ALI FAZAL
THE DESI DUDE WHO MADE IT INTO THE ‘FAST AND FURIOUS’ FRANCHISE
A grieving father from Bradford returned from Saudi Arabia last week after completing a religious expedition on behalf of his son who tragically died in a car accident last year. On Friday 12th September 2014, 15-year-old Saliq Malik suffered serious injuries after the car he was travelling in was involved in an accident on Giplin Street, Barkerend. The teenager was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he later died of his injuries that same day. Now, his father, Amjad Malik, has returned from Mecca where he travelled to complete a special ‘Umrah’ on behalf of his son.

Zayn Malik’s first public appearance since his highly publicised split from One Direction came last week as the Bradford singer picked up the Outstanding Achievement in Music accolade at the annual Asian Awards. Joined on the red carpet by the likes of Bollywood Superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, renowned fashion designer, John Rocha, and cricket legend, Kumar Sangakkara, the Bradford singer was in good company as the spotlight shone on London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. Zayn’s accolade was the first-ever independent award he has achieved and also his first since leaving the world’s biggest boyband. Accepting his award from Naughty Boy, he said: “I'd like to thank my mum and dad, and I'd also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys I've ever met - everything I've done with them will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

TALENTED: Nine-year-old Laiba Khan won the ‘Out of this World’ competition thanks to her poem, ‘Winter is Mine!’
An aspiring writer is preparing to see her name published in a poetry book later this year after winning a national competition at just nineyears-old. Laiba Khan, from Killinghall, will be featured in the regional anthology from ‘Young Writers’ after triumphing in the ‘Out of this World’ project. Open to all primary school pupils aged between seven and 11, every entrant was given the creative freedom of writing about any subject they wanted to, writing and submitting the pieces at school. The young Killinghall Primary School pupil chose to write her poem ‘Winter is Mine!’ about the winter season and after waiting to hear back from the judges, she finally got the nod of approval last month. Head teacher at the school, Gill Edge, said she was ‘delighted’ for Laiba and hoped her success in the competition would help showcase the talented pupils in Killinghall. “I’m really pleased for Laiba to be recognised in this competition and she really deserves it,” she said. “I always hope all our children here enjoy their education and projects such as this really helps to showcase their abilities. “We always aim to encourage our children to celebrate their achievements so for Laiba to see her poem published in a book is

Bradford pupil clinches national poetry award fantastic.” Laiba received her ‘Young Writers’ certificate during a school assembly after hearing of her success in the competition through a letter which was sent home. At such a young age, she says she is yet to have a favourite author but explained what it was about writing that she most enjoyed. “I like that you can put your own imagination into a poem,” she said. “My teacher helped me start the piece and then the rest I did all on my own. “It took about half an hour to 45 minutes to finish before it was sent off. When I was told I had won, I was very happy.” Laiba’s father, Aurangzeb Khan, added that he didn’t know his daughter was ‘so talented’ and now wants to see her continue to progress in the field that she enjoys. “As a parent, I am very excited and happy to see my daughter achieve something so great at such a young age,” he said. “I wasn’t aware that Laiba was so good at writing and the vocabulary she used in this poem is just so impressive it shows she is extremely talented. “Hopefully this award will just be the first step on the ladder for Laiba and she will go on to achieve more in the field as she grows older.”

FINALIST: Jazmine Javeed will be one of 27 finalists competing for this year’s Miss Leeds crown on Sunday

Beauty and Brains
Aspiring lawyer hopes to wow judges in Miss Leeds contest By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A hopeful Miss Leeds finalist is aiming to show there is much more to beauty contests than looks this year as ‘inner beauty’ shines brightest in the city. 17-year-old Jazmine Javeed, from Leeds, is one of 27 finalists in this year’s Miss Leeds 2015 competition and will compete for the decorated tiara on Sunday 26th April. An aspiring lawyer, she is hoping to show there is much more to beauty competitions than just appearance, with contestants having to be ‘beautiful on the inside and out’. “People have this perception of beauty contests being all about looks and for women who care about nothing else but that,” she
said. “This idea is completely wrong. The girls I have met through this contest so far have all been so lovely and smart, with many of them currently studying at university. “I want to do my part in helping to show that to be successful in a contest like this, you have to be beautiful on the inside and the out. No contestants are allowed to have had any surgery and it is all about letting your inner beauty shine as much as anything else.” Jazmine first heard about the competition whilst holidaying in Dubai with her parents, entering through a Facebook advert. Two weeks later she was contacted by the organisers to attend an interview and after being selected from around 100 shortlisted entrants, she progressed into the final.
Competing against finalists who are all older that herself, Jazmine is the youngest contestant this year at 17-years-old and is also one of the only Asian entrants. “I entered this competition to improve my own confidence and I have really grown as a person and matured over recent weeks,” she said. “It is one of my main aims to get rid of any stereotypes surrounding Asian girls lacking confidence to enter contests such as these and we should be celebrating our diversity. “My parents have been really supportive throughout the whole process and I hope the community will get behind me in this competition.” Prior to the final, each contestant had to raise money for charity and Jazmine has been involved in bake sales, raffles and
even door-to-door collections as she fundraised for the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ charity. In the final itself, each woman will compete in several rounds including: talent, evening wear, a fashion shoot and personality. Jazmine says her unique skill will come as a surprise to many in the audience and hopes it could separate her from the crowd. “Growing up my dad always liked rap music and from a young age I have always just sung little pieces,” she said. “I have written a rap especially for the Miss Leeds contest and will be performing it in the final so I am really excited about that. Hopefully it will be enough.” This year’s Miss Leeds final will be held at Leeds’ The Met Hotel. If you would like to vote for Jazmine, simply text ‘Miss Leeds18’ to 63333.

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY Bereaved father carries out Umrah for teenage son who passed away FAMILY: Saliq sadly passed away in September 2014 following a car accident
HOLY: Amjad completed two Umrahs during his trip, one for himself and one for Saliq
Cover story continued “This whole experience has been amazing and it all came about after my sister had a dream where Saliq was wearing ihram (white robes) and was stood on a mountain where our Prophet used to go,” he explained. “She felt so strongly about this that she told me I must go complete Umrah for Saliq and make her dream come true. She funded the trip and it was an incredible experience.” Amjad set off on the spiritual journey on 22nd March, returning home on 11th April after completing the Umrah twice - first for himself and then in memory of Saliq. Comparing the two experiences, he said ‘they were worlds apart’ with the expedition for his son, ‘containing no obstacles’ throughout. “My own Umrah was really hard,” Mr Malik said. “Everything took a long time and the crowds were really busy. “Two days later, I began Saliq’s Umrah and it was a different experience completely. I felt as if I had my son’s energy and felt his presence with me
throughout it. “One experience occurred as I was approaching the Kaaba, one of our most sacred sites. It is usually the busiest place and you are going to be nudged and pushed because of the amount of people. “When I approached it for Saliq, I felt as if the crowds opened up and let me walk straight up to it. I kissed it and completed prayers for Saliq and family and friends back home.” Mr Malik has visited the holy site before in 2010 and had hoped to one day complete the visit with Saliq. Upon returning home, he now plans to take his whole family on an Umrah together within the next couple of years to share his experience with them.

Set sail for adventure
Adventurous children and adults with disabilities can make some waves next week at Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre. The centre, based at Yeadon Tarn, will be holding a disability open day on 28th April, which will give visitors the chance to use specially adapted equipment to try sailing and rafted canoeing. And those attending can also try out the centre’s unique artificial cave system, which is the only one of its kind in the country. Split over two levels, the indoor attraction allows people with and without disabilities to try their hand at caving in a safe environment. The completely flat bottom level allows wheelchair users and those with limited mobility to experience caving by using trolleys to propel themselves along.

Life’s a beach at primary school
Early years pupils at Bracken Edge Primary school helped to open their brand new play area earlier this week, alongside specially invited guests. The deputy executive member for children and families, and school governor, Councillor Jane Dowson joined staff, pupils and parents to officially open the ‘beach themed’ playground which includes brand new play equipment and a massive sand pit. Guests were entertained by a steel pan band. The school secured £10,000 funding from the Big Lottery Fund and invested a further £20,000 themselves to create a brand new outdoor play area which will inspire the children and help their educational development.
Rosemont refurbishments
Residents of Rosemont have been updated on the potential options for the future of the sheltered accommodation. As requested by the council, independent architects have been asked for their advice on possible solutions for the Bramhope building. The architects have assessed the site position and building layout and have discussed their findings with residents this week. The options presented by the architect include conversion of the entire building, conversion of part of the building with the remainder demolished to make way for new build homes for sale or starting from scratch by demolishing the existing building and replacing it with purpose built flats for older people.

A new campaign to encourage little changes to make a big difference to later lives is being launched by Leeds City Council. The oral health campaign will encourage families to look after the oral health of children with the aim of reducing a wide range of health problems which could face them in later life. Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England, but it is largely preventable. Leeds is targeting areas with highest amount of tooth decay in children to get smiles brighter. There are stark regional differences in oral health, with one in five of fiveyear olds with tooth decay in South East England contrasting with one in three in Yorkshire and the Humber, but there are even greater inequalities within local authority areas, including Leeds.
VOTE: The You Vote team have been out in Bradford spreading the message of voting and urging more Muslim voters to have their say in the upcoming elections
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Just by driving through Bradford it is clear to see that election season is upon us with many streets and gardens submersed in red, blue, yellow and every other colour of propaganda. However, despite a clear show of support in the form of banners and signs, it is at the polling stations that the real support counts. You can have your house painted in support of your favourite political party yet if you do not show up on the day and
Muslim community told to vote with feet not just voice
mark the correct box, have you really had an impact on the outcome of the votes? One demographic that has been lacking in its turnout rate in recent years are British Muslims with only 47 per cent of eligible adults estimated to have voted in the last General Election in 2010. Compare that figure with 65 per cent amongst the general population and there is clearly a missing link. But why is it that, statistically speaking, less than one in two people are making their vote count? One independent group of campaigners, known as
You Vote, are on a mission to not only answer this question but to turn the trend around and get Muslims voting. The non-profit British Muslim grassroots initiative provides the public with information they need to make informed decisions at General Elections, remaining completely impartial. In Bradford, local campaign volunteer, Shamsuddin Ahmed, has been out and about urging more of the city’s Muslims to vote and explained why it was so important. “Here in the UK, we may sometimes complain about politics but the fact
is that we have one of the best democracies in the world,” he said. “You have to get involved to have your say and that is a privilege more of us need to take advantage of. “For Muslims, it can be seen as a religious obligation to get involved with voting to become a fully fledged part of the community.” This year is the first time the You Vote team have been in Bradford, campaigning in the streets and driving around in an eye-catching car. Shamsuddin added that the response so far had been mainly positive yet there was still more work
to be done to achieve their goals. “I think some people are warming up to the idea of voting but we still need to do a lot more,” he said. “If we can raise just a bit of awareness amongst the Muslim population that would be great, and hopefully get more eligible voters to have their vote counted.” This year’s elections will take place on Thursday 7th May and you can find your local polling station by simply visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and entering in your postcode.

QED-UK calls for election clarity over minority needs A leading Bradford based national charity is asking politicians to remember the needs of ethnic minorities in the run-up to the general election. Over the past 25 years, the QED Foundation has been working with policy makers to improve the social and economic position of disadvantaged communities. Now, the charity has written to the leaders of eight political parties asking how they will work to give ethnic minorities more opportunities and a better standard of living. “We are particularly concerned about the barriers to progress of
the UK's 1.2million people of Pakistani origin,” says QED founder and chief executive Dr Mohammed Ali OBE. “We are calling on politicians to say how they will help these communities, where lives are often blighted by bad health, low educational attainment, poor employment prospects and substandard housing in neighbourhoods with high crime levels.” QED found that the policies of the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, UK Independence, Green, Scottish Nationalist, Plaid Cymru and Respect parties all contained some measures to
promote greater equality. However, it is concerned that manifestos and campaign literature did not explain how politicians intended to tackle the complex web of obstacles limiting the opportunities and life chances of the UK's British Pakistanis population. The country's second largest ethnic minority makes up a sizeable proportion of the electorate - over four per cent of the population of Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands according to the 2011 census, with London not far behind at almost 2.75 per cent. Highlighting the needs of the ‘forgotten’ prisoners
REPORT: Ishtiaq Ahmed and Sofia Buncy compiled the report into Muslim women in prison and were commissioned to do so by the Muslim Hands charity
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A revolutionary report about the needs of Muslim women in British prisons has been completed by a local Huddersfield charity as the lives of the ‘forgotten members of community’ are analysed before, during and after sentencing. The Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance (HPCA) was commissioned to undertake the testing project by international charity, ‘Muslim Hands’ and after interviews and case studies with direct and indirect stakeholders, the report was published. Released officially at an event in Briar Court Huddersfield, on Wednesday 22nd April, writers of the report, Sofia Buncy and Ishtiaq Ahmed, were joined by a host of speakers in front of more than 100 guests. The pilot was undertaken initially with the cooperation of HMP and YOI Newhall, women only facility, but later the remit of the project was extended to include HMP and YOI Askham Grange Prisons. Aimed at allowing a better understanding of the situation for Muslim women prisoners, Diane Pellew, Governor of
the two aforementioned prisons, says it has been a ‘pioneering’ project. “The connections that have been made with Muslim women in custody and the wider community through this project have been excellent,” she said. “This can only serve to strengthen the support in custody and resettlement work on release that ourselves and our partners undertake with Muslim women across these two female prisons. “I would like to thank both Muslim Hands and the Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance for the insight to make contact and take this valuable work forward. “It will inform our current and future thinking and will be of interest to other female establishments across the estate.” It is not only in the prison system that the women are reported to feel ‘shunned’ but also upon their release with the report stating a severe ‘lack of empathy’ from the Muslim community. It is therefore recommended that an integrated programme of training for all stakeholders is provided to ensure each past offender is offered the same chance of rehabilitation and
acceptance back into the community. Authors, Ms Buncy and Mr Ahmed, added that the difference in treatment towards women and men offenders in their communities is also one of worry and something that must be addressed. “We hope this report will be read and absorbed by the Muslim community so they can begin to address some of the challenges and hardships which Muslim women are experiencing,” they wrote in their foreword. “We need to recognise that our approach and treatment of Muslim male prisoners and their rehabilitation is fundamentally different in comparison. “Therefore, the ‘silent suffering’ of Muslim women in and post custody needs to be remedied. “At the same time we hope the report will be a valuable source of information for different providers. “We aim to enhance understanding of the issues and barriers facing Muslim women in custody so that providers will be more informed to take into consideration the needs of this specific group.”

The UK is among the least religious countries in the world, according to a new survey. In a global ranking of 65 countries, the UK came six places from last with 30 per cent of the population calling themselves religious. While 53 per cent of people said they were ‘not religious’, just 13 per cent said they were a ‘convinced atheist" and the remainder "did not know’. It compares to 94 per cent of people in Thailand who are religious and 93 per cent of people in Armenia, Bangladesh, Georgia and Morocco. At the bottom of the list was China where only six per cent of people say they are religious while 61 per cent say they are convinced atheists. It was followed by Japan, where just 13 per cent of people are religious, Sweden with 19 per cent, Czech Republic with 23 per cent, and the Netherlands and Hong Kong with 26 per cent. Jean-Marc Leger, president of Win/Gallup International Association, said globally an average of two-thirds of people still consider themselves religious. “Religion continues to dominate our everyday lives and we see that the total number of people who consider themselves to be religious is actually relatively high,” he said. “Furthermore, with the trend of an increasingly religious youth globally, we can assume that the number of people who consider themselves religious will only continue to increase.” Overall, those under 34 tend to be more religious than other age groups, as do those without a formal education but in general religious people are a majority in all educational levels. The poll was carried out by market research company WIN/Gallup International, which questioned 63,898 people - around 1,000 in each country - at the end of last year.

The Chancellor is the formal Head of the University, whose official duties are to confer degrees on graduating students, and to chair the University’s Court. The Chancellor also plays a key role in the University’s life as an ambassador for the institution in the UK and internationally. Mr Khan had been installed as the fifth chancellor back in December 2005, succeeding Baroness Betty Lockwood. Now the University’s Court has formally approved Kate’s appointment and she will be installed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Cantor at a future date. Kate took up the role of CEO of the SSP group in September 2013, following ten years as CEO of WHSmith. DNA swabbing in hunt for Beeston attacker
WANTED: CCTV footage of the attacker has been circulated on big screens across Leeds as the search continues
Detectives investigating the attempted murder and rape of a woman in Leeds are conducting a large-scale DNA swabbing operation as part of their hunt for the attacker. The victim, an 18-year-old woman, was attacked by the man as she waited at a bus stop in Beeston Road, near to the junction with Tempest Road, at about 10.40pm on Friday 6th March. She was dragged from the bus stop into a nearby garden and struck over the head numerous times with a large stone before being raped. She received serious head injuries and a fractured pelvis. Detectives from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team launched a phased DNA screening exercise in the days following the attack based on advice from national experts in offender profiling. The operation has seen officers visiting addresses to request a swab from anyone who broadly fits the description of the offender. This work has been running in phases which have targeted zones moving increasingly outwards from the scene of the attack. So far officers have visited 1,100 addresses, spoken to 3,000 people and taken swabs from more than 250 men
aged between 18 and 30. The process is non-intrusive and simply involves a swab similar to a cotton bud being rubbed on the inside of the person’s cheek to gather cells from which a DNA profile can be obtained. Those samples are then being compared to the offender’s DNA profile that was recovered from the scene of the attack. Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, who is leading the investigation, said: “The offender’s movements on the night of the attack and the work we have been doing with experts in crime profiling still strongly suggest the attacker has a link to the Beeston area. “This mass swabbing operation is just one aspect of the investigation but it is vitally important for us to be able eliminate as many potential suspects as possible. “We are working in targeted phases at the moment and will continue to use this tactic more widely as the investigation continues. “The vast majority of people we have approached have been happy to assist us and I think this in part due to the very strong feeling there is out there that this man must be caught and taken off the streets as soon as possible.
“The fact that we have a full DNA profile for the offender means that nobody has anything to fear about being wrongly implicated or telling us about anyone they have suspicions about.” As part of ongoing efforts to keep the appeal for information at the forefront of people’s minds, mobile video display vehicles have been touring key sites in Leeds since last weekend.

Mosque invests in technology for teaching of Islam Cross-platform application takes faith ‘on-the-go’ An innovative mobile ‘app’ was officially launched in Bradford last week, as a new dimension of technology was introduced for followers of the Islamic faith. The Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam, also known as the Bradford Grand Mosque, developed the hybrid cross platform application, alongside an app developer, as a way of allowing followers of the faith and those in the wider community to learn more about their religion. The app is designed to pull live content directly from the iconic mosque and keep the nation up-todate with the latest events, religious teachings as well as daily prayers. Ataa-ur-Rahman, the app developer, says the digital tool has been a long time coming and was really pleased with the final result. “The app is a great introduction TECHNOLOGY: Members of the Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam gathered for the official release of the app last Friday
to the new digital platform,” he said. “Nearly half of the population now embrace modern technology and as a mosque we always try to work with communities and find effective ways in communicating with them. “This app is the perfect way to teach people our religion. The design of the app has had a lot of input from the local mosque media committee. We have been developing and trailing this app for over a year now and it is time that people could see this beneficial app for themselves.” The app brings together several knowledge elements of Islam including the Holy Qur’an, poetry in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, and intriguing critique interpreting the true message of Islam in a contemporary manner.
DOWNLOAD: The Bradford Grand Mosque free app is downloadable in both the Apple and Google Play store for mobile and tablet devices
The app is not only aimed at the Muslim community but has also been developed as a platform for non-Muslims to engage with Islam as a religion and learn about other’s teachings and beliefs. In 2014, a team of volunteers came together to begin developing the app directly from the largest Mosque in the UK and Chairman of Bradford Grand Mosque, Mohammed Riaz said he was delighted to see its official launch on Friday. “The app is a great addition for Bradford Grand Mosque,” he said. “We are showing people what our religion is about and that is through modern technology. “We launched the app in a small conference on Friday 10th April and hope people will download it and use it on a daily basis.”

SUPPORT: Fourteen students were awarded a £1,000 scholarship to help them with their studies
Kulfi Ice... What is Kulfi? Kulfi is the south asian version of ice cream. The unique flavour of kulfi comes from the boiling process - where reactions between the milk sugars and milk proteins cause it to become caramelised. This flavours the milk and reduces it to a fudgey mass which can be used as a 'plain' flavour, or more often, is enhanced with fruits, nuts and other flavourings then frozen around a stick.

Fourteen local students will benefit from scholarship awards this year as they become the first members of their families to attend university. Young academics from Leeds Beckett University were each issued with £1,000 funding through the Bright Futures Scholarships to help with their studies in the city. Amongst the group is Nuha Khan, a first year Law student who, like her peers, is pioneering the way for her family. She was selected on her academic merit and is joined by aspiring sport scientists, computer animators and much more. Professor Susan Price, Vice Chancellor at the university, said all the students had shown great ‘potential’ and deserved the extra support. “We are committed to providing the highest quality student experience and opportunities for all talented individuals,” Prof Price said. “These scholarships make a significant difference to the
students who receive them, helping to support their studies. “Congratulations to our brilliant students selected for this year’s scholarships, all of whom have all shown great commitment and potential. We are very grateful to everyone who has supported our Bright Futures scholarships through their donations.” All funding for the scheme is provided by Leeds Beckett graduates who are reinvesting in the educational establishment that helped them achieve their degrees in the past. BA (Hons) Events Management student Niki Gill said she was delighted to be receiving the scholarship and would be using the funding to help purchase textbooks, stationery and a printer. Speaking about her future aspirations, she added: “I have always had an interest in the arts and after university I hope to have a career running events within the arts industry. “My degree is definitely going to help prepare me for that and this scholarship will aid me in reaching my full potential.” STUDY: Nuha Khan is the first member of her family to attend university and is currently studying Law at Leeds Beckett University

‘Take seven steps out’
Leeds City Council has launched an innovative new campaign this week to encourage people who smoke to ‘Take 7 Steps Out’ of their home to protect children from the dangers of second-hand smoke. StepaRoo, the campaign’s kangaroo mascot, was in the city this week to take children across seven musical steps highlighting the need to be at least seven steps away from homes when smoking. Parents are also encouraged not to smoke in confined spaces such as a car, when children are present. StepaRoo was joined by the Take 7 Steps Out team who have been speaking to parents across Leeds about the dangers of second-hand smoke, which is responsible for over 300,000 GP consultations and approximately 9,500 hospital admissions each year in the UK.

Community ‘in shock’ Lessons ‘must be learned’ over Syria-bound teens A community champion from Dewsbury says the disappearance of two ‘quiet boys’ from the town must act as a catalyst for greater education in the area about the threat of extremism. Farook Yunus, previously headteacher of the Zakaria Madrasah in Saville Town, which both missing Hassan Munshi and Talha Asmal attended, knew the boys well and regularly spoke with them near his own residence. The news of their decision to flee home to join up with Islamic State insurgents came as a ‘huge shock’ according to Mr Yunus, adding the whole community had failed them. “They were both just quiet boys who would go to mosque to pray as so many youths around here do,” he said. “When the news of them travelling to Syria broke, there was just a feel of shock around this whole community. “We’d heard of these incidents happening elsewhere in the country but had never expected it to happen here. Everyone is now thinking ‘what went wrong’ and ‘how can we stop this happening again?’.” Mr Yunus currently works with a number of young people in the area alongside the award-winning youth group, Kumon Y’all, and says the ‘key’ to eradicating the threat of extremism in the future relies on ‘communication’. At Kumon Y’all, the topic of extremism was discussed as recently as last week, yet Mr Yunus adds that it is not only children who need educating. “Engaging with the youth,
through projects such as Kumon Y’all, is key to ensuring these incidents do not happen again,” he continued. “In that same sense, as much as an adult can teach a child about online safety, the children also play a role in teaching us. “Online grooming from extremists is a thing which did not necessarily effect the previous generation so we are all learning about this new threat all the time.” Meanwhile, pictures of the two fleeing 17-year-olds were released for the first time on Thursday last week as the community continues to react to the news. The families of both boys issued a joint statement saying they remain in ‘profound shock’ as West Yorkshire Police continue to work with the North East Counter Terrorism Unit. Their full statement read: “Our number one priority is to get Hassan and Talha back home with their families and we implore anyone who may have any information whatsoever to get in contact with the police. “Naturally, we are in a state of profound shock and are trying to come to terms with the predicament we find ourselves in and we hope and pray that no other family finds itself in our situation. “These were just two ordinary Yorkshire lads who enjoyed the things that all young people enjoy at their age - both Hassan and Talha had a promising future, as an apprentice and an A-level student respectively, and we are

BUSY: Thousands turned out in Bradford and Leeds to take part in the annual Vaisakhi celebrations
Happy Vaisakhi!
The site of Britain’s streets being overtaken by a vibrant sea of orange can only mean one thing - the Vaisakhi 2015 celebrations are upon us. Held every year to mark the founding of the Khalsa, this year’s processions involved millions of people across the world and is one of the holiest occasions in the Sikh calendar. On Sunday 12th April, processions (called Nagar Kirtans) were seen in Leeds and Bradford, with followers of the faith marching through the streets, singing holy songs and waving the Nishan Sahib flag. Men, women and children joined in the celebrations, many dressed in their best
clothes, as thousands turned out across the two cities. The celebration of Vaisakhi takes the form of continuous reading of the Sikh Scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, over a period of three days. That is followed by the recitation of sacred hymns before the service ends with a final prayer for the good and well-being of the whole of humanity, and the serving of sacramental food. In Bradford, this year’s procession began at the Ramgarhia Sikh Gurdwara, passing the city’s other four temples before returning to its start point with hundreds in attendance. Amongst those who led the procession at different
checkpoints was Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Airdar Balbir Panesar Singh Ji. Accompanied by other senior officers, Mr Singh guided the Sikh faithful past the Cathedral Church of St Peter showing communities uniting on the holy day. Meanwhile in Leeds, similar scenes were seen across the local gurdwaras. Member of the city’s Sikh Temple’s managing committee, Prem Singh Duggal, explained previously what the celebrations meant to him and how it helped unite local residents. “It is an important annual celebration which marks the anniversary of the
Vaisakhi message from the Prime Minister
“I send my best wishes to everyone in India, Britain and around the world celebrating Vaisakhi. “I know this is an incredibly important time for the Sikh community as families and friends come together to commemorate the birth of the Khalsa and give thanks. From Southall to Sunderland, from Ottawa to Amritsar Sikhs around the world will be marking Vaisakhi with vibrant parades and celebrations with homes, Gurdwaras and entire neighbourhoods bursting into life with decorations and colour. “Vaisakhi also gives us a chance to celebrate the immense contribution of British Sikhs, who have enriched our country for over 160 years. Whether it is in the fields of enterprise or
business education, public service or civil society Britain's Sikhs are a success story and model community. “And I see this contribution every day, all around. Like at the magnificent Gurdwara Sahib Leamington and Warwick, where I saw for myself the values of Sikhism - of compassion, peace and equality - in practice. And across the country I see how Sikh and Asian businessmen and women are boosting the economy by creating jobs and opportunities. But this contribution is not just a recent thing it goes back many, many years and was never more starkly demonstrated than 100 years ago during the First World War. “Just last month we commemorated the Indian soldiers many of whom were Sikh who fought bravely

alongside the Allies in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in Northern France. I pay tribute to those men who travelled far from home and who fought and died with their comrades in the fight for freedom. We will never let their sacrifice be forgotten. “So at this important time, let us commemorate the birth of a great religion let us give thanks for everything the Sikh community does for Britain and let us celebrate the successful multi-ethnic, multi-faith democracy country that we are. “Wherever you are, I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Vaisakhi.”

Taste of South Asia
Food lovers get tucked in for the kids A Jamie Oliver chef, three courses of delicious south Asian cuisine and entertainment from one of Yorkshire’s top acts is just a ‘taste’ of what you can expect to see at Bradford College’s fundraising event this week. On Thursday 16th April, students from the college will bring the ‘Taste of South Asia’ to the new Grove Restaurant, as they attempt to raise funds for Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity. Students, Chris Hanson, Sanaa Benlemaallem, Lorraine Ndlovu, Mateusz Tomczak and Kristine Zviedre, from the Foundation Degree in Travel and Hospitality Management, are the team behind the project. Funds raised through the dinner will go towards paying for state-ofthe art equipment for critically ill babies, children and teenagers, as well as play, rest and therapy facilities.
Chris explained: “We all came up with ideas and I suggested holding a charity dinner as I had previously met Naz Rafiq, a fundraising volunteer for the charity. I thought it would be a great opportunity for all of us to help raise money for such a worthy cause.” In November 2014 Naz won Bradford’s Volunteer of the Year Award for her tireless work to help parents and families of babies born prematurely. She added: “I do a lot of volunteer work for the charity because my son unfortunately passed away seven years ago with Congenital Myopathy. “The experience has made me quite passionate about trying to help support other parents who find themselves in similar circumstances.” Guests from across the Hospitality and Travel industry and the general public attending the

Bradford College students will work alongside Mateusz to freshly prepare and cook the outstanding menu for diners during the course of the evening with tickets for the event costing £20. Hospitality lecturer at the college, Clare Dodsley, has been overseeing
the event and praised the enthusiasm of the group. “The students have all assessed their individual skills and are contributing their unique attributes to the event,” she said. “They have worked well together so far and the event is set to be a success. It will hopefully generate a substantial donation for a local charity close to the students’ hearts.”

FAITH: Imams from across the country gathered in London for the launch of ‘Haqiqah’
HAIR, BEAUTY & SPA
Beauty Top Tips Recipe for Whitening, Scars & Blemishes!
This recipe can be used on both the face and the body and is recommended 1-2 times a week. It is ideal for rough spots like feet, knees, elbows and hands. To use on the face, this scrub works wonderfully for those with acne-prone skin. But, of course, the entire body can benefit from a lemon and sugar exfoliation that leaves skin soft and insanely smooth. Indulge in this scrub from head to toe! Lemon & Sugar Face & Body Scrub Ingredients: 1 Tbsp Sugar 1 Tbsp Lemon juice Olive oil (just enough to form a paste) Honey (optional) Directions: Add lemon juice and olive oil in to a bowl and mix together. Add the honey and whisk or stir quickly until the ingredients bind together into a medium thick consistency. Add in the sugar and mix. If you sense that there is not enough sugar to get the scrubbing done, add a bit more. This is purely up to personal preference. Tips: You can add or subtract the amount of olive oil and honey that you use depending on how thick you want your scrub to be. How to Use: As a face scrub: Cleanse face prior to application (remove makeup etc). Apply to entire face with gentle circular motions. Leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse with cool water. Moisturize with your favorite moisturizer. This scrub is ideal for people who suffer from breakouts and acne as all of the ingredients are highly beneficial to acne prone skin. Lemon tightens pores and evens out the skin tone, sugar removes dead skin cells and cleans pores, olive oil heals acne scaring, and honey prevents future breakouts. *Be cautious of using on open wounds as the lemon may sting. As a body scrub: Apply to body, paying extra close attention to elbows, knees, feet and hands (nails and cuticles especially) and rub in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse. Enjoy the silky softness of your impossibly smooth skin.

‘The Reality’ of ISIS
Imams launch digital magazine A Leeds-based imam was joined by leading clergymen from across Europe in London last week as the struggle to reclaim their faith from those who wish to tarnish it, went digital. Qari Asim was one of many imams present at the launch of a new digital magazine called ‘Haqiqah’ - launched in support of a wider drive by Muslims everywhere to ‘reclaim their online space’. Haqiqah, which translates into ‘In Reality’, has been developed with contribution from Imams and scholars as a direct response to the threat of online radicalisation and extremism. The magazine will deliver a clear and positive message for readers with information that they can share easily across their social media network. Highlights include a section providing ‘correct’ context to specific verses of the Quran, which have been regularly twisted in extremist material. Shaukat Warraich, Chief Editor of Imamsonline.com, an organisation providing a voice for Islamic religious leaders, and host of the Imams Online
Digital Summit, said: “The magazine ‘Haqiqah’ which translates as ‘The Reality’ is aimed at young people and will counter the extremist narrative used by groups such as ISIS. “We’re turning the tide - though we still have a way to go, we know that by taking efforts to support and mobilise the huge online Muslim population we will eventually drown out the violent voices.” Leeds Makkah Masjid’s Qari Asim, Senior Editor of Imamsonline.com and contributor to the magazine, added: “We are reclaiming the online space, but we need absolutely everyone to get involved in this effort. “So this is a call to log on, get informed, and share the magazine with all your friends and family online.” The summit was honoured by the attendance of various highly respected Imams including, Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, President of the Forum for Promoting Peace, and Hamza Yusuf, leading US Imam and co-founder of California based Zaytuna College.
“We’re turning the tide - though we still have a way to go, we know that by taking efforts to support and mobilise the huge online Muslim population we will eventually drown out the violent voices.”
Investing in youth Nursery reopens after expansion OPEN: Councillor Jane Dowson helps Aaliyah Canavan, Marley Tavares, Darnell Amo-Okyere and Ikejesupo Alabi reopen the nursery
The availability of free childcare in Leeds expanded last week as Burmantofts Community Nursery reopened its doors following the completion of major building work. The nursery, which provides free places to eligible two-year-olds across the city, received an investment of £365,000 from the City Council to extend and remodel its existing premises, creating an extra 63 places. With increased demand for the services in the area, it was a welcome expansion and on Wednesday 22nd April, it was officially reopened with the council’s deputy executive member for children and families, Councillor Jane Dowson, on hand to cut the ribbon with some of the children. Invited guests were given the opportunity to look around and meet with nursery staff. “Evidence shows that two year olds benefit greatly from access to a nursery place,” Cllr Dobson said. “It prepares them for school so that they arrive ready to start learning and get the very best from the education system. “Here in Leeds we work closely with childcare providers like Burmantofts Community Nursery to ensure that children have the best start in life. “Making the most of the free places for two year olds also enables their parents to access training or employment opportunities.” The Burmantofts extension has doubled the size of the nursery, which offers a range of learning opportunities, set out in the Early Years Framework including IT, as well as great outdoor play spaces and a purpose built sensory room.

‘Find them for my son’ APPEAL: Younus Adam has run the Texaco garage on Walkley Lane for 25 years and wants the public to help findthe two men involved in a robbery at the services last month
TARGET: It is the first time in the 25 years of ownership under the Adam family that the Texaco garage has been ‘held up’
“This incident took place at a busy time of day, and I am sure that someone will have witnessed some or all of what happened.”
Service station owner appeals for help in finding store robbers
A petrol station owner in Heckmondwike says he wants to see ‘justice’ brought against two men who threatened his only son with a knife in a terrifying robbery last month. Younus Adam has run the Texaco Services on Walkley Lane since it was opened more than 25 years ago and has never been the victim of a robbery in his 40 years in the industry. However, on Thursday 26th March at around 3.12pm, Mr Adam’s 28-year-old son, Aamir Adam, who works at the family business, found himself fighting off knifewielding thieves. His father said: “I heard about the robbery at about half past three when my son phoned me and I was really shook up. “I was told two men in motorbike helmets came into the store and held a knife right up to Aamir (Mr Younus’ son), making demands for
cash and threatening him. It was just shocking to hear. “Aamir is my only son and I would not know what to do if anything ever happened to him. “This kind of incident has never happened to me and to see it in this area came as a shock to all the local residents. Their support through this has been really helpful and they have been very supportive.” After filling their motorcycle with fuel, the two suspects approached the till at the Texaco garage with what is believed to be a kitchen knife and made demands to Mr Aamir Adam for cash. They made off with an amount of money on the motorcycle in the direction of Heckmondwike after the employee managed to escape the premises PC Nicole Senior of Kirklees District Robbery Team, says that due to the timing of the incident, people
may have been passing by at the time of the robbery and seen something which could help the investigation. She said: “This incident took place at a busy time of day, and I am sure that someone will have witnessed some or all of what happened. “I would urge them to get in touch so we can bring the offenders to justice.” Suspect one is described as white, chubby, in his 20's, and was wearing an orange coloured helmet. Suspect two is described as mid 20's, slim build and approximately 5"8" tall, whilst a red motorcycle has been recovered. Anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw anything suspicious or witnessed the incident is asked to contact PC Nicole Senior at Kirklees District Robbery Team on 101 quoting crime reference 13150121354.

Training pays off for youth Young people from across Bradford were awarded with a host of certificates last week as a local youth centre recognised the ‘tireless’ efforts of many of its members. Whether it was out-ofwork individuals wanting to gain a new skill, or young employed workers, 42 certificates were handed out in total by the Bangladeshi Youth Organisation (BYO) to those who had completed a range of courses hosted by the charity. Courses included first aid training, food hygiene, ICT and study support amongst others, culminating in a day of recognition on Thursday 9th April. David Green, leader of Bradford Council, was on hand to present the awards to the recipients alongside Peter Horner, of Young Lives Bradford. Mohammad Joynal, project manager at the BYO, praised all those who collected their accolades last week, adding how important it was for young people to have access to such training courses. “The presentation event was a fantastic way of rewarding these young
people who have taken it upon themselves to achieve official accreditations which will help them in their working lives,” he said. “Many of those involved in today’s ceremony required the certificates, such as food hygiene, to achieve what is needed for a job in that field so it is great for them to finally get their award. “So many people have done fantastic work throughout these courses and I am certain their new skills will prepare them for a competitive job market.” Mr Joynal added: “Some recipients have also been out of work for a long time so to have an event like this, where we can bring a bit of hope and allow them to achieve something physical is really important.” The idea for the presentation ceremony was only thought up around a week prior to the event, yet despite such a short turnaround time, around 200 people gathered at the BYO offices in Manningham. Following its success, Mr Joynal confirmed that he would like to run similar events in the future and hopes for a repeat success.

The University of Huddersfield is already renowned for its courses and research within industry, and is now sharing that knowledge with India’s Institute of Hotel Management-Aurangabad (IHMA) after establishing exciting new links. IHM-A students studying Ba(Hons) Hotel Management will now have the option, in the final year of their degree, to come to the UK for a year-long programme of study in Huddersfield within the Business School. Students from the Ba(Hons) Culinary Arts course will have the option to come for six months. “This collaboration now provides students with the perfect opportunity to combine academic study with global experience in
From India to Huddersfield hospitality,” said Professor Colin Bamford who has been leading negotiations with the Institute and has made regular visits to the IHMA as a University ambassador. “These two unique degrees – the only ones of their kind – will give the advantage of an international honours degree along with the
opportunity to widen their personal experience of what is a massive global business. “The domestic market also continues to exhibit year-by-year growth, consistent with India’s emergence as the third largest economy in the world by 2030. “Those who choose to come to
the UK will be in a unique position to benefit from study at the University of Huddersfield, which has been rated by QS stars as a ‘5star university’ for internationalisation and teaching excellence. “They will also gain experience of a different culture in the process and invaluable knowledge for their
hospitality careers,” he added. Initial links between the two institutions were created 18 years ago when the University of Huddersfield provided ongoing validation for the IHM-A’s designed and delivered courses. The first consort of students from the IHMA will arrive in the autumn of 2016.

Fraudfighting wallets Students take up challenge of defeating bank card fraudsters As the threat of credit card fraud and theft continues to grow across the country, the fight against the menace is being spearheaded right here in Leeds by a group of enterprising students. 21-year-old Ibbe Raja, has teamed up with his brother, Jalil, and friend, Sam Andrews, to create ‘Vinco’ – an ultra-thin wallet which protects against contactless bank card theft. As part of the project, the Leeds Beckett University student has now launched an online crowd-funding campaign in a bid to raise more than £3,000 to manufacture and sell the wallets and is already making headways to that target. If the amount is met by the deadline, the trio will receive the public’s pledged cash which so far stands at around 60 per cent of their fundraising target. Ibbe explained: “Our Vinco wallet was made to keep your money portable and, more importantly, safe. “The fact is, almost all wallets are prone to RFID (Radio Frequency ID) skimming, and we were inspired to create a product which protected against this crime after one of our friends was the victim of this form of theft. “Not only is Vinco thin and secure, its stylish design makes for a discreet yet RFID-proof wallet. Weighing just 30 grams, it'll fit into any pocket unnoticed and can hold up to seven cards and a few folded cash bills. It will also be available in a range of colours.” The wallet has already been trialled, tested and proven to protect against RFID signals which is a form of contactless bank card theft. An RFID scanner has also been used on Vinco and has not been able to read any cards whilst the tough material, Tyvek, ensures that bank cards and cash are kept dry. The wallet is
also designed to grip its contents tightly, to stop bank cards falling out. Ibbe added: “We have a lot of faith in this product and hope that the public get behind us with our crowd-funding bid. Vinco is designed, stitched and shipped locally here in Leeds, so customers will get a wallet that incorporates the true sentiment of British values. “Vinco will be packaged and shipped by Clubit, an online retailer and wholesaler. Clubit was founded by a former Leeds Beckett student in 1999 and I am currently undertaking my University placement year with the company. “If we are successful with this crowd-funding bid, everything is already in place for us to begin manufacturing, selling and shipping out Vinco wallets worldwide.” The crowdfunding campaign is being hosted by American site indiegogo.com, which gives creative projects in need of a cash injection an online platform to garner public funding within an allocated timeframe. PROTECTION: Ibbe Raja, from Sheffield, has developed the Vinco wallet to protect against bank card theft and fraud

Fairway Prestige Hire...Drive... All at Sea Believe he principle of ‘joint liability’ is a legal concept whereby two or more individuals who have acted to cause damage are jointly liable to the claimant for that damage. However as the case of Sea Shepherd UK –v- Fish & Fish Ltd demonstrates, the finding of joint liability will very often be based upon the particular facts or set of circumstances of that individual case. When a person commits a tort (a civil wrong causing loss or harm to another), they may be found to be liable with others for the same act or omission. Joint liability, or tortfeasance, has two main requirements: 1. There must be a common design to the tortious acts done by one or more of the alleged joint tortfeasors; and 2. The other alleged tortfeasor itself did acts in furtherance of the common design. Accordingly, each tortfeasor has joint liability for the tort committed. This case concerned two towing vessels belonging to Fish & Fish which were towing cages containing live bluefin tuna to its fish farm. One of the vessels was rammed by another vessel belonging to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) called the “Steve Irwin” as part of their Operation Bluerage campaign. A cage was damaged and approximately 33 tonnes of the total catch of 64 tonnes of fish were released into the sea by divers. Fish & Fish sued SSCS and Sea Shepherd UK (SSUK), a subsidiary of SSCS, for damages relating to trespass to and/or conversion to its property. SSCS did not have a presence in the UK, therefore SSUK who are a charity of SSCS and the registered owner of the Steve Irwin, were joined to the action as a tortfeasor. At first instance, the Admiralty Court had to consider whether SSUK was liable as a joint tortfeasor for the torts committed. The Court found that they were not to be considered jointly liable for the acts committed as they had not
T
joined with SSCS in a common design to carry out the acts and therefore they were not liable for the damage. The Claimants had relied upon some advertising material soliciting payments to SSUK in support of Operation Bluerage; the Claimants contended this was evidence of their common design with SSCS. However, the Court concluded that the mailshot had been designed, organised and paid for by SSCS and that the vessel Steve Irwin had at all times been in their possession and control. He dismissed the claim. The Claimant appealed. On appeal, SSUK were held jointly responsible. It was stated that SSUK’s involvement was sufficient in support of the common design, even if their involvement was minimal. SSUK then appealed to the Supreme Court. The central point at issue was whether SSUK’s contribution to the common design, widely considered to be minimal, was enough to consider their efforts a furtherance of the common design and therefore that they should be jointly liable. The Supreme Court, by majority, restored the order of the Admiralty Court and found that SSUK were not joint tortfeasors. They found that SSUK’s involvement had been de minimis i.e. it had not been substantial enough to be considered a furtherance of the common design. Interestingly, all the Judges were unanimous on the law of joint liability but a unanimous decision could not be reached once the law was applied to the individual facts of the case. This type of liability is particularly fact sensitive and, ultimately, as can be seen in these circumstances is likely to be a matter of judgment. We at Blacks Solicitors have a specialist team dealing with all aspects of disputes and can expertly advise on the merits of joining other parties to an action.

Hatton Gardens robbery By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
New pictures reveal how thieves made off with millions BOXES: Upon discovery of the raid, security boxes were found strewn across the floor
ACCESS: The hole, measuring 25cm high by 45cm wide, was drilled through 50cm of reinforced concrete and will have taken hours to complete
As detectives continue to investigate one of the biggest jewellery heists Britain has ever known, new images have been released which show exactly how the thieves pulled off their multimillion pound raid. Perhaps most notable of all the photos are the images of the hole which the suspects drilled to gain access to the vaults. Measuring 25cm high by 45cm wide, the thieves used a heavy duty drill with a diamond tip, called a Hiltu DD350, for several hours to make it through the 50cm thick reinforced cement wall. From there, 72 boxes were emptied and their contents taken, equating to millions of pounds worth of valuables. Upon discovery by police, the vault was covered in dust and debris whilst the floor was strewn with discarded safety deposit boxes and numerous power tools, including an angle grinder, concrete drills and crowbars. Police are continuing to investigate as to why only 72 boxes were targeted out of the 999 held in the vault, and are still attempting to contact all the boxes owners.
Detective Superintendent Craig Turner, head of the Flying Squad, said: “We have now completed our forensic examination of the scene. The hours of forensic work and inquiries have been vital in order to ensure we are able to exploit all investigative opportunities to their fullest extent and assist us in identifying those individuals responsible. “We appreciate that this situation has been frustrating for those affected by this crime and thank those individuals for their ongoing patience and support. “Those safety deposit boxes not opened by the thieves during the burglary have been left secured as they were found throughout the examination. Owners of HGSD are in the process of making contact with owners to arrange collection of it. “Of the 72 boxes opened during the burglary, we have only been unable to trace or contact six people who we believe have been a victim of crime. We continue to make efforts to trace them.” At the scene, there was no sign of forced entry to the outside of the building and it is believed that the
thieves disabled the communal lift on the second floor and then used the lift shaft to climb down into the basement. From there, they are reported to have forced open shutter doors into the basement before boring the holes into the vault wall. It has also been confirmed that an alarm call was received on Friday 3rd April at the MPS central communications command (MetCC) from Southern Monitoring Alarm Company, around the time the drilling is believed to have begun. The call stated that a confirmed intruder alarm had been activated at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd and was recorded and transferred to the police's CAD (Computer Aided Despatch) system. A grade was applied to the call that meant that no police response was deemed to be required. An internal investigation is now ongoing to identify why this grade was applied to the call in conjunction with the alarm company.
NAVIGATING: Access to the basement was initially gained by forcing their way into the lift shaft

The new Zouk experience Terrace investment brings outdoor dining all year round A once windy street corner on Chester Street has been transformed into a stylish and tranquil haven as Zouk Manchester brings you the perfect spot to enjoy al fresco dining come rain or shine. Working with designers at Ferrious, Zouk has transformed the previous site into a state of the art terrace where you can relax, eat, drink or enjoy a sheesha. With an investment of approximately £200,000 the terrace has been a significant project for the company and one owner Mudassar Amjad, says is very important for the business. “When we first began offering outdoor dining I think it was fair to say that it was a bit of an add on to the restaurant,” he said. “We created a standard decking space with tables, chairs and parasols but we were never happy with it. “We felt the area we had created did not live up to the rest of the restaurant.” Understanding what customers ‘want’ has been at the heart of the new terrace design, as Mudassar added: “Our customers expect to come to Zouk and eat in style and that should go for both indoors and out. “The new terrace is fantastic as
it shows that we have listened to our customers to ensure that when they choose to dine at Zouk we offer them the best outdoor dining space in Manchester.” Commenting on the new terrace his brother and co-owner Tayub Amjad added: “Everybody loves to eat outdoors but we Brits do not get chance as often as we might like. “When we decided to reinvent the terrace we enlisted expert help and considered carefully what we needed to make it work all year round. “We had to make it practical and combat the challenges of the unpredictable British weather but still ensure the space was flexible, luxurious and suitable for other popular outdoor activities like enjoying a sheesha.” The stylish new Zouk terrace is covered by a sophisticated retractable roof canopy system that can be individually controlled across the three terrace sections offering lots of flexibility for the service staff and customers. The roof, in combination with a new glazing system that sits on top of planting troughs, now provides a fully sheltered space that offers outdoor luxury all
year round. Ferrious Designer, Rob Perry, worked closely with brothers Tayub and Mudassar on the project. He explains the design specification saying: “We had to create an aesthetic and layout that encompassed the quality of the existing interior. “Tayub and Mudassar had lots of ideas from spaces they had seen during travels in Europe, America and the Middle East but one thing was clear they wanted the space to transport you somewhere else and almost have a holiday feel to it. “Privacy from passing traffic and distinction from the bustling street were also key considerations to the design. Essentially we had to deliver Tayub and Mudassar’s vision of a fully covered flexible space allowing high quality dining and lounge spaces to enjoy the range of services on offer.” The final design of the terrace certainly underlines the Zouk ethos, opulence and understated luxury using the best quality exotic materials. This means that customers who visit Zouk can enjoy food, drink and sheesha outdoors every day of the year.

ADVICE: Milind Pande, a consultant eye surgeon in East Yorkshire reminds us of taking care and wearing eye protection whilst playing sport
Play Safe Leading eye surgeon warns against sports related eye injuries Sports-related eye injuries lead to blindness for many people each year and sport is now one of the biggest causes of hospital admission for serious eye injury in the UK. As millions take to the playing field this season, one of the UK's leading eye surgeons warns the public that thousands of people are blinded by sports-related eye injuries or have to live with longterm consequences due to injuries which are completely preventable. Milind Pande, a consultant eye surgeon in East Yorkshire reminds coaches, parents and athletes of the importance of taking excellent care and wearing eye protection where appropriate for any kind of sport on or off the playing field. Commenting Mr Pande said: “Obviously racket sports are particularly hazardous. The
Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) estimates that squash alone is responsible for over 4,000 hospital admissions in the UK each year. “Injuries range from black eyes to punctured eyelids, most of which are associated with sports and recreational activities but these injuries are actually preventable especially if you wear protective eye wear. “Eye injuries resulting from athletic activities range from corneal abrasions (scratches on the surface of the eye), to the more serious, potentially blinding injuries, such as an orbital fracture (bones around the eye are broken) and detached retina (when the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye is pulled out of place).” Mr Pande advises having an eye test with the optician before taking part in any new sporting
activity and this can be a good opportunity to find out more about protective eyewear for your chosen sport if it is appropriate. Certain sports are best performed with the protection of special frames or goggles. Squash players should really wear goggles, which protect the temples and bridge of the nose as well as the eyes. Such frames need to be lightweight for comfort but strong enough to resist impact. People who wear glasses should also wear appropriate protective eyewear, as glasses are not sufficient protection since lenses may shatter when hit by something. If you play sport and you're unsure about how best to protect your vision, make sure you play safe and consult your local optometrist for professional advice.

A new service from Diabetes UK designed to help Muslims donate to charity during the holy month of Ramadan has been announced. For Muslims with diabetes, Ramadan can pose many challenges. As fasting can be dangerous to those with health conditions like diabetes, deciding whether to fast or choosing an alternative to fasting, can often be a difficult and confusing process. Eating large meals at Suhoor and Iftar can also increase the risk of high blood glucose levels. People from a South Asian background are up to six times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Juliet O’Brien, Diverse Communities Officer at Diabetes UK said: “We are very excited to be launching Text Ramadan. By donating just £3 you could help us provide essential guidance to Muslims on fasting safely during Ramadan. “This year Ramadan falls in summer, meaning the length of fast could be 17 hours or more. For Muslims with diabetes this could lead to a much higher risk of hypoglycaemia and dehydration, as well as an increased chance of high glucose levels at Suhoor and Iftar. Donations made via Text Ramadan could help us spread the word and make Ramadan safer for everyone. “If you are considering fasting and have diabetes, then you should make sure to speak to both your Imam and your GP in advance before making your final decision”. Diabetes UK offers help, advice and tips for Muslims with diabetes during this time. For every text sent to the Text Ramadan number a minimum of £2.96 will be received by Diabetes UK.

Mayor ousted after ‘Corrupt Practice’ The election of a London mayor will be re-run after the previous polling was declared void by a judge with allegations of corruption and illegal practices found to be true in the voting process. Lutfur Rahman, the first Mayor of Tower Hamlets in the 2010 elections, regained his seat in May 2014 as a representative of the independent party - Tower Hamlets First. However, that result has now been voided by an Election Court judge who found Rahman guilty of playing ‘race’ and ‘religious’ cards in his election drive. Election Commissioner Richard Mawrey, also ordered Rahman to pay
£250,000 in costs on the same charges with a re-election set to be staged in the upcoming months, which the former mayor cannot stand in. “[Mr Rahman ran a] ruthless and dishonest campaign to convince electorate his rival John Biggs was a racist,” Mr Mawrey said. Mr Biggs himself commented after the ruling that it was ‘a victory for honest politics’. “By setting out to break the rules and going to extraordinary lengths to win last May's mayoral election, Lutfur Rahman and his allies robbed the people of Tower Hamlets of the free and fair mayoral election they deserved and betrayed everyone in our
community who trusted and voted for him,” the Labour politician said. Rahman insisted that there was ‘little evidence’ of any wrongdoing and his lawyers also voiced their disbelief at the verdict branding the claims an ‘invention’, ‘exaggeration’ and ‘in some cases downright deliberately false allegations’. In a statement, Tower Hamlets First added: “Today's judgment has come as a shock - the Mayor strongly denies any wrongdoing and had full confidence in the justice system, and so this result has been surprising to say the least.”
Election season extends in Tower Hamlets

Border control Home Office announces all passports to be checked on UK exit
CLEARANCE SALE 500 CHAIRS IN STOCK
April 2015 - 3rd Edition
New border checks have been introduced this week which will require every passport to be thoroughly verified before a person can leave the UK. The checks are being introduced at seaports, airports and tunnels which provide exit points from the British Isles. The changes are expected to particularly affect cross-Channel and Channel tunnel travellers, who will now need to have their passports scanned. As airlines currently gather passengers' information ahead of time, there is unlikely to be a noticeable difference in queues for passengers. But there are fears of delays at peak travelling times while the changes are implemented. Until now, many people have been able to leave the country without having their passport scrutinised. The Home Office says the changes will strengthen Britain's border security, adding that the implementation of the checks will be staggered at sites across the country. For the first month all passports will be scanned, but only 25 per cent of passport holders will have their details verified. In the second month 50 per cent will be checked. By the middle of June, 100 per cent of passports will
be fully checked. Security and immigration minister James Brokenshire said: "It is right that we have an immigration system that is fair, that tackles immigration and that clamps down on anyone who tries to cheat the system by staying here when they have no right to do so. "Exit checks will provide us with vital information that confirms a person's exit from the UK. "Port and travel operators are experts in their business and know their customers best, which is why we've supported them to design and trial the systems for collecting data in a way that will minimise the impact on customers." More staff have been brought in to cope with the new measures, but whether the changes will have a detrimental impact on passengers will not be known until peak travelling times, such as the summer months. A P&O spokesperson said: "They have picked a quiet day for the introduction of the checks. "The actual scanning of passports is quick, it's the verification that takes longer. We are hoping there will be a fairly seamless transition to the new system."

Carpet at Jerusalem shrine causes religious rift
REFURBISHMENT: On Sunday 19th April workers removed carpets over ancient floor designs in the cave under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which has caused tensions
Muslim authorities replacing an old carpet worn thin by masses of worshippers at the Dome of the Rock, the iconic, gold-topped shrine that overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem has ignited religious tension. The lifting the carpet, as a routine remodeling project, has sparked a verbal holy war over the hilltop compound, which is revered by Jews and Muslims whose competing claims often spill over into violence. Israeli archaeological authorities say the repairs were carried out behind their backs, and an Israeli government minister urged an immediate halt to the work, claiming it might cause irreparable damage. Frustrated Israeli researchers say previously undocumented ancient floor designs were discovered when the old carpets were peeled off, but they didn't get a chance to document the designs before workmen covered them up with the new carpet. And some researchers claim the Bible's deepest secrets may lie beneath some of the newly exposed floor designs. "Something is there. I don't know what. But something is hidden there," said Israeli archaeologist Zachi Dvira, who studies the site. Officials with the Waqf, the Muslim authority that
administers the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, which includes the Dome of the Rock, reject the Israeli accusations. Sheikh Azzam Tamimi, the head of the Waqf, said the work is long overdue and has defiantly proclaimed that he was forbidding any Israeli involvement. "Our work in Al Aqsa is transparent," he said. "We are only putting down carpet and felt. Nothing more, nothing less." The work quietly began more than a month ago, and Israel facilitated the renovation project, said Jamal Al Quda, a member of a group of Jordanian carpet layers who received Israeli visas for the job. A packing list dated 11th March from an Egyptian carpet company to the Jordanian Embassy in Tel Aviv lists 80 bales of carpeting for the Marwani prayer area located at the compound, and the prayer area encircling the rock slab inside the dome. Jordan's King Abdullah II financed the project, according to Waqf. Israel captured Jerusalem's Old City from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war, but under a longstanding agreement, Jordan remains the custodian of the area's Muslim holy sites. On a recent afternoon in a small cave underneath the shrine's rock, Al Quda
dribbled Israeli all-purpose glue from a large tin onto an intricate stone tile decoration on the cave's marble floor. He said it was necessary to affix the base layer of thin dark felt before rolling out the carpet above it. Some Israeli archaeologists are alarmed about the glue used but Al Quda said the glue wouldn't damage the floor. "It comes off my hand," he said, rubbing his fingers. The cryptic geometric designs have sparked the imagination of some researchers about what secrets may lay beneath. Ancient Jewish traditions say the gold-cased Ark of the Covenant, which contained the Ten Commandments, may have been hidden away in a chamber when the First Jewish Temple was destroyed some 2,500 years ago. It's an Indiana Jones-type mystery that touches upon a holy grail for biblical enthusiasts. While Jerusalem may be the most excavated city in the world, the Dome of the Rock and its hilltop plaza are an archaeological gold mine that has never been properly dug because of the political sensitivities surrounding the site, which is considered Judaism's holiest spot and Islam's third holiest. The Dome of the Rock enshrines the large rock slab where Muslim tradition says the Prophet Muhammad
(pbuh) ascended to heaven. Jews believe the rock may be where the holiest part of the two ancient Temples stood as early as about 3,000 years ago - and where religious Jews pray a third Temple will one day be built. The adjacent Western Wall, believed to be one of the last remnants of the Temple complex, is the holiest site where Jews can pray. Palestinian officials reject Jewish historical ties to the site. The competing claims have spilled over into violence. In 1999, the Muslim authorities who administer the site dug an enormous hole 12 meters (40 feet) deep as part of construction for an underground prayer area, dumping 10,000 tons of earth in a nearby valley and an east Jerusalem dump. The director of the Israeli Antiquities Authority at the time called it an "archaeological crime." For years, Dvira and veteran Israeli archaeologist Gabriel Barkay have been leading a team of archaeologists and volunteers in combing through the dirt for historical finds. The initiative, called the Temple Mount Sifting Project, is conducted under the auspices of the Elad Foundation, a group that also purchases Arab homes in contested parts of East Jerusalem and helps move Jews in. Critics say this
nationalist agenda should not mix with archaeology. Israel's state comptroller wrote a scathing report in 2010 about the Muslim authorities' illicit work projects at the compound and Israel's failure at enforcing supervision there. Israeli officials kept the report classified out of concern that its publication could harm the sensitive relationship with Jordan. Tens of thousands of worshippers attend weekly Friday prayers, and the carpets have been replaced before — most recently 12 years ago, at a time of heightened violence when Israeli antiquities officials were granted limited access to the site. Past renovation projects were done quietly behind the scenes. Leaked photos posted on social media sites — combined with the political influence of Israeli nationalists monitoring the site — drew extra attention and fueled the latest controversy. Last week, Israel's housing minister, Uri Ariel of the nationalist Jewish Home party, sent an alarmed letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the carpeting project. "There is no need to elaborate on how important this site is, where every modification, every excavation with heavy
equipment can cause irreparable harm to the foundations of the Temple," Ariel wrote. Photos that were leaked to Facebook from the off-limits restoration site showed a number of geometric floor patterns never before documented by archaeologists, said Frankie Snyder, a researcher with the Temple Mount Sifting Project. Some apparently date to when the Crusaders controlled the complex in the 12th century, she said. "I'm worried about damage of the original floors," said Barkay, the archaeologist. "The patterns were never properly documented." Israel Hasson, the director of the Israeli Antiquities Authority, said once the government body learned about the renovation, it made arrangements with the Waqf to send an archaeologist to document some of the floor patterns, but others already had been covered by the maroon and beige carpeting. "We got to part of them. We didn't get to it all. I won't ask anyone to pull up the carpets to document it," Hasson said. "We will wait for the next opportunity. We're sure to be here over the next 2,000 years."

Small restaurant in Qatar lets poor eat for free In a dusty corner of Qatar's booming capital, a sign outside a modest restaurant popular with migrant labourers reads: "If you are hungry and have no money, eat for free!!!" Sixteen kilometres (10 miles) from the gleaming glass towers of Doha, one of the richest places on the planet, sits the "Industrial Area" of small-scale workshops, factories and low-cost accommodation. It is only a 40-minute drive south of the centre of the Qatari capital and its luxury shops, upmarket brands and expensive restaurants. But the "Industrial Area", rarely seen by outsiders, is a different Qatar one which provides essential labour and materials for the country's massive and relentless expansion. It is at the margin of Doha
life, both geographically and metaphorically, but home to a restaurant called Zaiqa doing something apparently unique for the oil-rich Gulf state. About three weeks ago the Indian brothers who own Zaiqa decided to put up a small makeshift sign offering free food to customers who cannot afford to pay. "When I saw the board I had tears in my eyes," said one of the owners, Shadab Khan, 47, originally from New Delhi, who has lived in Qatar for 13 years. "Even now when I talk about it, I get a lump in my throat." He said the idea came from his younger brother, Nishab. The 16-seater eatery stands on the prosaically named Street 23, sandwiched between another restaurant and a steel workshop.

GENEROUS: Shadab, who is a filmmaker as well as a restaurant owner, said those asking for food are mostly construction workers from countries such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh
It is a busy area - opposite is a mosque and then a road where large trucks hurtle past. Inside, on brightly coloured tablecloths, "authentic Indian cuisine from the heart of Delhi" is served 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A fish curry costs six Qatari riyals (£1.10), an egg roast is three riyals and a spinach dish of Palak Paneer is 10 riyals - for those who choose to pay. The need for free food in Qatar is particularly acute among labourers and those working in heavy industry. It is estimated that there are anywhere between 700,000 and one million migrant workers in the tiny Gulf kingdom, out of a total population of 2.3 million. Rights groups have criticised companies in Qatar for not paying workers on time or, in some cases, not at all. The Qatari government, under pressure to introduce salary reform in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup, vowed earlier this year to force companies to pay wages through direct bank transfers. Even those who do get paid will be intent on sending most of their money back home, said one of Zaiqa's diners, Nepalese mechanic Ghufran Ahmed. "Many labourers earn 8001,000 riyals £150-£188) per month. They have to send money back to home. It's expensive here so there are people who need free food," he said. Shadab, who is a filmmaker as well as a restaurant owner, said those asking for food are mostly construction workers from countries such as India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
"We realise a lot of people out here do not get paid on time and do not have money, not even money to eat," he said. "So there were people who would come here and just buy a packet of bread. And they would eat the bread with water.
but left in case their complimentary lunch should become public knowledge. In another sign of how people fuelling the Qatari boom are struggling to live, it was recently revealed that some Doha market workers were forced to live in
COMPASSIONATE: The staff of Zaiqa restaurant in southern suburbs of the Qatari capital Doha welcome the poor to eat for free
"So, we realised those people don't have money for anything else. They just buy a packet of bread, which comes to about one riyal. So, we would try to offer them food." But it is not easy, added Shadab. "Self-respect", he said, means many refuse to take something for nothing. As a result, in the three weeks since the free food experiment started, "the number of people coming here to get free food is like two or three people a day at the most". As if to emphasise Shadab's point, two workers entered the restaurant while AFP was there
their stalls as they cannot afford rents. For Zaiqa too, there is a black cloud on the horizon. The restaurant's future is threatened by a dispute over rent with the property owner and may have to close down. Shadab and his brother have a different plan for their next restaurant. "We are putting a refrigerator outside, so this refrigerator won't have a lock. It will be facing the road and it will have packets of food with dates on them," he said. "So anybody who wants to take it, he doesn't have to come inside."

Sri Lankan police detained the younger brother of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday on suspicion of misappropriating state funds, the first arrest of a member of the once-powerful family. Since beating Rajapaksa at an election in January, President Maithripala Sirisena has launched investigations into financial deals clinched by his predecessor and members of the Rajapaksa family, some of whom also held powerful political posts. Basil Rajapaksa, who headed the economic development ministry, was
questioned for six hours over the misuse of an anti-poverty government fund, his lawyer U.R. De Silva and police said. He returned to the island on Tuesday, having left for the United States soon after the January presidential election. He denied any wrongdoing and said he had come home to answer the allegations. On Monday, Mahinda Rajapaksa refused to appear before an anti-bribery commission investigating allegations that he illegally induced a rival to support his presidential campaign.
Taliban ready for offensive
The Afghan Taliban on Wednesday announced the start of its annual spring offensive, warning it would ramp up attacks on foreign embassies and government officials, as well as military targets, starting on Friday. The Islamist militant group has been fighting the Afghan government and its foreign backers since it was ousted from power by U.S.-backed Afghan forces in 2001. “If the foreign occupiers really want to relieve themselves from this nuisance of fighting, they should immediately withdraw,” the Taliban said in a statement. The Taliban typically steps up its military efforts when
warmer weather facilitates the transit of fighters and weapons. This year's offensive has been dubbed ‘Azm’ or ‘Resolution’, similar to the name chosen for the NATOled coalition's two year "Resolute Support" mission that started in January. An Afghan defence ministry spokesman dismissed the Taliban announcement, saying the armed forces were ready to battle any insurgent offensive. “Our enemies don't have the capability to collapse any province or district,” said Brigadier General Dawlat Waziri.
It’s a ‘Bad Ad’
Jewellers withdraw promos after claims of racism
A controversial advert, branded ‘insidiously racist’ by campaigners, has been withdrawn by a major jewellers in India with a written apology made to anyone of whom it caused offence. Kaylan Jewellers, which employs 4,000 people across the South Asian nation, said its latest advertisement Bollywood actress, featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was intended to present ‘royalty, timeless beauty and elegance’. The image showed Bachchan sat on a sun lounger whilst a young child, of darker skin, holds a parasol above her head to protect her from the sun. In an open letter to the actress, who is also a goodwill ambassador for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS and a former Miss World, social activists said the image reflected 17th and 18th century paintings of noblewomen with child servants. “In the advertisement you appear to be representing aristocracy from a bygone era – bejewelled, poised and relaxing while an obviously underage slave-child, very dark and emaciated, struggles to hold an oversize umbrella
over your head,” said the letter. “While advertisers routinely use fantasy images to sell products, they must surely desist from using images that condone, legitimise, normalise, or build desirable fantasy around slavery or servitude of any kind, including child slavery or child servitude.” In response to the growing campaign against the ad, which was first featured in a national newspaper last week, the jewellers published a written apology on their Facebook page. It read: “If we have inadvertently hurt the sentiments of any individual or organisation, we deeply regret the same. We have started the process of withdrawing this creative from our campaign.” Amongst the activists who called for the advert to be dropped were: former chair of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Shantha Sinha; and CEO of Oxfam India, Nisha Agrawal. Both called for Rai Bachchan to disassociate herself from the advert and ensure its withdrawal.

Smart battery An aluminium cell that charges phone in one minute
The panic that strikes most smartphone users when they realise their battery is treacherously close to dying out and they’re in the middle of their social media activity is no laughing matter. Who can afford to put a pause on their ‘selfie’ of the day whilst their phone needs charging – that would be a disaster, surely? Well panic no more, - scientists now state they have invented a new battery that could fully charge a smartphone in just one minute. The researchers have created an aluminium battery, which they hope could replace the lithium models commonly found in laptops and mobile phones. And as well as the ‘unprecedented charging times’ of their aluminium prototype, the team said it was also safer than lithium-ion batteries as it was less prone to catching fire and more environmentally friendly than alkaline models such as AA and AAA. Publishing the findings in the journal Nature, Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at Stanford University, hailed it as a breakthrough in battery technology that went further than previous attempts using aluminium. He said: “We have developed a rechargeable aluminium battery that may replace existing storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad
for the environment, and lithium-ion batteries, which occasionally burst into flames. Our new battery won't catch fire, even if you drill through it. “Millions of consumers use 1.5-volt AA and AAA batteries. Our rechargeable aluminium battery generates about two volts of electricity. That's higher than anyone has achieved with aluminium.” The prototype was said to be more durable, withstanding more than 7,500 cycles without any loss of capacity and surpassing previous aluminium batteries which died after just 100 chargedischarge cycles, while a typical lithiumion battery lasts about 1,000 cycles. “This was the first time an ultra-fast aluminium-ion battery was constructed with stability over thousands of cycles," the report's authors wrote. Prof Dai added lithium batteries can ‘go off in an unpredictable manner’ and cited a ban by US airlines Delta and United on bulk shipments on passenger planes. And the new design could be used to store renewable energy of the electrical grid, the researchers suggested. Meanwhile, co-author Ming Gong said: “Another feature of the aluminium battery is flexibility. You can bend it and fold it, so it has the potential for use in flexible electronic devices. Aluminium is also a cheaper metal than lithium.”

Obama apologises over hostage deaths
An American and an Italian who had been held hostage for several years by al Qaeda in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan were inadvertently killed in a U.S. counterterrorism operation in January, President Barack Obama said on Thursday. “I profoundly regret what happened. On behalf of the United States government, I offer our deepest apologies to the families,” Obama said in an appearance at the White House. The operation in which American doctor Warren Weinstein and Italian aid worker Giovanni Lo Porto were killed also resulted in the death of an American al Qaeda leader, Ahmed Farouq, the White House said. Another American al Qaeda member, Adam Gadahn, was also killed, likely in a separate operation, the White House added. U.S. government sources said the operations involved drone strikes.
15 hangings in Pakistan
Pakistan hanged 15 people on Tuesday this past week, officials said, representing the largest number of people executed on the same day since an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment was lifted in December. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a de facto moratorium on capital punishment on 17th December, a day after Pakistani Taliban gunmen attacked a school and killed 153 people, most of them children. The killings put pressure on the government to do more to tackle an Islamist insurgency. Initially, it was only people convicted of militant offences who were executed but officials later said any prisoner on death row whose appeals had been rejected could be executed. The inspector general of prisons in Punjab province, Farooq Nazir, told Reuters 14 people who had been convicted of ‘heinous crimes’ had been hanged in the province. One person was hanged in Baluchistan province, an official there said.
Bangladesh candidate attacked in election rally
Assailants wielding iron rods attacked the car of Bangladesh's former prime minister and main opposition leader Khaleda Zia on Monday during an election rally and then shot at it as the vehicle sped away but she was unhurt. The attack highlighted tensions in the politically unstable South Asian country, where Khaleda's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has stepped up protests aimed at forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and hold a new national election following a disputed 2014 poll. BNP spokesman Mohammad Shamsuddin told Reuters Khaleda had been addressing a rally for a mayoral election in the capital Dhaka from her car when the men tried to attack it with iron rods and sticks. Shots were fired at the bullet-proof vehicle as it drove off, Shamsuddin said. Khaleda's bodyguard and five other people were injured in the attack and had to receive hospital treatment, he added. The BNP called for a nationwide general strike outside Dhaka and the city of Chittagong - which both hold mayoral elections on 28th April - to protest against the attack on its leader.

MORSI sentenced to 20 years Former president turns prisoner after court ruling Egypt’s first democratically elected leader should be preparing to defend his seat in an election next year yet instead now finds himself spending the next 20 years behind bars. Mohamed Morsi was elected president of Egypt in June 2012. His reign in charge of the nation was short-lived however, as just over one year later he was overthrown by the army on allegations of terror offences whilst in office. Last week, he appeared in front of a high court with other members of his now banned Muslim Brotherhood Party, where he received a sentencing of 20 years without the chance of parole. Morsi stood in a cage in court as judge Ahmed Sabry Youssef read out the ruling against him and 12 other party members, as the sentencing was broadcast live on state television. The men were convicted on charges of violence, kidnapping and torture stemming from the killing of protesters during demonstrations in 2012 yet were acquitted of murder charges, which carry the death sentence. His sentencing was not warmly received by many international bodies as Egypt’s democratic elections come into question. White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said the US was ‘concerned’ about the sentencing and said everyone has the right to
a fair trial. “All Egyptians regardless of political affiliation are entitled to equal and fair treatment before the law, including full respect to their rights to due process,” Earnest said. “Mr Morsi, like all other defendants must be afforded the basic legal right of due process. And the United States continues to be opposed to politicized arrests and detentions.” Meanwhile, Amnesty International described the ruling as ‘a travesty of justice’ that ‘shatters any remaining illusion of independence and impartiality in Egypt’s criminal justice system’. Morsi has always protested his innocence and says he is determined to reverse what he calls a military coup against him in 2013 staged by then-army chief, now president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Amr Darrag, a Morsi-era minister, said the Brotherhood would remain a powerful force, with younger members taking up leadership roles made vacant by the state's crackdown. “The overall attitude of the Brotherhood [is] more revolutionary because the generation taking it over is young and more revolutionary and they saw what kind of an Egypt we'd have if they don't do what they have to do,” he told Reuters in an interview in Istanbul.

‘We will never forget you’ Malala writes to kidnapped Nigerian girls One year on from the abductions of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls by Islamist militants and Pakistani teenager, Malala Yousafzai, has released an open letter telling them ‘not to give up hope’. Addressing her ‘brave sisters, the kidnapped schoolgirls of Chibok’, she told the girls they will never be forgotten following the shocking incident by members of Boko Haram. “Please know this: we will never forget you. We will always stand with you,” 17year-old Yousafzai wrote in her letter. “We will not rest until you have been reunited with your families.” Yousafzai was shot in the head on a school bus in Pakistan by the Taliban in 2012 for refusing to quit school and won global acclaim for her passionate advocacy of women's right to education. Celebrities, including U.S. singersongwriter Mary J. While some of the girls managed to escape the militants’ grip, the majority of them remain missing. Malala added: “Remember that one day your tragic ordeal will end, you will be reunited with your families and friends, and you will have the chance to finish the education you courageously sought. “I look forward to the day I can hug each one of you, pray with you, and celebrate your freedom with your families. Until then, stay strong, and never lose hope. You are my heroes.” On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the kidnapping last Tuesday, Nigeria's President-elect Muhammadu Buhari vowed to make every effort to rescue the girls, but conceded that it was not clear whether they would ever be found.

Saudi Arabia:
No evidence its agents helped in 9/11 attacks Attorneys for Saudi Arabia say a judge should reject claims by families of victims of the September 11 attacks that new evidence including an interview with the man who became known as the ‘20th hijacker’ - shows agents of the kingdom ‘directly and knowingly’ helped the hijackers. In papers filed in Manhattan federal court on Friday 10th April, the lawyers said there was no evidence Saudi Arabia supported or caused the attacks. They urged a judge to dismiss the claims against Saudi Arabia, saying the lawyers ‘have had enough chances to make their case’. Saudi Arabia was among the countries, companies and organisations sued in 2002 and afterward by families who claimed they aided alQaida, Osama bin Laden and other terrorist groups. The lawsuits sought billions of dollars in damages. Lawyers for Saudi Arabia also urged the judge considering the merits of the civil litigation to disregard claims by al-Qaida member Zacarias Moussaoui, who is serving a life prison sentence after pleading guilty in April 2005 to conspiring with the hijackers to kill Americans. They called his comments to plaintiffs' lawyers last year ‘colorful but immaterial hearsay statements’ from a convicted, mentally ill terrorist. Before jurors spared Moussaoui's life, a psychologist testified for the defense at death penalty proceedings that he had paranoid schizophrenia. Moussaoui says it was a lie that Saudi Arabia cut ties with al-Qaida and bin Laden in 1994. Lawyers for 9/11 families

Saudi Arabia was dismissed as a defendant in the case once before by a judge who said it was protected by sovereign immunity, but a federal appeals court in December 2013 reinstated it, saying a legal exception existed and the circumstances were extraordinary. They wrote: “If they had a single piece of evidence that would stand up in court, they would highlight it in their papers. Be it his bearded avatar in ‘3 Idiots’ or the clean-shaven look in ‘Fukrey’, the actor, more often than not, opts for a different look in his movies. He is currently sporting a new look for his new project. Riding high on the success wave of the seventh installment of the international franchise ‘Fast And Furious 7’, the actor talks about his Bollywood journey that has just begun. Talking about working with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel, Ali says: “It was fun. They didn't know about my accent in the film – so my shots sometimes required six-seven retakes as Vin and Paul wouldn't stop laughing. “Also, it was Paul's birthday on the first day of the shoot. “I had a long conversation with him about films and action. He asked me to keep it real. “He was a fine actor and martial arts expert. “Vin and I chatted about Bollywood and potential locations in India for the next part of the franchise if there is one. I personally feel that it's a great franchise and the legacy should continue.”
One would imagine that Ali’s perception in the industry has changed after ‘Fast And Furious 7’. He says that really perceptions of him actually began changing after he did ‘Khamoshiyan’ and that he is always being approached for unconventional projects. “It's the result of a lot of inputs from my end. I don't think I go by looks alone. Working on a particular look doesn't make you a serious actor. I am not into method acting. I interpret my character in a certain way and decide on it. I am very impulsive when it comes to experimenting with my looks and love playing with ideas by involving people from all walks of life,” he said. For those who have watched ‘Khamoshiyan’, they’ll be aware of Ali’s intimate scenes. He says: “When you see an Indian man's behind, that's too much. That will make you feel awkward. Women are naturally beautiful. “There were a lot of suggestive scenes and I wouldn’t do them ever, whatever the reason.” Ali’s next film is ‘Love Affair’ - a movie set in the '50s and is based on a true story.

www.asianexpress.co.uk After news of Mika Singh slapping a doctor at an event which he was booked to perform at in Delhi, the singer released an official statement about what happened. Mika says in a statement: "I had made a humble request whilst being on stage, as I always do that the ladies and children should be given space to dance and enjoy the show. I asked the gentleman in the audience several times politely to move over to the side slightly and most complied straight away. “However, there was a small group of men, who constantly ignored my requests. “The ladies meanwhile were consistently asking me to ask them to move slightly. “Again, I kept very calm and upon the ladies persistence I again requested the gentleman to give them some space. It was then that the particular doctor

Mika Singh clarifies slapping a doctor in mention starting swearing at me from the audience and showing his middle finger in front of all the doctors present. I realised at this point he was drunk which everyone witnessed. “I called him up on stage, and asked him whether he would feel just as comfortable doing the same actions on stage or in front of his family. He continued his tirade of swearing after which I lost my cool, which I probably shouldn't have, and slapped him. “Now what I want to ask is why is it that I am always perceived in a negative way even when I am doing things for the protection of our own women? “Would people have rather preferred if I hadn't taken a step to help others? Either I
Rishi Kapoor disapproving of
Katrina Kaif? While dad Rishi Kapoor has always been proud of Ranbir Kapoor's various achievements, he doesn't seem to be happy with his son's latest decision of being in relationship with Katrina Kaif. Though Rishi hasn't said anything obvious about Ranbir moving out with Katrina, he doesn't really seem to be approving of Katrina as his would be daughter-in-law. And this was quite evident when Rishi recently skipped the family dinner with Ranbir-Katrina, where the entire Kapoor family was present. While the real reason behind his dislike for Katrina is not known, we guess there are few reasons that are stopping Rishi from accepting Katrina. Most of the star couples have had unsuccessful marriages and that might be one of the reasons why Rishi is averse to Ranbir-Katrina's relationship. Or it might just be the fact that since Rishi shares a cordial relation with Salman Khan and the fact that Katrina dated Sallu in a complicated relationship, perhaps dads thinks Ranbir is better off without her. Who knows…
Though Nora Fatehi will be seen grooving in an item song in Telugu actioncomedy ‘Kick 2’, it is way different from Nargis Fakhri's sizzling number in Salman Khan starrer Hindi flick ‘Kick’. “It is nothing like that (Nargis Fakhri's item number) at all. “It is an extremely energetic and fast-paced dance number with a signature step that would make everyone dance to it

right from a toddler to an old man. The song from Salman's ‘Kick’ that featured Nargis was almost like a club track. My song is a peppy number, set in a the backdrop of a village. It's very hot and rustic. The shoot is already done,” says Nora. Though she didn't divulge much, Nora reveals that her item song is on the lines of ‘Munni Badnam' from ‘Dabangg’. Nora says, “Yes, it is almost like ‘Munni Badnam', but a couple of notches higher. This song is all about expressions and hard core dance moves. It should release in few weeks.” She adds,
Neha Dhupia: ‘Welcome To Karachi’ to release in Pakistan
‘Welcome To Karachi’ producer Vashu Bhagnani says his movie will be promoted in Pakistan, where they are trying for a commercial release as well. Asked if the political satire will be promoted in cities like Lahore and Karachi on the other side of the border, Bhagnani said: "We have been invited, and we are planning to go. In the next 45 days, we will plan." Asked if the film will be releasing in Pakistan, he said: "Hundred percent." Directed by Ashish R. Mohan, ‘Welcome To Karachi’ features Arshad Warsi, Jackky Bhagnani and Lauren Gottlieb. The film will release on 21st May.
should ignore people like this and let these type of things carry on in our country or forget who I am and stand up for the vulnerable.” I have been like this for the last 18 years and I will never change myself. I would like to tell you of an incident last year where I helped two men on the road who had suffered a hitand-run accident. The next day the news reported that I had hit them with my car and I was the target of the media. The question is why is help first perceived in the wrong way? Finally, I just want to conclude by saying the people can decide whether I was right or wrong. I did what I felt was for the betterment of our ladies and children and I will always continue to stand up against what is wrong."
I will never participate/appear in a show like ‘Bigg Boss’ Quite a few actresses have made their presence felt in Bollywood after a successful stint in the popular reality show, ‘Bigg Boss’, and therefore it came as a big surprise when Neha Dhupia flatly refused to join the show. When we caught up with her at a business conclave at the Taj city Agra, the beauty with brains, who has made a mark in both commercial and offbeat films. Says Neha: “Since cinema is a popular media and actors/actresses are household names, it is evident that many flock shows to boost their popularity here. One really has to work hard to stay at the top and perseverance pays - Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir are prime examples.” Reacting to a question about her return to the television Neha said, “I had earlier worked in a TV serial ‘Rajdhani’ and I will surely work in television if there is a good enough offer, but I will never participate/appear in a show like ‘Bigg Boss as it’s not my thing.”
“Master Johnny, who is known for the hit song ‘Cinema Choopistha Mama' featuring Shruti Haasan, has choreographed the song.” Moroccan-based model and actress Nora is very much fond of Bollywood songs and dance. “I am obsessed with Bollywood songs and dance and now Tollywood. It is almost second nature to me,” says Nora. She will be also seen in a special appearance song 'Alif Se' along with Emraan Hashmi and Gurmeet Choudhary in the film ‘Mr. X’ directed by Vikram Bhatt and produced by Mahesh Bhatt.

This novel 'found-footage' horror from director Levan Gabriadze (and producer Timur Bekmambetov) has been attracting rave reviews and won the Most Innovative Film prize at the Fantasia Film Festival. 220PS Scirocco GTS unveiled
The new Scirocco GTS makes its debut as a separate and especially sporty GT version The spirit of the first Scirocco GTS (which made its debut in 1982) was carried forward into the year 2015 in the new GTS. The Scirocco is a pure bred European sports coupe which has been reinvented through the years to give it a timeless appeal. Presented at the Geneva Motor
Show in March 41 years ago, it became an icon of compact German coupĂŠs. The car caught the spirit of the age: over a million units of the Scirocco have been produced since then. Last summer a comprehensively refined generation of the sports car was launched, featuring, among other things, a completely new range of engines.

Continued from page 85 lding on this, Volkswagen unveiled the new Scirocco GTS – a sports car with 162 kW / 220 PS – in a world premiere at Auto Shanghai. Its engine is one of the most popular in the Scirocco range because it is sharing its design genes with the engine of the Golf GTI. A turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine that is recognised as being one of the most agile four-cylinder engines in the world. It catapults the Scirocco GTS – either with a manual gearbox or with the 6-speed DSG – to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. Top speed: 246 km/h (DSG: 244 km/h). The average fuel consumption shows just how efficient the engine of the Scirocco is: just 6.1 l/100 km with a manual gearbox and similarly economical at 6.4 l/100 km with a DSG gearbox. The first GTS was launched in 1982. There has been a Scirocco GTS before, in 1982, and that coupé was also related to the Golf GTI of its time, both technically and visually. The Scirocco was recognisable by a strikingly designed GTS stripe (which ran all round the silhouette of the car just above the sill), its distinctive sport seats and a gear knob in golf ball design. The GTI had the same sport seats (with different upholstery) and the golf ball gear knob. The new Scirocco GTS will be launched in Europe at the end of May, with China following in the summer. This marks the comeback of an icon, a straight-forward, mighty fast and exclusively-equipped sports car. The Scirocco GTS will be equipped as standard with new 18-inch “Norwich” alloy wheels; the popular 19- inch “Lugano” alloy wheels will be available as an option. The red brake callipers of the GTS can be seen through the spokes of both of these wheel options. In addition, the Scirocco GTS comes with the R-Line package "Exterieur" as standard, which includes distinctive R-style bumpers (at the front with integrated fog lamps and glossy black radiator and air inlet grilles), custom side sill extensions, a roof spoiler (also R-style) and a diffuser. The wing mirror caps are painted in stylish black and, just like its predecessor, the '82 Scirocco GTS, the new model can be ordered with a sporty GTS decal for the body as an option (standard in China). This option features two decorative red stripes that run centrally from the bonnet over the roof and the boot (if the car is painted in “Flash Red” the stripes are black). The new Scirocco is also enhanced by 3D GTS logos in the radiator grille and on the tailgate. The Scirocco GTS can be ordered in six colours: "Deep Black", "Indium Grey", "Urano Grey", "Pure White", "Oryx White" and, as already mentioned, "Flash Red". The interior of the Scirocco GTS is also customised, of course, and dominated by the sporty colours black and red.

Bentley Mulsanne Speed Blue Train • Historic ‘Blue Train’ race commemorated with 85th anniversary Mulliner Limited Edition. • Mulliner artisans pay homage to famous 1930 Speed Six with bespoke features & intricate historical references. • Total of four examples to be hand-crafted in Crewe for continental European customers. • Mulsanne Speed is world’s fastest ultra-luxury driving experience. Bentley Motors is commemorating the historic ‘Blue Train’ race won by the Bentley Speed Six in 1930 with a Mulliner Limited Edition – the Mulsanne Speed ‘Blue Train’. Debuting at the TechnoClassica show in Essen, Germany, just four examples will be hand-crafted in Crewe for customers in continental Europe. 85 years ago, Captain Woolf Barnato, Chairman of Bentley Motors and pioneering ‘Bentley Boy’, was staying in Cannes at the Carlton Hotel. He accepted a wager that not only could he beat the Calais-Mediterranée Express or ‘Blue Train’ back to Calais, but that he could be at his club in London before the train even reached the English Channel. He was, and
the remarkable victory has been talked about ever since. The ‘Blue Train’ Limited Edition is produced by the skilled craftsmen and women of Bentley’s bespoke coachbuilding division, Mulliner. Each features a number of delightful historical references and modern interpretations of design details from the original Speed Six. For example, the fluting pattern in the door panels and the rear quarter inserts echo the interior of Barnato’s original car. The dashboard facia features an expertly crafted veneer image of the original Bentley ‘Blue Train’ Speed Six. Meanwhile, the tread-plate plaques bear the wording ‘Blue Train 85 Years’ and the front grille features a square mesh design inspired
by original Speed Six. Richard Charlesworth, Head of the Bentley Heritage Collection, comments: “The Blue Train is one of the most famous and celebrated cars in the world, and it perfectly embodies the racing spirit of the Bentley. Woolf Barnato was a three-time Le Mans victor, but winning the Blue Train race captured the public’s imagination, and fuelled the legend of the Bentley Boys. By beating the Calais-Mediterranée Express he forever guaranteed the Speed Six’s place in automotive history.” The first ‘Blue Train’ Limited Edition delivered will also feature a personalised hamper, trimmed with Burnt Oak and Camel hide to perfectly match the interior of the car.
Mulliner has crafted beautiful leather cutlery holders and a leather rug wrap-around, both featuring ‘Blue Train’ embroidery. The hamper contains exclusive Robbe & Berking silver plated cutlery, Haviland Limoges porcelain crockery, Linley crystal champagne flutes and a 100 percent Angora picnic rug, woven in Scotland. Robert Engstler, Regional Director Europe, added: “The fact that we are producing just four of these Limited Editions is highly significant, as Barnato famously made it to the club in London four minutes before the train arrived in Calais. The unique design elements bring back nostalgic memories of one of the most legendary Bentleys of all times.”

Packing a
punch! Porsche is beginning the 2015 convertible season by celebrating the world premiere of the new Boxster Spyder - which made its debut at the 2015 New York International Auto Show. The new top model in the open two-seater series retains the independent character of the previous Spyder, which has already attained cult status. For example, the classic fabric roof is still opened and closed by hand, and the sports car is only available with a manual transmission. As a true original roadster, the Boxster Spyder offers a traditional sports-car driving experience but with contemporary performance. This means a firm sports suspension with a 20-mm lower ride height, brakes taken from the 911 Carrera, more direct steering, and a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with an output of 375 hp (276 kW).
Outstanding driving dynamics by the most powerful Boxster Drivers and passengers can thus look forward to a genuine sportscar experience with outstanding driving dynamics in the lightest yet most powerful Boxster there is. It only takes around 4.5 seconds for the Boxster Spyder to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h; the model's top speed is 290 km/h. NEDC overall fuel consumption amounts to 9.9 l/100 km. The distinctive design of the Boxster Spyder includes stylistic elements that recall the legendary sports and race cars from Porsche.
For example, as a tribute to the 718 Spyder from the 1960s, the new Boxster Spyder has two prominent streamlined bulges that extend down along the long rear lid behind the headrests. The partially manually operated, lightweight top is suitable for everyday use and brings to mind roadsters from the past, while the fins that stretch back to the rear lend the vehicle's silhouette its characteristic design. The front and rear end of the model were taken from the Cayman GT4.
More so than in any other Boxster, the interior of the new top model creates an atmosphere that elicits a feeling of pure driving pleasure. The driver and passenger sit in light sports bucket seats with large side supports, while the new steering wheel with a diameter of 360 mm helps ensure the midengine roadster can be driven precisely and with great agility. In line with the model's purist design neither a radio nor an air conditioner is included as standard equipment in order to reduce
weight. However, both can be ordered ex-factory as optional equipment at no extra cost. In addition, the entire range of Boxster audio systems is available for customers to choose from as an option. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with all of its special features can also be ordered as optional equipment, for example. The new Boxster Spyder will be launched on the market in July 2015.

BMW i8 clinches global award
For the second time in succession BMW i clinched victory at the World Car Awards in the category World Green Car. Following the success of the purely electrically driven BMW i3 the previous year, the BMW i8 was awarded this prestigious award at the New York International Auto Show. The sports car's combination of groundbreaking plug-in hybrid drive technology and innovative lightweight construction together with its avant-garde design was honoured by the international jury at the World Car Awards. The BMW i8 was also one of the finalists in the category World Luxury Car at the World Car Awards 2015, thereby underlining its special position. The BMW i8 is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle manufactured by the BMW Group. It combines the performance of a sports car with the fuel consumption and emission figures of a subcompact vehicle. The BMW i8 can be driven up to 37 kilometres under electric power alone, accelerate in the style of a purebred sports car and yet its average consumption is that of a
subcompact car. Its 1.5-litre threecylinder petrol engine, equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, is combined with an electric motor. The battery can be charged at a conventional power outlet, at a charging station or simply while driving. The system performance of the BMW i8 is 266 kW/362 hp and it accelerates in just 4.4 seconds to 100 km/h from a standing start (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 49 g/km). The extensive use of innovative materials, as well as the i8's energyefficient production processes also
Rocking! Anything but cute and definitely not slow - the brand new Opel Adam Rocks S will celebrate its world premiere at the 2015 International Amsterdam Motorshow. With its sturdy, masculine appearance, the swing top canvas roof and powerful 1.4-liter turbo engine the 3.75 meters long Adam Rocks S will appeal to customers who want to combine dynamic driving outside of the city with thirst for adventure, open air feeling and stylish design. The powerful 110 kW/150 hp ECOTEC engine with Start/Stop makes do with a mere 5.9 litres of petrol per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, which is equivalent to
139 g/km of CO2. It is fitted with a short ratio 6-speed gearbox. Accelerations are those of a small sporty car - 100 km/h are reached in 8.5 seconds - but the Adam Rocks S mainly impresses with great elasticity: it makes the transition for 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 210 km/h. Equipped for fast and sporty excursions, it has a specially tuned sport chassis, lowered by 15 mm compared to the Adam Rocks, and a direct sporty steering increases driving pleasure especially on winding country roads. A high performance braking system and an ESP system that can be
underline the overall, future-oriented concept. The optional laser headlights and the services developed specifically for electro mobility by the BMW ConnectedDrive team are further proof of the progressive direction taken by the BMW i8. The BMW i8 is the BMW Group's third model to be honoured with the World Green Car Award at the World Car Awards, following the BMW 118d in 2008, which represented the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, and the BMW i3 the previous year.
deactivated offer ambitious drivers the possibility of safely pushing the rock and roll athlete to its limits. Adam Rocks S combines its rugged individuality with open air fun. The standard swing top electrically operated canvas roof gives access to the sky above in just 5 seconds. Parking in the city becomes child's play when the Adam Rocks is fitted with the optional Advanced Park Assist. At speeds below 30 km/h, the system identifies suitable parking spaces and automatically parks the car. Advanced Park Assist always comes with Side Blind Spot Alert. It uses the ultrasonic sensors to warn the driver of an imminent collision when changing lanes. Side Blind Spot Alert works in speeds ranging from 11 km/h to 140 km/h. And even the most dynamic driver will not have to miss out on all-round connectivity in the Adam Rocks S with Opel's IntelliLink infotainment systems bringing the world of smartphones, both Android and Apple iOS, into the cabin.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
Hammer blow for Tino’s Ahmed double adds further woes to stuttering TT
Meanwhile Tino’s have a lot of work and turn their fortunes around. JackHammer FC 3-1 Tetley’s Tino MOTM: Haseeb Ahmed Tetley’s Tino’s chances of winning this to do if they are to climb the table once year’s SLUK Premier Division took a again, with nine games remaining to try (JackHammer FC) further blow last week as a double from JackHammer’s Haseeb Ahmed guided his side to a 3-1 victory. Tino’s had started the season in fine form yet three defeats in a row and without a win since February has seen the side slip down to seventh in the table, seven points off top spot. Going into Thursday’s encounter looking to register a long awaited win, the game got off to a quick start with Ahmed a constant threat throughout, testing the opposition keeper on a number of occasions. His two goals were taken well and with Tino’s struggling in the goals department in recent weeks, they were unable to claw anything back from the encounter. Three points for JackHammer lifts them above their opponents into sixth spot, and with the second best defence in the league, it looks like building from the back could be the way forward for the league debutants. Later in the night, JackHammer played a second game due to fixture congestion and eased to another three points, this time defeating bottom side Team NewBees.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kabir Bashir plays in the Monday night league and was able to help Team Warriors to the SLUK Cup trophy last week with a number of penalty saves and clean sheets throughout the tournament.

Old Bacca Boys 3-1 Al-Aqsa
Old Bacca Boys are up to third spot after a commanding 3-1 victory over Al-Aqsa moved them to just three points off the summit. Al-Aqsa have been performing well this season, picking up four victories from their nine games so far, yet they were unable to handle the firepower of their opponents on Thursday. Shafran Hussain and Faisal both got their names on the scoresheet before the inform Safraz Akhtar rounded off the scoring for the victors with a fine finish. A reply from Rashid Ahmed proved to be only consolation as the league’s top scorers took their tally up to 19 for the campaign at the expense of Al-Aqsa. Defeat sees the pre-season underdogs slip to a respectable fifth in the table, just three points off their opponents. MOTM: Safraz Akhtar (Old Bacca Boys)
Jubodhol 0-0 Borussia Teeth
Top of the table Jubodhol took on second place Borussia Teeth in what can only be classed a bore draw, with both team creating very little throughout the game. Abdur Razzak for Borussia produced some fine saves throughout and was the only standout player in a contest which Jubodhol will feel they could have snatched all three points from. The current league leaders struggled to find the form that has propelled them to the top of the standings and will be disappointed to have dropped two points against a resilient side. Despite the slip up, the league leaders remain two points clear at the top of the table, whilst the Teeth slip down to third after the result. MOTM Abdur Razzaq (Borussia Teeth)
Super Six 2-0 NFA
Goals from Wasim Rashid and Raza Rafique guided Super Six to just their second victory of the season as they defeated the struggling NFA by two goals to nil. Last season NFA were one of the league’s two runaway leaders and eventually had to settle for a runners-up spot just behind Hyde Park. Fast forward to the current campaign and NFA are a shadow of that side, slipping to third from bottom and registering just two wins from their nine games this year. Rashid and Rafique’s strikes heaped more misery on the league’s draw specialists who are now a massive 10 points off top, halfway through the season.

POTENTIAL: Adil Rashid should be handed his Test debut according to Michael Vaughan
Former England captain says bowler deserves Test debut
Bradford-born spin bowler, Adil Rashid, had a season to remember last year, lifting the LV= County Championship with Yorkshire and taking an impressive 46 wickets in total. Now, with the new county championship season just underway, it seems things could look even brighter for the 27year-old with a former England captain tipping him to represent the national side. Speaking on BBC Five Live, Michael Vaughan says Rashid could be just the man England need when bowling against
West Indies in Barbados next week. “He might bowl four spells in a day and two and a half of them might look utter rubbish,” he said. “But that spell and a half might be the difference. That's why you pick him. “If you're not going to play him on a wicket like this or in Barbados next week, I don't see when he will ever be trusted for England in a Test match. I think the surface will suit his bowling. “It took England a long time to get
wicketkeeper Jos Buttler into the side because he might not have been able to play the swinging ball. What about looking at all the things the guy can bring? “Alex Hales can't get into the one-day side because he struggles against a bit of spin and the ball coming back into him, but what about the ball which he can whack out of the ground?” Rashid is currently on tour with the England team but is yet to feature with the ball as he aims to continue his impressive career to date.
Batsman Ankit Keshri dies Indian cricket batsman Ankit Keshri died early Monday 20th April, three days after suffering a head injury in a freak accident on the field during a one-day match in the eastern city of Kolkata. Twenty-year-old Keshri was hospitalised on 17th April after colliding with a teammate while trying to catch a ball during the match between the local East Bengal and Bhowanipore teams. "He was not breathing, so I gave him CPR, only then he started breathing," East Bengal teammate Shibsagar Singh said. The players rushed Keshri to the intensive care unit at Kolkata's AMRI Hospital, but he was later moved to the general admission unit before his family transferred him to Nightingale Hospital for more specialised treatment. His father, Raj Keshri, said his son had been talking on Sunday, but still had a fever and nausea.
"I don't know why he was transferred to a general bed from ICU," he said. Dr. Arpan Chowdhury said Keshri suffered a heart attack early Monday and died a few hours later. Keshri was considered an upand-coming talent on the Indian cricket scene. The right-hander was captain of the Bengal Under-19 team, and was shortlisted for India's under-19 team for the 2014 Colts World Cup. Retired cricket star Sachin Tendulkar expressed sorrow over the death of Keshri, ‘a promising career aborted by an unfortunate incident on field,’ he said in a Twitter message. The highest elected official in West Bengal state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also wrote on Twitter that she was ‘saddened, shocked with the news of young cricketer Ankit's death... my condolences and prayers’.

Giving it a ‘TRY’ A Bradford school is actively highlighting the inclusivity of Rugby League as they push ahead with plans to set up their first all girls side this term - with a little help from the pros of course. Year Seven and Eight students from Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College were greeted by a Rugby League pioneer last week as the first Asian female player was welcomed to the school. Saima Hussain broke down her own barriers on the way to forging a career in the sport, going on to represent England at international level. Now, working in partnership with Keighley Cougars head coach, Paul March, Saima – sports development officer at Bradford Youth Development Partnership (BYDP), is coaching 11 and 12-year-olds in the sport she loves.
During the timetabled PE lessons the sporty children are trained and encouraged to have positive attitudes towards sport, with Saima sharing her own stories from throughout her career. Lee Allington, faculty leader head of PE at Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College said everyone involved with the coaching was excited about the prospect of setting up a team. “Our aim is to change perceptions and show people how girls can contribute to this sport,” he said. “Our pupils have been very enthusiastic, especially meeting the role model Saima who represented England. “We’re very much looking forward to creating our own team and in time competing nationally in what is the Rugby League schools
