Recent events in Africa and around the world remind us how critically important our mission is. Now, more than ever, we see the importance of strengthening African economies.
As I have said to Ashesi graduates over the years, you are ready to confront these challenges, Class of 2022. You have learned to think critically, analytically, and coherently. You have learned to design creative solutions to difficult problems. You have held firmly to the highest standards of personal conduct, and the trust that comes with it. You have learned to be unafraid to ask questions and to deal with ambiguity. Above all, you have learned to be of service to those around you –to do some good in the world. I wish you all the best of success, and I look forward to your contributions in the years to come.

When you first enrolled at Ashesi four years ago, none of us imagined that our lives would be disrupted by a global pandemic. Your four years at Ashesi --and especially the past two years-- have held important lessons for you as you step into the next chapter of your lives. Class of 2022, I love how you describe yourselves as one of Ashesi’s finest classes. You graduate an eventful time, even as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. As part of only 10 percent of your peers who have received a post-secondary education, you will almost certainly be present in the rooms and at the tables where important decisions are made on our continent. Your thoughts, decisions, and actions will matter a great deal.
Ashesi is me, and I am Ashesi. The experiences I have gathered here have changed my life, and no matter what happens out there, I will go anywhere with my head high as an Ashesi graduate.

My most fun experience here at Ashesi was orientation week when we all first arrived. We were all looking so naive and confused. But even from that startline, Ashesi started making us work in teams. That was where I realized how different this new place I found myself was.
If you could change anything about the last four years at Ashesi, what would it be and why? I think I would have prevented the COVID-19 pandemic from happening. The community we had before the pandemic was so beautiful and unlike any community I had experienced before. But the pandemic happened and we had to break for more than a year.

I would change how I treated things in my first and second year in terms of my academics, how I put myself out there, the opportunities I took for granted and the relationships I established. When we walked past the gates of Ashesi in 2018, there were a thousand possible outcomes before us. We were young, somewhat naive, and yet determined. Ashesi was our canvas, and inexperienced as we were, we faced the herculean task of painting meaningful stories in only four years, through the thickness of a global pandemic, and against odds sometimes typical and sometimes atypical of a university experience. Yet we were resilient, and we painted spectacularly. Four years later, fate presents a new canvas — the world. We are definitely better painters now, and I hope that the new stories we paint on our fresh canvases are beautiful and timeless.
I do not think it is only a coincidence that our graduation falls on the twentieth anniversary of Ashesi's founding. I like to think that it is fate's way of assigning to our class a unique assignment, particularly to confront the inaccessibility of quality education on the continent.

It was my very first Hackathon so on the first night I made the mistake of asking "Where are the guestrooms so I can go to sleep?" to one of the organizers. If you could change anything about the last four years at Ashesi, what would it be and why? I would have decided what I wanted to get out of my Ashesi experience as early as first-year summer and worked towards maximising the returns on that, whether it were to be grades or extra-curricular activities. It would have been the most efficient way of spending my university time and energy to be honest.
All the moments pre-pandemic and post-pandemic in-person classes were fun. But Text and Meaning and Leadership Two presentations definitely took the cake when it came to interesting times.

If you could change anything about the last four years at Ashesi, what would it be and why? Probably the COVID break where we had to stay at home. Online school was a blessing and I wouldn’t change it but the access to friends was limited because we were at home. Meeting up once in a while isn’t the same as seeing people everyday. Umm I think learning in the MPR with the engineering boys (Yooku, Nat, Padi, Berko, Gerald, KB, George, Ambrose, Chief, Akorli, Romeo etc) and Traci was soooo funnn. I made some very wonderful friends that have turned it family. The nights spent learning and having fun at the MPR sustained me through second year.

My most interesting Ashesi experience was my capstone journey. It was fun and challenging to work on recycling plastic and textile waste into fitness equipment with no engineering knowledge. Through that, I've learned a lot about the environment, met new people and explored the field I've been interested in since my sophomore year.

I have lots of friends, so it's going to be hard for me. I will miss Ghana as a country; the pidgin and slang, the food, especially kenkey, the culture, and the people. I will also particularly miss the Highlanders boys.
Before the pandemic, we used to play a lot of football on the basketball court. Those nights were unforgettable. Sapara in goal, Sarpong and others for the jama and noise, and Hazzman for the fans.

Seniors week was my personal favorite. From seniors day, which included dancing, cheering, and games, to seniors lunch, which included delicious food and laughter among my friends and year mates . It was an unforgettable experience.

The ultimate “why” for every member of the class of 2022 is a little deeper and more complicated than a two-minute read will allow, but a particularly intense pair of guys would demand I Go Inside anyways. So, let's dive inside all the embedded systems that existed in the why of 22. I believe a lot of us if not all of us started off with a dream of what we could achieve, disregarding that python of doubt that attempted to snake through our minds. Ashesi pushed us long and hard to identify all those micro reasons for the macro areas of our lives, for our careers and for our relationships with the people that crossed our path. For some, these reasons were sustained through the conquering of goals, the jobs and finances earned, the growth of character or even through love – to the 4-0 recordholders, brotherly love counts as well. There are those whose why’s may have been thrust upon them or remained murky even to this day. To you, I say that even as you continue to search if, for nothing at all, you gained invaluable knowledge and experience about the world and yourself that would assist you in the journey to come. So yes...We made it. The how behind us, the why beside us and “what do you mean this is my last summer?” ahead of us. But like the mysteriously hardworking individuals, Ashesi trained us to be, I’m certain that we would figure out that final question on Wednesday 31st August 2022 at 11:59 pm.
We made it. I could write all about how we finessed our way through courses, laughed our way through our best moments or sought comforts through our worst, but at this point, the “how” doesn’t hold as much meaning as the “why”. The “why” that kept us going until this point. For some of us, the “why” was the only reason we could keep pushing. For some of us, the “why” dwindled along the way but never quite faded.
