A man who pinned a 15-yearold Asian boy to the ground and sliced open his cheek in a racist attack, has gone on the run after a four-day special release from prison. Jerry Monerville, 47, of Claremont Square, off Pentonville Road, Islington, is currently serving an eight-year sentence for attacking the teenager with an accomplice, Shane Doyle, 26. The boy had been sitting alone on a park bench in Bethnal Green, east London in November 2010. The vile pair attacked the 15-

year-old from behind and Monerville sat on the boy and continued to slash his face twice with a knife. When the boy asked why they had attacked him they spat back: “It’s cos you’re a f***ing Paki” and kicked him before they left. Now Monerville, who was released on Friday 11th April has failed to return to prison at 3.30pm on Tuesday 15th April. It has not yet been revealed why he was allowed out for four days. It’s been speculated that he may be in hiding in Herne Bay, Kent.

It’s not every day that one of the world’s most renowned singers pays a visit to your place of work yet for East End PLC, that is exactly what happened earlier this week. On Friday 11th April, hundreds gathered outside the New Birmingham Library for Sartaaj’s Birmingham press conference where he addressed the media and fans ahead of his UK tour. The man with the golden voice will be performing at six venues across the country, with his first date set for Saturday 19th April at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall. Yet before his music is unleashed on his adoring British fans, Sartaaj paid a visit to one of his tour’s sponsors. East End PLC greeted the chart topper on Monday 14th April at the Aston Cross site – the former home of HP sauce which was redeveloped with an £11million investment three years ago – where he was given a tour of the premises before having a meet and greet with family and friends of the company. The Aston site, together with the West Bromwich premises (opened in 2000), cover a total of 600,000sq/ft, about the size of 30 football pitches, and just illustrate the enormity of East End PLC. Sartaaj also met with customers before witnessing the production process of many of the company’s own products first hand. Jason and Jasbir Wouhra, Directors at the national company, were two members of the family who showed Sartaaj round throughout the day and the prior said it was a fantastic experience.

“He is a very nice, down-toearth guy and is of course extremely talented,” he said. “It was a privilege to have him come to our store and share dinner with him in our boardroom. “He was interested to see how all our products were made and appreciated the fact that they are all done on site and produced here in the UK. “We have had a number of celebrities and politicians visit us but Sartaaj was certainly one of

Female jazz fusion singer Farah Siraj, a music superstar in the Arab world and many European countries, visits LAAF in what is her only UK show this year, in the impressive surroundings of Liverpool’s St George’s Hall on Sunday 8th June. Farah Siraj has a style all her

own, which she describes as Arabian Flamenco Jazz. Siraj has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious platforms, including the United Nations, Nobel Prize Hall and the World Economic Forum. The British Sikh Report (BSR) is the only strategic document of its kind, aimed at governmental bodies and national institutions alike, which draws attention to the aspirations of the British Sikh community across a range of areas. Compiled by a collective of British Sikh professionals and academics, it is based on quantitative research and will be used to help better understand and meet the various needs of the Sikh community. It is anticipated that the report will assist non-Sikh organisations in working with the current British Sikh population on collaborative projects. Some of the key findings in the report related to the financial strength of British Sikhs. The report found that two-thirds of British Sikh households (66%) have pre-tax incomes above £40,000, and over a third (34%) have a household income in excess of £80,000. Taking into account the average size of the British Sikh household, the report values the Sikh contribution to the British economy at a staggering £7.63billion. In terms of wealth and assets, home ownership is very high amongst British Sikhs with 87% of households owning at least a portion of their home. 30% of British Sikh households own their homes outright and only 9% rent their properties. A mere 1% of British Sikhs claim Housing Benefit. According to the report, British Sikhs are clear net contributors to the British economy and have a strong entrepreneurial drive, with about one in three British Sikh families (34%) owning a business in the UK. Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Opposition, comments, “The Sikh community is one which has made an immense contribution to British society over many years. I welcome the British Sikh Report 2014 for the insight it helps to provide to the community." David Cameron, the Prime Minister, comments, "The British Sikh community is one of the most hard-working and successful groups in the UK, contributing so much to our culture, economy and way of life. I commend the British Sikh Report 2014 for its continuing efforts to engage politicians in dialogue on matters concerning the British Sikh community." Jasvir Singh, chair of the British Sikh Report, comments, "The British Sikh Report 2014 has helped to show just how powerful the Sikh contribution to the British economy is. The document was launched at a Parliamentary event on Wednesday 9th April where Sadiq Khan MP (Shadow Justice Secretary), Priti Patel MP and Lord Dholakia amongst others spoke of the positive relationship between Sikhs and Britain and discussed the findings of the report.

Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore has slammed his own force after they took 20 hours to warn the public about Monerville’s disappearance, despite promises to improve performances after recent incidents. Violent Jerry Monerville failed to return to Hollesley Bay open prison, which is a notoriously insecure and has been dubbed ‘Holiday Bay’ by inmates. The area's crime commissioner has slammed the force over the delays to inform the public, after promising to tighten up security following similar blunders when another convict went on the run last year. This is the third escape in three years. Mr Passmore said he would be challenging Suffolk Chief Constable Douglas Paxton about

the embarrassing blunder and will be seeking cast-iron guarantees that errors are not made in the future. He said: “I was given an assurance by the Deputy Chief Constable last July that communications to the public in these situations would be reviewed. “Clearly this is not working and that is completely unsatisfactory. “I will now take this up with the Chief Constable again and seek a cast-iron guarantee that such public information is released without delay.” Police have tried to trace Monerville without success and have issued an appeal to find him. He is described as white, of thin build with brown eyes and black hair, and has connections with Herne Bay. Police say anyone who sees Monerville should call 101, but should not approach him or take any other action.

Five Indian organisations have been selected as finalists for this year’s Ashden Awards, the world’s leading green energy awards, ahead of an awards ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 22 May 2014. Some 400 million Indians live without access to modern forms of electricity, while 159 million cook using traditional fuels like wood and dung, which harms health and pollutes the air. A Pakistani court has withdrawn the case against a nine-month-old baby who was facing charges of attempted murder in his homeland. Little Musa Khan was forced to attend two court hearings, facing charges, alongside family members, of planning a murder, threatening police and interfering in state affairs. Sitting on his grandfather’s lap, he clutched a milk bottle as the case was presented over day one before the judge dismissed the baby on the second day stating that he should never have been brought into the case. Musa’s grandfather and his three sons remain on trial. Police officers in the country say they will take action against an investigating officer who allowed the situation to arise, which has only pointed out flaws in Pakistan’s dysfunctional justice system. On the first day, Musa was seen crying as his fingerprints were

taken whilst his grandfather questioned the logic behind the case. “He doesn't even know how to pick up his milk bottle properly. How can he stone the police?” he told reporters outside the Lahore court. Musa and his adult relatives were charged this month with attempting to murder a policeman after his family clashed with police and gas company workers trying to collect overdue bills, with Police registering a case against the whole family, following the disagreement. “Police told the court that the nomination of Musa in the case of attacking police and gas company officials was a human error and Musa is not required,” defence lawyer Irfan Sadiq told Reuters. As Musa was taken from court on day two in his grandmother’s arms, the case against the rest of his family was overshadowed by the little boy, whose ordeal may signal an imminent, and much needed, reform of the country’s justice system.

Dhaba Lane, say the ladies, is a fresh new way to grab a tasty, healthy lunch on the go – infused with the exotic flavours of India. The company is named after the ‘Dhabas’ (roadside shacks) on the Indian and Pakistani highways, where truckers will stop for a quick bite and a cup of chai (tea). These shacks have garnered a reputation for the quality of their food and attract a wider range of customers from all social classes. South Asian food is a cuisine Britain loves a lot and currently it

Staff at a London salon said they had a ‘close shave’ with the North Korean Embassy earlier this week after a picture of the country’s leader was used in advertising the store’s services. A large poster with an image of Kim Jong Un was placed in the window of M&M Hair Academy in South Ealing, West London, with the question ‘Bad hair day?’ branded across it. Barber, Karim Nabbach, said embassy officials from the country turned up at the salon earlier this week questioning why an image of their leader was being used in the advertising campaign. He explained: “We put up posters for an offer for men's haircuts through the month of April. Obviously in the current news there has been this story that North Korean men are only allowed one haircut. “We didn't realise but the North Korean embassy is a 10-minute walk from the salon. The next day we had North Korean officials pop into the salon asking to speak to the manager. “He (the manager) said ‘listen this isn't North Korea, this is England, we live in a democracy so I'm afraid you're going to have to get out of my salon’.” The manager later contacted police in regard to the matter and was told embassy officials had also contacted the authorities yet no action was to be

taken. “We haven't had any trouble since then, if anything the poster has become a tourist attraction,” Karim said. A Met Police spokesperson added: “We have spoken to all parties involved and no offence has

been disclosed.” Last month it was reported that every male university student in North Korea would have to don the ‘Kim Jong Un haircut’. Previously, males were allowed to choose from ten styles, and women had the option of 18. Asian Express London art premiere

For the first time, the final nine paintings by celebrated Indian artist M F Husain - which were painted just days before he passed away in London, will go on public display at the Victoria and Albert museum this summer. The Indian Civilization series, also known as Vision of India through Mohenje Daro to Mahatma Gandhi, comprises eight monumental triptych paintings, each measuring 12 feet wide by six feet high, which represent Husain's vision of the richness of Indian culture and history. The artist's initial intention was to paint 96 panels exploring the breadth of Indian culture. Unfortunately he died before he could achieve this ambition. Husain's handwritten notes, describing his ideas, themes and stories for each painting and explaining the scenes depicted, will be included in the exhibition guide. The series was commissioned by the London-based billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and his wife Usha Mittal in 2008 and have never previously been on public display. Usha Mittal has lent the paintings to the V&A, where the artist completed a residency in 1990, to showcase the final works of this remarkable artist.

A woman rushed past security and threw a shoe at Hillary Clinton in Las Vegas on Thursday 10th April, but it missed and the former US secretary of state laughed off the incident. The woman launched the projectile at the 66-year-old former First Lady as she was addressing a meeting of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). Clinton, the presumed frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, ducked as the object whizzed past at head height to the left of her. "What was that, a bat?... Is that somebody throwing something at me?" Clinton said initially at the event at the Mandalay Bay hotel/casino, according to video footage by the local KTNV station. Regaining her composure and sense of humor, she added: "Is that part of Cirque du Soleil?" - a reference to the acrobatic dance troupe, which has several shows in Vegas. "My goodness, I didn't know that solid waste management was so controversial. Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she said, drawing laughter and cheers from the audience. The blonde woman who threw the shoe was immediately escorted out of the hall, her hands in the air. She was later arrested, according to sources. A spokesman for the organisers said the woman was not accredited for the meeting. "Our staff denied her access before she later rushed past security. An ISRI staffer then stopped her as she approached the stage. She was then handed over to law enforcement," ISRI spokesman Mark Carpenter told AFP. He added: "We are grateful that Secretary Clinton continued in a professional manner to share her firsthand knowledge and experience of how the recycling industry has a positive impact on the economy and environment." The most famous shoe-thrower of recent years was the Iraqi journalist who hurled his own footwear at president George W. Bush at a press conference in Baghdad in December 2008. Muntazer al-Zaidi was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a head of state. That was reduced to one year on appeal, and his sentence was cut further for good behavior.

Downing Street welcomes a ‘Flood Hero’ Selfless teen meets Prime Minister at special reception

A teenager from London said he was ‘very excited’ after hearing of the news that he was to be greeted personally by the British Prime Minister following his work with the country’s flood relief efforts. 16-year-old Zafar Ahmad, from Southfields, London, finally met David Cameron on Monday 7th April at 10 Downing Street. After picking up the Hero’ award, ‘Flood four other alongside volunteers, live on ITV’s Daybreak, and receiving a cheque of £5,000 by Sir Richard Branson to go towards his chosen charity, Zafar was invited to the historic home of British politics. During his half-term holidays in February, the enthusiastic volunteer joined others from Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), a UK youth charity, to assist with the wider flood relief efforts being carried out across the country, including the Staines, Chertsey, and Somerset areas. Zafar spent almost every

day helping however he could, whether filling and delivering sandbags, or helping with the massive clean-up operation of the St. Paul's Church in Staines. Speaking before he finally met Mr Cameron, he said: “I'm a bit nervous about attending the reception, but at the same time very excited to meet the Prime Minister. “Young people are often highlighted for all sorts of negative reasons, but I would like to assure the Prime Minister that there are many positive young Brits who enjoy helping others on a daily basis.” He added: “I don't consider what I did to be special, but simply fulfilment of my religious duty as a British Muslim to serve my country. “I would like to thank ITV for highlighting the plight of those affected by the floods as well as Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Unite for offering such a kind donation, which I am donating in full to help the flood victims.” Jamal Akbar, the AMYA youth coordinator who was so moved by Zafar's selflessness that he put the teenager’s name forward for the award, added: “In my

A leaked document last month claimed an alleged plot to oust twelve Birmingham head teachers to make their schools more suitable to accommodate Islamic principles. At the centre of the controversy was Tahir Alam, the chair of Governors for Park view High School, blamed for instigating ‘Operation Trojan Horse’ which claimed a ‘Muslim take over’ of Schools as far as Bradford. The document, 'Operation Trojan Horse', whose author is unknown and whose claims are unattested allegedly argued that schools were “corrupting children with sex education, teaching about homosexuals, making their (Muslim) children say Christian prayers and mixed swimming and sports." The story hit headlines in national newspapers leading Birmingham Council and even Education Secretary Michael Gove to call for further inquiry and investigations into the allegations. Tahir Alam has been surprised by the heavy handedness shown in the Inspections carried out in schools, citing it as unprecedented on how

such action can be taken on the grounds of an un-verified report. “I have worked voluntarily as a school governor since 1997 for nothing other than the improvement of children’s education" Trustee and Governor Dave Hughes of Park View School said “When I started as a governor there was no Halal food served, no arrangements for student prayer, for those who wanted it and girls who wanted to wear headscarves were not allowed to.All these things are now in place.” “In all my time as a Governor we have not received a single complaint about ‘extremism’ or ‘radicalism’. If we had we would have investigated it openly and thoroughly”. The investigation continues.

A pet parrot is being hailed as a hero after the bird flapped its wings, squawked and scared away a man who assaulted its owner in a park here. A 25-year-old woman, who was taking her pet African Grey parrot for a walk in Sunny Hill Park in Hendon, last week, was saved by her unusual walking partner. An unknown man is reported to have grabbed the woman by the shoulders and pushed her to the ground with both hands. However, the attacker ran off when the bird, named Wunsy, flapped its wings and squawked, trying to defend its owner. “This was a random attack on a woman walking out of a park,” police said. “Although the parrot, Wunsy, came to her rescue, we are obviously very keen to trace the suspect and prevent him from attacking anybody else.” The woman and the parrot were unharmed by the assault, police said.

Working in partnership with Tauheedul Relief Trust and Mo Farah Foundation, the bags were designed and created by the pupils over the past few weeks. Each bag was then filled with

stationery items. Commenting on the efforts of the girls, Creative Arts Teacher Rukaiya Issa said: “This was an amazing heartfelt effort from our girls. “They personally designed and personalised the bags and filled them with stationery, which will directly impact the life of disadvantaged children overseas. Train blast

Fourteen passengers were killed and about 50 wounded on Tuesday when militants bombed a train in Pakistan's Baluchistan province, hospital sources and officials said. The blast came a day after Pakistani security forces said they had killed 30 separatist militants in one of the biggest clashes in months in the gas-rich province. The separatist United Baluch Army claimed responsibility, saying in a text message to Reuters the bombing was retaliation for the raids by security forces. The bomb went off on the Rawalpindi-bound Jaffar Express in a carriage reserved for men, in the town of Sibi, 120 km (75 miles) southeast of the provincial capital of Quetta. “Fire engulfed the (carriage) following the blast causing most of the deaths,” said a rescue worker. Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique confirmed the death toll.

More than 280 people, many of them students from the same high school, were missing after a ferry capsized off South Korea on Wednesday, in what could be the country's biggest maritime disaster in over 20 years. The ferry was carrying 462 people coastguard officials said. 14 people were confirmed dead, but as frantic rescue operations continued late into the night under light from flares after the first day, hopes were fading for the 282 unaccounted for. It was not immediately clear why the Sewol ferry listed heavily on to its side and capsized in apparently calm conditions off South Korea's southwest coast, but some survivors spoke of a loud noise prior to the disaster. “It was fine. Then the ship went 'boom' and there was a noise of cargo falling,” said Cha Eun-ok, who was on the deck of the ferry taking photographs at the time. “The on-board announcement told people to stay put ... people who stayed are trapped,” she said in Jindo, the nearest town to the scene of the accident.

Malala art to fetch thousands

A painting of Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for education for girls, is set to fetch up to £47,000 when it goes up for auction next month. The portrait of the 16-year-old was created by Jonathan Yeo and is being sold to raise money for the Malala Fund, a charity she set up to support the fight for girls' right to education. The piece, entitled Girl Reading, will go on sale at Christie's in New York and is estimated to fetch 60,000-80,000 US dollars (£35,000-£47,000). It follows the recent Jonathan Yeo Portraits exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The exhibition, which ran from September 2013 to January 2014, featured portraits of diverse subjects including Rupert Murdoch, Kevin Spacey in his role as Richard III, Idris Elba and Michael Parkinson.

Modi dismisses ‘nuclear’ claims

Prime ministerial frontrunner Narendra Modi ruled out the first use of nuclear weapons on Wednesday, seeking to calm concerns after his Hindu nationalist party vowed to revise arms strategy if elected. Modi told the ANI television service the nuclear arms were defensive weapons. India and its rival neighbour Pakistan are both nuclear powers that have been building up their nuclear arms stockpiles and testing long range missiles. Two British tourists have drowned in the sea off Tenerife after reportedly trying to rescue their children. The female victims, 42-year-old Uma Ramalingam and her relative Barathi Ravikumar, 39, went to help the youngsters after they were swept away by a wave. But the women - both doctors got into difficulties themselves near the resort of Playa Paraiso in the southwest of the island on April 6th. The youngsters, aged 10 and 14, were rescued by tourists and hotel workers while an emergency services helicopter pulled a third woman, 38, out of the water. She and the two children survived but the two other women each suffered a cardiac arrest and attempts to revive them were unsuccessful. A spokeswoman for Canary Islands emergency services said: "At just after 6pm yesterday afternoon we received several calls alerting us to two people who were in difficulties in the sea. "Witnesses rescued two women and two children from the sea. An emergency helicopter located a fifth person in the sea, a woman, and one of the respondents dangled out of the craft and pulled her out. "Staff from the Canaries health service, a doctor from a nearby health centre and another doctor who was at the scene found that two women were in cardiac arrest and tried to give them advanced CPR without success. "They later certified the death of both women. They also helped

stabilise the other people, taking a woman and a child to hospital." The 10-year-old child was reportedly taken to hospital with hypothermia while the 14-year-old was treated for minor bruises at the scene. The third woman was in cardiac arrest when she was rescued but survived after receiving CPR. A Guardia Civil spokeswoman confirmed the two women who died were British and relatives of the children, but said it had not been ascertained how they were related. An investigation is now under way. Dr Ramalingam was a consultant obstetrician at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Mr Olubusola Amu, from the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are greatly saddened to hear the death of Uma who had been working for the Trust for about six years. "She was a fantastic doctor who brought a lot of hope to the high risk women attending the Women and Children's Unit at The Royal Oldham Hospital. "This is a terrible shock to everyone who knew Uma. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time. She will be sorely missed." Dr Ravikumar was a partner at a health surgery in Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln and has been described as "a hard-working and dedicated GP" who "always worked in the best interests of patients". A statement on her surgery's website said: "During her short time with the practice she was passionate about making a difference to healthcare in Lincolnshire and specialised in working with Looked After

SALT: THE SILENT KILLER Alarmingly, almost everyone in the UK eats too much salt. Currently, the daily recommended amount of salt in the UK is no more than 6 grams (just a teaspoon!) – the current average salt intake in 8.6g (with many consuming more than this). Despite the recommended amount of salt being 6 grams, those with high blood pressure should be actively eating less than the specified amount. Excessive salt consumption is one of the largest factors contributing towards high blood pressure; though high blood pressure may not seem as serious as other illnesses, it can be a root cause of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, stomach cancer, osteoporosis and renal failure. Genetics can cause us to be particularly sensitive to too much salt and this is most definitely the case with South Asians. Various studies into South Asian health have determined that those of Indian / Pakistani / Bengali descent are at a

higher risk of high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Shockingly, South Asians are 30-40% more likely to die prematurely from heart disease in comparison to the rest of the UK population and they are six times more likely to have diabetes than the average UK population. In spite of these worrying statistics, reduction of salt in the diets of South Asians is very limited. Whilst the majority of the UK consume (and exceed) their recommended daily amount of salt from processed foods, in the South Asian population, almost all of the salt consumed is added during cooking or at the table. The astronomical amounts of salt that the community have unwittingly incorporated into their diet is masked by the variety of spices that also go into the common curry / fried snack.

What can you do to reduce your salt intake? It is not necessary to completely eradicate salt from your diet – but by cutting the amount down you will be decreasing your risk of a whole load of health complications. Small changes can give you big results: Quite obviously, don’t add salt to your food and cut down the amount used when cooking Choose low-salt versions of popular table sauces (tomato ketchup, soy sauce, chilli sauces and mayonnaise can sometimes contain the same amount of salt as sea water!) Pepper, herbs, fresh chillis and other spices can be used as salt replacements to enhance the flavour of food Look out for 'green' on the traffic light label on product packaging for salt content Cut down on crisps, salted nuts and Bombay mix Just because something costs more

does not mean it is better for you! Rock salt and sea salt are just as damaging to health as the common table salt Do not be fooled when companies list ‘sodium’ rather than salt – it is a part of salt! If just sodium levels are listed, multiply it by 2.5 to get the salt level (1g of sodium equates to 2.5g salt, 2g of sodium equates to 5g salt etc.) Remember – a low salt food has less than 0.3g or less of salt per 100g By incorporating the above into your day to day lifestyle, positive changes will most definitely be observed. While food may begin to taste slightly bland when you first decrease salt levels, tastebuds will gradually get used to this change (this can take up to three weeks) – so perseverance is key.

A Birmingham tax fraudster has been sentenced to four years in prison after plans to build his own personal ‘Buckingham Palace’ in Pakistan was thwarted by police. 42-year-old Mohammed Suleman Khan was living a life of luxury in his Moseley home, having cheated the tax man by almost £500,000 over a nine year period. Despite appearing to have no job on paper in the UK, and only transferring minimal amounts through bank accounts in the country, it was his lavish spending in Pakistan which alerted the authorities. Detectives investigating Khan’s lifestyle found that he had actually commissioned work for a £2.4million palace to be constructed in Pakistan which a judge described as his own ‘Buckingham Palace’. The building, upon completion, would have included its own library, private cinema and even servant quarters. It was a search of Khan’s home which unveiled the true plans for the mammoth operation in Pakistan’s Attock region. The tax evader’s defence argued that their client was a legitimate businessman who had earned just £300,000 over a nine year period. Yet officers from West Midlands Police Force CID, investigating the accused, had found that Khan had already spent £893,000 on the outer-shell and roof of his Pakistan project, on top of at least £300,000 income for

New tests for takeaway ‘lamb’ Do you really know what is in your food? Well new tests which are soon to be introduced by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) will certainly give you a clearer picture of what you are eating. The FSA announced earlier this week that it will begin a new round of tests on lamb takeaway meals from restaurants across the UK after the consumer watchdog found evidence of cheaper substitutes such as beef and chicken. The FSA said local authorities were being asked to test 300 samples from restaurants providing takeaway meals and report their findings to the agency with the sampling set to start at the beginning of May.

The agency said mislabelling of food could result in fines of up to £5,000 and that businesses that are found to deliberately mislabel food could face prosecution. An FSA review of local authority sampling data from July to December 2013 found that 43 out of 145 samples of lamb takeaway meals contained meat other than lamb. Other meat species identified included chicken and turkey yet no samples were found to contain horse meat, it said. Last year a scandal broke around Europe when traces of horse were found in frozen burgers sold in Irish and British supermarkets.

Leeds author gives us Ridiculous Witches! Sarah Shafi brings fun and mystery to Headingley LitFest 2014 By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk One of Leeds’ fastest rising children’s authors made sure her home city was not forgotten about last weekend as a ‘Ridiculous Witch’ was spotted in Headingley. ‘The odd legged car crashing witch of Leeds’ is the latest book to be released by Yorkshire author, Sarah Shafi, in her ‘Ridiculous Witches’ series, and was read for the first time at Headingley LitFest 2014. The Leeds-based story follows on from the likes of ‘The Royal trumping witch of Windsor’ and ‘The Ludicrous pie-eating witch of Wigan’, with Leeds’ nonsensical character living up to her predecessor’s reputations. This latest tale follows Headingley’s very own witch, who, much like the author, grew

up on Spring Road in Leeds and has a passion for cars. But, like all the other ‘Ridiculous witches’ before her, there is a big problem she must overcome. “She is a good witch but she has had a wicked witch as a mother who has turned her into a toad so she has a problem,” Sarah explained. “She has every single car on the planet, Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches, the lot, but they’re all being smashed up across Leeds. But, there is a very special reason for this, and you will find out why it is when you read the book.” The Ridiculous Witches books have quickly become a favourite amongst youngsters aged between six and tenyears-old, with famed artist, Tony Husband (Private Eye), providing illustrations for every book. Having only begun writing children books within the last three to four years, Sarah Shafi

has quickly found her forte and she says this is down to one person in particular. “My daughter, Persia, is my absolute rock of inspiration,” she said. “She is ten-years-old now and whilst she has grown up she, and her friends, have loved listening to my crazy, made-up stories. “It wasn’t until recently that I actually put pen to paper and started writing the books and they can take anything from a couple of weeks to months to complete. “I’ve always had an overactive, weird imagination ever since I was a kid, so the Ridiculous Witches stories are something I just love doing.” Being from Leeds is something Sarah says she has always been proud of and therefore it was only a matter of time until her stories came to the city. She added: “This tale is particularly close to my heart because she shares my story of

coming from Headingley. “The dialect in the book is ‘very Yorkshire’ as well so it really feels like a book that the local community could relate to.” Ridiculous Witches from cities across England, including Windsor, York, Manchester, Wigan and most recently Leeds, must sort out their problems before they can be considered ‘proper witches’. With moral twists and wacky storylines, the tales have proved to be a big hit already, whilst the ‘Odd legged car crashing witch of Leeds’ was warmly received by tens of children and their parents at Headingley library last weekend. In a free, open reading, Sarah read her book to the youngsters before a question and answer session took place as part of Headingley LitFest 2014. The annual festival spans across Headingley and still has a number of events taking place over the next week.

Highest honour for BRI doctor

A doctor from Bradford Royal Infirmary said he was ‘incredibly humbled’ after learning of the news that he was to be honoured with his home country’s highest civilian honour. Dr Sulleman Moreea, originally from Mauritius, was awarded the Grand Officer of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean award earlier this month from the President of the African nation. Since 2008 he has worked closely with Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, and the country’s Ministry of Health, to introduce, train and improve endoscopies across the five hospitals. Having done much of the work at his own expense, including travel, equipment, and training, and all in his own time, Dr Moreea was told he was to receive a medal for his efforts yet never expected to receive such a prestigious accolade. “It was on Sunday 9th March that I got a phone call from the Mauritius Prime Minister telling me the country was going to give me a medal for the work I had done and it would be announced on Wednesday 12th,” he said. “I was obviously full of pride but I told him that I may not be able to make it at such short notice as I hadn’t booked any time off. “It was actually my family and co-workers who insisted I went. My colleagues were amazing, they took care of all my work that week because they said it was a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity I couldn’t miss’.” He added: “When the list was announced and I saw which medal I was to receive I was incredibly humbled, shocked and surprised. “I would have felt extremely privileged to receive any medal but

this one has certainly acted as motivation for me to finish what I started in the country.” Dr Moreea first began working in Mauritius six years ago after organising one-to-one training following a discussion with the country’s Prime Minister, who is also a former doctor at the Yorkshire Clinic. His work across the five hospitals has helped improve the operating standards significantly whilst endoscopies can now be performed in units which previously didn’t even exist. In one hospital, in the south of the country, Dr Moreea not only paid for an architect to design a room which could cater for endoscopy facilities but also paid for the equipment. Running since 2012, and officially opened in 2013, it has so far performed more than 600 cases. Yet, Dr Moreea insists that single achievements like this are not what he is most proud of. “Unfortunately, with Mauritius being a small country and having a lot of private health care, people previously did not like to share their knowledge and talents with others,” he explained. “If you said to me, ‘what am I most proud of, teaching people how to do endoscopy or changing the mind-set of the people’, I’d say I’m much more proud of the latter. “Hospitals work best when people help each other and I like to believe that I have helped change the culture in Mauritius which will only benefit the next generation of doctors. “At the end of the day, I do this because I enjoy it. I enjoy teaching, I enjoy seeing people making progress and I enjoy seeing the country making an effort to help its people.”

An interview with former West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable, Jawaid Akhtar By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

For 32 years, Jawaid Akhtar was proud to call himself a member of the West Yorkshire Police Force yet at the start of 2014, he finally called time on his long-standing career and became ‘just Jawaid’ once again. Involved in some of the biggest cases in West Yorkshire throughout the last four decades, he will perhaps be best remembered for spearheading the investigation into Bradford’s ‘Crossbow Cannibal’, Steven Griffiths. His rise up the ranks eventually saw him obtain the role as West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable upon retirement, after beginning as just another officer in Huddersfield in 1982. One of the very first Asian officers in the force, he helped pioneer the way for an inclusive institution, educating many and breaking down barriers. Despite experiencing a rise in Islamophobia following cases such as 9/11 and the Lee Rigby killing, he never doubted that a career in the police wasn’t for him. Speaking to the Asian Express, he remembered what it was like starting out as an officer and the importance of his family’s support in the early days. “When I started in the police in Halifax in ‘82, I was one of the early few Asian officers to join the force,” he said. “It was a very different organisation to the one now. With so few people

‘It was my responsibility to help others learn about our culture’ from the BME community I guess there was a curiosity really surrounding me. “It wasn’t so much a bad thing, just a lot of people hadn’t experienced an Asian officer before so they just wanted to know what it was all about. “I guess you could compare it to a white person going to a very rural part of India and the local kids come out to see you because they have never seen a white person before. It wasn’t quite as extreme as that but there was certainly intrigue around us. “As one of the first Asian officers, I felt like I had a duty to help educate others and that is something I am very proud to have done from day one to the end – It was my responsibility to help others learn.” He added: “I came from a workingclass background. My father worked in the mill, my eldest brother was a bus driver, and the other a mechanic so I wouldn’t say I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. “I just had an extraordinary supportive family who wanted me to go into higher education and wanted me to get a good job, which I did through the graduate scheme.” Jawaid joined the Huddersfield branch of the police on the graduate scheme, a fast-track motion system that allowed him to rise up the ranks quickly. It was just another thing that made

him unique and stand out to others in the force. “It was like a double whammy I guess,” he said. “As an Asian officer I was somewhat unique but to be a graduate at that time as well just added to the whole interest around me.” Despite experiencing occasional racist slurs, Jawaid said he never once thought that the police ‘wasn’t for him’ and said there were always people there for support throughout his career. As he began to rise up the ranks he got more and more responsibility and in one of his last investigations, he was the lead in one of Bradford’s most shocking crimes of recent memory. The ‘Crossbow Cannibal’ case saw Stephen Griffiths murder three sex workers in the city and Jawaid was appointed Gold Commander for the investigation. He said: “I remember sitting there one day with the senior investigating officer for that job who was Sukhbir Singh. “I just sat there and thought, ‘who would have thought 30 years ago, on a case as significant as this, you would have an Asian gold commander and senior investigating officer’. “Back when I was a Detective Sergeant, I went to a scene involving an Asian family and spoke to them in Punjabi. Despite me being the highest ranking officer there, they just

assumed I wasn’t as important as the white officers because of the colour of my skin. “So fast forward to the Stephen Griffiths case in 2009 and it shows how far we have come. It is one of the cases I am most proud of working on.” Despite the improved workplace for members of the BME community in the police, Jawaid added that there was still work to be done. “There are still so few officers in the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) ranks that are from a BME background,” he said. “Five or six years ago we were into double figures; I think there is about four left now so the challenge is still there. “I haven’t got the magic wand or answer as to why this is the case and I’d say for anyone who can explain it, there is a degree in it for them. Profile, ambitions, support, all these things contribute. “ Jawaid is succeeded in the force by his son, Moshin, who currently works out of the Huddersfield base. On his final day, the father-and-son pair patrolled the streets for one last time, and despite his full backing of Moshin, Jawaid admits he still worries as a caring father.

“Obviously there was great sense of pride that day and almost nostalgia to be back where it all started on my final day, but this time I was with my son,” he said. “As a parent you still sort of worry and having been in the job, and having seen what happens in terms of some of the criticism people face, being a parent it is only natural to have them worries. “But, to see Moshin continue in the force is fantastic and he will be there for at least 30 years.” For a man from Pakistan, who moved to the UK at the age of 10 speaking no English, to have finished up as deputy chief constable of the fourth largest force in country is something quite remarkable, it is the story of Jawaid Akhtar.

Leaking loos and lost luggage propel PIA into spotlight once again A pilot from Swindon said he was ‘appalled’ by the number of problems he encountered on a recent visit to Pakistan, with PIA airlines once again at the centre of the controversy. Four-hour delays, lost luggage, ‘terrible customer service’, and an overflowing toilet down the aisles, are just some of the issues 52-year-old Zafar Chaudhry says he was forced to endure when dealing with the airline. After travelling to Pakistan in April last year, he decided to recently report his nightmare story to the Asian Express after seeing a rise in incidents surrounding PIA. “I just felt that the standard of the airline, from the top of the organisation to the bottom, was so poor that I had to report it,” he said. “It was only the second time I have flown with PIA and how they handled all the issues of my trip was just appalling.” Recently, the South Asian airline

has come under a lot of criticism from passengers who have felt the service being offered to them is well below par. News of a pilot attempting to board the plane drunk last year, and a host of long delays, have proved detrimental to the airline’s reputation, which is often favoured by passengers flying from the UK, due to its direct flight to Pakistan. Mr Chaudhry, a pilot for 20 years, was flying out to Pakistan, as a passenger, on the 20th April last year when his first plane was delayed for four hours. After arriving in Islamabad he was then unable to locate any PIA staff to direct him to where he could get his connecting flight from, almost making him miss the plane. “I was looking for more than 20 minutes for a member of staff from the airline as I do not know the way around Islamabad airport at all,” he

explained. “I finally got directions from a member of security and thankfully caught my plane to Karachi.” Upon arriving at his destination, Mr Chaudhry was informed that his luggage had not been on the plane and would have to come back the following day to collect it. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said.“The plane could not carry everybody’s luggage, it was too small, so they just left it without even telling us. They offered no compensation, so I was wearing the same clothes I had been travelling in for two days. “I got given a number to call the following day which I did at around 2.30pm and got told to call back at 3pm. I phone them then, they said call back in ten minutes. “I did, and they said phone back in ten minutes again until eventually after doing that about five times I got told to pick up my luggage at 6pm.

“When I went back, I had to hire a car to get from my location to the airport, which was about 20 miles away, only to be told my luggage would be at the PIA base, at a different location.” Mr Chaudhry was finally reunited with his personal belongings yet his problems with the airline did not finish there. “On the way back to the UK, there were even more problems,” he explained. “The warm food we were offered was so cold it was uneatable and once again the staff were rude.” He added: “About 30 minutes before we were due to land, the toilet on board the plane had clogged up and the liquid from it had leaked under the door and was running down the aisle as we began our descent. “It smelt horrible but still nothing was done.” Despite a number of complaints

made to the airlines Mr Chaudhry was only offered £65 in compensation and 3,000 AirMiles, with terms and conditions attached. “I initially thought that’s great when I heard about the AirMiles,” he explained. “Only to then be told that they had to be used before the end of the year and a 30 day period had to be given before they were. Also they could not be used in conjunction with cash. “So I sat down to see where the 3,000 AirMiles could take me and they were literally useless. The cheapest one-way flight to Pakistan, in economy, was 11,000 AirMiles, so what I had been given was useless compensation.” Mr Chaudhry added that he had flown numerous times with other airlines, and ‘none of them are perfect yet they at least admit when they make mistakes and compensate for it’.

After a failed attempt at an honour killing at the hands of her family, Mona (Aiysha Hart) is forced to go on the run. Her family, desperate to save face, enlist the services of a bounty hunter (Paddy Considine) to search the streets of London to track her down and restore HONOUR to their family. With the DVD set to be released on 28th April, Aiysha Hart and Shan Khan took time out of their busy schedules to let audiences know a bit more about the highly anticipated thriller. Aiysha Hart plays Mona in the film • What can audiences expect from Honour? I think that, on one hand the viewer can expect an edge-oftheir-seat, fast paced thriller with some shocking and unexpected moments; whilst on the other hand I hope they will be both moved and enlightened by the extremely weighty and harrowing subject matter. It’s a film that will undoubtedly push audiences to think and discuss, and that’s what I believe makes it so powerful. I also hope it will be refreshing for people to see a British Asian film that isn’t a comedy and isn’t about arranged marriage.

• What were your thoughts when you first read the script? On the first audition I hadn’t been given the entire script yet but I knew it was a film about honour killing. It was incredibly exciting to me that someone (Shan Khan) had been brave enough to write about such a relevant and taboo subject. When I finally got the script and read it, I thought it was brilliant; a real page-turner. By that point I felt very attached to Mona and I really wanted the opportunity to tell her story. It’s rare to find empowering and interesting female roles, so I felt and still feel very fortunate to have got the part. • Your role is one which must be hard to research mentally at times. How has it been for you getting in the correct mindset of your character? I felt like I had quite a strong connection to Mona and that I understood her from fairly early on in the process, which made getting into character a lot easier. Shan was quite focused on me just going on this journey with her and not worrying so much about doing extensive research into honour killing facts and statistics, which the character herself probably wouldn't have known. So I kept a diary as Mona and built up her back-story, and then once we started filming, the isolation of living away from home combined

with a very intense filming schedule meant that becoming Mona came quite organically. • What's it been like working alongside names such as

Writer Shai Hussain on ‘Three Shades of Brown’ and more… Tell us about your background. In terms of culture, my parents are Indian and Muslim. I was born over here. My passport says I'm British, my tastes are pretty Indian and my name says I'm Muslim. I wouldn't say I'm completely one or the other, but there are definite influences from all three. I first fell in love with the arts whilst pursuing a Maths degree in Manchester, due to unforgettable support from the Contact Theatre, which was next door. After finishing, I went travelling where I discovered my love for writing that led me to doing an MA Screenwriting at the Northern Film School in Leeds. One of my feature film projects got to the finals of a competition called "The Big Pitch" in 2008 and attracted the attention of Gordon Anderson, the director of the first series of ‘The Inbetweeners’. Simple to say, there have been some real highlights in my career, but what I've always wanted to do is write about the British-Asian world I know without the melodrama, but equally without the sugarcoating. TV and Film is

still my ultimate goal to aim for as they're the most widely viewed formats, but until that day comes, I'm hoping ‘Three Shades of Brown’ will convince the gatekeepers that there is an audience for this kind of product. How did you come up with this storyline? The characters in my comedic stories are generally stereotypes. During my Screenwriting MA in 2005, I developed a sitcom set at the University of Manchester about eight very different students living in a halls of residence: a geek, a girl-next-door, a rude boy, a slut, a ruggerbugger, a goth, a hippy and a daddy's girl. For comedy, I feel the best characters are those that are fully exaggerated and the best way to break down stereotypes is by exposing them for just how silly they are. For ‘Three Shades Of Brown’, I felt it was due time that this was done for the British-Asian youth of today, and to also show that not all Asian guys are the same. I feel that due support for ethnic stories is still scarce for the British TV and film industries. But films like ‘Bend It Like Beckham’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘The Best Marigold Hotel’ show that there is real strength in the brown pound. It was through sheer exhaustion from rejection after rejection that, after slowly deliberating giving up writing altogether, I decided that if nobody else was going to give me a chance to prove myself, I'd create that chance myself. So, I went through all of my concepts and decided that ‘Three Shades of Brown’ would be the one I could most likely to justice on a tiny budget. How did you loop in the cast? Muzz Khan, who plays the rude boy Nas, I met over a creative forum website years ago. I was writing ‘Three Shades’ when I saw Muzz in Ishy Din's amazing theatre piece ‘Snookered’, and I instantly felt that I'd found my Nas. Similarly for Ravi, it was writing for Omar

Khan's character in the Zing TV soap ‘Cloud 9’, that I knew that Omar could sleepwalk the role. Thankfully, they both accepted to do it. Harry was trickier to cast as due to time logistics, the actor I primarily had in mind didn't work out. I put the word out on different forums that we were looking to audition the part, and luck came in the form of Navinder Bhatti. Rez Kempton, who worked with Navinder on the upcoming film ‘Amar, Akbar & Tony’ put us in touch, he auditioned, and he was perfect. I can't imagine anyone else in the role now. How have you funded this venture? Completely off my own back with the money I make DJing and doing extras work from time to time. Family members did offer to help me fund the film, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this off my own back - at least for the first one. No sponsors, no investors, no producers - at least for the first series, just so I can set the tone and the world that I always saw it. It isn't so much criticism I can't handle - it's the wait for approval. However, my executive producer, Pulkit Datta (based in New York) has always been at hand to give constructive criticism without destroying my vision, and huge kudos to him for his patience and his eye for detail. Everyone bar the sound recordist (who almost halved his wages) was paid expenses only for this, and some of the supporting roles even waived their expenses! I truly had a great, talented, patient and passionate team on board for this. Looking back now, I seriously can't wait to start production on series 2. The goal has always been to show that there's an audience for this kind of show. The world of the webseries is still growing in the UK, but it’s massive in the US at the moment. With the right product and the right niche, the web can do wonders, and Three Shades of Brown hopes to repeat the success of Humza

Arshad's ‘Diary of a Bad Man’. What has your role been in the production? In terms of what I did for the project, I produced, directed, financed, edited, wrote music for, location scouted, marketed, designed, took care of PR, and about to go into distribution. As a no-budget webseries, I tried to take care of what I can do personally as I hate asking people to work for free. I owe so many people so much for their advice and assistance; and, obviously thanks to the press… such as the Asian Express, who have given me such a great platform to get the word out there. I promised myself I wouldn't cry. (sob) Why did you decide to webcast? I had little luck with producers. One producer felt the flatmates-sitcom had been done to death. Another said the characters were very believable and well-written but couldn't warm to them. Another said they loved the upbeat dialogue but it didn't feel the right kind of project for them. Another said that she loved it, but had another similar sitcom in production. It was the final feedback that was the last straw really. I'd had so many experiences of concepts I believed turned down time and time again, just to see a similar idea pitched by a seasoned writer to get made two years down the line, that I was determined not to see it happen again. What have you learnt from making ‘Three Shades of Brown’? Whilst on my MA, I wrote an action thriller called ‘Eye for an Eye’ where two brothers fought each other on the other side of terrorism a kind of British remake of ‘Deewar’. Then ‘Britz’ came out. During the same time, I wrote ‘Small World’, my freshers-set sitcom set in Manchester. It was the script that bagged me an agent five years later, yet nobody would touch it. Then, when my agent started sending it out, we learnt that there was a little show called ‘Fresh Meat’ about to come out that was too similar. Then I thought I'd hit the jackpot with NBC Universal and my radio sitcom ‘Generasians’. After a year of development and getting through to the final round of commissioning with BBC Radio 4 twice, ‘Citizen Khan’ came out and it was history. I couldn't allow the same thing to happen to ‘Three Shades of Brown’. I hope the readers of Asian Express enjoy it.

Shan Khan – Writer/ Director • What can we expect from ‘Honour’? It is a very interesting film and one which will make you think afterwards. It is like the thrillers of the 70’s. Back in that time I feel that films were better at putting across messages whereas now they don’t really do that but rather focus on celebrity instead. Honour is more like a traditional thriller and will give you something more than the typical modern day film. Of course it is also very entertaining and has some fantastic talent acting in it.

• How long did the film take to direct? We began filming back in 2009 once we had established our cast and then it was probably completed in 2012. Since then we have just had to really wait for the right time to launch it, with budgets considered, and hopefully the wait will be worthwhile for everybody. • Where does your passion for film come from? I have always had a love for films since I was a young boy growing up in Scotland. My father owned a video shop and we would watch movies every day and he would tell me that movies are the ‘big thing’. I was in charge of the video shop at points when I was just 12-year-old and just fell in love with it all there and

then. We grew up in a small town as the only Asian family and it was an escape for me really. • What was Aiysha like to work with? Aiysha is a wonderful actress and a great person. A lot of people would just say that but she is extremely talented. For the role of Mona we must have interviewed around 200 people and we only heard from Aiysha because she was a friend of someone else who had come to audition and she thought she may as well have a go at it. Thankfully she did and from then she was our Mona. It is a very hard part to play, especially at her age, but she is a great actress and did the part justice.

SALT: The Silent Killer larmingly, almost everyone in the UK eats too much salt. Currently, the daily recommended amount of salt in the UK is no more than 6 grams (just a teaspoon!), whilst the current average salt intake is 8.6g (with many consuming more than this). Despite the recommended amount of salt being 6 grams, those with high blood pressure should be actively eating less than the specified amount. Excessive salt consumption is one of the largest factors contributing towards high blood pressure; though high blood pressure may not seem as serious as other illnesses, it can be a root cause of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, stomach cancer, osteoporosis and renal failure. Genetics can cause us to be particularly sensitive to too much salt and this is most definitely the case with South Asians. Various studies into South Asian health have determined that those of Indian/Pakistani/Bengali descent are at a higher risk of high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Shockingly, South Asians are 3040% more likely to die prematurely from heart disease in comparison to the rest of the UK population and they are six times more likely to have diabetes than the average UK population. In spite of these worrying statistics, reduction of salt in the diets of South Asians is very limited. Whilst the majority of the UK consume (and exceed) their recommended daily amount of salt from processed

foods, in the South Asian population, almost all of the salt consumed is added during cooking or at the table. The astronomical amounts of salt that the community have • unwittingly incorporated into their diet is masked by the variety of spices that also go into the common curry / fried snack.

A home from home O Are you close to the limit? I t’s always worthwhile to remind clients of the basics when it comes to bringing a claim in the courts and limitation dates are one of the fundamental considerations. The limitation issues of a case are crucial points to consider to prevent the possibility of a claim being time-barred. The law sets out deadlines for bringing claims (referred to as limitation periods) so that a claim cannot be brought too long after the cause of action arose. The law on limitation periods is set out in the Limitation Act 1980 which provides different deadlines for different causes of action. For example: • A claim founded on simple contract (a contract not contained in a deed) has a limitation period of six years from the date of accrual (or 12 years for a contract in a deed). • A claim in tort (a civil wrong) has a limitation period is also six years from accrual (the period is cut to three years for personal injury cases and one year for defamation cases). There are, however, certain situations where the time limit may be postponed until the Claimant discovers or could have discovered the relevant facts. Issuing proceedings stops time running for limitation purposes, therefore it is important to obtain legal advice on this point as soon as possible. Standstill Agreements If a limitation deadline is fast approaching, it may be worthwhile for the parties to enter into a Standstill Agreement. A Standstill Agreement

allows parties, by agreement, to suspend time for the purposes of limitation. It is important that a Standstill Agreement is clearly drafted and serves its proper intention otherwise the claim may nevertheless be time-barred. The risk of issuing prematurely In order to protect a Claimant’s position to prevent the claim from being time-barred, proceedings may be issued to prevent limitation from expiring. However, if the Claimant is then unable to formulate the claim properly, there is a risk that the claim could be struck out as an abuse of process. Save the date! When embarking on court proceedings, whilst it is important and encouraged to consider mediation and other methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution, it is crucial that clients do not allow negotiations as to possible settlement of the case to deter them from issuing proceedings in time. Little has changed in the laws governing limitation dates in recent years, although Lord Justice Jackson’s final report following his review of civil litigation costs included recommendations that have led to the preparation of new draft Pre-Action Protocols. However, it is not clear when these new and revised Protocols will be implemented. Watch this space! Mercedes tight-lipped about its SLC AMG deemed a ‘Porsche 911 Turbo contender’ With the SLS production ending this year the final details of the new SLC AMG are soon to be revealed Mercedes-Benz is still keeping tight-lipped about its Porsche 911 contender, rumored to be called the SLC, however spy shots gives us our best look yet at the sporty coupe. Production of the marque’s flagship sports car – the SLS will be ending in July this year, and what we hear is that development of the new SLC (codenamed C190) is steadily progressing. Some are suggesting that the new car could be called the Mercedes GT instead. From what we can tell, the SLC will wear a face similar to recent Mercedes products with large, LED-trimmed headlights, aggressive fascia air inlets and an upright grille. More importantly, the SLC's rump is coming into focus with its large hatch and integrated exhaust outlets, but you can also make out the shape of the

horizontally oriented taillights. There are still plenty of uncertainties about the S L C / G T, however its b e e n predicted that it will use a new 4.0-litre, modular V-8 with a twin-turbocharger setup.This engine is touted to deliver about 500 horsepower, pitting it against the mighty 911 Turbo. Two more engines will be available on the SLC/GT AMG, a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 and a Black Series version with a 6.2-litre V8 with just under 600 horsepower. According to sources, the new Mercedes-Benz is to be unveiled at the German Grand Prix later this year and will go on sale in 2015.

The 2008 DKR shares an unmistakable family resemblance with Peugeot’s road-going crossover, albeit with more muscular forms, and more imposing overall proportions that have been honed to meet the challenge that lays ahead. Its spectacular lines are the fruit of close cooperation between the experts at Peugeot’s Style Centre and their colleagues at Peugeot Sport’s Design Department, and the newcomer’s likeness with the production version is quite

astonishing! Far more than just another styling exercise, the 2008 DKR features an aggressive stance dictated by the technical constraints associated with its mission. Indeed, Peugeot Sport’s design team had to answer one particularly fundamental question at a very early stage concerning the new beast’s transmission: four-wheel or two-wheel drive? In the end, they’ve opted for an approach that was quite different to that of the competition. Given the off-road capability of twowheel drive transmission and its ability to run on sand, that’s the choice they ultimately went for. It enabled them to fit bigger wheels which also benefit it from more suspension travel. The 2008 DKR consequently sits on 37-inch diameter Michelin tyres (almost 94cm)!

These considerations naturally had a significant knock-on effect with regard to the work of Peugeot’s stylists, but the fourstrong design team rose enthusiastically to the challenge to pen the new Lion that will very soon take on the unique challenges posed by cross-country rallying. What lies beneath the bodywork remains a secret for the moment, but the 2008 DKR’s breath-taking forms are sure to cause a stir even before the new car starts to kick up dust as it begins to be put through its paces.

No, we’re not making belated April fools out of you guys, seriously. With enhancing the company’s sustainability credentials at the top of the agenda, Mini’s scientists, engineers and product designers have unveiled the new Mini Cooper T – the world’s first vehicle to be powered by a tea-leaf biofuel composite. Capable of covering up to 40 miles on a single cup, Cooper T certainly isn’t what you’d call thirsty. It boasts all the standard features you would expect, such as VVT, ABS and DSC, but also benefits from DAT or Dunk Avoidance Technology. This ingenious filtration system stops peckish owners and opportunistic passersby from inserting biscuits into the Mini T’s fuel tank in order to moisten their snacks.

The revolutionary new model, which is available in a variety of colours including ‘Chamomile Yellow’, ‘Red Bush’ and ‘Earl Grey’, is expected to cause a real stir in the motor industry when it’s served up later this month. Head of Cooper T engineering, Dr. Ivana Kuppa, said, “This particular project has been brewing for years. Our extensive research has shown that the nation’s favourite drink is also an ideal biofuel. Land Rover, the British brand synonymous with adventure, has revealed a long-term global partnership with Richard Branson’s pioneering commercial spaceline, Virgin Galactic. The ground breaking partnership was announced against the backdrop of SpaceShipTwo, the world’s first commercial passenger carrying spacecraft, together with Land Rover’s new Discovery Vision Concept vehicle. The announcement illustrates the commitment that both brands share to iconic design and engineering excellence and a desire to push the boundaries of travel for the next generation. Land Rover will base a fleet of vehicles at the Virgin Galactic test centre in the Mojave Desert, California and at its astounding operational New Mexico base, Spaceport America. The exciting announcement was

revealed in dramatic fashion on board USS Intrepid, a former aircraft carrier and now a museum dedicated to the exploration of sea, air and space and anchored on the Hudson River. Land Rover’s first act as exclusive partner was to bring a unique full-size replica of SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise to New York, where it joined the remarkable British Airways Concorde and its namesake Space Shuttle Enterprise upon the Intrepid. Revealed alongside SpaceShipTwo was Land Rover’s Discovery Vision Concept, a vision of Land Rover’s future family of Discovery vehicles. All eyes watched on as the last ball finally dropped into the 18th hole at Augusta National on Sunday as Bubba Watson came away with his second Masters Title. Unlike in 2012, when the American was forced into a play-off with South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen, Watson had all but clinched the title heading into the final hole. 20-year-old Jordan Spieth had looked like he may break Tiger Woods’ record for youngest winner of the tournament, yet a stuttering final day ensured the jackpot, the trophy and of course the jacket was Watson’s. Trailing by two shots after seven holes, the 35-year-old from Florida took advantage of Spieth’s consecutive bogies on the eighth and ninth, putting two birdies of his own to flip the Leaderboard on its head. The fan favourite held his nerve coming down the back nine, coming in at even par before celebrating with his family in true Augusta National style. “This one is a lot different,” proclaimed a teary-eyed Watson, as he

was helped into his jacket by last year’s champion, Adam Scott. “The first one for me, it's almost like I lucked into it. This one was a lot of hard work and dedication. “After giving away that jacket last year, I wanted it back. I told Adam we could just swap it back and forth every year. I never loved green so much,” added the American, who became the 17th player to win the Masters more than once. Spieth, meanwhile was forced to share second spot with Swede Jonas Blixt, after he carded his worst round of the tournament, despite it still being a par round. “That was fun, but at the same time, it hurts right now,” the young American said. “I wanted to get in contention on the back nine Sunday, but didn't come out on top. “Although it sits a little hard right now, I'll be back and I can't wait to be back. It was an incredible experience. It was so much fun, it really was. Even if I didn't show it there on the back nine, it was. “I took it all in, standing ovations for both of us to each green, it was a dream come true.”

Zahid ‘Magic Man’ Hussain turns pro!

Magic Man As it was determined, Zahid’s style is more suited to the pro’s plus the desire to fight for money and not for tin cups and brass medals - this was a defining factor. So, following a series of rigorous and renowned British Boxing Board of Control tests, probably the most stringent testing procedures in the world, including various MRI and MRA brain scans, eye and blood testing, a full physical body medical, and finally a stringent and gruelling interviewing process, Zahid turned pro.

Zahid, alongside his amateur stablemate Reece Cartwright, this year’s 2014 ABA Middleweight champion, passed and was accepted by the British Boxing Board of Control and consequently turned professional. Then began the fight preparation for their debuts. This involved training two to three times a day, a strict dietary regime, the relocation to various gyms in Manchester and Sheffield for tough sparring and learning of new techniques all under the observation of Brendan and Dominic Ingle and master trainer Joe Pennington. Training alongside the likes of World Title contender Kell Brook, the recently crowned European and British champion Kid Galahad, and the big punching Middle Weight prospect, Manchester’s Mark Heffron helped ensure the two fighters were at the required level to compete at this level and this sort

of company can only put The Magic Man and Reece Cartwright in good stead for the future. After the disappointment of Zahid’s first professional debut contest in Sheffield, which had been cancelled due to numerous factors, the debut was rescheduled for Saturday 5th April 2014 in Manchester at the Wythenshawe Forum. Zahid’s small following of loyal Yorkshire fans, travelled over the Pennines to support their man and boy were they in for a magical treat. The flamboyant Magic Man Zee entered the ring to rapturous applause and cheers from the crowd as if the Yorkshire man was a home fighter. Totally relaxed and focussed, he set about his work. For two rounds the selfproclaimed ‘Magic Man’ out boxed and out classed the tough Lithuanian challenger, Simas Volosinas from the off, with his stinging jabs, punching power and slick foot work. As the fight went on Hussain dished out punishing and hurtful combinations from all angles at high speed, whilst the tempo and pace of the fight were tremendous. His in and out tactics served him well and gave him a two round head start in the fight. However as the fight moved into the second half, the high pace started to take its toll on Hussain and Volosinas launched his attacks from the third round onwards catching the Magic One clean and hard for the first time, the shock of the punch rocking Zahids head back clearly. Volosinas, a veteran of 20 fights, and a boast of never being knocked out as a professional

fighter, almost lost that record as the Magic Man regrouped after his opponent’s perfect shot. Zahid came straight back with a booming right hand power punch and quickly switching stances to deliver a massive left hook followed by a three punch combination almost flattening the Lithuanian in his tracks but could not finish the job as time in the round ran out at the end of the third. By the fourth Hussain was tiring but so too was Volosinas due to the fast pace of the contest. But the Magic Man Zee kept Simas at long range, peppering him with quick jabs for a shut out 40 / 36 points victory over this tough Lithuanian campaigner. Interviewed after the fight at ringside Magic Man Hussain said: “It was a great fight and I loved every minute of it. But boy was he tough, credit to Simas he hung in there and just kept coming and coming and coming. “All the hard sparring and fitness training and preparation paid off. To be honest after the first round I

knew my skill set was far superior to his but this is professional boxing and I had to respect his power as he did catch me clean on the jaw in the third round. “However I proved I was well conditioned and was able to take his power shot. After that I stuck to the game plan which was to out box and frustrate him right to the last bell which I did clearly with my movement and punching. “I’m really happy with my first performance as a professional fighter and I felt good in there. “Now that I have got the first fight under my belt I want to fight on a regular basis building up to the big fights and continue as planned to my ultimate dreams being to win the British Featherweight title and also to fight in America, Las Vegas and New York like my idols Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Pauli Malignaggi. “This was truly a special night for me not only did I win but my stable mate Reece Cartwright, Leeds Middleweight, won his fight also beating a tough kid called

‘Focus on the sport’ Claims that football in Asia is suffering due to politically-led AFC Football in Asia is something which many sports fans in the continent just turn a blind eye to, focussing instead on the major bigspending European leagues. However, with the sport’s reputation constantly being reviewed by its ruling body, calls have now been made from the highest order to stop concentrating on the politics of the game and spend more time developing the sport. Earlier this week, Asia’s FIFA vicepresident, Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, made the comments in regard to the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) president, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. The criticism comes just days after comments from Sheikh Salman in a campaign for himself to be automatically elected as the next vice-president for FIFA’s Asian board. Prince Ali, who has held the position since 2011, said he believes such talk is only hampering the progress of football in the continent. “It is unfortunate that the direction taken by the AFC President and other AFC officials is one driven purely by politics instead of focusing our energies and valuable time on improving the game in Asia,” he said in an

open letter to the Asian football community. “[The AFC leadership should instead address] the myriad challenges that AFC faces in marketing, grassroots football, women’s football, transparency and accountability and the list goes on,” he added. Prince Ali, who is also head of the Jordanian FA, said that the AFC rejected the proposal last year, yet it had now resurfaced. “The very Congress that elected the current AFC President has made its decision on the matter at our annual Congress a year ago. “I am truly surprised that this proposal has resurfaced in the past few months, led vigorously by the current AFC President. “It is regrettable that the AFC presidency has spent so much time and energy over the past few days in Kuala Lumpur lobbying heavily for this proposal amongst Asian member association representatives, instead of working hand in hand for the development of football in Asia.” Sheikh Salman was elected as AFC President last May when he secured 33 of the 46 presidential votes available from AFC member associations in a lop-sided election. Zahid ‘Magic Man’ Hussain officially started the next chapter of his career and his journey as a professional boxer has well and truly begun. His disappointing ABA final defeat was due to a damaged hand, despite being odds on favourite to win the championship. This was a major blow and the nail in the coffin ultimately bringing to an end his successful amateur career. His team, Bauer Events, and his brother, Wahid ‘Waga’ Hussain, former undefeated ABU European Light Heavyweight Champion, elected and decided that it was time for Zahid to move on and turn professional.
