WELCOME TO JAPAN ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’ is a mystical landscape where centuries-old castles watch over the peaceful gardens of Kyoto, where geishas slip through the cobblestoned alleyways of the Gion District and cherry blossoms blanket streets across the nation. Remarkably, such beauty co-exists effortlessly with the flashing neon lights of Tokyo and Osaka, and the crowds of fashionable locals strolling beneath futuristic, urban architecture. With iconic sights present around every corner, Japan delivers a fantasy experience. Admire the imposing presence of Mt Fuji, ski the famous powder of Hokkaido, sink into an outdoor onsen or catch a traditional Sumo wrestling tournament before unwinding with a quiet sake, a tasty donburi and some karaoke. An enriching experience, Japan has an infectious spirit and captivates visitors from all over the world with its beauty, culture and amazing hospitality. Facts Japan is situated in north-eastern Asia between the North Pacific and the Sea of Japan. The country consists of four major islands: Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Hokkaido, and is surrounded by roughly 4,000 smaller islands. The combined population is currently around 127 million. Climate A long country, Japan has a wide climate variation from north to south. Winter is December to February, with temperatures getting cooler the further north you go. Spring is from March to May and autumn from September to November; both seasons are relatively mild. Summer is from June to August and can be hot and humid. Cherry blossoms briefly bloom during spring however a viewing cannot be guaranteed at any time. Passports Each person must carry a passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival into Japan. Australian passport holders do not require a visa prior to arrival in Japan for stays up to 90 days. Asia Escape Holidays highly recommends you check all visa requirements with the appropriate embassies or consulates before commencing travel arrangements.
Drinking Water Water is safe to drink directly from the tap in Japan. However, bottled water can be easily obtained from supermarkets, convenience stores, within hotels or vending machines. Health Japan is a very clean country and travellers generally do not suffer travel-related sickness. If you do become sick, the health facilities in Japan are of a very high standard. Asia Escape Holidays advises you to talk to your doctor prior to departure about recommended vaccinations or medication that you may require. Currency The local currency is Japanese Yen. Money can be changed at licensed Travelex booths, banks or hotels. International credit cards such as VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club are widely accepted in department stores, ski resorts and restaurants. Citibank ATMs are also widely available in Tokyo and major airports. Electricity Japan’s voltage is 100 volts. Some hotels may provide adaptors on request but purchasing your own is recommended. Power points and plugs in Japan are two-flat-pinned. Travel Insurance Asia Escape Holidays highly recommends insurance when travelling to Japan. Snow holidays often require a special type of cover. Please discuss your insurance options with your travel agent. TRAVEL IN STYLE WITH OUR PARTNERS:
Language English is understood in most major tourist areas of Japan with Japanese being the national language. However, take the time to learn some basic Japanese as a little effort will be appreciated and enjoyed by the locals.

One of Japan’s ancient capitals, Kyoto is overflowing with UNESCO World Heritage listed sites and is home to a wealth of elaborate temples, shrines and gardens dating back over one thousand years.
TAKAYAMA Often referred to as ‘Little Kyoto’ Takayama is a city in Japan’s mountainous Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating back to the Edo Period, along with many small museums.

NIKKO
NARA

With countless shrines, temples and museums paying tribute to its 1,300 year history, Nara offers an interesting insight into the traditions of Japanese culture.
MUST-SEE AREAS
HIROSHIMA Known as the first city devastated by an atomic bomb during World War II, Hiroshima represents a tribute to the tragic event and is home to the Peace Memorial Park. The Red Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine is also a highlight offering stunning views.
TOKYO
The nation’s capital is a vast spread of unique and lively districts, each one distinctively Japanese. A hub for shopping and dining, Tokyo is famed for the huge department stores of Ginza and the fashionable retail district of Harajuku, as well as the dining and nightlife hotspots of Shinjuku and Roppongi. History and some welcome serenity can be found within the gardens of the Imperial Palace or the Meiji Shrine, while beyond the garden walls the future awaits with ultra-modern skyscrapers, stores of hi-tech gadgets and museums of modern art. Well-prepared visitors may be lucky enough to view a Sumo wrestling tournament at Kokugikan, or simply sit beneath the springtime cherry blossoms at Showa Kinen Park. For most however, the thrill of Tokyo is simply getting lost within the urban masses, taking in the colourful neon lights, and people-watching.

Remembered for the tragic events of the 6th August 1945, the city of Hiroshima has become a symbol of peace and revival, welcoming visitors into its thriving, multicultural city. For most visitors, the central attraction is the Peace Memorial Park, with over fifty memorials and perhaps the most recognisable symbol, the A-Bomb Dome which remains largely intact to this day. Amid the emotional tributes throughout the city, Hiroshima offers visitors an escape in the form of Shukkeien Park, a beautifully landscaped Japanese garden, along with a number of fantastic art museums, historic shrines, a dedicated sporting culture and some of the country’s best dining. Hiroshima is renowned for its take on Okonomiyaki (savoury pancake), with a multitude of eateries serving it up throughout the city, as well as a vibrant nightlife. An enriching experience, Hiroshima delivers more than meets the eye, allowing visitors a glimpse into the past and an exciting view to the future.

WELCOME TO HONG KONG Immerse yourself in all the excitement, flavours and vibrancy of Hong Kong. Be taken from the old to the new, east to west and city to nature. Hong Kong comprises of three main areas: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories, each with their own unique character. Experience sophisticated shopping, delectable cuisines and explore the bustling markets, cultural and heritage attractions that truly capture Hong Kong in all its charm. Macau is a diverse city of culture, heritage and attractions. While parts of the city remain as old colonial Portugal, through churches, stone fortresses and traditional cuisine, other parts of Macau are ultra-modern with an abundant variety of Las Vegas-style casinos. Experience the true meaning of East meets West in this fun and exciting city. A must see for anyone visiting Hong Kong. Lantau Island is the largest in Hong Kong and is located at the mouth of the Pearl River. Take a day trip to Lantau Island and discover beautiful beaches, traditional fishing villages, green valleys and soaring mountains. For a spiritual experience take the cable car up to the Ngong Ping Monastery and view the giant Buddha or visit Hong Kong Disneyland. Lantau Island is easily accessible from the mainland, which is why so many visitors take day trips to see another side of Hong Kong. Climate Hong Kong has a subtropical climate featuring cool, relatively dry winters and hot, humid summers. The best time to visit Hong Kong is from late September to December, where temperatures remain moderate. From March to May, the weather is warm and humid with fog and drizzle also permitting. The rainy season is from June to August and the weather is usually hot and humid. Passport and Visas Visitors must carry a passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival into Hong Kong. Australian passport holders do not require a visa prior to arrival in Hong Kong for visits up to three months. However they will require a visa prior to arrival into China. Asia Escape Holidays highly recommends checking all visa requirements with the appropriate embassies or consulates before making travel arrangements. Alternatively, please ask your travel agent for more information.
Language The national languages in Hong Kong are English and Chinese (mainly Cantonese). English is widely understood and spoken in tourist areas. Drinking Water Bottled water is available at local supermarkets and in your hotel. It is not recommended to drink tap water. Avoid drinks with ice cubes and brush your teeth with bottled water. Transport Public transport in Hong Kong is efficient, easy to use and moderately priced. The major form of public transportation is the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) train network. It serves 89 stations and runs every 2 to 12 minutes from 6am to just after midnight. Hong Kong’s cross-harbour ferries are faster and are relatively cheaper than the MTR and local buses. Health Asia Escape Holidays advises you to talk to your doctor prior to departure about recommended vaccinations or medication that you may require. If you become ill please seek advice from the hotel you are staying at. Currency The local currency is the Hong Kong Dollar. Money can be changed at licensed currency exchanges, banks and hotels. Some hotels will provide adaptors on request however purchasing your own universal adaptor is recommended. Travel Insurance Asia Escape Holidays highly recommends insurance when travelling overseas. Please discuss your insurance options with your travel agent. TRAVEL IN STYLE WITH OUR PARTNERS:
