EDITORS WELCOME Good evening and welcome to tonight’s Leicestershire Challenge Cup 1st Round tie against St Andrews and may I extend a warm welcome to the players, supporters and officials of St Andrews and hope that you enjoy your visit to the NFU Sports Ground. Last Saturday many of you would have witnessed a thrilling FA Vase tie against Hucknall Town which unfortunately we were on the wrong end of a 4-3 defeat after extra time. As in the previous round against Stone we left it very late before forcing extra time with Danny Quinn and Antonio Williams netting stoppage time goals but we failed to build on that in extra time with Hucknall advancing to the next round and good luck to them in round 2. That result ended our Wembley hopes for this season but tonight’s competition brings another reward if we were to reach the final which is held at the King Power Stadium, home of the current Premier League champions Leicester City. Last season saw us reach the Quarter Finals before narrowly losing to eventual winners Leicester Nirvana 2-1. Tonight we welcome St Andrews, last season’s East Midlands Counties League champions, and it will certainly be no easy task but our recent record against sides in higher divisions gives us plenty of hope for progression. East Midlands Counties League Cup Last Wednesday the first team travelled to Holbrook Sports in the first round of the League Cup and they progressed through to the second round following a 4-1 victory. The game was won inside the first 45 minutes with goals from Dan Stevenson (2), Danny Quinn and Sam Kirk putting Ashby 4-0 up before Holbrook scored a late consolation. The draw for the second round has given us a home tie against Holwell Sports with the match scheduled to take place on Tuesday 22nd November, 7:45pm kick off. County Cup Fixtures Tonight’s match is the first of three County Cup fixtures here at the NFU Sports Ground this week. Tomorrow night the Reserves entertain Allexton & New Parks in the second round of the Senior Cup with kick off at 7:30pm and then on Thursday night the Youth Team take centre stage as they welcome Coalville Town for a Quarter Final clash with kick off at 7:00pm. Please come along and support all our teams if you can. Thank you again for your support and let’s hope we all enjoy tonight’s match Matthew Lester Programme Editor

HUCKNALL TOWN

AFTER EXTRA TIME, 3-3 AFTER 90 MINUTES THE BUILDBASE FA VASE 1ST ROUND SATURDAY 22ND OCTOBER 2016 _______________________________________________________________________________________ ASHBY IVANHOE LINE-UP: Chris Hodge, Ali Abdillahi, Evan Cawley, Chris Nettel, Tom Rowell, Sam Johnson, Sam Kirk, Joel Carta, Danny Quinn, Kerr Horn, Ben Betteridge SUBSTITUTES USED: Josh Riley, Nick Sewell, Antonio Williams GOALS: Danny Quinn (75p, 90+3), Antonio Williams (90+5) ATTENDANCE: 121 _______________________________________________________________________________________ Ashby Ivanhoe produced a heroic last ditch comeback before falling to an extra time defeat against Central Midlands League side Hucknall Town in the 1st Round of the Buildbase FA Vase. Ashby trailed 3-1 heading into stoppage time before goals from Danny Quinn and Antonio Williams forced an extra 30 minutes. A well worked goal in extra time though gave the visitors the victory and a place in the second round. It was the first time that Ashby have ever played in the first round of the FA Vase and in the opening 20 minutes they looked the most threatening with really troubling the Hucknall goalkeeper with the best effort of the opening exchanges coming for the visitors when a snap shot from around 30 yards was just wide of the far post. The opening goal of the game came on 19 minutes and it was unfortunate for the home side following their good start but after keeper Chris Hodge had made a save the ball spun upwards and towards goal and Hucknall’s Adam Nelson beat the Ivanhoe defender to the ball to head home from close range. As a deluge hit the NFU Sports Ground the visitors doubled their advantage just six minutes later when poor defending resulted in a player advancing to the bye-line before pulling the ball back into the area and a shot from Jamie Crawford found the net for 2-0. Ashby had a great chance to reduce the deficit just after the half hour mark when a cross from the right found its way to the back post but the shot from close range was blocked and a couple of minutes later and Hucknall went close to increasing their lead when they broke forward and after the ball was played square the shot struck the outside of the post leaving the score at 2-0 at the break. The start of the second half saw a couple of chances for Ashby inside the first 15 minutes with firstly a floated effort at goal from Sam Kirk was just wide of the near post before right back Ali Abdillahi found himself inside the area and sent a shot goalwards which forced the Hucknall keeper into good save. With the clock ticking down Ashby needed a goal quickly and on 75 minutes they were awarded a penalty. It came from a good move forward which saw a ball passed through the defence for substitute Josh Riley to run onto and although his lobbed effort went over the bar the referee pointed to the spot as he was brought down by the goalkeeper. Upstepped Danny Quinn to power his spot-kick down the middle and make it 2-1 and set up an intriguing final quarter of an hour.

LATEST MATCH ACTION The final thing Ashby needed though having got back into the match was to concede quickly and that is what they did when they failed to deal with a ball to the back post and the ball was pulled back for Jordan Phillips to apply the finish and restore their two goal advantage. Nobody inside the NFU Sports Ground expected what was to happen inside the final minutes though and as the match entered stoppage time it looked all over for Ashby, trailing 3-1, but in the third minute the ball struck the bar and Quinn was there to head home and make it 3-2. Ashby then immediately pushed forward from the restart and won a free kick close to the right touchline. Before the kick was taken they made their final substitution bringing on Antonio Williams to add some height inside the area. The ball into the box wasn’t dealt with by the visitors and the ball fell to Williams and he struck a first time effort which found the bottom corner of the net sending the home fans wild and leaving the Hucknall players and supporters stunned. The referee blew the final whistle seconds later to end a thrilling 90 minutes with the teams locked at 3-3. It wasn’t to be for Ashby though in extra time and just before the end of the first period they fell behind again when a free kick from half way was hit long into the area and at the back post the ball was headed back into the danger area for Adam Nelson to fire home first time for his second goal of the match and put Hucknall 4-3 up. There was to be no more late heroics from Ashby with Hucknall advancing through to the next round.

IN OPPOSITION TODAY ST ANDREWS Rifle Butt and origins The Rifle Butt public house on New Bridge Street, Leicester was demolished along with a whole community to accommodate the extension of the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The licensee of the “Butts” as it had become known was the former Leicestershire Wicketkeeper, Paddy Corrall. The lads whom drank in the club at the time were all sports mad. There was a boxing ring, a gym upstairs and a pub darts team who were “M&B” Champions many times. The football team played friendly matches from 1965. In 1973, when the public house along with the surrounding houses was demolished, it was decided to enter a league and name the club after the newly built estate in its place, St Andrews. Years in City League The club was accepted into the Leicester City League and during the following twelve year period won forty-four honours including the Premier Division Championship on four successive occasions and the Junior Cup twice between the first team, the reserve team and the “A” team. Leicestershire Senior League Over twelve months starting in 1983, the clubhouse at Canal Street was built entirely by the club’s highly talented committee. The club was elected to the Leicestershire Senior League in 1985. Since their election the club added a further forty-one honours between first, reserves and youth team including: Three-time champions and four-time runners-up of the Leicestershire Senior League, four-time League Cup winners, three-time Rolleston Cup winners, 1997 Westerby Cup winners, two-time Leicestershire Junior Cup winners and three-time Leicestershire Combination champions. The club in this period reached the Fifth Round of the FA Vase in 1994-1995. Recent history in the East Midlands Counties League In 2008, the club was founder members of the East Midlands Counties League formed of senior league clubs from Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. In the inaugural season with a talented side the club finished a creditable 9th in a highly-competitive league. Following the loss of a majority of the players, a rebuilding process ensued over the following two season. This culminated in a 4th place finish in 2011-12 under manager Clem Dublin. The following season seen a change in management and makeup towards a very young squad, who eventually finished 16th. Andy “Pepsi” Purple was appointed first team manage for the 2013-2014 season. Pepsi’s managerial record was exceptional with massive success with Blaby & Whetstone’s first team along with cup and league trophies with the St Andrews reserve side. Along with a crop of quality youth players from are all-conquering Under 18 side brilliantly managed by Andy Ward and Sean Hickey, Pepsi signed a number of high-class, experienced players. This blend of talented youth and experience along with Pepsi’s managerial skills proved to be a good formula with early promise indicated by a brilliant away-win against eventual champions Thurnby Nirvana and the Saints topping the table for much of the first half of the season. 14

IN OPPOSITION TODAY The season saw a remarkable 8 game winning run in the FA Vase leading to a Semi Final tie against West Auckland of the Northern League. After a pulsating goalless draw in the North East, the Second Leg was played out at Canal Street in front of a record crowd of just over 1,600. A terrific strike on the hour by 17 year-old Brady Hickey put the Drews ahead. Sadly two West Auckland goals in the last ten minutes denied the club a Vase Final and a dream trip to Wembley. The exertions of the incredible Vase run had taken a toll on the league. However for only the second time in our history, a very tired St Andrews side won the Leicestershire Senior Cup to end an incredible season. The 2014-2015 season was another unforgettable season, playing scintillating football all season, the team looked like worthy champions only to be a pipped in controversial circumstances to the title by Bardon Hill on goal difference.. With Pepsi and his backroom team of Tony Maisto as assistant, coaches Jamie Sharpe, Jason Genders and Tom Orton, and physio Grace Westbury, the first team squad look to be in capable hands. With ground development now ongoing and extra committee members joining the club, the future of the club looks promising.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of four adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Three. For 2015/2016 a third Saturday side has been formed who will play in the North Leicestershire Football League Division One. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. 2014/2015 saw Ashby compete at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time and they had a very good season and secured a top six finish in the East Midlands Counties League which featured victories against all of the sides above them. The Reserve side were involved in a tight title race and it went down to a last day decider against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves but despite the result going against them on the day they were still promoted for the second season in succession and will play at Step 7 in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division for 2015/2016.
