sam rejoining the club as player/assistant manager and player respectively. Two weeks into the season Kev sadly resigned due to personal issues, and like their farther Neil, the two brothers took charge of the first team. The 2013/14 season had ups and downs, with the club deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, ultimately this had no effect on the promotion standings due to a loss of form at the tail end of the season. The high points of the season undoubtedly came in cup competitions, notably beating Belper Town and Chesterfield in the Derbyshire Senior Cup, only to succumb to a 6-0 defeat in the semi final to Glossop North End. Later in the season, due to Sam becoming a father once again he decided that he wished to take a back seat, and Thom enlisted the help of Dick Pratley for the end of the season, a move that was to become permanent for the 2014/15 season, along with the capture of Lee Barrow, with over 170 games experience in the Football league. Borrowash Victoria now has a successful junior setup with teams from Under 18’s down to Under 9’s. Last season those junior teams collected three major trophies and numerous other awards. It is from this young crop that the next generation of Vics will appear, following the example of former junior players who are now regular members of the senior squad.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Two. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One.
