WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Good afternoon, and welcome to all to this North West Counties First Division North game against AFC Darwen. Today's game is against one of our old foes from our time in the Counties, and I can certainly remember quite a few good battles with today's visitors. AFC Darwen sit just 4 points above us in the league and have had an inconsistent season to date, however they beat Longridge just a couple of games ago and as we know they are some team, so we need to be prepared for battle today. We have had a great couple of results on the road, and ones that I am trying not to take personal as I missed them both! We were bound to find form, and with the quality additions that we have brought in, I hope that this can be the start of a great few months. Thanks to all whom have attended today, I am hoping that there will be a few Wigan fans in and amongst the crowd following Bolton's ridiculous charge of ÂŁ35 for today's game. Hereâ€&#x;s hoping your dabble into non league is good today, and that we see you again before the season is out. Onwards and upwards as always. Mark Club Chairman 3

MANAGERS NOTES

Thank you for coming along today to support us in our league tie against AFC Darwen. We anticipate this to be a difficult game and one that we have prepared for in the right manner and feel positive about after our recent fixtures. The last two results havenâ€&#x;t come about as a shock to our squad as we know what we are capable of and the quality of our dressing, it seems like things have just clicked. Going back to last Tuesday we visited Prestwich Heys FC where we started relatively slowly and allowed them to dictate the game. We went 1-0 down due to this but quickly fired back with a superb half volley from out new player Rhys Bowers. Once again we made a calamity of individual errors and gifted Prestwich a 2 nd goal going in 2-1 down at the break. Half time was hair dryer treatment for the lads and they responded in spectacular fashion scoring 3 second half goals after Prestwich had a player sent off. The character of our lads that night simply mapped across to Saturdays performance against Nelson. From the kick off we starting quickly and won our battles, we played some really pleasing football and managed to break the deadlock through a superb long range finish from Brad Smart. As soon as the 2 nd half kicked off there was only one team that were going to come away with all 3 points and through a superb display from Dylan Glass securing a 2nd half hat-trick we managed to leave with 4-1 win. We are evidently looking forward to todayâ€&#x;s game and hoping for some of the same. Everyone involved is feeling confident and ready to work hard for more points. Thanks for the support as ever. ASHTON TOWN RESERVES PROGRESS IN LCFA SATURDAY JUNIOR CUP

On Saturday 10th November 2018 Ashton Town reserves faced ACOL who normally ply their trade in the Second Division of the Liverpool County FA Premier league.

The game played at Edge Green Street was in the third round of the Liverpool County FA Saturday Junior Cup Competition, with Town reserves having progressed at the expense of Collegiate OB in a penalty shootout in the previous round. The game was preceded with an impeccably observed minutes silence to commemorate 100 years since Armistice Day ending the First World War in 1918. (Pictures attached)

In a keenly contested and very close tie, Ashton Town edged home by one goal to nil, the goal coming from Charlie Ennis in the 77th minute of the game, a fantastic back post header beating the ACOL keeper. The game was unfortunately marred with a double sending off in the second half with a Town player suffering a bite to his cheek from one of the visitors, the less said about that the better with the incident currently being investigated by Liverpool County FA. The reserve team now progress to a quarter final tie in which they have been drawn at home to face Halewood Apollo FC from the First Division of the Warrington & District Football League. This tie is scheduled to be played with a 2.00pm kick off here at Edge Green Street on Saturday 2nd February 2019. 12

WORDS ON THE WEEK W/E SATURDAY 24/11/18

Sharp shooting City r In recent weeks we have referred on these pages to Carlisle City's firepower and in particular the goalscoring form of striker Rob McCartney, and the trend continued on Saturday with City's 11-2 win over Eccleshall in the First Division Challenge Cup. It's an impressive feat to score four goals in a game, but on Saturday Rob did it for the third time this season, following on from quartets against AFC Darwen and AFC Liverpool earlier in the season. What's more, he had team mate Marc Shiel for company, who also bagged four goals in the win. With no sign of a mid-season blip as the Cumbrians continue their promotion chase, opposing defences could be for a tough time in the coming weeks when City come to town. Great County Cup debut for Breck Lower Breck's first foray into the Liverpool Senior Cup as a member of the Hallmark Security League turned out to be a memorable one last Tuesday, as they beat Evo-Stik League side Skelmersdale United 2-0 at the Anfield Sports Centre. A fine result and an impressive start, and hopefully the first of many exciting cup occasions for manager Gary Moore and his men.

A f n g

Late late show from Alport again A stoppage time goal from Jordan Cole earned Whitchurch Alport a 1-1 draw against Irlam at Yockings Park on Saturday, demonstrating once again that no one can relax against Alport until the final whistle blows. Saturday was the third time in the space of just a few weeks that they have scored in stoppage time to claim valuable points, with goals against Burscough and Charnock Richard turning draws into victories. Saturday's point was Alport's first in four games, proving there is clearly no shortage of fighting e spirit among Luke Goddard's men. t Barlick and Zack will remember November Barnoldswick Town will look back to the past few weeks as a time that they found their mojo, after a mixed run of results in October. Saturday's 7-1 win at Abbey Hey was Barlick's fifth in succession since the start of the month, and that run has been achieved at a time when striker Zack Dale has found some fine form, scoring 10 of the 19 Barlick goals during the month so far. It's an impressive run by any standards, and the run of one win in four last month has long been forgotten.

Away days turning out well for Town Ashton Town continued their good away form last week, with the 4-2 win at Prestwich Heys on Tuesday being followed by a 4-1 win at Nelson on Saturday. That now means six wins on the road in the league for Town this season, an away record that is bettered only by league leaders Longridge Town, but with just one win at home so far, the chalf lenge for manager Dave Dempsey is to get his side to turn on the same style when on home soil. 13

HALLMARK SECURITY It‟s been a tough week for the Hallmark Security League, and a minutes‟ silence was held before all 28 games this weekend in memory of AFC Liverpool joint-manager Ben Williams, who tragically passed away. In the Premier Division, there was a huge result at the top as Congleton Town impressively cut the gap with leaders City of Liverpool to five points, defeating them 3-0 courtesy of goals from Thomas Schofield, Emini Adegbenro and Daniel Cope. But third placed Runcorn Town lost further ground as they lost 3-2 at home to Squires Gate, for whom Ric Seear notched a double, and Barnoldswick Town are now only a point behind them as they dispatched of Abbey Hey 7-1 on the road, Zac Dale grabbing four goals for the visitors. Bootle in fifth also struck seven on a lengthy away trip, with Ryan Cox and Carl Peers scoring twice as they stunningly did it without reply at a Silsden side who began the day just a place behind them. The Cobbydalers have now been overtaken by Northwich Victoria, who won 2-1 at Charnock Richard thanks to second half goals from Joel Brownhill and Darryhl Mason. Seventh placed Irlam led for much of the game at Whitchurch Alport thanks to Matthew Boland‟s early strike, but had to settle for a point after Jordan Cole‟s injury-time leveller. 1874 Northwich are up to ninth as goals from Samuel Hare and Scott McGowan saw off visitors Hanley Town 2-1, and they overtook Ashton Athletic in the process as the Yellows went down 2-0 at Litherland REMYCA, with James McShane and Colin Quirk scoring in the last 15 minutes. Padiham led 2-0 and 3-2 at Burscough, but an equaliser from Jordan Lorde with five minutes remaining meant it finished all square, and David Short bagged the winner as Winsford United came from behind at West Didsbury & Chorlton to edge a crucial clash at the bottom 2-1 and move six points clear of the bottom two. In the First Division Cup Third Round, one of the day‟s standout results came in Cumbria as Carlisle City thrashed Eccleshall 11-2. Marc Shiel and Robert McCartney both scored four for James Tose‟s team. They will be at home to Ellesmere Rangers in the quarter-final as the competition continues to provide optimism for the First Division South‟s bottom club: goals either side of the interval from Adam Davies and Seth Ellis gave them a terrific 2-0 triumph at AFC Blackpool. Another side who claimed an eye-catching 2-0 away victory were Avro as they eliminated a Rylands side who had been in red-hot form with first half goals from Mike Stockdale and Duncan Knott. They will welcome Garstang in the last eight, who drew 1-1 at Maine Road thanks to Jack Bennett‟s equaliser before edging an epic penalty shoot-out 13-12. 14

WEEKEND ROUND UP Bacup Borough were the other team to get through on spot kicks, knocking-out Barnton after a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes. Ryan Malone twice had the Villagers in front, but they were pegged back by Anthony Hall and then Adrian Bellamy with five to play. The draw sends Brent Peters‟ side away to Vauxhall Motors or AFC Liverpool; after the awful news in the week, that tie has been re-scheduled for Tuesday 4 December. Cheadle Heath Nomads booked their place in the quarters as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Wythenshawe Amateurs, Kieran Hibbert bagging the decisive goal late on. They will be at home to Sandbach United, who got through 2-0 at Alsager Town with Aidan Houghton and Kieran Garner-Knapper on the scoresheet. There were also fixtures in both First Divisions, with Longridge Town claiming a vital 4-1 home win against fellow high-flyers Lower Breck to extend their lead at the summit to four points. Paul Turner grabbed two for the hosts, with Richard Allen and a Thomas Ince penalty also helping them to earn the points. Shelley climbed to fourth as they saw off Holker Old Boys 3-1, Craig Billington making it 19 goals for the season before Kieran Taylor notched a brace. Steeton are now fifth as a hat-trick from Andrew Briggs earned them the spoils at Atherton LR, who remain seven points adrift at the foot of the table, and on Friday night firsthalf goals from Adam Farrell and Bradley Sixsmith saw Prestwich Heys edge past Chadderton 2-1. AFC Darwen leapfrogged Cleator Moor Celtic into ninth with a 3-0 home victory, and Ashton Town‟s good form continued as they won by the same scoreline at Nelson, with Dylan Glass scoring twice. There was also an important win for St Helens Town, who emphatically beat Daisy Hill 50, with Neil Weaver notching two for the away side. Into the South, Abbey Hulton United stretched their lead to five points as they overturned a half-time deficit to overcome Cammell Laird 1907 3-1. Lee Cropper grabbed the hosts‟ first and last of the afternoon. Brad Byrne‟s last minute goal – his second of the match – saw Wythenshawe Town move up to third as they triumphed 4-3 in a ding-dong encounter at Stockport Town. St Martins are fifth as Brendan Price‟s effort with 19 minutes to go was enough at Cheadle Town, and New Mills rose to thirteenth as they defeated Stone Dominoes 4-2.

WHO'S PLAYED AT Paul „Bigun‟ Ashbee is a massive character well known to Oasis fans. He was there at the beginning and is part of the history of the band. He convinced Liam to audition, he named the band and led them to glory. Having run a hugely successful car valeting business for 25 years Paul 'Bigun' Ashbee sold his business to solely focus on his work as a football agent. He is also an author, with his much anticipated memoirs @Giving it the Bigun‟ being published on 15th November 2018 Paul „Bigun‟ Ashbee, the man who first introduced the original Oasis members, has recently spoken out on what it would take for the band to reform. Ashbee has known Liam Gallagher for 32 years, first meeting when the singer was 14 before employing him as a car valet and introducing him to guitarist Paul „Bonehead‟ Arthurs. Together they then formed The Rain who would later become Oasis and take on Liam‟s brother, Noel Gallagher, as guitarist and chief songwriter. Ashbee has recently spoken out of the chances of the band reuniting, and believes that their mother Peggy could be the key to them burying the hatchet “I really do think a reunion will happen,” Ashbee recently told Manchester Evening News. “I thought it would happen last year and a lot of people say today they‟ll never get on but they‟ve never got on.” 16

T EDGE GREEN ST? “It wouldn‟t take much for them to get together. It would be a Christmas dinner or Peggy saying „come on boys, for your mum, for the people‟.” Ashbee went on to say: “They need to get over themselves and remember where it started. It‟s the fans that it‟s all about. Somebody needs to bang their heads together.” With regards to his recently published book Ashbee stated, “Noel and Liam know about the book,” he said. “When I told Liam he said „don‟t be slagging me off‟ but it‟s not about that. It‟s about being positive. Oasis is me. It‟s part of who I am.” Ashbee appeared here at Edge Green Street as a member of the Manchester City Legends team that played against the Latics Legends team on Saturday 12th May 2018, in the Joseph‟s Goal Charity football game. This game was arranged to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Wigan Athletics‟ famous FA Cup Final Victory over Manchester City five years earlier on 11th May 2013. The game ended in a four all draw and was won by the Latics side following a penalty shoot-out in which “Bigun” unfortunately missed his spot kick for the City team during the shoot-out to decide the game. LEAGUE TABLE 1ST DIV NORTH

19

www.hallmarksecurityleague.com/league-tables.php

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and are still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith (Kitman/Physio) whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion. 20

HISTORY OF AFC DARWEN THE FORMATION OF AFC DARWEN At the end of the 2008/2009 season Darwen Football Club ceased to exist after the club was wound up due to bad debts. One of the previous owners had systematically destroyed the club financially but, also discredited its reputation within the town which resulted in lower attendances and a reduction in the number of volunteers that gave up their valuable time to help keep the club running. With debts in excess of £60.000 it was inevitable that the club could not survive; fortunately the team managed to fulfil all of their fixtures in the 2008/09 season before the club was wound up. It was decided that Darwen still had the desire to field a town team, and although various people had left the club; meetings began to take place to discuss the future of Darwen Football Club. Derek Slater, former club secretary and reserve team manager of Darwen FC, had already set the ball rolling by forming AFC Darwen, a not for profit organisation. The lease was then secured back from the local council and AFC Darwen rose from the ashes. THE WEST LANCASHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE The F.A. instructed that AFC Darwen would start life at step 6 in the football pyramid, so their inaugural season began in the West Lancashire Football League. The aim of the club was to gain its place back in the North West Counties League, and go on to compete at a higher level. The club now had a good solid foundation, with 13 youth teams representing the club; which out of those 10 played on a Sunday in the East Lancashire Alliance and 3 teams competed on a Saturday in the Accrington and District Football League. With the age range from 7 to 15 year olds and with new teams to follow the infrastructure of the club was in a sound position to move forward. The club is now in the hands of people that live and breathe football, but more importantly understand what it takes to run a club at this level. AFC Darwen‟s first ever competitive game took place at the Anchor ground on Saturday 11th July 2009 in a pre-season friendly against AFC Liverpool from the North West Counties League. With Darwen winning 3-0 things looked bright for the future. With high expectations of a good season AFC Darwen soon realised that life in the West Lancashire football league wasn‟t going to be easy. Results over the first few games were inconsistent up until October 2009, after which the team went on a disastrous run of 8 straight defeats. With the realisation that the team was not progressing as expected, it was decided that a change in the management team was required. The difficult decision to replace Dennis Hill was made and Kenny Langford took over the reins as the first team manager. Results immediately improved and although the title was out of reach, at least the team could push on and try and finish in a respectable position. AFC Darwen finished 8 th, with a record of 13 wins, 3 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 42, conceded 54. 21

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY The Joseph’s Goal charity was set up in October 2012, by Paul and Emma Kendrick, to raise funds for research into NKH, (Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia), the life-limiting genetic condition that their son, Joseph, was born with. NKH is caused by an excess of glycine on the brain. Joseph was given five days to live but reached his ninth birthday in May this year. He is severely disabled and suffers from seizures. But he is resilient and is a fighter, and we, in turn, are fighting to find better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for NKH, which is very rare, with only fifteen children still surviving in the UK, and less than five hundred worldwide. Joseph’s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, run by a small group of family and friends, who all volunteer their services. No-one is paid. We have received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. In four years we have raised over £340,000, largely from charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. The funds raised have been sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London. Both have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is, at last, some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away. Since Joseph‟s Goal began, Joe has become a little celebrity locally: - in 2013, he was the mascot for Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup Final and was carried out onto the pitch at Wembley by the captain, Emmerson Boyce, which resulted in television appearances on BBC NW, Granada, and Sky News; - in 2013, Joseph‟s family were the WISHFM „Local Heroes Family of the Year‟; - in 2014, Joseph switched on the Xmas Lights in Wigan Town Centre; - in 2014, Joseph‟s Goal was recognised by Wigan Council as contributing to the „Believe in Wigan” campaign; - and in 2016, Joseph‟s Goal was a Finalist in the GM Chamber of Commerce Wigan Business Awards. If you are looking for a charity to support, then please consider our charity, and help Joseph to achieve his Goal. 22
