WELCOME FROM MARK HAYES Good afternoon, and welcome to The Scott Rees & Co Stadium for this amazing fixture of Joseph's Goal Latics Legends versus Bryan Robson's Manchester United XI. This really has been one hell of a fixture to sort, and to be 100% honest with you, at one point I really thought it was out of my league. The planning for this game literally started whilst watching last yearâ€&#x;s game v Manchester City. It really does take some doing contacting so many stars, but it really is a dream role, and I am so, so proud to be able to pull it off for Joseph. I have had official apologies from so many stars for not being able to attend, and the levels of them have been ridiculous. Andrei Kanchelskis, Edwin Van Der Sar, and even Dimitar Berbatov, who sadly chose to play at Bayern Leverkusen this weekend, rather than the mighty Ashton Town ! After hitting so many dead ends in trying to get a United side, and after being told to change teams as I was failing by a few, I tried one last brainstorm. I had got in behind the scenes at Old Trafford but kept hitting brick walls, and to be fair they host Bayern Munich Legends tomorrow in front of 75,000, so I was really out of my league competing with this. But then a penny dropped, one of whom I had originally contacted was a Claire Robson, I googled Claire and it was as I thought, it was Bryan's daughter, and I simply asked her if she could ask her dad to play. That week I then had an email off Bryan asking for me to ring him, and I simply have rarely been prouder after having come off the phone with him, what a gent, what a human being.... ...The United game was finally made. To do these games you need a bit of financial help to get them possible. The aim as always is to provide this game for Joseph's Goal for literally zero cost, and I have a simply amazing team at Ashton Town, and added with my regular legends game volunteers we are able to pull this out of the bag for you. Financially our two main sponsors of Ashton Upholstery and Thorneycroft Solicitors have been amazing, as have Kappa, year in year out giving us the match kits completely free of charge. Enjoy the game everybody. Enjoy meeting your hero's once again., and thank you so, so much for your attendance. Here's hoping we smash the record made in raising loads for Joseph's Goal, and our mission to find a cure for the cruel NKH, Nonketotic hyperglycinemia, a rare, genetic, metabolic disorder. ABOUT JOSEPH & JOSEPH’S GOAL Joseph Michael Kendrick was born on the 9th May 2009, after an unremarkable pregnancy at 42 weeks. After his birth, although Joe was very quiet, he was thought to be otherwise healthy by the doctors. However, over the next couple of days, Joe rapidly deteriorated, and fell into a coma. Joseph was immediately taken to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where they began to test him to find the cause of his lethargy and low muscle tone. After six days, the Kendrick family found out that Joseph had a severe form of a very rare genetic disorder known as NKH. The Kendricks received the devastating news that Joseph was unlikely to live past 10days old, and almost certainly wouldn‟t reach his first birthday. Luckily for the Kendrick‟s, they were surrounded by a very supportive family who helped get them through the dark first few days. Paul, Emma, and the family waited every day around Joseph‟s cot, praying that he would wake up, open his eyes or cry. The family was informed of a special medicine (sodium benzoate), which may help Joseph to wake up, and remove some of the glycine from his brain, but not from his cerebral fluid. On day 13, to the relief of his family, Joseph finally „woke up‟, started to cry and act more like a „normal‟ little baby. Joe‟s parents were able to change his nappies, feed him through his tube and cuddle him, which meant everything to Paul, Emma and the family. Paul and Emma were told that he was very jerky due to a seizure called a myoclonic jerk, and if he lived, they would turn into other types of seizures. Joe managed to fight through the horrible days in hospital and was able to go home for the first time with his family around a month after his birth. Paul and Emma had a very worrying year waiting for him to fall very unwell as they were told by doctors and to stop breathing, but thankfully Joe never did. Joe is doing really well despite his condition. Joe still has frequent seizures but takes medicine to help control them. Having ate orally until he was 4-yearsold, Joe now has a gastrostomy for milk and medicines which is much easier to feed him through. Joe still manages tasters of food when he‟s well, and really enjoys yoghurt and ice cream in the summer months. Joe is also a very proud big brother to Sam and Tom and is doing really well at school. Joe‟s parents are very proud of their “strong and resilient” little boy and are proud on how well he has done to exceed all expectations. Joe made it very clear to his parents in showing that he wants to fight all the way, and his parents were inspired from this to fight on his behalf to help create awareness of this heart-breaking condition, find better treatment for him, and one day find a cure for NKH. Parents, Paul and Emma Kendrick formed the Joseph‟s Goal charity in 2012 and have raised over £700,000 since their foundation just seven years ago. Joseph‟s Goal are fighting to find better treatments and hopefully, a cure for NKH, with raised funds being sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London for further research into the condition. Both doctors have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is finally some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away.

Joseph‟s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, ran by a small group of family and friends who all volunteer their services. The charity has received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. Joseph‟s Goal have raised most of their funds through charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. Ashton Town AFC now host an annual charity legends football match, after the huge success of the inaugural match in May 2015, with the Latics legends thumping an Hollyoaks XI 10-0 with a sensational performance. Town chairman Mark Hayes was touched by Joe‟s story and has been actively involved in the charity‟s fundraising efforts for several years. This year‟s event is the fifth annual Joseph‟s Goal legends game and is set to be another classic with the likes of Bryan Robson, Emmerson Boyce and Arjan De Zeeuw gracing the Ashton Town turf. Since Joseph‟s story was shared publicly, the 10year-old has become a little star in the local area and recognised throughout the United Kingdom for his fantastic story in defying all the odds. Joseph‟s Goal has also received support from multiple football, rugby and television stars over the years including Pep Guardiola, Harry Redknapp and Joe Calzaghe. In 2013, Joe was the mascot for Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup Final and was carried out onto the pitch at Wembley by skipper, and charity ambassador Emmerson Boyce, which led to television appearances on BBC North West, ITV Granada and Sky News. Many Latics fans believe that Joe was a lucky charm as Wigan defied the odds to beat Manchester City 1-0 and claim their first major trophy in the club‟s history, similar to how Joe managed to defy all the odds given by the doctors to reach his 10th birthday on Thursday May 9th 2019. Joe‟s father Paul Kendrick, a life-long Wigan Athletic supporter and the Latics correspondent for Wigan Today, was gobsmacked that Joe was given the opportunity to be a mascot. In 2014, Joseph‟s family were the WISH FM „Local Heroes Family of the Year‟, and Joseph switched on the Christmas lights in Wigan‟s Town Centre. Joseph‟s Goal was recognised further in 2014 by the Wigan Council for contributing to the „Believe in Wigan‟ campaign. In April 2019, Joe returned to his role as Wigan Athletics‟ lucky charm as he featured pitch side at half-time during Wigan‟s shock victory against Leeds United. This was after more than 70 Latics fans heroically walked 58-miles over three days for the charity from Wigan‟s Euxton training ground to Elland Road, organised by Martin Tarbuck from the Mudhutter fanzine. Joseph‟s story has inspired thousands of people to help fundraise for NKH and contribute to their bid in finding a cure for the very rare condition. With a sell-out expected this afternoon, it will be a fantastic event in helping raise money for further research, and hopefully edge closer to the end goal of helping Joe and other children with the same condition. Joseph's Goal is a registered charity in England and Wales, and if you’d like to find out even more about the cause, or donate, please visit ...

JOSEPH’S GOAL LATICS LEGENDS MATCHES: A LOOK BACK ON THE ARCHIVES Friday 22nd May 2015: Latics Legends 10-0 Hollyoaks/Lime Pictures In the inaugural showpiece, the Latics Legends faced the cast of the hit Channel Four show Hollyoaks at Edge Green Lane, with the squad being brought together for the event by actor Nick Pickard. Latics Legends had a star-studded squad on show, with the likes of Roberto Martinez, Mario Melchiot, Chris Kirkland and Emmerson Boyce all featuring on the evening. The quality of the ex-professionals proved too high for the Hollyoaks XI to compete against, with the Latics Legends putting in a ruthless display to hammer the soap stars 10-0. FA Cup winning manager Roberto Martinez opened the scoring, before quickly turning provider to his partner-in crime Graeme Jones to double the lead. Alan Mahon added to the lead with a stunning left-footed volley, with further goals from Neil Roberts and Jason Jarrett making the score 5-0 to the Latics Legends going into the interval. Latics made several changes at half-time, however it did little to impact the side‟s rampant form in-front of goal against the visitors. Sean Clancey, brother in-law of Peter Crouch, was brought in as a „ringer‟ for the game and proved that his inclusion was the correct decision by making it six. Nathan Ellington scored the seventh goal of the evening with sensational solo effort, before Stuart Barlow scored a brace either side of captain Emmerson Boyce‟s driven volley. Hollyoaks XI put in a valiant effort and could return to Chester with their heads held high, with the game between the two sides always destined to be a one-sided contest given the calibre of players on show for the Latics Legends. Friday 13th May 2016: Latics Legends 2-0 Dutch Masters In 2016, Arjan De Zeeuw, who was voted Wigan Athletic‟s greatest ever player in a poll to celebrate the centenary of the PFA, constructed a team of „Dutch Masters‟ to fly in from the Netherlands to Ashton Town AFC to challenge the Latics Legends in the annual Joseph‟s Goal charity game. Working closely with fellow Dutch National Police team-mate Marco Miltenburg, De Zeeuw drafted in a team of stars, and with experienced players across the board, it provided a very tough test for the Latics Legends team. Former Latics stars Denny Landzaat and Jorg Smeets returned to Wigan for the event but joined Dutch Masters skipper De Zeeuw in wearing orange rather than the club‟s traditional blue and white colours. The Dutch were firmly in it to win it, proving to be no push-overs, however they returned to the Netherlands disappointed after an inspired Nathan Ellington performance led to the Latics Legends running out 2-0 winners on the evening. With both teams missing good chances to break the deadlock, prolific goal-scorer Nathan Ellington rolled back the years and finally made the breakthrough. The Duke then doubled the Latics Legends‟ lead from the penalty spot, after Stuart Barlow was brought down inside of the area by defender Marco Miltenburg. Ellington made it look easy, calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner, leaving goalkeeper Sander Westerveld completely routed. The event was hugely successful, raising over £11,500 for Joseph‟s Goal, with the „Dutch Masters‟ being invited back to Ashton Town for a rematch in 2017.

Friday 12th May 2017: Latics Legends 3-4 Dutch Masters After an 2-0 defeat in 2016, the Dutch Masters plotted to avenge their loss against the Latics Legends in a highly anticipated rematch. And the „Dutch Masters‟ achieved exactly what they set out to do, pipping the Latics Legends to the spoils in a seven-goal thriller in-front of another bumper crowd. The Latics Legends were looking to record a third consecutive victory and had yet conceded a goal in the charity matches before the return of the Dutch Masters. The Dutch Masters bolstered their squad for the rematch, controversially adding Greek striker Angelos Charisteas, alongside 1990 World Cup winner Gerald Vanenburg to their team. Charisteas‟ appearance could not be turned down, with the former Ajax man having scored the winning goal for Greece against Portugal in the UEFA Euro 2004 final. The Latics Legends however also strengthened, with the dream return of the iconic trio „The Three Amigos‟ whetting the appetite of Wigan fans. The „Three Amigos‟ reunited on Wigan soil for the first time since the 1990‟s and picked up from where they left off at Springfield Park. All „Three Amigos‟ had a significant impact on the evening, with Jesus Seba and Isidro Diaz both getting onto the scoresheet whilst Roberto Martinez pulled the strings in the midfield. The efforts of the „Three Amigos‟ however was not enough in preventing the Dutch Masters recording a victory after Arjan De Zeeuw‟s side overturned a twogoal deficit to win the affair by four goals to three. It was a dream start for the Latics Legends on the evening, after Jesus Seba‟s early shot sneaked in at the near post, catching former Liverpool shot-stopper Sander Westerveld off-guard. Fellow Spaniard Diaz made it 2-0 shortly after, racing onto Michael Brown‟s through ball before cheekily chipping the ball over the onrushing Westerveld. Romano Denneboom pulled a goal back for the visitors, coolly slotting the ball through the legs of Andrew Dawber after intercepting Emmerson Boyce‟s misplaced pass on the halfway line. Angelos Charisteas equalised on the verge of half-time, tapping home from close-range after a neat passing move from the „Dutch Masters‟ on the edge of the area. The Dutch Masters completed the turn-around in the second half after winger Ellery Cairo cut inside on the left before unleashing an fantastic curling strike into the top-right corner. Latics counted their lucky stars after Gerard Sibon‟s spot kick was saved by Lee Novak, however, the Dutch Masters did add a twogoal cushion to their lead through captain De Zeeuw‟s powerful strike from the edge of the area. Nathan Ellington continued his fine goal-scoring form in the Joseph‟s Goal charity games, with his fourth goal in three games, converting from the spot after a stonewall penalty was awarded by referee Gordon Johnson. The Duke‟s late goal sparked a nervy finish for the Dutch Masters, however De Zeeuw‟s side held on for the victory despite Latics‟ best efforts to grab a dramatic leveller at the death. Saturday May 12th 2018: Latics Legends 4-4 Man City XI The Latics Legends narrowly defeated Manchester City XI on penalties in the fifth instalment of the Joseph‟s Goal charity showpiece. The fixture was in the form of an FA Cup final rematch and history repeated itself yet again as Latics prevailed in a six-goal thriller at Ashton Town in-front of a packed house. The game handily took place on Saturday May 12 2018 which marked the fifth anniversary since Wigan Athletic shocked the entire football world by winning the coveted FA Cup at Wembley. Nathan Ellington opened the scoring with a delicious chip from outside of the 18-yard box before Paul Scharner doubled Latics‟ lead before the break with a bullet header. A THANK YOU NOTE FROM PAUL KENDRICK Welcome to our fifth annual Joseph's Goal legends game here at Ashton Town FC...with our Latics side facing their biggest test yet in the form of Bryan Robson's Manchester United XI.

It never ceases to amaze me how many of our heroes from yesteryear make the effort to come and support our game and our charity. The word 'legend' is bandied around all too easily these days, but every single one of today's players fits the bill for giving up their time - and at their own expense - to help. A massive 'thanks' as ever to Mark Hayes and everyone at Ashton Town for everything they do for Joseph's Goal - both for this game and throughout the year. And an even bigger 'thank you' to each and every one of you spectators for joining us for what has become one of the highlights of the calendar. Every penny raised will do so much good in the fight for a cure for the rare genetic disorder, NKH. And we continue to make huge steps forward in ground-breaking research. Together we will achieve Joseph's Goal! Enjoy the game, Paul Kendrick.
