WELCOME TO THE MALDIVES The Maldives is a collection of tiny atolls, renowned for their remarkable corals and amazing variety of colourful marine life. Here you can kick off your shoes, swim to your heart’s content and truly enjoy a life of relaxation. This stunning destination can be combined with a stopover in Singapore or Dubai to make the most of your travels. An Island Paradise The 1,190 islands of the archipelago are scattered like gems across the Indian Ocean. Relax amongst palm-fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons and coral reefs. Most resorts are located on their own island with beach villas or over water bungalows – here you can swim, snorkel, visit nearby islands or see the sights. The marine life is striking and you will never tire of the numerous species of colourful fish dancing around you. There is no need to worry about your next meal, with resorts providing an amazing variety at their table-laden buffets or à la carte menus. All you need to do is relax – let the pleasures of the Maldives sweep over you. Language & Religion Language: Dhivehi, but English is spoken at resorts. Religion: Islam is the predominant religion. Passport and Visas Each person must carry a passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival into the Maldives. A 30-day visa will be issued on arrival. Asia Escape Holidays highly recommends checking all visa requirements with the appropriate embassies or consulates before making travel arrangements. Restrictions Alcohol may not be imported into the Maldives, but it can be purchased at resorts. Risqué magazines are considered offensive and will not be permitted entry. Nudism is prohibited.

Transfers & Transport You will be met on arrival and transferred by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight to your chosen resort. Food Southern Indian and Sri Lankan influences will be seen in the seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes on offer. Seafood is plentiful where as other meats are mostly imported from Australia. Fruit is imported and limited while vegetables are locally sourced. Salads are not often available. Prices for drinks will vary greatly but consider that beer will cost from US$10 per glass and wine from US$75 per bottle. Currency The local currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa, generally used in Malé only. Only credit cards and US$ are accepted at resorts. Please note that Australian Dollars cannot be exchanged! Tipping Take a supply of small denomination ($1 and $5) US Dollar notes. A tip of US$1 should suffice for porters. For exceptional service from staff, a tip of US$1 per person per night of stay can be used as a guide. However, gratuities do remain a matter of personal choice. Drinking Water It is recommended you drink bottled water only. Health Asia Escape Holidays advises you to talk to your doctor prior to departure about recommended vaccinations or medications that you may require. MALDIVES ACTIVITIES YOUR HONEYMOON The Maldives is a preferred destination for honeymooners with the islands providing that idyllic sun-drenched lifestyle which creates total relaxation. A busy day’s schedule could have you waking late, enjoying a leisurely breakfast, swimming in the lagoon, going scuba diving, having an afternoon nap and pre-dinner drinks followed by an enjoyable dinner. Of course, should you wish, there are numerous sporting activities and excursions to experience. Due to the local religion, couples from other countries cannot be legally married in the Maldives, however mock and renewal ceremonies can be performed.

DIVING & SNORKELLING The marine life in the Maldives is as amazing as it is plentiful and much of it can be seen at depths of only a few metres. For those who like to go a little deeper, scuba diving is the most popular activity of the region, with hundreds of wreck dives, reef dives and drift dives to suit all levels of experience. Some of the marine life attracted to these waters include manta rays, whale sharks, turtles, pelagics, dolphins and many species of colourful reef fish.

SURFING There is a small number of accessible breaks but the best surfing can be found in the North Malé Atoll. Surfers can base themselves at a nearby resort and hire local boats or charter a live-aboard safari vessel for the duration of their stay. May to November is generally a good time for surfing due to the prevailing south-west monsoon.

Travelling inland to the hill country sits Kandy, where visitors can observe the Temple of the Tooth Relic and superb botanical gardens. If you are making your travel arrangements directly with Asia Escape Holidays, you are accepting these booking conditions in their entirety and constitute agreement between yourself and Asia Escape Holidays. These conditions cannot be varied or any part waived without the written consent of Asia Escape Holidays. All components of the travel arrangements are provided by suppliers which operate within standards laid down by local authorities and that we believe to be reputable.
