WELCOME TO OUR CLUB Good afternoon and welcome to all to this North West Counties First Division North game against Daisy Hill. Unfortunately, and fairly ridiculously in my book, we had no game last weekend, yet this original fixture had been planned and then mysteriously moved for what seems to be absolutely no reason at all. Here's hoping that our momentum hasn't been stopped then, as our last game was a 6 0 victory, all be it over a very poor side in LR. LR look resigned to go down, but then its a battle between a few clubs, including today's visitors, to try and stay in the Counties. For me much more vital to fight too, as it will be very hard to get back in with no mass promotion like when we fell out of the league. It looks like it will be between Daisy, Holker and St Helens to go down, so today's visitors will be fighting for their lives so we expect a battle, and with striker Ashley Stott back in their ranks they will always have a chance. Finally I would like to thank everyone for helping out at the club last weekend. With not playing we turned that huge negative into a positive and redecorated our clubhouse in a day. Huge credit for this has to go to first team manager Dave Dempsey (pictured right) for rallying the troops, and for starting it but pulling a huge bit of paper off the wall to force us to do it! A great team day, that had a huge impact. Thank you so much as always for your support through the turnstiles, and if this is your first game here due to Pascal, then welcome, and here's hoping it won't be your last. Onwards and upwards as always. Mark Club Chairman 3

A FEW WORDS FROM THE MANAGER Good Afternoon, Firstly I would like to wish our visitors today Daisy Hill FC a warm welcome and hope that their officials, players and spectators enjoy their short trip to Ashton Town. What has happened since the last time I wrote a column in this programme I hear you say? Well, we have climbed 5 places in the table, we have found ourselves in the best form of our season and the squad is looking ready to have a real good go at the playoff spots hopefully introduced again next season. Off the pitch, I would like to thank and congratulate the committee and the helpers that got together last Saturday and decorated the clubhouse for our own and travelling fans to enjoy a nice cold beer pre and post match, it looks fantastic! So today's game I am expecting a tough battle, Daisy Hill are coming off the back of 3 straight draws against some stiff opponents which tells me the squad aren't far off winning games. Last time we played Daisy hill it was a comfortable day away even with 10 players for 60 minutes of the fixture were Ashton Town romped to a 4-1 victory and I am definitely expecting a closer game that the last... As a group we have had 2 excellent sessions where the lads have got together and worked really hard, my players are aware of the expectations that they have set themselves after winning 4 in the last 6 and scoring 20 goals in that time. The form of our Striker Daley Woods (cover photo) has been excellent and we have developed a style of play that suits the group nicely. We hope you all enjoy today and we can give Pascal the send off he deserves. Cheers everyone, Dave Dempsey 5

WHO'S PLAYED AT Giuseppe "Joe" Paladino is an English football coach and former professional player. Joeâ€&#x;s last known role was that of Goalkeeping Coach at New Mills FC who currently play in the North West Counties League, Division One South. During his playing career Paladino, who played as a goalkeeper, started his career in non-league football with Rossendale United and St Helens Town. He signed for Wigan Athletic in December 1990, making seven appearances in the Football League for the team during the 1990-91 season. On leaving Wigan Athletic Paladino returned to non-league football the following season with Runcorn, and went on to play for Witton Albion, where he was part of the squad that reached the final of the FA Trophy. His final non-league club was Altrincham. Following his retirement from playing Paladino also tried his hand in coaching. Paladino took charge of Daisy Hill in February 2002and later went on to take charge of our near neighbours, St Helens Town, in January 2004, before leaving the club in March 2005. After working as a goalkeeping coach at FC United of Manchester, he was appointed Assistant Manager of Rossendale United in March 2010. Paladino also took on the job of manager of Congleton Town in 2011. 16

T EDGE GREEN ST? Together with a short career as a professional footballer, Paladino also spent some time as a professional boxer. He retired in 1997 before returning as an amateur again in 2006. Joeâ€&#x;s professional boxing career was in the heavyweight division and consisted of a total of thirteen fights winning three and losing ten. He was beaten by a knockout on nine of the ten losing bouts and won two of his three winning bouts himself with a knock out. In total Joe actually boxed for 40 rounds during his professional career. Joe currently runs a thriving boxing academy in Sutton, St Helens which in recent years he has transformed to charity status following his own recovery from Thyroid cancer and he now utilises his facility to help improve the health of people in the St Helens area. Joeâ€&#x;s connection to and appearance at our Edge Green Street ground came in May 2018 when he appeared in goal for the Latics Legends team (pictured) playing against the Manchester City Legends in the annual Josephs Goal Charity game.

LEAGUE TABLE 1ST DIV NORTH

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and are still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith (Kitman/Physio) whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion. 20

HISTORY OF DAISY HILL FC Situated one and a half miles south of Westhoughton town centre, four miles from Bolton and five miles from the the Macron Stadium, home of Bolton Wanderers, the village of Daisy Hill first saw football in season 1894-95 although it is possible that football was being played in the area for some years prior to that date. The first known honours for the club came in 1896-97 when the Wigan and District League Championship and the Westhoughton Cup were won without losing a match. The location of the clubs ground in those days is unknown but the present ground was used during the first world war period when the club played in the Leigh and District Senior Sunday School League. The club then joined the Westhoughton League and during the 1920's and 1930's won many honours in what was one of the strongest local leagues at the time. Little is known of the period leading up to the second world war but the club re-formed in 1951 playing in the Westhoughton League on the St. James Street Recreation Ground/ Cricket Ground until the landowner made an offer to the club to return to New Sirs in 1957. The acquisition of the lease was a major step forward and gave aspiration to move into the Bolton Combination and develop into one of the most formidable clubs in the area. Dressing rooms were erected at the ground for the start of the 1968/69 season whilst on the field the club won the Bolton Combination Premier Division on four occasions, the Bolton Combination Cup on four occasions and the Lancashire Amateur Shield twice during the 60's and 70's. In 1978 the Club was accepted into the Lancashire Football Combination and with the advent of the Non-League football pyramid and the subsequent amalgamation of the Lancashire Football Combination and the Cheshire County League the Club became a founder member of the North West Counties League giving them the opportunity to play in and bring national competition to the village. With the National League System requiring clubs to meet new standards for facilities, new dressing rooms and a clubhouse for social activities were erected at New Sirs in 1982. Since then improvement of the clubs facilities has been ongoing and for the 2005-2006 season a floodlighting system has been installed which has allowed the club to remain in the National League System and return to National and County competitions. The club also comprises an U/18's Youth Team playing in the North West Youth Alliance and a thriving junior section playing in the Bolton, Bury and District Junior Football League. Notable players include: Dick Pollard and Billy Farrimond, both of whom went on to play cricket for Lancashire and England, Alf Watkinson, grandfather of the former Lancashire Cricket Club Captain Mike Watkinson went on to sign for Blackpool. ( Mike himself had the odd game for the club). Sam Marsh (Bolton Wanderers and Bury), Alf Gray (Torquay United and Lincoln City), Greg Strong (Motherwell) and Danny Williams (Inverness Caledonian Thistle) began their careers in senior or junior football at Daisy Hill Football Club. Other notable people / sportspersons born in Westhoughton who may or may not have been associated with the club: Ethel Johnson (Great Britain Olympic Athlete), Joe Bromilow (American Olympic Athlete), Jack Bruton (Blackburn Rover, Burnley, Bournemouth and England). Joe Clare (Accrington Stanley, Norwich City and Lincoln City). Tommy Woodward (Bolton Wanderers and Middlesborough), Francis Lee (Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Derby County and England) and Robert Shaw (Actor). 21

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY The Joseph’s Goal charity was set up in October 2012, by Paul and Emma Kendrick, to raise funds for research into NKH, (Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia), the life-limiting genetic condition that their son, Joseph, was born with. NKH is caused by an excess of glycine on the brain. Joseph was given five days to live but reached his ninth birthday in May this year. He is severely disabled and suffers from seizures. But he is resilient and is a fighter, and we, in turn, are fighting to find better treatments and, hopefully, a cure for NKH, which is very rare, with only fifteen children still surviving in the UK, and less than five hundred worldwide. Joseph’s Goal is a Wigan-based charity, run by a small group of family and friends, who all volunteer their services. No-one is paid. We have received support from Wigan Council, Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, as well as schools, local organisations and the business community. In four years we have raised over £340,000, largely from charity balls, football matches, bike rides, marathons and 10-Ks, swimathons, spinathons, Xmas jumper days, numerous other fundraising events, and hundreds of donations from generous people. The funds raised have been sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London. Both have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is, at last, some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away. Since Joseph‟s Goal began, Joe has become a little celebrity locally: - in 2013, he was the mascot for Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup Final and was carried out onto the pitch at Wembley by the captain, Emmerson Boyce, which resulted in television appearances on BBC NW, Granada, and Sky News; - in 2013, Joseph‟s family were the WISHFM „Local Heroes Family of the Year‟; - in 2014, Joseph switched on the Xmas Lights in Wigan Town Centre; - in 2014, Joseph‟s Goal was recognised by Wigan Council as contributing to the „Believe in Wigan” campaign; - and in 2016, Joseph‟s Goal was a Finalist in the GM Chamber of Commerce Wigan Business Awards. If you are looking for a charity to support, then please consider our charity, and help Joseph to achieve his Goal. 22
