Welcome to our club Good afternoon and welcome to Profiles Park for this afternoons North West Counties North tie against AFC Darwen. Well football is far from the simple game, and I certainly didn't expect to be as busy as I was last Sunday. Let's put all things aside and remember that Demps, as short as it was, had a fantastic second spell here. He has left us stronger again and sorted the likes of the changing rooms which was an amazing commitment.

Coach Adam has a huge opportunity at this football club, and with Muzza's help I am confident we can continue to drive in the right direction.

Money talks in football and at all levels and its a huge opportunity at Widnes and I wish him well, however the door and the chapters are firmly shut now at Ashton Town. What my priority is, is to keep these lads together. We have an amazing group whom work so hard for each other and I don't want anything to change. That means Head

Thank you again as always for your support, it truly does mean a hell of a lot to have you as out 12th man and here's to hopefully getting a deserved 3 points. Stay safe,

What I saw away against Bury was magnificent. Literally every player chasing every ball, and literally throwing themselves at every ball. The result was tarnished by a controversial penalty and I just hope that these decisions level themselves out pretty soon. If we continue to go forward with such commitment, passion, and determination then I will be a very proud Chairman.

Mark - Club Chairman - Ashton Town AFC

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN as Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted to Div 1 in their 1st season. However, quickly relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16th. Towards the end of 1910/11 season the club withdrew from the league and fixtures were taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League. They played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958.

The founder was a persistent man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road due to land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in

Bryn until 1964 when the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street which was previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers.

This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt. Then in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built.

Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare, Joanne and more recently, Keith whose dedication and work rate is second to none on quite often a day-to-day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe (pic below), who has on and

The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league ever since with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett R.I.P 5/5/20 (right pic far right) and Jimmy Cahill (pic below far right). The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years‟ service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James off, over the years worked behind the Horner made a massive boost to the club scenes painting, digging or mending often with the long overdue formation of a Junior without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto ...... „Onwards & Upwards‟, sums us up as we now strive for promotion.

HISTORY OF At the end of the 2008/2009 Darwen FC; which was founded in 1870, was re-formed as AFC Darwen. The challenges of 21st century football and economic constraints meant that the club needed to be able to respond to these changes. Despite the challenges it was still clear that Darwen still had the desire to field a town team, and although various people had left the club; meetings began to take place to discuss the future of football in the town. As a result AFC Darwen was formed as not for profit organisation. The lease was then secured from the Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and AFC Darwen rose from the ashes. THE WEST LANCASHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE As a result of the re-formation of the club AFC Darwen started life at step 6 in the football pyramid, so their inaugural season began in the West Lancashire Football League. The aim of the club was to gain its place back in the North West Counties League, and go on to compete at a higher level. The club now had a good solid foundation, with 13 youth teams representing the club; which out of those 10 played on a Sunday in the East Lancashire Alliance and 3 teams competed on a Saturday in the Accrington and District Football League. With the age range from 7 to 15 year olds and with new teams to follow the infrastructure of the club was in a sound position to move forward. The club is now in the hands of people that live and breathe football; but more importantly understand what it takes to run a club at this level and who are passionate about “grassroots” football. AFC Darwen‟s first ever competitive game took place at the Anchor ground on Saturday 11th July 2009 in a pre-season friendly against AFC Liverpool from the North West Counties League. With Darwen winning 3-0 things looked bright for the future. With high expectations of a good season AFC Darwen soon realised that life in the West Lancashire football league wasn‟t going to be easy. Results over the first few games were

inconsistent up until October 2009, after which the team went on a run of 8 straight defeats. However the club strengthened the management team and finished the season in 8th position, with a record of 13 wins, 3 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 42, conceded 54. THE NORTH WEST COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE At the end of the 2009/10 season AFC Darwen gained re-election back into the North West Counties Football League after achieving the required ground grading standards to compete at that level. The main aim of the club, now back in the NWCFL, was to steady the ship and cement their place in the league. AFC Darwen finished 13th, with a record of 9 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats, goals scored 37, conceded. 62. This was seen as a respectable position for the first season. During the close season before the start of the 2012/13 campaign the structure of the club changed in order to make the club more efficient. The changes helped the club the move forward more positively not only on the pitch, but also on the development of the ground. AFC Darwen finished 5th, with a record of 20 wins, 3 draws and 11 defeats, goals scored 79, conceded 57. AFC Darwen also reached the semi-final of the 1st division trophy. The 2013/14 season proved to be disappointing for the first team, finishing 9th, with a record of 15 wins, 7 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 64, conceded 64. However they had successful cup runs; yet again reaching the semi-final of the first division trophy. They also reached the semi-final of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy narrowly losing to Chorley. This was a major achievement with AFC Darwen being the first club at North West Counties league level to reach a semi-final in such a prestigious competition. The reserves won the clubs first silverware by winning the reserve division cup; beating Irlam on penalties when the tie had finished at 2-2 after extra-time. Having seen the club develop successfully it was also decided that for the club to progress the youth teams would have to be fully amalgamated to the club and play under the same L.F.A. Registration as the first and reserve teams.

F afc darwen At the start of the 2014/15 campaign, not many could have predicted just how incredible the season would turn out to be. AFC Darwen got off to a good start and looked to be one of the favourites to gain promotion, however with the team competing well in the cup competitions and the weather starting to play havoc with the fixtures, Darwen soon found themselves with significant challenges. However the club policy of fielding a reserve team proved pivotal towards the success of the first team in the latter stages of the season due to injuries and suspensions. After beating Ashton Town in the First Division Cup Semi -Final at the end of March, Darwen embarked on a mammoth 9 league games in just 20 days, winning 8 and drawing 1. This achievement pushed the team into third place and into the enviable position of a home tie in the playoff semi-final and final. With a 2-1 win against Chadderton, Darwen set-up a home tie against 4th place Hanley Town in the first ever NWCFL play off final. What made the effort even more outstanding is that during the 20 day period leading up to the match against Hanley Town Darwen played the league champions Atherton Collieries in the Reusch First Division Cup Final. It was to be a memorable night with Darwen winning the cup with a fantastic 3 – 1 score line against a very good side. In front of over 840 spectators; the NWCFL biggest crowd of the season for a league game Darwen produced a stunning performance to defeat Hanley Town 5 – 3 and win promotion to the NWC Premier league. Not only did AFC Darwen do the double by wining promotion and division cup, other significant milestones where also achieved. No Darwen/AFC Darwen team had scored over 100 goals in a season since the NWCFL was formed in 1982, and two players scored 30 plus goals. The total record for the 2014/15 season is as follows: 22 wins, 8 draws and 8 defeats, goals scored 110, conceded 64. Ryan Steele scoring 41 and Paul Coote getting 30. The reserves also had success finishing 2nd in their first ever season in the East Lancashire Football League 2nd Division.

arwen.co.uk

Everyone involved with the AFC Darwen knew that the 2015/16 Season would be a big test for the club. Peter Devine, exprofessional player took over as first team manager; however after just one pre-season friendly Peter decided to leave the club. This proved to be a very challenging period for the club with a number of managers coming and going with the result that the club was pushed into a relegation fight to survive in the top division. This also proved very difficult for the players to form any kind of consistency until Adam Douglas took charge and the impact on moral was immediately evident and the team had regained the will and desire to fight for survival. Although they lost their first two games in charge performances significantly improved and the sense of desperation began to lift from around the ground. The relegation fight went right to the end; going into the last game of the season AFC Darwen required a draw or win to secure premiership football. The team Produced a fine performance, beating Cammell Laird 1907 4-1 to maintain their status. With 13 games left it looked unlikely that they would survive, but the whole management team along with the players played a significant role in changing the fortunes of the club ” a massive achievement” AFC Darwen finished 18th, winning 12, 7 draws and 23 defeats, scoring 82 league goals and conceding 111.

Who’s played at edge green st John Richard Filan was born on 8th February 1970 in Sydney, Australia. He played for St. George Saints and Wollongong Wolves in the old National Soccer League in Australia before moving to England to join Cambridge United in 1993, after an unsuccessful trial at Southampton. In 1995, he signed for Coventry City, then moved on to Blackburn Rovers in 1997. He joined Wigan Athletic in December 2001 for £600,000. Prior to the start of Wigan's debut season in the Premier League he had missed only one match for the club but was injured at the start of the 2005–06 season with Wigan's new signing Mike Pollitt taking his place in the side. Filan, however signed

a new contract which kept him at the club until 2007. Seeing out his contract with Wigan, he was released at the end of the season. Whilst at Wigan he appeared as a substitute in the 2006 Football League Cup Final when Pollitt had to come off early in the first half with an injury. He is also remembered for saving a Nolberto Solano penalty in a 1-0 win over Newcastle United in February 2007. He was capped three times by Australia. Filan was a member of the Australian team that competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and finished in fourth place. As he has an Irish passport through his ancestry, he once sought to play international football for Ireland. However, FIFA ruled against it in February 1999 because he had played for the Australian Olympic team. Filan appeared here at Edge Green Street in May 2015 playing in goal for the Latics Legends team that beat a Holyoaks Celebrity XI 10-0 in the inaugural „Josephs Goal‟ charity football game.

OOK REVIEW After reading the book, former footballer Gerry Francis wrote, This book is a very well written and fascinating account of a professional footballer‟s family‟s life, with a great insight into how the industry works, its ups and downs, pressures and triumphs and disappointments. But for myself this book is about life itself, including religion, beliefs, the sacrifices you have to make to be or to do what you might want out of life itself. Making vital decisions under pressure that not only affect you but your whole family. About living your life at whatever level you are at, and making decisions along the road as best you can for yourself and the people you love. What‟s important in life for the individual is so different and complex! I thoroughly recommend this book!! Gavin Peacock is husband to Amanda and father to Jake and Ava. He is currently the associate pastor at Calvary Grace Church of Calgary and the Director of International Outreach for CBMW. He previously played football professionally for Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle United and was also a pundit on BBC's Match of the Day programme.

Head coach’s NOTES Good afternoon everyone. First of all, I want to thank David Dempsey and Karl Bell for their contribution to the club this season and wish them the best of luck at Widnes.

Secondly, I would like to say how brilliant the players have been over the last ten days and how well they have responded to losing their manager and assistant so early in the season. Training leading up to the Bury game was fantastic and although we did not get the result we wanted away at Bury, we have shown in glimpses the quality that we have in this squad. Had it not been for a contentious penalty decision, we may have walked away with some big points to add to our tally. I thought we defended well in the first 45 minutes and this is something that Neil and I have identified as an area to improve on. Looking forward we have a great opportunity, back at home, to get 3 vital

points against a good AFC Darwen side and get us back on track this season. We are behind where we wanted to be at this moment in time but we are striving to climb up the table and finally gain some momentum this season. With a good run of home games coming up, we are sure we can achieve that. I would like to thank the club for putting their faith in us to continue with the current squad and we will give everything we have to gain success and your support, as fans, is vital.

Enjoy the game and thank you once again for your support so far this season. Adam.

Town went close to equalising on 15 minutes when Tommy Grindrod rattled the Golcar cross bar from 20 yards out and on 41 minutes a jay White effort was deflected over the Golcar crossbar which saw the visitors hanging onto their one goal advantage into the half time break. It could be argued that the visitors were extremely lucky to reach half time without Despite Town's early pressure that created a conceding especially when Leon Wright few attempts on the Golcar goal, totally clearly beat a defender to the ball inside against the run of play the visitors took the the Golcar penalty area only to be crudely lead on six minutes with what was their first bundled over from behind with the match shot on goal of the game. referee waving away appeals for what was an obvious foul and should have resulted in Un-perturbed by the setback Town rallied a penalty kick being awarded to Town.

golcar 4/9/21 The second half started much as the first had ended with Town again piling pressure on the visitors only to be punished with a 'Sucker Punch' break up field from which Golcar extended their lead to two goals with only their second attempt on goal. Manager Dave Dempsey then made the first of three second half changes introducing Dave Moore in place of Tommy Grindrod. The change almost paid dividends immediately with Town Debutant Michael Conlon striking a shot against the Golcar crossbar yet again. Further town changes followed with joint top scorer Rustam Stepan coming off the bench in place of skipper and birthday boy Jack Richards and John Edgerton entering the fray in place of Leon Wright. As Town re-organised slightly Golcar nearly capitalised and extended their lead only for a 79th minute effort to this time bounce back into play off the Twon upright. On 84 minutes though the Town comeback began in earnest. Dave Moore having won a corner kick out on the right took up a central position for the corner, making a darting

run to the near post from where he powered a header into the back of the Golcar net to reduce the deficit to one goal again. Straight from the re-start Town again regained possession and a ball played into substitute Rustam Stepans was partially blocked by a defender, taking all the pace from Rusty's shot and allowing the visiting keeper to comfortably collect the ball. Town continued to pile pressure onto the clearly worried visitors though and in the 89th minute a cross from the left dropped kindly for Substitute John Edgerton at the far post, Edgy steadied himself before smashing the ball home to complete the Town comeback and to send Ashton players and spectators alike into wild celebrations. With the referee playing five added minutes at the end of the 90 though this game was far from over and both sides nearly stole the three points. Golcar were denied by a fantastic diving save from Town keeper James McClenaghan and in the dying seconds a Dave Moore diving header flashed narrowly over the Golcar crossbar. The game then ended with honours even at two all but on the balance of play over 90 minutes this was surely a game which Town may well look back on as two points dropped ! #ProudToBeTown
