Marguerite Hager 1923 - 2014 Marguerite Hager, 91, of Sherman, formerly of Tallula, passed away on Saturday, July 12, at Memorial Medical Center.

Gilbert Mowry 1916 - 2014 Gilbert Mowry, 98, of Virginia and formerly of Ashland died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Walker Nursing Home in Virginia.

He was born April 6, 1916 in Pleasant Plains, the son of Walter X. and Clara Etta Gardner Mowry.

Wilma Frances Dalton Bast 1926 - 2014

Wilma Frances Dalton Bast (neé Plunkett), 88, of Cottage Grove, Minn., passed away peacefully on June 29 in Hastings, Minn., surrounded by her loving family. The family wishes to thank the wonderful people who gave such wonderful care for Wilma in her time of need at the Augustana Health Care Center of Hastings, Minn. A private, family life celebration will be held at her daughter Fran’s home in Marengo, Ill. The date to be announced.

He is survived by a son, Ronald Mowry (wife, Mary Ann) of Ashland; a daughter, Mary Louise Crouch of Jacksonville; two grandsons; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Lee Mowry, and three sisters, Emma Rust, Ethel Boner, and Mary Alice McMillan.

Gilbert farmed for over 30 years and later worked for Hagen Plumbing and Heating. He retired from the maintenance department of the Village of Ashland. He was a member of the Pleasant Plains Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held 11:00 am Tuesday at Pleasant Plains Church of Christ with burial at Pleasant Plains Cemetery. The family met friends at the church from 10:00 am Tuesday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Pleasant Plains Church of Christ. Organization Statement

Blessings in a backpack is a results-orientated program, designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program, and have little or no food on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. $80 feeds an American school child in the program for an entire 38 week school year. A passionate volunteer elects to start the Blessings in a Backpack program in a local school.

S/he fundraises to support the number of children in the program and partners with a near by grocery. Blessings in a Backpack donates the backpacks for the program, so 100% of the money raised by the program coordinator goes directly to food purchased for the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little to no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Monday ready to learn.

Blessings in a Backpack experienced explosive growth during 2012. As of September 1, 2012, we are feeding nearly 62,000 children throughout the United States and in three countries. The organization could not have achieved this milestone without our tireless volunteers, dedicated school personnel, or valued public, corporate, athletic, and celebrity sponsors. We hope that we can continue to grow into 2013 and beyond. Together, we are Feeding the Future of America, one school at a time.

At the recent passing of longtime Ashland resident, Nancy Heather, memorials were donated by friends and family to the Prairie Skies Public Library District.

Nancy was an avid reader and visited the library often. The pictured items were chosen by the family and purchased in memory of Nancy. Shown are 2 children’s bean bag chairs, an Elephant named Emerson, a cow named Chloe, and a modular lounge chair with a tablet arm for books or e-readers. Benivia Lee Forester and Patrick Allen Sapp, together with their families, are pleased to announce their upcoming marriage. Benivia is the daughter of Edward and Sammie McClellan of Jacksonville, Florida. She is a Navy Veteran, a cancer survivor and the proud mother of Imani, her daughter who is headed to Florence, Italy with Syracuse University as a first year college student.

Patrick is the son of Patty and Dean Smith of Ashland, IL and Kenneth Sapp of Jacksonville, IL. He has lived in Jacksonville, Florida since 2004 and has been employed at Availity, LLC for the past 10 years.

Benivia and Patrick will exchange their vows on Saturday, August 9, 2014 in the Historic Riverside Park in Jacksonville, Florida. They have been friends for almost 10 years and because of their friendship and commitment to love and respect one another, there couldn't be a better union.
