CONVENTION BUREAU El Convention Bureau de Interior de Castellón (CBI) es un organismo creado por la administración pública y el sector privado para, de forma cohesionada, promocionar y organizar tanto la oferta de alojamiento, como de restauración o infraestructuras existentes en el interior de la provincia de Castellón y con el fin de convertir el destino en un referente para el turismo de reuniones. Convention Bureau de Interior de Castellón (CBI) pone a disposición de los organizadores de eventos, profesionales o particulares, una amplia red de empresas y profesionales que ayudan a desarrollar un turismo interior de calidad e incentivan la participación de congresistas y acompañantes en los eventos programados, ayudando a conseguir el éxito de su celebración. Convention Bureau de Interior de Castellón (CBI) dispone de un departamento especializado y dotado con la infraestructura necesaria para que las agencias y los organizadores de reuniones (congresos, convenciones y jornadas) que programen sus eventos en los municipios del interior de la provincia de Castellón puedan obtener información, asesoramiento y soporte técnico en los siguientes campos: 1. Informar y coordinar con los organizadores la planificación y desarrollo de sus eventos, con el fin de conseguir el éxito en sus programas. 2. Facilitar información sobre los lugares de celebración de eventos, infraestructura congresística y servicios. 3. Coordinar las actividades del evento y realizar la intermediación con las Instituciones Públicas del destino. 4. Facilitar la distribución del material de promoción turística. 5. Asistir en la organización de visitas técnicas, viajes de inspección o programas de ocio y cultura para acompañantes. 6. Colaborar en la difusión de los eventos a través de la promoción.

INTERIOR de CASTELLÓN The Convention Bureau of Inland Castellón (CBI) is a body that was set up by the public authorities and private sector to work together to promote and organise the accommodation, restaurant and catering facilities or infrastructure currently available in the interior of the province of Castellón, with a view to making the area a reference for MICE or business tourism. The Convention Bureau of Inland Castellón (CBI) provides both private and professional event organisers with a broad network of companies and professionals that can help develop quality tourism in the interior and encourage conference participants and their companions to take part in the scheduled events, thereby contributing towards its overall success. The Convention Bureau of Inland Castellón (CBI) has a specialised department equipped with the necessary infrastructure to enable the agencies and organisers of meetings (conferences, conventions and workshops) scheduling their events in towns in the interior of the province of Castellón to obtain information, advice and technical support in the following areas: 1. Reporting and coordinating the planning and development of events with the organisers to ensure the success of such programmes. 2. Providing information on venues for events, conference infrastructure and services. 3. Coordinating activities during the event, and acting as mediator with Public Authorities in the region. 4. Facilitating the distribution of material to promote tourism. 5. Assisting in the organisation of technical visits, inspections, or leisure and cultural activities for the participants’ companions. 6. Taking part in promotional activities to publicise the events.

We have endeavoured to summarise the many, efficient resources our rural towns further inland have to offer, so as to help resolve any issue that might arise when scheduling trips, stays, business meetings, professional conferences or conventions. The professional handbook for organising conferences is not just an organisational diary and list of services, it also provides the visitor with a real service enabling them to get the most out of the various routes planned for sight-seeing, shopping, gastronomy and cultural activities. La guía se organiza según el siguiente esquema (1). Cada comarca y sus localidades están identificadas con un color, el cual también se emplea en el mapa para identificar las poblaciones. Los municipios están ordenados por comarcas y alfabeticamente; dentro de cada uno existe una relación de los servicios que ofrece vinculados al turismo de reuniones. En primer lugar se encontrarán los alojamientos, seguidamente los salones y por último, y al final de la comarca, los restaurantes.

CASTELLÓN Situada al este de la Península Ibérica, la provincia de Castellón es la más septentrional de la Comunitat Valenciana y la segunda provincia más montañosa de España. En ella se encuentra el Pico del Penyagolosa que, con una altura de 1.813 metros, es el techo de la Comunitat Valenciana. Con extraordinarios recursos naturales y singulares, Castellón ofrece una orografía única que conjuga a la perfección, y en pocos kilómetros de distancia, cálidas playas y agrestes calas de la Costa de Azahar con un accidentado paisaje en el interior de la provincia, que va declinando a medida que se acerca a la costa. Castellón garantiza una oferta turística de calidad con 8 parques naturales y más de 120 kilómetros de playas. Además, todo este rico patrimonio se encuentra complementado por una gastronomía excepcional, rica y variada, propia de la tierra y elaborada con productos naturales. Un aspecto muy importante de los municipios del interior de Castellón son sus fiestas, que guardan señas de identidad propias, siendo las mismas otro de sus múltiples atractivos.

Located on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Castellón is the northernmost province of the autonomous Region of Valencia and the second most mountainous in Spain. It is home to the Penyagolosa Massif, which is the highest peak in the region, rising to a height of 1,813 metres. With its extraordinary and exceptional natural resources, Castellón has a unique geography that offers a perfect combination: over just a short distance it changes from the warm beaches and rugged coves of the Costa de Azahar to the rough, uneven landscape further inland, which flattens out nearer the sea. Castellón guarantees quality tourism, with 8 natural parks and beaches stretching for over 120 kilometres (nearly 75 miles).

Becoming acquainted with inland Castellón is synonymous with discovering a region that is incredibly attractive, both on account of its rugged landscape and the idiosyncrasies of its ancient traditions and culture, making Castellón an ideal destination for an unforgettable stay. ELS PORTS Históricamente toda la comarca ha estado muy ligada a su capital y núcleo principal: la ciudad de Morella, cabeza de un vasto territorio que comprendía la práctica totalidad de esta zona. Conquistada a los musulmanes en 1232, supuso el punto de partida para la creación del Reino de Valencia. Su estratégica situación, fronteriza con Aragón y Catalunya, originó la construcción de muchas fortificaciones. Toda la comarca tuvo una gran importancia en el transcurso de las Guerras Carlistas, ya que Morella llegó a ser centro de operaciones de un general. Muchas de estas fortificaciones fueron destruidas o dañadas irreparablemente durante esta contienda, a la vez que otras fueron reconstruidas y ampliadas. La abrupta orografía de la región y el aislamiento de los núcleos de población motivaron también la existencia de un importante número de masías fortificadas, de hecho la mayor concentración de ellas en la Comunitat Valenciana; muchas apenas conservan vestigios de sus características defensivas originales, debido al abandono o a las sucesivas reformas.

Historically, the entire district is closely associated with Morella, the main town and local hub presiding over a vast territory that includes practically the whole region. The reconquest of the town from the Moors in 1232 marked the beginning of the creation of the Kingdom of Valencia. Its strategic location, bordering on Aragon and Catalonia, gave rise to the construction of many fortifications. The whole district enjoyed great importance throughout the Carlist Wars due to the fact that one of the generals made Morella his operations centre. Many of these fortifications were destroyed or damaged beyond repair during this conflict, while others were rebuilt and enlarged. The area’s rugged landscape and the remoteness of its villages also spawned a significant number of fortified farmsteads, a number of which were concentrated in what is now the Region of Valencia. Many of these have barely retained any vestige of their original defences, either because they have fallen into a state of neglect or because of successive alterations.

El municipio de Cinctorres se encuentra en la comarca de Els Ports, a 900 m. de altitud sobre el nivel del mar. El paisaje del término municipal de Cinctorres posee bellos lugares donde encontrarnos con la naturaleza, parajes de gran valor ecológico, espectaculares vistas paisajísticas, abundante fauna y diversas fuentes que invitan a pasear, descubrir y disfrutar. Se trata de destinos de agradables excursiones en las que se puede, también, admirar un buen número de ermitas. El casco urbano cuenta con casonas notables y buenos ejemplos de arquitectura religiosa. Se trata de un pueblo eminentemente agrícola y ganadero, que presume por conservar intactas las actividades artesanales que en él se realizan.

The town of Cinctorres is located in the region of Els Ports, 900 metres above sea level. The countryside around Cinctorres has some beautiful places to enjoy direct contact with nature, places of great ecological value, spectacular scenery, an abundance of wildlife and several springs that are just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed by people walking in the area. They are perfect for excursions enabling the walkers to admire a number of shrines on the way. The town itself has some interesting houses and good examples of religious architecture. It is a predominantly agricultural, cattle town, which has managed to preserve its traditional activities just as they have always been.

MORELLA El privilegiado enclave de Morella fue elegido hace muchos siglos (año 324 d.c.) para convertirse en plaza fuerte. . Encerrada entre 1562 metros de murallas, la zona antigua de Morella, declarada Conjunto de Interés Histórico-Artístico, es poseedora de un importante patrimonio monumental en el que destacan la porticada calle Blasco de Alagón, los palacios y casonas del Cardenal Ram del siglo XVI, de Ciurana del siglo XIV, de Cruilles del siglo XVI, de la Cofradía de Labradores del siglo XVII, de Piquer del siglo XVI, el Ayuntamiento de los siglos XIV-XV, la iglesia Arciprestal de los siglos XIII-XIV, etc… Todos estos monumentos se encuentran a resguardo del Castillo de Morella, edificio conservado y que actualmente permite su visita. Las vistas desde el mismo son hermosas, pues se alza en lo alto de la muela rocosa rodeada por la población a 1.070 m de altitud. La ciudad todavía conserva el urbanismo medieval con sus calles concéntricas y radiales, unos 1500 metros de muralla, 6 puertas y 14 torres. La orografía del terreno en que se enclava Morella abre la posibilidad de realizar incontables excursiones a pie por la zona y de disfrutar del tiempo libre en contacto con la naturaleza. Por otro lado, la artesanía, siempre presente en los pueblos de interior, invade la ciudad a modo de pequeñas tiendas que ofrecen al visitante una muestra de los antiguos oficios de la comarca.

The views to be had from the castle are really stunningl, thanks to its position on a rugged hilltop overlooking the town at an altitude of 1,070 metres. The town still has a medieval flavour, with its urban layout of concentric and radial streets, 1500 metres of wall, 6 gateways and 14 towers. The geography of the area surrounding Morella offers the visitor a number of hiking opportunities and other leisure activities in contact with nature. On the other hand, crafts, which have a constant presence in rural Castellón, invade the town in its small shops giving the visitor an idea of the ancient trades that were common in the area.

Se trata una pequeña población situada a 850 metros de altura con tan solo 140 habitantes. Un lugar de interés turístico gracias a su imponente castillo medieval, que data del siglo XIV, La “Casa del Diable” del siglo XVI, situada en la plaza mayor, el edifico del Ayuntamiento del siglo XVIII, etc… Su casco urbano merece especial atención por su trazado medieval completo, sin murallas pero muy bien delimitado. De forma ordenada se organizan sus calles en la ladera de la montaña, a resguardo del castillo en su parte alta, y en su falda el curso del río Cantavieja. Todolella posee también, como importante patrimonio, una de las danzas más antiguas de cuantas aún perduran en el folklore de las tierras de Castellón: las Danzas Guerreras de Todolella, que vienen celebrándose desde el siglo XV. Desde lo alto de su mola se divisan diferentes paisajes de tierras lejanas que invitan al visitante a admirar la majestuosidad del paisaje y la orografía de la Comarca de Els Ports.

Todolella is a small village located at an altitude of 850 metres and a population of just 140 inhabitants. As part of its cultural heritage, Todolella also has one of the oldest dances to have survived in the folklore of the lands of Castellón: the War Dances of Todolella, which have been performed ever since the 15th century. From the top of the hill, it is possible to make out the different scenery of distant lands inviting the visitor to admire the splendour of the landscape and topography of the district of Els Ports.

BAIX MAESTRAT Es la comarca más septentrional de la Comunitat Valenciana, formando una franja que se extiende desde la costa, con algunas de las poblaciones más hermosas del Mediterráneo valenciano, elevándose rápidamente hacia el interior en una de las zonas más altas de todo el territorio, lugares de belleza salvaje y remota. Es esta una zona abrupta, de clima húmedo, con profundos barrancos y una importante masa forestal. Su historia está determinada, en los primeros tiempos de la Reconquista, por ser dominios de las Órdenes Militares del Temple y de Montesa, que fortificaron muchos de estos lugares. Más modernamente, fue escenario de primera importancia en el desarrollo de las acciones militares durante las Guerras Carlistas. Existen referencias documentales a la existencia de otras fortalezas de cierta importancia, hoy completamente desaparecidas o con escasos restos difíciles de localizar, especialmente en la llamada ‘Tinença de Benifassà’.

This is the northernmost district of the Region of Valencia, forming a strip that extends from the coast featuring some of the most picturesque towns along this part of the Mediterranean, before rising abruptly further inland. One of the region’s highest areas, it has an abundance of wild, remote beauty spots. With its wet climate, the scenery is rugged, with deep gorges and a large area of woodland. In the early days of the Reconquest, its history was determined by the fact that it formed part of the dominions of the Military Orders of the Temple and Montesa, who fortified many of these sites. More recently, it was often the scene of military action during the Carlist Wars. There is documentary evidence to suggest the existence of other relatively important fortresses, of which no trace survives today, or else their scant remains are hard to find, particularly in the area known as ‘Tinença de Benifassà’.

Estas tierras se encuentran a importantes cotas de altitud, lo que junto con otros factores ambientales, hacen que posean un microclima especial en el que se desarrollan determinadas especies vegetales que conforman un paisaje agreste y espectacular en el que conviven con especies animales muy características. Con estas premisas la Tinença de Benifassà es un maravilloso lugar para practicar senderismo a lo largo de la extensa red de senderos homologados existentes y así entrar en contacto con una naturaleza casi intacta descubriendo parajes tan singulares como el Barranco de la Tenalla o el Portell del Infern, etc. Pero además de parajes naturales de interés La Pobla de Benifassà cuenta con un importante legado histórico que tratan de mantener en sus ermitas, iglesias y casas de rica arquitectura popular, como se han mantenido las huellas de los antiguos pobladores de estas tierras donde se conservan interesantes pinturas rupestres en las que contemplar escenas de caza y pesca. El Real Monasterio Cisterciense de Santa María de Benifassà es la verdadera joya artística de la zona. El monasterio se encontraba bastante destruido tras las Guerras Carlistas del siglo XIX y ha sido minuciosamente reconstruido recientemente volviendo de esta forma a su pasado esplendor la iglesia gótica, claustro, torres, etc. En la actualidad es posible visitarlo sólo los jueves de las 13 a las 15 horas.

These lands are located at high altitude, which, together with a number of other environmental factors, means that the town has a special microclimate favouring the cultivation of specific crops producing spectacular, wild scenery that is shared with a number of animal species that are characteristic of the area. Viewed from this perspective, Tinença de Benifassà is a wonderful place for hiking along the extensive network of currently approved trails and contact with a natural environment that is virtually intact, discovering such extraordinary places as the Barranco de la Tenalla or the Portell del Infern, (Gateway to Hell). However, apart from its natural attractions, Pobla de Benifassà also has a significant historical legacy which it endeavours to maintain in its chapels, churches and houses displaying a rich variety of popular architecture, just as the tracks of its ancient settlers have been maintained through the conservation of interesting rock paintings depicting hunting and fishing scenes. The Royal Cistercian Monastery of Santa María de Benifassà is the real artistic jewel in the area’s crown. The monastery was in quite an advanced state of ruin after the Carlist Wars of the 19th century. Recently, however, it has been painstakingly reconstructed, thereby returning the Gothic church, cloisters, towers, etc to their former glory. Currently, it is only open to the public on Thursdays from 1 to 3 pm.

Ever-present craftwork is closely associated with the town, hence the existence of a Traditional Craft Exhibition, with craftsmen and women from all over Spain demonstrate their craft right in front of the visitors. Less than a kilometre from the town centre is the so-called “Bovalar de Sant Jordi”, a natural setting with a large surface area perfect for unwinding, going for a walk, relaxation or contemplation. At present, they are creating a Sculpture Park in the area that will follow different routes around the site. Su casco antiguo, declarado Conjunto de Interés Histórico – Artístico, ofrece al visitante monumentos, edificios muy bien conservados y museos, entre los que se encuentra el Museo de les Presons o el Museo Histórico. El municipio conserva edificios civiles muy interesantes de los siglos XIII y XVI, con fachadas de piedra, ventanales góticos y renacentistas, puertas adoveladas y arcos apuntados y escarzanos en los interiores de las mismas. En el siglo XIV, época esplendorosa para Sant Mateu, se convirtió en un importante centro exportador de lana a los telares de Florencia y su región. A 2,5 Km. de Sant Mateu, se encuentra la Santuario de la Mare de Déu dels Àngels, del siglo XVI, donde, por su altitud, se goza de una inmejorable vista panorámica del término. Sant Mateu dispone de varios senderos señalizados en el término municipal que en parte discurren por vías de tradición histórica, como son los Senderos de Pequeño Recorrido (PR) 201, 202, 214 y la Vía Augusta y los “assegadors”.

Sant Mateu, the historical and political capital of the Maestrazgo, is located on a plain in the centre of the region. Its historic quarter, officially declared to be a conservation area of special architecturaland historic interest, offers the visitor the chance to see some monuments and buildings that have been well preserved, along with four museums, including the Prison Museum and the History Museum. The town also maintains some very interesting examples of civilian architecture dating back to the 13th and 16th centuries, with stone walls, Gothic and Renaissance windows, and voussoired doors with segmental lancet arches inside. In the 14th century - a splendid time for Sant Mateu – the town became an important centre for exporting wool to the looms of Florence and the surrounding area.At a distance of 2.5 Km from Sant Mateu is the 16th century sanctuary of Mare de Déu dels Àngels, perched on high, offering superb views of the whole region. Original de Traiguera es una larga tradición alfarera que llegó a tener más de 35 hornos, siendo los cántaros y botijos su producto más universal. De ahí que posean un interesante museo que custodia importantes obras de orfebrería de los siglos XIV y XV. Se trata de una villa amurallada, frecuente en el interior de la provincia de Castellón. El municipio está rodeado de naturaleza, otorgándole así una belleza paisajista en la que tienen cabida fuentes, olivos milenarios y cultivos más recientes como los cítricos.

Being located close to the Via Augusta, Traiguera has always been inhabited since ancient times as can be seen from the medieval remains of the walls, streets and squares and its symbolic, historical monuments. The most emblematic in this town are the Real Santuario de la Font de la Salut (the Royal Sanctuary of the Fountain of Health), the Town Hall, the fountain of Sant Vicent and the parish church. Traiguera has a long pottery tradition, at one time having over 55 kilns, with water jugs and pitchers being their most universal product. Hence there is also an interesting museum with important gold and silverware dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Traiguera is a small fortified town - a common feature in the interior of the province of Castellón. The town is surrounded by nature, affording it real scenic beauty with its waterfalls and ancient olive groves, along with more recent crops like citrus fruits.

En su término se conservan restos de un importante poblado de la Edad del Bronce, la célebre Mola Murada, con recinto fortificado y restos de habitaciones en su interior. Es una fortaleza natural, rodeada de escarpes.

Outside the main centre, the Ermitorio de Sant Pere y Sant Marc, a shrine located in an area of rugged, mountain terrain, is worth a visit. It has an interesting plantation of ancient olive groves, which has survived thanks to the long tradition of producing olive oil in the region. The ruins of an important settlement known as the Mola Murada, dating back to the Bronze Age, still survive in the area, with the fortified wall and vestiges of remains still visible inside. This is a natural fortress, surrounded by cragged rocks and precipices.

ALT MAESTRAT Región con fuertes desniveles y profundos barrancos, está ubicada en la parte central y occidental de la provincia de Castellón, en una zona abrupta y remota, incluso en la actualidad, y que por ello sigue guardando un encanto especial. Parece que sus tierras ya fueron pobladas por los romanos. Más tarde serían ocupadas por los árabes y durante la Reconquista fueron motivo de disputa entre aragoneses y catalanes. A finales del siglo XIII la Orden del Temple llegó a dominar en su totalidad la comarca y sus fortalezas. A su disolución en 1313 pasarían a la Orden de Montesa, creada en la Corona de Aragón para acoger a los hombres templarios y a sus bienes. Las características de esta región resultan propicias para atesorar la gran riqueza cultural de sus castillos, torres y fortalezas, en muchos casos legendarios.

Albocàsser · Torre d’en Besora

A region with steep slopes and deep ravines, in the central and western part of the province of Castellón. Even today this is a remote, rugged area, conserving much of its special charm. These lands seem to have been settled by the Romans. They were subsequently occupied by the Arabs and often the subject of dispute between the peoples of Aragon and Catalonia during the Reconquest. At the end of the 13th century the Order of the Temple came to dominate the district and its fortresses in its entirety. When the Order was dissolved in 1313, these became the property of the Order of Montesa, created by the Crown of Aragon for the benefit of the knights templar and their assets. The physical features of this region were conducive to harbouring the rich cultural heritage of its castles, towers and fortresses, which in many cases are legendary.

ALBOCÀSSER Rodeada de almendros y olivos y salpicada de arte rupestre, la villa de Albocasser posee la virtud de ser la pradera Santa. Surrounded by almond and olive trees, along with various samples of rock art, the town of Albocàsser has the virtue of forming part of the countryside. Albocàsser, capital de la comarca del Alt Maestrat dista, tan solo, 45 km. de distancia del mar Mediterráneo. El casco urbano de este municipio se sitúa en la ladera de una colina en cuya cima se encuentra la plaza. A unos 3 Km del núcleo de población, se encuentra la Ermita Hospedería de Sant Pau, declarado Monumento Histórico-Artístico Nacional. Se trata de un importante centro religioso de los siglos XV a XVII, compuesto por diversas salas de reuniones y una zona de exposiciones amplia y restaurada, una gigantesca hiedra en el arco de acceso a la plaza del Ermitorio constituye un monumento natural único en la provincia de Castellón. El municipio se encuentra rodeado de almendros y olivos, en un dominio de corredores y montañas que ponen en contacto las tierras altas del Bajo Aragón y Els Ports de Morella. Albocàsser fue feudo templario, conserva muchos lugares con inequívocas señales de lugares mágicos, santuarios prehistóricos que seducen a las personas que desean conocer sus orígenes o hacer un turismo de naturaleza, ocio y cultura.

Albocàsser, capital of the Alt Maestrat region, is only 45 kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea. The town itself nestles on the side of a hill, with its main square perched right at the top. 3 Km from the town centre is the Ermita Hospedería de Sant Pau, an inn declared to be a national monument of architecturaland historic interest. This is an important religious centre from the 15th to 17th centuries, containing several meeting rooms and a large restored exhibition area. A giant ivy clinging to the archway at the entrance to the main courtyard of the inn is a natural monument that is unique in the province in Castellón. The town is surrounded by almond and olive trees, in an area dominated by mountains and ravines linking up the highlands of Bajo Aragón with ‘Els Ports’ and the town of Morella. Albocàsser formed part of the feudal lands of the knights templar, and still conserves many places with the unmistakable traces of magical sites, prehistoric sanctuaries that seduce people that wish to find out about their origins, or indulge in culture, leisure and nature tourism.

En un cruce de carreteras se sitúa esta pequeña población feudataria del castillo de Culla que conserva restos de la muralla que envolvía sus calles. La iglesia de San Bartolomé (s.XVIII) es su monumento más importante. En su término municipal destacan los alrededores de la antigua mina Esperanza la cual se está acondicionando para visitas turísticas y donde encontramos un área recreativa. Torre d’En Besora pertenece a la comarca del Alto Maestrazgo, su término municipal se encuentra situado en la zona central de la comarca, prácticamente envuelta por el término de Culla.

Located at a crossroads, this small town forms part of the feudal lands of Culla Castle, and still retains the ruins of the wall that used to enclose its streets. The 18th century church of San Bartolomé is its most significant monument. Still within the municipal district, near a recreation park, are the installations of the old Esperanza mine, which is being refurbished as a tourist site. Torre d’En Besora belongs to the district of Alt Maestrat. The town is located in the middle of the district, almost completely surrounded by the boundaries of Culla.

There is a terrace with external views and garden furniture. In spring and summer guests will have full use of the garden, where potatoes, tomatoes, lettuces, onions, etc are grown.

ALCALATEN La Comarca de L’Alcalatén marca la separación entre las elevadas tierras del Maestrazgo y Els Ports de Morella hacia los cursos altos del río Mijares y del Palancia. Es una región abrupta con fuertes desniveles, destacando la cumbre del Penyagolosa (1.814 metros), se trata del pico más elevado de la Comunitat Valenciana, que con su imponente mole domina todos los horizontes de esta región. La principal cuenca fluvial que recorre la zona es la del río Lucena. L’Alcalatén es el marco ideal para todas las imágenes que relacionamos con los castillos: tierras montañosas, legendarias, repletas de historias y leyendas. Sus construcciones militares son parte del paisaje mismo, con rincones de gran belleza que recuerdan el esplendor demográfico y la importancia política que tuvieron en el pasado.

Vistabella

The district of Alcalatén marks the boundary between the highlands of the Maestrazgo and Els Ports de Morella near the upper water courses of the Mijares and Palancia rivers. The scenery in this region is abrupt with steep slopes, crowned by the summit of the Penyagolosa Massif (1,814 metres), the highest peak in the Region of Valencia, which soars above the horizon making it visible for miles around. The area also features the main river basin of the River Lucena. Alcalatén is the ideal setting for all the images we associate with castles: mythical, mountainous terrain, brimming with stories and legends. Its military fortifications form an integral part of the landscape, of great scenic beauty recalling the demographic splendour and political importance enjoyed by these places in bygone times.

VISTABELLA Vistabella, población llena de numerosos y bellos rincones en los que disfrutar y aprender más de su historia, su fauna y su flora. Vistabella, a town full of many beautiful places where you can enjoy yourself and learn more about its history, flora and fauna. Vistabella se halla situada en la parte centro-oeste de la provincia de Castellón. La población, en una ladera de suave pendiente, posee recinto medieval del que conserva dos portales. Numerosos parajes de interés patrimonial y paisajístico (Penyagolosa, ermitorio de Sant Joan, el Pla, el Quiño, río Montlleó, etc.) y fuentes como de “Dalt”, Alforí, Pegunta, Cambreta, etc. harán las delicias de los excursionistas. La población, de estructura claramente medieval, todavía conserva hoy en día restos de su castillo, así como algunas fachadas nobles de piedra y casas de salientes aleros en su casco antiguo. Los alrededores de Vistabella tienen un atractivo singular, con muchos puntos sobresalientes de observación y gran belleza, entre los que se encuentran el Pico del Penyagolosa. Los amantes del turismo activo podrán realizar actividades de senderismo, de escalada en las paredes de la cara sur del Peñagolosa o para practicar la bicicleta de montaña. En las inmediaciones del ermitorio de Sant Joan se ha instalado un observatorio astronómico que permite observar la majestuosidad del cielo estrellado en una noche clara. La recolección de la trufa o setas, entre otras muchas actividades, son otras de las actividades que Vistabella invita a practicar en su excepcional entorno natural.

Vistabella is located in the central western area of the province of Castellón. Nestling on the rolling hillside, it has a medieval precinct where two gateways can still be seen standing. There are plenty of interesting monuments and natural beauty spots to see: Penyagolosa, the Chapel of Sant Joan, the Plain, Quiño, the River Montlleó, etc. and fountains like the “Dalt”, Alforí, Pegunta, Cambreta, etc. are a hiker’s paradise. The town, which is clearly medieval in layout, still preserves the ruins of its castle, along with some of the noble stone façades and houses with their overhanging eaves in its historic centre. The surrounding area is really attractive, with many excellent vantage points and beauty spots, including the summit of Penyagolosa. For fans of active tourism there are opportunities to go hiking and trekking, rock-climbing on the southern face of Penyagolosa, or mountain-biking. Near the Chapel of Sant Joan an observatory has been set up from which the grandeur of the constellations can be observed in the clear night sky. Amongst other pursuits, gathering truffles and mushrooms are some of the other activities Vistabella has to offer in the incomparable setting of its natural countryside.

MIJARES Se encuentra en el interior de la provincia de Castelló, al oeste de la misma, y el río Mijares la atraviesa de oeste a sureste, con el río Villahermosa como principal afluente. Es una región abrupta, poco conocida y con una naturaleza desbordante con sus elevadas montañas, profundos tajos del río y estrechos valles. Aunque albergó asentamientos íberos y romanos, su mayor presencia histórica se desarrolla en la última parte de la dominación musulmana, cuando el emir Abú Zayd, último gobernador almohade de Valencia, eligió estas tierras para residir tras perder el dominio de la capital y verse obligado a pactar con el rey Jaime I. Este hecho marcará la historia de este período para la comarca.

This area is in the interior western region of the province of Castellón, with the River Mijares entering from the west and flowing across the province in a south-easterly direction, along with the River Villahermosa, its main tributary. It is a largely unknown land of rugged scenery, with an exuberance of natural features in the form of high mountains, deep river gorges and narrow gullies. Although the Iberians and Romans settled in the area, the most important period of its history was the latter stage of Muslim rule, when Emir Abu Zayd, the last Almohad governor of Valencia, chose to dwell in these lands after losing control of the capital and being forced to enter into a pact with King James I. This fact was to become the defining feature of the history of this period for the whole district.

AYÓDAR Destaca por el interés de los recursos naturales, se trata de un lugar idóneo para el senderismo, la bicicleta de montaña y para los baños en las aguas transparentes del río. Ayódar stands out on account of its natural resources, and is ideal for activities such as hiking and mountain biking, and bathing in the limpid waters of the river. El municipio de Ayódar se encuentra enclavado dentro de los límites del Parque natural de la Sierra de Espadán, el municipio separa la Sierra del río Mijares. El término municipal es muy montañoso y se halla situado en la ladera de la Peña Saganta. A poca distancia de la población se conserva una torre que pertenecía al antiguo castillo árabe, otra torre, la del destruido convento de los dominicos, preside la población que en su término municipal también cuenta con una importante masa forestal salpicada de fuentes con apreciadas aguas. En el río Chico que transcurre a los pies de la población se ha habilitado una piscina natural para disfrute en los meses veraniegos.

The municipality of Ayódar nestles in the confines of the Sierra de Espadán nature reserve, separating the mountain range from the River Mijares. The municipality of Ayódar is very mountainous, located in the foothills of Peña Saganta. Just a short distance from the town is a tower that used to belong to the ancient Arab castle, and another tower, from the now demolished Dominican convent, presides over the town, which also has an important area of woodland, on its outskirts, dotted with natural springs that are held in great esteem. “La Curriola” es una antigua casa de agricultores que data de mediados del siglo XIX. La casa restaurada se ha transformado en un alojamiento rural que permite disfrutar del descanso y del contacto con la naturaleza. En su rehabilitación se ha respetado al máximo la estructura, los materiales y elementos originales de la construcción tradicional: viguería de madera, muros de piedra, decoración cerámica valenciana; ofreciendo al visitante unas estancias cálidas y agradables.

“La Curriola” is an old farmhouse dating back to the middle of the 19th century. The house has been renovated and turned into a rural dwelling enabling its guests to unwind and enjoy contact with nature. The building has been renovated with total respect for the original structure and traditional building materials and components: wooden beams, stone walls, decoration using local Valencian ceramic tiles, offering the guest a warm and pleasant stay.

CIRAT El río Mijares cruza el término de la hermosa Cirat dejando a su paso perfectos meandros y paisajes de gran belleza. The River Mijares flows through the lovely Cirat countryside, leaving perfect meanders in its wake, along with some really beautiful scenery. El término municipal de Cirat pertenece a la comarca del Alto Mijares, se encuentra cubierto por una importante masa forestal compuesta fundamentalmente por pinares. La superficie del término es muy quebrada, estando la villa edificada entre montañas, en el margen derecho del río Mijares. Se encuentra a tan solo 50 kilómetros de la capital de la provincia. Parajes naturales numerosas fuentes con aguas de propiedades curativas para la piel son metas de interesantes paseos por el monte. Cerca de la población se encuentran las ruinas del castillo de Cirat y en el casco urbano la Torre del Conde de Cirat, el Palacio de los Condes de Cira. El interesante Museo Etnológico sirve de complemento al atractivo casco urbano.

Cirat belongs to the Alto Mijares region and is covered by dense woodland consisting mainly of pine trees. The town, of rough, uneven terrain, was erected high in the mountains on the right bank of the River Mijares. It is only 50 kilometres from the capital of the province. Numerous natural beauty spots with waters with medicinal properties for treating the skin are some attractive destinations for hiking through the mountains. Near the town we can visit the ruins of Cirat Castle and, inside the town itself, the tower and palace of the Condes de Cirat. An interesting Ethnological Museum is another place that deserves a visit in this quaint old town.

Estas fuentes tienen excelentes aguas y muchas de ellas son conocidas por sus propiedades minero medicinales, siendo la más famosa la de los Baños, que vierte sus aguas al río Mijares. Pero las tierras de Montanejos, además, están salpicadas de lugares donde, tras agradables paseos, podemos recrearnos con espléndidas vistas, disfrutar de la naturaleza haciendo deportes de aventura o disfrutar de la tradición y cultura de sus gentes.

The fame of this tourist destination comes from its spectacular scenery between the gorges of the River Mijares and the Maimona ravine, often frequented by climbers to practise their sport. The mountains alternate with deep, narrow gullies and gorges, which over time have formed a large number of ravines and rivers rising from the many springs to be found in the area. These springs have excellent water and many of them are known for their mineral and medicinal properties, the most famous being Baños, which empties its waters into the River Mijares. However, the lands around Montanejos are also dotted with places where we can take a pleasant stroll to admire the wonderful views, or we can enjoy nature by taking part in adventure sports, or marvel at the culture and traditions of the local people.

La villa está situada en las faldas de la muela, con empinadas y tranquilas calles blancas. La bella iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Natividad (s. XVIII) posee en su interior unos magníficos retablos góticos y renacentistas de los siglos XIV y XV. Es un punto de partida de numerosos caminos, sendas y pistas que aprovechan las brechas para adentrarse en las sierras, configurando una perfecta red de senderos naturales.

PALANCIA Son tierras de gran belleza, con frondosa vegetación, estructuradas alrededor del curso del río Palancia y la Sierra de Espadán. Hasta principios del siglo XVIII perteneció a la gobernación de la provincia de Valencia, para pasar posteriormente a la demarcación de la de Castellón. Al igual que el Alto Mijares, su devenir histórico, tras la dominación musulmana, se halla ligado a la figura de Abú Zayd, último gobernador almohade de Valencia. Aunque no es una región de grandes fortalezas, por no ser fronteriza ni destacar estratégicamente, en ella se encuentran algunas muestras importantes de la arquitectura militar valenciana, bien por su particular estructura o por sus bellos y majestuosos emplazamientos.

This is an area of great beauty, with lush vegetation, structured around the River Palancia and the Sierra de Espadán. Until the beginning of the 18th century it was governed by the province of Valencia, before the boundaries were redrawn and it became part of the province of Castellón. Like the region of Alto Mijares, after Muslim rule, the historical fate of Alto Palanca was tied to the figure of Abu Zayd, the last Almohad governor of Valencia. Although the area does not have an abundance of fortresses, since it does not form a boundary or have any strategic importance, it is home to some key examples of military architecture typical of Valencia, either because of their peculiar structure or their beautiful, imposing sites.

Many natural springs and beauty spots are perfect places for rambling and spending the day out in the countryside. The beautiful surroundings are ideal for sports and hiking activities, and near the River Palancia, there are places to relax and unwind in contact with nature. It is well worth stopping off in Jérica to get to know the local fare or the town’s fiestas, which take place throughout the year.

Lying halfway between the highlands of Aragon and the Valencian coast is the noble, loyal and heroic town of Segorbe, pounding with life in the middle of the Palancia river valley that threads its way between the two mountain ranges of Espadán and Calderona. Segorbe enjoys a privileged position on top of a hill, enabling it to control the natural route between the Mediterranean coast and Aragon. PLANA BAIXA La Comarca de la Plana Baixa, en su conjunto la más meridional de la provincia de Castellón. Geográficamente presenta dos áreas claramente diferenciadas: la llanura litoral con la costa de playa y los fértiles campos de naranjos y la zona montañosa occidental que forma parte de la Sierra de Espadán, cuyas últimas estribaciones llegan hasta el llano. Esta disparidad se muestra también en sus fortificaciones: torres de vigilancia para prevenir los ataques berberiscos en la costa; ciudades amuralladas en el llano y los castillos roqueros en los puntos estratégicos de las montañas. La comarca ha estado habitada desde la Prehistoria. Son significativos los yacimientos de la Edad de Bronce y diversos poblados fortificados íberos de importancia. La romanización fue también muy intensa, tanto más cuanto nos aproximamos a la vecina ‘Saguntum’, bajo cuya influencia se hallaba buena parte de su zona más meridional.

The district of Plana Baixa largely occupies the southernmost section of the province of Castellón. It consists of two geographical areas that are markedly different: the coastal plain with its beaches and fertile groves of orange trees, and the mountainous region to the west forming part of the Sierra de Espadán, with its foothills stretching down to the plain. This disparity can also be seen in its fortifications: watchtowers to warn of attacks by the Berbers along the coast; walled towns and cities on the plain; and castles perched on the rocks at strategic points in the mountains. The region has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with important remains that have survived from the Bronze Age and several important fortified Iberian settlements. Romanisation was also very intense in this region, particularly in the area around the neighbouring ‘Saguntum’, which exerted influence over much of the area further to the south.

Rodeado de una imponente masa vegetal, Aín se halla situado en pleno Parque Natural de la Sierra Espadán, por lo que lo hace un lugar ideal para practicar actividades de montaña y disfrutar de la naturaleza. La geografía de Aín es intrincada, con numerosos barrancos y montañas entre las que destaca el pico Espadán con 1.099 m. de altura. Numerosos bosques de alcornoques se entremezclan con los cultivos de almendros, de olivos y de cerezos y las fuentes configurando un ameno paisaje que se puede recorrer siguiendo diversos senderos. El pequeño municipio es lugar de veraneo y posee las típicas calles de los pueblos de la sierra. Del castillo de Aín, actualmente en ruinas, destaca la torre del homenaje, se trataba de una torre circular que debió formar parte del sistema de vigía y defensa del castillo.

Surrounded by its imposing flora, Aín is located right in the heart of Sierra Espadán nature reserve, making it an ideal spot to practise mountain activities and enjoy nature. The geography of Aín is intricate, with an abundance of ravines and mountains, and the Espadán soaring high above the the other peaks to an altitude of 1,099 metres. Dense areas of cork trees mingle with groves of almonds, olives and cherry trees, and natural springs, forming a pleasant landscape that can be traversed by means of a number of different tracks and trails. The small town is a summer resort with the typical streets of a mountain village. Of the castle at Aín, which is now in ruins, attention is drawn to the round tower that must have formed part of the castle’s observation and defence system.

ESLIDA Lugar de singular paisaje bañado por fuentes y decorado con abundantes barrancos. An exceptional landscape, dotted with springs and a backdrop of ravines and gorges.

La ubicación del municipio sobre la ladera de una montaña, hacen de él un lugar singular, donde la circulación de vehículos es compleja por la estrechez de sus calles y lo empinado de su calzada. Un singular paisaje con una importante riqueza forestal y abundancia de barrancos y de fuentes, muy apreciadas por la riqueza de sus aguas, hacen que Eslida sea un lugar muy apreciado por los veraneantes. El casco urbano de Eslida rodeado de alcornocales y cultivos de almendros guarda todavía el sabor árabe en sus murallas y sus estrechas calles. En las afueras del casco urbano se encuentra l’Arc de la Rambla, un acueducto sobre el río Anna, con varios arcos de medio punto. La localidad es atravesada por varios senderos, entre ellos el GR36 o los PR-V137 y PR-V138 que discurren hasta Artana y Chóvar, respectivamente.

The location of the town on the side of a mountain makes it an exceptional place, where driving a car through its steep, narrow streets is a complicated business. An exceptional landscape with an important woodland area and an abundance of narrow gorges and springs that are highly valued for the properties of their waters make Eslida the perfect place for summer visitors. The centre of Eslida, surrounded by cork trees and almond groves, still has an Arab flavour in its walls and narrow streets. In the outskirts is the Arc de la Rambla, an aqueduct over the River Anna, with several semicircular arches. The town is crossed by several trails, including the GR-36, or the PR-V137 and the PR-V138, which continue on to Artana and Chóvar respectively.

El término municipal de Onda es uno de los más grandes de la provincia. Situado en la zona intermedia entre la ”Sierra de Espadán y la llanura de La Plana, se extiende hasta el mar Mediterráneo. Esta situación le convierte en un punto estratégico natural de entrada a la Sierra de Espadán desde la costa, lo que ha condicionado su historia y ayuda a entender la importancia que en su día tuvo su castillo. El Castillo de Onda, declarado Bien de Interés cultural, se sitúa en la cima del Montí , desde donde contempla el término en toda su extensión. Paseando por las estrechas y angostas calles de su casco antiguo (declarado conjunto histórico-artístico), podemos observar el fiel reflejo del urbanismo musulmán y de la adaptación a la orografía de la montaña. La ciudad medieval, cuya fisonomía recuerda a una media luna, estuvo amurallada y jalonada por diversas puertas. Las calles arrancan y desembocan en plazuelas irregulares e inclinadas. Una de las principales actividades económicas de Onda es la industria del sector cerámico: la fabricación de azulejos y pavimentos, que son exportados a todo el mundo.La evolución del sector cerámico la podemos observar en el Museo de Cerámica de Onda, que conserva más de 8.000 piezas correspondientes a épocas históricas que llegan, prácticamente, hasta la actualidad.

The municipality of Onda is one of the largest in the province. Lying between the mountain range of Sierra de Espadán and the plains of La Plana, the town extends down to the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. This location makes it a natural strategic point, and gateway to the Sierra de Espadán from the coast, with this factor determining its history and helping to explain the importance enjoyed at one time by the town castle. Onda Castle, declared to be a conservation area of cultural interest, sits atop the Montí, from which it commands a view of the whole region. Strolling through the narrow little streets in the old part of town (declared to be a conservation area of special architectural or historic interest), we can see that it is a true reflection of Muslim urban development adapted to the topography of the mountains. The Medieval town, which is laid out roughly in the shape of a crescent moon, was at one time surrounded by walls interspersed with several gates. The streets begin and end in irregular, sloping squares. One of the main economic activities in Onda is the ceramics industry: the manufacture of floor and wall tiles, which are exported all over the world. One can get an idea of how this sector developed in the Ceramics Museum in Onda, which holds over 8,000 pieces ranging from historic periods of the past virtually right up to the present day.

En su término municipal destaca el castillo, inexpugnable fortaleza se ubica a 582 metros de altura en pleno Parque Natural de la Sierra de Espadán. Abundantes manantiales se reparten por el término de Sueras, aunque es el Barranco de Castro donde se concentra el mayor número de manantiales. En Sueras también podemos visitar los restos de un antiguo poblado de origen medieval que conservan buena parte de sus estructuras, casa, molinos y calles.

PLANA ALTA

Es una de las dos Comarcas en que tradicionalmente se divide la Plana de Castellón. Existe constancia de asentamientos humanos en esta zona desde el Eneolítico, encontrándose importantes yacimientos. También tuvo especial incidencia la romanización en este territorio, con significativos restos como el Arco de Cabanes. La mayor parte de las actuales poblaciones en la comarca son de origen musulmán, conquistadas por las tropas de Jaime I a partir de 1230. Sus numerosos castillos, así como la calidad de los mismos, denota la importancia que estas tierras tuvieron durante los primeros tiempos de la Reconquista. La zona norte tuvo, además, especial relevancia para la Orden del Temple, que tuvo una comanda en Les Coves de Vinromà. Es de destacar también la especial incidencia que en esta zona de litoral tuvieron los continuados ataques berberiscos, lo que nos ha permitido que lleguen hasta nuestros días numerosos restos de fortificaciones de varios periodos, especialmente torres vigía que defendían la costa y alertaban de posibles ataques. Muchas de ella han desaparecido por completo o sus restos son escasamente significativos.

This is one of the two districts into which Plana de Castellón (the Castellon Plain) is traditionally divided. There are records of human settlements existing in the area since the Eneolithic period, with important archaeological sites having been unearthed. Romanisation was also important in this area, with significant remains like the Roman Arch in Cabanes. Most of the present-day towns in the region are of Moorish origin, conquered by the troops of King James I after 1230. The quality and quantity of castles in the area are an indication of the importance of these lands during the early years of the Reconquest. The northern area was also considered to be of particular importance by the Order of the Temple, who set up a command post at Les Coves de Vinromà. Also worthy of note is the special impact the constant Berber attacks had on the coastal area. This has resulted in countless remains of fortifications from different periods which have survived to this day, especially watchtowers that defended the coastline and warned of possible attack. Many of these have either completely disappeared or else what still remains is of very little significance.

CABANES Naturaleza e historia hacen de Cabanes una combinación paisajística e histórica digna de cuantos visitantes la desean conocer. Nature and history come together in Cabanes to form a combination of historical monuments and scenery that will be the delight of all its visitors. Cabanes, municipio de la comarca de la Plana Alta, se encuentra a tan solo 26 kilómetros de Castellón. Las calles sinuosas del municipio poseen restos del recinto amurallado y de varios edificios civiles de interés arquitectónico: el antiguo Hospital y el Ayuntamiento (s. XV). A unos 2 Km. de la población se levanta el arco romano de Cabanes, cuya imponente imagen destaca en el Pla del Arc, se trata de tan soberbia estampa que no hay viajero que no sucumba a su hechizo. El casco antiguo posee restos del recinto amurallado, varios hornos góticos y casas que conservan elementos de tradición medieval. En el término municipal de Cabanes podemos destacar interesantes espacios naturales como el Paraje Natural del Prat de Cabanes, importante zona húmeda de la Comunitat Valenciana y el Paraje Natural del Desert de Les Palmes. Ambos son Parques Naturales y la visita a los mismos nos acercará a dos ecosistemas muy diferentes con importantes valores a conservar.

The winding streets of Cabanes contain the remains of the old walled town and various civilian buildings that are of interest to visitors: the old hospital and town hall (15th century). Cabanes, in the district of Plana Alta, is only 26 kilometres from Castellón. 2 kilometres outside the town is the Roman arch of Cabanes. Its imposing silhouette can be viewed all over the Pla del Arc and is such a majestic sight that there is not a single traveller that has not succumbed to its spell. In the old quarter, the winding streets contain the remains of the walled town, various Gothic kilns and houses that retain certain elements of medieval tradition. Within the confines of Cabanes, we can visit interesting natural sites like Prat de Cabanes, an area of important wetlands in the Region of Valencia and Desert de les Palmes. Both parks are nature reserves and a visit will enable us to see two very different ecosystems with important values that should be preserved.

SIERRA ENGARCERÁN Auténtico mirador de la plana desde donde se puede divisar la mayoría de las poblaciones de la comarca, el monte Penyagolosa y hasta las Islas Columbretes. La Serra tiene una población dispersa en masías y dos núcleos de población importantes: Els Ivarsos y Els Rosildos. En Els Ivarsos podemos contemplar la actual iglesia parroquial que es la misma que la abuela materna de San Luís Beltrán mandara construir. Y en Els Rosildos encontramos una de las neveras mejor conservadas de la provincia. En el casco urbano de Serra Engarcerán el palacio de los Casalduch (s. XVI y sede actual del ayuntamiento), la casona de los Beltrán y el antiguo Ayuntamiento, son obras importantes de arquitectura civil. Por otro lado, la riqueza paisajística de la zona, posibilita la práctica de senderismo a través de numerosas rutas señalizadas y el disfrute de un gran número de propuestas rurales.

Picturesque Serra Engarcerán is located within the region of Plana Alta. The local population is scattered about in farms and two important villages: Els Ivarsos and Els Rosildos. In Els Ivarsos we can visit the present church, which is the same one erected by Saint Luis Beltrán’s maternal grandmother. And in Els Rosildos there is one of the best preserved iceboxes caves in the whole province. In the village of Serra Engarcerán the 18th century Casalduch palace (the present Town Hall), the mansion of the Beltrán family and the former Town Hall are all important works of civil architecture. In addition, the richness of the local landscape provides many opportunities for rambling and hiking along numerous marked routes, as well as a large variety of other rural activities.
