Publisher’s COMMUNITY Letter NEWS

I

t's my birthday month! Also one of my favorite times of the year because Fall is in the air - cool crisp mornings and warm sunny afternoons. I love watching the leaves changing to vibrant colors, and the fallen ones rustling as you walk. There is a smell in the air that nothing can quite compare to. A hint of woodsmoke, cinnamon spice and fresh air. I love October! This month's cover story features Kara Newton with TKB Realty Group. Kara has been on our cover several times over the last 11 years and we are excited to showcase her new real estate office here in town. There are lots of new businesses opening in downtown Asheboro, but it's always sad when you have to say goodbye to an old friend. Dixie III restaurant closed last month, and the outpouring of love from the community

and posts remembering all the past dinners there was overwhelming. Dixie III was a staple in Asheboro for over 50 years and will be sorely missed. Get out and enjoy the beautiful weather, work in your yard, go for a walk or a hike in the beautiful mountains, take advantage of the last few days of "beach" weather, or just relax on your porch with a good book. Happy Birthday to me, and to all my Libra friends and readers!! Enjoy the Fall weather and support your local restaurants and shops when you are out.

Kara Newton TKB Realty Group Brokered by eXp Realty Turning For Sale Into Sold

K

ara Newton is not afraid of hard work. She owned All About Fashion (known as Switch It Up Cash and Consign when sold in 2014) for six and a half years and built it up to be one of the largest clothing and furniture consignment stores in Asheboro. After she sold it, she became involved with a fast-growing network marketing company and building a global team. Between June 2014 and November 2016, when she resigned, she had just under 5,000 consultants in her organization. She went to work in other network marketing companies before moving on to the corporate world.

One of the tools Kara has always embraced in any of her businesses is marketing through social media. It helped her grow her consignment business through Facebook when she started her page in April 2009, and it was instrumental in growing her team in the network marketing company. After her time in network marketing, she went to work for Burlington KIA in mid-2018. She was hired on the spot because they said they loved her energy and positive spirit. She started as the Online Salesperson and within seven weeks she was promoted to Online Sales Manager and also took over

the social media page. While she was good at her job, it did not spark her passion and she left the dealership in February 2019. On March 7th, she was sitting on her couch struggling with the feeling of having no purpose or direction and not feeling fulfilled in her career choices with no clear idea of what was next. Out of the blue, she received a text from her sister Kyla about the possibility of taking a real estate class together. The feeling of what she calls a “God Wink” washed over her, because for years her husband and friends had been mentioning real estate to her, telling her she would ‘kill it,’ but she would always brush it off. After discussing it with her husband, Jonathan, she put the class on her credit card because finances were tight and began her real estate journey. She kept it hush hush, because she was fearful of failing since all the research she had done said that there was a 50%+ fail rate in real estate. For the next several months she commuted to Winston Salem two nights a week to attend classes. She took the test to get her real estate license and on May 31, 2019, it was official. The 110 hours of studying had paid off, she passed the test. Kara says it was one of the hardest things she has ever done. She started with a local firm, which offered a foundation to learn the market, work hands-on with a Broker in Charge and other agents and began to build her reputation in the real estate world. The day after she signed with the firm, she received a text message from Tracy Garnett, owner of Garnett Landscaping,

saying he had a co-worker looking to sell. That was her first transaction, and Tracy has continued to send her referrals and she has also done a second transaction for those same clients. In her first six months she sold 10 homes, and in her first full calendar year as an agent she closed 60 homes and two rental/lease transactions. According to the North Carolina Association of Realtors, the average real estate agent sells on average 10 to 11 homes per year, but Kara has never strived for ‘average.’ In February of 2021 Kara left the local agency, becoming TKB Realty Group and partnering with eXp Realty, one of the fastest-growing residential and commercial real estate companies, with agents in the US and eleven other countries. For Kara value was super important and it wasn't necessarily eXp that drew her in, it was the people within eXp. The ability to lock arms with local and national top producers who are open minded, collaborative and willing to share every secret and strategy they've utilized to get to where they are, and most importantly the things not to do. Connecting with those types of people is invaluable and a rare find in the industry so it was a true fit for Kara. She is always focused on growth and providing the best to her clients and she found this checked all the boxes in her search. They also allow you to brand yourself with your own flare and that is super important to Kara. Kara currently works as a single agent and has parttime virtual help with the behind the scenes work but will soon be bringing on a full-time admin to free up asheboromagazine.com | 9

her time to allow her to help more people accomplish their goals of buying, selling or both. She just closed her 50th & 51st transaction for the year on September 14th and is on track to close between 75 to 80 transactions this year. Since beginning real estate a short two years ago, she has already closed more than 125 properties and enjoyed multiple referrals from satisfied clients. She currently outsells the average NC real estate agent by 500%! Kara has built a reputation for excellence and that has gotten her a lot of attention recently. She does more than just throw out a sign in the yard. She offers exceptional service creating an exclusive next level listing experience at no extra cost to the client. She uses professional photography, videography, digital marketing and much more. Real estate is always changing, and the way people purchase homes changes too. It is important to hire a real estate agent who is on top of the evolving world of real estate and in touch with how consumers do business. More and more of her business is based on referrals. Although she is not 100% referral based yet, her last several transactions in September were all due to referrals. She has also noted that the price point for the homes she is representing has been going up as well, as she has proven herself through satisfied customers. Kara prides herself on providing next level marketing and service to her clients. You will only find the best when you choose her to represent you. Kara has a TEAM of providers she utilizes to make everything flawless. Be Bold, Stand Out and Be Extra, that’s how she rolls! With her growing success, Kara’s husband Jonathan left his family’s business four months ago to help her grow her real estate business, putting out signs, lock boxes, behind the scenes marketing and anything else 10 | asheboromagazine.com

she needs done to offer her clients the best possible service. Whatever she needs, he is there to take care of it for her. Jonathan has also taken on some housework, cooking, and laundry to free Kara up to service her clients better. Her son Jacob also helps out when and where he is needed. It is truly a family business. Kara has been keeping a big secret that she has been working so hard to accomplish! She is ecstatic to announce that she is opening an office in Asheboro on Dixie Drive. She will be the Broker in Charge at TKB Realty Group brokered by eXp Realty, located at 523B E Dixie Drive, next to Boost Mobile just across the road from Cook-Out. Look for the pink signs going up soon, the office will be open some time in October. Meanwhile, her mobile office is easy to spot around town. Her new slogan #PaintTheTownPink will be all over social media and more in the coming months. Kara looks forward to providing mentoring to other agents through eXp as they continue to reach out and list her and her agency as their sponsor and helping them expand their own sales through a strong social media presence and more. Although not a fan of public speaking, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience with others and seeing them succeed. Kara recently hosted a Lunch & Learn along with her mentor Bryan to help educate other local agents on how to leverage the power of social media. She is known among her peers as the “Consistency Queen.” “You have to show up, every single day. You won’t see results if you don’t show up and you are not consistent.” Kara plans to join the Chamber of Commerce and get involved in the community under the new agency.

While she has been busy building her real estate business, she has taken the time to join the NextGen Professionals group that meets at the Chamber and enjoys networking with other young professionals in the area. She also sponsors several school events and looks forward to continuing to add more. Even while on vacation, Kara is never without her laptop and often spends her evenings reviewing offers for her clients or putting together winning bids. She has even been known to slip out of the house in her PJs to put up a sign or put a lockbox on a door late at night. She works hard for her clients 24/7 to make sure they always get her best. Kara and Jonathan have three children, Jacob, 18, Megan, 16, and Morgan will be 13 in November. As a family, they love taking spontaneous trips to the beach – leaving early in the morning, spending the day at the beach, and coming home that night. They also love eating out at the local Mexican restaurants and stopping at Kara’s favorite coffee truck, The American Bean, to fuel her through the day. Kara is very active on Facebook; you can check her out there! Make sure to give her page a LIKE and read her 30+ glowing reviews. Her website will soon launch at www.tkbrealtygroup.com. If you are interested in buying or selling a home, give her a call at 336.963.5377 or email her at kara@ tkbrealtygroup.com.

DRIVING PEOPLE NOT CARGO…RCATS IS IN NEED OF DRIVERS

B

Story & Photos by Kim Allgood, Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator

ruce Alston has been transporting the residents of Randolph County to doctor appointments, to drug and grocery stores, to senior centers and even to work and school for 23 years. Bruce joined Regional Coordinated Area Transportation System (RCATS) December 16, 1997 and has a message for people out there looking for a fulfilling part-time job helping others - come try on the RCATS vest and awesome responsibilities and see if this vital job is the right fit for YOU! RCATS provides public transportation service to all Randolph and Montgomery County residents on an advance reservation basis. In Randolph County, RCATS provides transportation for thousands of trips for seniors and the general public. Curb-to-Curb transportation services for older adults, persons with

20 | asheboromagazine.com

disabilities, human service agencies, and the general public are provided on a county-wide basis. Clean, comfortable, dependable vans, some of which are equipped with special accessibility features, are used to transport passengers. Drivers are trained in First Aid, CPR, defensive driving and in other safety-related areas. RCATS drivers take on great responsibility but as Bruce explains, “Being an RCATS driver definitely has its perks - for example it’s basically a Monday through Friday job and then you’re home at night. You get paid holidays and you’re not expected to drive in certain weather conditions. You get to work with people but work independently at the same time.” Also, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is NOT required, and thorough paid training is provided. Bruce does have some advice for anyone interested in becoming an RCATS driver, “You need to be able to handle a certain amount of responsibility, and you have to be good at working with the public. You also must like DRIVING!” When asked what led him to join RSAA as an RCATS driver 23 years ago he simply said, “I love driving and I’m driving people not cargo” and when asked why he has stayed with the job all these years he explained, “The older I get, I appreciate seniors more and more. It takes a lot of patience sometimes, but one day we’re all going to need some help getting around. I’ve gained so much personally.” Another faithful driver is Paul Hogan. Paul recently celebrated his 5th year with RSAA. After retiring in 2015, he moved from up north to Asheboro, NC to be with family and said he kept seeing the RCATS vans everywhere around town. He walked in the Asheboro Senior Center and asked what the buses were all about. He put in an application, was hired and has been making people smile ever since. Paul said “That’s the best part of the job – making somebody smile. I try to make it a fun time on the bus ride by joking and just finding out more about the people who are

riding. Some of these people have nobody and if I can make them smile, I’ve done my job.” Paul is well known for his special cheerleading ability when he comes in the office in the morning and back after his day’s work and hollers…and I mean hollers, “RCATS!!!!” If you’re a new employee in the office, it just might catch you off guard! Why does he do this? Paul explained, “It’s just natural. I enjoy my job, so I yell it out!” Paul spends most days transporting people to dialysis appointments. This is especially rewarding to him because for 2 ½ years his wife received dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant (which she received and is doing well). Speaking of rewarding – like most people who work for a nonprofit agency, Paul is “not doing this job to get rich. That’s not why we do this but for some, we’re all these people have”. He said, there was a day that he had an especially difficult challenging situation and he heard “God” whisper to him, “Just love her.” That’s how he treats everyone who takes his fun bus ride and hopes others will heed the call to become an RCATS driver and will just love them. At RSAA, we recognize how essential it is to continue to provide RCATS trips, especially to those who rely on it for medical purposes. The pandemic presented many challenges, but we’ve worked hard to

provide the safest environment possible—both for the rider and our employees. With these provisions in place and because of devoted employees like Bruce Alston and Paul Hogan and all the other drivers and RCATS’ leadership, RCATS hasn’t missed a single day of service since the pandemic began and most importantly, seniors who rely on RCATS for critical medical appointments haven’t had to worry. Unfortunately, we are challenged with a new situation. Organizations and companies alike have seen the past year and a half of the Covid-19 pandemic drastically affect employment. Everyone is seeking good employees to keep their businesses afloat. RSAA, too, is in great need of employees, particularly RCATS drivers. If you are someone who thinks you have the special qualities it takes and are in search of a part-time opportunity in a rewarding job helping the residents of Randolph and Montgomery counties, YOU just might be the right fit for RCATS! Please go to www. senioradults.org or call 336-625-3389 ext. 228 and apply today! Randolph Senior Adults Association is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, serving Randolph County since 1975. It is an organization of individuals who are interested in improving the quality of life for Randolph County residents who are 50 years of age and older and in serving as advocates in their behalf.

SUCCESS DESPITE COVID WAS THEME AT RANDOLPH PARTNERSHIP FOR CHILDREN ANNUAL MEETING LANIER RECOGNIZED FOR BOARD SERVICE

R

andolph Partnership for Children (RPC) elected officers, elected new directors, and released its 2020-2021 Annual Report at the Board of Directors’ Annual Meeting Breakfast held at Pinewood Country Club on Tuesday. “For the past couple of years, we’ve all witnessed a worldwide pandemic grip the world in pain, devastation, and change,” Executive Director Lisa Hayworth said. “And yet, through the uncertainty, and with your support and leadership, we’ve continued to provide professional development opportunities for early educators and support them in their classrooms— which never closed.” Three programs were highlighted, including Child Care Health Nurse, Infant-Toddler Intensive Technical Assistance Pilot Project, and Parents as Teachers, each of which had to reinvent service delivery with the onset of the pandemic. Cindy Trogdon of Randolph County Public Health spoke about the support she gave to child care providers. One of the providers stated in a feedback survey, “Cindy has provided us with crucial information for making sure we’re operating in the safest way possible…She has quickly informed us about children and families that have tested positive for COVID, answered all of our questions, and kept us up to date with the latest guidance for centers and families.” Infant-Toddler Technical Assistance Specialist Scarlet Welborn talked about using technology to provide technical assistance to classroom teachers. “We started seeing positive results thanks to the world of technology. This project was at the forefront of TA and was used as a model for creating new ideas of how to provide TA during a time when traditional face-to-face TA was prohibited,” Welborn said. Parent Educator Amanda Ratliff presented on the Parents as Teachers home visiting program. The pandemic hindered only one week of visiting, as the educators immediately adapted to accommodate virtual visits. They were able to write a grant to purchase tablets for families who needed them. “Part of the program includes family connect group

meetings, which were shifted online via Zoom during the pandemic. One surprising benefit of this was that more families were able to participate online in the groups,” Ratliff said. “Prior to the pandemic, many of our families had limited transportation to attend the groups, so being virtual helped them be able to participate.” Director of Marketing and Community Engagement & Outreach Micki Bare provided an overview of the Partnership’s 2020-2021 Annual Report. The report includes the agency’s fiscal year financial overview, sponsors and donors, programmatic accomplishments, and child data for Randolph County. The Board re-elected Jerry Moore as Chair, Marcelo Pariz as Vice-Chair, Debi Lagueruela as Secretary, and Wayne Rowe as Treasurer. Chelsie Embler, Attorney at Law; Jamee Tate, Chair of the Randolph County Family Engagement and Leadership Coalition; and Dr. Aaron Woody, Asheboro City Schools Superintendent were elected as the 2021-2024 Class of Board Directors. Board Chair Jerry Moore recognized Sarah Neely Lanier, retiring director, for six years of dedicated service. “Thank you for everything you do for young children in this county,” Lanier said. “It’s work we need to do, because these are the ones who will be caring for us one day.” “Working together, whether to raise funds or get books into the hands of young children, we have power. Power to overcome adversity. Power to build Great Beginnings and Strong Futures for our children. Power to strengthen our communities and make a positive, lasting difference,” Moore said in his closing remarks. The 20202021 Annual Report can be viewed and Sarah Neely Lanier talks about the importance of service on the RPC board downloaded at upon being recognized as a retiring Board Director with Executive Director Lisa Hayworth looking on from behind her RandolphKids.org.

WHEN YOU OWN THE RESTAURANT AND SELL IT, WHERE DO YOU EAT?

T

he year was 1982. A new restaurant had opened in town. The building was located at the corner of Shamrock Road and Dixie Drive. It had already been Ray's King Burgers, Sally's Hot Dogs and Jimmy's BBQ. But this restaurant was new and would mark a history in Asheboro for the next 39 years. It was called Dixie III. Kenyon Davidson and his sons Ken, Mark and Lee had a history of working in the restaurant business together. The Dixie was the first place. It was located where Time Square is now in downtown. Asheboro. Dixie III was on the east end of Dixie Drive, while Dixie Express was on the west end of Dixie Drive. Dixie Express is the only one known for fast food. The place that opened in 1982 was more like your mom's kitchen. It didn't serve fast food. Instead, the menu started off relatively small with favorites you would find at home. Every now and then Mark Davidson, and his wife, Kris would add a little something special to the menu, like a new salad, meat or vegetable, and the customers let it be known they really liked it. So as time passed, the menu grew. As years passed, people started watching their waist lines and cholesterol. That sparked menu changes

People passing through Asheboro often stopped at Dixie III for a bite to eat. They wanted to eat what and where the locals ate. (contributed) 26 | asheboromagazine.com

Story and Photos by Greta Lint to reflect a healthier way of cooking - grilled chicken, baked or barbequed chicken, grilled salmon and wraps. But staples like their okra stayed on the menu. Mark DG Martin's Book - A GOOD READ -- UNC-TV's Book Editor D.G. Martin explained that wrote of the popularity of the Asheboro they used flash restaurant. He cited two local lawyers, frozen okra and Alan Pugh and Ricky Cox who enjoyed added their own the meat 'n three. (Contributed) breading and fried it. "That was about a thousand times a day," laughed Kris. She said on the last day that the restaurant was open, when the okra ran out, they knew it was time to shut down the cooking line. It was always a favorite. Reflecting back on the processes the cooking staff used at Dixie III, "We probably did it the hard way," Mark said. "We made and rolled our own pastry for

the cobblers, peeled 200 pounds of onions (instead of purchasing them that way), went through 50 pounds of carrots a week and made 150 pounds of slaw a week." The high volume of food they fixed gave them a better product. Food didn't sit around long; it was used quickly. "I look back and see that we worked hard," said Kris. "But there were days when I didn't know how Mark would make it because he was working so much." So that was what it was like to operate one of the most well-known and well-liked Asheboro restaurants. "The last ten years have been a challenge," Mark said. One reason is that there has been more competition. Asheboro has never had this many restaurants. And in the past year or so, filling empty positions has been difficult. But those aren't the reasons why the Davidsons chose to retire now. It was part of the master plan. "I'm 65 and as much as I want to work, the ol' body is getting older," he said. John, his son, is not interested in taking over the place. He studied construction science at Appalachian State University. He worked with his parents for years at the restaurant and just wanted to do something else with his life. None of the other relatives are interested in taking it over; but calls from other places have been coming in. Some have been to rent the property while others have been to hire the employees. One local restaurant even brought over applications for

the Dixie III staff to complete. Don't worry - they have all found work. Now that the doors are closed, are the Davidsons looking for a long leisurely vacation? No. They haven't have time to think about it. But they have thought about their customers. They will be missed. The relationship the Davidsons had between their employees and customers and their customers and employees - built the foundation of the popularity and success of Dixie III. The closing of the restaurant leaves the Davidsons and their grandkids with one huge question - where will we eat?

Mark and Kris Davidson had a difficult time trying to find old photos of the restaurant. They were always cooking or working and didn't have time to take pictures. (Greta Lint)

AT THE YMCA

Randolph-Asheboro YMCA Community Garden

I

n spring of 2014 a group of volunteers helped transform an old t-ball field near the Splash Pad behind the Randolph-Asheboro YMCA into a vegetable garden that would soon prove to benefit YMCA members and the volunteers who helped to work on the garden. However, the mission was bigger than that, to give back to the community and share the healthy, delicious, organic produce with local charities such as Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and the Christian United Outreach Center in hopes of encouraging and educating everyone on healthy lifestyle choices. With the generosity of many local businesses and organizations along with very dedicated volunteers, the efforts have been proven invaluable to the success of the garden to benefit our community. Tending a garden, especially a large garden, takes perseverance, hard work and dedication and the healthy benefits of being involved with a vegetable garden are

by Nick McNeill, bountiful! • Exercise: It takes physical labor to make a garden grow, hitting all the major muscle groups (legs, buttocks, arms, shoulders, neck, back and abs). You build strength and burn calories when you are utilizing those major muscle groups. Stretching to reach weeds or tall branches provides an opportunity to lengthen and strengthen your muscles while increasing flexibility. Build healthier bones and joints with activities that involve resistance such as lifting bags of mulch, pushing wheelbarrows, and shoveling. • Horticulture Therapy: Spending time with family and friends and watching the beautiful miracle of nature is good medicine for the soul. In addition to stress management, there are many therapeutic benefits of peaceful garden environments. This type of therapy provides an opportunity to deal with issues, which makes this a great activity for people with post-

traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia, Alzheimer’s, depression and anxiety. This type of therapy can also be helpful with disabled children and adults. • Education: Learn about good nutrition and get excited about making healthy lifestyle choices. The possibilities are endless in what you can grow, learning about each individual plant or crop, what type of maintenance it involves, and the variety of ways in preparing the harvest to eat. • Giving Back: One of the nicest things about a garden is when you can share it with others. Thinking outside of yourself and choosing to help someone who may be less fortunate touches the mind, body and spirit. Each year since it’s beginning the garden has produced thousands of pounds of produce for the community, usually averaging over 6,000 pounds per year. The amazing volunteers put in around 1,000 hours of their time each year to make this possible. The Community Garden at the Randolph-Asheboro YMCA is just another way we are giving back and providing support to our community.
