The Bamboo Bridge provides kampungs vulnerable to permanent flooding a framework that encourages the process of incrementally building up to form a community living above a liquid landscape. If the low-lying areas of Jakarta become permanently flooded the community will be able to continue life above a liquid landscape.

This thesis called for a more appropriate solution for residents in order to continue their lives safely in the kampung, free from the harmful effects of flooding. The Bamboo Bridge is proposed as a family of bridges extending across the floodplain of the Ciliwung River. It connects kampungs to create access and mobility, and protect residents from the limitations of urban flooding. As flooding increases, Jakarta faces the potential of pockets of low-lying urban areas permanently flooded. The city must prepare for possible life in water.

With the rise of sea-levels, rapid urban development and a lack of basic infrastructure, Jakarta, Indonesia, is one of the many Southeast Asian cities suffering the global issue of flooding. The government has begun a project to minimize flooding by dredging and channelizing 15 waterways in the city, resulting in the eviction of tens of thousands of informal settlements.

galeria de arte first year m.arch, ryerson university professor: dr. Ian MacBurnie location: siloe, cali, colombia Gang Prevalence
Each day women of all ages suffer immense violence and abuse. In Siloe, Cali, it is no different, and in most cases worse. The environment in Siloe does not allow women to be truly free and independent. Galeria de Arte will provide a safe haven for women to reach their full potential. The design creates a space where women can escape their violence, heal their wounds and learn to regain their confidence. Women are provided a safe space to create and sell crafts or products they produce. They are given a chance to earn their own income, independence and freedom from their abusers.
Illiteracy
Single Mother Households.
The design for the Gallery was driven by a desire to provide a gradual transition from exterior to interior, mirroring the process of recovery. A semi-covered market space acts as a threshold for the gallery and allows women the opportunity to sell their creations. The final destination, the gallery, has the ability to be completely closed and protected or open to the market. An interior courtyard lies inside the entrance, a space where women can have privacy and heal. Group workshop space and covered market space is also provided for times when the environment does not allow the women to sell outside. This gallery is designed to encourage the women of Siloe to take control of their lives and have a greater voice in the community. A change is needed for the violence and abuse to end.

Heal
first year m.arch, ryerson university professor: dr. Ian MacBurnie location: siloe, cali, colombia The Quilt is a continuation and of the Galeria de Arte in efforts to create a community hub for women in Siloe. Women who have been able to escape and leave their abusers do not always have a place to call home. Housing and an opportunity to become an entrepreneur is provided for these women to help them reintegrate into society as independent, strong survivors. Basic skills, financial literacy, business management and business growth strategies are offered to encourage each woman to start her own business and become financially prepared for her future. Interior space is provided for women to create their product, and a market adjacent to the housing for them to sell. It was crucial to locate The Quilt in proximity to the Galeria de Arte to form a hub for women to unify together and take control. Both are co-dependent and rely on the other to sustain life in Siloe. The form is inspired by the idea of the quilt: an exterior facade that wraps and protects the users from harm. The skin allows the interior to be completely flexible with operable partition walls controlled by the residents. The women can control the amount of visibility, air, and sunlight that enters. The circulation created encourages women to interact with each other to form the crucial social networks required for starting a small business. This network of women would create a strong bond among the community of Siloe and transform the way women are treated.

TRANSITIONARY HOUSING TRANSITIONARY HOUSING
Child-sex trafficking is a vicious cycle almost impossible to escape. Girls as young as six enter the system by force and deception and suffer rape, torture, drug addiction and even death. Escaping the brothel is difficult, but can happen. Many nonprofit organizations in India work to rescue girls from Mumbai’s oldest brothel – Kamathipura – but the number of existing rescue houses is low and unable to accommodate the number of girls in need of protection. The two most common options for girls once they escape the brothel is to return home where they are often unwelcome, or go back to the streets and risk re-entry into the world of trafficking. The girls are rarely able to return to their former lives and suffer many mental and physical disabilities. Shelter, nutrition, education, and therapy are crucial to allow these victims to move on and reintegrate into society. This proposed rehabilitation center will help give them the time and space to heal and arm them with the education and skills to succeed as independent women in their new lives.

trinity bellwoods community center second year undergraduate, ryerson university professor: baruch zone location: trinity bellwoods park, toronto, ontario The site of Trinity Bellwoods Community Center was proposed for a prominent park in Toronto, Ontario. The design of the center needed to reflect the cultural and social importance of the park to the neighbourhood and act as a beacon and key meeting place for the area residents. Focus was placed on framing vistas of the surrounding natural landscape and allowing for maximum natural daylighting.
