“Think about the late nights, every dawn you woke up not in your bed but by lifting your head from a desk with papers plastered on your cheeks. Remember every early morning pop quiz; or the great amount of time you spent looking for a bug in your code, only to realize you were missing a simple semicolon. Remember the time you had to give up those 20 points in the exam room because you did everything right with the balance sheet but asset was always greater than (liability +capital). And despite all these problems, Mrs Awuah still managed to add one more: POD - the (precalculus) Problem of the Day. Yes: we too have struggled! Yet we too have prevailed. In our darkest moments, we should each remember that. We have prevailed. We are overcomers. Thumbs up.

Unsolicited Advice From a Graduand to Graduates I’ve been waiting ten weeks for graduation; since I submitted my capstone project. It’s been an interesting few weeks and I did some digging and light research on 10 Things ‘they’ never tell you before graduating, and here they are: 1.

Change your mindset. This is for people who had a lackadaisical attitude to academic work.

In the world we’re stepping into, we’re likely to have tests and group assignments weekly if not daily. It’s necessary to prepare for that mentally, especially if you want to hit the ground running and please your boss from the word ‘go’. 2.

Once you’ve done point one, don’t become a workaholic. It’s never that deep. I mean, you

need to get the work done, but allow your mind some rest, your stomach some food and your psyche some social interaction. Overkill may be necessary during an office’s peak seasons, but that won’t be a year round situation so ease up on the overachiever stunts – or you’ll die early. 3.

I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but peer pressure isn’t over. It’s been kicked up a notch,

actually. Eventually, you’ll be tempted to assess yourself based on the achievements of your mates (classmates or work colleagues). Don’t let peer pressure ‘barb’ you. Your family may have a truckload of pressure waiting for you – (especially ye firstborns) there’s no need to worry yourself, looking for more elsewhere. You need to know what you want and not be swayed by what you see around you – have a plan for your life… it does not have to be 4.

Unemployment is an actual thing. Yes, it can’t be over emphasized. Inasmuch as we have

The Ashesi Advantage, and some ‘takashie’ links, unemployment may be around the corner. I suggest that, if / when it comes, you do the following… I honestly hope it doesn’t happen because I have no advice for you, sorry. 5.

Rest is necessary. I know that on the Ashesi campus sleep is for the weak as per the night

owls of Ashesi academia. But really… that’s only a thing when you’re a student. Some students saw the light long before they finished school, though. Shout out to Shefi Nelson Wendy Amartey and the Third-Eye Security people. They knew the wisdom in devoting time for sleep. 6.

Television, TV shows (American or Korean), Movies and all other things that punctuated your

vacations will not be there for long. You will miss it. You may go about four weeks straight and 34

| Ashesi Yearbook

you’ve not even seen a TV advert, or you’ve not heard about the latest TV show. Again, this may not be your situation, I’m just putting it out there. If this happens to be your situation, though… it’s a good thing! It means you’re growing. Ha! 7.

Inasmuch as we’re growing, we need to make time for fun. Growing up doesn’t need to be

boring. Some of us don’t even need this advice, but others seriously do! Those of us who do not know how to let your hair down, I beg you, this is the time to start. It is highly necessary – figure out what you do to unwind and then do it… often. 8.

I remember being told by either the Dean’s office or the Career Services Department that

we may not get everything figured out immediately. We’re allowed to make mistakes. You can call these the informative years. They are the few years immediately after school and just before you get settled into ‘adulthood’. It may last a year for some, three years for others, or it could last 15 years! No matter how long it takes, just enjoy the informative years and the lessons they bring – they won’t last forever. 9.

Family is a big deal. Irrespective of how quirky or dysfunctional yours may be, you can’t pick

your family (even though you can pick the friends that become family). Now that we’re out of school, it’s basically work and family. That link you’re looking for or that partner you need to move your career to the next level might just be the cousin you ignored the past four years. 10. Finally, no matter how much advice you’re given, you will never be too prepared for the world out there. Typical advice for the world of work would be: ‘be assertive!’, ‘don’t let money be your motivator!’, ‘work hard!’, ‘don’t be afraid to ask questions!’, ‘networking is important!’… name it! You will have to learn on the job –learn as life comes at you. You will face situations you’ve not thought about, and you will have to make decisions no one shared prior knowledge on. Step out with an open mind, a humble heart and ready hands. Class of 2016, you’ll be missed. Have fun and spoil there. God bless you all!

Love,

An unofficial presidential address Over the past four years, there are many lessons that I picked up. As time went on, I realized how much diversity within the Ashesi community taught a myriad of valuable lessons. These lessons have informed the manner in which I choose to treat others henceforth. I would like to share these with you and I hope that these lessons will be as beneficial to you as they are to me. 1.

Give people a chance, don’t relate to people with preconceived ideas or hearsay.

With time people develop opinions and views about others and willingly share such opinions far and wide, regardless of whether or not they are true. Yet I learnt that people are more than what opinions paint them to be and as such, we need to have an open mind when relating with people. The difficulty is, our human nature leads us to judge and label others based on a single interaction (both positive and negative). I found myself in such a situation when working as the ASC President. I was hesitant to approach people who had a reputation of being ‘difficult’ but when I did, I realized that they weren’t that bad. Moving on, I have decided to give others a clean slate, when I interact with them. That way, I will get to know them for myself, rather than based on the opinions and experiences of others. You should try it. 2.

Teamwork is a beautiful thing. One thing that has definitely stuck with me about the

class of 2016 is the manner in which we support each other to ensure that everyone had an equal chance of making it through each academic year. I mean, the various instances where we had many people tutoring others. I dare say this is one of the reasons why some of us made it to the finish line. As the President of the ASC who came from the class of 2016, I appreciate the support that I got from my year group in my tenure of office. Their presence and effort in the various committees was an encouragement to me and made a success of every programme that we set out to carry out. The sacrifices of my ASC executive team members, especially those in my year group was a great boost. I watched them balance school work and extra-curricular activities and working as a team, we pulled through to the end. 3.

People matter too – Looking back, I realize that there was always one deadline or

another to meet. There was always be enough to keep me busy and rushing around. Now I understand that it is okay to stop and smell the roses. There were people around me who I love and 48

| Ashesi Yearbook

who love me but they can easily be missed in an attempt to make big headlines. I’ve learnt that even though it’s important to get work done it’s equally important to check up on a friend or invite friends over once in awhile. There will always be a lot to do so we might as well enjoy the process as we go along because there are no breaks along the way. Again, I hope these lessons will be as beneficial to you as they are to me. It’s a big world out there filled with much more than we’ve seen and experienced in Ashesi. I’m ready to take it by storm, hope you are too!

Esther.

from Olive with love Don’t you just hate goodbyes? Yes, yes I know that this isn’t goodbye for some of us, but let’s face it, there’s at least one person you might never meet face to face again...ever...( I really hope you’re not kicking yourself right now for not taking advantage of #SeizeTheBae2016) Now on to the reminiscing and mushy stuff! This has been interesting. 4 years with all of you. Wow! I know some of us had doubts that we would get here...(shoutouts to the LH218 late night squad!) We thank God for his mercies! Remember the Whatsapp group shenanigans? All the keys that were dropped, padlocks opened? Dannu and his precious gem, Apostle Meko and all the predictions? And of course our celebrities! Where else can you find MJ and Minaj mashed into one Faboulosita person?! Forgetting to mention our beloved father Maino would be my greatest offence! (Where’s a saluting emoji when you need one?) It’s been a fun ride, no doubt! Arguing with the one and only Yvette. Decorum! And who can forget Paapa’s legendary proverbs and all the quotes? And of course all the politics (Dannu...)!!! Everyday the politics! And the debates: public sector vs. Private sector, etc 62 | Ashesi Yearbook

Now this is me getting to the serious stuff... Remember all the things we think/thought/said are wrong in this world? Good. Now let’s fix them. You and me both are tired of complaining and never seeing change; let’s change things. Let’s be the ones to cause an overturn of the status quo, let’s be the ones to do things the right way, let’s be bold! The world needs us to make bold decisions. All those pre-cal Sundays and CPAs and pop-quizzes... we can’t have endured them for nothing. We didn’t shoki, alkayida and dab in front of the school just to come out and blend in with the crowd. Let’s make it so that generations to come will spend their school days remembering details of our lives for their tests and exams. Let’s do this! So many cliches in this, but I meant them all... The change really does start with us; let’s heal the world!

Benedicta Amo Bempah Describe your Transformation/Glo-Up over the last 4 years “First year orientation was a turning point for me because I leant so much and that shaped my four-year path in college. The last bit were the exit strategy sessions - picking the bitter-sweet lessons of a graduate. Ashesi supported me in making me understand my personal brand, my worth and intellectual prowess. I’m truly grateful and honored. Thank you!” What/Who will you miss the most? Sitting at almost all staff or faculty desks and my morning conversations with the cleaners/security staff at Ashesi. The friendships I established, the counsel I gained, the extra skills I developed and the level of maturity I embraced are things I just can’t fathom. I will definitely miss the People, Opportunities, and Life as a Student. :) What has your best experience in Ashesi been? My Study Abroad Experience at Macalester College in Minnesota, USA was absolutely amazing!! Everyone should go study abroad if they get the opportunity to. Don’t just rely on the school, scout for summer opportunities and others because the level of exposure you gain is mind-blowing. The network you establish, the process of understanding who you are and appreciating people with different cultures and backgrounds is beautiful. First to feature on the Ashesi Website as an alum/Succeed? Benedicta Amo Bempah Last remark. You are the only one in charge of your choices in life so make the best out of every situation:- Don’t compete, do your very best and yearn for growth always so the process is always highly important as it yields to excellent outcomes. Sam Norman Sali Describe your Transformation/Glo-Up over the last 4 years From Zero to Hundred! I entered Ashesi feeling like the Berekuso Road (You can imagine how rough and bumpy I was). By my second year, I started to feel a little more like a 2nd class road as the contractors(faculty, staff and the Liberal Art system) began to fix me up by grading away my fears and timidity. By my Junior year, I could see the street lights coming up. Confidence and critical thinking, subconsciously became the energy that powered my thoughts and actions into light bulbs, shining the hope of possibilities in the darkest of situations. As I approached my final year, work gradually came to a completion. The contractors had executed their tasks to the point of excellence. I am now smooth and finished ready to be used. Be it your average Toyota corolla, sports car or tipper truck whom in this case would be my future coworkers, Influential personalities and superiors, I am ready to offer you a smooth ride to your destination. All you need to do, is to give me a chance and I will make you experience what we call “The Ashesi Advantage”. What/Who will you miss the most? Gosh! I am so going to miss the assignments. Lol. And of course all the friends I made from the 2016 class will be deeply missed. What has your best experience in Ashesi been? Winning the Dalai Lama Fellows Award. The suspense, the surprise, the joy, the anxiety. It transformed everything for me. From my perspective on education, to my perspective on business and Agriculture. Hmm. Let’s see. “Today, you get to step out into the world, having completed most of your formal education, to begin a new chapter focused on your professional impact in the world. No doubt, this is a happy and exciting day, but if you feel anything like I did on my commencement day, you also feel a small sense of uncertainty about the vast future that awaits you. Do not be afraid. [...] The multidisciplinary education you have had here, the emphasis we’ve placed on critical analytical reasoning, and the problem solving skills you have honed here, have all prepared you for the reality of a changing world. So have courage.” -
