Constructed in 1934, the Central School in Cambridge City, Indiana was constructed to replace the previous school on the same site that was closed due to structural issues. The masonry building has sat vacant for decades until the current owner purchased with the intent of converting it into a daycare for their employees with supplemental spaces available to the community. The site and building posed challenges including accessibility, location within a flood plane, and specific daycare requirements all while pursuing the Federal Historic Tax Credits. After the completion of a building condition assessment and schematic design plans, the project was put on hold due to COVID-19 with the intent of revisiting the project in the Fall of 2020.

APPLYING HISTORIC PRESERVATION PRACTICES TO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Indiana | MSHP Thesis | Ball State Spring 2018 2018 Outstanding Thesis Award - Historic Preservation

This thesis studied the impact of historic preservation as a community development tool in rural areas. With rural communities experiencing declining populations now more than ever, the research completed suggests that preservation can be a holistic solution to this as well as other challenges that come with population loss. Justification for such an approach can be found in studies completed for urban contexts and re-framed to fit the needs of rural areas. Through this mindset, three rural Indiana communities were selected for study and comparison. Their local historic preservation ordinances, funding sources, and quality of life were evaluated based on the ability to manage change and address specific rural challenges outlined in the paper. While further research needs to be completed on historic preservation in rural areas, the thesis is able to discern a few best practices to aid these communities. Full thesis can be provided upon request.

SOHO ARTSCAPE

New York City, NY | Residential | Iowa State Spring 2014 Top 5 Finalist BWBR Competition Inspired by New York City’s artwork and parks, this mixed-use building was designed around the idea of merging dynamic art, public space, and private apartments. The inclusion of a pocket park gives a gathering space for both the residents and surrounding community. A louver system controlled by each apartment creates an animated facade, directly integrating art into the architecture.
