“The class of 2017 is one colourful thread intricately woven into the tapestry, called the Ashesi community. In our vibrancy, we have stood out! Coming from various spots within the 4 corners of mother Africa, and the world, it was common place for our Ghanaian year mates to quickly correct our Nigerian year mates when they pronounced “L.O.V.E” as “lorve”; and our Kenyan friends strongly arguing against adding pepper to food to make it spicy. In the end, we got to learn to appreciate our differences and came to the realization that, all these arguments were exchanges of love.” -

From Someone Who Didn’t Graduate To be honest Ashesi sucks. Ashesi sucked the laziness out of me and replaced it with something better. The people were the worst people I had ever met. They are the worst at letting you wallow in mediocrity. A**holes everywhere. Annoying sometimes, but ultimately, they’re good for you. What can a former student, one who left the school two and a half years in, say about Ashesi? Those two and a half years were extremely formative and impactful to me. I met friends that I will keep forever and gained knowledge that will help me for the rest of my life. Most people found school stressful, but to me, being on campus was some sort of escape. The freedom and the sense of self determination I experienced at the gem of Berekuso was at that time, alien to me. The bottom line is, although I never graduated from Ashesi, I am immensely proud of what it is, what values it instilled in me and I see myself returning to Ghana to visit both the country and the school whenever I get the chance.

The Strength o

A

shesi was a dream come true for some of us. For some of us, it was the best alternative we had after our preferred US colleges gave us lower than we expected financial aid. And for some of us, we came here because Patrick had

sold the Ashesi vision to our parents so well that we could not say otherwise when they made us apply here. We came in as a diverse class, with differences that should have made us have a memorable 4 years. However, reflecting on the 4 years we have spent in this institution, it dawned on me that we do not have many memories together. I guess this is because for the most part of our time in Ashesi, we kept to ourselves and our cliques. We played it safe as a class. We were more focused on keeping up with Focus, with ensuring that the stellar academic achievements we came in with from high school were maintained. Well, we did that. Now what? What memories am I taking away? I am going to remember the sleepless nights we shared, helping one another to understand topics before a major quiz or exam. I am going to remember the capstone presentations rehearsals we did together, the class dance, Chantel’s potluck. I am going to remember the senior class party we organized after we all gave up on it happening. I will have a good laugh whenever I remember the many parties we tried to organize that went terribly wrong, the unnecessary class chatter on WhatsApp. You see, we had our days. As we leave these protected walls of Ashesi to the real world; the world with no honor code, let’s not forget that when it comes to college classmates, we are all that we’ve got. Let us not forget how happy we felt when we did things together. Let us not forget the

30

| Ashesi Yearbook

of Weak Ties successes we achieved when we came together to get something done. I dare say that if the bond was stronger among us, we could have stood up for ourselves when Patrick, after that incident, challenged and questioned our hard-earned academic achievements. I hope we all know that we are going to be fine. Some of us are from privileged families, no matter how hard we fall, there will always be cushions to support us. To those people, I say “don’t play it safe, the cushions will always be there”. The rest of us are going to be fine too. The ties between us are not as strong as family ties ought to be. However, we are tied by an institution; Ashesi. A bond, whether we like it or not has been created among us because we all studied at this institution that has this big dream of transforming Africa. We are joined by this weak tie. Nonetheless, these ties can be strong if we want it to be. Let’s not forget the strength of weak ties. Our classmates are extremely brilliant people, let’s remember that when we start our businesses. Our classmates are creative people, let’s remember that when we are organizing our weddings. Our classmates are leaders, let’s remember that when we are changing the world. Class of 2017, the world awaits to see what will we do. Let’s make something happen to this world. We are in this together, or?

About The Last

S

o forgive me if this doesn’t sound like your average, or perhaps normal, yearbook article. To be very honest, I am writing this after watching about 20 episodes of Jane the Virgin, which may perhaps make this a ‘not-so-good’ state of mind to write an article. But I thought that my journey through the episodes (no matter how short) may teach you a few useful life lessons as we exit Berekuso; the city on a hill. I have been latched unto the series because it reflected my idealistic thoughts on love, family and perhaps even modesty (at least in the beginning). However, as the series continued, I saw it portray ideas and values that were very contrary to mine. Beyond the ‘well this is just ridiculous’ thoughts I had, it made me realize something important; if I didn’t have any values at all, I would have accepted the ‘teachings’ of the American telenovela as though they were the rule because I had initially agreed with some of the ideas. I mean, if I really adore candidate A and strongly believe in two out of three of her visions, then her third vision should also rest well with me right? Totally wrong. This kind of thinking is the reason why sometimes I believe retards Ghana’s development but let’s catch up on that in another article in a different magazine or blog. My point here is, if we have gone through 4 years not knowing what we believe in, what we want or where we are headed, now will be a super swell time to at least jot something down. Not that these will be set in stone and unchangeable, but it will make our paths clearer. It will ensure that we are not swept away by every excuse of ‘truth’ we come across - not because we believe in them, but because we don’t believe in anything else. Now I know an American telenovela may be the last thing in the world we may want to take advice from as we start our very serious lives after school. However, now that we are sure of what we believe in, this will guide us in sifting the chaff from the wheat. One thing I picked up as I engaged with this unhealthy series marathon was that perhaps being weird is not weird. Rather, not being weird is weird. My point being that, it is more problematic to be same than to be different. Thankfully, maybe it has not been same for you, but there have been many times when I have panicked because things didn’t go the normal way or the way that I planned. Jane’s life in the series was everything but normal. However, every unexpected turn became somewhat beneficial to her in the long run. I, for one, can vouch for the benefits of unexpected turns. After high school, attending Ashesi was a very unexpected turn for this wanna-be Legon or Tech Law student. 52

Series Marathon

Yet it turned out to be the best turn I will probably ever take in life; making friends I couldn’t have made anywhere else, learning things I couldn’t have learnt anywhere else and getting world class opportunities that are literally not available anywhere else. Simply put, different is good. You just need to learn to draw lessons from it. Writing about my post-high school law school dreams brings me right to that moment when I decided to come to Ashesi and this is probably a good point to leave the telenovela lessons behind and tell you about at least one thing my Ashesi journey has taught me. Now to make you further understand my situation at the time, allow me to state that Computer Science had never crossed my mind as a field to explore pre-Ashesi. Come to think of it, I’m not sure I even knew that such a course even existed as a 4 year degree. At the time, my career options were between Law and Journalism. I won’t lie, it did cross my mind more than once that I didn’t have a future and that I was going to be poor. *Stop the stares lol.* I’m not the only one who thinks about the worst thing that could happen. So the first day my dad pulled up at Ashesi, was I scared? Yep! Was I confused? Yep! Was I crying deep down inside asking ‘Why me God?’ Yep! But did I let that stop me? Nope! I gave Ashesi my all and I don’t regret it. This brings me to my last piece of unsolicited advice. Never decide not to do something because you are afraid. Fear has never been and will never be a valid reason not to act. Mostly, this is how I think of it. If I had a child or perhaps a young relative telling me about an idea he or she had or an opportunity worth exploring, will I be able to comfortably say, “follow your dreams and give it your all because I did”? Double Yes!! After all it’s never so much about the idea or opportunity as it is about how much you passionately pursue it and make it work. So fear is not a no! It just might be an enabler telling you that, “if you don’t do this, posterity will never forgive you.” Toodles!

Anna.

With love,

Prince Kennedy Kwarase

President’s Award Winners

Melissa

The Scholarship, Leadership & Citizenship Award is given on an annual basis to three graduates who have lived out Ashesi’s core values during their time at the university. The award is presented by the President of the University, and students who receive the award are those who have contributed in outstanding ways to Ashesi’s mission, and have had a strong impact on the Ashesi Community. This is the highest award a student can receive at Ashesi.

Prince Kennedy Kwarase There is something special about a student who carries a journal and a pen in the front pocket every day, never missing an opportunity to learn. Very highly respected, he checks the boxes for principled, meticulous, sharp and sound in judgement. He is not your average charismatic leader but his words are rich with meaning and his actions are full of concern for his community. He is quick to stand up for what is right. He has shown exemplary leadership by serving as class representative in the 2013-2014 school year, Academic Committee for the 2014-2015 school year, and served as the chair of the Judicial Electoral Committee of the Ashesi Student Council for the 2015-2016 school year. With a passion for education, he always created opportunities to invite his peers to serve and give back to their communities. In his first year at Ashesi, he led a team of students to the Central Region of Ghana to mentor high school students living in underprivileged communities. He is a firm believer that no young person should be left behind. He founded “The Mentors Network” to connect high school students from nearby villages of Ayim and Agyemente with role models at Ashesi. He has inspired lives beyond the hills of Ashesi, and was named an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society in 2015. For so strongly representing the Ashesi ideals of Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship, we present this award to Prince Kennedy Kwarase. Melissa Akita Personable, thoughtful, well-prepared and comfortable. These were the first impressions this student created when she first walked into Ashesi, as an applicant. A proud alumnus of Aburi Girls’ High School, she may be graduating today with one of the highest academic records in 170

a Akita

Anna Serwa Addei

Ashesi’s history; but beyond the classroom, she demonstrated a sound balance between her scholastic prowess and service to her community. Her peers describe her as trustworthy and of good character. Which is why during her time as Outreach Chairperson, she was successful in leading a campaign to provide a modest facelift for the Berekuso School, bringing together staff, faculty and students from the Ashesi Community to volunteer in repainting the school’s facilities. When asked to reflect on her experiences at Ashesi, and share a few words with younger generations of students, she wrote: “Your Ashesi experience is one you will always treasure. Participate in activities, join clubs, and if you have any creative idea, go ahead, do it! Don’t wait for people’s approval before you start anything you want to do. Use your time at Ashesi to explore, make mistakes and above all remember your God.” A quiet achiever, this student will be remembered for her ability to help others achieve more and do better, without feeling the need to be in the spotlight. For so strongly representing the Ashesi ideals of Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship, we present this award to Melissa Akita. Anna Serwa Addei This student steps up in places where many others shrink. She has a knack for keeping calm and in control even when the odds are uneven. She is extremely hardworking, firm and decisive. Whenever you need help, just look outside the window and there she is, smiling, always ready to help. As a Resident Assistant, she went above her call of duties in caring for her fellow students. She inspired her peers to step up and lead change in multiple contexts around campus. As a member of the Ashesi Student Council, she served two terms as Welfare Chairperson; in this time, she led a successful campaign to ban Styrofoam packs on campus, to help cut down non-biodegradable waste and protect the environment. This student proudly represented Ashesi and Ghana at the semester at sea program where she sailed from South Africa, sharing her culture and experiences with International students. In her final year, she made an unusual decision, for a Computer Science senior, to take on an Entrepreneurship project as her capstone project; the decision meant that she took on extra work to meet graduation requirements. With recognition for multiple competitions won during her time as a student, this student will be a role model for many generations of Ashesi women. For so strongly representing the Ashesi ideals of Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship, we present this award to Anna Serwa Addei. Ashesi Yearbook

“So brace yourselves and start dreaming now ‘cos you’ve got no time! Dream wild because dreams can come true! And dreams are not a preserve of the rich or poor only. Nor are dreams for people of a particular colour, race or background. If there’s any people that should be dreaming now – in today’s world, it better be Africans. And while you do, may I or Dr. Awuah not be your standard! But rather may your dream dreams and possibilities that would confound our generations.” -

“We are not imprisoned by our circumstances. We are not imprisoned by crushing setbacks, self-inflicted mistakes or our past success. We are not imprisoned by the times in which we live, by the number of hours in a day or even the number of hours we’re granted in our very short lives. In the end, we can control only a tiny sliver of what happens to us. But even so, we are free to choose, free to become great by choice.” Excerpts from Great By Choice (by Jim Collins) -
