Welcome

to our club Good afternoon and welcome to Profiles Park for this North West Counties North tie against Bacup Borough. First of all please let me thank many a person for our last game against Bury. Forget the result, the occasion was magnificent. Brent's team today will be no roll overs. They are an excellent side who will battle just as much as us as they have eyes on the playoffs, especially with Brent already purchasing the Wembley bus ! As a club we are used to catering for, and welcoming 60-80 fans. On Tuesday we had over 1000 but it went amazingly, each and every volunteer being key cogs in an exceptional evening of togetherness and organisation.

Thank you again to all whom have attended today as I am sure it will be another cold one. Enjoy the game, Mark - Club Chairman

On the pitch we wasn't far off it at all bar a mad 8 minutes. We really are now seeing the management teams work come to fruition. All I ask as a basic requirement is to work hard, and to chase and fight for every ball. If that is given, then we have a very good chance of winning as our capability is not under question.

@northernpromise

Notes from the MANAGER Well firstly I would just like to thank all the fans for the support you gave the team on Tuesday night. The result wasn’t what we wanted but we gave it a good go. I thought for the first 30mins we were in control and playing some good football.

Tuesday night‟s game though was about more than the result for me, It was about seeing where this group of players are currently at. I have to say that they showed that they are definitely moving in the right direction. This afternoon will be another tough test against Bacup, they are a well organised side and are having a really strong season. So the lads will need to put the same effort as they did Tuesday evening.

Then a lapse in concentration and they score to go one up. What followed was a crazy 10 minutes when the lads unfortunately switched off making a couple more silly mistakes and against a top side like Bury if you make a mistake they will punish you which they certainly did that. I remained confident going out for the second half and have to say again we dominated the half with their keeper being forced into making some great saves but unfortunately that bit of luck we needed just didn‟t happen. That been said I have no complaints about the result and wish Bury all the best for the remainder of the season.

I am confident that if the group apply themselves in the same way as the last few games that we can get the right result from the game and build on our recent improved performances. Thanks again for all your support. Biggs

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN a Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted to Div 1 in their 1st season. However, quickly relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16th. Towards the end of 1910/11 season the club withdrew from the league and fixtures were taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League. They played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958.

The founder was a persistent man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road due to land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in

Bryn until 1964 when the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street which was previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers.

This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt. Then in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built.

association football club section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare, Joanne and more recently, Keith whose dedication and work rate is second to none on quite often a day-to-day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe (pic below), who has on and off, over the years worked behind the

The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league ever since with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett R.I.P 5/5/20 (right pic far right) and Jimmy Cahill (pic below far right). The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years‟ service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James scenes painting, digging or mending often Horner made a massive boost to the club without the right resources for the with the long overdue formation of a Junior job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive.

HISTORY OF Bac Bacup Borough Football Club was established in 1879. Their first match to take place at their current Brian Boys West View Stadium was not until 1889 when one of the founder members of the English Football League Accrington Stanley played there in front of over 1,000 spectators. Bacup‟s proudest achievement was winning the Lancashire Combination Championship in the 1946/47 season, this along with finishing runners up after losing to Marine 2-1 in the Lancashire Combination Cup Final. 1972/73 season the club finished runners up in the League, losing out on goal average despite scoring 101 goals. In 1974/75 they reached the Lancashire Junior Cup Final losing 1-0 against Lancaster City, this despite famous victories against Formby, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool, and Morecambe. In the last ever Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup Final Bacup were beaten 1-3 by Caernarfon Town in a two-legged Final. In 1982 Bacup Borough became founder members of the North West Counties League, this following the amalgamation of the Cheshire League & the Lancashire Combination. In the 1987/88 season Bacup had to apply for re-election following finishing bottom of the Second Division. In the 1988 /89 season under the Management of Gary Warburton the club finished Runners up in Division Two and also finished Runners Up in the Lamot Pils Trophy, they also the same season reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup and due to the Leagues re-organisation the club started the 1989 /90 season as a First Division Club. However, in the1994 /95 season Bacup Borough were relegated back to the Second Division & did struggle both on and off the field. In September of the 1997/98 season with no points on the board and following a humiliating 0-10 defeat by Tetley Walker this prompted the Committee to part company with their then Manager. This then made way for the appointment of the former Doncaster Rovers Assistant

Manager, Bury F.C Youth Team Coach, Accrington Stanley Director of Football, & Rossendale Utd & Glossop North End Manager Brent Peters to take over as Manager, a position he has held ever since. Brent‟s early record of achievement saw the club finish the 1997/98 season in 14th position, climbing in 1998 /99 to 11th position before in 1999/00 they finished 5th in the league, the clubs highest league position in over ten years. In Season 2000/01 the club reached the Second Division Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Squires Gate. Brent‟s greatest achievement came at the end of the 2002/03 season when he guided the club to the Championship of the North West Counties League First Division, the first major success for the club in 56 years. This brought Brent Three Manager of the Month Awards and The Manager of The Year Award. Season 2003/04, Bacup‟s first season following the First Division Championship the club finished 14th in the Premier Division and did win the North West Counties League Challenge Cup at Southport‟s Haig Avenue Ground by beating Newcastle Town 3-0. Other cup runs saw Borough as NWCFL Challenge Cup Quarter Finalists in 2004/05 and Lancashire FA Co-operative Trophy Quarter Finalists in 2007/08. They finished in 8th Position in the NWCFL Premier Division in the 2008/09 Season. June 14th 2004 brought another land mark for the club when Bacup‟s late Secretary Frank Manning celebrated not only his 70th Birthday but also 50yrs in the game of which well over 40 years have been spent in administration at his beloved Bacup Borough F.C, This achievement was recognised by Frank being presented with a gold award on behalf of the Football Association by Mr Jim Kenyon the Secretary of the Lancashire Football Association. This achievement brought Frank the position of Chairman of the club, a post he held until accepting the position of President of Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC at the re-branding

cup borough FC on June 17th 2013. It was a sad start to the 2011/2012 season with the sudden passing away of Kenneth Peters on the 15th June 2011 Kenneth was also the club president and father of our manager. On the field of play further success was to come with more silverware, this following a comprehensive 50 victory over Maine Road in the NWCFL Challenge Cup Final which was played at the Tameside Stadium Ashton in front of a big crowd, the team was captained by Davey Luker. The 2012/2013 season proved to be another difficult time at the club following the sad deaths of people dearly close to the club. Four came in the month of October 12 from which the biggest shock was 27 year old player Bryan Herbert. On the pitch the team once again did well by getting to yet another cup final and this time it was the Lancashire FA Cooperative Trophy Final played at the Reebok Stadium at Bolton. Despite playing a team from two leagues above, Bacup gave a very good account of themselves against team from the Evo Stick Premier Division, AFC Fylde ran out 2-0 winners. June 17th 2013 Bacup Borough officially adopted the title of Rossendale; this came about following the sad demise of Rossendale United FC, thus leaving Bacup Borough as the Rossendale Valley‟s most senior football club. They were now the sole flag bearers of the Rossendale Valley and, for the commercial side, it made sense to add „Rossendale‟ to the club‟s name making the club Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC. The new name also brings with it a newly designed crest to form its very own identity, with a plan for progression in place and the words, Prosperity Through Endeavour‟ prominently featured. The 2013/2014 season was a nail-biter right until the last game, but with BARB‟s place in the Pemier Division secured the club is ready to progress with its ambitious plans as Rossendale‟s number one football club. Sadly the 2014/2015 season did not turn out as we had wished. Injuries

oroughfc.co.uk

and other serious problems off the pitch resulted in more pressing important matters that Manager Brent Peters had to deal with, resulting in the team being relegated from the Premier Division.A decision was taken to relaunch Bacup Borough Football Club from the start of the 2015/2016 season. The historic crest was brought back and there were exciting developments on and off the pitch. Among those was the creation of two junior teams – an U15 team and an U18 team – who competed under the banner of Bacup Borough FC and had excellent seasons; both teams winning trophies. Season 2015/2016 was a season of rebuilding and the first team finished the season very strongly reaching the Division One play-off final, only to lose 2 nil in extra time of what had been a hard fought and evenly balanced game. 2016/17 was the start of a rebuilding programme with a further introduction within our Youth Development with an u21 team this was followed in 2017/18 season with the introduction of an under 9s team, the Youth structure started to pay off with the senior team introducing several boys into the senior side.2018/19 Manager Brent Peters started with probably his youngest ever squad with the average age being 21years old, the boys contributed to a very good season finishing 8th in the League, Semi Finalist in the First Division Trophy, and winning the Team of the Month for April with five games, two home draws and then three back-to-back away wins. The last two seasons have been highly disruptive to football. The club now has a fit and promising young squad who are keen to carry on from where they left off last season, challenging for promotion. Finally, it is worth mentioning that our manager, Brent Peters is acknowledged by the BBC as the longest serving club football manager in the world. He has been at the helm of Bacup Borough for almost 24 years, having clocked up well over 1.000 games.

He played in the 2000 Football League Cup Final as Tranmere lost 2–1 to Leicester City at Wembley on 27 February 2000. On 4 July 2000 he moved to Portugal, joining Portuguese Liga club Sporting Clube de Portugal on a free transfer. The following season he made 27 league appearances scoring seven goals as Wigan won promotion to the Premier League.

After starting the 2005–06 season in the first team, he dropped out of favour halfway through the campaign and was allowed to leave, despite being seen as an ongoing squad player by Paul Jewell. On 23 March 2006 he joined Burnley on loan for the rest of the 2005–06 season, making his debut the following day against Norwich City. Jimmy Bullard, a Wigan Athletic player, said that all the players wore black armbands when Mahon left the club Mahon played for the Republic of Ireland national under-19 football team in the 1996 UEFA European Under-18 Football Championship finals in Luxembourg and made his senior international debut on 26 April 2000 as a 54th-minute substitute in a 1–0 friendly defeat to Greece at Lansdowne Road, Dublin. On this day 15th JAN 15th January 1958 An historic day in Belfast where goals from Jimmy McIlroy (Burnley) and Wilbur Cush (Leeds) brought Northern Ireland a 21 victory over mighty Italy in a World Cup qualifier. It meant that Northern Ireland qualified for their first World Cup finals while two-time World Cup winners Italy failed for the first time to get through the qualifying competition for the World Cup. But it might have been very different. There had been a previous attempt to stage that qualifier, on December 4th 1957. Sadly though the match referee, Hungarian Istvan Zolt, was fogbound in London and was unable to reach Belfast for the match. In his absence there was no agreement on an alternative ref and with a 53,000 crowd expected calling off the fixture was not an alternative so the match was downgraded from a World Cup match to a friendly. The paying public were far from pleased with that and the police had to deal with a number of problems with an unhappy crowd. But the match ended 22 and had World Cup points been at stake it would have been Italy who would have gone to the World Cup finals. As it turned out it was Northern Ireland who went to those finals in Sweden, amazingly along with England, Scotland and Wales. Brazil went on to win the World Cup that year.

15th January 1959 Second Division Liverpool were on the wrong end of an FA Cup shock, losing 2-1 away to Southern League side Worcester City. 15th January 1997 Newcastle United played their first match under new manager Kenny Dalglish, defeating Charlton Athletic in an FA Cup Third Round replay at St James‟ Park. Dalglish lasted until the start of the 1998/99 season with his time at the club being described as 'the only part of Kenny Dalglish's career that came anywhere near failure.' 15th January 2000 Ipswich Town defender Gary Croft was wearing an extra bit of kit when he came on as a 71st minute substitute in a First Division match against Swindon Town at Portman Road on Saturday 15th January 2000, an electronic tag on his ankle. It was the first time in a League match that a tag had been worn and was the result of him being released after one month of a four month prison sentence he had received for driving while disqualified and perverting the course of justice. He also had a curfew from 7pm to 7am so it was a case of afternoon kick offs only until his punishment was over.

MATCH REPORT V On Tuesday 11th January 2022 Town welcomed League Leaders and Phoenix club Bury AFC to Profiles Park for the rearranged League game following the game being postponed an hour before kick off last time it had been scheduled due to a waterlogged pitch.

In front of a bumper crowd of 1066, a record for Town in a League game played here at Profiles Park, the team gave a good account of themselves against a very well drilled and organised Bury side. Ashton had a couple of opportunities early on and were

conceding a further two goals sending them into the half time interval trailing by three but it was by far a true reflection of how the first half had gone.

The lads came out for the second period and showed their true character, more than matching our high flying visitors all over the pitch. Unfortunately Town where unable to breakdown the Bury defence though until the 90th minute of the game when Liam Keenan rose to head home a consolation goal for Ashton, hopefully Liam‟s first of many more goals for the club. Some hard working performances were put in right through the team on the night, with

FOOTBALL BOOK REVIEW John Barnes spent the first dozen years of his life in Jamaica before moving to the UK with his family in 1975. Six years later he was a professional footballer, distinguishing himself for Watford, Liverpool and England, and in the process becoming this country's most prominent black player. When he was 20 years old in 1984, John Barnes scored one of England‟s greatest goals when he lit up the Maracanã by slaloming though the Brazil defence before he stroked the ball into the net. Barnes mentions that game in his book as when travelling to Brazil for the game some National Front supporters were on the plane with the England team flying to Rio. One of them was sitting just behind the team because they were on a commercial flight. In those days they didn‟t even fly business. These supporters were funded by the NF to follow England. You would see the National Front flag draped over their seats in the Maracanã. The plane was also full of football journalists and no one said a word. “Fast-forward 10 years and suddenly antiracism programmes are starting and those same people who said nothing in 1984 are

shouting from the rooftops. It‟s the same today. There is lots of talk whenever there is „a racial incident‟ but nothing really changes. Have you seen on Sky Sports that every time Gary Neville comes on in an anti -racism advert he says: „I‟m in the fight against racism.‟ For the next six days we‟re going to be in until the next big football match. But what about next month and next year? Nothing happens until the next incident when they go: „This is terrible. We must do something.‟” Asks Barnes in this very thought provoking and mind focusing book. Barnes is now an articulate and captivating social commentator on a broad range of issues, and in The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism he tackles head-on the issues surrounding prejudice with his trademark intelligence and authority. By vividly evoking his personal experiences, and holding a mirror to this country's past, present and future, Barnes provides a powerful and moving testimony. The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism will help to inform and advance the global conversation around society's ongoing battle with the awful stain of prejudice.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY Joseph‟s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, ran by a small group of family and friends who all volunteer their services. The charity has received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. Joseph‟s Goal have raised most of their funds through charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. Ashton Town AFC now host an annual charity legends football match, after the huge success of the inaugural match in May 2015, with the Latics Legends thumping a Hollyoaks XI 10-0 with a sensational performance. Town chairman, Mark Hayes was touched by Joe‟s story and has been actively involved in the charity‟s fundraising efforts for several years. This years event is the fifth annual Joseph‟s Goal legends game and is set to be another classic with the likes of Bryan Robson, Emmerson Boyce and Arjan De Zeeuw gracing the Ashton Town turf. Since Josephs story was shared publicly, the 10-year-old has become a little star in the local area and recognised throughout the United Kingdom for his fantastic story in defying
