WELCOME TO OUR CLUB Good afternoon, and welcome to all to this North West Counties First Division North game against Bacup Borough. Obviously this week has been a bit of a media circus since the announcement of our new signing, but since then sods law we have had allsorts of weather, so I really hope that you read this as the original fixture, and Pascal Chimbonda 's debut. I always knew that a signing of this calibre would make the news, but even I am shocked at the coverage that it has got, hitting the top newspaper in France, and even TV late on Tuesday night. Lets make this clear though, this isnt just a publicity stunt, Pascal can still play, and the experience that he will bring to our squad will be priceless. For me the signing comes at a perfect time, our squad has just stabilised, we have quarter final coming up, and this will give the of lads a great boost to have a push in the final stages of us back in the Counties. Bacup will be no push over, and I am sure Brent will see this as an opportunity of a win for them will see them steal some headlines. Our game against them back in November was a frustrating one, and we were on the receiving end of a 3-2 defeat so its a great opportunity to get revenge on that loss. Thank you so much as always for your support through the turnstiles, and if this is your first game here due to Pascal, then welcome, and hereâ€&#x;s hoping it wont be your last. Onwards and upwards as always. Mark Club Chairman 3

A FEW WORDS FROM THE MANAGER Good Afternoon, Thank you all for attending this league clash against Bacup Borough FC. Bacup will provide a tough test today and if anything goes by the last time out, it will be one that goes right to the 90th minute. Unfortunately for Ashton we fell victim of 90th minute winner in a game that we deserved a lot more from. The players are all aware of what we need to do and will be ready to put that right in today's game. News travels fast and today we will have a new player in the ranks in Pascal Chimbonda. We are all thoroughly excited to have him on board and we are looking forward to seeing the outcome of the positive impact he is sure to have in the dressing room on the field of play. In terms of new players we have recently signed Anthony Shinks from Northwich Victoria FC, Anthony Potts from West Didsbury FC, Charlie Duke from Skelmersdale FC and Luke Edwards from St Helens FC. All of these players have made a great mark on the squad, managing to improve the squad with their experience and qualities whilst chipping in with a few goals along the way. We are starting to build really nicely towards the end of the season. Todayâ€&#x;s squad has been a hard one to pick, mainly down to the amount of players we have in our ranks. Injuries are no longer a concern and recent performances have been good, but the squad today will sure put up a strong battle against what is going to be a decent Bacup Borough Side. Thank you for attending today's game, your support goes a long way. Best Wishes, Dave Dempsey 5

HALLMARK SECURITY Although wintry weather took its toll on four games on Saturday, the rest of the programme survived to deliver another day of talking points and key moments. The Premier Division continues to be headed by City of Liverpool, whose 4-2 win at Hanley Town maintained their 14 point lead at the top of the table. It wasn't plain sailing for the Purps though, with the teams being tied at 2-2 early in the second half, but goals from Jack Hazlehurst and Craig Cairns in the final half hour clinched the win. Bootle continue to pursue the Purps in second place, with their 2-1 win over Congleton Town also meaning that the Bears dropped to third place. After Anthony Hickey's 12th minute penalty was cancelled out by Dean Warburton's leveller just before the hour, Steven Jones struck the Bucks' winner 12 minutes from time. Barnoldswick Town are in fourth place after picking up a point in a 1-1 draw at Winsford United, with Clayton McDonald putting the Blues ahead and Sean Cookson equalising for Barlick two minutes before half time. Runcorn Town are now level on points with Barlick, rounding off a good week with a 4-1 win at Charnock Richard. Harry Brazel, Shaun Tuck and Harry Freedman set Town on the road to victory with three first half goals and Simon Thelwell's 88th minute penalty rounded off the win, although Charnock's leading scorer Carl Grimshaw inevitably managed to get on the scoresheet right at the death. Goals from Adam Gilchrist, Joshua Nicholson and Matthew Reid earned Ashton Athletic a 3 -0 win at home to Litherland REMYCA that moved them into sixth place, one place ahead of Northwich Victoria, who claimed derby bragging rights with a 3-2 win over 1874 Northwich. The teams were level at the break with Andrew Fitzgerald opening the scoring for Vics and Sam Hare replying for 1874 on the stroke of half time. But goals from Robert Doran and Harvey Whyte put Vics in the driving seat and on the way to their ever win against their local rivals, although Scott McGowan reduced the arrears with a penalty. Dean Ing scored twice in Squires Gate's 4-1 win over bottom of the table Abbey Hey, and Thomas Horner's 55th minute winner ensured that West Didsbury & Chorlton moved three points clear of the drop zone thanks to their 2-1 win over Silsden at Brookburn Road. The other game between Whitchurch Alport and Padiham at Yockings Park ended goalless. The First Division North continues to be headed by Longridge Town, with Jay Hart, Richie Allen and Thomas Ince on target in the 3-1 win over Chadderton at the Mike Riding Ground. 12
BY IAN TEMPLEMAN ww
WEEKEND ROUND UP Avro remain on their tails though, and remain eight points behind with two games in hand after their 2-0 win at St Helens Town, Ryan Harrison and Louis Potts getting the goals. Lower Breck moved into fourth place with a 2-1 win at Nelson, although they left it late as they trailed to a Kieran Demaine goal for Nelson with eight minutes remaining. But a Jamie Henders equaliser and a 90th minute winner from Leon Arnaslam ensured the points headed back to Merseyside. Prestwich Heys lost ground after going down 2-0 at home to Shelley, a Craig Billington opener and an own goal sending the Yorkshiremen to victory. Carlisle City are now level on points on Heys after their 3-0 home win over Atherton LR, Rob McCartney scoring twice to take his tally for the season to 30. That result keeps LR rooted to the bottom of the table, and Daisy Hill joined them in the relegation zone after going down 3-0 at home to Holker Old Boys, John-Paul Stanway scoring twice for the Stags. AFC Blackpool beat AFC Darwen in a game that was goalless for the first hour, and the other two games in the division ended in 3-3 draws. Shaun Sailor rescued a point for Garstang at home to Cleator Moor Celtic with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, while a penalty from Anthony Shinks eight minutes from the end meant Ashton Town ended all square at Steeton. The twists and turns at the top of the First Division South continued, with just six points separating the top six and Rylands are still on top despite going down 3-0 at home to Vauxhall Motors. Haydn Cooper, Ben Holmes and Joe Brandon were on target for the Motormen who moved into fifth place, just four points off the top. Abbey Hulton United are now just one point behind Rylands, their 4-1 win at St Martins achieved with goals from Curtis Price, Jonathan Beaumont, Sam Luke and Dylan Bath. Stone Old Alleynians remain in fourth place, despite going down 3-2 at home to Sandbach United, for whom Harry Cain struck the winner in the 88th minute. Maine Road made it three wins in a row, although it took a goal in the last minute from Finn Thompson to earn them a 21 win over FC Oswestry Town, and in the other game Alsager Town and Barnton shared a 1-1 draw. 13

WELCOME TO EDGE GREEN STREET PASCAL CHIMBONDA This afternoon we welcome back to Edge Green Street our latest but probably most historic signing, former Wigan Athletic and French Wold Cup International squad player from 2006, Pascal Chimbonda. After weeks of negotiations leading up to and into the January transfer window, club Chairman Mark Hayes has managed to pull off an historic coup and secure the signing of Pascal on an initial short term deal. Pascal Chimbonda is no stranger to Edge Green Street having appeared as a member of the Latics Legends team that beat Manchester City Legends in a drawn game that was decided by kicks from the penalty mark for the annual Joseph‟s Goal Charity football game in May 2018. Since making the first connection ahead of last year‟s charity game our Chairman has negotiated the deal which today sees Pascal go straight into the match day squad to face our visitors from Bacup Borough. Speaking on the day of Pascal signing for the club, manager Dave Dempsey said, “We are all extremely excited to have Pascal join our group, and we are sure he will give the players and club a like a sense of excitement in the coming weeks. We can only thank our chairman for getting this one over the door for us.” On the same day that Chimbonda‟s former Tottenham Hotspur team mate of 2007, Kevin Prince Boateng joined Barcelona and former Chelsea and England international Ashley Cole joined Derby County the headlines were shared and arguably stolen by Pascal‟s signing for Ashton Town of the North West Counties Division One North. Speaking about his historic transfer coup club chairman Mark Hayes said, “Pascal‟s signing comes at a perfect time as our squad is just settling after getting used to North West Counties football again following our one season in the Cheshire League. It is a huge boost for the club, and one that I hope Wigan Athletic fans will come and support.” Welcome to Ashton Town Pascal we hope that you enjoy your time with our club and that it is both an enjoyable and prosperous one, however long it may be for. 14

WHO'S PLAYED AT James Barry Knowles was born on 25th April 1959 in Wigan. Heâ€&#x;s a former footballer who played as a left full-back. He most notably played for Wigan Athletic between 1984 and 1988, and was part of the team that won the Football League Trophy in 1985. Knowles started his career at Southport and made his debut on 28th August 1978 in a Home tie against South Liverpool. Knowles went on to play 41 games during that season which increased to 63 games during the 1979/80 playing season, during which he scored his one and only goal for Southport FC on 27th October 1979 when the opponents were once again South Liverpool. He left Southport at the end of that season joining Runcorn where he was a member of the 1980-81Northern Premier League winning team that completed the double by winning the Northern Premier League Challenge cup at Manchester Cityâ€&#x;s Maine Road ground beating Marine AFC 4-3. Knowlesthen moved onto Barrow AFC from where he subsequently joined Wigan Athletic in October 1984.As previously stated he was then one of the Football League Trophy winning team, a tournament then known as the Freight Rover Trophy, with Wigan beating Brentford by a score of 3-1 at the old Wembley Stadium on 1st June 1985. The Wigan team that day was managed by Bryan Hamilton and consisted of Roy Tunks, Alex Cribley, Barry Knowles, Steve Walsh, (Captain) Colin Methven, David Lowe, Tony Kelly, Graham Barrow, Gary Langley, Gary Bennet, Mike Newell and substitutes Paul Jewell and Warren Aspinall. The Wigan goals on the day were scored by Newell, Kelly and Lowe against a Brentford team managed by Frank McLintock, ex Arsenal and including Chris Kamara, now of Sky Sports fame. 16

T EDGE GREEN ST? One little known fact about Barry Knowles is how close he came to signing for Liverpool FC during the 1986-87 playing season. With the current Liverpool Left Back Jim Beglin suffering a bad break to his leg early in 1987, the then Liverpool Manager, none other than Kenny Dalglish, made a special trip to the Wigan Athletic v Leeds United sixth round FA Cup tie, played at Springfield Park on Sunday 15th March 1987 to run the rule over Knowles. Unfortunately for Barry the game didn‟t go too well for Wigan who lost 2-0 to a Leeds United side who owed a lot to a string of fine early saves by their keeper Mervyn Day and with Knowles going on to pick up a yellow card during the game and Liverpool‟s interest in signing him sadly dwindling. Knowles left Wigan Athletic in 1988 signing for Altrincham where he finished his playing career. After retiring from playing Barry Knowles went on to work as a youth coach at Blackpool FC before taking up a role with the Football League and subsequently the Premier League as a player talent scout. On 17 February 2015 he was appointed as head of youth development of Bharat FC in the I-League, India joining ex Wolverhampton Wanderers player and Bharat first team coach Stuart Watkiss at the club and in July 2016, he joined DSK Shivajians as part of their youth development programme, before returning to the UK and settle back in the Wigan area. Knowles has been a visitor to Edge Green Street for two of the recent Joseph‟s goal Latics Legends game when he was part of the back room staff for the Latics team that took on the Dutch Masters in 2017 prior to actually appearing in the Latics Legends side against the Manchester City Legends in May 2018.

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and are still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith (Kitman/Physio) whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion. 20

HISTORY OF BACUP BOROUGH FC Bacup Borough Football Club was established in 1879. Their first match to take place at their current Brian Boys West View Stadium was not until 1889 when one of the founder members of the English Football League Accrington Stanley played there in front of over 1,000 spectators. Bacup‟s proudest achievement was winning the Lancashire Combination Championship in the 1946/47 season, this along with finishing runners up after losing to Marine 2-1 in the Lancashire Combination Cup Final. 1972/73 season the club finished runners up in the League, losing out on goal average despite scoring 101 goals. In 1974/75 they reached the Lancashire Junior Cup Final losing 1-0 against Lancaster City, this despite famous victories against Formby, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool, and Morecambe. In the last ever Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup Final Bacup were beaten 1-3 by Caernarfon Town in a two-legged Final. In 1982 Bacup Borough became founder members of the North West Counties League, this following the amalgamation of the Cheshire League & the Lancashire Combination. In the 1987/88 season Bacup had to apply for re-election following finishing bottom of the Second Division. In the 1988 /89 season under the Management of Gary Warburton the club finished Runners up in Division Two and also finished Runners Up in the Lamot Pils Trophy, they also the same season reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup and due to the Leagues re-organisation the club started the 1989 /90 season as a First Division Club. However, in the1994 /95 season Bacup Borough were relegated back to the Second Division & did struggle both on and off the field. In September of the 1997/98 season with no points on the board and following a humiliating 0-10 defeat by Tetley Walker this prompted the Committee to part company with their then Manager. This then made way for the appointment of the former Doncaster Rovers Assistant Manager, Bury F.C Youth Team Coach, Accrington Stanley Director of Football, & Rossendale Utd & Glossop North End Manager Brent Peters to take over as Manager, a position he has held ever since. Brent‟s early record of achievement saw the club finish the 1997/98 season in 14th position, climbing in 1998 /99 to 11th position before in 1999/00 they finished 5th in the league, the clubs highest league position in over ten years. In Season 2000/01 the club reached the Second Division Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Squires Gate. Brent‟s greatest achievement came at the end of the 2002/03 season when he guided the club to the Championship of the North West Counties League First Division, the first major success for the club in 56 years. This brought Brent Three Manager of the Month Awards and The Manager of The Year Award. Season 2003/04, Bacup‟s first season following the First Division Championship the club finished 14th in the Premier Division and did win the North West Counties League Challenge Cup at Southport‟s Haig Avenue Ground by beating Newcastle Town 3-0. Other cup runs saw Borough as NWCFL Challenge Cup Quarter Finalists in 2004/05 and Lancashire FA Co-operative Trophy Quarter Finalists in 2007/08. They finished in 8th Position in the NWCFL Premier Division in the 2008/09 Season. June 14th 2004 brought another land mark for the club when Bacup‟s Secretary Frank Manning celebrated not only his 70th Birthday but also 50yrs in the game of which well over 40 years have been spent in administration at his beloved Bacup Borough F.C, This achievement was recognised by Frank being presented with a gold award on behalf of the Football Association by Mr Jim Kenyon the Secretary of the Lancashire Football Association. This achievement brought Frank the position of Chairman of the club, a post he held until accepting the position of President of Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC at the re-branding on June 17th 2013. It was a sad start to the 2011/2012 season with the sudden passing away of Kenneth Peters on the 15th June 2011 and he was also the club president and father of our manager. (Shortened to fit) 21

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY The Joseph’s Goal charity was set up in October 2012, by Paul and Emma Kendrick, to raise funds for research into NKH, (Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia), the life-limiting genetic condition that their son, Joseph, was born with. NKH is caused by an excess of glycine on the brain. Joseph was given five days to live but reached his ninth birthday in May this year. He is severely disabled and suffers from seizures. But he is resilient and is a fighter, and we, in turn, are fighting to find better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for NKH, which is very rare, with only fifteen children still surviving in the UK, and less than five hundred worldwide. Joseph’s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, run by a small group of family and friends, who all volunteer their services. No-one is paid. We have received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. In four years we have raised over £340,000, largely from charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. The funds raised have been sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London. Both have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is, at last, some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away. Since Joseph‟s Goal began, Joe has become a little celebrity locally: - in 2013, he was the mascot for Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup Final and was carried out onto the pitch at Wembley by the captain, Emmerson Boyce, which resulted in television appearances on BBC NW, Granada, and Sky News; - in 2013, Joseph‟s family were the WISHFM „Local Heroes Family of the Year‟; - in 2014, Joseph switched on the Xmas Lights in Wigan Town Centre; - in 2014, Joseph‟s Goal was recognised by Wigan Council as contributing to the „Believe in Wigan” campaign; - and in 2016, Joseph‟s Goal was a Finalist in the GM Chamber of Commerce Wigan Business Awards. If you are looking for a charity to support, then please consider our charity, and help Joseph to achieve his Goal. 22
