INTRODUCTION
Welcome “2016 is a historic year for the company”
6
Goffs
I
n this 150th year since Goffs was founded we have taken time to reflect on the many, many people and organisations that have shaped the company and made an impact on our fortunes. It is impossible to single out one person over another but if we were compiling a “Top 10” over the last decade one name would be certainly be included: Jim Bolger. Very much his own man, Jim bucked all trends in 2011 when he sold Banimpire and two foals from the first crop of Sea The Stars at our November Sale for €2.3 million, €850,000 and €800,000 respectively. Those moments proved a turning point for Goffs after a tumultuous 24 months caused by the worldwide economic crash that impacted Ireland so disastrously. His faith in our service was an example to many and gave us the opportunity to show what we could (still) do when we were given the opportunity. I cannot understate the importance of those sales at the time and it has been a pleasure to work for Jim on several occasions since. What makes the great man tick is eloquently explored by Donn McClean in one of the feature articles of this magazine. Airlie Stud is another name that has been vital to Goffs and for more than just ten years. Sonia Rogers remains a force to be reckoned with, alongside son Anthony, and their Orby and November drafts have been part of the fabric of Goffs for as long as only Sonia can really remember. She remains a valuable member of the Goffs Board, with a keen BS radar amongst her many attributes, whilst also being a most amusing story teller as our interview shows. Goffs UK may only be a few months old as it replaced DBS (or Doncaster Bloodstock Sales) in April but the Premier Sale, formerly the St Leger Yearling Sales, has been around since 1963. Carl Evans is a regular modern day attendee as sales reporter and analyst for EBN, and he traces the tale of a sale that has genuinely punched
above its weight for years and is only now really getting the recognition it deserves following years and years of quality graduates, many of whom made what can best be described as “commercial” prices. The role of an auction house, bloodstock or otherwise, is relatively straightforward: attract the lots to sell, promote to buyers and then auction. But hopefully these pages will expand on those simple steps with reports and analysis of another hugely successful London Sale in June (how often is a Classic winner sold mid-season?), the international reach of Goffs through our network of agents from Sydney to Lexington to Tokyo, and virtually everywhere in between that may have an interest in buying a thoroughbred in the UK or Ireland, and the wonderful success of Goffs graduates at Royal Ascot this year of which wins for our Doncaster Breeze-Up graduates were probably most notable for a number of reasons. News, views and reports make up this latest Goffs magazine and our intention is to convey the colour, background and variety of the Goffs year in Ireland, the UK and across the globe in an easy-to-read, easy-to-view manner. Of course the only way to fully engage with the Goffs experience is to visit. January to December; Kildare, Doncaster, London, Aintree, Punchestown, Leopardstown; take your pick. Around 5,000 horses in every category at six locations realising in the region of €1.6 million and then racing around the world at the highest level. Goffs. Since 1866 …

GOFFS UK Rebrand
MEMOIRS OF AN AUCTION HOUSE… Goffs will mark its 150th anniversary year with the launch of Goffs - Memoirs Of An Irish Auction House on the eve of this year’s Orby Sale. Tracing the history of Ireland’s premier bloodstock auctioneers, author and Goffs Director of Sales Nick Nugent compiled the 240-page book that celebrates the many people and horses that have made significant contributions to the company since 1866. The book will be launched at the annual Orby Sale event at the K Club.
In April this year Doncaster Bloodstock Sales, known as DBS in recent years, was renamed Goffs UK. The timing of the rebrand in what is the 150th year since Robert J Goff was appointed official auctioneer to the Turf Club in Ireland was a natural step following on from the merger of Goffs and DBS in 2007. It has strengthened ties between both companies, with greater integration in key areas such as the auctioneering panels, client accounts, conditions of sale and customer experience. The management teams on both sides of the Irish Sea have continued to promote and run the sales in each location under the direction of Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby with each entity reporting into the Robert J Goff & Co plc Board which is chaired by Eimear Mulhern. GOFFS GROUP 1 SPONSORSHIP Goffs’ dual-destination involvement in Irish Champions Weekend continues on Sunday 11th September with the sponsorship of the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh. The Group 1 contest has a prize fund of €350,000. Consistently rated one of Europe’s leading two year races, it has been won by some of the biggest names in flat racing this century including Dubawi, New Approach, Dawn Approach, Mastercraftsman, Power, Gleneagles while the 2015 was won by Europe’s Champion 2YO Air Force Blue, presentation below.
Sale Worthy Of Champions…
Goffs Champions Sale at Leopardstown will be the opening event of Irish Champions Weekend once again this year. Held in association with Brown Thomas, Ireland’s most beautiful lifestyle store, this boutique sale of horses with form takes place in the parade ring prior to the first race at Leopardstown on Saturday 10th September. Irish Champions Weekend features five Group 1 races across two days at Leopardstown and the Curragh and attracts over 25,000 domestic and international racegoers. The Champions Sale has already achieved the highest average price ever at an Irish thoroughbred auction and achieved prices of €470,000, €450,000, €400,000 etc. It is one of four highly successful boutique horses in training sales linked to major race meetings that have been introduced in recent years by Goffs, with others in London during Royal Ascot, as well as National Hunt sales at the Punchestown and Aintree Festivals. The catalogue for the 2016 Goffs Champions Sale in association with Brown Thomas will be available online from 1st September on goffs.com

STAKES SUCCESS STARTS HERE… The 18th running of the £300,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes will take place on Thursday 18 August at the famous York Festival. The race has produced some very notable winners in its short history including sires Acclamation, Dark Angel and Wootton Bassett. Remarkably, half of the winners of the race have gone on to become stakes winners – the most recent being Tasleet, pictured right, who made it back to back wins for Shadwell and William Haggas last year and subsequently won the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his only 2016 start to date. Judging by this race’s roll of honour, it might pay to put the 2016 winner in your horses to follow.

PHOTOGRAPHER SARAH FARNSWORTH SELECTS HER FAVOURITE GOFFS SHOTS As a child Sarah Farnsworth was a keen amateur and used to follow her local pack of hounds, The Heythorp and The Warwickshire with her camera, a Minolta SLR film model, that she borrowed from her parents. She rode until about the age of 13 but was, in her own words, not brave enough to hunt. During that time she also helped out at her parents business Grimes House Gallery, a place she says was filled with beautiful things. “I grew up in the shop,” she recalls. “It was
where I first learned about light, paint and composition. My parents also used to ask me to help them give names to any untitled works.” This side of the business helped her consider her subject. It was here that she first perused the books of Jim Meads, who she calls the David Bailey of the hunting world. She bought all his books. At 18 Sarah went to went to art college and did a

t is a matter of honour for breeders and foal pinhookers to produce or buy a foal that becomes ‘a Donny yearling’. With strength, precocity and the ability to win races as a two-year-old, these fledgling racehorses have been a staple of trainers’ yards across Britain and Ireland for more than 50 years. The pick are offered in August at the two-day Premier Yearling Sale, held in Doncaster and now one of Europe’s most successful bloodstock auctions. Premier in name and nature, it has evolved through a series of minor changes and grown in stature by virtue of an evolving list of impressive racecourse successes that have made it a magnet for yearling buyers and consignors. Bloodstock Sales (DBS), it was known as the St Leger Sale until gaining its current name in 2010, and was for many years held during September’s St Leger race meeting. The move in 2008 to purposebuilt premises, half a mile from the original location, gave the company and its sales a bright new future, and, with foreign investors boosting the yearling market, the Premier Sale has moved smoothly through the gears while gaining a higher profile. With these changes has come a slightly expanded remit for the Donny yearling, and so while the Premier Sale still offers the butty, sharp type etched ‘early two-year-old’, it is also a source of later-maturing horses with eye-catching pedigrees and the prospect of peaking as three-year-olds. These days you don’t just
Our niche is that we sell individuals rather than paper pedigrees. find likely Brocklesby Stakes winners, but Group-race prospects, Classic aspirants and potential stallions. Ironically, it was the exit from Doncaster of a rival sales company which led to the formation of DBS and resulted in the Premier Sale of today. Harry Beeby, chairman of Goffs UK, and who joined the company in 1964, says: “Tattersalls held its principal yearling sale, the Houghton, at Glasgow Paddocks in Doncaster until 1957, when it was decided to consolidate its operation in Newmarket. “In those days the St Leger race meeting
was a public holiday in Doncaster, and people would take a house for a week. Trade was lost when the sale ended, and so, in 1962, the leader of Doncaster Corporation, Alderman Cammidge, approached [racehorse trainer] Willie Stephenson with a view to creating a new sales company – he and fellow trainer Ken Oliver held a couple of small sales that year, and two more the following year when yearlings were included. “They [Stephenson and Oliver] thought there was a niche for selling sharp, early two-year-old types – something Goffs Magazine

different from the yearlings on offer at the Houghton Sale. From day one they received tremendous support from the Irish, who had always enjoyed coming to Doncaster, and also from northern trainers. The number of southern trainers who attended began to grow as success started to come on the racecourse.” A seminal moment for the St Leger Sale came in 1967 when a yearling colt by Hard Tack changed hands for 3,200gns. Named Right Tack, he became a leading two-yearold whose victories included the Middle Park Stakes, and one year later the first horse to win both the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas. If that was regarded as a fluke by cynics, the emergence two years later of ace sprinter Sandford Lad, winner of the Nunthorpe Stakes and Prix de l’Abbaye, was further proof that Doncaster could be a source of top-class racehorses. Beeby says: “Gradually we were getting betterquality yearlings, as highlighted in 1973 by the sale of a Grey Sovereign colt who made 42,000gns, a sum that stood as a record for
the sale for a number of years.” So after ten years of working towards a regular slot in the bloodstock calendar, the St Leger Sale had established itself and quality was on the rise. Beeby says: “We emphasised that we were selling individuals, rather more so than paper [pedigrees], and that niche has gradually evolved.” That emphasis on the yearling, rather than its family, suited trainers who were trying to buy affordable stock for their stables, and while no licence holder would turn down a blue-blood with Derbywinning potential, the hard-knocking colt or fast filly who can do a job has always been vital ammunition for a yard. Catridge Farm Stud’s David Powell, a long-standing vendor and consignor at Doncaster, offers an anecdote that conveys the importance one trainer put on the horse, not its family. Powell says: “Captain Ryan Price used to say, ‘You can’t train effing paper’, and wouldn’t open his catalogue until he had looked at a yearling.” Powell, whose first draft from his
Wiltshire-based farm was sold at DBS in 1984, has an affection for the Premier Sale borne out of memorable results and happy social occasions. He says: “I really enjoy Doncaster, and the Premier Sale is my favourite, partly because I have lots of happy memories. The highlight was selling Somnus, then Kyllachy, and finally Acclamation in successive years – they all won the sales race and none were bought as foals.” Drive past the site where DBS first started selling and you will see a demolition job in progress, but memories it invoked live on. Powell says: “I know the old sales complex was starting to become run down, but we had some great times there, especially during the St Leger race meeting [when selling would take place before and after racing]. “There were some pretty colourful sights, and I will always remember one lady trainer who came back from the races plastered and just bid away – which was marvellous for the vendors.” Changing faces as well as changing Goffs Magazine

fashions in bloodstock have been part of the Premier Sale story, but not every novel idea has stood the test of time. Harry Beeby recalls: “In 1981 we created a select session and sold our first 100,000gns yearling, a colt called Gamon who was consigned from Timmy Hyde’s Camas Park in Ireland. This select session lasted about seven years until we decided the best person to select a yearling was not us, but the buyers, and so we put the lot together again.” Powell has seen changes too, saying: “When I started bloodstock agent Jack Doyle ruled the roost [his son Peter and grandson Ross have carried on his legacy] alongside several agencies – such as the BBA, CBA, Anglo Irish and Heron Bloodstock – that have all gone.” Also gone is Havana Horse, a Londonbased agency run by Andy Smith, who had a Monaco address and a penchant for St Leger yearlings. Smith bought the top
lot four years running from 1998 – with prices from 60,000gns to 105,000gns – and again in 2005 (140,000gns), although his company was liquidated five years later. Powell says: “It’s a very different game. We used to sell to trainers who would look at a yearling and know what failings they could get away with, while still being able to train the horse. Now we sell to bloodstock agents who want the perfect horse, which is one reason [Middleham trainer] Mark Johnston is so good. He’s a vet who buys his own yearlings and can forgive a blemish knowing he will still be able to train it. “The Donny yearling’ I used to know has also changed. They used to be small, strong, two-year-old types, whereas now there are bigger horses that will train on to be three-year-olds. The bar’s been raised, and that’s good, and there’s no doubt a lot of Premier Sale horses could get into Book Goffs Magazine

In the last ten years the top lot has been bought by Shadwell, Godolphin, Coolmore (three times), Qatar Racing and, last year, by Tony Nerses on behalf of Blue Diamond Stud. Nerses’s £280,000 purchase of a Paco Boy filly has looked better with each victory achieved this year by full brother Galileo Gold, who landed the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes before midsummer. When such gems can be mined from a sale its popularity increases, and Powell says: “As a consignor it is harder to get into the sale these days – it is more popular than ever, and there are more Irish consignors than in the past. That’s good for Goffs UK, but it does make it tougher for us.” He is expecting to sell eight horses at the Premier Sale, and five at the oneday Silver Sale which takes place the day after the Premier Sale concludes. This second-tier event is not to be dismissed, says Powell, who adds: “There are always some very nice yearlings in the Silver Sale, and I have noticed that while quite a number of agents leave before it begins, you get a lot of trainers in attendance, and that’s a good thing.”

INTERVIEW
34
Goffs In Goffs 150th anniversary year, it is appropriate to focus on Airlie Stud who were Goffs leading vendors for three consecutive years in the late 1970s and have offered a top consignment every year since. From 1984 the stud has been under the control and management of Sonia Rogers- recognised as one of the most important breeders in the world but not the easiest person to interview. It is not that she gives nothing away, quite the opposite in fact. Two hours in her company delivers enough stories for a short biography but re-telling many of them would, at best, end one of our careers and quite possibly both. Indeed the pressure is on the interviewer to assess afterwards what Mrs Rogers intended for print and, more importantly, what she did not. The hunter becomes the hunted. In 1965 Sonia married Captain Tim Rogers whose family had already enjoyed a long association with Goffs. During the First World War, the cessation of racing in England led to an influx of trainers to the Curragh, including J.T ‘Jack’ Rogers, who had been a successful amateur rider and trained on a small scale in England. His

first recorded purchases at Goffs came in August 1915 when he bought two yearlings by Acclaim, one for 10 guineas, the other for 22 guineas. Rogers was based at Crotanstown Lodge on the Curragh and was leading trainer in Ireland from 1935 to 1937. He also operated a breeding establishment at nearby Athgarvan Stud. In 1935 he won all the Irish Classics with just two horses. Museum won the Irish 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger and the filly Smokeless took the Irish 1000 Guineas and Oaks. In
a 10-year period he trained five winners of Ireland’s richest race for two-year-olds, the Phoenix Plate. Jack retired at the end of 1937 and his son Bryan saddled Eyrefield to win the Phoenix Plate in his father’s colours in 1939. In 1940 Bryan was killed in action so Rogers resumed training, only to die himself in June that same year. His younger son Darby then set up his own stable and sent out eight classic winners, including the 1946 Irish Derby winner Bright News. Darby’s sons Tim and Mickey would both go on to great success, the former as a stud master, the latter as a trainer. As is often the case in the thoroughbred world Tim Rogers found a wife whose credentials matched his own. Sonia’s mother, Elizabeth Burke, owned Stackallan Stud in Co. Meath. In 1971 Stackallan topped the vendors table for the fourth consecutive year when selling 10 lots at Goffs for 107,700gns, thus becoming the first vendor in Ireland or Britain to achieve sales of more than 100,000gns at a yearling sale. Sonia Rogers was raised between Leicestershire and Tourin House,

Cappoquin Co Waterford, which her mother and stepfather rented when they first came to Ireland to hunt the West Waterford Hounds. It was then that Sonia developed her first interest in pedigrees, although not of thoroughbred horses but of foxhounds, under the tutelage of Ikey Bell, a legendary Master of both the Galway Blazers and the Kilkenny Foxhounds. Not long after, she soon spread her wings. “I was educated entirely to get married. I left school at 15. I was expelled actually. I told my mother, I’ve got a friend who is going to Italy, to Florence, and I’ll go with her and learn history of art. As a teenager I therefore learnt history of art in Italy, taught in French.”
After a year at a finishing school in Paris “with every future Duchess in England”. Sonia travelled further afield and had stints washing cars in Palo Alto, California and working as a housemaid in Banff in Canada. She then worked in the BBA in London, compiling pedigrees, before Cloghran Stud and with her mother who had, by then, bought Stackallan Stud in Co. Meath. There was then another change in direction, “My brother got married in South Africa and I went out for the wedding and was offered the job as lady-in waiting to the wife of the Governor General of Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia
and Nyasaland, which I did for a year and a half. I then got engaged to a minister in Ian Smith’s government” That engagement did not last, enabling marriage to Tim Rogers whose story could also fill an entire magazine. Arguably the most significant influence on the Irish industry in 1960s and the 1970s, as well as a driving force behind the stallion taxation exemption, he had been ADC to Winston Churchill during the Second World War. In 1965 Airlie was home to two stallions that had raced for Churchill, High Hat and Vienna. Not only did Sonia arrive that year but so did Europe’s most expensive stallion, the 1964 dual Derby winner Santa Goffs Magazine

Claus, which had been trained by Tim’s brother Mickey. Airlie Stud, located in Lucan, still belonged to the Barnett family but Rogers was on the verge of building a significant empire. His greatest skill lay in finding partners and investors and, that same year, he bought both Grangewilliam and Simmonstown Studs. The first stallion at Grangewilliam was Sea Hawk then Atan, the sire of Sharpen Up, who stood for £100. Habitat was definitely the “game changing horse” in the Airlie story. Purchased in 1969 the top class miler was purchased for £400,000. “The share was £10,000 and we started standing him at £4,000 or thereabouts and he went up to £85,000. Things were very different in those days; most deals were worked out on the back of a fag packet. Habitat was syndicated pretty well overnight and I remember Tim selling two shares to William Hill on the aeroplane going to Paris for £10,000 each.” Rogers continued to invest in stud farms, broodmares and more stallions. In 1978, just as the bloodstock industry was going through its own industrial revolution, Tim Rogers was diagnosed with leukaemia. He survived for six years but died in January 1984 leaving Sonia with two sons John and Anthony, aged just 14 and 12. It is hard to believe it now but Sonia’s involvement in the business had, until then, been very much at a distance. “I wasn’t ever very welcome in the office,” she recalls. “I looked after all the students, I fed people, I fed all the office staff and entertained clients. When Tim died, there were 14 stallions, seven studs (five in Ireland, one in New Zealand and one in America) and over 100 broodmares. We had the most stallions in Europe at that time and masses of partnerships. Our main

partners were Roland De Chambure and Alec Head in France. Tim’s brother Mickey was a tremendous help, he sorted the yearlings out. I managed to sell plenty of nominations; it all worked rather well, and went fine until the next year when Mickey died. He had a heart attack just 18 months after Tim died and that was ghastly.” As she faced alone into the challenge ahead, plenty of highly placed individuals voiced reservations to Sonia about the wisdom of her trying to keep things going. They clearly did not know her as well as they thought. “There was very good office staff, and Julian Lloyd came in to assist with the management very quickly. David Sullivan was the first person I employed after Tim died and he became manager when Julian left. After Tim died I had lined the boys up and said, ‘I’ll do this for 20 years and if either of you are interested then we’ll go on’. John was never interested but Anthony wanted to get involved so he went off to Australia and America before coming home to work with me. We exited the New Zealand market because it was simply too far away to manage properly. Operations in America were so much easier because we were always in partnership with Robert Clay at Three Chimneys.” There are no stallions now at Airlie but
an enviable broodmare band and plenty more success. Six individual Group 1 winners since 2000 have been sold through Goffs, three of which cost €40,000 or less. Irish 2000 Guineas winner Bachelor Duke cost just €125,000 while the Champion filly Petrushka was bought by John Warren for €110,000. With results like that buyers at every level should look carefully through the Airlie draft in 2016, among whose highlights Sonia picks a colt by Oasis Dream and a filly by Dark Angel. In addition to Airlie Stud, Sonia was the first female member of the Turf Club, and has sat on the Racing Board and the Curragh Committee. Her love of art and antiques still burns brightly, she is an avid gardener and a dedicated grandmother. We had lunch together a few days after the BREXIT vote, on which her comments were brief. “I’ve no idea about BREXIT except that it will add more complications to everybody’s lives and, in my experience, complications generally cost money.” I wonder if such pragmatism might have made her suitable for public office but am reminded of the saying that, in politics, you are well advised to sit on the fence while keeping both ears to the ground. Mrs Rogers has many talents but she would be the first to agree that fence-sitting is not one of them.

Nestled in a coastal bay in the Cape Bénat, a stone’s throw from St Tropez, lies the Léoube estate, one of the most beautiful protected sites in Europe and home to Château Léoube. Spread across four kilometers of coastline, the estate includes 65 hectares of vineyards and 20 hectares of olive groves, all devoted to growing the grapes and olives that make Léoube’s award winning wines and olive oils. Provence is home to some of the oldest vineyards in France, and their soil dates back over 800 millions years. To maintain the heritage of the land, Leoube believe in time-honoured, artisan farming, following biodynamic principles. They are certified organic. The grapes are all harvested and sorted by hand, in tune with the seasonal and lunar cycles. These clusters are then transported to their own cellars where the traditional wine making process begins.
• The classic, house rosé is the award winning Rosé de Léoube. Pale silky salmon in colour, this is very much a rosé of elegance rather than power, a wine that grows in confidence as each mouthful is savoured. Blended from a mix of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvedre, the delicate aromas reveal scents of honey and soft red fruits. There is also an unmistakable scent of mint evoking the herbs that grow wild around the vineyards. • Distinctly pale and with the most delicate of pear aromas, Le Secret de Léoube Rosé is assured and effortless. Made from lower yields, it is delicately scented, cool and yet underlaid with slightly more exotic aromas that betray its Provençal origins - herbs, fennel, a touch of aniseed. It is finely textured (thanks to the Cabernet Sauvignon), persistent and warming, without being overtly alcoholic. • And finally, there is LaLonde - the most recent addition to Leoube’s cellar and a wine that we are very proud of. This is a fascinating wine, clearly rosé in colour and style, and yet with a richer texture and mouthfeel, reminiscent of a white Burgundy. Whilst dry and crisp, there is fa ine intensity of strawberry and white peach fruit and LaLonde could well turn out to be a rosé that improves and gains complexity with age.

im Bolger: where do you start? Start with New Approach if you like, his National Stakes winner of 2007, his Dewhurst Stakes winner, his Derby winner, who went on to land the Irish Champion Stakes and the Champion Stakes. Or you could go back a year and start with Teofilo, Bolger’s first Dewhurst Stakes winner, his champion two-year-old colt, five for five as a juvenile and warm favourite for the Guineas before injury ruled him out of the race and ultimately ended his time on the racecourse. Or you could start with the fillies, Give Thanks or Flame Of Tara or Condessa or Jet Ski Lady. Or with St Jovite, champion juvenile in Ireland in 1991, second in the Epsom Derby the following year, recordbreaking winner of the Irish Derby, King George winner. Or you could go back even further. Go back to Clonsilla in Dublin in the late 1970s, when Jim Bolger started to
train racehorses in the Phoenix Park. He had studied accountancy, but he didn’t sit the exams, he got bored with an office job and the lure of horses just proved to be too great. He started out with showjumpers, but determined that he wasn’t good enough to succeed at the very top level, at the level at which he wanted to compete. He didn’t know for sure that he could compete at the top level of racing either, but he believed that he could. The Pope’s visit to Ireland in 1979, and to the Phoenix Park in particular, brought an end to the training of racehorses in Dublin’s park. So the trainers who were training on the Phoenix Park at the time – Noel Chance and Christy Grassick among them as well as Jim Bolger – had to find alternative accommodation. Bolger found a new home in Coolcullen, just on the Kilkenny side of the Carlow/ Kilkenny border. The irony was not lost on the man, a Wexford man, a hurling man, setting himself up within the confines of Kilkenny, arch-rivals to Wexford on

It’s probably down to your relationship with risk. I have a positive attitude towards risk. I suppose, looking back now, I was long oddsagainst to succeed, but I didn’t look at it like that at the time.

the field of play. But as a training centre, it was exactly what Bolger was seeking. The natural environment was perfect for racehorses, and it was so fantastically remote that Jim and his wife Jackie got lost on their way home shortly after they had moved there. Very quickly, Bolger’s belief in himself manifested itself on the racecourse. Bigrace success followed quickly after his move to Coolcullen. He plied his trade with fillies mainly in the early days simply because, he tells you, he couldn’t afford the colts. Condessa won the Yorkshire Oaks in 1981, Flame Of Tara won the Coronation Stakes and the Pretty Polly Stakes in 1983, the year that Give Thanks won the Irish Oaks. Park Appeal won the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes in 1984, Park Express won the Nassau Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes in 1986. Park Express is the dam of Bolger’s Derby winner New Approach. Breeding and racing collide, that’s the way things have evolved. Jim Bolger the fulcrum. Bolger did not breed New Approach, but when Lodge Park Stud’s yearling moved easily around the ring at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2006, Bolger bid €430,000 and took the Galileo colt home with him. Bolger’s faith in Galileo was unshakeable from the start. Indeed, while Bolger’s faith
may not have been the sole reason for the Coolmore stallion’s unprecedented success, while Galileo probably would have reached the dizzy heights that he has reached as a sire anyway, it is not stretching things to say that Bolger’s faith was at least the catalyst. It was the cornerstone of the colossus that Galileo has become. “I had to compete against Galileo on the racecourse,” recalls the trainer. “And that wasn’t easy. But I always thought that he had the attributes that you look for in a potential top class stallion. I thought that he was great value when he first stood as a stallion, and when his fee was reduced to €37,500, sure it was a no-brainer.” In 2002, Bolger sent his mare Affianced to Galileo, and he bred Heliostatic. Heliostatic won his maiden on his second of two runs as a juvenile, and he won a Listed race and the Group 3 Meld Stakes as a three-year-old Listed, but he didn’t win again. He had the talent, Bolger tells you, but he didn’t have the temperament. Even so, it did nothing to shake his firm belief that Galileo could be the sire that he became. In 2003, Bolger sent Affianced back to Galilieo, and he bred Soldier Of Fortune. He also sent Speirbhean to him that year, and he bred Teofilo. The latter, trained by Bolger, went five for five through his juvenile year, landing the Group 1 National Stakes and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes

along the way, while the former was bought by Coolmore and was trained by Aidan O’Brien to win the Irish Derby in 2007 and the Group 1 Coronation Cup in 2008. In 2006, Bolger went to Goffs and bought a Galileo filly out of the Anabaa mare Dance For Fun for €80,000. He called her Lush Lashes, and she went on to win three Group 1 races as a three-year-old, the Coronation Stakes, the Yorkshire Oaks and the Matron Stakes. “If I wanted to buy Lush Lashes now,” he says, “with Galileo the sire that he is now, I wouldn’t get her for 10 times what I paid for her.” That is the premise on which Jim Bolger’s operation has evolved. He was training these horses, winning big prizes with them. Then, when he went back to the sales to try to buy their siblings, he couldn’t afford them, and he couldn’t afford them simply because of what he had achieved with their siblings on the racetrack. “If I had the mare,” he says thoughtfully, “at least I had options then. I could sell the brothers or sisters, or I could race them, or I could sell the mare if I needed to.” And so evolved a breeding side that would match the quality of Bolger’s training side, both operating at the very top end of thoroughbred racing. Nowhere in that world is there an operation like this,
I had to compete against Galileo on the racecourse. I always thought he had the attributes of a potential top class stallion. an individual who breeds at the top level, who trains at the top level, who succeeds at the top level. “It’s probably down to your relationship with risk,” says Jim. “I have a positive attitude towards risk. I suppose, looking back now, I was long odds-against to succeed, but I didn’t look at it like that at the time. It was probably foolish to take on the risk that we took on, with a young family, but Jackie backed me all the way, all the time, and that made it easier. She said in an interview recently, Jim can be very persuasive.” It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t sell, mind you. He sells when he needs to. His operation is expensive to run. A training
yard that employs 100 people – “I have no staff, I have 100 bosses and they have one staff ” – a 350-acre stud farm in Wexford, the 280-acre former dairy farm, Beechy Park farm, outside Rathvilly, some 80 mares. He sells when he needs the money, when he needs the cash flow to keep the wheels greased. In 2011 he sold his Ribblesdale Stakes and Royal Whip Stakes winner Banimpire at Goffs’ breeding stock sale for €2.3 million. He also sold two Sea The Stars foals at the foal sale that year for €1.65 million. He didn’t want to sell them, he was sorry to see them go, but sometimes you have to sell the good ones, and they served their purpose. You can grease a lot of wheels with €4 million. Four months after Banimpire was sold, Dawn Approach made his debut in a maiden at The Curragh on the first day of the 2012 flat season. Dawn Approach was all Jim Bolger. He bred him, by his Derby winner New Approach, out of his Phone Trick mare Hymn Of The Dawn. He also trained him, and his wife Jackie owned him. And so the wheels turned again. Dawn Approach won that maiden. He also won the other five races that he contested as a juvenile, including the Coventry Stakes and the National Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes.

“Dawn Approach never disappointed in his early work,” says the trainer, “and he was ready to go in March. So, even though we felt that he was something special, we said that we’d let him off anyway. He was a little bit cheeky, so we thought that the run would settle him down, and that was what happened. He matured into a very professional racehorse.” Champion juvenile in 2012, Dawn Approach went on to win the 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes the following year as a three-year-old. Pleascach is another good example of the depth of the operation. Pleascach is by Teofilo, out of a Thunder Gulch mare named Toirneach. Bolger obviously trained Teofilo, champion two-year-old of 2006, but he also bred Teofilo, out of the Danehill mare Speirbhean, whom he also
bred and trained, out of a mare, Saviour, whom he also trained. Not only that, but Bolger trained Pleascach’s dam Toirneach. She was the filly who raced in the pink colours in order to promote awareness of breast cancer. So Pleascach, winner of the Blue Wind Stakes and the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Yorkshire Oaks, represented generations of Jim Bolger breeding and training. “I was lucky too that my brother Paddy grew to be very good on the breeding side,” he says. “He learned as he went, he looked after the mares, as his son Ken does now,
back in Wexford. That left me free to get on with the training. I arrange the matings, and I speak to Ken every morning, but he just gets on with it, and he’s very good at it.” Jim Bolger is essentially a racehorse trainer, a top class racehorse trainer, but he is a top class racehorse trainer who has developed a top class breeding operation behind him. The breeding supports the training. That’s fundamental. Not the other way around. That’s where you start with Jim Bolger. There is just no knowing where to end. Goffs Magazine

laying percentages is the solid approach to business, and one that has served bloodstock and racing industry members well. Breed the best to the best, they say. Send the progeny to the champion trainer, employ the leading jockey and book your place at racing’s biggest meetings. It is so easy that many have tried it and discovered it has absolutely no guarantees. Rulers and kings will confirm there is no sure way to find or produce the next Classic winner. It remains a game of chance that often rewards flair and lateral thinking. Through racing’s maze of imponderables and lucky turns grew a story that reached a

peak in June at Goffs London Sale. If you did not know the name Jet Setting in January – and few did – you probably do now. She is the filly who was bought for less than an average family car (12000gns or about
€16,000) as a two-year-old in October. After four failed attempts to win a race for leading British trainer Richard Hannon, she blossomed into a Classic winner, landing the Irish 1,000 Guineas ahead of subsequent Epsom Oaks winner Minding. Not bad for a horse from inauspicious beginnings – her young sire, Fast Company, had not yet had a runner when breeder Peter Collins sent him the mare Mean Lae, whose one win in 15 starts came in a lowly affair on Dundalk’s all-weather track. The resulting filly was sold at Goffs November Foal Sale to racehorse owner Julie Wood for €7,000. She is proof that great things can come out of the unexpected – not unlike Goffs London Sale.

Anyone who has negotiated the streets of Britain’s capital city will know you don’t hold bloodstock auctions inside the M25, let alone within the congestion zone, but Goffs does, having held the inaugural event in 2014. Aligning itself with luxury brands, and finding an ambitious title partner in QIPCO, the Qatar-based business interest of Sheikh Hamad Al Thani and his brothers, the sale confounded the scoffing cynics who said the event was in the wrong place – and during Royal Ascot week! Preposterous! A glance around the audience who attended this year’s sale would leave no doubts that its timing, on the eve of racing’s most-celebrated festival, is one of its strengths. It is becoming the perfect entrée to five days of outstanding action on the track. A genteel way for racehorse owners, trainers, bloodstock agents and racing managers to meet up in the green and pleasant surroundings of Kensington Palace Orangery, yet with the age-old business of buying and selling bloodstock at its core. Hard-bitten consignors may keep straight faces as their breeze-up horse comes under the hammer, and trainers look edgy when their Royal Ascot hopeful teeters on a bid, yet there is a garden party atmosphere that makes Goffs London Sale like no other. It is one occasion where you can mix business and pleasure – ask the group of Chinese visitors, calling themselves Hurun UK Racing, who burst into applause and hugged each other when the hammer’s fall meant they had just bought Royal Ascot entry Dainty Dandy for £200,000, a meaningful sum to enter European racing. Yet it was Jet Setting – a most apt name for the occasion – who fulfilled expectations as the odds-on favourite to top the sale, achieving a price of £1.3million. As Michael Wallace of China Horse Club delivered the winning nod, heading underbidder Mark Player and his Australian interests, the man who masterminded her place in bloodstock’s millionaires’ club smiled and shook hands with his partners. John Kilbride had no right to plunder such riches, for he was not born to the task, but he did have flair and lateral thinking. Raised in the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster – the location for Goffs UK’s sales – Kilbride gained an interest through watching racing on television while he studied quantity surveying at university. Later, as an odds compiler for bookmaking giant Betfred, he gained a foothold within

the sport which had absorbed him as a boy, and from there developed an insight into the bloodstock side of the industry. Five years ago, knowing this was an area in which he wanted to delve, but with little to go on, he made a move, saying: “I approached it with my hands in the air, admitting I knew nothing and wanted to learn. A couple of people took me under their wing, the first being Brian O’Rourke at the National Stud in Newmarket, who gave me a chance and ten years of experience in a five-months course. “From observing the European bloodstock scene I had become aware of the key players, and it all seemed impenetrable. I realised that if I went to Australia I wouldn’t know anyone, and wouldn’t be afraid to put myself about.” Curiously, his abilities as a talented cricketer meant he journeyed down under with the England cricket team as a member of the group who provided the players with net practice. Once the tour was over he was able to concentrate on discovering more about the local racing scene, and was helped by British bloodstock agent Johnny McKeever, who has a full contacts book on the other side of the globe. McKeever
introduced Kilbride to Adrian Keatley, and the two men discovered they were on a similar mission. Keatley had left his native County Wicklow after six years working for Jumps trainer Oliver McKiernan, and, with a view to training Flat horses, was in Australia gaining experience via stints with trainers John O’Shea and Chris Waller. Kilbride says: “Australian trainers don’t like going to sales, and I managed to get started by offering to do lists for them. I bought a Group Two and a Group Three winner in my first season, then worked at Swettenham Stud, and later did a bit with Dermot Farrington before branching out on my own in 2015.” Re-engaging with Keatley, who had moved to stables on the Curragh in 2014, the pair were on the road to buying Jet Setting. Of his decision to purchase a filly whose profile was pretty moderate, he says: “I thought she gave us a good chance of a return, and while it is very hard to get improvement from a horse trained by someone as good as Richard Hannon, yards of that size have a filtering process and have to move horses on. “We felt that if she was ridden a little handier she might put her head in front,
and we also found a few little physical issues, and that swimming suited her. We knew of a Listed race in France, called the Prix Herod and held a month after the sale, and thought that if placed there she could be sold for a profit. “She was squeezed up by the winner, La Cressonniere [now a double Classic winner in France], and would have got the race, but Jet Setting crossed the line in third, so they couldn’t promote her ahead of the runner-up – had they done so she would have been sold straight away. “Other moments like that followed – we could so easily have sold her after she won at Cork and Leopardstown in the spring, but then I recruited a couple of other lads into the syndicate with the intention of enabling us to pay the supplementary fee [£30,000] for the [QIPCO] 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. It turned out the ground was too quick for her, and she was intimidated by other horses running downhill into The Bushes, but I knew on speed figures she was a Group One filly, and so we stumped up the supplementary again [€30,000] to run at the Curragh.” Kilbride says of the decision to sell Jet Setting: “We thought long and hard about it, but I said to Adrian, ‘we want to be doing this regularly for another 50 years, and we can really leverage off this situation – if you lose the horse it’s not the end of the world’. It’s turned out fantastically, because she sold well and China Horse Club returned her to Adrian to continue racing.” “After she won the Irish 1,000 Guineas we had offers from other sales companies, but Sean Flannery of Goffs has become a good friend, and he suggested the London Sale. We didn’t have a price in mind, because she has so much upside to her for breeding, being a wonderful outcross for Dubawi, Galileo, Frankel and other top sires. How could we value her with that in

mind? It made sense to put her through the ring and let the market decide.” Did he consider selling Jet Setting at one of the end-of-year breeding stock sales? “Yes, but by selling at the London Sale the buyer would get a breeding prospect that still had the rest of the summer for racing, and we saw that as a positive.” So Keatley keeps the filly, and Kilbride has a useful treasure chest with which to source the next Jet Setting. He says of his relationship with the trainer: “We share the same beliefs, and keep things simple. Massive credit must go to Adrian, who is at the coal face every day, while I’m just a passenger. “I know there are more horses out there waiting to be discovered, and that’s a good thing, because it opens up the market to people who haven’t got limitless budgets. We’ve set the bar high, but the Jet Setting story is one for the battlers, the people who are prepared to work hard for a result.” Goffs Magazine

T
o borrow a few words from The Racing Post’s Royal Ascot Winner’s column, the Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale endured a “bumpy ride” in April and what was required was “a reminder of the good horses available to lift it out of the doldrums.” The sale has been the source of some wonderful horses in the last few years, we all know who they are, but undoubtedly new stars were needed. Royal Ascot provided the stage for the sale to make a statement and it did so in emphatic
fashion, celebrating four Stakes winners – two of those at Group 1 level with Quiet Reflection and My Dream Boat. Many buyers were questioning the success of Breeze-Up horses on the track over the last 12 months, so much so that a Breeze-Up marketing campaign was launched to highlight graduate success in Europe. The results, not only from this sale, seem to have largely disproved the belief that Breeze-Up horses are not going on to perform on the track. So, all is right again? Perhaps, but that’s not the whole story. Of the six
main Breeze-Up Sales in England, France and Ireland, only one recorded a 2016 Royal Ascot winner – and it claimed four significant races. Some might say, so what, but given that Royal Ascot is arguably the measure of European racing, and taking into account the huge cost of horses now being purchased at these 2 year old sales, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect to see these horses feature in the results. However, for whatever reason, the only Breeze Up Sale that seemed to have been somewhat ‘forgotten’ this year was the Doncaster Sale – yet it was the one that Goffs Magazine

FOCUS CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Tim Kent drops the gavel on joint top lot Ardad; Joint top lot Prince of Lir sells for £170,000; Peter Swann and Stroud Coleman Bloodstock sign the docket for Prince of Lir, subsequent winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot; Richard Brown signs for Ardad, winner of the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at the Royal meeting.
Prince of Lir and Ardad, the latter of whom won the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes, the former of whom won the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, both sold at April’s sale for a joint top price of £170,000. These wins are every bit as important as Quiet Reflection and My Dream Boat’s Group Ones, as they proved that the sale can still produce Royal Ascot two-year-olds. Many argue that this ability is one of the sale’s greatest draws. How vital it was then to see them win so well, particularly Ardad who won the Windsor Castle in a time faster than the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes. And for the Ontoawinner team, a syndication that has enjoyed much success since it was founded in 2011, to see them join trainer Karl Burke in cheering

produced the results on the track. A conundrum indeed. All that aside though, having attended most of the Royal Meeting, I can attest to the joy of many of those who have bought from it. The likes of Peter Swann, a huge supporter of this sale, who cheered home his first Royal winner in Prince of Lir who won the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, bought this horse just seven weeks earlier at the at the Doncaster BU Sale.
home their first Royal Ascot winner in Quiet Reflection who won the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup, crowned a wonderful few days. In conjunction with My Dream Boat’s win in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’ Stakes, these two horses have reminded everyone that this sale has, and continues to, produce world class Group 1 winning racehorses. Perhaps some forgot that in April this year. Sadly, it happens. I do wonder though whether they can afford to once again in 2017. Time will tell …

The Wildenstein Stables Ltd
DISPERSAL
A RARE CHANCE TO INVEST IN SOME OF EUROPE’S FINEST BLOODLINES AT GOFFS... NANCY SEXTON PREVIEWS THE WILDENSTEIN STABLES LTD DISPERSAL
68
Goffs
A
rare opportunity to tap into the bloodlines belonging to one of Europe’s most successful breeders will arise at Goffs later this year with The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal. A total of 109 horses are set to pass under the hammer through The Castlebridge Consignment, among them Classic winner Beauty Parlour and her Dubawi yearling colt, with the yearlings scheduled to sell at the Goffs Orby Sale and the foals and breeding stock slated for November. Daniel Wildenstein, a world renowned gallery owner and art authority, inherited his love of the sport from his father Georges, who established the stable in 1923 and ran it with great success until his death in 1963. Daniel Wildenstein went on to be France’s leading owner on nine occasions, starting from 1969 and once posthumously in 2001. Since then Ecurie Wildenstein has rarely finished out of the top ten. “Goffs exists to sell the very best bloodstock so to land exclusive rights to conduct a dispersal of this magnitude and quality is very exciting and a massive vindication of our approach,” says Goffs CEO Henry Beeby. “The Goffs team are a passionate, enthusiastic and hardworking bunch so it is a real feather in the Goffs cap and we are very proud to have been chosen by David Wildenstein.
“In my 34 years in the business there are a handful of names that you associate with the very best – Robert Sangster, The Aga Khan, Khalid Abdullah, the Maktoums, Coolmore, the Niarchos family for example - and the Wildenstein name is certainly amongst their number. “Being appointed to conduct The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal is an honour in which we take great pride. We have always said that we can sell the best, we keep proving it and hope to do the horses justice so repaying the enormous trust that David Wildenstein has placed in us.” Modern racing history is awash with memorable Wildenstein horses. There were the four Arc winners, among them the wonderful filly Allez France, who had the measure of Dahlia every time they met, and Peintre Celebre, whose sweeping run remains one of the iconic moments in Arc history. The annus mirabilis of 1976, in which Flying Water, Pawneese and Crow raided England to take the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks, King George and St Leger, was followed by a decade in the 1980’s highlighted by All Along, Sagace and Steinlen. Peintre Celebre, Bigstone, Arcangues, Aquarelliste, Vallee Enchantee and Westerner followed over the next 20 years and more recently, the Wildenstein name has been upheld by Beauty Parlour and Planteur. This is an operation that has consistently
operated at the highest level and one that has never been afraid to shirk a challenge or think outside the box. Who else would have pitched Arcangues in against America’s best on an alien surface at the 1993 Breeders’ Cup? Sent off at 133/1, he went on to pull off the biggest shock in Breeders’ Cup history. More recently, they were one of the first European operations to use Deep Impact and were rewarded as the breeder of his first European Group 1 winner Beauty Parlour. As such, the dispersal represents an incredible opportunity for breeders, both domestic and international. “With over 100 horses ranging from foals to mares with horses in training and yearlings in between The Wildenstein Stables Ltd Dispersal offers buyers the chance to invest in some of the best bloodlines in the stud book,” says Beeby. “It is not often that so much quality is offered so this is a quite unique opportunity.” A stellar group of horses - comprising 27 mares, 19 yearlings, 20 foals and 44 horses in training - is led by Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Beauty Parlour. Also successful in the Prix de la Grotte, she is one of only a handful of Europeanbased daughters of Deep Impact and out of a Listed-winning half-sister to Melbourne Cup hero Might And Power. Beauty Parlour is in foal to Kingman. Also catalogued is her Dubawi yearling colt and Dansili filly foal. Her dam Bastet is

represented by her own Dansili yearling filly and winning Invincible Spirit daughter Blue Kimono, who is in foal to Australia. Among the horses in training, buyers have the option of a stakes-winning filly with a world class pedigree in Lady Of Kyushu, the winner of last year’s Derby du Languedoc who has also been Group 2-placed. By Smart Strike, she is out of a Group 3-placed granddaughter of champion Durtal. Also catalogued is the Prix du Conseil du Paris winner Ming Dynasty. The Wildenstein family have long been respected for their management of established families, many of which are detailed below. But they have also regularly injected new blood into their broodmare band, and again those mares in question will be on offer at Goffs. Visalia is a Dansili daughter of 1,000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters in foal to Lope De Vega. She also has several young progeny on offer including a colt foal by Shamardal. Galateia, meanwhile, is a Listed-placed daughter of Pour Moi’s Group 3-winning half-sister Gagnoa. Also by Dansili, she has a yearling filly by Smart Strike and a filly foal by Mizzen Mast. There is one daughter of champion Rolly Polly catalogued in the Listedplaced Rosa Bonheur, a Mr Greeley mare in foal to Siyouni. The dispersal also includes her yearling colt by Dark Angel and filly foal by Pivotal. The famed Albertine, Plencia and Virunga families, from which much of Wildenstein success stems, are also well represented, as detailed below: PLENCIA Listed winner Plencia, a 1968 foaled homebred daughter of Le Haar, foaled the brilliant filly Pawneese, who pulled off the Epsom Oaks and Prix de Diane double in June 1973 before following up in the King George. However, her other gift to Wildenstein was the 1981 Blue Sea Stakes heroine Petroleuse, later granddam of champion Peintre Celebre. One of the most coveted offerings is likely to be Peinture Rare, a Sadler’s Wells half-sister to Peintre Celebre who won the 2010 Prix de Pomone. In foal to Dansili, she is offered alongside her placed Smart Strike three-year-old daughter Painter’s Muse, two-year-old Dubawi filly Pavini, yearling Oasis Dream colt and filly foal
alongside her colt foal by Le Havre. Her three-year-old Dalakhani filly, Asterina, recently ran fourth in the Prix Vanteux. Aquarelliste’s Listed-placed daughter Amerique, by Galileo, is in foal to Pivotal and will be offered alongside her Siyouni filly foal and Lonhro two-year-old filly, Almada. Meanwhile, Aquarelliste’s threeparts sister, the Danehill Dancer mare Abyssinie, is in foal to Le Havre.
Daniel Wildenstein was France’s leading owner on nine occasions.
by Invincible Spirit. As for Pawneese, the opportunity to purchase one of her descendants arises through her granddaughters Pleasant Valley, a highlyrated winning mare by Shamardal in foal to Makfi, and Parade Militaire, who has a colt foal by Lope De Vega. ALBERTINE Wildenstein families are easily recognisable worldwide but none are arguably more powerful than those belonging to Albertine and Virunga. Albertine was Group 2-placed for Wildenstein before foaling ten winners led by Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Arcangues. The homebred Irish River mare also bred the Classic-placed Agathe, later dam of champion Aquarelliste, as well as the dam of Classic winner Cape Verdi. The Peintre Celebre mare Andromeda Galaxy, a Listedwinning granddaughter of Albertine, would fit nicely in any broodmare band, as would her Listed-placed sister Altamira, whose daughter Akatea ran second in last year’s Prix du Moulin. Andromeda Galaxy is in foal to Charm Spirit and will be dispersed alongside her fillies by Elusive Quality (two-year-old), Giant’s Causeway (yearling) and Holy Roman Emperor (foal). Altamira has also been well covered in recent seasons and heads to the sale in foal to Lope De Vega
VIRUNGA One of the oldest Wildenstein families and one for which success has spanned the decades, comprising the likes of 1976 Champion Stakes winner Vitiges, Group 1-winning half-siblings Vallee Enchantee and Volga and this year’s Prix de Diane third Volta over a 40 year period. Among those catalogued is Venetian Beauty, a Lear Fan mare out Virunga’s high-flying daughter Venise, in foal to Mastercraftsman. Vieux Maisons, a Danehill Dancer half-sister to Vallee Enchantee and Volga, is also slated to sell alongside her filly foal by Kendargent. Meanwhile, her own dam, Group 2 winner Verveine, a tremendous mare who has bred seven stakes horses in all, is also represented by Vila Nova, a two-year-old filly by Silver Frost.

ALL ALONG Many brilliant fillies carried Wildenstein’s colours but few were quite as tough as All Along, whose golden autumn of 1983 took in victories in the Arc, Rothmans International, Turf Classic and Washington D.C. International. She bred 11 foals, including the Group 1-placed Along All, and is represented in the dispersal by her Listed-winning granddaughter Adventure Seeker. The Bering mare is in foal to Siyouni and dam of a colt foal by Pivotal among others. LUPE Wildenstein’s decision to purchase the 1970 Oaks heroine Lupe from Gladys Joel reaped major rewards when the daughter of Primera foaled five Pattern winners including Louveterie, dam of Wildenstein’s champions Loup Sauvage and Loup Solitaire. Today, the line remains in rude health for the Wildenstein stable through the Classicplaced Louveterie, who is represented in the dispersal by her Giant’s Causeway daughter Louve Imperiale, in foal to Goffs Magazine

FEATURE Australia. Four of her progeny will also pass under the hammer, including her yearling filly by Teofilo and filly foal by Mastercraftsman. BRIGHT MOON Nine years after carrying Wildenstein’s colours to victory in the 1993 Prix de Pomone, it was the turn of her daughter, Bright Sky, to take centre stage as the winner of the Prix de Diane and Prix de l’Opera. Bright Sky is represented in the dispersal by Bengala, a two-year-old filly by Pivotal, while Bright Moon is also dam of the dual winner Beata and two-year-old Barrancas, both of whom are by Silver Frost. Also slated to sell is another winning half-sister, the Anabaa mare Bonanza Creek, alongside her first foal, a filly by Siyouni. Allez France and Yves Saint-Martin, winners of the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe in 1974 - the first of four Wildenstein victories in the race.

A full catalogue of the The Wildenstein Stables Limited Dispersal will be released by Goffs closer to the time.
PAIX BLANCE Prix Minerve winner Prairie Runner and her Group 2-winning daughter Pacific Rim are the highlights of the group descending from Listed winner Paix Blance. Prairie Runner, by Arazi, is in foal to Camelot while Pacific Rim, by Singspiel, has a colt foal by Dansili and yearling colt by Mastercraftsman to sell. She is in foal to Zoffany.
Five of the greatest Wildenstein horses ALL ALONG A legendary globetrotter who was champion in both Europe and the US, All Along was Wildenstein’s second Arc winner in 1983. At that time of year, most campaigns are coming to an end. However, All Along’s golden run was just beginning. Shipped to America by trainer Patrick Biancone, she proceeded to win the Rothmans International, Turf Classic and Washington D.C. International. An outstanding filly, she also ran second in the 1984 Breeders’ Cup Turf, 1982 Japan Cup and 1984 Arc before a productive career at stud.

Goffs_2016_Mystery Dispersal.indd 72
ALLEZ FRANCE Wildenstein’s first Arc winner and Horse of the Year of 1974 in France, Allez France is regarded as one of the greatest fillies to grace French turf. The daughter of Sea Bird won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, Prix de Diane and Prix Vermeille as a three-year-old in 1973, the Prix Ganay, Prix d’Ispahan and Arc in 1974 and a second renewal of the Prix Ganay in 1975. She met another great filly of that era, Dahlia, on six occasions and defeated her every time.
ARCANGUES A son of Wildenstein’s Arc winner Sagace trained by Andre Fabre, Arcangues is best remembered for one shock performance in 1993, when the first European-trained winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at 133/1. He had beaten Misil in that year’s Prix d’Ispahan but meeting America’s best horses on dirt at Santa Anita represented a very different test. Jockey Jerry Bailey famously remarked that he walked into the paddock unable to pronounce the horse’s name. By the end of the race, however, everyone knew it - always travelling well amid the kickback, Arcangues put in a sustained run to weave through horses before sweeping past multiple Grade 1 winner Bertrando.
BUCKSKIN Buckskin was a brilliant stayer but also a brave one whose career was hindered by a host of training problems. Inititally trained by Angel Penna, he landed the 1977 Prix Jean Prat (now Prix Vicomtesse Vigier) and Prix du Cadran, in both instances defeating Sagaro. Later switched to Peter Walwyn and then Sir Henry Cecil, he went on to take a second renewal of the Prix du Cadran as well as the Jockey Club Cup and Doncaster Cup before running a brave second to Le Moss in the 1979 Ascot Gold Cup. He enjoyed some success as a jumps stallion, notably as the sire of Grand National hero Amberleigh House.
PEINTRE CELEBRE Gifted with a devastating turn of foot, Peintre Celebre lit up 1997 as the dominant winner of the Prix du Jockey Club, Grand Prix de Paris and Arc for Andre Fabre. It was that final performance of 1997, in which he swooped from an unpromising position to win by five lengths in a course record time, for which he is best remembered, and one that ensured he ended the season at Cartier’s Horse of the Year. He later stood at Coolmore, where he sired Group 1 winners such as Byword, Dai Jin and Pride.

REACH
GOFFS HAS STRENGTHENED ITS RESOURCES ENSURING THAT ITS SALES IN IRELAND AND THE UK ARE TO THE FOREFRONT OF BUYERS’ MINDS GLOBALLY, WRITES LISSA OLIVER.
G
offs international presence was boosted this year as Doncaster Bloodstock Sales was rebranded to Goffs UK, coming nine years after the merger of Goffs and DBS in 2007. It was seen as a natural progression as Henry Beeby Group Chief Executive explains: “The merger has been an enormous success from day one and the renaming of DBS was our next step in developing the Goffs brand and our global presence. Goffs in Ireland enjoys a superb international reputation which can only strengthen what
we offer at our sales in Doncaster”. Beeby adds, “The Goffs ethos of industry, integrity and innovation is core to our business regardless of sale location, and buyers and vendors can expect the same high standard of service at every Goffs sale in Ireland and the UK”. The Goffs marketing teams on both sides of the Irish sea, headed by Joey Cullen in Ireland and Tim Kent in the UK, work side by side on behalf of vendors to coordinate the international marketing approach for the entire group and maximise the value of the network of agents. The global reach of the thoroughbred industry means that a
helping hand on the ground is invaluable. “If we go somewhere unfamiliar we feel reassured if there is a familiar face to help us, particularly culturally,” says Henry Beeby. “From our own point of view, to have someone there with local knowledge is key and critical to our operation.” “International buyers are an increasingly important part of our business and an area that we are always looking to grow,” points out Tim Kent of Goffs UK. “Our team of overseas agents is a hugely valuable asset providing introductions to new clients in emerging markets whilst maintaining strong links with existing international Goffs Magazine

buyers to ensure that they have everything they need to visit Goffs in Doncaster or Kildare.” The ‘home’ team is much travelled, too, and Joey Cullen reminds us that the worldwide agents are doing much of the groundwork throughout the year, thereby maximising the time he and his team spend away from the office and ensuring they are in the right place, with the right people. Cullen’s day-to-day job revolves around coordinating the global network of agents, so that he can make the most of their time, usually just two or three days in any country. Working alongside ITM, “very much as a team” as he says, maximises their impact. “A lot of the trips we do are together and we work very well in that capacity.” For 20 years, he confesses, he has been hearing the question, what are the emerging markets? “China has grown more in the past two years and Mark Player, our Australasian agent, has been invaluable there, having worked in the past with the Hong Kong Jockey Club. We also have a big involvement on the continent. France can be difficult, with the breeders’ premiums encouraging its home buyers, but in truth people look to buy the best horse they can and increasingly that horse is available at Goffs.” “A good horse can come from anywhere,” agent Gatewood Bell adds. “If you’re playing the game on a global level, you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t go to Goffs. For overseas clients it’s important for them to be able to put a face to a name and I and all the other agents are there to make their trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible.” The overseas-based agents are not only a friendly face and point of contact for their compatriots, but are also hugely popular visitors to our shores come sales time. In recent years the team has expanded to Gatewood Bell in the USA, Takaya Kimura in Japan, Christian von der Recke and Matthias Seeber in Germany, Mark Player in Australia, Gianluca di Castelnuovo and Angelo Robiati in Italy, Stefan Uppstrom and Filip Zwicky in Scandinavia, Gavin Hernon in France and Azamat Kappushev in Russia, clearly illustrating Goffs global reach. All are leading industry professionals and well-respected in their home countries.
Australia MARK PLAYER Since Melbourne-based Mark Player was appointed as Goffs’ Australasian agent in 2013 the firm has seen an increased number of buyers attending its London, Orby and November sales. Working closely with Goffs director, Elaine Lawlor, who lives and works in Australia six months every year it is his “unrivalled contacts together with his knowledge and experience of the international racing and breeding industry”, as Henry Beeby puts it, that has made him an integral part of the firm’s overseas representation. “I assist Australian breeders in sourcing quality broodmares to continually upgrade the Australian herd and to facilitate leading Australian owners to buy and race yearlings in Ireland,” Player says.
Russia AZAMAT KAPPUSHEV Goffs is represented in Russia by Azamat Kappushev. With a strong family background in horse racing, Azamat has previously ridden as a jockey while he and his brother Eugeniy are the leading racing commentators in Russia.

Scandinavia FILIP ZWICKY Filip became an agent for Goffs in 2007, whilst head of communications at Copenhagen Racecourse. He also runs his own company, Scandinavian Raceweb, the publication GalopSport (galopsport.com) and is the co-breeder of Danish Derby heroine Tigress Eleven. “We have Goffs winners every week here in Scandinavia and for me it’s always like having a winner of your own. I take care of the practical things, but I let the client choose his or her horse and bid for it, because that is a huge adrenalin kick and an important part of the experience,” he explains. STEFAN UPPSTROM GOFFS UK SWEDISH AGENT Stefan has been bringing Swedish buyers to Doncaster for 40 years – making him one of the longest serving members of the team. A photographer by trade his job gave him unparalleled access to the country’s racecourses and biggest meetings. One of the best horses Stefan has been involved with during his career was the notoriously badly behaved Ubedizzy who won the William Hill Trophy at York in 1976 before being taken to Sweden where he became the country’s Champion Sprinter.

GAVIN HERNON Gavin Hernon is the most recent addition to the team, joining Goffs as French agent in 2016. Gavin has a wealth of contacts that will assist vendors and purchasers in France where his experience includes roles as pupil assistant to trainers Andre Fabre and Nicolas Clement as well as working with Jean Pierre Deroubaix of the French Bloodstock Agency (FBA). He says: “The quality of French stallions continues to improve and the home market is well supplied, therefore it has never been as attractive to sell premium-eligible yearlings in Ireland at the Orby Sale. The introduction of the Goffs London Sale has also seen fantastic results for French Horses In Training with Pornichet and Smoking Sun going on to Group 1 success”
MATTHIAS SEEBER A successful breeder and vendor with no family background in racing Matthias Seeber joined Goffs three years ago. Hooked on racing from the age of 11 his broodmare successes include Stravina who has bred five winners, including two Listed winners. Her Listed-winning daughter Scoville provides a link between his passion and his profession - he was previously manager of a pharmaceutical company, as she is named after Dr Wilbur Scoville, whose Scoville Scale is the measurement of the heat in chilli peppers. Her Zoffany foal sold at Goffs last year and she has a Casamento foal going to the sale this year.
ANGELO ROBIATI Angelo has represented Goffs for 18 years. His job is to travel to every major sale and push people to sell and buy at Goffs but his client role extends beyond the sales. “In helping people at the sales, whether they are buying or selling, you participate in a very small way. It makes me really happy when you see a horse win and bring success for its owners,” he says. Before joining Goffs he was commercial director of JAL Airlines and split managing and marketing the airline with his breeding operation. He has bred and owned some very good horses in Italy including Group 3-winning juvenile Dessertoflife. Her fullbrother sold at Goffs as a foal.
CHRISTIAN VON DER RECKE GOFFS UK GERMAN AGENT Christian has been an agent with Goffs UK since 2010. He is a top Flat and NH trainer in Germany and has won numerous big races throughout Europe. He made history by becoming the first German trainer to win a NH race in England when Eluna won at Warwick in 2002 and he also produced Fiepes Shuffle to win the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton Park in 2008.
GIANLUCA DI CASTELNUOVO GOFFS UK ITALIAN AGENT As a jockey’s agent Gianluca spent vast amounts of time on racecourses around Italy and built a large network of contacts. He has been an agent for DBS, now Goffs UK, since 2003 and has purchased around 150 horses from Doncaster and Goffs under his company, New Racing Factory, including the Stakes winners Pablosky, and Val Nanda, who won a Listed 2YO race in June this year.
USA GATEWOOD BELL (USA) Gatewood Bell owns Cromwell Bloodstock and his grandparents founded Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, where his father is president of Darley America. “I grew up on the farm and worked with consignors while I was still at school,” he explains. He has also worked for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. By his own admission he’s a racetrack rat. “Some people get so caught up in the sales business they forget what it’s really all about – who can get to the winning post first.” He has already enjoyed big race wins through such notable past purchases as Undrafted, No Nay Never and Hootenanny and is looking forward to his first connections hitting the track this year.

Japan TAKAYA KIMURA Takaya Kimura has been a Goffs agent in Japan since 2014. A long-established owner in Ireland he is well placed to communicate the quality of Irish bloodstock and Irish racing to potential purchasers in Japan. He is also a jockey’s agent to several high profile international riders, when in Japan, including Oliver Peslier, Christophe Soumillon, Douglas Whyte, Craig Williams and William Buick and has been the official interpreter for overseas jockeys for the Japan Race Association for a decade. As President of Dainihon Tsusho Ltd since 1988, an importer of saddlery and equine products, Takaya’s clients include many of Japan’s leading horse breeders, vets and trainers, while he also represents Foran Chemicals Ireland as an agent and distributor to the Japanese market.

uckett’s Grove is an estate situated about half way between Carlow town and Tullow. The main residence, which is now just a romantic ruin has lain empty since the War of Independence. The property was taken over by the Land Commission and subsequently opened to the public as a park with tearooms and studios for craftspeople on site. Tanyia Deane knew the place well before she and her husband Rory Deane ever contemplated living there. As a child, the Bunclody native used to visit to ride horses, as did Rory. As a horse chiropractor Rory developed a business, Aqua Equine Treadmills, around a water-based form of exercise cum physiotherapy to help injured race and sports horses which Tanyia and Rory now run from their property which is situated about a mile beyond the ruin. They also managed to buy 15 acres of prime farmland, on the proviso that they were only going to build a family home on the land. In 2002 they set about
constructing their dream house, inspired by the Italian villas that Tanyia had holidayed in as a child in Sorrento. She also vacationed in Benalmadena where her family had a holiday home, and you can see both the Spanish and Italianate influences in the design of the house; especially in the extensive use of marble, imported directly from Spain for the project. Tanyia hired many local craftsmen to create a singularly unique property. Barry Moorehead designed a bespoke kitchen with granite countertops. Leading off it is a large open plan living cum dining space with a mahogany bar and Italian handcrafted furniture. The brass fender that surrounds the fire was made by hand, an almost extinct art form, by Dublin’s last fender fabricator. There are many bespoke features within the property, which extends to 483sq m / 5,200sq feet. A set of steps lead up to a mezzanine level featuring wrought ironmongery by Martin O’Connell Engineering with doors opening out onto a patio and from where you can look down to the riding arena. The couple invested in 14 foot solid
Birdie’s Eye View NUMBER 8 Churchfields is one of only 21 villas built on the Ryder Cup or North course at the K Club. Overlooking the 14th hole, this four-bedroom dormer-style detached house is set within the 50-acre estate complex and boasts all manner of amenities, including 36 holes of championship golf, fishing on the Liffey and nearby lakes and the hotel’s state-of-the-art gym, swimming pool and spa. The property opens into an expansive hall with a Georgian-style bespoke staircase and galleried landing that draws the eye upstairs. There is a well-proportioned formal sitting room with interconnecting sliding doors opening through to a formal dining room. French doors from each room open out to a patio from where you can track the progress of golfers on the course. The eat-in kitchen has fine in-frame painted units, granite countertops and a large central island and there is a family room that could also double as a study. Upstairs two of the four bedrooms have balconies with glass doors opening out to views across the lawn to the golf course. The property, measures 408sq metres / 4400sq feet and full details are available from Goffs Property. This four-bedroom dormer style detached house on the 14th hole of the Ryder Cup course at the K Club is a golfer’s dream home.

timber doors to draw the eye up to the lofty ceiling heights. In the sunroom they installed a dark marble floor and a trompe d’oeil of cherubs with a gold leaf chandelier to hang overhead. The open plan nature of the three bedroom house means that it works really well for entertaining and the owners have welcomed guests on numerous occasions. “You could have 100 people in this house and it still wouldn’t feel crowded,” says Tanyia. They have worked with some of the country’s top horses; Mount Benbulben; Champagne Fever; Rebel Fitz and eventing star Portersize Just A Jiff. The property includes a stable block with eight loose boxes, a tack room, a water treadmill, a walker and a separate garage. A business opportunity has presented itself in Florida and the Deanes are taking their designs to the Sunshine State. “It’s been a magical house and a fantastic family home”, Tanya says, but they can’t pass up the opportunity to grow the business which they hope their daughter, Taylor, will one day take over. The property is asking €1.5million. goffsproperty.com

he racing set keep it country in a new and cool way. Gone are the walls of hunting prints and fusty kitchens. Horse racing’s fraternity has its own set of likes and dislikes. As country dwellers they eschew the fashion colours of urbanites in favour of a softer take on trends. When you’re surrounded by green fields rather than concrete grey, some popular interiors stories simply don’t work, says Catherine Quirc of Quirc Interiors. “Dark greys for example which look chic in a city home look cold and uninviting when contrasted with the surrounding countryside. Try muted greens and soft takes on blue instead.” There’s a practical side to living in the country too. “Wood burning stoves, for example offer energy efficiency as well as warmth and add to the character of a home complementing already existing period features,” Quirc says. Here’s 10 ideas to try.
ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? The living room of any country house should doff a cap to its surroundings. T
he crossover market is the fastest growing in the world. After saloons, it was the second most launched body shape of last year – and as Jaguar wants to expand its portfolio and has a superb saloon range already – launching a familysized practical sports car makes perfect sense. The strong style and function that led to the F-PACE were first shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in the shapely form of the C-X17 concept car. Clearly a Jaguar from its XF-akin front face and lithe bodywork, it nonetheless had a different purpose and market intent. Best of all, its essence has remained intact in the production F-PACE model which went on sale in May 2016. Bigger than a Porsche Macan but smaller than an Audi Q7, the F-PACE sits in a good place. The benefit of its long rear overhang goes well beyond exterior aesthetics, boosting rear legroom and boot

size. In fact, the F-PACE boasts a rivaltrouncing 650 litres of luggage space and an excellent 1255mm boot width to make the car as practical as it is good-looking. The F-PACE isn’t just about luxury car accoutrements and on road manners – it’s safe too. This is largely thanks to innovative safety systems including autonomous emergency braking, driver condition monitoring and reverse traffic detection with blind spot monitor and driver condition monitoring with lane keep assist. Given Jaguar’s sister brand Land Rover’s experience in extremely challenging terrain, it comes as no surprise that the Jaguar Land Rover engineering teams were always going to want the F-PACE to be more capable than a regular crossover. One example
98

of how it does is a special system called adaptive surface response that assesses terrain and changes its settings accordingly. With an 80 per cent aluminium body to ensure a lighter weight overall and outstanding dynamics, economy and emissions, plus a fantastic engine manufactured in Jaguar Land Rover’s stateof-the-art new UK facility, the new F-PACE really does seem to have an awful lot going for it. All of which suggests you’ll be able to enjoy the F-PACE in a lot more interesting new destinations and on many more adventures than any other Jaguar in history. eep in the Cotswolds a quiet revolution has taken place. Under the command of the very glamorous Carole Bamford a working farm has become a blueprint for modern life. For Carole, who along with her husband, Lord Bamford, chairman of JCB, run an owner breeder operation where you could say they grow their own racehorses. They have produced greats such as dual Oaks winner Sariska, Group 1 Prix du Diane winner Star of Seville and this year’s Dante Stakes victor Wings of Desire using the same set of principles that she first adopted when she set up Daylesford Organic, a farm to fork food business named after the couple’s Grade 1 listed Regency Cotswold stone home. The business, which has won numerous awards and spawned many imitators, began 35 years ago when it became the first farm in Staffordshire to turn over its lands to sustainable, organic farming. What began as a simple passion for real food and a desire to feed her children better has grown into Daylesford one of the most sustainable organic farms in the UK.
It started with wanting to make a difference, on a small, family level, she recalls. “There were two chance incidents which changed my thinking on food production and farming. The first was almost 40 years ago when we were living and farming in Staffordshire. I was in the garden with my eldest child when I noticed the roses that I had planted the day before, were wilting. I looked into this further and found out they had been spraying a very powerful herbicide on the farm and that the toxins had carried through the air from the fields to the roses. As a mother I was horrified and it led me to realise we couldn’t carry on farming in this way.” A conversation with the Soil Association at an agricultural show inspired her further. “It became clear that this way of farming was better not only for our family but also the environment and this led to the beginning of my passion for organic living. When I went home that evening, I spoke to my husband about converting our farm and using organic farming methods.” With milk one of its key products a meeting with artisan cheesemaker,

Joe Schneider, got her thinking about making their own cheddar. She hired him and as the farm began to produce more organic products including meat, seasonal fruit and veg, breads, cakes, soups she then started to think about where she could sell the cheese and other farm produce. This led to the opening of the first Daylesford farm shop in 2002 on the farm in Gloucestershire. Five years later she opened another and a café on the Pimlico Road. A premises in Notting Hill followed and another in Marylebone opened last year. Kate Moss and Liz Hurley are both fans of the award-winning produce. The reason? “We believe that when people eat natural, organic food, they can taste the difference, she explains. “It’s a chain of goodness that begins with healthy soil, and finishes with healthy animals and people. “When I first thought about converting our land to organic many people thought I was barmy and that it wouldn’t be possible or sustainable but here we still are more than 30 years on.” It’s an ethos that carries through to the stud farm side of the business where she rears the horses “in the most natural way. They live out as much as possible on our organic pastures”. Passionate about eating and living organically the entrepreneur has also launched
Bamford, a premium clothing company, organic wine brand Château Léoube, drinks partner to Goffs London Sale, and the Wild Rabbit, a pub with rooms. Her children feel similarily and, now parents themselves, are passing on the knowledge to Bamford’s five grand-children. “They too realise the importance of looking after the soil for future generations
and share the same desire to feed their children better for a healthier and more sustainable life.” Soak up the atmosphere with a stay on the farm in converted original farm buildings, sign up to the cookery school or a workshop at the Bamford Hay Barn spa. Daylesford.com

Doctor on call Based in Newmarket and nominated veterinary surgeon to the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the pre-purchase examiner at the Goffs London Sale, Mathilde Texier’s independent practice is in high demand by the industry. The racing season is in full swing again and Mathilde Texier has been touring England to vet racehorses. Mathilde J Texier DEDV MRCVS is an independent equine veterinary practice based in Newmarket, England, specialising in examining horses prior to purchase. Mathilde travels all around the UK, Europe and the Rest of the World to vet racehorses for racing or breeding and attends all major international sales. She is also a Hong Kong Jockey Club Nominated Veterinary Surgeon. With 25 years of experience in racehorse medicine and lameness and equipped with the latest state-of-the-art digital imaging technology, Mathilde offers a very personal and flexible service to suit the needs of both buyers
and vendors, with a renowned professional approach. Mathilde carries out the pre-purchase examination of all the UK and French based horses sold at the Goffs London Sale, held on the Eve of Royal Ascot at The Orangery of Kensington Palace. A ‘5 stage vetting’ for a racehorse consists in a very thorough clinical examination over 5 stages, standing in the stable and outside, moving in the yard in hand, ridden on the gallops, followed by a further assessment during and after the post exercise recovery. A video-endoscopic examination of the lower and upper airways is carried out after strenuous exercise, as well as a comprehensive radiographic examination
of all the important joints and bony structures and an ultrasonographic examination of all the essential tendons and ligaments. The breeding potential of future broodmares and stallions is also assessed, and laboratory tests for exportation, breeding purposes and/or drug tests are carried out if required. Mathilde adheres to the Veterinary Protocol for the Examination of Racehorses for Importation into Hong Kong, which sets the ultimate gold standard in pre-purchase examination. This assessment is then illustrated in a detailed written report.

MORE AND MORE BREEDERS ARE
“We have been using Equilume masks on barren and maiden mares for the last three years and the results have been fantastic! The mares cycle just as well as if they were boxed under lights and pregnancy rates on first cover have also noticeably increased. The masks have become a big part of our breeding season preparation.”
The Equilume light mask ensures early cyclicity in mares, optimises foal birth weights and improves your mares overall breeding efficiency.
Shane Wright, Manager, Yarraman Park Stud, AUS
‘Seeing the Light’! The revolutionary Irish innovation that is the Equilume Light Mask has been gaining traction increasingly within the global Thoroughbred breeding sector. The age-old tradition of putting mares ‘under lights’ has been challenged, and the results are in. Mobile lighting works - and not just to get mares cycling early. Farms around the world are witnessing improvements in the overall breeding efficiency of their pregnant mares, as gestation lengths are tightened, foal birth weights optimised and post-foaling fertility rates increased. All this is due to the benefit of precisely timed mobile blue light therapy in the pregnant mare’s final trimester. Eliminating the need
for additional hormone treatments and veterinary visits, which can be costly. But don’t just take our word for it… “We at Taylor Made used the Equilume Light Masks on over 50 barren and maiden mares this season to bring forward seasonal reproductive activity. We found that the Light Masks worked just as well as conventional stable lighting at ensuring early cyclicity. In addition, we believe that there are significant advantages to extended turn-out for mares that Equilume facilitates.” Frank Taylor, Vice President, Taylor Made Sales Agency and Stud Farm, Nicholasville, KY, USA
“We used the Equilume Light Masks last season on a selection of our in-foal mares with a history of long gestation lengths. We found that the masks worked to good effect and resulted in a significant reduction in gestation lengths compared to previous gestations in the same mares. We intend to use them again.” Julian Dollar, General Manager, Newsells Park Stud, UK For preparing sales horses, Equilume masks are also being used for coat shedding and to improve muscle response to exercise, meaning that ‘summer vigour’ can be attained in early spring, or maintained late into the Autumn to keep sales horses looking their best.

Cape Thoroughbred Sales With its constant process of renewal and improvement CTS is enhancing the nation’s stud book, the South African bloodstock sales market and performances at the racetrack. Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) continue to spark exciting trends in the South African bloodstock market with their highly regarded niche market auctions attracting increasing international interest. Not only is South Africa a wonderful travel destination, but top SAF racehorses have proven they can tussle with the best, and represent tremendous value at current exchange rates. CTS showcase quality stock from reputable breeders, and many of these graduates race with distinction in prestigious races around the country. Or, like Variety Club, the world’s third highest ranked horse in 2014, go on to make a serious impact abroad. CTS auctions are always smoothly run, hospitable affairs. Earlier in 2016, South African records were broken with the highest price for a filly and colt attained at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Best Kept Secret, a daughter of Captain Al, sold for R5.25 million (222 000 GBP) to Tina Rau Bloodstock/MV Magnier and a son of Silvano, Silver Coin went for R6 million (GBP 254 000) in a partnership between Coolmore Stud and Mayfair Speculators. A similarly high-powered international collaboration saw Dynasty colt, Dynasty’s Blossom purchased for R4.25 million to be raced by the same partnership together with Dr Andreas Jacobs’, Maine Chance Farms. In addition to the big names already mentioned, agent Amanda Skiffington has sourced smart purchases for prominent owners Fiona Carmichael and Ian Jennings. Kip Elser and John Kilbride are also active, with the Doyle’s and Nagle’s amongst other converts to buying, racing and luxuriating in these sunny climes.
The objective of growing the sport of racing has seen CTS massively boost the stakes pot by running a special incentive program with qualifying yearlings eligible for Million Dollar Races (over 1200m and 1600m) to again be held in Cape Town during January 2017 on the Investec Day Of Dreams. Each race beckons temptingly with stakes of USD 500,000. In a constant process of renewal and improvement, a batch of premium quality fillies and mares from Ireland and Europe featured on a CTS Select Fillies and Mare Sale in June. The opportunities seized by discerning breeders at that particular sale are bound to enhance the SA Stud Book for future generations and maintain international competitiveness, something that is at the heart of CTS business practice.

HISTORY
1868
THE FIRST THOROUGHBRED SALE The first breeding operation in Ireland to produce young thoroughbreds for sale was the Palmerstown Association, founded by Lord Naas (later Lord Mayo) in the 1860s and taking its name from his home beside the present day Goffs sales complex. In June 1868 the Sale of Palmerstown yearlings included the subsequent 1870 Irish Derby winner Billy Pitt.
1870s MULTI SELLERS
Throughout the 1870s and 1880s Goffs’ selling skills covered a broad range of subjects including sales of felled trees, hay cocks, swede turnips and even manure.
Mining for
GOLD IN HIS EXTENSIVE RESEARCH FOR GOFFS, MEMOIR OF AN IRISH AUCTION HOUSE, A 240-PAGE COFFEE TABLE BOOK THAT CELEBRATES 150 YEARS OF ITS BUSINESS IN BLOODSTOCK, NICK NUGENT, DISCOVERED THESE GEMS.

RARE BARGAINS At 270gns, the 1958 Derby winner Hard Ridden was a rare bargain yet his price should have been even less! At the 1956 Goffs September Yearling Sales, Sir Victor Sassoon, bidding from across the ring, was unaware that the person pushing him hard was his trainer, Mickey Rogers who, likewise, was oblivious to the identity of his opponent.

BROWN JACK
1936
One of the greatest horses sold by Goffs is Brown Jack. He won the 1928 Champion Hurdle as a four-year-old BEFORE winning the Ascot Stakes in 1928 and then an extraordinary sequence of six consecutive wins in Ascot’s Queen Alexandra Stakes, between 1929 and 1934.
RECORD PRICES Certain broodmares have made a lasting impression on bloodstock sales including Lord Fingall’s Fleche D’Or. In 1936 her son by Monarch achieved a record price for a yearling when selling for 2,700gns and his half-brother secured the top price in 1937. For a third successive year, a yearling out of Fleche D’Or topped the 1938 yearling sale.

1962
SURPRISE VICTORY
1970s
SOFT SELL

Goffs
The 1962 Derby remains one of the most eventful in the history of the race. Twenty six horses started but only 19 finished and the race was won by a 22/1 outsider. Despite his generous odds Larkspur’s victory wasn’t a total surprise. He’d caught several people’s eye as a yearling at the 1960 Goffs September Sales, comfortably topping a week when all records were broken, including the average, at 1,279gns.
Until the mid-1970’s Goffs held several Sales for non-thoroughbreds. The early lots at Ballsbridge often comprised half-bred horses and, during Dublin Horse Show week, they would occupy a complete day’s trading. It is not surprising, therefore, that one of show jumping’s best and most loved performers Mister Softee should have been found at Goffs.
1975
The first sale in Kill in 1975 produced a new European record price for a yearling, 127,000gns for Moyglare Stud’s Northern Dancer colt out of What A Treat. Vincent BE MY GUEST O’Brien made the purchase on behalf of Diana Guest Manning and the colt would be named Be My Guest. Be My Guest’s achievements were such that he is celebrated with a bronze statue at the entrance to the sales complex in Kill.
1950s & 60s WINNING WAYS
Paddy Prendergast’s four Irish Derby winners were all sourced at Goffs: Dark Warrior (775gns) and Thirteen of Diamonds (470gns foal) both won in the 1950s. More brilliant were Ragusa (3,800gns) and Meadow Court (3,000gns), a colt who was just unfortunate to be born in the same year as Sea Bird.
1975 THE YOUNG GUNS In 1975 the three principal bloodstock roles in the company were occupied by Jonathan Irwin as managing director, Philip Myerscough as marketing director and David Nagle as sales director. Their average age was just 29.
1976
In 1976 the McGrath family’s Brownstown Stud decided on a policy of selling, without reserve, all their yearlings in pairs, with TWIN PEAKS the highest bidder choosing one afterwards and the stud retaining the other to be trained. The policy was implemented as the McGraths felt that buyers might consider that the farm had retained the best of their crop if only half their yearlings were offered for sale.
1978
In September 1978 Ballyrogan Stud’s yearling daughter of Mill Reef and WORLD RECORD Hardiemma set a world record price for a yearling filly, 250,000gns. That summer the filly’s full-brother Shirley Heights had won the Derby at Epsom. Ted Naughton, the manager of Mrs Jill Weal’s farm, had purchased Hardiemma carrying the sale-topping filly. At just 15,000gns she had cost only a little more than the Mill Reef covering fee.

1999
The 1999 winners of the 2000 Guineas and Derby, Island Sands and Oath were part of a very special story. Island Sands was bred by Mrs T.V. Ryan’s Kilcoran House Stud and sold for just 18,000gns at the 1997 FAMILY VALUES Goffs Yearling Sale. Mrs Ryan’s daughter Isabel and her husband Max Morris owned the Iverk House Stud in Co Kilkenny, who sold Oath for 450,000gns. Mother and daughter breeding the winners of two great Classic races in the space of six weeks. Unbelievable and, almost certainly, unrepeatable.
1990s WINNING STREAK
Aidan O’Brien has trained well over 250 Group & Grade 1 winners. The first of these came at the Curragh when Walter Swinburn guided home Desert King in the Aga Khan Studs National Stakes. The following season, this son of Danehill would provide his trainer with first wins in the Irish 2000 Guineas and the Irish Derby, ridden on both occasions by Christy Roche. Desert King had been bred and sold as a yearling at Goffs by the Irish National Stud.
