WELCOME TO OUR CLUB Good afternoon and welcome to the Scott Rees & Co Stadium for this North West Counties First Division fixture against Bacup Borough. As much as we dream and hope you are never going to go a season without losing again, despite how high your hopes are. We have still started the season tremendously well, and despite the loss to Prestwich we are still buzzing for each and every game. Bacup havenâ€&#x;t had the best of starts losing their first two games but that means nothing with Brent Peter's in charge. Brent is a fine figure of non league football and I am sure he will have his team ready for us today. As always I will also enjoy a catch up today with Brent, hoping discussing the 3 points that we have just taken though. Remember we are always out to improve our fan base and we are proudly linking up with Wigan Athletic fans again to offer free entry with your season tickets. Keep close eyes on the Latics News and Banter fan page too, for lots of giveaways and promotions. Please enjoy our hospitality in the clubhouse where we have a range of hot & cold, food and drinks on sale before, during and after the match, Enjoy the game Mark Club Chairman MATCH PHOTOS BY DAWN MARSHALL V PRESTWICH HEYS FC 10/8/19

WIGAN CUP NEWS

15/8/19

FT Winstanley Warriors 2 Ashton Town 3 Town through to the quarter finals of the Wigan Cup after a feisty fixture, that saw Town down to 10 men after 10 minutes, and finishing the game with just 9 men. Striker Daley Woods was sent off for raising his hands in the first, whilst Will Dunne became the first Town player to ever be sin binned, followed later by Mikey White. The home side, with quite a few ex Town links in the ranks took the lead, and made it a cracking derby game, substitute David Moore scored but The home side soon equalised. After Dunne was sin binned, Winstanley took advantage of playing against the 9 and made it 2 1. With 9 men Moore then scored an absolute peach with a perfect bicycle kick from a corner to level, and then with 2 minutes left, and still 9 men, Moorsey completed a remarkable hatrick with outstanding persistencey. No matter who the opposition. No matter what the competition, that was quality. #UpTheTown

NWCFL WEEKEND ROUN The Emirates FA Cup started this weekend, with 25 NWCFL teams competing in the Extra Preliminary Round, with action also coming in the First Division North and South. It all started on Friday night which saw a tight 1-1 draw between Skelmersdale United and NCEL side Penistone Church in front of 99 spectators. Eniar White put Skem ahead but Shaun Mundy equalised with fifteen minutes to go, setting up a replay on Wednesday evening. On Saturday, eleven winners from the NWCFL won through to the Preliminary Round. Burscough came from behind against AFC Liverpool as Deklan Hill put away an 86th minute penalty to secure a famous win for Nick Matthews' side. Longridge Town not only had the Emirates FA Cup trophy at the Mike Riding ground but treated the 392 paying spectators to a masterclass, running out 6-1 winners in their FA Cup debut. They initially fell behind against Barnoldswick Town, but stormed back with Paul Turner netting a hat-trick, Finlay Sinclair-Smith grabbed a first-half injury-time brace and Daniel Birch also netting. One of the biggest winners of the afternoon was Irlam; Ryan Ledson, Karl Cassell, George Farrelly and Jordan Buckley all got their names on the scoresheet in a 4-0 win against fellow NWCFL side Ashton Athletic. Padiham won by the same scoreline away at manager -less NCEL side Athersley Recreation, James Dean grabbing a brace as 101 fans saw two goals in each half for the away side. 150 spectators saw a spectacular first half at the Vestacare Stadium as Avro and Litherland REMYCA scored seven goals. Neil Monaghan and Colin Quirk put REMYCA into a twogoal lead early on, only to see Avro spin the game on its head with three quick goals (Liam Ellis (15p), Adam Latham (19), Ryan Hanson (24)). REMYCA had the best of the last period of the half as a Liam Diggle brace put Phil Stafford's side back in charge. The second half could not match up to the 100-miles-an-hour first half as neither side could find the back of the net as REMYCA advanced to the next round. Over at Charnock Richard, Spencer Bibby and Jack Kay were on the scoresheet as they defeated NWCFL First Division North side Lower Breck 2-1 in Breck's debut FA Cup game. 1874 Northwich ran out 2-1 winners also, away at Northern Premier League side Clitheroe with a hardy 386 fans watching. Additionally, Whitchurch Alport saw out a slender 21 victory away at Malvern Town to book themselves a Preliminary Round tie. Runcorn Town's Dave Forbes grabbed a brace, one in each half to secure the win against Rylands, another team making their FA Cup debut. West Didsbury & Disbury beat Squires Gate 2-1 and Winsford United headed home also 2-1 winners over Vauxhall Motors as Lee Duckworth's side grabbed two late goals to secure the win. 8

NDUP 10TH AUGUST 2019 NCEL Premier Division side Eccleshill United may have played most of t h e game with ten-men, but they defeated last seasons NWCFL Premier Division runners-up Bootle 2-1, Lee Hughes grabbing the only goal for Joe Doran's side. Hanley Town was edged by Leicester Road 3-2, after leading early on through Martin Stanier. Abbey Hey travelled to NCEL side Liversedge but travelled back along the M62 after been defeated 5-1 by Jonathan Rimmington's side. Congleton Town will have to do it all again as they drew one-all against Hereford side Westfields. Northwich Victoria and former NWCFL side Silsden also will have to play again as their game ended two-all as Silsden's Aiden Kirby netted his second of the game deep into injury time breaking the home sides hearts. In the NWCFL First Division North, Nelson and AFC Blackpool's game was called off due to a water-logged pitch, whilst Emley's game at Bacup Borough was called off at 3 pm for the same reason. A late, late Ryan Longsden goal for Atherton LR denied AFC Darwen a third straight win with a 2-2 draw. St Helens Town are still searching for points as Daisy Hill scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-1 win. A Brandon Collins goal secured their first points of the season for Holker Old Boys who won 2-1 against Golcar United. Chadderton won by the same scoreline against Pilkington while Prestwich Heys moved up to 11th in the standings with a 3-1 win over Ashton Town - Rio Wilson-Heyes grabbing a brace. A 19-minute second-half hat-trick was enough to see Shelley over the line as they continued their 100% winning record for the season - defeating Cleator Moor Celtic 3-2. Meanwhile, in the First Division South, FC Oswestry Town romped to their third win of the season, a 5-1 win against 12th placed Alsager Town. Cheadle Health Nomads secured all three points with a clean sheet and a 3-0 victory against Ellesmere Rangers. St Martins also maintained their perfect record with a slight 1-0 victory against Cheadle Town - a James Durman neat second-half finish. Barnton, Abbey Hulton United and Eccleshall all won 2-1 with victories over Wythenshawe Town, Maine Road and Sandbach United respectively on another delightful afternoon in the NWCFL.

MATCH REPORT 6/8/19 ASHTON TOWN AFC 3 V 0 DAISY HILL Dylan Glass, who notched twice in Saturday‟s season opener (3/8/19) against AFC Liverpool, continued his good scoring form midweek as Town beat Daisy Hill 3-0 at the Scott Rees and Co Stadium. The pacey striker opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he reacted the quickest after John Edgerton‟s shot could only be parried out by Daisy Hill „keeper Dean Williams. Glass bagged his second just five minutes later- in rather unusual fashion. He picked up in the ball in a wide position on the left, and his shot evaded Williams and found the bottom corner. Although Ashton Town had been on the front foot for large parts of the first-half, Daisy Hill were handed a lifeline when the referee awarded the visitors a controversial penalty. It appeared that Ashton Town full-back Edgerton and the Daisy Hill attacker just collided after they both missed the ball in the penalty area- but the referee pointed to the spot. Thankfully for David Dempsey„s side, Ben Purdham produced a brilliant save to keep Town‟s twogoal cushion in tact. The penalty save proved to be a key turning point, as Glass completed his hat-trick in the 38th minute after he rounded the onrushing Williams and guided the ball home. Town rode their luck in the second-half as Daisy Hill lacked their usual potency in front of goal and couldn‟t find the scoresheet. 10

MATCH REPORT 10/8/19 PRESTWICH HEYS 3 V 1 ASHTON TOWN AFC Heys secured their first points of the season with a thrilling 3-1 win over Ashton Town at Adie Moran Park. After defeats in their opening two matches this was a much-needed victory for Jon Lyons team and the Heys Manager, after a difficult week, will have been more than satisfied with his teamâ€&#x;s performance. This was more like the Heys we know, playing at pace, hardworking and individually displaying the talent which appeared to have eluded them in the opening games. It was important that they did, as Ashton arrived as League Leaders with wins in both of their opening games and eight goals scored. It was easy to see why, full of pace and vigour and a real threat in attack, they looked a side very much that will be challenging for honours. Heys made a lively start with debutant striker Jamie Sinnott linking well with Will Shawcross to create an opening for James Wolfenden whose shot flew wide. Rio Wilson-Heyes was also prominent, first going on an incisive run creating an opening for Sinnott who shot over and then crossing for Shawcross who headed just over. Ashton though were not without threat themselves, In the 20th minute some slick passing saw the ball worked across edge of the penalty area before Bradley Smart unleashed a shot that was superbly tipped round the post by Russell Saunders. Two minutes later the visitors took the lead. There was an element of fortune about the goal, in that it was wind assisted, but the delivery from the corner kick, whipped in just under the bar by Jay Thomas was also key, as the ball flew beyond the reach of Saunders. It was harsh on Heys, but they responded well and three minutes later they levelled. From a corner, Danny White whipped the ball in, and Mark Ayres rose magnificently to power home a header. Heys confidence was lifted Danny White went close with a low shot before Shawcross delivered an audacious 25-yard chip that landed on top of net. With the rain lashing down, Heys pressure told in the 41st minute. Some great work near the corner flag by Sinnott drew two defenders but a deft back heel found Jacob Holt, whose low cross skidded across the face of goal to the unmarked Wilson-Heyes to slot home. The lead almost proved short lived. On the stroke of half time Ashton opened the Heys defence with some slick play that saw the dangerous Dylan Glass denied twice by a double save by Saunders before the ball fell into the path of Jesse Dowling. It seemed he must score, but from nowhere Ayres appeared to clear off the line. With the wind behind them Heys look to capitalise on the restart. Danny White broke into the box, but his chip shot cleared the bar. In the 50th minute, Ashton were reduced to ten men as John Edgerton saw red for a poor challenge on Sinnott that gave the referee no choice. Looking to push home their advantage Heys pressed forward, Adrian Bellamy headed over from a White free kick before on the hour the lead was increased in superb fashion. Wilson-Heyes, looking back to his best, left the full back for dead before breaking into the box and rifling a shot into the far corner. 12

MATCH REPORT CONTINUED PRESTWICH HEYS 3 V 1 ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton were not done though. Their slick passing, illustrating why free scoring start to the season. In Dylan Glass they have a striker of real quality and he will wonder how he did not score in the 68th minute. Picked out by a Christopher Hill cross, his close-range header seemed set for the net but Saunders instinctively, lifted a shoulder and it proved enough to divert the ball to safety. Committed to attack, the visitors were open to the counter and Heys might well have increased their lead. Sinnott, whose blackened socks and shorts were illustrative of his ceaseless endeavor, saw a shot from 25 yards hit the bar before his replacement Shelton Payne cut into the box only for his strike to come off the post. Despite their lead, Heys could not rest, Ashton finished strongly, and it took some spirited defence to keep them at bay. This defeat for the visitors will have done nothing to question their credentials, for Heys it was a much-needed boost for theirs. On this showing reports of their demise appear unfounded. On this day 17th August 1964 Liverpool won 5-0 away to KR Reykjavik in a European Cup Preliminary Round tie - Liverpool's first match in a European competition. Those were the days before clubs chartered aircraft for away European ties and they had along-winded journey to Iceland. They flew from Liverpool to London, then from London to Prestwick in Scotland. Having a few hours to spare manager Bill Shankly put the players on a bus to show them the area he grew up in and that included a visit to the Butlins holiday camp, before taking their flight from Prestwick onto Iceland. 17th August 1991 An amazing start to Barnet's life in the Football League after they became the fifth club to win automatic promotion to the League after finishing as GM Vauxhall Conference champions in 1990/91. Their first Football League match on 17th August 1991 saw them lose 4-7 at home to Crewe Alexandra and three days later they drew 5-5 with Brentford in the League Cup, both games being played at their old Underhill ground. Not long after they won 6-0 at Lincoln in the Fourth Division before eventually finishing the season in seventh spot. 17th August 1996 On the opening day of the Premier League season a 21-year-old player by the name of David Beckham hit the headlines when he scored for Manchester United with a lob over Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan which was hit from the half-way line. Two weeks later Beckham went on to make his England international debut. 19

WHO’S PLAYED AT EDGE GREEN ST Andrew Murray Burnham was born on 7th January 1970 and is a British Labour Party politician serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017. He served as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport from 2008 to 2009 and Secretary of State for Health from 2009 to 2010. Burnham served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Leigh from 2001 to 2017. Born in the Old Roan area of Aintree, Lancashire, Burnham was educated at comprehensive schools and graduated with a degree in English from Fitzwilliam College at the University of Cambridge. After the retirement of Lawrence Cunliffe, the Labour MP for Leigh, Burnham was elected to succeed him in 2001. When Gordon Brown became Prime Minister in 2007, Burnham was promoted to Chief Secretary to the Treasury, a position he held until 2008, when he became Culture Secretary. In 2009, he was promoted again to become Health Secretary. In that role, he opposed further privatisation of National Health Service services and launched an independent inquiry into the Stafford Hospital scandal. After the Labour Party's defeat in the 2010 general election, Burnham stood as a candidate in the 2010 Labour leadership election, coming fourth out of five candidates. The contest was won by Ed Miliband. Burnham served as Shadow Secretary of State for Health until late 2010, when he was moved by Miliband to become Shadow Secretary of State for Education. He held that role for a year, then returning to the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Health. After the 2015 general election, in which Labour lost to the Conservative Party, Miliband resigned as leader. Burnham launched his campaign to succeed Miliband in the resulting September 2015 leadership election. He finished a distant second behind Jeremy Corbyn. Following this defeat, he accepted a role in Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Home Secretary. In May 2016 Burnham announced his candidacy to become Labour's candidate for the Greater Manchester Mayoralty and was selected in August 2016.He resigned as Shadow Home Secretary in October 2016. The mayoral election was held in May 2017 and the announcement of the June 2017 general election during the Mayoral campaign led him to stand down as an MP. On Saturday 25th May 2019 Burnham attended the Joseph‟s Goal Charity fund raising game between the Latics Legends and Manchester United Legends to offer his support to the cause, as he had done previously at earlier Joseph‟s Goal Fund raising games staged at the club. With the United legends trailing 1-0 at half time and despite him being an avid Everton supporter, Burnham was drafted in to bolster the United ranks for the second half, playing a key role in the reds revival with the tie ending level at one all. Unfortunately for Burnham though the Latics Legends won the penalty shootout at the end of the game to take the bragging rights on the day. 23

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion. 24

HISTORY OF bacup borough FC Bacup Borough Football Club was established in 1879. Their first match to take place at their current Brian Boys West View Stadium was not until 1889 when one of the founder members of the English Football League Accrington Stanley played there in front of over 1,000 spectators. Bacup‟s proudest achievement was winning the Lancashire Combination Championship in the 1946/47 season, this along with finishing runners up after losing to Marine 2-1 in the Lancashire Combination Cup Final. 1972/73 season the club finished runners up in the League, losing out on goal average despite scoring 101 goals. In 1974/75 they reached the Lancashire Junior Cup Final losing 1-0 against Lancaster City, this despite famous victories against Formby, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool, and Morecambe. In the last ever Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup Final Bacup were beaten 1-3 by Caernarfon Town in a two-legged Final. In 1982 Bacup Borough became founder members of the North West Counties League, this following the amalgamation of the Cheshire League & the Lancashire Combination. In the 1987/88 season Bacup had to apply for reelection following finishing bottom of the Second Division. In the 1988 /89 season under the Management of Gary Warburton the club finished Runners up in Division Two and also finished Runners Up in the LamotPils Trophy, they also the same season reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup and due to the Leagues re-organisation the club started the 1989 /90 season as a First Division Club. However, in the1994 /95 season Bacup Borough were relegated back to the Second Division & did struggle both on and off the field. In September of the 1997/98 season with no points on the board and following a humiliating 0-10 defeat by Tetley Walker this prompted the Committee to part company with their then Manager. This then made way for the appointment of the former Doncaster Rovers Assistant Manager, Bury F.C Youth Team Coach, Accrington Stanley Director of Football, & Rossendale Utd & Glossop North End Manager Brent Peters to take over as Manager, a position he has held ever since. Brent‟s early record of achievement saw the club finish the 1997/98 season in 14th position, climbing in 1998 /99 to 11th position before in 1999/00 they finished 5th in the league, the clubs highest league position in over ten years. In Season 2000/01 the club reached the Second Division Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Squires Gate. Brent‟s greatest achievement came at the end of the 2002/03 season when he guided the club to the Championship of the North West Counties League First Division, the first major success for the club in 56 years. This brought Brent Three Manager of the Month Awards and The Manager of The Year Award. Season 2003/04, Bacup‟s first season following the First Division Championship the club finished 14th in the Premier Division and did win the North West Counties League Challenge Cup at Southport‟s Haig Avenue Ground by beating Newcastle Town 3-0. Other cup runs saw Borough as NWCFL Challenge Cup Quarter Finalists in 2004/05 and Lancashire FA Co-operative Trophy Quarter Finalists in 2007/08. They finished in 8th Position in the NWCFL Premier Division in the 2008/09 Season. June 14th 2004 brought another land mark for the club when Bacup‟s late Secretary Frank Manning celebrated not only his 70th Birthday but also 50yrs in the game of which well over 40 years have been spent in administration at his beloved Bacup Borough F.C, This achievement was recognised by Frank being presented with a gold award on behalf of the Football Association by Mr Jim Kenyon the Secretary of the Lancashire Football Association. This achievement brought Frank the position of Chairman of the club, a post he held until accepting the position of President of Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC at the re-branding on June 17th 2013. 25

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY Joseph Michael Kendrick was born on the 9th May 2009, after an unremarkable pregnancy at 42 weeks. After his birth, although Joe was very quiet, he was thought to be otherwise healthy by the doctors. However, over the next couple of days, Joe rapidly deteriorated, and fell into a coma. Joseph was immediately taken to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where they began to test him to find the cause of his lethargy and low muscle tone. After six days, the Kendrick family found out that Joseph had a severe form of a very rare genetic disorder known as NKH. The Kendricks received the devastating news that Joseph was unlikely to live past 10-days old, and almost certainly wouldn‟t reach his first birthday. Luckily for the Kendrick‟s, they were surrounded by a very supportive family who helped get them through the dark first few days. Paul, Emma, and the family waited every day around Joseph‟s cot, praying that he would wake up, open his eyes or cry. The family was informed of a special medicine (sodium benzoate), which may help Joseph to wake up, and remove some of the glycine from his brain, but not from his cerebral fluid. On day 13, to the relief of his family, Joseph finally „woke up‟, started to cry and act more like a „normal‟ little baby. Joe‟s parents were able to change his nappies, feed him through his tube and cuddle him, which meant everything to Paul, Emma and the family. Paul and Emma were told that he was very jerky due to a seizure called a myoclonic jerk, and if he lived, they would turn into other types of seizures. Joe managed to fight through the horrible days in hospital and was able to go home for the first time with his family around a month after his birth. Paul and Emma had a very worrying year waiting for him to fall very unwell as they were told by doctors and to stop breathing, but thankfully Joe never did. Joe is doing really well despite his condition. Joe still has frequent seizures but takes medicine to help control them. Having ate orally until he was 4-years-old, Joe now has a gastrostomy for milk and medicines which is much easier to feed him through. Joe still manages tasters of food when he‟s well, and really enjoys yoghurt and ice cream in the summer months. Joe is also a very proud big brother to Sam and Tom and is doing really well at school. Joe‟s parents are very proud of their “strong and resilient” little boy and are proud on how well he has done to exceed all expectations. Joe made it very clear to his parents in showing that he wants to fight all the way, and his parents were inspired from this to fight on his behalf to help create awareness of this heart-breaking condition, find better treatment for him, and one day find a cure for NKH. Parents, Paul and Emma Kendrick formed the Joseph’s Goal charity in 2012 and have raised over £700,000 since their foundation just seven years ago. Joseph‟s Goal are fighting to find better treatments and hopefully, a cure for NKH, with raised funds being sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London for further research into the condition. Both doctors have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is finally some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away. 26
