Message from Fingal County Council | Fingal Dublin Chamber

Dear Chamber Member, I am grateful to the Fingal Chamber for the opportunity to address business in Fingal and to share my thoughts on the strength of the area and its social and economic potential. I feel fortunate to have a partnership with Fingal Chamber through which I can learn and respond to the real concerns of business and communicate what I believe to be the strategic opportunities for the region. Those of us who are fortunate to both work and/or live in Fingal are only too well aware of what an exceptional location it is. The quality of life based on the physical assets of land, coast and being an engine of the national capital through the location of the airport, not to mention the young talented population, is unparalleled in the country. The job of the region's population, not least your Council, is to broadcast these assets to the wider world, as well as to our immediate neighbours across the wider city region, so we can develop these assets to their full potential. The Council welcomes the initiative of Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil hogan, to focus and strengthen the role of local authorities in enterprise development, as outlined in his policy publication 'Putting People First'. Fingal County Council offices were used to launch the first Local Enterprise Office (LEO) in our atrium. This joint initiative between Minister hogan and Minister Richard Bruton, Department of Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation, builds on the success of the County Enterprise Boards and opens connections to the existing enterprise development work of the Council. Our investment in infrastructure is the focus for relatively underdeveloped areas with much work now underway such as the recent high quality link between the n2 and n3 that provides vital western access to the airport campus and makes it possible to travel across Fingal east/

west with greater ease. A new reservoir has come into operation in Balbriggan and upgrade on our water supply and disposal is ongoing. Meanwhile, we have recognised the pressure on business due to the economic downturn and since 2009 have reduced our 'rate' by over 14 per cent - the highest reduction of any local authority. Fingal business rates are significantly lower than those of the three Dublin counties, all of which have undergone the painful experience of 'revaluation', with Dublin City soon to follow. When assessing the work of service providers, such as a local authority, it is all too easy to view them as a cost and ignore the extent to which their service provision is woven into the fabric of everyday life. Most of the revenue raised is spent locally in one form or another and in the case of your local Council we believe we go that bit further and, through innovative initiatives, provide more than might otherwise be judged possible. Your hard-working Councillors never fail to raise local issues for resolution. Our staff are your neigh-

bours, your customers and their loyalty and dedication to servicing their community are what make us successful. We have devised a structure, unique to Fingal, that provides a more focussed local and citizen-centred service that has marked a step-change in service. I have a mantra that I often repeat to staff regarding change and improvement - “it never ends” - and this is to raise awareness of the need for continuous improvement and to make tangible the personal reward that innovative improvements bring. I believe we are working to serve our area like this, but I would never be complacent enough to suggest that we are always right or that we can’t improve. We rely on developing relationships with business and enterprise. We can’t improve if we don’t know something needs improving. I encourage you to view us as your Council with a clear stakehold in our success as that is how we view your business in return.

Feature | Glen Dimplex

Quantum Leap Glen Dimplex’s new Quantum energy system has been heralded as the future in home heating solutions.

T

outed as one of the most significant developments in the history of Irish-based electrical goods firm Glen Dimplex, the new Quantum home heat storage system is designed to make use of renewable wind energy generation, and has the potential to reduce Ireland’s dependence on oil and gas, and reduce fuel poverty. The Quantum energy system is a three pronged one; revolving around the Heater, Cylinder and Hub, each working to complement one another. The system is designed to draw the vast majority of its running costs from off-peak tariffs, and is fully controllable and customisable, featuring user controls which can be tailored to fit your own situation. The heater, for example, will intelligently monitor weather and usage patterns, and will learn to adapt accordingly. The hub, which functions as the system manager, overseeing operations, also allows for two-way communication between the Quantum appliances and the energy supply and as it is fully automated, requires no user input. Everything adds up to highly controllable heating, and low running costs.

(energy). Under a pilot scheme supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Fingal County Council in association with Glen Dimplex carried out the replacement of electric storage heaters in 73 units in Blanchardstown. “The new generation of highly efficient Quantum storage heaters were designed and developed by Glen Dimplex which are connected to the electricity grid, and can take excess wind energy when it’s available and store it to be released later as heat as the occupier requires. This wind energy would otherwise be unused,” says Ann Marie Farrelly, Director of Housing at Fingal County Council. “The project addresses two major energy issues - storing wind energy so that it is available when the wind isn't blowing and reducing end-use energy consumption, particularly in domestic dwellings. It is hoped that this project will deliver significant savings in home heating costs and that significant environmental benefits will also be derived, including progress towards Ireland’s 2020 target of having 40 per cent of electricity produced from renewable

sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports. The Project was supported by SEAI and Glen Dimplex at no cost to Fingal County Council. The project also involved a voluntary housing body – Tuath – and Dublin City Council.” Mr Ronan King, Chairman of The Green Way said: "The advantages to the end consumer of using Quantum are fantastic. Quantum gives greater efficiency and comfort control with potential energy savings of 20 per cent and cost efficiencies of 30 per cent plus when compared to older storage heaters. Our aim is to support the transformation of the Irish economy into a sustainable green economy. We see our involvement in this project as validation of The Green Way's role as a deployment platform for innovative clean technologies at a municipal scale. The goal of The Green Way is to facilitate sustainable employment opportunities and position Dublin as a smart city-region where the public and private sectors can work in partnership to solve energy and environmental challenges."

Glen Dimplex Chairman and Chief Executive Sean O'Driscoll said: "Almost half of all Irish homes are fuelled by imported oil and so this new system will give the ordinary homeowners and organisations like housing associations a very attractive option that will reduce fuel bills, especially to lower income families and the elderly, and may help remove them from fuel poverty. Overall, the project has the potential to become a major new industry supporting many hundreds of new jobs at the Group's locations in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland." A pilot project is already underway utilising 140 homes in Dublin in partnership with The Green Way, a Cleantech cluster organisation in Dublin. This project has already shown that the Quantum system has the potential to deliver homeowners savings in the region of 30 per cent (economical) and 15 per cent

Phlok | Feature

Ahead of the Phlok There is a new app in the Fingal area and it is helping local businesses market their brands and local consumers save money, as Phlok founder Paul Graham explains. Can you explain the concept behind Phlok, how it works and what motivated you to create it? I was trying to use Facebook (and Twitter) for my other businesses and found that it just didn’t work. We couldn’t get people to like our page or follow us on twitter and discovered lots of businesses had the same problem. On top of that, the few people with whom we were successful always seemed to live far outside our geographic market. Phlok connects local businesses to local people and incentivises them to purchase (and follow and check in using Phlok). These actions publicise the local business to their Phlok followers and their Facebook connections should they decide to be connected with Facebook. Phlok uses a virtual currency to incentivise these actions. Phlok points are worth real money and can be collected or spent in any store or business on Phlok. The business gets access to a dashboard which shows who is following, checking in and spending with them and gives the ability to target market exclusive promotions to their followers, both personally and privately. Phlok takes the pain out of building an audience online and brings those people into the Main Street again. Phlok is ideal for making ‘Shop Local’ campaigns meaningful. How can local retailers benefit from using the service? By using our platform, retailers can build their Phlok quickly without having to focus energy on it. They instead focus on promoting their business on our public activity feed, which is visible to all Phlok users, and through their targeted promotions with their followers. It is incentivising people to come into their shop or business without having to give the shirt off their back. Phlok makes sense of social networks because people endorse businesses to their friends when they make purchases – this is priceless! We provide

Paul Graham, Phlok Founder.

ongoing training and support so that every business can get value from Phlok. What areas does it currently cover and are there plans to expand Phlok’s reach? We are very visible in North Dublin, but are now moving into the City Centre and West. We have just employed another 11 local people and are growing all the time to scale Phlok through Leinster, and over the next 12 months, throughout Ireland. What are your ultimate goals to achieve with Phlok? As we scale out Ireland, we are already making plans for international expansion. We have already had interest in Russia and UAE (and obviously the UK) to take Phlok there. Beyond that, any English speaking nation is of interest to us, including the US.

The problems we are trying to solve are deep rooted. We cannot just ask people to shop local and hope they feel guilty enough to do that. We need to make it worth their while without it costing the earth. As local businesses, we cannot afford to ignore what is going on online. We cannot stop the multiples doing what they do - but we can fight back. Phlok is the ammunition. The businesses on Phlok have my pledge that we are there to help and support and enable them to get the best out of our platform. What we want them to do is continue to have pride in offering the products and services they do, and together we can save Main Street. To find out more about how we can help go to www.phlok.com and register your business.

Development in Action Communities in Africa are not the only ones benefitting from the work of Action Ireland Trust, writes Joseph O’ Connor.

A

lthough only officially established in 2011, Portmarnock-based charity organisation, Action Ireland Trust, has been sowing its seeds in Africa for eight years now. Last year, the group delivered over s500,000 worth of medical and educational resources and equipment to the tiny African country of Lesotho. For a charity still in its infancy, an aid package on that scale is no mean feat. Niall Fitzgerald, who has been teaching at Portmarnock Community School for 29 years, is the brainchild behind the project. He was inspired by a similar initiative run by Belvedere College in South Africa. Back when he sat on the Board of Management at Belvedere, he travelled to South Africa where he observed the development work being carried out. “I felt we, as a school, could do it just as good - if not, even better. I brought the idea to the Board of Management here in Portmarnock Community School and they had the vision and the foresight to go with it,” explains Fitzgerald. This initial experience led to Fitzgerald, along with pupils and some parents, beginning volunteer work in South Africa with Marian

Finucane’s charity ‘Friends in Ireland’ in 2005. It was through working with this organisation that Fitzgerald learned the skills required for charity work in Africa. He reflects on the benefits of the experience. “We worked with Marian Finucane’s charity and I suppose we cut our teeth on that in South Africa. We saw the problems and the difficulties, and having an NGO like that certainly gives you a structure that you need to have going into any of these places.” The group spent five years working with Friends in Ireland, who in 2010, had been working on an exit strategy. Fitzgerald saw this as an opportunity, and so, Action Ireland Trust was born. The move into Lesotho came about somewhat accidentally, but proved to be a welcome set of circumstances, as Fitzgerald explains. “Lesotho came about accidently in some respects in that we had a container that local people had contributed to, but we were having great difficulty trying to get it into South Africa and in the end the Lesotho Embassy said they would take it from us without any incurring costs. So we struck up a relationship with the embassy here in Ireland and we saw opportunities there, which proved very successful.”

Portmarnock CS principal Pat O’Riordan helps distribute school text books in Lesotho.

The organisation is now based at two locations in Lesotho, a country made up mostly of highlands where many of the villages can be reached only on horseback, by foot or light aircraft. One location is focused on education, while the other is on medical. This year, the group built a school administration block, while the base for a science block was constructed and a market garden cultivated. On the medical front, the local hospital has been reroofed, with wards and corridors redecorated and refurbished. All this has been made achievable through local fundraising, as well as the support of the Lesotho Government, Fingal County Council and companies such as Tayto, Cadbury, Country Crest, the DAA, DHL and Electric Ireland Aid. It is not only the African communities that benefit from the charity work. Each February, Portmarnock Community School sends more than 60 transition year students, parents, teachers and friends to engage in the programme. Fitzgerald highlights the skills the pupils develop from their involvement in the project. “There are probably three things they gain from it. The first one is confidence. To just undertake it is quite a challenge. It is not for the faint-hearted. Even just in terms of raising funds, getting the vaccinations and preparing themselves physically and psychologically. So there’s a big confidence factor in that. The next thing is leadership. It helps them demonstrate leadership and out of the confidence they develop a leadership and enterprise skill. The third thing is that they become much more responsible.” Now that Fitzgerald’s vision has come to fruition, what does the future hold for the Portmarnock-based charity? He appears determined to build on the current success. “We would like to elevate Action Ireland Trust into a fully registered charity and put it on the national scale and I think we have strong enough people to do it. I never dreamed it would get to this stage but I think it can deliver significantly in other countries, but time will tell.”

ast April, Irish business leaders travelled to the US as part of Ireland: Gateway to Europe 2013, a privately funded and organised foreign direct investment collaboration established to attract, encourage and support US companies to establish operations in Ireland, and to highlight the unique advantages Ireland offers as a gateway to Europe. Adrian McGennis, Ireland: Gateway To Europe Co-Founder believes that Ireland remains one of the most effective, attractive and competitive countries in the world to do business for foreign entities. He says: “Whether it is for our impressive track record, talent, tax system or technology - or a combination of all of these things - Ireland, as home to many of the world’s largest multinationals, is now the global base of choice for businesses of all sizes embarking on an internationalisation strategy.” McGennis continues: “As it stands, it is estimated that two to four US companies

visit Ireland every week with a view to setting up business, which equates to between one and two hundred companies a year. By bringing Ireland to the US, this privately funded, non-commercial, collaborate event attracted over four hundred companies across four cities. We are turning traditional FDI on its head by bringing Ireland to the US rather than waiting for the US to come to Ireland. The opportunities are out there, it is our collective responsibility to capitalise on them.” Following the success of the inaugural Ireland: Gateway to Europe Expo, which took place last year in Boston, this year Ireland: Gateway to Europe 2013 has grown exponentially with three more events having taken place in New York, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Boston, for one week from Monday April 15 to Friday April 19. Attendees included CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, financiers, accountants, legal advisors, VCs, advisory boards and tax attorneys. Ireland: Gateway to Europe represents a

broad sample of the best of the Irish service sector covering banking, legal, recruitment, engineering, accountancy and tax amongst others. Participating companies include: MKO Partners, Sigmar Recruitment, The FKM Group, Byrne Wallace, Fingal Dublin Chamber, PlanNet21, AIB, Ulster Bank, Vodafone, Mazars, VHI Healthcare, IFG, Capstone, Danske Bank, Contracting Plus, Tomkins, 2Flow, The HR Company, Invesco, Ethos Engineering, Osborne Recruitment, Reddy Architecture + Urbanish, Gardiner & Theobold, ConnectIreland, BNP Paribas Real Estate Ireland, Beauchamps and Fingal County Council. George Hook and Newstalk radio broadcast live from the four events during the week. PJ Howell, Director of Services with Fingal County Council and Tony Lambert, Chief Executive of Fingal Dublin Chamber, participated in what was a great opportunity to meet many executives from companies across the United States. “We were delighted to be able to inform the many US business people who attended the events that there was a warm welcome for

Feature | Fingal Schools Model

Model behaviour Born out of a time when Ireland’s young population was booming, the Fingal Schools Model revolutionised how school planning could transform communities for young and old alike. Colm Gorey spoke to Fingal County Manager, David O’Connor, about the secrets to its success.

A

s one of the youngest councils in Dublin, Fingal County Council found that the information coming from the 1996 and 2001 censuses showed a huge boom in the number of children in the county. This meant an enormous investment in schools was needed if the council was to meet the demands placed on the existing school system of that time. Following the establishment of the cross-sectoral Fingal County Development Board, a collection of representatives of the local authority, local development agencies, state agencies and the social partners including an Garda Síochána, the Department of Education and the Department of Social Welfare, prioritised addressing this as an immediate priority.

18

Fingal County Manager, David O’Connor, says it was the case that the process of how schools were funded was in need of serious change: “In the past, an area would have been formed into a Catholic parish and the parish priest appointed then petitioned the Department of Education for a school. Because of the rapid expansion of population, plus the breakdown of that model, that was not now going to succeed and our councillors recognised that. They agreed that if we didn’t do something to get that moving quickly, we’re going to have a very serious crisis on our hands.” To answer this concern, the council looked to international models for guidance and successful adaptations. After research, the Dutch model of city development was considered a world-leader in planning, as O’Connor explains: “We were observing the Dutch in particular who were experts in dealing with the modelling of expansion of Amsterdam city. When they went about expanding the cities and towns near Amsterdam – rather than allowing the city to spill into the hinterland, they decided to place the school in the heart of new

M b e

communities because they identified that the school would be the centre of community life. Differing faiths would share the same campus, which is where our idea came from. We identified that they were able to provide much better community facilities by combining the gymnastic and non-classroom schoolrooms in one place so they get much better critical mass that could be used by the wider community.”

Feature | Fingal Schools Model

Starting the process With the basis of the model formed, the council went to the Department of Education and discussed the possibility of taking on the Fingal Schools Model. The Minister for Education at the time, Noel Dempsey, began to look into the considerations for the Fingal Schools Model but came across one particularly large stumbling block that was typical of Dublin and its surrounding areas before 2008; inflated land prices. Similarly for Minister Dempsey at the time, it became clear that to achieve what the Department had hoped for in school developments, all of the allocated budget would be needed to purchase the land leaving nothing left for the actual development of the facilities. With this in mind, the first discussions of the Fingal Schools Model began with his successor, Minister Mary Hanafin in 2004 and Fingal County Council about the possibility of the council taking up the responsibility of purchasing the land for the schools. Holywell School and Community Centre, Swords.

Formulating the model As O’Connor explains, the model was there to take advantage of the council’s understanding of the local area: “We deal with developers all the time so we could use the planning process to persuade people to give us land for less than what the government might pay for it – afterall, it was assembling a better place to live - but if we did this, we wanted something back. So we made a deal that for every euro we saved them in the cost of land, we wanted 50 cents

...the facilities in the school are better than those in some of the best feepaying schools in the city. Several are used by national sports bodies to train their Olympic team; they’re just superb fully-equipped places and they can be used for everything.” 20

back and we would use that to put in much better community facilities in the schools.” With this plan, Fingal County Council envisaged a move away from the history of poorly maintained community centres that were commonplace in the past: “I used to work in Dublin City Council and the history of community facilities was, as they were built in isolation – 'a box in a field' - with very basic facilities and vulnerable to neglect as communities aged. Population would grow, the facility becomes damaged, un-owned and un-loved because the community had moved on. However, if you put it as an integral part of a school, give the facility entirely to the school for the duration of school hours, you end up with a completely sustainable model. We identified 13 different schools, eight delivered to date, and we have delivered far more community facilities to those schools than would ever have been possible before. They’re distributed in the newer communities around Fingal including Blanchardstown, Swords, Balbriggan and one coming up in Lusk.” The community centres that have been built are considered some of the highest standards in the country and are used throughout the year leaving no time to fall into disuse. This

is achieved by having the centre run by the schools during school hours and by either the Vocational Education Committee (VEC) or a management company outside of school hours and during the summer months. The model’s success has gained notoriety for the top-class standard facilities it has produced which, O’Connor believes, is something Fingal County Council is proud to have achieved: “They’re all excellent. One local Minister observed recently that the facilities in the school are better than those in some of the best fee-paying schools in the city. Several are used by national sports bodies to train their Olympic team; they’re just superb fully-equipped places and they can be used for everything from drama to soccer and a lot of them would have all weather pitches around them as well. At the weekends, people can come and have a social centre for themselves.” As the primary schools were developed to suit the growing demand of young children, now the time has come to provide for these children as they progress to secondary education. This is now the next step in the model’s development and by using the Fingal Schools Model, it is hoped that its success can be repeated again for the benefit of everyone living in the communities around Fingal for years to come.

A Gift Giving Business Seeing business grow from strength to strength over the years, The Gift Voucher Shop is now using its knowledge and innovation to help provide for communities both locally and internationally, writes Kevin McElligott.

F

or a company just over ten years in existence, the Gift Voucher Shop has achieved much in its short life. Established by Michael Dawson in 2002 in partnership with An Post, their mission was to pioneer the multi-retailer gift card. With over 550 retailers participating in the scheme, consumers were no longer required to travel to a particular store or shopping centre to buy a gift voucher; they now have the widest choice available to them at their local post office through the One4All gift card. Since then, the multi-award winning company has gone from strength to strength with over 1,000 retailers now featured and an expansion of operations overseas. Jock Jordan, Group Sales Director, explains, “We’ve branched out to the UK market which is a much bigger market than Ireland so we’ve been seeing exponential growth over the last few years.” With all the growth and expansion going on, CEO Michael Dawson made sure not to lose focus of the organisation’s corporate social responsibilities. “Michael was an Ernst and Young entrepreneur finalist in 2007 and as part of that project, a group of entrepreneurs went

out to Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, and an initiative was set up by that group called the ‘Soul of Haiti Foundation’ and we’ve have been fundraising for them ever since,” explains Jordan.

are four starting points; Dublin, Cork, Carlow and Sligo and there’ll be over 300 cyclists taking part. We hope to raise s400,000 for the Soul of Haiti Foundation, so it’s grown tenfold in four years.”

Dawson has combined several ventures that he is involved in to raise money for the Soul of Haiti Foundation, culminating in the Cycle4Haiti event which takes place every May bank holiday weekend.

Inviting their own business contacts to get involved in the cycle, several of the company’s corporate clients assemble teams to compete, a testament to the enthusiasm surrounding the event. Jordan views the cycle as not only a great cause but also “a great way to network with our customers and work with our clients. There’s a synergy between our gift voucher business and our bikes4work business.”

The idea for the cycle emerged from the Bikes4work scheme, a scheme championed by the Gift Voucher Shop, which helps employees take advantage of a government initiative that uses tax incentives to encourage people to cycle to and from work. What started out as a fun idea to raise money soon escalated into a massive fundraising event as Jordan recalls, “It was basically just a few people here at the office that were availing of the Bikes4work scheme and we decided to do something. So we came up with the idea of a cycle in aid of Haiti. The cycle started at the GPO in Dublin and finished in Galway and the first year we did it in 2010, we had 36 cyclists. This year there

With its main offices based in Swords, the company hires 56 employees, predominantly from the Fingal area, taking on double that amount around the Christmas period which is a significantly busy period for them. It’s around this time of year that the company looks to give back locally too, affiliating itself with various charitable efforts. “Christmas FM tries to raise money for a specific cause each year and last year it was ISPCC Childline. We were involved in helping them to raise s100,000 that year. We also recently ran a promotion with An Post where we donated s1 for every gift card sold to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. We raised just over s26,000 over the course of a month. So our CSR approach has two streams; our international charity which is the Soul of Haiti Fund and then our national charity causes. So we’re both international and local in our efforts.”

“It was basically just a few people here at the office that were availing of the bikes4work scheme and we decided to do something so we came up with the idea of a cycle in aid of Haiti.” 22

he leading global airline network, with the highest number of daily flights, members and destinations, the Star Alliance network was first established in 1997, its main aim to improve the travel experience for flyers. The Alliance acts as a global network for travellers, bringing together 27 member airlines who provide over 21,900 flights each day to more than 194 countries around the globe. With route maps and airport information, mobile apps and Star Alliance Connection Centres, travelling can become less of a hassle. “Star Alliance is the largest airline alliance flying into Ireland, with eight airlines flying over 100 nonstop flights each week from Dublin, Shannon and Belfast. For the Irish based business or leisure traveller, Star Alliance gives you a global reach,” said Alan Sparling, Chairman of Star Alliance in Ireland. “The member airlines of the Star Alliance network are among the most respected in the world. In order to become members, all airlines must comply with the highest industry standards of customer service, security and technical infrastructure.”

ScandinaVian airlineS As a founding member of the STAR Alliance, SAS – Scandinavia’s largest airline – is one of the eight airlines with over 100 flights leaving Ireland each week. This year Scandinavian Airlines celebrates 47 years flying into Dublin Aiport and offers 26 nonstop flights a week linking Dublin to the capitals of the Scandinavian countries - Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo. At the beginning of June, SAS – which operates from Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport – introduced a new and innovative concept whereby they ‘drop’ the traditional Business class, Economy Extra and Economy service, instead introducing a new service concept which is aimed towards the modern traveller across Europe – SAS Go (‘A Great Deal’) and SAS Plus (‘A Great Deal More’). SAS Go is aimed towards leisure customers which combines low fares and additional service elements such as a free check-in bag, free onboard coffee and tea, as

24

well as free newspapers. SAS Plus is aimed towards the more time-conscious frequent traveller with a need for lounge access, flexible tickets, fast track security and other features. For those travelling a little further afield, SAS Business is still available on long-haul flights.

continental connectionS One of the Alliance’s oldest members, having joined in 1997, Lufthansa is among the world’s largest and most prestigious airlines. Last year the airline celebrated its 40th birthday at Dublin Airport. Lufthansa first launched a bi-weekly service between Dublin and Manchester on April 1st 1972, and over 40 years later, the Dublin operation is going from strength to strength. As passenger figures grow year on year, Lufthansa has consistently increased capacity on routes such as DublinFrankfurt and Dublin-Munich. “Dublin Airport has had a four decade long partnership with Lufthansa and we look forward to continuing to work closely together in the years ahead,” said Cormac O’Connell, head of Aviation Business Development at Dublin Airport Authority. In 2001, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) was formed from the

expansion of Swissair subsidiary Crossair, and joined the Star Alliance in 2006. now a member of the Lufthansa Group, the carrier operates a domestic and regional network within Switzerland and Europe as well as international services to Asia, north America and Africa, flying to 74 desintations in 38 countries across the world, and has been flying to Ireland since 2003 under the SWISS brand.

turKiSh delight Another more recent member of the Alliance, Turkish Airlines is the country’s national airline and its largest operator, based at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport. The airline, which operates a network of services throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa, north and South America and Asia, joined the Star Alliance in 2008. The airline’s successful Dublin-Istanbul service has doubled to twice daily flights, three times a week since March while it is also adding extra flights from Dublin to the country’s largest city during summer 2013. “We have been working closely with Turkish Airlines for several years and this extra frequency will offer passengers additional choice and

the aMerican connection Based across the Atlantic Ocean, United Airlines has been in operation in Dublin for several years. United was a founding member of the Star Alliance in May 1997 and operates a route linking Dublin with Washington DC. The airline, which merged with Continental Airlines in 2010, has also offered nonstop flights between Dublin and its new York hub at newark since 1998. “We monitor demand in all the markets we serve and review potential new-route opportunities on an ongoing basis. Ireland and the US have a long history and there is a great deal of travel between the two nations,” says Yvonne Muldoon, Sales Manager Ireland and northern Ireland. “We offer customers from Ireland the ability to connect to destinations across the United States. We work closely with the DAA to ensure that our customers have a quality experience when using the airport. Dublin Airport’s pre clearance facilities are a great advantage to our customers. We have also recently signed an agreement with Aer Lingus on airport lounge access, granting United BusinessFirst customers – departing on United flights from Dublin to new York/newark and Washington/Dulles – access to Aer Lingus’ Gold Circle Lounge at Dublin Airport.”

United States next summer than Gatwick or Manchester airports,” said Vincent harrison, DAA Strategy Director previously. In total there will be 224 flights per week between Dublin and north America, underlining the importance of connectivity between the two. “north America is a key market for Ireland, as we are the largest recipient of US foreign direct investment and Irish firms are huge investors in the US,” said Robert hilliard, DAA Chief Operations Officer. “Both the United States and Canada are also important sources of inbound tourism so it’s also pleasing to see a strong growth in seat numbers from north America in 2013 as we celebrate The Gathering.” Though it may be a little early to be considering the impact the Gathering has had on traffic numbers, United Airlines remains positive and optimistic. “We are pleased with the performance of our Ireland services. While it is our company policy not to publish traffic data for individual routes, passenger

load factors on our Ireland services are broadly in line with those for our transatlantic routes as a whole – 82.8 per cent in May 2013,” says Yvonne Muldoon. “We are proud to be celebrating 15 years of serving Dublin. With non-stop flights to new York/newark and Washington/Dulles, customers not only have access to important business and tourism destinations but can conveniently connect to destinations throughout the United States, the Caribbean and across the Americas.”

the gathering In 2013, of course, the big issue is tourism, with The Gathering 2013 tourist initiative well underway. And having large international airlines regularly flying the routes between north America and Dublin in particular plays a huge role in Ireland’s tourism figures – the north American market can deliver up to one million visitors each year, a market which is distinguished from others both by the average length of stay and also the likelihood that these visitors will tour extensively around the

Total additional capacity means that throughout this summer, Dublin Airport will have 12 daily scheduled flights to nine different airports in the US. “Dublin Airport will have better connectivity to the

island. The United States alone is the second largest market for Irish tourism – 855,000 tourists from the US visited here in 2011, while roughly 114,000 Canadians arrived on our shores in the same year. What is clear is that in 2013, Irish tourism has experienced a strong first few months. Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have indicated the best first quarter north American performance experienced since 2004. Overall numbers grew by 7.4 per cent between January and March and niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, particularly welcomed the 16.7 per cent rise in visitors from north America. “It is encouraging to see growth from all market areas,” he said. “This year we believe that north America and mainland Europe hold the key to tourism growth. Last year was one of the strongest years for visitors from the

US to Ireland (after 2007) and these figures suggest we could be on course to achieve the best year ever from north America – when we hope to welcome over one million American visitors, spending about US$1 billion.”

air canada While services to and from America, and a proliferation of American airlines, have long been the norm at Dublin Airport, things haven’t been the same with regard to Canada, its Irish credentials and history notwithstanding. newfoundland in Canada has been described as “the most Irish place in the world outside of Ireland,” by historical author Tim Pat Coogan, such is the prevalence of Irish family names, music and even accents from a history of migration - much of it seasonal or temporary. IrishCanadians are the fourth largest ethnic group in Canada with 4,354,155 identifying

as Irish or of Irish descent, around 13 per cent of the total population. Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has recently welcomed the decision by Air Canada to build on their summer service between Dublin and Toronto – operating since 2002 – and launch a year round route between the two

countries from May 2014 with the new Air Canada rouge brand. “Air Canada’s decision to operate a year-round service to Dublin from next May is excellent news for both business and leisure travelers and underscores the strong links between Ireland and Canada,” said Vincent harrison. “Ireland is the fifth largest recipient of

Canadian investment, and there are strong historical and cultural connections between the two countries.” Like Lufthansa, Air Canada is a long-standing member of the Star Alliance, having also joined in 1997. The service to Dublin will be the first yearlong route between Ireland and Canada, and is the fourth European destination for the new brand, which will begin operations this July. “Air Canada has been serving Ireland since its predecessor, Trans-Canada Air Lines, first flew to Shannon in 1947. Today, there is a very strong market for both leisure customers and visiting friends and relatives, so this is an ideal market for our new leisure carrier, Air Canada rouge, to operate more cost effectively on a year-round basis,” added Ben Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Air Canada. While we remain only halfway through 2013, our relations with other countries around the globe is certainly strengthening. With flight routes between Ireland and a variety of countries across the world on the increase, connectivity between Ireland and abroad has never been higher. And, in a year in which developing links and relationships with current and potential partners abroad is high on the agenda, this has never been more important. The Star Alliance is certainly doing its bit.

Bringing the

Castle Back Life to

Having recently reopened its doors to the public after undergoing a massive renovation, Malahide Castle and Gardens has much to offer in the way of public and private functions, as it seeks to augment Malahide’s reputation as a popular tourist attraction. Kevin McElligott reports.

F

ollowing a s10.5 million redevelopment project, Malahide Castle and Gardens has recently reopened to the public. Co-funded by Fingal County Council and Fáilte Ireland, the Castle expects a busy summer ahead as it plans various corporate and ticketed events. Appointed by Fingal County Council to

operate the centre, Shannon Heritage has brought its expertise in customer service and event organisation, reinvigorating the experience for visitors. With over 50 years of experience in the management of tourist attractions, Shannon Heritage, with Chief Executive John Ruddle at the helm, are delighted to be taking on the operation of

Malahide Castle and Gardens, which is a natural fit with their existing portfolio of day visitor attractions and evening entertainment venues around the Shannon region. Joanne Pollard, Sales and Marketing Executive for Malahide Castle and Gardens, describes what is on offer to visitors: “Our experienced tour guides, hosts and admission agents deliver an interactive, personal experience of the Castle’s history and the social life of the Talbot family who lived there for 800 years. There has been so much documented about the Talbots and a new Castle exhibition on the ground floor interprets and relays these stories. When visitors purchase their tickets, they get access to the exhibition area prior to going on their guided tour which provides a complete experience for domestic and overseas tourists, gardening and special interest groups.”

Corporate Use Aside from serving its daytime visitors, Malahide Castle and Gardens also caters for the corporate community, having specific business-orientated rooms to accommodate presentations, meetings and conferences. All corporate bookings at Malahide Castle and Gardens take place in either the ‘Project

The Project Room, based on the ground floor of the visitor centre, can take up to 80 people theatre-style and is fully equipped with AV, interpretation units and Wi-Fi capabilities. Specially designed in a bright and wellventilated area, the room emanates an invigorating ambiance. Pollard identifies the diverse range of events held there: “We’ve had a number of different functions and events, from launches to Heritage Council meetings with delegates coming from across Europe, so there’s huge versatility with these rooms.” The Loft Room is a smaller space, located on the first floor of the courtyard building. With wooden beams and white floors, it has been described as a tranquil space useful for various board meetings and conferences on a smaller scale. These facilities may also become available to private customers in the future, as Pollard explains. “We are exploring the possibility of private entertainment and dining events at the

Castle but we’re still at the planning stage. Currently all entertainment and parties take place in the garden venues, which boast huge potential for future events.”

Garden Potential Within the 260-acre demesne, the Talbot Botanic Gardens boast almost 5,000 plant species including a fine collection of Australasian and Chilean plants; the most important collection of its kind after Kew Gardens in London. A visit to Malahide Castle and Gardens now includes a garden tour of the Botanical Gardens, the courtyard, a purpose-built retail section and an Avoca Café, which caters to the needs of group visits and corporate events. There are two designated areas for such gatherings – The West Lawn and the Walled Garden. Organisers hope that the summer will see great use of these gardens as Pollard explains: “There is huge potential with the gardens in terms of holding events, from having garden parties and marquees to different entertainments in the Walled Garden and also in the West Lawn, which is quite a large area at 22 acres.” Organised picnics, as well as outdoor theatre and music events are expected to attract the masses over the summer and the Castle has already catered for different groups, tailoring the service to match the needs of incoming clients. The Castle works in co-operation with local hotels to provide evening activities and dining for visiting conference groups

and in the summer these can include the use of the gardens for barbeques, marquee events or musical entertainment which can all be arranged with Shannon Heritage. It is hoped that corporate and charity bodies will see the benefits of reserving such a venue.

Incorporating the Village While the Castle has numerous attractions on offer, the day visitor centre remains its biggest operation. With an influx of visitors to the Castle, Pollard feels that Malahide is now a focal point in North County Dublin for tourism. “A lot of the work that we do is attracting coaches and groups out from various tour operators where they would incorporate Malahide Castle and Gardens into their itinerary, so that’s really where our core business is – providing a world-class visitor attraction for both domestic and overseas tourists, filling up our daily schedule tours and showcasing Malahide Castle and Gardens.” Pollard says one of the aims of Fingal County Council and Fáilte Ireland, when planning the Castle’s redevelopment was “to reintroduce Malahide as a destination.” So the project has incorporated the village as well. “There’s a new walkway that has been opened up between the Castle and the village which has shortened the time it takes to get between the two. So maybe it will take two hours to see the Castle and Gardens but why not spend a half day and go to visit Malahide Village and enjoy the shops, restaurants and boutiques there along with the scenic walks?” After more than 800 years of being admired, it seems that Malahide Castle, and indeed Malahide itself, will be attracting admirers for years to come.

Growing With The Times

istock.com/hadynyah

Tradition, innovation and knowledge are just a few words associated with the agrifoods sector of North Dublin. With commerce now an essential component of agriculture, we look at three companies – Donnelly, Keelings and Country Crest – and how they have evolved to meet the needs of today’s economy.

O

ne of Ireland's most important indigenous industries, the agrifoods sector employs tens of thousands and incorporates the produce of over one hundred thousand farms all over the country. The Fingal area of North Dublin is the main agricultural area in the county and is home to some of the country's major companies specialising in horticulture and fruit and veg production. The expertise in growing, sourcing, marketing and selling that has advanced over time has seen small family businesses and farms in North Dublin evolve into major companies with established brands and distribution channels such as Keelings and Donnelly. Family tradition has meant that succeeding generations have acquired expertise and combined it with modern and innovative techniques of nurturing and cultivating the land. The image of the impoverished farmer gradually faded as Ireland's economy grew and, realising the benefits of agriculture, some of these companies like Country Crest are taking their knowledge overseas to help third world economies to blossom in their own right.

Donnelly Keeping It Fresh As Donnelly Fresh Foods continue to produce the finest quality fruit and vegetables, their latest investments are keeping their retail partners at the forefront of convenience retailing. Based in St. Margaret's amidst the fertile fields of North County Dublin, and employing approximately 200 people, Donnelly Fresh Foods are purveyors of the freshest seasonal fruit and vegetables and are 100 per cent Irish owned. In more than 30 years in business, Donnelly have built their reputation on the quality of the fresh produce they source, the highest level of service they provide to their customers, and on their constant innovation and growth. There are many strands to the Donnelly business; Donnelly Fruit and Veg go to great lengths to select only the finest quality fruit and vegetables through a network of Irish growers and specially selected growers worldwide. They pack, prepare and deliver to stores nationwide every day. At Donnelly Food Service they

produce great tasting deli salads, ready to eat salad leaves, and prepared vegetables. Creating great food is at the heart of everything Donnelly does. It requires super ingredients prepared with care and a touch of imagination. Glan Arís is Donnelly's crate-washing operation, providing almost 10 million reusable crates for the food industry every year, saving unquantifiable amounts of cardboard and trees annually. In April 2012, Donnelly Chilled Foods Distribution commenced its partnership with BWG Foods (owners of the Spar, Eurospar and Mace Brands in the Republic of Ireland) and supplies a range of fresh and raw meats, poultry and dairy to all BWG Stores nationwide. Operating out of the old Dublin-Meath Growers Facility at Kilshane Cross, The Ward, Co Dublin, Donnelly’s Chilled Foods Distribution Centre manages the supply of chilled and fresh produce to approximately 900 Spar, Eurospar, Mace and XL stores across Ireland. Speaking at the opening of the Distribution Centre, Willie O’Byrne, Managing Director of

BWG Foods said, “our exclusive arrangement with Donnelly means we now have established a consolidated chilled food supply chain, delivering over 900 fresh lines to our retailers right across the country. These significant investments are designed to keep our retailers at the forefront of convenience retailing, ensuring they continue to meet and exceed the expectations of customers. Our new nationwide chilled supply chain will allow us to deliver the freshest produce in a timely and consistent manner and we’re pleased that two Irish-owned and operated companies can partner to provide a market-leading logistics solution.” Donnelly also have their own label under which they sell their fruit, vegetables and salads. Their beautiful distinctive trucks and vans are likely to be familiar to everybody in the Fingal area and surrounds! The Donnelly Fresh Foods brand initially focuses on two ranges – ‘in-season’ fresh fruit and vegetables from Ireland and around the world, and a range of fresh bagged salads. Both ranges are on-shelf and are available nationwide. Ciarán Donnelly, Managing Director of Donnelly Fruit & Veg, said the new brand marks the start of a significant new phase for the company. “We are very excited about introducing a consumer branded fresh produce range to the market, particularly a range with a unique selling point – all the produce will always be in season,” he said. “Our new trucks and vans have created quite a ‘wow’ on the roads and the reaction to our new bagged fresh salad range has been great. So as we continue to add to the range with our new in season produce, we are looking forward to increased sales.”

Keelings – Delivering Quality Keelings are one agrifoods business that infuses passion into every facet of their work and it is this devotion to quality that David Keeling with Irish rugby star Tommy Bowe

Their current line of produce, aptly known as the ‘Love to Grow’ product range, focuses primarily on Irish grown produce and includes fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, apples and cherries; Salads and lettuces such as romaine hearts, romaine heads, Chinese leaves, iceberg, peppers, aubergines and pumpkins; and flowers, mainly lillies and sunflowers. Headquartered in St. Margaret’s, Co. Dublin, the company grows most of their produce there, although their lettuces, flowers and pumpkins are grown in their

farm in Castlebellingham, Co. Louth. “We’ve approximately 500 acres, with over 15 hectares of glasshouse for our strawberries, peppers and aubergines,” explains David Keeling, Managing Director of Retail at Keelings. “My grandparents, William and Christina Keeling started the business, growing a range of fresh produce. They built it from nothing into a substantial business in the 1960s with a turnover of s100k per annum,” explains Keeling. Having established their existing farm in 1926, they have gradually expanded on their range of produce over time. Rhubarb was an important crop for the family in the early days until strawberries became a prime focus in the mid-thirties and by 1950 bramley’s apples were another core component of the Keelings success. With berries today being prime produce, the decades between 1960 and 2000 were pivotal years in terms of innovation. Investment in the construction of greenhouses between 1960 and 1990 allowed Keelings to improve the quality of homegrown fruit and tomatoes. It was later on, with the introduction of more technologically advanced greenhouses, that Keelings were able to extend growing season from March to December which really boosted their reputation as leaders in soft fruit production.“We’re constantly assessing the market for innovative ideas. We believe innovation to be key in driving consumption of healthy fresh produce. We’re trialling 27 strawberry varieties to find even sweeter and tastier strawberries than we already grow,” explains Keeling. The company has, along with their range of produce, grown in size and scope. The seventies

and eighties saw ambitious efforts to ship, source and distribute produce from around the world into Ireland, Britain and other European markets. Although innovative practices have allowed them to extend the growing season when supply runs short, Keelings import from fellow growers internationally. Keeling explains the high standards that the company maintain, “We’ve strict guidelines on who we work with and we visit our growers on a regular basis to ensure the high quality of the fruit we supply under the Keelings brand.” Today, working with over 2,000 people around the world, the Irishowned family business maintain a supply base in 42 countries spread over six continents, not bad for a family business that started tilling the soil on a farm in Donabate over a century ago.

Country Crest Cultivating Knowledge With a vast history in agriculture and farming, some enterprises in North Dublin, such as Country Crest, are passing on their knowledge and expertise to developing countries around the world

of family tradition that has evolved to suit today’s economy. Fourth generation growers, Michael and Gabriel Hoey originally set up Country Crest to grow and pre-pack fresh potatoes for the retail sector. Since then, they have grown into one of the biggest suppliers of fresh vegetables and are a leading manufacturer and supplier of vegetable accompaniments and prepared wholesome meals. Recognising the importance of agriculture within a developing community is what led the Hoey brothers to commit to various corporate social responsibilities in recent years as commercial manager Tony Doyle points out, “I suppose the overriding reason why we got involved was the fact that Michael and Gabriel have been involved in agriculture and food production their whole lives, they’ve had reasonably good lives out of it and they wanted to give something back.”

Favourable climatic conditions and fertile soil have led generations of farmers to produce the crops that have become synonymous with Irish culture; potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, the list goes on. Agriculture saw the nation gradually evolve from an impoverished colony struggling to subsist to an affluent republic with abundant resources. This change saw farming become a major industry on to itself. Recognising the growing context of commerce within agriculture, Country Crest was formed.

The first project came about due to the 2007/2008 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year scheme. Michael Hoey was a finalist and part of a team which was invited to go out to the impoverished Caribbean country of Haiti with a mission of finding a business approach towards solving developmental problems. A project was engineered, revolving around Country Crest’s area of expertise; a small developmental farm was set up in coordination with the Soul of Haiti Foundation where agricultural equipment, technology and expertise were supplied to enable native farmers to grow vegetables and bring them to market.

Established by the Hoey brothers in 1994, the company is a product of almost 100 years

Doyle explains the importance of the project for the Haitian community, “Our aim is to

educate the locals, enabling them to grow food in a sustainable, economic manner. We’ve employed local agronomists and local university graduates to maintain and manage the farm unit so it’s all about community involvement, empowering them to make decisions, allowing us to observe their progress and offer guidance when they want it.” After the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the project is back on course to meet its targets. “We’re growing and marketing bell peppers, chili peppers, tomatoes, water melons, cabbage, carrots and maize, so farmers are earning money for their produce and are able to reinvest back into the farm and in the community,” explains Doyle. Another project which Country Crest is involved with was initially brought to their attention by the Fingal Dublin Chamber and the Lesotho Embassy in Dublin, as Tony Doyle recalls, “We were asked to go out to look at potato production in the highlands in Lesotho and give some learning and expertise to small potato farmers and vegetable growers.” Both projects are experiencing great levels of success thanks to Country Crest’s commitment to community development as Doyle explains, “Our feelings were that we’re in a good position here in Ireland, let’s give some of this expertise and knowledge to those who need it, who will use it and grow with it.” The ultimate goal of both projects is for Country Crest to be satisfied with the economic and community development that their efforts have contributed to and that they and their partners can gradually step aside. Doyle says, “By then the communities will have developed to a stage where they will be able to take the project over themselves, run it themselves and get on with it and we’ll be able to bow out gracefully.”

PayPal

means business As PayPal looks to fill 1,050 positions at its new centre in Dundalk, there will be a positive knock-on effect for the company’s Dublin headquarters and the wider economy, writes Joseph O’ Connor.

L

ouise Phelan has had a busy twelve months. As PayPal’s Vice President of Global Operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Phelan has been at the heart of both securing and recruiting 1,050 positions at PayPal’s new centre of excellence in Dundalk, County Louth. The global online payments company has been in Ireland for the past ten years operating from its state-ofthe-art facility in Ballycoolin Business Park, Blanchardstown. Its recent expansion into Dundalk is an indication of its commitment to its presence in Ireland and its confidence in Ireland’s workforce. Founded in 1998, PayPal has 23 million active registered accounts, is available in 190 markets and supports payments in 25 currencies. PayPal states its aim is to create a better shopping experience and works to transform the way people think about e-commerce. Phelan outlines the significance of the company’s latest expansion: “It has been fundamental to ensuring the success of our business. We had so many talented team-mates move from our Dublin site to Dundalk which inevitably set us up for success. We have welcomed our eBay colleagues into the building which allows us to work more closely with them to achieve our goal of connected commerce and ensuring that we continue to lead the world of payments.” Phelan is conscious to highlight the hard work carried out by PayPal’s existing staff up to now and how it is paying dividends. “Our expansion in Ireland was 100 per cent down to our people. We have so many talented and hardworking team-mates in Dublin and making the decision to open another site in Ireland was a no-brainer. We have full confidence in our people and knew we could make this happen. Our team-mates come from a wide variety of backgrounds and skillsets and they all bring something to our business.”

David O’Connor, County Manager, Fingal County Council, Louise Phelan, PayPal, Siobhan Moore, President, Fingal Dublin Chamber and Tony Lambert, CEO, Fingal Dublin Chamber.

Although the new positions are based in Dundalk, there will undoubtedly be a positive knock-on effect for the Blanchardstown office. The company already employs 1,450 people in Dublin and Phelan describes how the existing staff can benefit. “Our Dundalk site compliments the efforts and hard work of our existing team-mates in Blanchardstown. We were also able to provide opportunities for team-mates who wanted to progress in their careers and move to Dundalk to provide mentoring roles to our new team-mates. We have so many excellent processes and procedures in Blanchardstown that it made sense to roll these out in Dundalk. All our team-mates are empowered to make decisions to better our business and in turn improve our customer service.” Phelan’s hard work in securing the second operations centre has not gone unnoticed. Last October, she became the first woman to receive the Sir Michael Smurfit Business Achievement

Award. Phelan was chosen in recognition of the important role she has played as a business leader during one of the most challenging economic periods in Irish history, and her success in securing significant jobs and investment through PayPal’s operations in Ireland. “I was absolutely honoured to be nominated for this award. When it was announced that I had won, I was speechless,” Phelan says. “It is one of the proudest moments in my career so far and I attribute the success to my team in PayPal. Behind every successful leader is a strong, determined and hardworking team.” Phelan’s year will continue in much the same way as it began; both exciting and challenging. She has the task of filling the 1,050 positions at its new centre, but remains focused on the job at hand. “Our main focus is to recruit for the 1,000 jobs in Dundalk. Our business is growing exponentially and we are continuing to innovate, so this year will be an exciting and challenging year.”

Linking Academia with Industry The LINC Centre at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown is offering a supportive, safe and dynamic working environment for business start-ups.

T

he Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) engages with many industry sectors regionally, nationally and globally, creating new and dynamic partnerships, ensuring the Institute has an economic and civic impact. These sectors include IT, digital media, telecommunications, service industries, manufacturing and engineering services, horticulture and social care sectors. The LINC (Learning & Innovation Centre) is ITB’s tangible link between the Institute and industry, making accessible the skills and expertise of the Institute to industry in a professional and cost effective manner. The Institute through the LINC collaborates with these sectors through:  C ollaborative research projects supporting the Company in the development of its research and development agenda  Bespoke training programmes supporting companies with competence development requirements to meet their own goals  Development and enhancement of existing academic programmes to meet future skills needs of the industry sectors  Supporting start-up companies in the development and realisation of their business plans through facilities and support programmes such as the New Frontiers programme.

Enterprise Support Research shows that many start-ups fail in their early stages due to lack of funding and isolation. Centres such as the LINC offer a supportive, safe and dynamic working environment, where new companies can base themselves as they start out. Companies can access the range of enterprise supports in place from the Institute, while also networking with like-minded entrepreneurs who face similar challenges on a daily basis. Being located on the campus at ITB means

36

that the incubation companies and the academic community can foster critical strategic links. One of the key supports delivered through the LINC is the New Frontiers Entrepreneur Development Programme, funded by Enterprise Ireland. This is a one-year three phase enterprise support programme, which enables entrepreneurs to develop their business concept. Participants are provided with a hot desk space in the LINC for the duration of the programme. A range of valuable and relevant supports are also provided as part of the programme, including workshops, peer networking, one-to-one business clinics, management training and development, and introduction to funders and support agencies, such as Enterprise Ireland and the County Enterprise Boards. This programme harnesses the drive and entrepreneurial skills of these participants and combines them with the skills of the partner institutions in key areas such as e-Business, Information Technology, Informatics, Engineering and Communications. Over the last twelve months, the LINC has supported over 80 start-up businesses through the different programmes, seminars, mentoring and drop-in clinics available through the LINC.

Research Research continues to be a core activity in the Institute with the main focus on applied research. Researchers at the Institute work with industry sectors to support the development of commercial projects from an R&D base. Funding for

the research comes from Enterprise Ireland (Innovation partnership scheme, the Commercialisation Fund and Innovation Vouchers), IRCSET Post-Graduate Scholarship and an AIB/ITB seed capital fund. The main research areas being developed at the Institute include:  Computer graphics, machine vision, robotics  Computational and Functional Linguistics  Data Analytics  Network Security and Digital Forensics  Graphics and Gaming  Energy & Environmental Engineering Research (EERG)  Magnetic and Machine Research  eLearning Research  Social Sciences Research  Language Education and Cultural Studies Research

Industry Training and Academic Involvement The Institute works with many companies in the development of bespoke training programmes, and the enhancement of existing academic programmes, to support specific competence development requirements. These include technical courses for Intel and IBM, supervisory and management skills training for Dublin Airport Authority and Citizens Information Services, and skills training for the GAA. The Institute also works through industry groups on specific skills shortages, such as ICT skills, supporting the upskilling and reskilling of people within the region.

Keeping it Clean Contract cleaning company Derrycourt Cleaning Specialists are receiving accolades at home and abroad in recognition of their high-quality, innovative cleaning solution services.

T

he cleaning industry is a lot more complicated and diverse than one might think. There is an ever increasing need for specialist types of cleaning and hygiene control and the idea of a cleaning company simply dispatching employees with a bucket and mop is an old-fashioned, outdated one. It is Derrycourt's recognition of and response to these industry shifts that has seen them weather the economic storm and become recognised as a trailblazer in their industry. It doesn't happen by accident though, and an organisation needs to have a clearly laid-out strategy if it is to grow at a sustainable pace. This is something that Avril McCarthy, General Manager at Derrycourt recognises. “The main part of my role encompasses customer satisfaction, innovative service delivery, bid management and ensuring as an organisation we are clear of our strategic direction and we are all working in line with the strategic plan for the organisation.”

Derrycourt are afterall the cleaning specialists, and believe that our customers should be able to concentrate on their core area of expertise and we concentrate on ours.” Derrycourt's strategic plan has seen it grow massively as an organisation as it moves into ancillary services related to cleaning. Originally set up in 1992 as a family business by Ann and Martin O'Hanlon, it has now become one of the top contract cleaning companies in the country and provides a range of products and services relating to hygiene including consumables, feminine hygiene, pest control, water cooler services, porters and janitors. They provide these services to every industry, but specialise in the healthcare sector.

The inroads that Derrycourt has made in providing cleaning services to the healthcare sector has seen them recognised both in Ireland and abroad for the quality of service they provide. As McCarthy says, "We have not only received awards within Ireland, but we have been recognised for our standards of excellence in the UK and Ireland for services provided in Ireland. We were the first Irish company to take the Golden Service 'Healthcare Award' for Ireland and UK out of the UK for our services at the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street." Flourishing Firm The dynamic corporate law firm of Baily Homan Smyth McVeigh has been steadily growing over the past 12 months. Fingal Chamber spoke to them about their client-focused ethos and their plans for the future.

W

ith almost 40 years’ experience between them, Brian Baily, Mark Homan, Giles G. Smyth and Joe McVeigh have established a successful corporate law firm in just over a year. Having previously worked closely together in a Dublin corporate law firm, they decided to launch their own firm in April 2012. “We decided that there was a point in our careers - and a point in the economy - at which there was an opportunity to take the energies and dynamics we had together and offer it to the business community in Ireland,” says Smyth.

The partners’ philosophy for the firm is one of focus on the client and the client’s objectives, and providing a professional service in an efficient and transparent way.” The firm's legal services extend across a range of areas – corporate, property, litigation, insolvency and private client – with each partner having their own field of expertise within these. Additionally, the firm has a large and varied client base. “We have a very wide portfolio in terms of business clients including large companies, both domestic and international SMEs, banks and semi-state bodies and we also advise other professionals including engineers, architects, accountants, and medical professionals,” says Homan. “We also have private clients as well, individuals with requirement for legal advice, be it purchasing a house, selling a house or employment or litigation issues in a personal capacity.” Since the young, vibrant firm opened its doors a year ago, business growth has

44

been steady and it has been necessary to recruit two new solicitors to help manage the workload and maintain the exemplary service they set out to provide. “We set about looking for and recruiting the calibre of person from the type of firms that we were used to dealing with so that we would have solicitors that would be aligned both in expertise and qualifications, and who would also be a cultural match for the firm,” says Smyth. The partners' philosophy for the firm is one of focus on the client and the client's objectives, and providing a professional service in an efficient and transparent way. Providing a tailored service is at the core of the partners' client focused ethos. “I like to see our clients in their businesses to help me understand their business,” says Homan. “The more we understand about their business the better equipped we are to advise if any problems or opportunities arise.” This readiness to visit their clients on home turf has led to the development of a nationwide client base for the firm – an ambition of the partners. “We want to be service providers of choice for professionals and businesses in the whole of Ireland,” says Smyth. “Obviously

we're based in Dublin but we have a client base that spreads the country and that's very important to us.” This growing client base is also attracted by another distinguishing feature of the firm – big firm, partner based advice at more competitive fee rates. Smyth believes the support they have received from their clients and contacts is largely due to an appreciation of the need for a firm like this. “They themselves probably saw a need or requirement for other players at a senior level, but maybe not charging such senior rates,” he says. “And I think that is what has clients and contacts saying good things about us because they have had a good experience when they have come here, and that is what we're trying to do.” Despite their success to date, the partners recognise that this is not a time to rest on their laurels and are conducting a brand review to ensure they continue to grow their client base and business. However, with plans to add at least two more solicitors to the team within the next 12 months, the future is looking bright for Baily Homan Smyth McVeigh.

Joe Duffy Motor Group | Commercial Profile

Investing in the Customer With the Irish Motor Industry suffering badly in recent years, it’s reassuring to see dealer groups, such as the Joe Duffy Motor Group, not only surviving but flourishing.

Gavin Hydes, CEO, Joe Duffy Motor Group, accepting a Deloitte Best Managed Companies Award this year.

T

he Irish motor Industry's most difficult trading conditions since the 1980s sadly resulted in a number of long established dealerships closing their doors with significant job losses in recent years. However, despite the enormous challenges created for the retail motor industry, Joe Duffy Motor Group has continued to expand and develop, becoming the fastest growing motor retail group in Ireland. The group has also been the recipient of a number of accolades along the way; most recently a European Business Award and Deloitte Best Managed Companies Award in 2012 and 2013 respectively. The Group now has six flagship dealerships in Dublin and is retail partner to some of the most prestigious marques in the motoring world including BMW, MINI, Audi, Mazda, Porsche, Volvo, Land Rover, SEAT and Volkswagen. “We believe the foundations of our success lie in the Group’s stringent financial controls, prudent investment strategy and robust business model which has resulted in the business remaining profitable in what is a very challenging economic environment,” explains Gavin Hydes, CEO of Joe Duffy Motor Group. “Whilst the new car market in Ireland is currently 20 per cent behind 2012, we are forecasting our turnover for

the year to be in excess of €100 million - an increase of 25 per cent.”

Investing for Success Making wise investments, the Group has focused on several areas that build on the quality of their service. One such area that they have assigned significant importance to is their manpower. With the mantra, 'It’s Our People That Make The Difference', the Group continues to invest in additional training and development programmes for their growing workforce of almost 200, aligning them with the Group's culture of customer service while equipping them with the necessary skills to enable career progression within the Joe Duffy Motor Group. “We have dramatically increased the number of training courses available to all staff, and have significantly increased our investment in training and development programmes”, explains Hydes. “It is our belief that engaged people deliver value to our customers, customers bring growth to the business and growth offers opportunities to our people and allows them a career development path that is unmatched in the motor industry.”

Maintaining Loyalty Over the years, Joe Duffy has been making significant efforts to constantly develop and improve their customer satisfaction strategy,

going above and beyond their manufacturing partner's programmes to develop their own group-wide programme that sets them apart from competitors and creates a unique value proposition for their customers. “The underlying concept is to create and maintain customers for life through the development of unique products and services that have the customer experience at their core,” explains Hydes. “By making the customer experience as seamless as possible and increasing interaction between the customer and our brand, our aim is to create engaged customers who regularly provide their feedback to us as we continue to improve. This in turn creates long-standing customer loyalty and repeat business for our Group.”

One such area that they have assigned significant importance to is their manpower.” Service plans have been engineered to satisfy customers and retain their loyalty by allowing them to spread the costs of servicing their vehicle over a number of years, thus making vehicle ownership more enjoyable and affordable. The service plans represent the culmination of a number of years of planning, research and engagement with customers, gathering feedback on areas where the Group can improve and offer more value. Hydes explains the significance of innovative service plans for maintaining high customer satisfaction levels: “The Group will be the first in Ireland to roll out individually tailored Dealer Level Service Plans and we believe that this product will help to increase retention levels further in the respective businesses whilst allowing customers to maintain tight control of their own servicing costs.” Having not only weathered the storm but also expanded to new heights, the Joe Duffy Motor Group has, with better days forecast, worked their way into a strong position.

ingal Dublin Chamber invited all businesses in the Fingal Region to participate in the Fingal Business Excellence Awards 2012. These annual awards, founded in 2002, celebrate business excellence in the Fingal Region and pay tribute to the talent, drive, innovation and success of the business community in the area. The Awards are organised by the Fingal Dublin Chamber and recognise the efforts of companies to promote excellence in the quality of their products, services and customer care. “The Fingal Business Excellence Awards are now in their tenth year and continue to be the premier and most prestigious awards event for businesses operating in the Fingal Region. This year’s twenty-one awards celebrated and recognised the best businesses and organisations across all sectors,” says Chamber President Siobhan Moore. There were twenty awards this year and the competition was open to all businesses/organisations, both big and small, doing business in the Fingal region whether in retail,

manufacturing, services or tourism/hospitality sectors. Fingal Dublin Chamber’s President Siobhan Moore felt they could not let the year go by without recognising the really superb efforts of Catherine Walsh who won two Paralympic medals in the paracycling event in the London Paralympics. In recognition of this fantastic achievement the Chamber awarded her the Sports Person of the Year Excellence Award. Mayor Cian O’Callaghan was the Guest of Honour at the prestigious black-tie Gala Awards Presentation Evening sponsored by Fingal County Council and hosted by RTÉ’s Marty Whelan on Friday 16 November 2012 in the award winning Crowne Plaza Dublin Northwood, attended by four hundred and eighty people. This was the largest event ever organised by the Chamber. Spotcheck, the mystery shopping and business measurement-services company, carried out the judging and shortlisted entries under each award to go forward to the final.
