Even as universities continue to grow, most of them have been struggling with various issues which if not addressed might derail the academic growth in our higher learning institutions. Kenya as a country has invested so much in the education sector with the government ensuring that at least each of its citizens gets a chance to study in the institutions of their choice without any difficulties. The government through the ministry of education also came up with a system of helping those students who cannot afford to pay their school fees by providing them with loans which they are required to pay upon employment. This shows just how much the government has been supporting education sector. This however cannot prevent universities to encounter various challenges here and there. Most of them continue to struggle with unique challenges only known to specific institutions. There are however those challenges which apply to most of these institutions and these may include;
The big challenges facing universities in Kenya Ensuring sustainable education systems Application of knowledge is now widely acknowledged as being the source of social, economic and political power. Over the past decades, access to higher education has now expanded from being a privilege of birth or talent to a right for those with certain qualifications. However financial crisis has exposed fundamental weakness in the funding models of some of these institutions.
Improving the quality of student experience In the resent years the quality of higher education has come under scrutiny. Many view higher education as the engine that runs the economy and so the government is looking for verified and measurable evidence of benefit and impact. On the other hand students as consumers are also questioning the value for money of their study programme relative to their tuition fees that they pay. As the public continue to measure and rank the quality of education offered by these institutions, they on the other hand are really struggling to make sure that they put in place the necessary measures which will help the students get quality educational experience.

Strengthening knowledge and innovation Just like many other countries Kenya is spearheading a review of its education systems. This is geared at ensuring success in the global economy and world science. However many of these developments are leading to the prioritization of scientific and technological research over investment in the arts, humanities and the social sciences. Our country is facing various serious problems unemployment being one of the major issues. These challenges continue to impact on and change universities often in perverse ways. Most of the challenges being faced by our institutions are also faced by other institutions of higher learning across the world and for that reason they are issues which really need to be addressed. If our government and the society will come out to support and try and offer solutions to some of the issues affecting universities in Kenya then they will be able to even deliver better education system to our students.
