‘Football Remembers Week’ will take place from 5-14 December. A joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council, the aim is to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium. On 25 December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. Firsthand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. All photos uploaded to social media using #footballremembers will be automatically uploaded to a special website – www.footballremembers.com. The site shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. HRH The Duke of Cambridge, President of The FA, said: “It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history. We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times.” The Football Remembers project marks the centenary of the Christmas Truce with a special focus on games of football which were played in No Man’s Land. It’s very hard to pin down the story of the 1914 Christmas Truce, and even harder to find out about the football matches. It was a spontaneous example of soldiers on opposing sides meeting, sharing comforts and even becoming friends. Naturally it was met with disapproval from military command on all sides. This wasn’t planned, arranged and recorded. But it is remembered. Today, football and Ashby Ivanhoe remember by inviting the teams and officials to join in a group photograph and if there are any supporters that wish to be part of this memorable picture then please be available before kick off - further announcements will be made on the PA. These will be my last notes before Christmas and as we have reached the half way point of the season so far I just wanted to thank all the volunteers at the club that have enabled us to continually improve the facilities we see today and to all of the spectators that have supported the various teams so far this season and to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the game. Stuart Bonser Club Chairman

AIFC vs Barrow Town | Saturday 6th December 2014 | www.ashbyivanhoefc.com
FIRST TEAM UPDATE I would like to give a warm welcome to the players and officials of Barrow Town FC. Barrow have had a good start to this season’s league campaign. They must be encouraged and positive about their current league position; as last season they found it very difficult. On current form I think this game could be an entertaining match. I would like to take this opportunity to announce that Neil Walton (Nez) has accepted my offer of becoming player coach. Moving forward I think he’ll be an absolutely fantastic addition to my management team. Since he arrived at Ashby, he has quickly earned the respect of all the players; equally, he is a calming influence to all the players on the pitch. I believe he has great leadership qualities and this promotion is a natural progression of a player of his calibre. Reflecting on last week’s encounter with Kimberley Miners Welfare FC, I thought it was possibly the most organised performance of the season. We have struggled greatly this season with general organisation of the team and management of results. However, Saturday’s performance was a strong, robust one and may it continue. It was equally pleasing because Chris Saunders delivered his best performance of the season: he led the front line extremely well and his agility and manipulation of the ball for his goal was remarkable. It was also nice to see another new boy scoring his first goal for the club: sublime technique from new boy James Purslow to score a well hit volley. Good news - Chris Nettel and Luke Tozer have recovered from their respective injury issues. However, Dan Sharp and Dan Stevenson are struggling with back injuries, Callum McBride has pulled his hamstring and Quiggy is struggling with tonsillitis. I hope you all enjoy today’s encounter. Anthony Hemmings First Team Manager

MATCH REPORT VS KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE ASHBY IVANHOE 2 Saunders 8, Purslow 15
KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE 0
East Midlands Counties Football League Saturday 29th November 2014 Ashby Ivanhoe moved back up into the top three in the East Midlands Counties League as they recorded a 2-0 victory over Kimberley Miners Welfare. Two wonder strikes from Chris Saunders and James Purslow inside the opening fifteen minutes secured the victory and from that point Ashby comfortably held on to their advantage. It was with the first chance of the match that Ashby opened the scoring after just eight minutes when striker Chris Saunders brought the ball under control before turning and sending a powerful effort beyond the keeper and into the top corner of the net. The lead was quickly doubled just seven minutes later as Ashby continued to be the better side and it was James Purslow who scored his first goal for the club and what a way it was to open his account when from 25 yards the ball sat up invitingly to be struck and the dipping volley left the keeper with no chance with the ball flying into the back of the net. Chances then became limited as the remainder of the first half progressed and Ashby’s play was possibly effected by the two injuries sustained in the first half resulting in both players being substituted but it was one of the substitutes, Scott Cordy, who had a chance to increase the home sides lead just before the break when he surged forward into the area before firing his shot wide and it remained 2-0 at the break. The second half again saw chances at a premium and Ashby were comfortably holding on to their advantage and it took until eight minutes from time before the visitors threatened a comeback with their best chance of the match when from inside the area a player beat a defender only to see his shot blocked and with no further chances it was Ashby who took all three points to remain four points behind leaders St Andrews and with two games in hand.

UNDER 18S UPDATE Firstly it was great to see all the old Ivanhoe Legends down at the NFU last week for the 10th Anniversary since Paul “Fogger” Foster’s death. I’m sure the minutes applause must have roused him from his slumber and I know he’d of been touched. I know all the boys thought it was the perfect tribute as he was a great manager, treasurer and friend and is greatly missed. As for the youth team it was business as usual as we ran out 4-1 winners at Barrow Town Youth with Jamie Fitzgerald and Elliot Beldon both bagging braces, a result which leaves us 4 points clear at the top of the league. As this programme went to print we were about to make out debut down at the NFU as we faced Oadby Town Youth in the Quarter Finals of the County Cup and hopefully we will make it a “Fortress” as we did at Hood Park and I will update you on this result and this coming weeks match away at bottom club Guru Nanak Gurdwara in my next programme notes. Wishing Tony and the boys all the best Alex Roome Under 18s Manager

SUNDAY TEAM UPDATE First of all welcome to Barrow Town and good luck to Tony and the players in another important fixture this week. It’s been a strange few weeks for the Sunday team since my last update, in what is turning out to be a rather strange season. The day after my last update we played hosts to Woodville for the second time in our third meeting of the season, the previous encounter at Hood Park had ended up in a 4-1 defeat with the following game at their place finishing 2-2. So when we went 4-0 up at half time thanks to a Richard Commons brace, a Ben Earp tap in and an audacious chip from Michael Simpson that wouldn’t of looked out of place in a professional game, I am not sure which side was most surprised. Woodville had seen an effort clatter the post and forced a good save out of keeper Adam Davis but it was no exaggeration to say we could quite easily have had six or seven by half time in what was by far our best 45 minutes of the season so far. The second half was a totally different game as a mistake at the back gifted Woodville an early second half goal and from there on in the pressure was on as the whole team seemed to panic, and when Woodville rattled their third in on 80 minutes the writing seemed to be on the wall especially when we gave the ball away straight from kick off and Davis was forced into a scrambling save. Fortunately the resulting counter attack saw Will McNeice release Commons who managed to secure his hat trick after cutting inside from the right wing. There was still time for Davis to make a top draw save to prevent a further route back for Woodville in the dying moments before the final whistle went and our place in the Divisional Cup Semi Final was secure. Sadly we won’t have any idea who, where or when we are playing the Semi Final until next year as all the other quarters are played throughout December but details will be put up on the website and in my programme notes when available. The week after was slightly less encouraging, second bottom Hilton Old Talbot came to Hood Park and further compounded our terrible league season, despite going one nil up via Ben Earp we went in at the break 2-1 down after letting in sloppy goals after being caught in possession. Hilton made it three shortly after the break with a well worked breakaway goal, a third goal of the season for myself saw us rather undeservedly get back in the game before Ben Earp missed a great chance to level things. Another good move involving their troublesome left winger saw him celebrating a perfect hat trick to restore Hiltons two goal advantage and at the other end Commons was having a very contrasting week to the one prior and missed another chance for us to get ourselves back in the game form the spot. Hilton rounded off the scoring on the break in injury time to secure a deserved victory, and cap a disappointing display from ourselves in a game that on paper was nowhere near as hard as the one we had won the previous week. Ticknall were next up at the Park in another game we really needed some points from, a very encouraging start saw us miss numerous good openings before a through ball that should have been cut out by about 3 players was ran on to by a player who should have been offside if our defence was inline. The striker in question put away the gift wrapped opportunity we’d given him well to give Ticknall the lead. George Gadsby made his return from the bench after replacing injured Nathan Yeoman’s on around 20 minutes and the substitute marked his return with his first competitive goal. George rose to Michael Simpsons dangerous cross and forced Ticknall’s stopper to tip the ball on to the cross bar before he coolly side footed home the rebound for 1-1. No goals in the second half despite 6 good opportunities for us, and a couple for the visitors who wouldn’t have been the first team to capitalise on our lack of ruthlessness in front of goal had they managed to nick the winning goal. As it was it was a second point for us but we still have a lot to do in the league if we are to survive, and the wins have to follow soon with Woodville, FC Team Wild, and Ashby Albion all visiting Hood Park in December, all sides we know we can compete with having beaten all of them in past meetings. It is another break from league action for us tomorrow though, as we look to carry on what has been an excellent cup season for us in the Junior Challenge Cup, AFC Stapenhill visit Hood Park with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs. DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH MOG Another Saturday at the NFU and another exciting game. Last week’s game was a good result on and off the pitch when we welcomed a lot of past players back to the club to remember Paul Foster (Fogger) who passed away 10 years ago last week. It was great to see so many old faces and be even greater to see them back again at some point as the season progresses. The newly revamped Legends bar looks tremendous and Stuart, Dave and Alex certainly did a great job in a very short time, well done guys. Onto my final selections for my all-time Ivanhoe XI, the 2 strikers. My first famously paid no attention to position but as his game was all about attacking I have picked him up front, it’s Kenny Horn. As it’s my team & my opinion I can say he’s the best player to have played for the club. When he was on it he was simply unstoppable, mind when he wasn’t he just walked off got changed & cleared off. I remember one game in particular against Telefusion (who were a very good side at the time) & we won 4-0 away & Kenny almost beat them on his own scoring all 4. In another game I recall the opposition shouting “eh ref can we have a ball please cos he’s playing with ours”. Kenny could play with either foot, he was quick and could handle himself too which was handy as most of the footballers in Burton & District were queuing up to kick him. Indeed he was only stopped on one mazy run after beating 5 or 6 players when the linesman lost patience & walked over the touchline to leg him up himself. Then as a manager he took us out of the North Leicestershire League into our new era within the Leicestershire Senior League & the FA Pyramid system, his place in Ivanhoe history is very much assured. My last selection is Kev Allsop. 57 goals in one season should be good enough on its own but Kev added much more to the club than that. In that record breaking season he scored 16 in one game (we won 24-0) and the week before he had scored 11. An out & out goal scorer, powerful with either foot and good in the air he was simply clinical in and around the box. He also demanded high standards of those around him and was an inspiration to many of the younger players coming through at the time. Kev then went on to bring that professionalism to the management of the team and lead us to the Leicestershire Senior League title, a fantastic achievement and it’s always great to see him at The NFU. We that’s my XI. Controversial maybe, but you can have your own choice soon on the board in the Legends Bar so there will be some interesting banter on the selections I am sure. Good luck to Tony & the boys today, enjoy the game. Dave Morris Club President

THE OPPOSITION BARROW TOWN Football in Barrow upon Soar has its’ origins in the late 19th century. The population of the village at that time would have numbered around 1000, compared with around 7000 today. The team, known as the Barrow Rising Stars were based at The Railway Inn (now the Soar bridge), and played their football near the Mill. Members of the Loughborough and District League, they were obviously formidable opposition as their record shows they were winners of Division 1 in 1901/02 and 1902/03 and also Division 2 champions in 1911/12. Cup success included the Bass Charity Cup, Rolleston Cup, and the County Cup. In one particular season four trophies came their way. The early years of the century saw the birth of the Old Boys (now Barrow Town). This team also played down “Mill Lane”, and comprised mainly of boys from the village grammar school, their record though did not compare with the stars. Immediately prior to the First World War another Barrow team, The Trinity were gaining prominence. Also members of the Loughborough and District League Division 1, they rivalled the stars as top team from the village. Other members of the league at that time were Quorn Havelock, Quorn Emanuel, and no less than four teams from Sileby (Imps, Excelsior, Amateurs and Vics). A referee’s match fee in 1913 was 2/6d and football boots 6/- per pair (30p). Trinity FC had an illustrious spell from 1918 onwards and during an 18 year period picked up a league championship, the league cup, and the Rolleston Cup. The Trinity’s glories could not last and 1930 saw the emergence of ‘The Gunners’ and ‘Barrow Athletic’, The Old Boys reappearing in 1932. The Old Boys were members of the Leics. Mutual League and for a while were based at Cotes Road, before moving to North Street and joining the Loughborough Alliance. After the Second World War, The Old Boys reformed in 1947 and following a public meeting at the Working Men’s Club, entered the Leicestershire Senior League with immediate impact. They reached the semifinal of the Senior Cup but were beaten by Whitwick Colliery. The competition also included Leicester City Reserves. In 1968/69 The Old Boys finished runners-up in Division 2 and were promoted to what was then Division 1. Managed by much respected local man Billy Williamson, they were also winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup and The Sileby Cup, (later renamed The Billy Williamson trophy in his honour). Soon after Barrow moved to their current headquarters at Riverside Park under the new title of Barrow Town. The success of 1968/69 was emulated by the team of 1992/93 managed by two more local favourites Arthur Chadburn and Colin Sykes. This team gained promotion to the Premier Division as champions. The 1994/95 season was a landmark in Barrow’s history with a number of records being broken. Highest ever placings for the 1st and 2nd teams. Ian Hunter’s haul of 61 league and cup goals. 119 goals scored, with an 18 game unbeaten run-in, culminating in being pipped to the Premiership title by one point. The team again consisted of the nucleus of the promotion winning side, under the same successful management team. 18

THE OPPOSITION In recent years, the club has grown in stature and maintained their Premier Division status. Three times winners of The Loughborough Charity Cup, defeating Coalville 3-1 in 1996/97, Ibstock 1-0 in 1998/99 (the competition’s centenary year), and under Richard Pitman defeating Shepshed Dynamo on penalties in 2000/01 after the teams were locked at 2-2 after extra time. Riverside Park has undergone several improvements in recent years, most notably the addition of floodlighting for both the main pitch and training area; a new clubhouse and changing rooms; a 50 seater grandstand; covered standing paddock; and new dugouts. The recent amalgamation of all junior, youth and senior teams makes Barrow Town one of the largest football organisations in the county that now caters for soccer from under eight to senior level.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Two. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 20092010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One.
