WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Good afternoon, and welcome to all to this Hallmark Security League First Division North game against AFC Liverpool. Its been a mixed bag for our opening weeks back in the North West Counties, and I have to say that first game caught me a little off guard. We have had a decent pre season and to get beat 5 0 in our opening fixture was the last thing I wouldâ€&#x;ve thought. We did have two huge players missing in Daley and Brad, but no excuses, Avro were class, and that just shows the quality we will have in the league this season with the new teams coming in on mass, and all chomping at the bit for results. When I say I was caught off guard, I mean on a whole, not just by the oppositions team, but also the facilities. The last time we had played at that ground was when Oldham Town had it, and the pitch was a complete bog. We turned up on that first day and it was a 4g carpet ! Hats off big time to Avro, the place looked completely different and professional, and they even had boxer Anthony Crolla watching from the stands ! Avro was a lesson learnt for me. Not that I ever thought our return to the Counties would be easy, but I certainly didnt expect to be hit with what I did. Todayâ€&#x;s game is a little different. Afc although relatively new, are very much known to us, and I am confident of a good game. Afc wont be easy though, and will still be disappointed in their trip to Ashton earlier in the week when Athletic knocked them out of the FA Cup via a replay. Onwards and upwards as always. HALLMARK SECURITY Saturday saw the Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on the agenda for 27 of our clubs, and eight booked places in the next round with a further eight involved in midweek replays to determine their fate. There was eight ties that paired two of clubs together, and the highest scoring game was at the Litherland Sports Park, where Litherland REMYCA raced into a three goal lead inside 22 minutes at home to Charnock Richard, eventually winning 4-2. Prestwich Heys from Division One North took the scalp of Premier Division Abbey Hey at Adie Moran Park, where Theodore Kidd's 5th minute opener for Heys was almost immediately cancelled out by Aaron Rodger for Abbey. But Jacob Wood's header three minutes into the second half clinched a 2-1 win for Heys, and a mouth watering derby clash with Evo-Stik League side Radcliffe in the next round. There were two away winners in the allHSL ties, and at the St Lukes Barton Stadium, a last minute winner from Jordan Buckley clinched a 2-1 win for Irlam over Winsford United. Meanwhile, at the Recreation Ground, goals from Ryan Charley, Brett Dawson and Joe Booth in the first 52 minutes set Squires Gate on the way to victory at West Didsbury & Chorlton, although two late goals from home side meant a 3-2 win in the end for the visitors. Two other games ended in 3-1 home wins, with Joe Holt scoring twice in the opening 19 minutes of City of Liverpool's 31 win over Silsden, and AFC Darwen won by the same score at home to Barnton, all the goals coming in the second half. Eleven of our clubs faced opponents from other leagues, and Whitchurch Alport produced one of the results of day, winning 1-0 at Midland League Premier Division side Coventry Sphinx thanks to a goal from Lee Pickerill 19 minutes from time. The other of our teams to win on the day against opponents from another league were Congleton Town, whose 1-0 win over Eccleshill United from the Northern Counties East League was earned by a successfully converted penalty on the hour by Emini Adegbenro. Eight clubs face midweek replays, with two of those being all-Premier Division ties. A last minute equaliser from Callum Schorah earned a 2-2 draw for AFC Liverpool at home to Ashton Athletic, and Burscough made a flying start at home 1874 Northwich with goals from Chad Whyte and Terry Cummings putting them two up within 14 minutes. But Matthew Woolley pulled one back for 1874 just before half time, and a Scott McGowan equaliser 16 minutes from time ensured a midweek replay. A second half equaliser from Robert Doran earned Northwich Victoria a 1-1 draw against Widnes on the Townfield ground in Barnton that hosted Vics' home games last season, and it was the same score down in Warwickshire where Hanley Town were held to a 1-1 draw at Atherstone Town. Both Barnoldswick Town and Runcorn Town took the lead in their respective ties, but in the end had to settle for 1-1 draws. Barlick's Andrew Hill opened the scoring at home to Billingham Synthonia at the Silentnight Stadium and Runcorn Town's Stephen Lewis did likewise at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, but will require success in midweek replays to ensure their progress in to the next round. 14

WEEKEND ROUND UP The remaining five of our clubs who faced opponents from other leagues saw their interest end in the competition, with Ellesmere Rangers and Maine Road losing 1-0 at home to Leicester Road and Handsworth Parramore respectively, and Parkgate ensured that Sandbach United's first experience of the FA Cup wasn't a winning one, with United going down 2-0. Padiham had a day to forget at Liversedge, losing 5-2 and a winner 20 minutes from time ensured that Penistone Church posted a 2-1 win over Bootle. There were also eight games in Division North and seven in the South, and new boys Garstang and Wythenshawe Town occupy the top spots in each division on goal difference. It's now three wins of three for Garstang, who finally emerged victorious with a 4-2 win over Steeton after a ding-dong affair at the Riverside. They share top spot in Division One North with Carlisle City, who also maintained a 100% record after second half goals from Marc Shiel and Ryan Errington earned them a 2-1 win at Chadderton. St Helens Town are in third place, two points off the top although they had to rely on a stoppage time equaliser from Neil Weaver to salvage a point from a 2-2 draw at Bacup Borough, and they were joined on seven points by AFC Blackpool, who beat Atherton LR 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jack Williams 20 minutes from time. Avro are a point behind in fifth place, after a stoppage time winner from Lee O'Brien edged a 3-2 home win over Longridge Town, and Cleator Moor Celtic notched their first win of the season in impressive style, winning 5-1 at home Nelson, Liam Johnston scoring twice. The other games in the division ended with Ashton Town picking up their first points with a 2-0 win at Holker Old Boys, and it was goalless between Shelley and Lower Breck. Division One South has a four way tie at the top, but is headed by Wythenshawe Town on goal difference, after they won 4-0 at FC Oswestry Town. New Mills joined Town on six points after a 5-2 win at home to Cammell Laird 1907, in which a second half hat trick from Aaron Dwyer was the highlight, and two goals from Terrence Butler of Cheadle Heath Nomads earned them a 4-1 win at Eccleshall to also move them onto six points. Abbey Hulton United's 100% record was ended at Wythenshawe Amateurs with a stoppage time winner from Colin Murray clinching a 3-2 win for the home side. There were first wins of the season for Stone Old Alleynians, Jack Tomlinson's 22nd minute goal earning them a 1-0 home victory over St Martins, and Alsager Town, whose 2-1 win over Rylands was sealed with a 75th minute winner by Mazn Amhamed. The other two games in the division, between Cheadle Town and Vauxhall Motors, and Stockport Town and Stone Dominoes, ended in 1 -1 draws. 15

WHO'S PLAYED AT EDGE GREEN ST?

Did

you

know,

Legendary

Liverpool

goalkeeper,

Sander

Westerveld has played at Edge Green Street? Westerveld has appeared twice for the Dutch Masters against the Latics Legends in the Joseph's Goal annual football match. Sander is a big supporter of the charity work we do at Ashton Town and has appeared along side Arjan De Zeeuw, Michael Mols, Kiki Musampa and many more Dutch legends to raise money for charity.

At the first time of asking, Westerveld and the Dutch Masters were unable to stop the “Duke, Nathan Ellington, as the Latics Legends cruised to a 2-0 victory in 2016.

However, the Dutch re-grouped and came back stronger the following year gaining their revenge in thrilling 4-3 victory. Despite this, the former Liverpool stopper was unable to prevent Isidro Diaz scoring with a spectacular chip for the Latics. 16

Sander's 19 year professional career took him to numerous clubs in England, Holland,Spain and Italy before finishing his career at Ajax Cape Town FC in the South African Premier League. Westerveld became the most expensive goalkeeper in England back in 1999 by signing for Liverpool from Vitesse for a fee of £4million making his international debut just 1 week earlier against Brazil. His trademark was his exceptionally long dropkick known as the “Bomb”. Westerveld would entertain fans during the pre match warm up by kicking the ball from his penalty area into the stand behind the opposite goal. Sander was very much a starting figure for Liverpool in their 2000/01 treble winning season helping the club win the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup and leading the club appearances for the season. Westerveld returned from international duty in 2001 to find he had been demoted from Liverpool's number 1 to third choice goalkeeper behind new signings, Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland. Westerveld revived his career by signing for Spanish club, Real Sociedad and finishing second in his second season in Basque country. In July 2005 Westerveld was a free agent and returned to English football with Portsmouth. David Moyes signed him on loan to Everton, who had suffered a mid-season injury crisis with both Richard Wright and Nigel Martyn picking up injuries however he only played twice for the toffees before returning to Portsmouth. After being released from Portsmouth, Westerveld had spells in Spain, Holand and Italy before ending his playing career in South Africa. 17

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and are still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith (Kitman/Physio) whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion. 20

HISTORY OF AFC LIVERPOOL AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008 by 1,000 Liverpool FC fans who had become increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for Premier League matches. The mooted „39th game‟, in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world, proved to be the final straw as it clearly highlighted that those who ran top flight football were more concerned with money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and form a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008, AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the contentious ownership issue at Anfield or as a protest against Liverpool Football Club. It was a response to issues at the top end of football in general. The new club's spokesman, fomer Radio Merseyside commentator, Alan Parry explained: "This has nothing to do with the ownership issue (at Liverpool FC), it's about affordability. I've been going to Anfield since the late Seventies when I was six years old. A season ticket in the Kop cost £45 in 1985, today it's £650, which I know is a lot cheaper than some other Premier League clubs, but in inflation terms Eighties prices should equate to £98 today.” Parry added: "Far from wishing to be estranged from the club, we are hoping that Liverpool will look upon us as a little brother." By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a ground share with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. On 16th July 2008 the club played its first game at the home of Ashton Town AFC, a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town. Mark Crowder scored the Reds first goal with a well taken penalty and a crowd of nearly 600 augured well for the season ahead. The club began its first league season extremely well, beating AFC Darwen 5-0 in their opening competitive game which heralded a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However, they failed to keep this momentum going, eventually finishing a creditable fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a 1-0 victory over Padiham in First Division Trophy Final at Ashton Athletic provided the club‟s first piece of silverware. *Shortened to fit on a page 21

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY The Joseph’s Goal charity was set up in October 2012, by Paul and Emma Kendrick, to raise funds for research into NKH, (Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia), the life-limiting genetic condition that their son, Joseph, was born with. NKH is caused by an excess of glycine on the brain. Joseph was given five days to live but reached his ninth birthday in May this year. He is severely disabled and suffers from seizures. But he is resilient and is a fighter, and we, in turn, are fighting to find better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for NKH, which is very rare, with only fifteen children still surviving in the UK, and less than five hundred worldwide. Joseph’s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, run by a small group of family and friends, who all volunteer their services. No-one is paid. We have received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. In four years we have raised over £340,000, largely from charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. The funds raised have been sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London. Both have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph’s Goal, and trustees of Joseph’s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is, at last, some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away. Since Joseph’s Goal began, Joe has become a little celebrity locally: - in 2013, he was the mascot for Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup Final and was carried out onto the pitch at Wembley by the captain, Emmerson Boyce, which resulted in television appearances on BBC NW, Granada, and Sky News; - in 2013, Joseph’s family were the WISHFM ‘Local Heroes Family of the Year’; - in 2014, Joseph switched on the Xmas Lights in Wigan Town Centre; - in 2014, Joseph’s Goal was recognised by Wigan Council as contributing to the ‘Believe in Wigan” campaign; - and in 2016, Joseph’s Goal was a Finalist in the GM Chamber of Commerce Wigan Business Awards. If you are looking for a charity to support, then please consider our charity, and help Joseph to achieve his Goal.
