The identity ISSUE
1
This is faces Faces is a new lifestyle publication intended to attract individuals who immerse themselves in fashion and lifestyle culture. It’s been created to represent the cultural generation today, relating to a range of diverse people. Our purpose is to bring a collection of contemporary photography paired with original, creative text that’s enjoyable and relatable. We want to create a community that people feel a part of. To guarantee that we stay relatable, the publication will predominantly feature everyday people, whether they’re an artist, up and coming musician or a training veterinary doctor. We want to feature the people that will read our magazine. The people that understand what we’re saying and displaying through our chosen words and photography. Issue One of Faces will offer an insightful portrayal of Identity; a topic that is engaging to everyone because everyone retains one. Identity will be explored through several different avenues, showing how and why people transform, hide and expose it, presenting themselves to the world how they want to be seen. Identity is the fact of being who a person is and the characteristics they possess, manufacturing them into the person they are. Once this word is dissected and pulled apart an abundance of different layers start to emerge. Each person has a combination of these layers, crafting their own unique and irreplaceable identity. Throughout this issue, we are going to delve into some of these fundamental layers, bringing creative imagery, featuring a variety of different diverse people with different characteristics and appearances. In this issue, there will be four different themes explored within identity, delivered through photography we feel is an accurate portrayal of them. Honesty, Falsehood, Uniformity and Individuality are all exceptionally important characteristics a person can attain; they present who a person is and how they want to be seen. Within this issue each one of these themes will be explored individually, however it’s also clear that they are all connected. Honesty and Falsehood counteract each other in the same way that uniformity and individuality do and together they all play a huge part in forming a person’s identity. Here at Faces we are going to collaborate with a selection of talented individuals to bring to you an issue that is relevant and original, exploring the four themes of identity we believe to be the utmost important. 1

Ask Why A poem by Ashleigh Ulett
Obsession with perfection, why? Filters are a creation of man. A mask. Why must people of both gender feel the desire to taint their image with something so false. What has the world created? A monster. Another monster it doesn’t need. A raw image untouched is more beautiful. Post that. Post the truth. No filter, a natural effect. Don’t conform. Resist
the norm. How are people supposed to love themselves? Express themselves. Their true self. Mass market Photoshop on a global scale. It delivers a representation of the perfect woman. A fake woman to all men and women. Get rid of her. Destroy her. The accordance of social media. The expansion. Don’t conform. Resist It’s changed how a person thinks and feels.
the norm.
We have become, social creatures. The same. All one. Dependant. These phenomena form insecurity. Insecurity leads to uniformity. Uniformity breeds lack of individuality. Think for yourself. Where has this reliance on others resonated from? Rely on yourself. Be yourself. There’s an identity crisis. Make it stop. Don’t conform. Resist
the norm.
Fashion. A fundamental part of society. An act of conformity to gain acceptance. Is it due to fear? Possibly. Take away the masquerade. Remove it. Unnecessary social control. Dishonesty is deception. Abolish the pressure to fit in. Gaze through the looking glass and be dangerous. Accept the desire to be recognised. Turn the switch off. Don’t conform. Resist
the norm.
Would friends still be friends if the cloak was removed? Who knows. Brands. The importance of them. Crucial to a person’s identity. The allegiance they hold. Are they just a camouflage? A layer used as a façade. Scared of disapproval. Don’t be. Expose the real you. Withdraw the fear and Return to solitude. Don’t conform. Resist
the norm.
