The club makes history again: A week last Monday evening witnessed the football club feature on the Inside Out show on BBC 1 as part of a documentary into head injuries and concussion. This documentary was part of the fight by the Astle family for Justice for Jeff and we were invited to be part of the documentary and I must say that the coverage we received was fantastic. If you did not manage to catch the programme then please visit the club website www.ashbyivanhoefc. com and follow the link from the home page to check it out as it not only gives great coverage of the club but covers a far more valuable message. The Club Of Choice: I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was revising the vision and direction of the club in a view to become the “club of choice” for footballers in and around Ashby de la Zouch. The purpose behind the vision is to have a clear pathway from Juniors to Seniors that develops players, age appropriately and encourages them to play at the highest level possible for the club or higher if they choose. The key areas that we are going to be working on will start next season and will feature: • Age appropriate Coaching – giving players fun, progressive and age appropriate coaching sessions • Coaching plans and support for our coaches – the provision of written lesson plans that get the best out of our coaches in each age group • Player assessments and player appraisals – measuring where a player started and how far they have developed is key to the players continued involvement • Seemless integration from Junior football to youth football and onto Senior football – providing a clear pathway for players to see and want to be part of The evidence of the work we are doing already to progress players to play at the highest level they can at the club was again seen at the match at Aylestone Park when Josh Riley came on as a 2nd half sub to make his debut and he can be proud of his first appearance in a senior shirt. The week prior, George Clamp, also made his debut and I am sure many more will feature in the coming months as games come in thick and fast for the club. All that remains is to hope we all have an enjoyable afternoon of football and thank you for your support. Stuart Bonser Club Chairman

FIRST TEAM UPDATE I would like to welcome the players and club officials of Holwell Sports FC. The previous encounter saw Ashby win 7-0 but today’s opponents have recently been on a fine run of form which has seen them move into the top half of the table and today’s fixture will be a difficult encounter. At present, the squad is very confident and there’s a great togetherness with the players: they are listening to instructions and clearly carrying them out to the letter, which enables them to simplify their game and win football matches. Reflecting on the previous four games it’s been a productive February in terms of the players getting back on track with winning football matches. The game against Blaby at home was an excellent team performance from start to finish. We have now found a group of players that complement each other and are playing well together. We have now got midfielders who can play attractive football. I also thought - when we had a man sent off - we weren’t in any danger of losing the match. In fact with 10 players we took the lead. The away fixture at Barrow wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would have been. Once again we dominated the game from start to finish and it was the first time this season I was able to pick the same 11 players, which I believe was the key to winning 4-1. At the away fixture at Aylestone Park FC, we were missing 2 of our key players because during the game against Blaby we had 2 players sent off and these players were serving their suspension, which affected the squad selection. The first half proved to be a difficult encounter as we were playing against the wind, equally, as a squad they were playing as individuals rather than a team. However, we regrouped at half time and dealt with a number of issues that happened in the first period. Absolute credit must go to this group of players; they delivered an outstanding second half performance - scoring 6 goals. The bonus of the day was Josh Riley who made his first team debut at 16 years of age and he was outstanding creating 2 goals and came close to scoring 2 goals himself. I think today’s game will be an exciting game. Please get behind the team. Anthony Hemmings First Team Manager

UNDER 18S UPDATE Firstly, I‘d like to welcome Holwell Sports FC to the NFU Sports Ground for todays East Midlands Counties League fixture. Well it’s been an interesting start to the year for the Youth Team. A disappointing draw against Birstall saw us drop some vital points in the league and then we were knocked out of the League Cup in the last kick of the game just when it looked like going to penalties. Thankfully we returned to winning ways with a convincing 7-1 thrashing of Coalville Town last week that puts us into 2nd spot with 2 games in hand. It’s also been nice to see George Clamp, James Grice and Angus Blair-Park make the 1st team squads in the past few weeks which further reinforces the system in place at the club. You may have seen the Youth Team star in the recent Inside Out East Midlands programme regarding head injuries. This was great exposure for the club and the Justice for Jeff campaign and I know Elliott Beldon was overjoyed that they had caught his goal as part of the footage! And on that bombshell I’d like to wish Tony & the boys all the best today and here’s to another 3 points. Alex Roome Under 18s Manager

DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH MOG Good afternoon and it’s great to be back at The NFU this afternoon after two successful away trips to old Senior League rivals Barrow and Aylestone, let’s hope the weather is ok and we have a game to watch. Talking of weather, my son has just started playing (again hurrah, he’ll hate that) for the Sunday team and I have had a few er enjoyable Sunday mornings freezing on the touchline over the last few weeks. It’s been a few years since I watched Burton and District Sunday League games and in some cases nothing seems to have changed, 20 years on and Edge Hill are still top and Moira United are still bottom, but what I couldn’t believe is that there are only now 5 leagues! Back in the 80’s when I started playing I remember being told that Burton & District Sunday League was the largest in the country with a 9 league set up, and Ashby Ivanhoe flitted between the Premier & Division One as I recall. So why is that? Well apart from the general laziness of the youth of today (“oh shut up you old fart”) many of whom would rather spend hours gazing into their PS4/iphone/tablet/MP3 player (yes I am looking through a Curry’s manual) than having to actually put their own posts up, travel to the back of beyond, run around for 90 minutes on a ploughed field but guess what have a great laugh doing it. I also believe that the licensing laws worked in our favour in those days too. There were no Ashby nightclubs to keep you out until 3am, the pubs shut at 11pm & god knows they didn’t open until 7. So even the most committed slurper couldn’t be in too much of a state to not get up on a Sunday morning. Indeed at many of the grounds we used to get changed in pubs themselves Joiner’s Arms, Woodville, Builders Arms, Linton away etc etc. Anyway, that’s another rant over & I know that Stuart and the club’s management are fully committed to improving our Sunday offering so I look forward to more Sunday touchline action in the future. Back to Saturday’s and we are playing some exceptional football at the moment which is a pleasure to watch. Congratulations to Tony and all the team, let’s get another 3 points today and see how far we can push the leaders in the closing weeks of the season. Enjoy the game. Dave Morris Club President
ASHBY IVANHOE FC SUPPORTERS CLUB A warm welcome to everyone here today for Ivanhoe’s East Midland Counties match against Holwell Sports here at the NFU Sports Ground. Our last four matches have all been won with a brilliant home win against then table toppers Blaby & Whetstone, a 4-1 win at Barrow, a comfortable 6-0 rout at Aylestone Park and finally a great midweek 2-1 away win at South Normanton but we still remain in 6th position so with six home matches left (including today) let’s see if we can get the right results to attain a higher league position. So to today’s match against Holwell Sports who I’m sure will be trying very hard to avenge the 7-0 defeat inflicted on them by us at their ground earlier in this season but even with injuries and suspensions etc my forecast is a 3-1 win for the lads. The Reserves won 3-1 at FC Khalsa last week to keep them at the top of the table. Well done lads. Good luck to all our teams this weekend and don’t forget if have any comments regarding the club please e-mail me at mh.buckley@btinternet.com

THE OPPOSITION HOLWELL SPORTS Holwell Sports started life as Holwell Ironworks Football Team in 1902. The ground at Asfordby Hill is where most workers employed at the Holwell Iron Works lived and where the working men’s club was set up for social and fitness activities. The unique club emblem of the Stanton Horse with an arrow through its chest originates from the crest of the Crompton’s, a Derbyshire family who’s involvement with the original Stanton Ironworks group dates from 1855, the group lasting for more than 80 years. The crest symbolises the death of horsepower and the emergence of electricity power generation. When the works needed to meet market demand in the 1870’s it was decided to work through the night but the company found it impossible to provide adequate lighting using portable lamps or gas lighting. Crompton had read of the development of the electric arc light and bought some French machinery and lamps, thereby transforming the group’s output after installation in the works. Crompton went on to design a new type of generator and began manufacturing electrical plant on his own as Crompton and Crompton, much later to become Brooke Crompton Parkinson in the 1960’s and part of the Brush and later Hawker Siddeley engineering groups of the eighties. There are, to this day, Brooke Crompton Parkinson motors driving industrial machines. Holwell’s most famous son was Dixie McNeil (born 16 January 1947 in Melton Mowbray) who famously played as a striker. As a schoolboy, McNeil signed for his local club Leicester City after playing for Holwell Works. However he did not fit into the First Division side's plans and was released. He eventually made his football league debut for Exeter City in the 1966-67 season against Wrexham, a club he would later play for and manage. Dixie was a nickname to savour, associating him with the country’s most famous footballer of his day, Dixie Dean, who set a record when he smashed 60 league goals for Everton in the 1927/28 season. In 1988 the Holwell Works closed and the club’s name was changed to Holwell Sports Football club. In 2007 Holwell approached Corus who own the waste land around the facility and secured a 30 year lease on part of this ground to generate a new training area, at the rear of the main pitch on Welby Road, this is still an ongoing development. In 2008/2009 Holwell gained promotion to FA level 6 on the national football league pyramid, one of the first clubs in the EMCL league where we compete against teams from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as well as teams from Leicestershire. In this first season Holwell finished a respectable seventh. Our reserves continue to play in the Leicestershire Combination League, and Youth team in the Midweek Floodlit Youth League. Holwell had its best ever season in the EMCL in 2012/2013 having gone on a run which saw fourteen out of eighteen straight league wins from the beginning of the year finishing fifth with FA Cup qualification. Holwell had one of its most successful seasons last year reaching the third round proper of the FA Vase.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Two. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 20092010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One.
