WELCOME TO OUR CLUB Good afternoon and welcome to the Scott Rees & Co Stadium for this North West Counties First Divison North tie against Atherton LR. Well despite only having one game called off it seems like an absolute age since our last game. Consistency is a key to progression so here's hoping we can get straight back into it. Today's opponents have changed some what both on and off the field., but again today's game gives us a break from league duties as it's in a cup. As much as a cup game sometimes gives a good break, it can also have a negative like our last game, in the Senior Cup, against Skem. We totally under performed and as much as the league is our priority, I am sure it still came as a shock to all how bad we were. The good thing though was that it wasn't the league and we now have another game like today to shake that out of our system. Sadly we lost a player last week in James Sigsworth. Siggy is some player, however too many times he frustrates. I have no doubt at all that he could turn out to be a world beater, however the time was right to move on. I honestly think we now have better options with the likes of Jesse, Joe Whitt etc. Lastly, and some fantastic news from the ladies last weekend was that they amazingly met Jurgen Klopp !! Klopp was casually walking his dog in Formby, where the girls where playing ! Jurgen was a gent and posed for pictures and chatted a little. Great stuff ! Enjoy the game today and thanks for your support as always, Up the Town Mark Club Chairman

MANAGERS NOTES Good afternoon. Thank you for your attendance today. Since I last wrote in the programme there have been some ups and some downs, beating St Helens Town with 10 men being one of the positive

narrowly 4-3 being the opposite. Last Tuesday we suffered a heavy 6-3 defeat at the hands of Skelmersdale Utd who turned up strong and capitalised

some

individual errors. Everybody had an off night Tuesday and we have the perfect platform to put that right today. We are having a short break from league duties and we are looking forward to coming together and putting in a performance worthy of the Ashton Town badge. Atherton LR are an unknown quantity this term and have drastically improved. They seem to be a club on the rise again and have a good young squad. They have a couple of dynamic players that we will work hard to stop in key areas and we are hoping we, with that in mind, we should have enough to progress.

FORTHCOMING FIRST TEAM FIXTURES 15:00 I hope you enjoy the game today and once 12/10/19 Steeton (H) 19/10/19 Golcar United (H) 15:00 again, as always, thank you for your continued 26/10/19 Atherton LR (A) 15:00 02/11/19 Shelley (H) 15:00 support. Demps. 05/11/19 Chadderton (A) 19:45

www.nwcfl.com

WEEKEND ROU Ten NWCFL games were called off over the weekend, but 20 matches still went ahead on an action-packed matchday - which started on Friday evening. Just the one game went ahead on Friday evening as FC Oswestry Town held off a late Barnton strike to win 2-1 in front of 52 under the lights. Initially, Saturday's rain looked to have held off but a flurry of late postponements meant around a third of games will need to be re-arranged. NWCFL top-flight Rylands were in action but fell to a surprising 2-1 defeat away at mid-table Hanley Town. Whilst, high flyers 1874 Northwich narrowed the game to four points following a slender 1-0 win against Skelmersdale United. Avro got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win against Squires Gate, meanwhile, Barnoldswick Town and Padiham recorded wins, 2-0 against Litherland REMYCA and away at Burscough 1-0 respectively. Lastly in the NWCFL Premier Division, Winsford United recorded their first win since mid-August beating Ashton Athletic 3-2. In the First Division North, third place Shelley narrowed the gap on the top two who were postponed by just a single point though - as they drew 1-1 with fifth-placed Daisy Hill.

UNDUP 28/9/19 Holker Old Boys are up to fourth after a narrow 1-0 win over Atherton LR, whilst Steeton moved off the bottom of the table beating fellow strugglers Pilkington 2-0. Shelley and Daisy Hill thrashed out a 1-1 score draw, whilst Bacup Borough travelled back home with all three points - beating St Helens Town 2-1. AFC Liverpool and Golcar United were level on games played, points and goal difference before and after their game as they drew 2-2 at L23, whilst AFC Darwen and Nelson drew 1 -1. A late Callum Birdsall goal secured a vital point for Cleator Moor Celtic away at mid-table Emley AFC. In the First Division South, third-place West Didsbury & Chorlton kept up the pressure at the top of the pile with a fine win over fellow promotion contenders Cammell Laird 1907 - coming from behind to win 2-1. Meanwhile, Eccleshall recorded a fine 3-0 win away at Alsager Town, Cheadle Town got back to winning ways in the league with a 4-1 home win against Abbey Hulton United and Stockport Town and Ellesmere Rangers drew 2-2 - with the latter's Tawanda Melsui equalising deep into injury time. Fifth-placed Abbey Hey narrowly beat Stone Old Alleynians, and finally, New Mills won for the first time this season - Nathan Webb and Darren McKnight on hand to guide them to a 2-0 away win at Wythenshawe Amateurs.

ASHTON TOWN LADIES

Formby Ladies v Ashton Town Ladies Sunday 28th September 2019

MEET JURGEN KLOPP During the half time talk Ashton Townâ€&#x;s attention was drawn to a tall fella walking his dog and minding his own business, when we realised that in fact it was Jurgen Klopp!!! The coach abandoned the team talk so that the girls could meet Jurgen! The girls were beyond excited and mobbed Jurgen who was a really nice fella and only too happy to have photos taken! When the excitement and shock of meeting Jurgen finally subsided the game continued with Ashton equalising and making it 2-2. Formby took the lead once again, however after a penalty was awarded to us after a foul on Caitlin. Hanna took a great penalty and the game finally ended 3-3.

On this day 5th October 1946 On 5th October 1946 following a £13,000 transfer move from Bradford Park Avenue to Newcastle United Len Shackleton made his debut for the Magpies in a Division two game versus Newport County in front of a St James' Park crowd of 52,137. Newcastle proceeded to equal the highest score in Football League history with a 13-0 victory with new-boy Shackleton scoring six of them. What a debut for Shackleton, who was known as the „Clown Prince of Soccer‟. 5th October 2014 North West Counties League First Division South side Cheadle Town had their moment of fame on this day in 2014. They were the warm-up opposition for the Russian Under-19 side who were preparing for a European Championship qualifying tournament in Northern Ireland. Being chosen for the game was impressive enough but they never imagined the Twitter in a frenzy that followed the result of the game which Cheadle lost 22-0.

WHO’S PLAYED AT EDGE GREEN ST Lee Andrew Martin was born in Hyde, Cheshire on 5th February 1968. He played with Manchester United, Celtic and Bristol Rovers, among others together with representing England at U21 level. Martin started his career in the Manchester United youth system. In 1990, he scored the only goal in the FA Cup final replay against Crystal Palace. This was one of just two goals Martin scored in his entire united career. The other goal, his first, came 16 months earlier in a 3–1 defeat of West Ham at Upton Park. Martin played in 32 out of 38 league games in the cup winning 1989– 90 campaign, but managed just 14 league games the following season as Clayton Blackmore established himself as United's regular left -back, with Denis Irwin joining as a right-back, and Martin struggled with a back injury. Martin failed to make the United squad for the 1991 European Cup Winners Cup final or the 1992 League Cup Final. He did, however, collect a European Super Cup winner's medal on 19 November 1991 when he featured in their 1–0 triumph over Red Star Belgrade at Old Trafford, when he was substituted in the 71st minute in favour of Ryan Giggs. Martin failed to make a single league appearance in 1992–93 season as United won the first FA Premier League title. His final league appearance came on 23 October 1993 in a 1–0 Premier League win over Everton at Goodison Park, as United were on course for retaining the league title. They also went on to win the FA Cup that season. 1993–94 saw the introduction of squad numbers in the Premier League, and Martin made one appearance in the number 21 shirt. His final competitive appearance for United was on 27 October 1993 in a 5–1 home win over Leicester City in the third round of the League Cup. Towards the end of his time at Manchester United, Martin regularly captained the reserve side. Martin played a total of 108 games and scored two goals for United before he left Old Trafford in January 1994 to join Celtic, where he suffered a broken leg within months of his arrival. He played just 19 times in the league in more than two years as Celtic failed to overhaul Rangers, who were league champions of Scotland in each of three seasons that Martin spent north of the border. Celtic's only major honour during Martin's time there was the Scottish FA Cup in 1995, but he didn't make the squad for that game. He finally left Celtic in 1996 and signed for Bristol Rovers, from where he later had a loan spell with Huddersfield Town. He retired from professional football in 1998. Martin then moved to the semi-professional League of Wales team Bangor City, Glossop North End and then to NEWI Cefn Druids in 2006. He retired from football in 2008, and currently works with young people helping them to gain qualifications, Access College and get apprenticeships or employment in the West Cheshire area. He also helps with the coaching of the Chester FC under 16's youth team which he combines with working for Manchester United Television at Old Trafford. Lee Martin‟s one and only appearance at Edge Green Street came on 25th May 2019 when he appeared in the Manchester United Legends team who drew one all with the Joseph‟s Goal Latics Legends before losing out in a penalty shoot out to decide the tie.

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion.

HISTORY OF ATHERTON LR FC Laburnum Rovers were founded in 1956 by Joe Riley as an under 14s side and after a difficult first season in the local Briarcroft Junior League, they went on to enjoy much success in League and Cup competitions. Joe was persuaded to carry on into Senior football and after a brief spell in the Leigh League the club joined the Bolton Combination. More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented further progress so a farmers field was found and despite footpath criss-crossing and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved into its new ground and were able to take their place in Division One of the Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air raid shelters they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did the ground was renamed from Greendale to Crilly Park. In the summer of 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was successful. A stipulation of the League was that the towns name had to be in the clubs title, so links with the past were retained with the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers. In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in division two until the league was reorganised in 1987 when ongoing ground improvements saw them placed in division one. 1989 saw floodlights erected and the club enter the FA Cup for the first time, while in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. Towards the end of 1990/91 season Dave Morris took over as team manager and it was the start of the best period in the clubs history. In 1992/93 the club won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and also won the League Championship Trophy. Promotion to the Unibond League was denied them because of grading requirements, but undaunted the club repeated their double the following season as well as reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase. This time the club was promoted to the Unibond League. Two good seasons saw steady progress, but then financial troubles struck and the club was relegated for the first time in its history. Three seasons of struggle back in the North West Counties League culminated with the relegation to Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager saw a remarkable turnaround in form and nine successive victories helped the club win back promotion to Division One at the first attempt. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Dennis Haslem took over as managers after having to rebuild the team from scratch, they secured Division One football for another season. Dennis moved on in the summer and Ian Street joined the club. A period of stability and success followed but at the end of 2004/05 season Foster and Street left the club to be replaced by Mike Lester and Darren Ford, They set about building a new squad but, in February 2006, Lester and Ford resigned sparking a difficult time for the club on the pitch with no less than six managers at the helm over the next two years. The most successful period came in spring 2007 under Roy Sweeney when the club moved away from the relegation zone after doubling its points total from 21 to 42 in the final two months of the season. Sweeney resigned in December 2007, with Malcolm Anderton taking temporary charge for four months until ex-LR player and Leigh RMI manager Stuart Humphreys was brought in to ensure the club retained its top division status and it was fortunate that 21st place was enough. With changes elsewhere in the pyramid system meaning LR avoided relegation at the end of 07/08 season, the club brought in Dave Hughes as the new manager with a brief to keep the team in the Premier Division while the club was reorganised behind the scenes. Hughes brought in a very experienced coaching team and set about building a squad which has proved very successful. The season ended with one of the highest league placings for several years, victory in the Goldline Trophy and another Reebok appearance in the Hospital Cup final. This season the side had a promising opening to the campaign recording another FA Cup giant-killing before injuries took a severe toll, with the team battling in the relegation dogfight. Victory once again in the Goldline Trophy Final gave the team enough belief to collect the points they needed to stay in the Premier Division.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY Joseph Michael Kendrick was born on the 9th May 2009, after an unremarkable pregnancy at 42 weeks. After his birth, although Joe was very quiet, he was thought to be otherwise healthy by the doctors. However, over the next couple of days, Joe rapidly deteriorated, and fell into a coma. Joseph was immediately taken to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where they began to test him to find the cause of his lethargy and low muscle tone. After six days, the Kendrick family found out that Joseph had a severe form of a very rare genetic disorder known as NKH. The Kendricks received the devastating news that Joseph was unlikely to live past 10-days old, and almost certainly wouldn‟t reach his first birthday. Luckily for the Kendrick‟s, they were surrounded by a very supportive family who helped get them through the dark first few days. Paul, Emma, and the family waited every day around Joseph‟s cot, praying that he would wake up, open his eyes or cry. The family was informed of a special medicine (sodium benzoate), which may help Joseph to wake up, and remove some of the glycine from his brain, but not from his cerebral fluid. On day 13, to the relief of his family, Joseph finally „woke up‟, started to cry and act more like a „normal‟ little baby. Joe‟s parents were able to change his nappies, feed him through his tube and cuddle him, which meant everything to Paul, Emma and the family. Paul and Emma were told that he was very jerky due to a seizure called a myoclonic jerk, and if he lived, they would turn into other types of seizures. Joe managed to fight through the horrible days in hospital and was able to go home for the first time with his family around a month after his birth. Paul and Emma had a very worrying year waiting for him to fall very unwell as they were told by doctors and to stop breathing, but thankfully Joe never did. Joe is doing really well despite his condition. Joe still has frequent seizures but takes medicine to help control them. Having ate orally until he was 4-years-old, Joe now has a gastrostomy for milk and medicines which is much easier to feed him through. Joe still manages tasters of food when he‟s well, and really enjoys yoghurt and ice cream in the summer months. Joe is also a very proud big brother to Sam and Tom and is doing really well at school. Joe‟s parents are very proud of their “strong and resilient” little boy and are proud on how well he has done to exceed all expectations. Joe made it very clear to his parents in showing that he wants to fight all the way, and his parents were inspired from this to fight on his behalf to help create awareness of this heart-breaking condition, find better treatment for him, and one day find a cure for NKH. Parents, Paul and Emma Kendrick formed the Joseph’s Goal charity in 2012 and have raised over £700,000 since their foundation just seven years ago. Joseph‟s Goal are fighting to find better treatments and hopefully, a cure for NKH, with raised funds being sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London for further research into the condition. Both doctors have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is finally some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away.
