CHAIRMANS WELCOME Good evening and welcome to tonight’s Jenkins & Jenkins League Cup 2nd Round tie against Holwell Sports and may I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and spectators of Holwell Sports and hope that you enjoy your visit to the NFU Sports Ground. The new management team have only been in charge for two matches but there is now a more positive feeling around the club and this has shown in the results of the two games. It was a great performance last Tuesday night in seeing off Gedling Miners Welfare 7-1 with Luke Thorogood netting hat-trick with further goals from Evan Cawley and new signings Luke and Daniel Edwards. A report from this match is on page 11 of this programme. They then followed this up on Saturday winning 5-1 at Belper United with another hattrick from Thorogood and a double from Luke Edwards. On the subject of new signings last Tuesday you will have noticed a number of new players and they instantly looked at home in the team and along with the quality and committed bunch of players we already had at the club this will help push the team forward throughout the remainder of this season and into next season as well. Tonight sees the team take a break from league action for this second round league cup tie with a place in the quarter finals at stake. Let’s hope we can produce another positive performance like the last two matches as this is a great chance of silverware come the end of the season. Leicestershire Senior Cup The draw for the quarter finals of the Senior Cup has seen the reserve team drawn away at Heather St Johns of the Midland League Division One. The match will take place next Tuesday (29th November) with kick off at 7:30pm and it would be great to see a good travelling support for this local derby with a place in the semi-finals awaiting the winners. Thank you for your support and let’s hope we all enjoy tonight’s match. Matthew Lester Programme Editor

GEDLING MINERS WELFARE
EAST MIDLANDS COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE TUESDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2016 _______________________________________________________________________________________ ASHBY IVANHOE LINE-UP: Scott Reynolds, Conor Bennett, Evan Cawley, Tom Rowell, Sam Johnson Ryan Pearce, Luke Thorogood, Daniel Edwards, Luke Edwards, Royce Turville, Josh Riley SUBSTITUTES USED: Jake Conkay, Chris Nettel, Joe Stubbs GOALS: - Luke Thorogood (7, 18, 81), Evan Cawley (32), Luke Edwards (39), Daniel Edwards (51), Own Goal (29) ATTENDANCE: 77 _______________________________________________________________________________________ The new management team of Lee Attenborough and Steve Titterton brought a change of fortune to Ashby as they recorded a first league victory since October 1st with a dominant 7-1 victory over lowly Gedling Miners Welfare. Luke Thorogood led the way with a hat-trick with further strikes from Evan Cawley and two debutants Luke and Daniel Edwards the other goal coming via an own goal. The match began in thick fog with Thorogood giving Ashby an early lead after just seven minutes and that lead was doubled on 18 minutes when Josh Riley was brought down on his way to goal which resulted in the visitors being reduced to 10 men and Thorogood stepped up to strike a low free kick round the defensive wall and into the bottom corner. Ashby increased their lead to 3-0 just before the half hour mark when a long ball forward was over the Gedling defender and Riley ran onto the loose ball before his ball across the area took a deflection off a defender which took the ball past the keeper. It quickly became 4-0 to Ashby on 32 minutes with the best goal of the match when Evan Cawley beat a couple of defenders inside the area before striking a powerful left footed effort which beat the keeper at the near post before finding the net off the inside of the upright. Ashby completed a superb first half showing six minutes before the break when the ball was passed forward to Luke Edwards and to the right side of the area he struck a low shot across goal which found the far bottom corner to make it 5-0. The second half started with more goals and just five minutes in the visitors pulled a goal back when Ashby failed to clear a corner and the resulting shot found the top corner. Ashby quickly responded though and within 60 seconds of the restart they restored their five goal advantage when the ball was played into the area which fell to Daniel Edwards and his shot, despite striking a crowd of players, had enough power on it to see it over the line and make it 6-1. Ashby continued to be the better side but their seventh and final goal didn’t come until nine minutes from time when Thorogood completed his hat-trick when after taking the ball past a couple of defenders he placed his shot across the keeper and into the bottom corner to complete a comfortable victory.

IN OPPOSITION TODAY HOLWELL SPORTS Holwell Sports started life as Holwell Ironworks Football Team in 1902. The ground at Asfordby Hill is where most workers employed at the Holwell Iron Works lived and where the working men’s club was set up for social and fitness activities. The unique club emblem of the Stanton Horse with an arrow through its chest originates from the crest of the Crompton’s, a Derbyshire family who’s involvement with the original Stanton Ironworks group dates from 1855, the group lasting for more than 80 years. The crest symbolises the death of horsepower and the emergence of electricity power generation. When the works needed to meet market demand in the 1870’s it was decided to work through the night but the company found it impossible to provide adequate lighting using portable lamps or gas lighting. Crompton had read of the development of the electric arc light and bought some French machinery and lamps, thereby transforming the group’s output after installation in the works. Crompton went on to design a new type of generator and began manufacturing electrical plant on his own as Crompton and Crompton, much later to become Brooke Crompton Parkinson in the 1960’s and part of the Brush and later Hawker Siddeley engineering groups of the eighties. There are, to this day, Brooke Crompton Parkinson motors driving industrial machines. Holwell’s most famous son was Dixie McNeil (born 16 January 1947 in Melton Mowbray) who famously played as a striker. As a schoolboy, McNeil signed for his local club Leicester City FC after playing for Holwell Works. However he did not fit into the First Division side's plans and was released. He eventually made his football league debut for Exeter City FC in the 1966-67 season against Wrexham, a club he would later play for and manage. Dixie was a nickname to savour, associating him with the country’s most famous footballer of his day, Dixie Dean, who set a record when he smashed 60 league goals for Everton in the 1927/28 season. In 1988 the Holwell Works closed and the club’s name was changed to Holwell Sports Football club. In 2007 Holwell approached Corus who own the waste land around the facility and secured a 30 year lease on part of this ground to generate a new training area, at the rear of the main pitch on Welby Road, this is still an ongoing development. In 2008/2009 Holwell gained promotion to FA level 6 on the national football league pyramid, one of the first clubs in the EMCL league where we compete against teams from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as well as teams from Leicestershire. In this first season Holwell finished a respectable seventh. Our reserves continue to play in the Leicestershire Combination League, and we have a newly formed development squad playing in the North Leicestershire League. Holwell had their best ever run in the FA Cup last season getting as far as the 3rd round taking Bedworth United to a replay and extra time. 16

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of four adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Three. For 2015/2016 a third Saturday side has been formed who will play in the North Leicestershire Football League Division One. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and will play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.
