REAL CONNECTIONS

PLANT POWER In the last few years people have started to become a lot more aware of the negative affects certain food can have on the human body. The positive relationship people have between food and their body is becoming imperative, so people are trying to consume foods that are beneficial to the body, creating a healthier lifestyle. For a long time, people have thought that by going to the gym and running 10 miles it would make their body healthy, not thinking about what they were consuming massively- but this no more. Now a lot more people only want to put things in their body that they know will benefit and improve it. Through the trend real connections I will explore food and drink and what i think the future holds for the industry. The future will see the rise of people turning gluten and lactose free because of lifestyle choices, not because they have an intolerance to it. Vegetarianism, veganism, pescetarianism and flexitarianism will sky rocket as the number of people turning away from meat eating is endless. According to Wired online ‘the global adaptation of veganism could save 8.1 million lives, cutting food related emissions down by 23-70%’. Eventually people will no longer want to consume man-made foods, only wanting to eat food grown out of the ground or from trees. This could then lead to the rise of home grown fruit and vegetables as people might only want to consume foods they know are untainted. This could create a strong sense of community between many people, benefiting the human population, as they might have to start growing their produce together due to lack of space in their home or finances. The consumption of insects will also be explored in this publication as it is something that i believe will become extremely popular and common for people to eat. Countries in South-east Asia and China have already adopted the practice of edible insects and i believe western countries aren’t far behind.

WANT A LOLLIPOP? Why have a sweet lollipop when you could have a savoury one? People are turning away from unhealthy food as they’re becoming so obsessed with what they consume. The obsession and cravings people have for sweets and chocolate will start to deteriorate as beneficial food starts to take over. Sweets will no longer just be sweets, there will be healthy alternatives. A cabbage lollipop and broccoli cupcake will be the new craze.

FREE THE GREEN Fast food will always be a popular demand for people as there’s always a need to require food at a fast rate, and this won’t stop anytime soon. The world is over populated by unhealthy fast food services such as McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and Subway and they’re dominating this market due to the lack of healthier alternatives. The future will see the fast food world expand with healthy alternatives being introduced, allowing people to get food fast, to eat clean and stay lean. I predict that healthy fast food companies will start to dominate the industry because there is becoming an increase in the desire to only put food in the body that will benefit it.

BENEFICIAL SUBSTANCES The future will allow people access to restaurants and specific shops that have a completely nutritious drinks menu, containing healthy shots and cocktails. There will be shots that are specifically for your health to benefit the body massively. The future will see a huge rise in this, with places opening all over western countries embracing a healthy lifestyle. People will consume less alcohol, turning to more beneficial substances like spirulina and ginger.

EAT. GRUB. The consumption of edible insects as food, also known as ‘entomophagy’, is most commonly practised in China and other countries in southeast Asia, however, western countries might have to start developing this food trend into their lives as it has many benefits to both the environment and the human body. Consuming insects as food has huge potential to benefit globally, allowing there to be less strain on farming and conventional food production. Insects emit a lower amount of greenhouse gas than any livestock, taking up less space, feeding on waste rather than grain or corn. The global vegan population may embrace the notion of consuming insects as food considering it will curb the excessive animal breading and consumption. Insects can also provide the human body with huge amounts of protein, with just 100g of crickets containing 21g, also providing many other vitamins.

CRICKET CONSUMPTION ‘Entomophagy’, the consumption of insects, is going to grow increasingly more popular in western countries due the mass of protein certain insects obtain. Insects such as crickets contain a huge amount of protein, requiring 2000x less land than animals such as cows and emitting 100x less greenhouse gases. (criknutrition.com,2017) Due to the amount of protein crickets obtains, it makes perfect sense that they be used as a source for protein powder, offering people another alternative to whey protein. The future will see people turn to cricket protein powder, adopting an insect diet in their lives.

GET DOWN AND DIRTY Growing your own produce has long been something people like to do in their spare time. In the next few years home grown fruit and vegetables will blow up and become extremely popular due to the obsession many of the human population have with what their body consumes. Instead of just using allotments people will want to personalise it more, growing everything from their home, both outside and inside, perhaps even using everyday objects to help them.
