So, on the back of a well-earned away point at high flying Cleator Moor Celtic, Interim Manager Terry Smith took charge of his first Home game against local rivals Daisy Hill. There were of course changes from the team from our trip to Cumbria, with captain Carl Lownsbrough and keeper Zac Hibbert returning to the starting eleven together with a first start this season for midfield player, James Ludgate. In torrential rain and near monsoon conditions at times, the visitors started the brightest, but Ashton gradually began to grow into the game after the first fifteen minutes of play. After 29 minutes Dave Moore was crudely brought down just outside the visitorâ€&#x;s penalty area, about 20 yards from goal. Up stepped the man of the moment, Rustam Stepans, who duly sent the free kick into the top corner of the visitorâ€&#x;s net with a truly fantastic strike to open his account for the season. The visitors battled back though, and Town were kept ahead on 33 minutes with a fantastic save from keeper Zac Hibbert who rose to tip a goal bound effort over the bar for a corner kick to the visitors. So, the score remained one nil to Town until the half time interval. Daisy Hill started the second half the strongest though and were level after 68 minutes with a superb strike from around twenty yards which gave keeper Hibbert no chance at all. Manager Terry Smith made his only

change of the game on 75 minutes with Tom Hewlett replacing Kieran Alley who, to be fair had led the visitors a merry dance for most of the game, terrorising their left back whenever he had the ball at his feet. This on such a heavy pitch due to the constant rain took its toll on Kieran and manager Smith saw a fresh set of legs were needed up front, hence the change. On 82 minutes the substitution appeared to be a master stroke as substitute Hewlett, pictured scoring, put Town into a two one lead. The game remained finely balanced though, with Daisy Hill continuing to press for their second equaliser. On 86 minutes though Tyreek McCallum strode forward and hit a tremendous shot that was saved by the daisy Hill keeper. The save fell kindly to Rustam Stepans whose shot struck the post and was then again saved by the keeper but this time he was too slow to react, and captain Carl Lownsbrough slid in to give Town a three one lead. Cue ecstatic celebrations by the Town players and a crowd of 125 who had braved the elements to watch what can be best described as a fantastic advert for NonLeague football and the North West Counties League in particular.

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon, Let me start by welcoming all our supporters and also our visitors Chadderton for today's league game. What a fantastic 10 days or so it's been here at the club since stepping in as interim manager. I don't think I could have asked for a better start. We followed up Tuesdays nights draw a Cleator Moor Celtic, with a very structured training session on Thursday night and then great win and outstanding performance against Daisy Hill on Saturday. It wasn't just the result and performance that pleased me, it was the togetherness the players displayed after what has been a confusing few days for them. Despite this, Hopefully we can continue our good form the attitude of the players has been today and keep climbing the table. brilliant, they have just knuckled down Myself, James and Colin have been working and worked hard. tirelessly since coming in and have been The lads took on board what we had talking most days. On this day 31st october 31st October 2002 When the Football Association replaced Graham Kelly with Adam Crozier as chief executive in January 2000, they hoped that the skills that seen him become CEO of advertising giants Saatchi and Saatchi would help bring the FA into the 21st century. And to be fair despite having no experience in football and being Scottish! He oversaw some major changes and achievements in the organisation running much of English football. During his tenure the FA moved their HQ from Lancaster Gate to Soho Square, England controversially employed their first foreign manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson, the management structure was dramatically streamlined with the FA becoming more commercially aware, the Wembley Stadium rebuild project went from a dream to reality....and England won 5-1 in Germany! But he also had his critics. In October 2002 in newspaper articles Ken Bates said that Crozier was 'hopelessly out of control' and had 'exceeded his authority' and several days

later, on October 31st, 2002, Adam Crozier resigned his £613,000 FA job. He later became CEO at Royal Mail and ITV and was replaced at the FA by current Tranmere Rovers Chairman Mark Palios. 31st October 2007 Monthly pay doesn't seem real until you've had a chance to look at the payslip but for Liverpool's John Arne Riise on this day in 2007 his monthly pay became real for anyone with an internet connection. A copy of one his monthly payslips mysteriously appeared on the net and proved very interesting reading. A monthly basic of £120,000 plus £4,000 appearance money, £250 points bonus and £15,384.62 for the Champions League making a total of £139,634.62. Deductions totalled £57,220.95, tax £55,508.28, NIC £1,611.67 and meals and tickets £101 leaving take-home of £82,413.67 for the month! How on earth he could make ends meet with that!

Who’s played at edge green st Daniel Vaughn Webber was born in Manchester on 28th December 1981; he is a former English professional football striker who represented England at Under 20 level five times during 2002.

He then joined Portsmouth for an injury-plagued two-year spell. He signed a short-term deal with Leeds United in February 2012 and, after being released at the end of the season, was left with no club until he joined Doncaster Rovers in March 2013 on non-contract terms. He signed with Accrington Stanley in July 2013, where he remained for one season before joining non-league side Salford City in August 2014, helping the side to win the Northern Premier League Division One North title in 2014–15, and then promotion out of the Premier Division play -offs in 2015–16, before he announced his retirement from football in July 2016. On leaving Accrington Stanley in the summer of 2014 Webber finished with a career total of 281 professional appearances scoring 54 goals in total.

Webber began his career as a trainee with Manchester United, but failed to cement a first team place and spent loan spells with Port Vale and Watford before joining Watford in a permanent deal in 2003. After two years with Watford, Webber joined Sheffield United for the second half of the 2004–05 season. That loan also became a permanent transfer at the end of the season, and during the 2005–06 season, Webber's goals helped Sheffield United to promotion to the Premier League for 2006–07. Three years later, after scoring 20 goals in 107 league appearances for the Blades, Webber's contract was allowed to expire and he was released from the club.

Webber appeared here at Edge Green Street on 25th May 2019 when he led the front line alongside Derek Brazil in the Manchester United Legends team, captained on the day by Bryan Robson, against the Joseph‟s Goal Latics Legends.

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until

1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by noone, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy

Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare, Joanne and more recently, Keith whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto ...... „Onwards & Upwards‟, sums us up as we now strive for promotion.
