WELCOME TO OUR CLUB Good afternoon and welcome to the Scott Rees & Co Stadium for this Macron Cup tie against Golcar United. Our last game was a truly wonderful performance, and one that had been coming. To score 9 goals in a game is some feat whatever the level, the only disappointment was letting the two goals in, and knowing the management team, they would have been focussing on that more than the 9! We are at a good level at the moment, and the level shows when you have players also playing at higher levels whilst also on loan for us, we have Luke for Hyde United, and Thomas Moore turning out for Morecambe Reserves. After last weeks disappointment of a postponed game we have slipped to 3rd in the league, whilst today's visitors are just two points behind in 7th. Golcar will be in the much an unknown quantity, however with the attendances that they have been getting, and their recent signings, especially the lads from Mossley like Max Leonard and Mike Fish have turned our visitors into a huge threat and addition to the Counties. It will take a huge performance today, but here's hoping we can get through and add to the couple of cup runs that we already have. Enjoy the game today and thanks for your support as always. Up the Town. Mark Club Chairman

MANAGERS NOTES Good Afternoon. Firstly I would like to welcome our opponents for todays game, Golcar United AFC. I hope you enjoy your visit for today's cup fixture and find your stay welcoming. In terms of today's opponents I can PHOTO BY DAWN MARSHALL honestly say they are a bit of an unknown quantity when it comes to my knowledge regarding them. They have recently been promoted into the NWCFL and have had a really strong start to their campaign. If they are anything like the other Yorkshire sides I have played / managed against they will be physical, direct and well organised and I am sure they will be a tough opponent to get the win against today. My players have been brilliant so far this season and in the last game we ran out 9-2 winners. We are scoring goals freely and I am really looking forward to seeing how we get on against a strong Golcar side this afternoon. The cup always brings a bit of excitement about the place and a sense of relief in terms of the pressures of the league. Hopefully the lads react the right way to that as if the results go the right way today, we could find ourselves with a local derby away at our noisy neighbours Ashton Athletic in the next round. the players will be doing everything they can in order to get the club to that game as it would be a fantastic day for everyone involved. We are aware that the possibility of that fixture isn't a formality and we have to apply ourselves right today and focus on getting the win to progress to the next round. Next week we have the short journey up the East Lancs to Atherton LR in the league. We managed to win this fixture last season 7-0 and beat them 9-2 last time out in the league at home so they will be making sure that the game doesn't end up as one sided as previous encounters. All you support is massively appreciated as always and we hope to see a few of you at LR after a win in the cup today... Enjoy your afternoon and keep supporting the FORTHCOMING FIRST TEAM FIXTURES boys! 26/10/19 Atherton LR (A) 15:00 02/11/19 Shelley (H) 15:00 Dave Dempsey 05/11/19 Chadderton (A) 19:45 1st Team Manager

REPORT V ATH LR 5/10/19 FT Ashton Town 9 (NINE) Atherton LR 2 A rampant Town hit LR for 9, with 4 goals alone for Man of the Match Jesse Dowling in just the 2nd half.. An excellent all round display from Town with some outstanding football played, storm through to the 3rd round of the PlayerMatch.Com Challenge Cup, with a home tie v Abbey Hey the reward. Jesse Dowling was simply unplayable in the second half scoring 4 very good goals, the latter being a well placed pen. Mikey White opened the scoring with a standard set piece, with debutant Daniel Flood, signed this week from Prescot Cables, putting in the perfect floated ball from a free kick. The impressive Thomas Moore got the next, and strikers Glass and Carey scored one each to go into half time 4 0 up. The second half was all about Jesse Dowling, however LR, persistent to be fair in wanting to play the game the right way scored a couple of consolation goals, one directly smashed from a free kick, and one tapped in following a first initial great save from Town's John Courtney. Sub for the day Brad Smart hit home the 9th in the 90th minute to wrap up an awesome performance, against an LR side whom had their own high hopes at the start of the game. #UpTheTown #DareToDream Photo by James Lobley - Kick Off Media - @JamesLobley7

ASHTON TOWN AFC JUNIO After two games played in the Wigan & District Youth Football League Under 12 Division West, Ashton Town currently sit 6th in the table having played two, winning one and losing one. On Sunday 6th October 2019 the lads were drawn at home to face Hindley Juniors Rangers in the League U12 category Knock Out cup first round. With Ashton‟s pitch being unfit due to being waterlogged coach Peter Simm switched the tie to our opponents ground at Westhoughton leisure Centre where the game was able to go ahead. Town kicked off playing against the wind, but despite this and against the run of play, town took the lead after Harry Paterson's shot was rebounded out to a defender who unfortunately put it in to his own goal, Town 1-0 up. Lucas Simm in town‟s goal kept us in the game with some good saves but was finally beaten by a long range effort before the break, so at Half Time it was all square at 1-1. Hindley started the stronger in the second period and went in front from a corner that Lucas Simm couldn‟t hold and left a simple tap in for the Hindley striker. Town didn‟t give up though and equalised from a scrappy goal that ping ponged around the box before Gavin Roberts stab the ball home to level the game again. Town soon took the lead with their third goal coming from Lucas Simm who‟s upfield clearance found Nathan Raynes. Nathan controlled the ball and played a lovely through ball into Sam Binder who beat the Hindley defence and coolly slotted the ball home into the bottom corner. A fourth goal was not long in coming for town, this coming from a free kick near to the edge of the Hindley penalty area, the ball was laid off to Reece Prescott who fired home into the top corner of the goal to increase Ashton‟s hold on the game. Final score: Ashton Town 4 v 2 Hindley Juniors Rangers So Ashton Town progress to the second round of the cup,

On this day 19th october 19th October 1960 Nowadays Andorra, Liechtenstein and San Marino are the countries who are the whipping-boys of European football but back in the 1960â€&#x;s that honour belonged to Luxembourg alone. On this day in 1960 England visited Luxembourg for a World Cup qualifier and won 9-0, Englandâ€&#x;s highest score in the competition. Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves each scored hat-tricks, Bobby Smith a couple of goals and Johnny Haynes one. 19th October 1993 Norwich City wouldn't perhaps be considered the most notable of English clubs who have played in European competitions but on this day in 1993 they did something no other English club ever did. The Canaries beat Bayern Munich in the Olympic Stadium, then Bayern's home ground, in the UEFA Cup. A draw in the return leg at Carrow Road saw them into the Third Round where they lost to Inter Milan. 19th October 2013 Wolves fan Peter Abbott, who lived in Ipswich in Suffolk, missed his first Wolves home match since 1976 when his step-daughter got married. Inconveniently for him the wedding was on the same day that Wolves entertained Coventry at Molineux although Wolves made the clash less of a pain by sending along a surprise wedding guest, club legend Steve Bull. 19th October 2015 'Leeds United are not a big club. Don't get me wrong, they used to be; now they're just a circus run by puppets, watched by blinkered seals. If they ever offered me a job, I'd turn it down. I want to be the captain of a cruiseliner, not the Titanic.' Steve Evans said that in April 2013 and yes, he was appointed manager of Leeds United on October 19th 2015!

WHO’S PLAYED AT EDGE GREEN ST Angelos Christeas was born on 9th February 1980, he is a former Greek International striker who at club level has played for Aris Thessaloniki, Werder Bremen, Ajax, Feyenoord, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04, Arles-Avignon, and Al-Nassr. Internationally, he was capped 88 times by Greece, scoring 25 goals. He was a member of the UEFA Euro 2004 winning team, scoring three goals, including the winning goal in the final against Portugal. He also represented Greece at Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Having been a regular player for the Greek Under-21 side, Charisteas made his senior international debut in February 2001 in a 3–3 draw against Russia. His impact was immediate as he scored two of the goals for Greece that day. His prolific goal scoring continued, eventually helping his team qualify for the Euro 2004. During the victorious Euro 2004 campaign, Charisteas scored three goals: one in the group stage against Spain, one against France in the quarterfinals and the winning goal against Portugal in the final. His contribution to the team and his impact in the competition was further recognised when he was named in the Euro 2004 All-star Team and he was also nominated for the 2004 Ballon d'Or award, where he finished 11th in votes. In January 2007, Charisteas told Dutch football magazine Voetbal International that winning Euro 2004 was an unbelievable experience which he would not swap for all the money in the world: "Even in 50 years‟ time, everybody will remember that I scored the goal which made Greece the champions of Europe. We wrote history and my life changed completely at that point." Charistias also scored 4 goals for his country in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification and was part of the squad that travelled to South Africa for the final tournament, where he played one game and he was the only Greek player with GiourkasSeitaridis, Kostas Katsouranis, Georgios Karagounis and the goalkeeper Kostas Chalkias to participate in 2 European Championships and a World Cup. Charisteas was called up again on 8 October 2011 for the qualification match against Croatia, and on 11 October 2011, where he scored the winning goal in the 85th minute in Georgia, securing a 2–1 victory which sent Greece automatically to the Euro 2012 Championships. With this goal, Charisteas score in three qualifiers for European Championships and for three consecutive World Cups becoming the only player to reach that in the Greek national team. He is also the second top scorer for the Greece national team with 25 goals, four less than the retired Nikos Anastopoulos. Charisteas one and only appearance here at Edge Green Street came on Friday 19th May 2017 when he appeared as a „Ringer‟ in the Dutch Masters team against the Joseph‟s Goal Latics Legends. As expected Charisteas scored the third of the Dutch team‟s four goals as they edged the Latics team 4-3 to avenge their previous year‟s defeat at the hands of the Latics Legends.

HISTORY OF ASHTON TOWN AFC Ashton Town Association Football Club originally joined the Div 2 of the Lancashire Combination in 1903 and were promoted Div 1 in 1st season. However, relegated back to Div 2 after finishing 16 in first season of Div 1. Towards the end of 1910/11 season club withdrew from league and fixtures taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The Club was reformed in 1953 as Makerfield Mill FC and after a short spell in the Wigan Sunday School League, they played in the St Helens Combination League for three years before joining the Warrington and District Amateur League in 1958. The founder was a persistant man named Derek „Mick‟ Mycock. In 1962 the Club was forced to move from its original ground at Windsor Road because of land development and it was at this point the Club name was changed to Ashton Town AFC. Home games were played on a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn until 1964, at which point the Club purchased a piece of land at Edge Green Street, previously the home of Stubshaw Cross Rovers. This became the Club`s new home, and development of the ground began. In 1969 the Clubhouse was completed, and was opened by Liverpool and England star Roger Hunt, and in 1975 the present dressing room facilities were built. During this period the Club joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, and then in 1978, they left to join the Cheshire County League for four years. The formation of the North West Counties Football League 1982 saw Ashton Town join as founder members, and the Club has remained in the league since then with the exception of season 1985-86, when they played in the Manchester League while essential ground maintenance work was carried out to bring the ground up to stringent ground grading requirements for the NWCF League. Throughout the years there have been many custodians of the club, owned by no-one, powered by volunteers. I‟ll surely miss out a host of names here but….Notable is the involvement of Jack Longstaffe, Pat Dooney, Barry & Sandra Longstaffe, Gordon Ellis,, Les Bailey, Len Riley, Malcolm Magrath, Billy Pomfrett and Jimmy Cahill. The latter two who have clocked up over a hundred years service to Town and Jimmy is still here on a daily basis. In more recent times, Clare and James Horner made a massive boost to the club with the long overdue formation of a Junior section. As did the arrival of our current Chairman, Mark Hayes, who has helped build the profile of the club both locally and nationally. Other volunteers to mention are Steve, Stefan, Denise, Ian, Dawn, Peter, Clare and more recently, Keith whose dedication and workrate is second to none on quite often a day to day basis. It would go amiss if I didn‟t mention at this point Brian Cunliffe, who has on and off, over the years worked behind the scenes painting, digging or mending often without the right resources for the job…..it‟s people like this who really make a place what it is. So Many to mention, others to forget, but we are here and that wouldn‟t exist if it weren‟t for those who give up their time and effort to keep the club alive. Our motto „Onwards & Upwards‟ sums us up as we now strive for promotion.

HISTORY OF GOLCAR UTD AFC Golcar United, based in Huddersfield, were established in 1904 and played their football in the Huddersfield & District Leagues before joining the West Riding County Amateur League in 1993. During the 1930‟s, games were played in front of crowds in excess of 1,000 people and they even featured on cigarette coupons. Golcar United moved to their current home Longfield Avenue in 1955. A recent period of success prompted the Golcar United committee to apply for promotion up the football pyramid. Back-to-back league and cup double wins in 2016/17 & 2017/18 proved that Golcar United were a team on the rise. The 2017/18 season saw the club win 20 out of 22 league games, scoring 105 goals and conceding just 20 ensuring they retained the West Riding Premier Division title to which they again added the Huddersfield District Cup. The ground, now called WMS Entrance Systems Park, had to undertake major development with the levelling of the pitch, surrounding fence erected, installation of hard standing, new clubhouse and floodlights. All of this development enabled the successful application to join the North West Counties Football League for the 2019/20 season. As part of the growing development, the club now has 16 junior teams from u6 through to u15‟s and continues to see the number of children affiliated to Golcar United grow year on year. The community of Golcar remains at the forefront of the club‟s thoughts and the successful junior teams also ensure future success on the pitch.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITY Joseph Michael Kendrick was born on the 9th May 2009, after an unremarkable pregnancy at 42 weeks. After his birth, although Joe was very quiet, he was thought to be otherwise healthy by the doctors. However, over the next couple of days, Joe rapidly deteriorated, and fell into a coma. Joseph was immediately taken to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where they began to test him to find the cause of his lethargy and low muscle tone. After six days, the Kendrick family found out that Joseph had a severe form of a very rare genetic disorder known as NKH. The Kendricks received the devastating news that Joseph was unlikely to live past 10-days old, and almost certainly wouldn‟t reach his first birthday. Luckily for the Kendrick‟s, they were surrounded by a very supportive family who helped get them through the dark first few days. Paul, Emma, and the family waited every day around Joseph‟s cot, praying that he would wake up, open his eyes or cry. The family was informed of a special medicine (sodium benzoate), which may help Joseph to wake up, and remove some of the glycine from his brain, but not from his cerebral fluid. On day 13, to the relief of his family, Joseph finally „woke up‟, started to cry and act more like a „normal‟ little baby. Joe‟s parents were able to change his nappies, feed him through his tube and cuddle him, which meant everything to Paul, Emma and the family. Paul and Emma were told that he was very jerky due to a seizure called a myoclonic jerk, and if he lived, they would turn into other types of seizures. Joe managed to fight through the horrible days in hospital and was able to go home for the first time with his family around a month after his birth. Paul and Emma had a very worrying year waiting for him to fall very unwell as they were told by doctors and to stop breathing, but thankfully Joe never did. Joe is doing really well despite his condition. Joe still has frequent seizures but takes medicine to help control them. Having ate orally until he was 4-years-old, Joe now has a gastrostomy for milk and medicines which is much easier to feed him through. Joe still manages tasters of food when he‟s well, and really enjoys yoghurt and ice cream in the summer months. Joe is also a very proud big brother to Sam and Tom and is doing really well at school. Joe‟s parents are very proud of their “strong and resilient” little boy and are proud on how well he has done to exceed all expectations. Joe made it very clear to his parents in showing that he wants to fight all the way, and his parents were inspired from this to fight on his behalf to help create awareness of this heart-breaking condition, find better treatment for him, and one day find a cure for NKH. Parents, Paul and Emma Kendrick formed the Joseph’s Goal charity in 2012 and have raised over £700,000 since their foundation just seven years ago. Joseph‟s Goal are fighting to find better treatments and hopefully, a cure for NKH, with raised funds being sent to Dr Johan Van Hove at Colorado University, Denver, USA, and Professor Nick Greene at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London for further research into the condition. Both doctors have presented their research findings to NKH families at conferences in the North West organised by Joseph‟s Goal, and trustees of Joseph‟s Goal have twice attended NKH conferences at Harvard University in Boston, USA. The many varied defective genes that have been found in different children/families in the brain that causes NKH have been identified, and the task now is to find a route to replace it with a healthy gene. There is finally some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, with real grounds for optimism that better treatments for NKH are not far away.
