PLEASE HELP OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS! We are a group of cheerleaders ranging from 6th-8th grade that hope to put our small towns of Ashland and Chandlerville in the limelight of a pregame performance at the Capitol One Bowl in Orlando, Florida on New Year's Day. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and will be impossible without the support of our school, community and families. There are several ways that you can help: - Send a donation towards our efforts to the A-C Central Junior High Cheerleaders at the building in Ashland by September 30th - Allow us to place a donation bin at your business Purchase a Bergner’s Community Days booklet for $5 that gets you a $10 coupon and several other coupons from a Junior High Cheerleader or Diane Sieving Donate items for our garage sale on September 21 (A good idea is to clean out your closet of previously worn A-C Central clothing you no longer want!) Buy a $10 raffle ticket and get 31 chances to win a Thirty-One product the month of October from a Junior High Cheerleader or Diane Sieving Support our garage sale and bake sale at the Ashland City Wide garage sales on September 21st. Location of the garage sale is TBA. Please email Liz at SSSinclair@aol.com or call/text 217-414-8013 to have your garage sale donations picked up or to get a donation bin at your business. Thank you for your support! The A-C Central Junior High Cheerleading Squad
This summer the newly formed A-C Central Junior High Cheerleading squad attended a camp consisting of junior high and high school squads at Sacred Heart Griffin held by the Universal Cheerleading Association. Being new, we did not expect to achieve anymore than an award for improvement. However such was not the case! On our first day, Abigail Vandenbergh won the jump off competition in the junior high division. On our second day, we won the spirit banana in the overall division. On the third day, two of the girls, Lexi Carlock and Abigail Vandenbergh, were selected for the All American Cheerleading Squad which gives them the chance to perform at the Thanksgiving Day parade in Philadelphia if they chose. In our day to day individual evaluations we went from a red ribbon to a blue ribbon on our game day cheer and dance routine. At the final camp competition done in front of our parents and the other squads we earned the following 2 trophies. We earned a superior squad trophy for our game day cheering and a superior squad overall trophy for the junior high division. We were also honored with the Tradition Award for spirit on and off the field. With this award we are able to join other squads from around the country to perform during the pre-game show for the Capitol One Bowl held in Orlando, Florida on New Year's Day. This trip will also allow the girls and their families to go to Disney World on their down time from practice and after the performance. As their coach, I can not tell you how proud I am of these girls and all that they accomplished. Hopefully you will come to the junior high basketball games and check out what we can do! Committee of Ten Recommends Cutting A-C Central Taxes by 25% The A-C Central – PORTA Committee of Ten met Monday evening. This was the latest in a series of approximately twenty meetings and committee meetings conducted in Ashland, Chandlerville and Petersburg by the Committee of Ten since May. The principal focus of Monday’s meeting was on tax rates for a consolidated school district. If the Committee of Ten elects to put the consolidation issue before the voters, it must also set certain tax rates for the new district. The Committee of Ten voted 8-0 (two members were absent) to set rates at the levels currently existing in the PORTA school district. This represents a 25% cut in taxes for the A-C Central taxpayers. A-C Central taxpayers currently pay one of the highest tax rates in the entire state. Based on 2010 data from the State Board of Education, A-C Central’s tax rate was the 37th highest rate in the state. Among the 79 unit districts in West-Central Illinois, A-C Central had the 6th highest rate in the region. A-C Central tax rate is 5.481 per hundred dollars of assessed property value. The Committee of Ten has recommended A-C Central’s new tax rate should be reduced to 4.118. More precisely, this is a drop of 24.9%. The tax rate for PORTA taxpayers would stay frozen at its current rates. One reason why the Committee recommended such a large tax cut for A-C Central property owners is that A-C Central is taxing at a higher rate than most other schools in the region, including PORTA. Partly this is due to the small size of the district which serves 435 students. PORTA’s rates today are lower, partly owing to the larger size of the district (approximately 1050 students) and partly due to having significantly more EAV (Equalized Assessed Value) meaning more property value. The Committee of Ten felt that with consolidation it would be appropriate to drop A-C Central’s rates to more reasonable levels and that the lower rates would serve the new district well. Illinois law directs the Committee of Ten to set certain education tax rates, determine how school board members should be elected and ultimately decide whether to go forward with consolidation by putting the question before voters in both districts. The Committee is expected to settle these two important questions within the next ten days. No decision has been made whether to consolidate. If there is not sufficient support for consolidation, the Committee can simply stop and not put the issue before the voters. Should the committee believe there is support for consolidation, it could vote to put the issue on the ballot for voters to decide. Citizens with a position on consolidation should contact the Committee of Ten and express their opinions. (A-C Central consists of two communities - Ashland and Chandlerville, and territory in between. PORTA consists of five communities - Petersburg, Oakford, Rock Creek, Tallula and Atterberry.) Impact of 24.9% property tax cut. If the A-C Central and PORTA school districts consolidate at the Committee of Ten’s recommended tax rates, homeowners and other property taxpayers will see significant reductions in property taxes. Here are three examples using different home values: House 1: $150,000 = $681 Annual Tax Savings in Property Taxes House 2: $120,000 = $545 Annual Tax Savings in Property Taxes House 3: $75,000 = $341 Annual Tax Savings in Property Taxes
