Revenues

Ashley Hall’s milestone Centennial was a year like no other. We opened our new, LEED Certified Rivers Library and Hoshall Science Center and broke ground on a new dining commons to facilitate family style dining and increase our focus on wellness. We announced to the public our most ambitious campaign yet, the $12 million endowment campaign, Create our Future, and hosted more than 750 guests for an evening gala to mark the opening of the school 100 years ago. We opened our archives and developed an interactive exhibit at the Charleston Visitors Center, debuted the long awaited Centennial documentary to a standing room Karen Jenkins Phillips ’79 only crowd, and the list could go on and on. Never have I seen the campus more alive with that special sisterhood that is Ashley Hall.

Through all these events, the School continued to focus on being good fiscal stewards while requesting annual gifts from each constituency to impressive success. The Loyalty Fund, Ashley Hall’s unrestricted giving program, exceeded national participatory statistics and saw an increase in unrestricted giving of almost 14% when nationally giving to independent schools was reported to be down by 5%.

As the nation and the Lowcountry continued to experience a turbulent economy, the Board of Trustees worked hard to ensure that every dollar that came in to the School, and every dollar that went out, was accounted for and beneficial to our number one priority, the students. It is inspiring to watch the mission of the school, as applicable today as it was in 1909, transform our students into independent, ethically responsible individuals who are prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. Your gifts to the school have made a tremendous impact on our girls!

This annual report is a testament to the generosity of our community and we thank everyone who made Ashley Hall a philanthropic priority in 2009-2010.

One Hundred Years Later…

Miss McBee’s Founding Vision is Still at the Forefront Miss Mary Vardrine McBee stated when she founded Ashley Hall in 1909, “My vision is to establish a school unrivaled by others in preparing young women for higher education and the world.” Through the exceptional leadership of Jill Muti, Miss McBee’s words have never rang more true, but without the support of Ashley Hall alumnae, parents, and friends this mission cannot fully be realized. The Centennial Endowment Campaign, Create our Future, has raised over $8.2 million to date. Each endowment gift becomes a lasting legacy and living testament to the Ashley Hall heritage and creates a bold footprint of the future for the Ashley Hall students of today and tomorrow. The Loyalty Fund

is the cornerstone upon which all of Ashley Hall’s

fundraising activities are built. It provides 5% of the school’s overall, annual operating budget. The Loyalty Fund, by supporting every aspect of the Ashley Hall educational experience, ensures the continual fulfillment of the School’s founding mission: to produce an EDUCATED woman who is INDEPENDENT, ETHICALLY RESPONSIBLE, and prepared to face the challenges of society with CONFIDENCE.

1909 Society The 1909 Society, Ashley Hall’s oldest giving society, honors donors who annually give $1,500 or more (unrestricted) to the Loyalty Fund. The 1909 Society, founded in 1984 to mark Ashley Hall’s 75th anniversary, is open to anyone and offers special

Ashley Hall is honored when a family or individual establishes a scholarship, award or fund that enhances the Ashley Hall experience. Whether through the recruitment of students and faculty or an award that highlights a student or faculty member’s achievements or a program that enriches the academic environment these gifts impact the entire School and enable us to offer the highest quality of college preparatory education in the southeast.

Elizabeth Brown Scholarship Given in memory of Elizabeth C. Brown ’72.

Assists with tuition throughout all grades.

Frené Haynes Award In memory of Frené Haynes ’88.

Recognizes talent in the arts, especially among members of minority populations.

Barbara Pierce Bush Scholarship In honor of Barbara Pierce Bush ’43 Awarded for academic achievement to students new to Upper School.

Baron and Dewar Holmes Enrichment Fund Established to support professional development.

Laura Carr Memorial Scholarship In honor of Laura Carr ’96 Given to a rising senior who exemplifies individuality, self-reliance, and strength of character.

The Dr. William H. Huger Trust Scholarship Given in Memory of Arthur Postell Jervey Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need, suitable scholarship, and admirable citizenship.

The Marion and Wayland H. Cato, Jr. Scholarship Awarded to a qualified student who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need.

Barbara Ann Huguenin Memorial Scholarship Awarded to a fifth grade student who lives up to her best and looks for the best in her peers.

The Kathryn L. and Wortham W. Dibble Scholarship Allows Ashley Hall to recruit a diverse population of new students with financial need.

The Lois Anderson Ganner Love of Reading Award In honor of Lois Anderson Ganner ’67.

Awards a minimum of $200 annually to a seventh or eighth grade student of good character and academic standing who demonstrates a love for reading.

Lane Family Scholarship Awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and academic achievement.

Margaret C. MacDonald Scholarship Awarded to a student who demonstrates good citizenship and academic achievement.

Dana Mobley Award for Summer Enrichment Grants In honor of Dana Mobley Provides endowed support for summer professional enrichment annually. Project proposals may range from personal development to travel to curricular work by individuals or groups at Ashley Hall.

The McBee Society honors those benefactors that have remembered Ashley Hall in their estate plans.

Caroline Pardue Scholarship Awarded to an Intermediate or Upper School student exhibiting good citizenship.

The Purple and White Scholarship Provides financial aid for academically excellent students of diverse backgrounds in grades K-12.

Laura Salmons Ragsdale Scholarship In honor of Laura Salmons Ragsdale ’74 Given to an Intermediate or Upper School student who has a special interest and talent in the arts, preferably music.

Dorothy and Jack Rhodes Family Scholarship Given to a qualified student new to independent schools during her high school years who demonstrates financial need.

The Littlest Angel Fund In memory of Sallie Huguenin Smith Shisko Awarded to a student in grade two through six who exemplifies the qualities of an Ashley Hall girl and requests financial aid.

Mary Bissell McIver Thompson Award In honor of Mary Bissell McIver Thompson ’28 Given to an Upper School student who demonstrates those ideals and principles that Miss McBee inculcated in her students.

Susan Taylor Wall Chair In History Provides annual stipends to the History Department Chair and resources to support technology and professional development.

Katherine Adele Dunn Watson Scholarship Awarded to a promising student of good character who demonstrates financial need.
