INTRODUCTION

Welcome “Remember this day as you’ll never see another horse like him”

6

Goffs

I

spoke those words to my son, George as we left Leopardstown on Saturday 5th September 2009 after witnessing the stunning victory of Sea The Stars in the Irish Champions Stakes. At the time I truly believed it and was so glad that George, then aged 16, and I had shared that historic moment. No one knew then that Frankel would be along in a matter of years and, whether he is the best ever or simply one of them, or better than Sea The Stars, is largely irrelevant as he treated the racing public to a simply extraordinary display of racing prowess on every racecourse appearance. It was with some pride that Goffs offered Frankel’s first ever foal at public auction at our inaugural London Sale last year and then recorded a record price of €1.8 million in November for his daughter of the Classic winning Goffs yearling Finsceal Beo. That price proved to be the highest in Europe for 12 years, the third highest ever (only behind a brother to Generous and a son of Urban Sea) and more than £/€ 1 million higher than at any other foal sale last year. Frankel’s dominance at Goffs looks set to continue at this year’s Orby Sale which Clive Webb-Carter highlights in his excellent Orby Sale preview. Last year’s London Sale was a pivotal event for Goffs as it propelled us on to the global stage in a most positive fashion. One significant and enthusiastic attendee was the legendary Australian Trainer, Gai Waterhouse who walked away with two lots that have gone on to great success. She chats to Donn McClean about her life and methods whilst Emma Berry reports on the second London Sale. The global nature of the bloodstock business means that new forces can appear at any time to challenge the status quo. In the 1980s the Maktoum family literally

burst onto the scene and have proved such a positive influence across the globe. More recently the Al Thanis from Qatar have quickly become hugely influential, not least to Goffs as QIPCO has generously supported our efforts in London. The newest big player is the China Horse Club who certainly made an impact at last year’s Orby when buying the highest priced Sea The Stars colt of the year. In a fascinating insight into his vision for the future, Teo Ah Khing took time out to chat to us. At the other end of the time-served spectrum is Pat O’Kelly, arguably the most influential independent vendor at Goffs in the last 30 plus years. Her record as a breeder and vendor is quite staggering and her interview is fascinating. Another familiar name featured in these pages is Yeomanstown Stud, home to the O’Callaghan clan who regularly send such quality to Goffs. This latest Goffs publication is packed full of fascinating interviews and articles and also includes a profile of our newest agent, Gatewood Bell in Kentucky, alongside reports from the multitude of international trips undertaken by the Goffs team including Goffs Chairman Eimear Mulhern’s recent trip to Japan. The fruits of those labours (of love) will be revealed at our sales this year and next, but Eimear, the whole Goffs team and I look forward to your visit; hopefully these pages will encourage you to come and see us sooner rather than later.

Decades of Hoofbeats Col William Hall Walker would have been proud to know the farm he created at Tully has made such an impact on the world stage. Last year we bred a Classic winner, stood a champion sire and topped a day’s trading at the Autumn foal sales. Of course that’s nothing unusual. We’re simply maintaining the traditions bestowed upon us by a great visionary well over a century ago.

Going

GLOBAL

IT HAS BEEN A BUSY YEAR FOR THE GOFFS MARKETING TEAM TRAVELLING THE WORLD TO ENSURE A STRONG ATTENDANCE FROM INTERNATIONAL BUYERS AT THIS AUTUMN’S YEARLING, FOAL AND BREEDING STOCK SALES.

Goffs is strongly represented around the world with agents in Australia, the US, Japan, China, South America, Scandinavia, Italy and Germany who work year-round to spread the good word of Goffs and the Irish thoroughbred. In addition, many of Goffs’ Kildare-based team spend a considerable portion of their year on the road meeting existing and potential new clients. Chief Executive Henry Beeby travelled to Dubai where he and Goffs Chairman Eimear Mulhern were privileged to be guests of Sheikh Mohammed at this year’s World Cup meeting. This most enjoyable visit proved enormously worthwhile as they met with many international breeders and racing professionals in attendance.

In April Henry went to the Spring Meeting in Kentucky along with US agent Gatewood Bell to promote the London, Orby and November Sales. They also visited several farms which resulted in two Kittens Joy yearlings coming to the Orby. The number of US buyers at Goffs is on the increase and Henry will return to Kentucky for the September Yearling Sales. He will later take in the Breeders Cup en route to the Keeneland Breeding Stock Sales on the lookout for Goffs November Sale clients. Eimear Mulhern joined Goffs agent Takaya Kimura on a three day visit to Japan in July to study the market and meet with existing and potential clients. As well as hosting an evening for Japanese breeders, she visited many of

the country’s major farms including Big Red Farm and Eishen Farm to see mares that were bought at Goffs and their offspring. At the JRHA July Select Sale, it was notable to see 27 mares that were Stakes winners in Ireland with produce in the catalogue including the Goffs-sold Barefoot Lady and Four Sins. Eimear was delighted to have the opportunity to congratulate Mr Yasushi Kubota, owner of recent Stakes winner Realtra who he purchased at this year’s London Sale, whilst in Japan. Elaine Lawlor’s globetrotting year of racing and sales began with the Magic Millions Yearling Sales on Australia’s Gold Cost in January, and she also attended the Easter Sales in Sydney. Several visits to the US included sales in Ocala and Saratoga, and she will return in September with Henry for the yearling sales in Kentucky. The latter part of the year will see Legs return to Australia for the Melbourne Cup festival where she will join Goffs agent Mark Player in promoting the Goffs November Sales. The activity of Qatari buyers at Goffs and the success of Goffs graduates in Qatar are on the rise, and this market has been a particular focus of Joey Cullen’s for several years. Amongst many market visits undertaken by Joey this year was a trip to HH The Emir International Equestrian Sword Festival in Doha where he saw Goffs Champions Sale graduate Ponfeigh run a close second to Dubday in the Group 1 H.H. The Emir’s Trophy for trainer Debbie Mountain, and Itorio, a fellow Champions Sale purchase, finish second in the Group 1 The Emir’s Shalfa Trophy. Nick Nugent was a familiar face at almost every major UK and Irish race meeting throughout the season in pursuit of Horses In Training entries for both the Goffs London Sale and the Goffs Champions Sale at Leopardstown. Sophie Candy had a busy year travelling back and forth to the UK for race meetings and yard visits on behalf of Goffs and will attend the European Jockeys Cup in Prague ahead of the Orby and Sportsman’s Sales. Bloodstock Executive Sean Flannery meanwhile has some long-haul journeys under his belt over the last year having accompanied a Trade Mission to China as well as a trip to Hong Kong where he bid spotted at the International Sale in March.

Brilliant Bloodlines GOFFS US AGENT GATEWOOD BELL TALKS GROUP 1 SUCCESS AND IRISH BREDS WITH JAY HOVDEY.

T

here was a point in the educational life of Gatewood Bell when he was briefly tempted to pursue a career in high finance. If things went well, he figured that one of the perks would be owning a stable of thoroughbreds, which to his mind was about the best thing you could do with your money if you wanted your fun guaranteed. But it would take time, Bell knew, to realize such a dream. And the thought of hacking through the jungles of Wall Street was not very appealing to a young man raised with plenty of elbow room in Kentucky and possessed of a built-in thoroughbred heritage. So Bell did a pivot. He immersed himself in the thoroughbred world of his widely-respected father, Darley America president Jimmy Bell, and of his legendary grandfather, John A. Bell of Jonabell Farm. He apprenticed with trainer Kiaran McLaughlin in New York and worked for the sales agencies of family members Reynolds Bell and Headley Bell. “Instead of waiting to be a millionaire before I could enjoy thoroughbreds, I decided it

was best for me to enjoy working in the business every day, and as soon as I could,” Bell said. Eventually, Gatewood Bell established his own Cromwell Sales Agency, and now Bell has been tabbed by Goffs to represent the international sales company in the United States, where his mission is to spread the gospel of the Irish racehorse to potential American investors. Bell will protest that he is “not really that great of a promoter,” which is belied by the fact that his young agency already has Grade and Group 1 winners Gypsy Robin and Undrafted to its credit. He also concedes that the Irish thoroughbred needs very little introduction. “On my first visit there I went to a few farms, on land that had been used to raise horses for hundreds of years,” Bell said. “Being from Kentucky I maybe shouldn’t be saying this, but in Ireland you kind of feel like you’re in the birthplace of the horse. It’s a little bit like walking into Augusta National if you’re a golf fan.” Still, trends in thoroughbred commerce rise and fall, and with the dollar a bit

stronger these days and Americans reviving their taste for thoroughbreds of all shapes and pedigrees, Bell views his Goffs connection as a chance to help invigorate the breed through such venues as the Orby Sale of 487 Irish-bred yearlings, to be held September 29 and 30. “I think you’re seeing more in the past few years that some owner-breeders in America notice the tables might have shifted a little bit,” Bell said. “They’ve got some sire power over there in Ireland, and some female bloodlines that I think would be in our best interests to try and brings back to America and balance back out. It’s a little more turf oriented, obviously, but then you’ll find a nice horse like Lea, who is out of a Galileo mare.” Bell, 33 and the father of three, spent quality time at the knee of his grandfather, who founded Jonabell Farm in 1954. John Bell raised Damascus and Never Say Die, and stood champions Affirmed and Holy Bull and such successful stallions as Halo and Vigors before selling Jonabell to Sheikh Mohammed in 2001. John Bell died in 2007. “My grandfather and I had a great relationship,” Bell said. “When someone tells me I have his sense of humor, you couldn’t give me a better compliment. I know it sounds corny, but he always tried to do the right thing and never did wrong by anybody. He passed that on to my dad, and I think it came to me, too.” Chances are, Bell will have many opportunities to add to the family history. He got a pretty good leg up last June when he represented Undrafted’s owner, NFL star Wes Welker, at Royal Ascot, where the winner of the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint was competing in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee. When Undrafted won the race, Bell received the owners’ trophy from The Queen. “In my office I’ve got one picture hanging on the wall,” Bell said. “It’s of my grandfather and Queen Elizabeth when she came to visit. When she asked where I was from, it gave me the opportunity to tell her about the photo. She acted like she remembered the day it was taken. And you know, I believe she did.”

LONDON SALE

FOR CENTURIES, Royal Ascot has been famed not just for the excellent racing on offer, but also as a key date in the British social calendar. It is where high society meets high stakes. So what better way to capitalise on an event which draws racing people from all over the world than to add a garden party with a twist to the week’s social functions, held in a royal palace on the eve of the royal meeting? That twist, of course, was the fact that the glamorous central London location was first and foremost the scene for a bloodstock sale, the like of which had never been seen before. The opening act of 2014 proved to be the ultimate crowd-pleaser: the first of any of Frankel’s offspring to be sold publicly anywhere in the world, Johnny Murtagh coming out of retirement to ride high on Joey from War Horse, and 21 horses to be sold on the night each holding an enticing entry for Royal Ascot. It was certainly always going to be a hard act to follow. But the enterprising team at Goffs has proved it is more than equal to the challenge as it has gone about raising the profile of its major auctions throughout the year and the 2015 London Sale, which was once again held in association with QIPCO, was no exception. Granted, some of the novelty value was absent but its unique core objective of offering an array of horses for sale with Royal Ascot engagements was again readily met as the entries rolled in.

QIPCO If the acronym QIPCO, which stands for Qatar Investment & Projects Development Holding Company, was relatively unknown in Britain and Ireland a few years ago, within the racing community it is now pretty much a household name. The private investment company owned by six brothers from Qatar’s royal family, including Qatar Racing’s principal Sheikh Fahad bin Abdullah Al Thani, was formed back in 1999 but its close alliance with racing was forged with its generous backing of the QIPCO British Champions Series, which culminates annually at Ascot on British Champions Day. QIPCO, which is also one of the major sponsors of the Irish Champions Weekend, hit the headlines again in June when extending its financial support of the British Champions Series, as well as Newmarket’s Guineas Festival and Ascot racecourse, in a landmark £50 million deal, the largest ever in British racing. Its official partner status with Ascot, which includes the Royal Meeting, also makes QIPCO a natural running mate for the Goffs London Sale in its proximity to British racing’s most prestigious occasion and it has lent its valued support since the outset. David Redvers, Racing Manager to Sheikh Fahad, said when the first Goffs London Sale was launched: “Sheikh Fahad and his brothers are excited by the concept of a London sale and are delighted to support what we all hope will become a strong and vibrant fixture in the sales calendar. It is a brave step by Henry Beeby and team to grasp this concept and take it forward and it deserves to succeed not just because of the location and timing but also because of it offers the industry another platform. We will be working hard with Goffs to make sure the sale and pre-Ascot party goes from strength to strength.”

With the business side of the function set to take place as afternoon turned to evening, the scene was appropriately set with a pre-sale afternoon tea in the manicured gardens of The Orangery. As brand partners, it would be hard to find one more quintessentially English than Fortnum and Mason, which provided the lavish fare on offer, while Goffs renewed its association with Château Léoube, the French vineyard which kept guests refreshed with its delicious pale rosé. Major owners, trainers and bloodstock agents from around the world filled the guest list, which was augmented with a touch

of royalty with Princess Michael of Kent in attendance. Plenty of Australians now make the annual pilgrimage to Ascot and, following the exploits of 2014 London Sale graduate Pornichet, who won the Group 1 Doomben Cup in Queensland in May after being bought by trainer Gai Waterhouse, it was no surprise to hear plenty of Australian accents among the gathered crowd. Prior to the horses with form going under the hammer, a select group of breeze-up horses took to the ring. The Goffs team pledged to listen to the views of consignors after the inaugural sale and

thus, after discussion, the major difference this time around was that the 18 two-year-olds were auctioned on site at Kensington Palace rather than via video link to Kempton Park racecourse, where they had breezed the previous morning. Mocklershill’s Speightstown colt out of the Argentinean dual Grade 1 winner Battallosa provided an early splash once the serious action had got underway when selling to Sheikh Fahad Al Thani for £200,000, and he remained at the head of the chart for the unraced horses.

The magical seven-figure mark had been breached at the first London Sale when the following day’s Group 2 Coventry Stakes runner-up Cappella Sansevero had been sold to Qatar Racing for £1.3 million. Such dizzy heights weren’t quite attained 12 months later but the suitably regally named Majestic Queen did bring the background chatter to a halt as her price rocketed ever skywards, finally settling at £825,000. Two superpowers of the racing and breeding world – Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum and the China Horse Club – prompted Goffs Orby

Majestic Queen’s owners, Tommy and Terry Rogers, who had bought her as a yearling with the help of agent Cathy Grassick for just €18,000 at the Goffs Sportsman Sale, were present at the sale and were moved to tears at her eventual price tag. else it was a lovely party and such a wonderful day. “In a way it was a reluctant sale – Majestic Queen had done so well for us on the racecourse and we were sad to see her go but you have to let go. We’re pleased that she went to Sheikh Mohammed who is I think sending her to Dubai, which we’d love to have done. “It was a memorable and emotional day and the fact that she sold so well made it better still. It was a dream story really when you think of the price we bought her for.” The international theme to the buying bench didn’t stop at the top lot, with Dubai-based Scotsman Dr Jim Hay adding winning Oasis Dream two-year-old Mirage to his string of horses in training for £380,000, while Japanese owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto made the most of his first foray to the London Sale by signing for the Royal Ascot-bound Realtra for £290,000. Qatar’s champion trainer Jassim Ghazali enjoys his shopping trips to Britain and had already given his vote of confidence to the Goffs London Sale when buying Trinityelitedotcom for £120,000 in 2014. He was back for more this time around, and opted for the stakes-placed juveniles Black Beach and Nelspruit, at £220,000

and £100,000 respectively, on behalf of owner Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari. In his summarising of an event which is now certain to be etched in the diaries of many of the bloodstock industry’s leading players year after year, Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby has this to say: “A global audience converged on The Orangery for a superb curtain-raiser for Royal Ascot and a wonderful evening for Goffs. While we didn’t quite hit the high spots of last year, we were delighted with the second edition of Goffs London Sale. “The best of the breeze-up horses sold well and there was very strong trade for horses in training, with median price up by 27 per cent. Any time that the vendor of the top lot is reduced to tears of joy is a good sign!” There’s no doubt that the London Sale is far removed from the tried and trusted format of bloodstock auctions around the world but at no other sale can potential buyers propel themselves from the gardens of a royal palace to the parade ring of Royal Ascot within days. The lure of that promise alone is enough to keep racing’s elite hooked on the idea of some high-end horse-trading at one of the best parties in town.

INTERVIEW

PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA WOOD NEED FOR STEED

My father taught me everything I know and I still use many of the methods he developed.

WHERE TO START with Gai Waterhouse? Maybe start with the achievements. She has trained the winner of the Golden Slipper six times, and she has trained the winner of the Doncaster Handicap seven times. For those not fluent in all things Antipodean, the Golden Slipper and the Doncaster Handicap are reportedly to Sydney what the Orby Sale and the November sale are to Goffs. In 2001, she trained the first three home in the Golden Slipper, a feat never accomplished before or since. And yes, she has trained a Melbourne Cup winner. Go back a step. Gai was bred for this. Her dad, TJ Smith, was a racing legend. Literally. Having been inducted to Australia’s Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in 2001, he was given Legend status in 2012. He won the Sydney Trainers’ Premiership every

year for 33 years, his first in 1953, his last in 1985. He trained two Melbourne Cup winners – Toparoa in 1955 and Just A Dash in 1981 – four Caulfield Cup winners, six Golden Slipper winners and seven Cox Plate winners. “My father trained me,” says Gai. “He taught me everything I know and I still use many of the methods he developed in the years after the War today.” Gai herself was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2007. There’s the context, now proceed. She was born to train racehorses, but not immediately. She started out after college as a model and an actor, broadening horizons. “After graduating from university, I was on the first plane over to the Old Dart (said in an Australian accent and understand: England) to work in theatre.” She worked on the famous Australian soap opera The Young Doctors, and she starred as Presta alongside the quintessential Dr Who, Tom Baker, on four episodes of the eponymous BBC series in 1978. But horses were always in her blood. She returned to Tulloch Lodge and worked as assistant trainer to her dad for 15 years. Granted her trainer’s licence in 1992, she prepared Te Akau Nick, an unconsidered 160/1 shot, for the 1993 Melbourne Cup, Vintage Crop’s Melbourne Cup as it turned out. After convincing owner David Ellis to pay the $10,000 final acceptance fee, Gai sent out Te Akau Nick to finish second to Dermot Weld’s horse. She took over at Tulloch Lodge in 1994, and sent out Nothin’ Leica Dane to win the Victoria Derby in 1995. Three days later she sent the Danehill colt out to finish second to Doriemus in the Melbourne Cup. It was a massive effort by the fledgling trainer, her second runner-up in the Melbourne Cup in three years, and by the three-year-old colt. No three-year-old had won the Melbourne Cup since Skipton in 1941, and none has won it since. There is a bit of the Aidan O’Brien about Gai Waterhouse. She is always pushing boundaries, always exploring options, always trying new ways. She says that she gets up at 2.00am most mornings, and that she still feels she is behind. Reminds you of Aidan O’Brien coming home from Royal Ascot every night, work to be done at home, because he doesn’t feel that he can afford the time to stay away. That’s perfectionists for you. Gai travels the world, still broadening horizons. You are as likely to find her at Royal Ascot or at Flemington or Sydney as you are to find her at The Orangery in Kensington Palace or the JRHA Sale at Northern Horse Park in Tomakomai. “The world has become smaller and it is easier to link together all the different racing jurisdictions. We can read pedigree charts

instantly on the internet, we can view photographs of sires and yearlings from anywhere in the world at any given time. We can watch race replays minutes after the horses have passed the post at almost racetrack in the world. My husband Rob can view international form with the click of a mouse rather than having to wait weeks for documents to be mailed.” As such, she is better-placed than most to appreciate the differences between European racing and Australian racing. For starters, racing tactics are different. “The positioning of a horse in a race is different,” she says. “I teach my horses from a very early age to jump and run. This is not necessarily an advantage in England or Ireland. In Australia, most of our races are run and won around a bend. I like my horses to be balanced and full of momentum when they corner, then they have to negotiate, on average throughout Australia, a 350-metre straight. At Royal Ascot, the majority of the races are completed up the straight, and it looked to my eye that the horses that were full of running at the two-furlong pole were invariably being run down. Interestingly, feeds are also different. “On my recent trip to Newmarket with a horse in work, I couldn’t help but notice the vast differences in feed. In Australia all the feeds are individually made and quantities of corn and oats are much higher. I use blends of tic bean, chaff, lucerne, salt and molasses plus additives. This helps build muscle and gives the horse extra stamina. In Newmarket, most of the stables I visited had a pre-mixed feed.” But the internationalisation of racing continues unabated, and Gai is a proponent.

Gai On ... GOFFS LONDON SALE

ROYAL ASCOT

THE MELBOURNE CUP

The London sale concept is a smart idea and as it is still in its infancy, I have no doubt it will continue to grow. Any sale, and the London Sale is no exception, needs to have the best horses available and for them to be affordable. Sales also need to be well patronised by the vendors. I have no doubt Goffs London Sale will continue to grow. With the sale on the eve of the world’s biggest race meeting, everyone is running around and very busy. It will just take a little practice but this sale certainly has a world of potential.

There is a renewed excitement at Royal Ascot now. Everyone from Australia and abroad that I have talked to who went to this year’s fiveday meeting shared the same excitement. The racecourse, the facilities and the pomp and pageantry, certainly give punters value for their money. The best horses from all over the world compete, the track plays evenly and everyone who attends the races is there for the horses and the racing. Yes, fashion is still a major draw card, particularly for some of the ladies, but the Ascot crowd is a racing crowd first and foremost.

It is the race that stops a nation. I once read a quote from the legendary race caller Bert Bryant that stated: ‘Countless thousands stop whatever it is they are doing on the afternoon of the first Tuesday of November each year, whether they are debating matters of great importance in Parliament House, Canberra, or washing the baby’s nappies in a miner’s hut at Cooper Pedy, and for three and a half minutes they transport themselves to the rose-bedecked lawns at Flemington.’ Australia stops for this race. In the lead up all the talk is about the Cup. Almost everyone in the country has an interest in it.

Australian runners at Royal Ascot, European runners in the Melbourne Cup, Tom Hogan winning the George Ryder Stakes with Gordon Lord Byron, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Adelaide (Australianamed but Irish-bred and Irish-trained) winning the Cox Plate. It’s all good. “Horses from all over the world are travelling more often in greater numbers to all the major meetings around the world,” she says. “We have a lot of Group and Listed races in Australia. International horses have won a few of these races, but they have hardly dominated our racing, especially our races up to the mile. Yes, the European breed are performing well in the Melbourne Cup and other staying events at the minute, but in a previous era it was the Japanese horses, and before that it was the New Zealand horses that were winning our greatest races. Things change in racing all the time and racing is

truly a global industry. I am proud to say that Australia is an integral part of global racing and will be for a long time to come.” There was a time when the accepted wisdom was that a horse trained in the Northern Hemisphere could not win the Melbourne Cup. That all changed in 1993, however, and the message resonated around Media Puzzle in 2002 and the Japanese 1-2 in 2006. Now, three of the last five winners were trained in Europe and all five originated there. The 2013 winner was the Ballymacoll Stud-bred Fiorente, Gai Waterhouse’s first, and that was massive. “Fiorente was the favourite,” says Gai, “and in the days leading up to the race, hundreds of people were coming up to me in the street and wishing me luck. I wanted so desperately to win the race for myself and my team, but also for all the people who had wished me luck and had who told

I am proud to say that Australia is an integral part of global racing and will be for a long time to come.

THE FUTURE OF THE AUSTRALIAN BLOODSTOCK INDUSTRY Australia is part of the global racing industry, a big part, and international owners and breeders, in greater numbers than ever, are looking Down Under for speed in their horses. With more and more stallions shuttling around the world, Aussie sires will be much more sought-after throughout the world. As we speak, plenty of our Aussie-bred horses are being sold to Asia, and many of these horses are by sires that I selected, purchased and trained. For a while now, a big part of our bloodstock industry has been based on speed, but it is slowly changing. Well, not changing, but developing to become a much more even spread between speed and stamina. We have Golden Slipper winners producing Derby winners and middle distance champions like Lonhro producing Slipper winners. Australia has a huge bloodstock industry and I predict it will continue to grow and therefore change for the better.

Morning track work in the bullring.

There is no better feeling than when a plan comes off, just as it did with Pornichet.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY

me they would be having their money on Fiorente. I knew I had the horse, I knew he had the miles in his legs and I just hoped and prayed that he would at least get his chance in running. “Damien Oliver gave him the perfect ride and the rest is history. Before Fiorente won the Cup, I had won almost every other major race in Australia, some many times over, and I had achieved a lot in my training career. But winning the Cup was something completely new. It is something I had been trying to do for twenty years and it certainly has been the highlight of my career to date.” At last year’s Goffs London Sale, Gai purchased two horses. The first was Café Society, who finished third in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot a couple of days after Gai bought him. “Café Society has surprised me and he is fast developing into a quality stayer. He

may make it to the 2015 Melbourne Cup and he may not. He is still only young. While horses like Fiorente land in Australia and thrive from day one, others like The Offer can take 12 months. I was thrilled with Café Society’s run at Royal Ascot, and I knew that once I got the gelding back to Australia and got my claws into him, he would become a quality racehorse.” The second was Pornichet, who won the Group 1 Doomben Cup for Gai in May, and who could be a leading player in the Cox Plate in October. “There is no better feeling than when a plan comes off, just as it did with Pornichet. Rob felt that his profile was one that would suit the Australian racing scene perfectly and, as a physical type, I felt that he was quite a special colt. When he landed in Australia he was still quite mentally immature but everyone knows that I love a challenge. He could race quite keenly with

GAI’S GAZETTE After reading Mark Johnston’s racing magazine, Rob said that I should do something similar. ‘How the devil am I supposed to write a magazine on top of everything else I do?’ was my instant reply. But, as I have noticed for the last 30 years or more, Rob is rarely wrong. Together with my best friend Lea Stracey and academic Zeb Armstrong, we were able to put Gai’s Gazette together and it has grown exponentially. I am very proud of the content and I am pleased to report that we have been taken over by the brilliant lifestyle magazine, Highlife. So expect Gai’s Gazette to continue to grow.

I learned all I know from my dad and my husband Rob has been my backstop. He provides all the moral support I crave plus more, and he is one of the world’s great form men. Rob has had a major hand in picking all the stayers with which I have had success over the years. My children Tom and Kate have been unbelievably supportive. They both have forged their own careers and, while thriving in their respective fields, they could not have been more supportive of me and my business. Without the support of my family, there is no way I could have achieved what I have achieved.

his head in the air but with a bit of patience, my team and I taught him how to relax inrunning and find the line at the business end. I knew he possessed the talent to win a race like the Group 1 Doomben Cup, it was just a matter of maturity. He is the perfect candidate to win me my first Cox Plate. Watch this space because he will take a stack of beating.” Gai will continue to travel, continue to broaden her horizons. Europe will always be a part of what she does, and Ireland features strongly. “I travelled extensively throughout Europe in my early days both for pleasure and in theatre companies, and I was particularly fond of the Irish Hinterland during my early 20s. My son and daughter both got married in Europe, so the continent will forever be a special place for me and my family. Perhaps one day I will have a runner in Ireland, perhaps on Irish Champions Weekend, but first things first: a win at Royal Ascot, then I will see what happens from there. I do love international racing and I have a particular fondness for Ireland, so perhaps in the future, with the right horse, you never know.”

OR the man who took the aweinspiring Meydan racecourse from conception to completion in just 924 days, it was only fitting he would win one of the most coveted prizes in racing so soon after entering the sport. It was when architect and entrepreneur Teo Ah Khing was in Dubai overseeing the construction of the sleek, futuristic and monumental Meydan for Sheikh Mohammed that he saw the joy racing brought and resolved that his countrymen in China should also be exposed to the excitement of the sport of kings.

done. Indeed, he arrived in Australia to study without a word of English but graduated top of his class with a scholarship to Harvard. “I was also inspired by the fact no one had previously managed to bring racing to China - that’s the sort of challenge I relish,” he continues. “People said a project as ambitious as Meydan would be impossible, but we achieved it in three years. We did it. Bringing elite international racing to China is something I hope we can also do.” Teo appears to be well on the way to achieving his goal. The China Horse Club is structured to have 2,000 Solitaire members, – the top tier that is by invitation only – as well as Platinum Membership and Gold Membership, which is for younger recruits. The club owns 200 horses outright or in partnership, comprising foals,

I have huge respect for Irish-bred horses. China Horse Club attended Goffs, known for its highly athletic horses, for the first time last year.

Teo envisaged the China Horse Club in 2010, announced its inception in 2012 and the organisation celebrated its first winner with its first runner when the Fastnet Rock filly Scarlet Moretta scored at Sale racecourse in Victoria, Australia, in April 2013. Just over a year later Teo was in the winner’s enclosure at Epsom to welcome in Australia after he had landed the most famous Flat race in the world – the Derby. The China Horse Club owns the son of Galileo and Ouija Board in partnership with Coolmore, where he now stands as a stallion. In all, the club has won approximately 100 races in eight countries, including nine Group 1 races. “After being fortunate to have had success in a professional capacity, I wanted to give something back to the Chinese,” says Teo, described by those who know him as a pioneer who has big ideas and gets them

yearlings, horses in training and breeding stock in China, Australia, Singapore, Ireland, the UK, France and the US. It has also won Stakes races in each of these countries as well as Italy. There are also interests in seven stallions who are already retired or are set to be, such as star sprinter Wandjina, who gave the club its first Royal Ascot runner when an honourable sixth in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, and fellow Australian Dissident, a five-time Group 1 winner. Many of the horses are owned by the China Horse Club in association with other parties, and Teo says: “We want to draw strength from our partners. We’re very new and we respect that we have to earn our stripes. “There are other benefits too: the partnerships present business opportunities and chances to become involved in stallions. Goffs Orby

“It is also about the joy of sharing. Standing by yourself while watching a winner is good, but celebrating with others is better. Business partners can become friends, and vice versa.” The club offers premium leisure experiences and business networking opportunities in addition to the thrill of following the blue-chip thoroughbreds owned outright or in partnership. An advisory council of leading international businessmen that includes Coolmore supremo John Magnier, Newsells Park Stud owner Andreas Jacobs and the Queen’s racing manager John Warren provide the club with invaluable knowledge in building a racing and breeding empire. “We are forging links between China and the rest of the world,” explains Teo. “China wants to do well overseas and the club is a portal for international companies to come to China.

“We can’t build the industry by ourselves, so we welcome other people to come – we need more shoulders to the wheel.” To showcase Chinese achievement in racing at home and to international visitors, the China Horse Club has held race meetings under the banner of China Equine Cultural Festivals (CECF). The first was held at Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, the traditional centre of Asian horse culture, in 2013. In 2014 the CECF was held across three cities in Shanghai (gala dinner), Zhejiang (race day) and Kunshan (cultural visit) – the ‘financial engine room’ of China - and this year the CECF was held outside of the Chinese mainland for the first time – in Singapore, with the theme ‘east meets west’ and featuring the richest race ever held on the island. “We never stand still, we’re always moving,” says Teo. “Our goal is to spread the

gospel of racing, and we want to spread the word around China so the venues for the CECF moves, like the Breeders’ Cup. “At last year’s CECF we were keen to promote young Chinese jockeys and it was very rewarding that the Chinese jockeys won several races against the international jockeys. “It is important for the Chinese to see local talent succeed – we are creating a platform of excellence. The event is beamed to large television audiences and it is good for national pride to see Chinese athletes do so well.” “For all the CECFs there has been a cross-section of visitors from overseas. We want to bring people to China, contribute to China, experience Chinese culture, play a role in the future and help grow the industry.” So what’s next for Teo and the China Horse Club? He has done more than any-

FROM KILL TO CHINA THE China Horse Club last year made its first purchases at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale. The club’s regular buyer Michael Wallace, pictured left, signed for three colts – a son of Sea The Stars from Roundhill Stud for €850,000; a son of Rip Van Winkle from Lynn Lodge Stud for €170,000; and a son of Dream Ahead from Kildaragh Stud for €110,000. All are in training with Roger Varian, who says of the Sea The Stars colt: “He is progressing well. He is a definite athlete with a good action.” “We have huge respect for Irish-bred horses,” says Teo Ah Khing. “We elected to attend Goffs for the first time last year, as it is known for highly athletic horses. Reports on our purchases have been encouraging so far.” Teo attended the Goffs London Sale on the eve of Royal Ascot this year and the China Horse Club was underbidder on the top lot, dual Group 3-winning sprinter Majestic Queen. “It was a spectacular venue and spectacular sale that will only continue to grow. It is important to attract new people to the game and the London Sale certainly does that. “I hope when we return there will be a horse who wins our heart and we have the support to get them.” Goffs Orby

homegrown jockeys can showcase their talent by competing against the cream of riding talent from around the world at valuable race meetings. “The Chinese are aware and very proud of their position in the world today and want to play a role in that,” says Teo. “Success on the international stage in horse racing is very appealing, as the opportunity has not happened before.” There is also the small matter of continuing to build a racing and breeding industry almost from scratch. “Racing in mainland China was banned for approximately 70 years,” says Teo. “It was originally introduced at the same time as in Hong Kong, by the British just over 150 years ago. Just think: China could have been the biggest racing nation on earth if it had been allowed to grow. But interest is growing again.” Teo sums up the huge task he has ahead when he points out: “More people have walked on the moon than mainland Chinese who have won international Group 1 races.” But, as even the shortest time spent in this visionary figure’s presence reveals, if anyone is equipped to set that statistics right, it is him.

GREAT JUDGE: IT was a Goffs Orby graduate who provided Teo Ah Khing with one of his most special moments on the racecourse. Just The Judge (above left at Meydan) was bought as a yearling in 2011 by BBA Ireland and trainer Charlie Hills for €50,000 and went on to win the Rockfel Stakes, Irish 1,000 Guineas and EP Taylor Stakes in Canada. Last year the China Horse Club bought into the daughter of Lawman to race her and eventually breed from her with Qatar Racing. Just The Judge made one subsequent start in the two parties’ joint-ownership, in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan – the stately pleasure dome devoted to racing designed and built by Teo. She ran with plenty of credit to finish sixth behind Dolniya but in front of top international horses Main Sequence and Harp Star. “Just The Judge was my first runner at my first racecourse, so it was very special,” recalls Teo. “I put my heart and soul into Meydan. It is very rewarding to see it held aloft as an inspiration around the world. That will be something I treasure forever.”

Ireland’s BEST Bloodstock research and pedigree specialist Clive Webb-Carter previews this year’s outstanding Orby catalogue which has a significant Frankel factor. Photographs by Sarah Farnsworth.

Boasting a European Classic winner from all but one of its last 12 sales, the Goffs Orby Sale ranks as one of Europe’s premier auctions and features a fine selection of the very best Irish-bred yearlings. This season’s Irish Oaks winner, Covert Love, is the latest addition to Goffs’ Classic roll of honour and it is no surprise that the Orby has gone from strength to strength. Last year’s sale saw the aggregate rise to €38,802,000, a gain of 74 per

cent since the 2010 sale. With many of Europe’s sires proving to be the best worldwide, Goffs vendors have provided another top class catalogue with strong drafts by Dansili, Dark Angel, Galileo, Invincible Spirit, Mastercraftsman, Oasis Dream, Sea The Stars, Shamardal and Teofilo. The sale also sees an impressive collection of first crop sires which not only includes six lots by Frankel but also a strong array of new Group 1 winning sires. Goffs Orby

GOFFS FRANKEL FACTOR The ‘Frankel Factor’ looks set to follow the world’s best thoroughbred into the sale ring. In fact Goffs have already sampled success with the unbeaten champion. Goffs not only auctioned the first Frankel foal when selling a colt with his dam for £1,150,000 at the 2014 London Sale, but the filly foal out of Finsceal Beo was Europe’s most expensive foal sold at auction in 2014 when realising €1,800,000 last November.

FROM MOUNTARMSTRONG STUD One of the exceptional mares to visit Frankel in the spring of 2013 was Mountarmstrong Stud’s five-time Group 1 winner Alexander Goldrun. Winner of the Nassau Stakes and a duel Pretty Polly Stakes winner, Alexander Goldrun’s daughter will the first of the Frankel yearlings to be auctioned with her parents winning a combined total of 15 Group 1’s.

FROM BALLYLINCH STUD Ballylinch Stud’s smart Linamax mare, Dookus is another high quality dam with a Frankel colt to be offered. From a top-class Ballylinch family the half-brother to Prix Thomas Bryon winner and the Group 1-placed US Law shares the same granddam, the Phoenix Stakes winner Pharaoh’s Delight, with Galileo’s Breeders’ Cup winner Red Rocks.

FROM BARRONSTOWN STUD Barronstown Stud will offer another beautifully bred filly by Frankel. Out of a half-sister to Group 1 Grand Criterium winner Horatio Nelson, the filly is out of a Kingmambo daughter of dual Classic winner Imagine, herself a half-sister to Derby winner Generous.

FROM RATHBARRY STUD Frankel’s colt out of Rathbarry’s top-class producer Musical Treat looks destined for more Classic success for the mare who has already produced two Classic winners in Finsceal Beo and Frozen Power. Goffs success is a familiar trait in the family as Finsceal Beo’s Beresford Stakes winner Ol’ Man River sold for €2.85m at the Orby and her Frankel foal set a new Irish record selling for €1.8m last November.

FROM THE CASTLEBRIDGE CONSIGNMENT Frankel’s colt out of a granddaughter of the Matron Stakes winner Dazzling Park is another lot that stems from a pedigree well proven with Galileo. Out of Drifting, a Sadler’s Wells half-sister to Phoenix Stakes Alfred Nobel, the Castlebridge consigned colt stems from the Lodge Park family of Park Express, who is the dam of Galileo’s Derby winner New Approach.

FROM CAMAS PARK STUD Frankel’s filly out of Danehill Dancer Listed winner Rose Bonheur will have plenty of speed in her pedigree. Rose Bonheur, who was best over six-furlongs when winning the Belgrave Stakes is out of Marju Moyglare Stud Stakes runner-up Red Feather from the family of Miss Oceana, Champion two-year-old filly in U.S.A in 1983.

With a Galileo filly out of the Australian Group 3 winning own-sister to Champion two-year-old old colt Holy Roman

Emperor, consigned by Barronstown Stud, Europe’s current Champion sire looks set for another very strong sale. Galileo’s son Teofilo is proving to be top-class sire with over 40 stakes winners to his name. Barouche Stud offers a filly out of a full-sister to Wood Memorial Stakes winner Tapit, while Jim Bolger’s Redmondstown Stud has a filly out of a half-sister to Teofilo’s Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes winner Light Heavy. Teofilo also has three well-bred lots out of half-sisters to Classic winners with colts out of half-sisters to the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Elusive Wave and 2,000 Guineas winner Spinning World, who is already the dam of the Groupplaced One Chance, while Rathbarry offers a filly out of the Listed-placed Musical Bar, a half-sister to Finsceal Beo. Another highly regarded lot to come from Redmondstown Stud will be the own-brother to four-time Group 1 winner Dawn Approach, pictured left, who is one of seven lots by Darley’s Derby winner New Approach. Another son of Galileo with his first yearling crop is Roderic O’Connor, who has a half-sister to the May Hill Stakes winner Agnes Stewart, while Rip van Winkle has a filly first foal out of the Dansili half-sister to Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Astronomer Royal.

FIRST CROP SIRES Next season’s first crop sires are well represented too with no fewer than 19 sires with lots catalogued. Flying Childers Stakes winner Sir Prancealot also has an eye-catching draft that includes a filly out of Danetime Out, the dam of both the Champion two-year-old and recent Lennox Stakes winner Toormore and last season’s Champagne Stakes winner Estidhkaar. Sea The Stars and Galileo’s brother, Born To Sea is sure to be popular and has a draft of 16, which includes a half-brother to the Hungerford Stakes winner Gregorian as well as a half-sister to Group 1 performer Reinterval to be consigned by the Irish National Stud. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Nathaniel is another with first crop yearlings that are sure to be in great demand. These include a half-sister to the Challenge Stakes winner Here Comes When and a colt out of a half-sister to Group 3 winner Brazilian Bride, from the family of Henrythenavigator. Casamento, winner of the Racing Post Trophy, looks to have a smart draft with half-brothers to Listed winner Be Ready and German Group 2 winner Fight Club. Kyllachy’s Dragon Pulse also has a strong first draft of yearlings. The Futurity Stakes winner has a half-sister to the Norfolk Stakes winner Masta Plasta, which is also the immediate family of Tiggy Wiggy, as well as three-parts sisters to Listed winners Pausanias and Seeharn.

Dalakhani, who stood alongside the late Azamour and is enjoying a good year, is also solely represented with a half-sister to Group 3 winner Chintz, who is from the family of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Solemia. Last season’s new boys Canford Cliffs and Zoffany are justifying their support in the sales ring 12 months ago to dominate the first crop sires table. Canford Cliffs’ 13 yearlings includes a half-sister to Group 3 winner Love Intrigue, while Zoffany has two more than his stud-mate which includes a half-brother to Listed winner Table Rock. s you approach Navan, approximately 30 minutes north-west of Dublin, a glade of trees on your left conceals the entrance to an attractive avenue. Bordered by a huge paddock sweeping down to the River Boyne it leads into a 200 acre farm that ranks among the world’s most successful thoroughbred nurseries. There is something of a Miss Marple about Miss Patricia O’Kelly. Rather like Agatha Christie’s famous sleuth, she stands shorter than most people but, in terms of achievement, she is head and shoulders above all but the very best. She will not be on Twitter at the Orby Sale, nor busy checking her e-mails with a furrowed brow. She will not demand attention nor hustle buyers. She will simply do what she has done for longer than most yearling buyers have been alive - offer another draft of Kilcarn Stud yearlings, with which she has been involved for over seventy years. Success in the thoroughbred industry is hard to come by and, when it does arrive, often provokes incorrect assumptions from those on the sidelines. This particular journey to Classic winners and record priced yearlings has not been without its fair share of hardship and personal sacrifice.

INTERVIEW

Kilcarn Stud was purchased by Major Ned O’Kelly during the Second World War. He had not actually seen the farm but commissioned his brother to buy it on his behalf. “My uncle Major John O’Kelly came on a pony and trap from where he lived, at Ballygoran Stud in Maynooth to buy the farm as my father was still away in Melton Mowbray where he was second in command in the RAVC (Royal Army Veterinary Corps). He was born in Monkstown, Co. Dublin and did veterinary at Trinity College. He joined the Royal Flying Corps first and then the RAVC. In the end an old injury from a flying accident resulted in his being invalided out of the army.” Major O’Kelly returned to Ireland with his wife and daughter and set up stud in 1943. Despite attending a boarding

that we bought out of Spicer’s Bakery and we would lead a mare to be covered at Kelly’s, the other side of Navan. It took a long time. Extraordinary when you think about it now.” Major O’Kelly brought one mare back with him from England but then set about building up a small broodmare band. To this day the stud has no more than a dozen mares. “The first good horse that we bred was Big Dipper. He was Champion two-yearold in 1950. That was the year that my mother died so it did something to cheer us up. The following year we bred the Sussex Stakes winner Le Sage, who was ridden by Gordon Richards.” At this point in the discussion Pat produces a real gem. It is the Kilcarn Stud Book which features a double page entry for every mare since the start. On the left

school near London which was evacuated to Wales during the war, Miss O’Kelly (better known as Pat) would travel home for school holidays and developed a love of horses, dogs and the outdoor life that remains undiminished. “I was always doing something outdoors. I liked to garden which I learned from my mother and I must have a dog and a cat as well as my horses.” When Pat was just eighteen and might have hoped to see more of the world and broaden her horizons, the untimely death of her mother Marjorie put an end to any such possibilities. She was needed at home and it cannot always have been easy in rural Ireland for an only child who had spent her early years and schooling in England. “You’ve got to remember that there was not really any petrol then so if we wanted to go somewhere we used a horse or a bicycle. I remember that in those days Daddy and I would go in a trap with a cob

hand page is the pedigree lineage written out in longhand, as well as the source and purchase price for any addition that was not homebred. There is also a sale record or death notice for each mare as well as some personal comments. The right hand page lists every progeny of the mare opposite, showing sire, name, race record and any other relevant information. In 1966 the stud enjoyed its first Classic winner Sodium. He finished fourth behind Charlottown in the Epsom Derby but reversed the form to win both the Irish Derby and the St Leger at Doncaster. However this was still some time before the bloodstock market had really come alive and it would take another 20 years and another Classic success before Kilcarn Stud would reap any major commercial rewards. The catalyst for that success was a purchase on Tuesday December 4th 1973 at Tattersalls, when a filly foal by Welsh Pageant was sold by Newsells Stud

Company for 11,000 guineas to Kilcarn Stud. The foal was named Welsh Flame and went on to win 4 races for Bruce Hobbs before becoming a foundation mare of the highest quality. Like all breeders Major O’Kelly had his own preferences when it came to buying mares. “He didn’t mind them being smallish, he would prefer a quality mare than a big giant of a mare. I think he had a good eye for a horse.” He also recognised how a good sales preparation would make life easier for Kilcarn bred horses and give them a small head-start in their racing careers. “He always did this breaking of them before he sold them; He saw a lot of horses at the races with their necks stretched against the bit not being able to be ridden properly - of course they had hard mouths. He thought that if a jockey could ride the horse and console it and pace it, it would be a help, and then the trainer would be pleased with it, wouldn’t he? Once I had one down beside the River Boyne in the rushes and a bird flew up and the horse left me, went galloping up the middle of the field. My father was out with the dogs watching what was going on and the horse was galloping with the two reins going out behind - luckily straight and not around one of his legs or something. He went up to my father who gathered up all the reins and I came puffing up the hill and I knew I was going to be in trouble so I said, ‘Daddy, if he leaves the starting stalls as quick as he leaves me he is going to win lots of races’ (and he was a good horse), so I got a big grin, the reins were all wrapped up and given back to me.” The Stud made further progress as a result of Pat buying a filly foal in 1978 at Goffs for just 1,000 guineas. “She was by Pitskelly, who we had also bred, and she was the first animal I actually bought for myself. I kept saying to my Father “No you bid, I don’t want to bid” and he replied “Well if you want her, you are going to have to bid because I am not going to buy her”. So I did buy her and we called her Pitmarie.” Pitmarie turned out to be a Group 1 placed Stakes winner whose offspring

included Marouble, the Norfolk Stakes winner and Kitza, runner-up in both the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Irish Oaks. She was trained by the then up-and-coming Jim Bolger whose role in the Kilcarn story was to become more significant. A second filly was also on her way to him. “Welsh Flame had a yearling by Artaius. She was unable to go the sales as a yearling in 1981 so she went into training with Jim Bolger and we named her Flame of Tara. She did what she needed to do and won the 1983 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. That was very exciting.” In 1997 the foals included an Ela-ManaMou colt out of Finlandia (who had been bought for 90,000 guineas at Goffs). This was Snurge, who won the 1990 St Leger

as a maiden followed by an illuminating career as an older horse which included Group 1 wins in Italy and Canada. On his retirement he was the highest earning racehorse in European history. However he was to be overshadowed by another Kilcarn foal of 1987. Flame Of Tara’s second foal was a daughter of Sadler’s Wells, Salsabil. She won five Group 1 races including the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Oaks at Epsom and

then the Irish Derby, the first filly to do so in ninety years. She had already established her Classic credentials when her half-brother by Last Tycoon was offered at the 1989 Cartier Million Sale. Unsurprisingly, he was also bought by Sheikh Hamdan and, named Marju, was runner up to Generous in the Derby before dropping back to a mile and winning the St James Palace at Royal Ascot. The stud retained the next filly, Danse Royale who was trained by Michael Grassick to win the Group 3 Prix de Psyche at Deauville under Lester Piggott. Demand for stock from the “Flame” family soared and, in consultation with the late Robert Griffin of Goffs, Kilcarn

established itself as the leading yearling vendor on many subsequent occasions with several seven figure yearlings. As well as sitting on the Goffs board, Miss O’Kelly served for several years as a Director of the Irish National Stud. There she was involved in the acquisition of many good broodmares as well as Invincible Spirit, who, like both Salsabil and Marju, was trained by John Dunlop. “I wouldn’t consider myself a judge of a stallion but I kept a share so I must have approved. Sitting on those boards broadened my outlook, a little bit anyway.” Ironically a reputation for high priced yearlings can work against a farm with

some buyers imagining that horse will be out of reach financially. Kilcarn yearlings are in fact as likely as any to “slip through the net” with reserves often low. Just before this article was written one of the 2014 Goffs draft won her Maiden in England. She was bought last year for just €13,000. A more extreme example came in 2009 when a filly by Holy Roman Emperor made €52,000 - not expensive for a most attractive individual out of a young stakeswinning mare. Two years later Banimpire was back at Goffs as the winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, when she made €2.3 million! The man who saw that opportunity was fittingly the same man who had trained Flame Of Tara over 25 years before. There is another yearling by Holy Roman Emperor in the Kilcarn Stud draft at Goffs this year, along with yearlings by Galileo, Invincible Spirit, Ravens Pass, Acclamation and Mastercraftsman.

They will be prepared and presented by Stud Groom Stuart Lanney whose father Seamus spent a lifetime working at Kilcarn before retiring a few years ago. He will be assisted by Nuala Lynch, a graduate of the Irish National Stud, ‘Junior’ Ferreira and Paddy Plunkett. Not far away will be Miss O’Kelly herself. “I don’t know lots of the buyers nowadays and some I might only know by sight. And

lots of them don’t know me of course. I would be interested to know who’s who, I think they are sometimes afraid to talk to me but I am rather reserved by nature so it is quite difficult to introduce myself. I hope that some of them might come and say hello to me.” After a career that reaches back to the Coventry Stakes winner of 1950 that does not seem unreasonable.

A ROSÉ GLOW Château Léoube’s [Layoob] carefully cultivated vineyards combine traditional and modern techniques to produce some of the most brilliant examples of organic Provençal Rosé.

A QUINTESSENTIAL FRENCH VINEYARD With a romantic past and the

56

Goffs

promise of a loving and caring future, Léoube estate spreads out over four kilometres of coastline and covers an entire 560 hectares (65h of vines), in one of the most beautiful protected sites in Europe, on the shore of the Mediterranean: the Bénat peninsula close to St Tropez. It is an absolutely unique and breathtaking setting!

ORGANIC VITICULTURE Léoube’s winemaker, Romain Ott, is a firm believer in environmentally friendly viticulture and winemaking. Ott understands precisely how to integrate traditional and modern growing methods, in line with lunar and seasonal cycles. In the vineyard, Ott rejects the use of weed killers, pesticides and fertilizer. Grapes are harvested by hand maintaining low yields. In the cellar, there are no or very low levels of sulfites added and the wines are certified organic. With an eye on the past and an eye on the future, the planning of the vineyard

is critical to its ongoing success. “We’re also watching closely to keep the average vineyard age at 20 to 25 years. We’re always thinking about the estate’s future and the next generations in what we’re doing now,” Leoube’s head of sales Jerome Pernot stresses.

THE BEST ROSÉ(S) IN THE WORLD The new cellar was designed to maximize gravity to keep the grapes intact right up until crushing and pressing. Pressing takes over two hours at low pressure to get clear and clean juice, which then spends between 12 and 48 hours in a tank, at low temperature, before starting its fermentation cycle. The aim is to extract the best flavour from the grapes. To make more stable wines, the alcoholic fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation creating rounder and more characterful wines. Clarification follows. All processes are done naturally. The aim is to produce wines that all of your senses will enjoy.

ROSÉ DE LÉOUBE 2014 GrenacheCinsault, is an elegant rosé that grows in confidence as each mouthful is savoured. The

delicate aromas reveal scents of honey and soft red fruits, both of which emerge as the wine warms in the mouth. There is an unmistakable scent of mint, evoking the herbs that grow wild around the vineyards. Even the nearby sea seems to have left its mark in the appealing, lightly salty finish. This is a very rounded wine, notable for its harmony, freshness and sheer drinkability. Assured, understated and refined, a highly accomplished Provence Rosé.

SECRET DE LÉOUBE 2014 (OLD VINES) THE BLEND OF Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon makes a distinctly pale wine with the most delicate pear aromas. Secret is assured and effortless, remarkable for its texture and sensation in the mouth. Made from lower yields, it is delicately scented, cool and yet under-laid with the flavour of its Provençal origins – herbs, fennel and a touch of aniseed. The result is a well balanced, fresh drink with a hint of white pepper, which balances the fruit on the palate. Secret is very drinkable on its own and supremely well matched to Provençal food, Asian dishes and white meat.

The O’Callaghans are one of racing’s dynastic families whose high-class horses, bred or reared at Yeomanstown Stud, include the Group One winners Dark Angel and the legendary four-time Irish St Leger hero Vinnie Roe, as well as a host of others, writes Lissa Oliver. Photographs by Caroline Norris

eomanstown and Morristown Lattin Studs, a stone’s throw from Goffs at Naas, are set on 600 acres of the finest Kildare pasture on the tranquil banks of the River Liffey, the perfect nursery for the high-class horses produced there. Established in 1923 by the LevinsMoore family, Yeomanstown Stud was purchased in 1981 by a family who match its illustrious history and have since added to a roll of honour that had included Tudor Minstrel and M’Lolshan. Gay and Annette O’Callaghan made an immediate impact on the stud’s fortunes and have established a dynasty respected throughout the world – both human and equine. They are now leading breeders in Europe with a track record proven by percentage of winners to runners and sons Guy and Peter are running equallysuccessful farms of their own in Kentucky and here in Ireland, while their brothers David and Robert are an integral part of the home team at Yeomanstown. “We were always involved,” David says. “It was a choice – we weren’t expected to be, or forced to come home and be part of the family business. But when you grow up here, it’s part of life. I’ve been back home for 15 years and Robert is here as well. Guy and Peter have their own farms, but we’re all involved with each other, there’s no rivalry and we’re always ready to help each other.” Eight years after taking over Yeomanstown, Gay made the decision to stand stallions and the adjoining Morristown Lattin, the base for the stallions, has gained a reputation for success with the type of sires forever popular in the sales ring. Common Grounds set the bar, becoming one of Europe’s most prolific sires of two-yearolds, Gr1 Prix Morny winner, Bad As I Wanna Be, among those bred by the O’Callaghans. He was succeeded by the ill-fated Pips Pride, a major loss to the industry after just three crops, which included another Yeomanstown Gr1 winner, Pipalong. Currently Approve, Camacho and Dark Angel stand at Morristown Lattin and the latter, also bred by the O’Callaghans, is carrying all before him. At the time of writing, Dark Angel has sired 42 Stakes performers, including 11 Group winners and 10 Listed winners, the best of which is undoubtedly the champion sprinter Lethal Force, from his all-conquering first crop. “We could talk all day about him,” David rightly says. “He has been a success story from the start. We bred him, we brought him back here and he has climbed up the ranks every year and is the leading two-year-old sire this year. “He’s a good looking horse and he breeds a good looking horse. They all have a lot of scope and keep

improving. They’re good as two-year-olds, better as three-year-olds and better again as four-year-olds.” Yeomanstown Stud, however, remains the base for the commercial business of selling yearlings and unsurprisingly the O’Callaghans are pretty good at that side of things, too! The produce from a band of 50 brood mares at Yeomanstown is supplemented with astute pin-hooks to comprise a formidable consignment of around 60 yearlings each season. David describes it as “a healthy mix of 50:50 or

The Dynasty GRANGEMORE STUD, GUY O’CALLAGHAN Guy is the latest family member to establish his own bloodstock operation, based at Pollardstown in Co Kildare. Champions bred at Grangemore Stud include multiple Gr1 and Classic winner Scorpion and Gayle Gal (Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes). Under Guy’s watch the recent track record breaker Birchwood won the Gr2 Superlative Stakes. WOODS EDGE FARM, PETER O’CALLAGHAN Peter took over the Kentucky farm in 2001 and has since produced and consigned multiple Group winners and sales toppers, including many seven-figure yearlings and performers such as Eskendereya (Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes, Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes), Street Boss (Gr1 Bing Crosby Handicap, Gr1 Triple Bend Handicap) and Littlepricessemma, dam of Triple Crown hero American Pharoah. Tarfah, the dam of Camelot, was also bred on the farm.

60:40” when it comes to homebreds and pin-hooks heading to the sales. “It’s nice to have both,” he says. “The pinhooks supplement the breeding side. We try to buy a few more nice horses to take to the sales as yearlings to diversify the range of stallions and families we have on offer.” This policy has reaped dividends, the list of high-class horses bred or reared at Yeomanstown including the Group One winners Dark Angel, of course (Middle Park Stakes), and the legendary fourtime Irish St Leger hero Vinnie Roe, also

runner-up in the Melbourne Cup, as well as Garswood (Prix Maurice de Gheest), Passion For Gold (Criterium de SaintCloud), Dim Sum (Chairman’s Sprint Prize), Bad As I Wanna Be (Prix Morny), Pipalong (Haydock Sprint Cup), Earl Of Barking (Hollywood Turf Handicap) and Champion Irish two-year-olds Definite Article (National Stakes) and Capricciosa (Moyglare Stakes, Cheveley Park Stakes). “We follow them all and we’ve had a good year on the track this year,” David points out. “Endless Drama was second in the Irish 2000 Guineas, Log Out Island is performing well in the best company, Easton Angel was second in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, Pearl Secret won the Temple Stakes and Mecca’s Angel is one of the best sprint fillies. It’s been a really good year. Any time we sell a Group winner it’s a very good day and if we bred it, it’s better again.” Having such a good choice of stallions on their own doorstep is another benefit, given that when many breeders are sitting down to plan matings, the O’Callaghans are still busy at the sales. “We don’t send that many away, we divide most of the mares between our own stallions,” David says. “In Acclamation’s first season we sent him three mares and we got Dark Angel from that! This year we’ve used Charm Spirit and Showcasing, but predominately the mares stay at home.” Selecting the most suitable sale for the yearlings bred at Yeomanstown is another pivotal part of the conundrum. “Each draft has a number of very good horses in it, you need to keep the footfall coming to your door at every sale,” David explains. “We look at which horses will be ready for a sale and we’ve a very strong draft of 14 going to the Orby this year.” He picks out a full-brother to the July Stakes winner Alhebayeb (Dark Angel ex Miss Indigo) as one of the nice colts among the Orby lots. “We’ve some very good colts including a nice Poet’s Voice and some very good Dark Angel fillies. We’ve a nice mix of pin-hooks, homebreds and a good mix of sires.” As purchasers gather at Goffs and dream of replicating the past successes of horses consigned by Yeomanstown, the O’Callaghans are also looking to the future. “We’re always trying to improve our mares and stallions, to produce better horses and improve trading. We just want to continue trying to breed and sell good horses,” David concludes.

Detecting an equine health issue can often involve complex, time-consuming and costly techniques. Early detection of inflammation can provide better insight into the horse’s health whilst allowing for prompt commencement of treatment. Plusvital EquiChek SAA provides a key to using the information held in one of the most vital components of your horse’s body - its blood, giving an indication of the horse’s health. This easy to use, real time test quickly measures the concentration of Serum Amyloid A in an equine whole blood sample, providing a result in approximately five minutes. Serum amyloid A is an acute-phase protein that rises in response to a challenge to the immune system. SAA is normally present at very low concentrations in the healthy horse, however, during infection or systemic inflammation the concentration of SAA rises dramatically. SAA is a very sensitive indicator of acute inflammation and it quickly returns to normal once an issue is resolved, therefore, measuring SAA levels in the horse’s blood provides a useful diagnostic aid to equine veterinarians, trainers and owners alike.

INFLAMMATION DETECTION When it comes to the health of the horse, quick information is key to timely, effective treatment. Many pathologies of the horse result in a rise in the level of SAA, further highlighting its potential as a biomarker. Monitoring SAA can be useful for: n Breeding soundness checks, e.g. placentitis n Pre-competition screening n Post-surgical monitoring n Monitoring response to antibiotic treatment regimes n Monitoring the health status of horses during/after transport and general screening for infection and inflammation n Monitoring foal health, e.g. R.equi infections

EquiChek SAA provides immediate, semi-quantitative results, which empower the vet and trainer when managing the health and performance of the horse. Since 1975, Plusvital have supplied serious competitors in both the thoroughbred and sport horse industries with high quality equine nutraceuticals and our products continue to be used consistently and successfully across the world. Our focus today follows that tradition and ensures that Plusvital continues to be synonymous with sciencebased equine performance products.

CHAMPIONS WEEKEND

Permanent FIXTURE Irish Champions Weekend a new dual destination date in the flat calendar launched last year, has become a firm favourite with racegoers, writes Aisling Crowe.

rish Champions Weekend was the big racing success story of 2014. Two fantastic days at Leopardstown and The Curragh, boasting five Group 1 races in front of a 24,000-strong crowd, showcased Ireland as a centre of excellence for horse racing, breeding and hospitality. Memorable wins for UK raiders The Grey Gatsby

in the QIPCO Champion Stakes and Classic success for Brown Panther in the Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger were among the highlights of the racecourse action. Goffs kicked off the weekend with flair, staging the first Champions Sale in the parade ring before racing at Leopardstown. The boutique horses-intraining sale specialists offered 11 horses with form and a strong turnout from

some of bloodstock’s biggest names resulted in a top price of €470,000 and the highest average ever at an Irish bloodstock auction. The sale proved to be a big attraction for novice and seasoned racegoers alike and added a great sense of theatre to the occasion. The catalogue for the 2015 Goffs Champions Sale, held in association with Brown Thomas, is available to view online at goffs.com Goffs Orby

CHAMPIONS WEEKEND

UNIQUE, BRILLIANT AND BIZZARE We ask some of those closest to the action what Champions Weekend meant to them ... JONATHAN MULLIN

64

Goffs

BRIAN KAVANAGH, CEO HORSE RACING IRELAND “Irish Champions Weekend has been the single most important development in Irish flat racing in recent years. It has immediately caught the imagination of the racing world. In its first year it was associated with very high quality horses with Gleneagles (pictured right), The Grey Gatsby and Brown Panther amongst its Group 1 winners. But it isn’t about the racing alone. The Goffs Champions Sale is an integral part of the fixture, the Thoroughbred Trail on Sunday morning has attracted huge attention and Longines sponsorship of the entire weekend reflects the international global interest in the meeting.”

PAT KEOGH,

IRISH EDITOR OF THE RACING POST “Most sales happen midweek while nurses are nursing and teachers are teaching. The sales ring and the excitement and drama that it brings is typically an alien concept to most people, even ordinary racegoers. It is something that happens on another distant planet. And that is what was so special about the Goffs Champion Sale. You had people who had been racing all their lives but had never before been up close to a horse sale and were suddenly enthralled by what was going on before their eyes. There they were, on the steps of Leopardstown’s parade ring, standing shoulder to shoulder with genuine millionaires as they bid for the prize horseflesh on show. It was unique, brilliant and bizarre.”

CHIEF EXECUTIVE LEOPARDSTOWN RACECOURSE “Goffs is an innovator in bloodstock sales ring set-ups. We loved the London Sale before Royal Ascot and could see the success of linking to a race meeting so when Goffs wanted to include a sale at the Irish Champions’ Weekend it felt the perfect fit. Having a sale before racing created a wonderful atmosphere around the racecourse. A lot of our racing regulars would never have experienced a sale before and exposure to a bloodstock auction is an important part of enticing new owners and new people into the sport. It plants a seed. People can get a peek at how the industry works in one afternoon. They can witness horses being bought and sold and then watch those athletes win and see first-hand the joy that that brings to owners. With an increase in prize money to €1.1m Irish Champions Weekend is fast becoming an essential international meeting, and partnering with Longines is another step in ensuring that this weekend is marked boldly into the diaries of every blue chip owner, trainer and jockey. ”

MANAGER OF THE CURRAGH RACECOURSE “The victory of Brown Panther in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh was a real highlight of Champions Weekend. Owner Michael Owen’s public profile got us enormous coverage and it was a significant success for him too. We enjoyed a marvellous Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes last year too but it was disappointing that Gleneagles was not the Champion two-year-old given what he achieved afterwards. Almost 400 people followed the Thoroughbred Trail, which offered racing fans the chance to go “back stage” and experience what happens behind-the-scenes in the industry’s racing yards, veterinary hospitals and stud farms. It was hugely popular and we’re hoping it will be even bigger this year. The two-track idea worked very well and allowed racing fans to base themselves in either Kildare or Leopardstown and travel between the venues. While there is a certain crossover at both meetings each has its own distinct crowd. At the Curragh we got more of the racing industry and country crowds whereas there was more of a social element to the Leopardstown day.”

DEBBIE MOUNTAIN, TRAINER, QATAR

“Champions Weekend is one of the first meetings I wrote into my calendar this year, the racing over the weekend included many of the best horses-in- training. It’s simply a great day to go racing. We purchased what is now one of the leading horses in Qatar, Ponfeigh, at the auction before racing so be sure to come early to watch all the action that takes place at the sale.”

CLIPPER LOGISTICS, SPONSOR “The amazing atmosphere on the day was something that can only be generated by top class horses racing in a wonderful setting in front of a massive crowd. Race after race grabbed the public’s interest to a degree rarely seen and Clipper Logistics couldn’t have been happier with our involvement.”

ROBERT HALL, PRESENTER, RTÉ RACING “It was the concentration of quality that made the weekend such an enormous success last year. Ireland needed a showpiece meeting and this weekend in September is fast becoming that. It is the first in a series of high profile international dates in the autumn season; the Arc weekend in France follows it, then Champions’ Day at Ascot and the Breeders’ Cup meeting before racing then moves to Hong Kong and Japan.”

WILLIE MCCREERY, TRAINER OF FIESOLANA, WINNER OF G1 COOLMORE MATRON STAKES “Champions Weekend is very important to Irish racing because it puts us firmly on the world map, at a specific point in the calendar. Horses from all over Europe competed and there was a good spread of winners during the weekend. To have a Group 1 winner was amazing and for our first one to happen on Irish Champions’ Weekend was extra special. We were very lucky to have the mare and we were grateful to Maria Niarchos and Alan Cooper for keeping her in training with us. As well as having a Group 1 winner, I thought the Thoroughbred Trail was a brilliant idea and very important for yards on the Curragh. People got the opportunity to see what goes on in those racing yards and we are delighted to be taking part again this year.”

hether you require a look for a day at the races, an entire wardrobe make-over or simply some great wearable items for every day, at Brown Thomas we tailor every personal shopping appointment to the individual’s needs”, says CAROLINE HANRATTY, Head of Private and Personal Shopping at Brown Thomas. “We want our customers to think of the Personal Shopping Service as a walk-in wardrobe. The complimentary service offered by the luxury fashion and lifestyle store is available to all customers by appointment with many clients sending through photographs in advance to give us a sense of their typical style, favourite pieces, or looks that they admire so we can better build a profile in advance of meeting them. We find the biggest challenge people have is time. They just don’t always have time in their busy lives to spend deciding their outfits so we take that stress away from them. Our priority is that the outfit or wardrobe works for the individual and for their lifestyle. We have organised home visits on occasion, have an excellent tailoring service and can, on request, also organise home delivery”.

Make it personal At Brown Thomas the team of personal shoppers enjoy building relationships with their clients over each season, enabling them to tailor a fabulous wardrobe that functions brilliantly for the individual. The personal shopping service is complimentary and is also available as a go-to solution for beauty products or gifts for a loved one.

Sales pitch perfect A DAY AT THE SALES requires a smart look that will take you from the parade ring to the stable yards, says Caroline Hanratty. “Layer your clothes to ensure you are well-equipped for the elements outdoors and can be comfortable when you venture inside. A check style by Sportmax in a warming wool cashmere mix comes with a cowl-like hood that is both elegant and practical. style by Irish designer Lucy Nagle. A jegging, a jean-style legging, is more form fitting and flattering than the casual style of traditional denims. As you will spend much of the day on your feet, being well-shod is essential. Caroline Hanratty suggests either a knee-length flat boot or a tan block heel ankle boot. A bucket-size bag, such as the Papier Zip A4 by Balenciaga, offers low key luxe and is big enough to take your iPad and all other Orby catalogue essentials.

“WHEN DRESSING FOR THE RACES the key consideration is that your look is weather-appropriate. With four seasons often raining down in a single day this can present a challenge”, says Caroline Hanratty. Sophisticated chic is always a winning look, and a gorgeous day dress will underpin this idea. Escada has some beautiful options that have forgiving full-length sleeves and a flattering below-the-knee hem. You want your bag to add to your ensemble, so favour a hands-free design. A Valentino clutch tucked under the arm will leave you free to raise a glass to the winner. Statement sunglasses will hide any pre-race jitters while a large wool scarf, such as the printed styles by Alexander McQueen, will keep evening chills at bay. A grey felt hat - a reworking of the classic top hat by Stella McCartney, quite literally doffs a cap at tradition. In terms of shoes, the block heel is ontrend this season and is ideal for racing around the stands. The stiletto, while always elegant, can be impractical when exposed to the outdoor elements.

Brown Thomas Menswear Personal Shopper, JEFF THOMPSON sums up his style philosophy with the following quote by Henry Ward Beecher. “Good clothes and manners do not make the man, but they greatly approve his appearance”. Jeff has some key pointers to follow in terms of the racing wardrobe, “I would suggest investing in a trench coat as a versatile staple piece to have in the wardrobe”. Jeff has dressed owners and trainers for the Royal Enclosure at Ascot and for the Galway Races and suggests bespoke details to add a signature style. Some of his clients have had their racing colours stitched into the lining of a jacket. Others prefer to opt for a completely bespoke suit by Gieves & Hawkes. In terms of offthe-peg options Tom Ford is the trophy brand to sport for its hand-stitched finishes and floating wool horsehair panels that smooth and disguise. All suits can be tailored to fit”.

SOCK ‘EM In socks there are two schools of thought, the the fun and the formal. Happy Sock will add personality to your look. For formal wear a classic silk option by Dore is the way to go.

“FOR THE ORBY SALE nothing beats the Eton shirt as a foundation garment”, comments Jeff Thompson. “It washes really well and when travelling, it doesn’t take a lot of ironing to condition it. The collar and cuffs of this Swedish shirt come with a fiveyear warranty so if they fray the brand will replace them. The slim fit is perfect for the jockey-turned-trainer while the contemporary fit is more suited to a larger physique”. A padded jacket by Brunello Cucinelli is a savvy Orby Sale day wear. Its wool and duck down design has a detachable hood and storm detailing that also make it perfect for stable visits. It comes with an inside Paul Smith pocket big enough to accommodate Cristo the Orby catalogue. The classic 100 Brogues, per cent waterproof Crombie is €360 another option. Choose midnight blue if you’re dark haired. Blonde or Grenson grey haired men should try it in the Dylan Wing Cap Oxford Shoes, Prussian blue. Cucinelli also does a €270 classic jean but younger owners and breeders will prefer the Japanese style, naturally-dyed, jean by Jacob Cohen which looks low-key but has silver plated hardware and button fly. A smart Grenson boot, either a Chelsea or perforated wing cap style completes this look.

Picnic Pedigree

protocol

When it comes to posh picnicking Royal Ascot is top of its class. It turns an event that takes place in a car park into the social highlight of the year. What makes it work? Think horsey not hipster say those in the know. 74

Goffs

RACECOURSE RULES Racegoers have been picnicking at Royal Ascot since forever. Jim Wordsworth, MD of Anglo Hibernian Bloodstock Insurance, started the tradition 30 years ago when he introduced a “bring-your-own” picnic first held the car park of the Institute of Chartered Surveyors, just up the road from the racecourse. “We were all allotted things to bring”, says Fiona Ferguson who together with her husband John Ferguson co-host an Ascot picnic with Jim and Camilla Wordsworth. “Someone would bring a delicious chocolate cake, another a fruit platter. My job was to bring the crisps.” It became the thing to do, to drop by the Wordsworths, before and after the races and when it moved to the owners and trainers car park the Fergusons began to co-host the event with more friends from racing dropping by every year. “We now have three to five hundred people calling and as it became more of a big deal we hired caterers to do the food. Driver Cliff Wigham’s job is to get here early to set up with Dave, the car park man in charge of holding us a space.” There’s not enough room for tables and chairs so everybody stands, Ferguson explains. The food is really served to soak up all the Champagne, rose, white wine and elderflower. “The rule is to serve nothing that will squirt onto an Ascot dress and ruin someone’s day. Tea is served after the last race although not tea to drink. Red wine is only served in the evening. The picnic finishes when the drink finishes, about 9.30pm”. How can one attend? “It’s an invite only affair with guests invited by email”. Do you give out wristbands like at a music festival? “God no!”

WHAT TO SERVE A picnic is no different to hosting a dinner party, but outside, so emulate what you do inside, outdoors, is the advice of Andrew Cavanna buyer at Fortnum and Mason, purveyors of picnics with pedigree and sponsors of Goffs London Sale. He loves simple food done well; “dry cured ham, boiled eggs – quail or hen served with celery salt, potted shrimp, then cheese and crackers washed down by craft ales.” Just-picked local strawberries are another essential ingredient. Pack foods that travel well and that are whole or self contained, he advises. “Pies, boiled eggs and whole fruits, such as apricots, peaches or cherries or preserved in some way, either salted, dried, brined or cured. Mason jars and Kilner jars are great picnic vessels with lids. So is a large picnic basket.” Waterproof backed blankets and large umbrellas that can act as a windbreak are other essentials.

75

Goffs

SET THE SCENE Sophie Lillingston, MD of Lillingstons Event Management, has catered numerous picnics in picturesque locations, one on the shore of a loch in Scotland where she served oysters on the half shell to start, followed by a barbecue on the beach where every guest’s chair had a picnic blanket and a shoreside pebble as a place setting. The table was decked with bracken and ferns to add atmosphere. On a Tuscan hillside guests stumbled upon a table groaning with tomato and basil plants and an array of olive oils. Each guest was served a ball of mozzarella ball and picked the tomatoes and basil to accompany it seasoning it with the oil of their choice. At a picnic lunch in Montana after a morning’s ride out hog roast was dished up with colourful roast vegetable salads and the best apples she could find crumbled and served on wooden platters accompanied by local beers and cider. At a recovery picnic at West Wycombe a Bloody Mary bar offered a cure to those who had partied hard teamed with made to order omelets cooked on a simple travel gas burner. Goffs Orby

HORSEY NOT HIPSTER Racing tends to be a stand up affair, explains trainer Jamie Osborne, whose annual picnic is an Ascot carpark favourite. “You never know how many people are going to turn up. We try to reserve an area under a tree for some shade. You need the right blend of people, that is, loads of people and a few idiots.” Some chairs are littered around the space for those whose legs get tired. Keep glasses full, is Osborne’s maxim. “We gave up serving champagne in favour of a high quality rose.” His picnic is “horsey not hipster” so don’t expect bite-size fish and chip portions or dirty burgers. He serves magnums of Aix with Scotch quails eggs, homemade sausage rolls, miniature open smoked salmon sandwiches, and dozens of different canapés, all direct from the boot of the car of his cook, Annabel McCalmont, who is originally from Limerick. “I know all the owners and know what they like and carry the Irish idea that you can never have enough food so if you think that 50 will turn up you make enough for 150.”

SHOP FOR IDEAS Set the scene with atmospheric accessories. Cut Waterford crystal stemware, unbreakable melamine platters and punch jugs from Avoca, swish Villeroy and Boch cutlery, available at Kildare Village, with a silver antique sale and pepper cellars from O’Sullivan Antiques are all finishing touches worth investing in. Or you can order a cool wicker basket, complete with goodies, direct from Fortnum and Mason and enjoy a memorable, faff-free al fresco meal.

TOP DRINK TIPS Plenty of booze is a must. Fortnum and Mason recommends at least three-quarters of a bottle of bubbles, red, white or rosé wine, per person. Cassis can turn a mediocre bottle of bubbles into a Kir Royale. Elderflower cordial, mint and sparkling water is a refreshing non alcoholic option. Keep ice cubes in a thermos to prevent them melting. On cold days, Bull shots, consommé with all the spices you put in a Bloody Mary and vodka - will keep guests warm.

Since the reopening in 2009, Waterford Crystal has returned its roots, on The Mall in Waterford city. The fact that it is thriving is a good news story for Ireland and, indeed, for the sporting world, given its connection with so many iconic tournaments.

Ball – a crystal ball which forms a prominent part of a New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in New York, colloquially known as the ball drop. There is huge pride in Waterford Crystal throughout Ireland. No special occasion is complete without a toast raised - using Waterford stemware of course. Waterford Crystal is an internationally recognized brand. People enjoy the unique quality, design and sparkle that our crystal is famous for. Our designs and unique shapes are inspired by art, music, nature, history and Irish heritage. These are some of the reasons why Waterford Crystal is always chosen for that special occasion or unique event”. Visit the Waterford Crystal factory and witness all aspects of production including blowing and cutting of crystal, with our guided tours all year round.

Waterford Crystal is an integral part of irish heritage having been in exsistance since 1783, a proud tradition continued by generations of local people over many years. “We have a manufacturing plant and brand experience in Waterford, where we produce a lot of crystal and give visitors an opportunity to visit the factory and see how we make our beautiful products,” explains David McCoy, Sales & Marketing Director of House of Waterford Crystal. “A lot of work goes into producing a one-off piece including the design and manufacturing. This is something that we have expertise in and it’s the reason why people come to us to design and produce their trophies, unique pieces and awards. “We have an extensive showroom, showcasing everything we make in crystal, including a whole section on golf and sport, which is a major part of our business. The list of famous trophies produced by Waterford Crystal for the sports industry alone is simply staggering. Waterford Crystal also design the pieces for the prestigious Peoples’ Choice Awards as well as the spectacular Times Square

Jaguar has unleashed the new XE, a sports saloon likely to win the brand a whole new customer base. What’s it like to drive? Four of racing’s familiar faces take it off the bridle to find out.

Creature comforts Top trainer GER LYONS is the kind of driver that travels from A to B in a hurry. “I spend a lot of time in the car and find that driving conditions have improved incredibly in the last 20 years. The road structure makes every racetrack easier to get to. Killarney is no longer an overnight stay and I can be in Galway in two hours.” He refuses to stop en route. “I’d have a packet of sweets rather than stop for lunch.” He likes his comforts when on the road. “The interior was second to none and it had plenty of comfort in it. I loved the leather seats and the tech and Bluetooth offer – I was so busy playing with the gadgets on the way home from racing that I missed my exit. When on the road I listen to music. I’m at my happiest on a Friday night driving back from racing in Dundalk listening to Friday Night 80s on Today FM.” Dream Irish road trip? I’d like to travel the Wild Atlantic Way, the coastal drive from Cork to Donegal, and break the habit of a lifetime by stopping for lunch along the way. I’m especially keen to strap a bicycle to the back and do the Greenway, the old railway from Westport to Achill Island in Co Mayo, that is now an off-road cycle path. My father is from Louisburgh, a scenic spot across the bay. But with 30 staff and 100 horses the only time I get to take off is November – I’d get killed on a bike in those conditions!” Gerlyons.ie

Sweet drive SOPHIE CANDY is international marketing executive at Goffs. By the time the rest of us are getting out of bed she has already ridden out on the Curragh for trainer John Oxx. The 6am starts are nothing new to her. Her father is trainer Henry Candy and she has been riding racehorses since she was a child. The only thing that puts a stop to her gallop on the commute are the necessary manouvres to avoid the local sheep that almost outnumber the Curragh’s horse population. She is a fast but careful driver who found this car incredibly responsive. “It sticks to the road and is very comfortable to drive. I didn’t want to give it back! As a sports saloon it’s the perfect size. There is a perception that a Jaguar isn’t a young person’s drive but I was surprised by the XE. It’s a compact car with a lot of power and pricewise it is more accessible than you’d expect. This would be a great car to drive on my long journey back home to the UK. I travel on the ferry so that I can take my two dogs, Oscar and Spot The Dog. It’s a trip I do four or five times a year, to see my family and friends.” If you had to compare the XE to a racehorse which one would it be and why? With its class and speed it really has to be compared to a Group 1 winning sprinter, so on that basis the answer would have to be Kyllachy - a Candy family favourite. Goffs.com

A peach of a ride As advertising, sales and marketing manager at The Irish Field BRENDAN MCARDLE is one of bloodstock’s own. He’s spent decades in the industry and has a contact book that some would kill for. He is one of the most familiar faces in Irish equestrianism. You’ll see him on RTE Television covering The Dublin Horse Show - familiar territory as he is a former winning rider at the RDS aboard Brackley Rose Down - a mare he bred himself. He splits his time between racing and showjumping and his voice is equally well-known. You’ll hear his soft Monaghan brogue in the Parade Ring at The Curragh and Punchestown, reporting

for RTE Radio 1 on racing and showjumping and compering many award ceremonies. He is a workhorse who likes to spend any spare time he has travelling to and from events, in both professional and personal capacities, clocking up an estimated 40,000 miles each year. “A comfortable seat is essential to cover that kind of ground,” he says. Fresh from a return trip to Mill Street, Co Cork via Killarney he was surprised by the fact that didn’t feel tired after the long drive. “It’s a smooth ride. I didn’t notice any bumps on the road. As in racing you need a strong back end for power. The XE has that. It moves well, is flashy looking and has a good front.” What do you listen to when driving? “Mainly radio. I listen to different stations at different times

Driving material Cashmere queen LUCY NAGLE still recalls the first time she wore a sweater in the luxury fabric. She was a teenager and its lightweight warmth kept the cold at bay when she went hunting. The designer grew up on Barronstown Stud where she was surrounded by thoroughbreds and can size up a racehorse in seconds. But she preferred fashion to fast horses and set up her eponymous label two years ago. It was immediately snapped up by Shelly Corkery, fashion director at Brown Thomas. Her knitwear collection, coveted for her cool take on classic styles, is now stocked in all four stores and the group’s two BT2 shops. Travelling to Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick once a month to deliver stock to the stores she likes a car she can open up on the motorway, one with power

and good acceleration. “This is a strong, silent and reactive car with light steering.” The car’s touch screen system was also easy to use – a plus as she also spends most of her driving time making hands-free business calls. The boot and interior is roomy enough to fit her stock and her branded black presentation boxes. Describing her driving style she says: “I’m a destination driver and I like a comfortable car with a supportive seat – the form-hugging seats were great to sit in.” If you could take this car on a road trip anywhere in the world where would it be? “To really open her up it would have to be Route 1, the seaboard route of the Pacific Coast Highway south from San Francisco to golfers nirvana, Pebble Beach. Or I’d revisit the East coast of Australia, a journey I did as a student with two girlfriends. We travelled from Sydney to Queensland. I’d say the expedition would feel completely different in this car.” Lucynagle.com

HOUSE WITH

HORSE SENSE

86

As one of Ireland’s foremost equestrians Lord Patrick Carew learned his skills at Castletown House, a Palladian property steeped in equestrian heritage.

Goffs

P

atrick Carew, the 7th Lord Carew, grew up in Castletown House, Celbridge, County Kildare, a Palladian mansion built in 1722 for Speaker Conolly, William Conolly, the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Considered one of Ireland’s finest big houses Castletown formed the centrepiece of what was then a 550-acre estate. But by the mid 20th Century the house had fallen into disrepair and needed a complete overhaul including a new roof that in the mid-1960s was going to cost upwards of IR£150,000. Faced with such crippling upkeep costs Lord Carew’s parents, Lord William and Lady Sylvia Conolly Carew regrettably had to sell the property in 1966. When sold the house fell into a serious state of disrepair. Desmond Guinness, founder of the Georgian Society, rescued it from dereliction and The Castletown Foundation took over with the running of the house and grounds which are open to the public and operated by the Office Of Public Works. It was in this sylvan setting that Lord Carew, one of Ireland’s foremost equestrians, honed his considerable skills. The man who represented Ireland in two different disciplines; in eventing for 26 years and also show jumping, learned how to ride and to jump on a 12.3 hands high pony called Nick Be Nimble. It was aboard this mount that he took his first real tumble, going over a narrow stile fence, at the RDS Dublin Horse Show, at the age of 10. Undeterred, he went on to become an international rider that rode in two Olympic Games, a former Chef d’Equipe of the Ireland team at the 1976 Olympics, chairman of the Irish National Riders Federation, chairman of the Three-Day Event committee of International Federation of Equestrian Sports (FEI) and president of Eventing Ireland. He honed his talents by riding with his siblings; his sisters Sarah and Diana and brother

Gerald, affectionately known as Bunny for the way he hopped round the place as a child. Every summer, after the Dublin Horse Show, the children travelled to Scotland to see their grandparents, making the crossing by boat – their ponies being an intrinsic part of their carry-on luggage. When Lord Carew was 11 the children competed in the local Scottish Pony Club trials and ended up representing the Scottish area in the finals of the competition which took place at Highgrove, now Prince Charles’ home. The Kildare team came fifth prompting the head of the Pony Club to tell them that if they held a competition in Ireland the winning team could come to the UK and compete. His mother took the suggestion seriously and subsequently set up the Irish Pony Club. Carew used the house and its grounds as his own private arena. When he was Goffs Orby

12 and aboard Polly, a hunter, he tried to jump a hedge, about six feet high and eight feet wide, that bordered Castletown’s front lawn. Conveniently, his parents were on holidays in his mother’s native Scotland. The horse failed to clear the fence, landing the Lord and his mount in the middle of the evergreen shrubbery. It was an “unholy mess” and he had great difficulty getting the animal out. Spare a thought though for the poor hedge that, more than 50 years later, still bears the scar, in the form of a large hole that marks the spot – if you are tall enough to see over the hedge. Castletown House is steeped in equestrian heritage. In 1952 horse trials were held in a field to the front to select an Irish team to compete at the Three Day Event at the Olympic Games in Helsinki. This was followed by All-Ireland Hunter trials and both events ran at the house until it was sold. They were reintroduced by Lord Carew’s daughter, Virginia, in the early 1990s. Schooled in the UK at Elstree Independent Boys Preparatory, Harrow and Sandhurst Lord Carew joined the Royal Horse Guards, The Blues, became an army officer and returned home to Kildare in 1966 to prepare his beloved family home for sale. He moved into a cottage at Mount Armstrong, the new family home that his parents purchased when they sold Castletown, remaining in Kildare, good for its flat well draining land, as Lord Carew puts it. The property was used to keep horses. Married with four children at this point he ran the equestrian side of the new family home living in Donadea House, which was built on Mount Armstrong land in 1967. In 1979 Mount Armstrong was sold and

Castletown is steeped in equestrian heritage. Horse trials were held in a field to the front of the property to select the 1952 Irish team for the Helsinki Olympics.

Lord Carew’s parents moved into a cottage that he built next door to Donadea House where they both lived until they passed away in the 1990s. At this point Donadea House was put up for sale and Lord Carew first met and engaged the services of joint estate agents Richard Brophy and Andrew Nolan, who went on to set up Goffs Country, the country house and land wing of Goffs; and Susan Kirk, who joined Goffs Country earlier this year. Lord Carew retired from the equestrian world in 1984 but by then daughter Virginia had already picked up the reins and was keeping a strong family tradition alive by competing in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Goffs Country has carved a niche for itself as the ‘go to’ agent for selling high end Country and Equestrian properties but it also provides another service that is perhaps less well known. The Acquisitions Department at Goffs Country has a comprehensive knowledge of the market and a considerable network of contacts and can provide access to properties that may never come on the open market. When purchasing a property off the public market it is important to know how best to negotiate the deal and understand and anticipate potential pitfalls. Conducting a comprehensive ‘due diligence’ process is essential when steering a client to a successful conclusion. Andrew Nolan and Richard Brophy have been operating in this specialised area for many years and are highly respected throughout the industry for their depth of knowledge and discretion when it comes to purchasing property away from the public arena. “Many of our clients wish to keep their property business private and we offer this service to facilitate their needs,” Nolan explains. “There are also many others who will prefer the traditional methods of buying and selling property on the open market,” says Andrew. The acquisitions department will not only source property for time poor purchasers but will negotiate and conclude the deal. Bespoke options are also available. This is a growth area of the business as purchasers realise the considerable value and cost savings it represents. goffscountry.com

Winning EXPERTISE Classic winners Covert Love and Make Believe have helped ensure that 2015 has been a vintage year for Hugo Merry and Kilshannig Stud An analysis by the respected Blood-Horse publication MarketWatch found that Hugo Merry returned a strike-rate of 33 per cent stakes winners to horses bought, the joint highest figure for an agency worldwide and the highest of any based in Europe. Since setting up as an independent bloodstock agent in 1986, Merry has consistently demonstrated a knack for securing successful runners. His record also includes stallion prospects who have developed into Champion sires as well as mares who have become G1 producers.

YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR SUCCESS Recent purchases to score at G1 level include Champion and Eclipse Stakes winner David Junior, Audemars Piguet QE II Cup winner Archipenko and Lahaleeb, a 70,000gns yearling who won the E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in Canada. Transatlantic success is a continuous theme. On behalf of Andrew Rosen, Merry secured Icon Project, the 13 1/2 length winner of the G1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga, the G1-placed First Passage and G1 producer Heat Lightning, subsequently dam of the G1-placed Theyskens’theory. Others subsequent G1 producers bought by Merry include Cumbres (200,000gns purchase), dam of Irish 1,000

Guineas winner Again, Sunshower (€10,000), dam of top miler Excelebration, Tyranny (230,000gns), dam of top two-year-old Zoffany, and Hawafiz (€6,000), dam of G1-winning sprinter Markab.

BOARDING AND FOALING AT KILSHANNIG STUD As well as a proven track record of assisting clients with their bloodstock at the highest level, Merry can offer his clients a range of boarding and sales prep services at his Kilshannig Stud, which is set in 260 acres of fertile wooded parkland in the beautiful Bride Valley, County Cork. The stud’s facilities are second to none and include superb stabling, four all-weather turn-out paddocks and several miles of wooded, tranquil roadways that play an important role in the education of young horses. Pasture is maintained to optimise levels of mineral and nutrient transfer, and strict practices of parasitic control ensure maximum growth potential for breeding stock. The stud’s superb stabling and ancillary buildings include full scanning and veterinary facilities.

CLASSIC SUCCESS IN 2015 2015 has already been a vintage year for both Merry and Kilshannig Stud through the brilliant

victory of stud graduate Covert Love in the Irish Oaks. The daughter of Azamour was bred by Merry and Mark McStay out of Wing Stealth, a £9,500 purchase as a filly out of training. Meanwhile, Make Believe, bought as a foal by Merry, was never challenged to win the French 2,000 Guineas in May, and Sloane Avenue, a private breeze-up purchase, came within a short head of landing the G2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan. Top sprinter Gordon Lord Byron, also purchased privately, gained his 12th victory when successful in the Listed Dubai Duty Free Dash Stakes in June. And only a day later, another purchase, Most Beautiful (70,000gns foal), looked a Group 1 performer in the making when the easy winner of the G3 Grangecon Stakes.

LAST WORD

Final thoughts… Racing is expanding its appeal to lure middle-aged music fans. Is this a good thing, asks Nick Nugent

104

Goffs

I had an enjoyable evening recently at Leopardstown where a huge crowd was attracted by the post-racing appearance of the iconic 1980s band The Human League. These music fans became race-goers for an evening and therefore engaged in racecourse proceedings to some level which has to be good for the sport. Part of the success was that the band appealed to middle-aged, middleclass people who are seldom a “target audience” these days. Perhaps this has always been the case and is only now apparent that I have reached that stage. If you have any doubts whether you are middle-aged I suggest the following selftest, as suggested by comedian George Carlin; Do you believe that anybody who drives faster than you is a maniac and anybody who drives slower is a moron? Or perhaps you are more excited about what’s on offer in the local hardware store than in the local nightclub. Some racegoers are not enthused by these side-shows at race-meetings. As bloodstock breeders and traders our ultimate customers are owners and anything that enhances their experience is to be welcomed - there is no pleasure in seeing a parade ring with as many people in it as around the outside. Many at Leopardstown that evening belonged to that socio-economic group that a friend of ours refers to as PGFR which stands for “Plays golf, follows rugby”. I was not a rugby player at schoolon account of being very short (as I regrettably remain) and rather slender (as I regrettably do not). I therefore focussed on gentler ball sports, such as table tennis, so the finer rules of rugby remain something of a mystery for me.

It still amazes me how my friends can vociferously spot infringements from the upper level of the East Stand in Lansdowne Road while the referee, just a few feet away from the action, quite often cannot. Shortly the Rugby World Cup will take over our newspapers and television screens and will lead to plenty of banter as the seasonal bloodstock circus moves between Ireland, England and France. We all love to give an opinion on these sporting super-tournaments, although I read recently that the topics of conversation that most interest us are our own money and other people’s sex lives. Nothing actually weakens my belief in

my opinion on any subject as much as being asked for it. Vendors occasionally seek reassurance that I have some knowledge of the subject and this was particularly prevalent in Australia where I used to act as guest auctioneer at the Magic Millions Sale. When in doubt as to what to say I would look at the pedigree, focus on the sire of the second dam and say confidently “I can see a lot of Lomond in his hind leg”. Rather like the Emperor’s clothes, nobody ever raised any doubts and I even used to hear the odd groom remarking to their colleagues as I walked away, “That little Irish bloke, he knows his stuff!” If only they knew!

Many at Leopardstown that evening belonged to that socio-economic group that a friend of ours refers to as PGFR which stands for “Plays golf, follows rugby”.
