Sikhs take to the streets for colourful march for annual celebration By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Thousands of Sikhs across the world took part in the annual Vaisakhi celebrations last weekend as towns and cities were painted orange in honour of the founding of Khalsa. Across Yorkshire Sikhs celebrated the event by partaking in marches and sharing traditional free food and drink with local community members. In Leeds a special event was held at The Sikh Temple where local dignitaries joined in the processions which saw communities come together. Member of the temple’s managing committee, Prem Singh Duggal, explained what the celebrations meant to him and how it helped unite local residents. “It is an important annual celebration which marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Khalsa in 1699,” he said. “Last weekend we had our own celebration which anybody was free to join in, marking the special

day. “Guests were entertained with free food and councillors, MPs and the Lord Mayor were all invited down to join in with young and old. “It was good to see so many people embrace the day.” Elsewhere, in Bradford, a special

march commenced from the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Dev Ji on Usher Street. Members of the Sikh community visited all six temples in the city, guided by their holy flag, the Nishab Sahib on a day where thousands once again gathered to

mark the occasion. The celebration of Vaisakhi takes the form of continuous reading of the Sikh Scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, over a period of three days. That is followed by the recitation of sacred hymns before the service finally ends with a final prayer for the good and well-being of the whole of humanity, and the serving of sacramental food. Cover story continued The University of Bradford first year engineering student, 21-year-old Aamir Qudeer, mysteriously went missing without trace on Wednesday 26th February. He had missed lectures shortly before he went missing, but there were no other signs that he was unhappy or in trouble. The last sighting of Aamir had been in Leeds to board a train to Liverpool and the last sighting of him on CCTV was at about 7pm that evening leaving the city's Lime Street station. Nobody had seen or heard from him since. His distraught parents, from Leeds, Zatoon and Abdul Qudeer, of Scott Hall Road, said his disappearance was completely out of character. His disappearance was being treated as a ‘high priority missing person’s case’ by Bradford police. This week Detective Inspector Benstead told the court that Merseyside Police were contacted at 8.52am on Sunday, 13th April, after a body was washed up on the riverbank on the Grassendale Esplanade, an area approximately six miles from

Liverpool city centre. Emergency services recovered the body and officers found two phones, later confirmed to contain sim cards used by Mr Qudeer, and a wallet containing a driving licence and student card, both with positive photo IDs, alongside bank and national insurance cards. After hearing evidence Mary Burke, Assistant Bradford Coroner, said she was “satisfied” the identity of the body was that of Mr Qudeer and released the remains to the family for a funeral to take place. Bradford Council has installed its first electric vehicle charging point at Jacob's Well car park with grant funding from the Government Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). Low emissions vehicles, such as electric cars, will assist the Council’s aim to cut air pollution and CO2 emissions from road transport as well as reduce noise pollution. Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment and Sport, said: “The best way to encourage people to use electric

vehicles is to try and provide handy charging points in the district. “Encouraging the use of electric cars is one of the key features of our Low Emissions Strategy which is one of the first in the country designed to reduce air pollution and improve health long-term.” Electric vehicles are also cheap to run, costing around 4p per mile in electricity. Bradford council recently announced that they are to trial the use of a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle as a pool car for staff travelling on business across the district.

Leeds, had been making repeated pleas to the public to come forward with information on his disappearance. They had been rallying in Leeds, Bradford and Liverpool. Amir’s death is not being treated as suspicious. Funeral prayers were held for Mr Qudeer at the Leeds Islamic Centre on Wednesday 16th April. Messages of condolences continue to be left on social media sites set up by his family when Aamir first went missing seven weeks ago. Shortage of schools in Halifax

Two local childcare providers have won contracts from Calderdale Council to run the Children’s Centre Service. Halifax Opportunities Trust and North Halifax partnership were awarded the contracts after the Council invited bids to run the service through a competitive tender process. The Council currently spends over £5 million per year on this service. Calderdale’s Children’s Centre Service includes managing the 21 centres, which provide a range of services for young children and their families. This can include nursery provision and access to the Family Support Service for parents who want extra help, midwives, health visitors and even job advice.

Regeneration time

A major regeneration scheme and construction of a railway station at Kirkstall is set to forge ahead. A new riverside community of affordable housing, office space and shopping and leisure facilities is planned for the former Kirkstall Forge site. The proposals for the new station form part of a wider scheme to transform the historic site into a thriving family-friendly community with more than 1,000 new homes. It's estimated that the development will create around 2,400 new jobs. It will also bring about £400m of private sector investment and an estimated £5m per year in local retail spend.

A family man, who suffered a cardiac arrest whilst playing football with friends last year, has said he was ‘delighted’ to see the sport facility install their own defibrillator following his serious incident. 42-year-old Tair Bashir, from in collapsed Rotherham, December after struggling to breathe at the city’s Lucozade

For 20 minutes his teammates, Amir Afzal, of Duke Street Medical Centre, and Mehrban Ghani, of White Rose Medical Practice, heroically performed CPR non-stop on their friend whilst fellow GP, Ashrif Akram, held the head of Mr Bashir. The Rotherham man is now recovering at home and still has at least four weeks left on a cardiorehabilitation programme before he can contemplate going back to work. Yet it could have been much worse for Mr Bashir had it not been for the knowledge of his friends who he thanks for saving his life. “If these guys hadn’t exerted the efforts that they did, if they had decided to quit five minutes sooner, I don’t know what would have happened and I may not be

here now,” he said following the incident. Earlier this month, Mr Bashir paid a visit to the premises for the first time since his incident and said he was encouraged to see progressive steps being made. He added: “It’s great to see that they have finally got one (defibrillator) and I popped up the other day to see it for myself. “Hopefully they will never have to use it but it is important to have it there. “Personally I think they should be more common place because at the end of the day it can save somebody’s life so it isn’t really any different to something like a fire extinguisher. “I’ve been looking on the internet and there are petitions out there asking government to legislate that public places have defibrillators which is an encouraging thing to see.” Alex Tarratt, manager of the Sheffield Power League, said he was more than happy to install the device and hoped other places would follow suit. He said: “After Tair’s cardiac arrest we decided that it would only be beneficial to have defibrillator on site so if an incident like this does happen again we are prepared. “I would urge other venues to do the same because if something as small as this could save a life then it is a very worthy investment.”

The Muslim ‘takeover’ of Birmingham schools investigation moves to Bradford An anonymous leaked document last month claimed an alleged plot to oust twelve Birmingham head teachers to make their schools more suitable to accommodate Islamic principles. The investigation into ‘hard-line Islamist takeover’ of schools has widened to Bradford, with a total of some 25 schools now under the spotlight. The 25 schools being looked at include primaries, secondaries and academies. At the centre of the controversy was Tahir Alam,

the chair of Governors for Park View High School, blamed for instigating ‘Operation Trojan Horse’ which claimed that Muslim extremists would takeover certain organisations. The document, whose author is unknown and whose claims are unattested, allegedly argued that schools were “corrupting children with sex education, teaching about homosexuals, making their (Muslim) children say Christian prayers and mixed swimming and sports." The story hit headlines in

national newspapers leading Birmingham Council and even Education Secretary Michael Gove to call for further inquiry and investigations into the allegations. Birmingham City Council said it had received more than 200 reports in relation to its inquiry. The reports to the council include emails and calls from staff, parents and governors. Tahir Alam was shocked to hear about the claims and believes that he has been the victim of a malicious attack.

Any reference to me is a malicious fabrication and completely untrue," said Tahir Alam. Park View High School was one of twelve schools to be investigated, all of whom pre-dominantly have a high percentage of Muslim student intake. The school gained ‘outstanding’ in its Ofsted review last year for its high standards and huge turn around in achievements over the years. In 2013 75% of pupils gained 5 A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Maths. Tahir Alam questioned then why someone would advocate a ‘takeover’ when the school is doing perfectly well? “This is an absurd idea. These schools are graded as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. It is preposterous to suggest that Park View is somehow seeking to ‘take over these schools via the Academies programme" The allegations were further fuelled by a former teacher, who was dismissed in 2003 from Park View School, Michael White said its

board of governors was ‘taken over by a Muslim sect’ in 1993 and that he was ‘forced out’ after he challenged governors' attempts to ban sex education and stop the teaching of non-Islamic faiths in religious education classes. Dave Hughes, a Park View Trustee and Governor at Park View School for over 15 years, challenged these allegations. “Unfortunately some of those former staff members who are now sharing fictitious allegations with the media are the very same staff whose performance and expectations of pupils proved that they weren’t along for the journey”. Over 48% of Birmingham School students come from Ethnic minority backgrounds, 38% of which are Muslim by faith. Despite a large majority only 10% of the 100 schools run in Birmingham have head teachers who are Muslim. Tahir Alam has been surprised by the heavy handedness shown in the inspections carried out in schools, citing it as unprecedented on how such action can be taken on the grounds of an un-verified report. “I have worked voluntarily as a school governor since

If we had we would have investigated it openly and thoroughly.” The leader of Birmingham City Council, Sir Albert Bore said the city council had spoken to local authorities in both Manchester and Bradford. "There are certainly issues in Bradford which have similarities with the issues being spoken about in Birmingham," he said. Sir Albert claimed he was frustrated with the two-tier schools system in which academies operate outside the local authority's control and report directly to the DfE. "We do not have the relationship with academies as we do with the community schools," he said.

We would like the inquiries to report back before forming opinion of what has happened and what we should do going forward. “Birmingham has a rich and diverse population who will look at the allegations and demonisation of their fellow citizens as an insult and this may have lasting damage on the education standards of all children. I urge everyone to remain calm, allow both the City Council and DFE inquiries to complete their investigation before jumping to conclusions.”

A busy mother from Huddersfield completed the gruelling 26-mile course of the London Marathon last weekend and helped raise hundreds of pounds for her chosen charity. Satpal Sharma, 36, conquered the route in just over four hours as she raised funds on behalf of Arthritis Research UK – a charity which she holds close to her heart. Spurred on by her mother, who has suffered from osteoarthritis for many years, Satpal crossed the line with her two-year-old daughter, Mia, in her arms. Despite feeling ‘exhausted’ upon completion, the Huddersfield solicitor said it was all worth it, knowing she had help out such a ‘worthy cause’. “My mum is my inspiration,” she explained. “She would never be able to do something like the London Marathon because of her condition but she is the most supportive person. “She is a long time sufferer from osteoarthritis and really inspired me to do the run this year. “Before the big day, it was all hardcore training and I have to

thank all my family for their support as they helped me get through it and get ready to compete. “My mum would be babysitting as well as my husband who would also help me get all the right carbs and pasta inside me so I was fully ready on the day.”

A stunning new gallery showcasing Asian culture in all its wonder and colour was unveiled at a popular Leeds museum earlier this week. In what will be the first major gallery refresh at the museum since its opening in 2008, the fantastic sounds, diversity and culture of Asia was revealed as part of the ‘Voices of Asia’ Exhibition, which opened its doors to the public on Friday April 18 2014 at Leeds City Museum. The title ‘Voices of Asia’ was deliberately chosen to represent the many Asian communities that live within the city, the different languages spoken in the continent, and the passion for

contemporary film that will be incorporated in the new displays. The displays, which have been planned in partnership with local Asian community groups as part of an Advisory Network, will stay in the space for around five years, but will change annually to reflect different projects, themes and world faiths. Visitors have the chance to enjoy and take an unforgettable journey through seven major themes: Faiths & Festivals; Trade & War; Fashion & Style; Music, Dance, Theatre & Film; Eating Out & Eating In and Faith in Focus. Featuring in all of the themes will be a variety of interesting and diverse objects and pieces taken from the Leeds Museum and Galleries collections and also a wide range of donations from the Asian community, partners and city universities. The displays will include a friendly Chinese New Year tiger puppet, a model of the Golden Temple at Amritsar, a huge Chinese temple gong and two painted marble statues, of the Hindu deities Krishna and Radha, purchased from Leeds Hindu Temple. Hello Kitty makes an appearance and some old fashioned rag dolls from Gujarat. As part of the first Faith in Focus, the many facets of Hinduism will also be showcased and celebrated. Researched and developed by the Leeds Museum and Galleries team, who have worked closely with a wide range of local community groups and organisations including South Asian Arts UK, Leeds Hindu Mandir, Hamara, Jamyang Buddhist Centre, Leeds Asian Blind Association and Shantona at Leeds Museum and Galleries, ‘Voices of Asia’ replaces the acclaimed ‘Out of Africa’ gallery which displayed the city’s African collections. A disused site in Leeds, which had become notorious as a fly tipping zone, will get a new lease of life later this year as it is redeveloped into a leisure facility. The abandoned piece of land behind Hovingham Primary School has been unused for several years and had become overgrown, as well as being the focus of much antisocial behaviour and crime such as arson and drug abuse. Now, thanks to the acquisition of funding by local councillors, the refurbishment of the land is expected to be completed by August, and will include a grassed area for a range of sports. Tom Martin-Ball, Community Resident and CATCH Chairman (Community Action to Change Harehills), has been working closely with the project for a number of years and said he was delighted to see progress being made. “After years of hard work and persistence we are now finally at a stage where Harehills will soon have a much needed green space,” he said. “We appreciate all the support from Leeds City Council, the Police and Groundwork Leeds. We hope to make this area a hub for the whole community and I would like to encourage people to get involved with CATCH to help us make a real difference to young people” The project started in 2010 when Police Officers from the Gipton & Harehills Neighbourhood Policing Team led a mass clear-up of the land along with local residents, schools and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. Four years later and the project is finally close to completion, something Chief Inspector Matthew Davison, of the Leeds District Neighbourhood Operations, says will only be beneficial to the local community. He added: “The Hovingham Project and formation of CATCH are fantastic examples of what we can all do to help make positive changes in the area. “The project has helped the police foster better relations with young people and the wider community, and will help us reduce anti-social behaviour once the site is fully developed.” The final funding for the project was secured earlier this year by Gipton and Harehills Councillors Kamila Maqsood, Arif Hussain and Roger Harington. Speaking on behalf of Leeds City Council, Cllr Kamila Maqsood said: “It’s fantastic that the Hovingham Land Project is now underway which will help to provide a much needed sports facility for Harehills. “This is a fantastic example of public and private organisations working together with residents for the benefit of the community. It was great to see the work which has already been completed to clear the site and I look forward to the next stage starting soon.”

With just under 100 days to go until the XX Commonwealth Games begins in Glasgow, Leeds have announced their six Batonbearers selected to carry the Queen’s Baton when it arrives in the city. Amongst them is 25-year-old powerlifter, Ali Jawad, who will act as one of the city’s representatives when the Queen’s Baton Relay tours Leeds on the 12th June, before the games kick off in July. Ali, who suffers from the incurable Crohns disease, has most recently clinched a World Championship title in Dubai earlier this month and competed as part of Team GB’s Paralympic team. As a Batonbearer, the Bramley resident, originally from Lebanon, will take the baton to local landmarks and special events to celebrate the countdown to Glasgow 2014. He said it was an ‘extremely proud’ moment when he got told he had been selected and now hopes to go on and win Gold at the Commonwealth games himself. “I got told that I had been selected to be a Batonbearer around the time of the World Championships earlier this month (6th April),” he said. “It is a real honour for me because I hope to be representing England at the Commonwealth Games later this year. “My final qualifier is next month in Coventry and if successful I will then go on to represent the country which will be fantastic. “Being one of the city’s Batonbearers is something which makes me very proud.” It isn’t the first time that Ali has been selected as a representative of major athletic games having been a torch bearer in London for the Beijing Olympics. On that occasion, the powerlifter says the media coverage was ‘intense’ yet insists that this year’s

Leeds appearance has a special sentimental meaning attached to it. He added: “The one in Downing Street was massive due to the media attention and I had just qualified for my first Paralympics so everything was huge. It was probably the most important leg of the torch relay so that was a great experience. “This Leeds baton is very special to me because it is the Leeds community which has been behind me from day one and helped me get to where I am today. “They have been so supportive over the years and I have them to thank for much of my success.” Ali has represented ParalympicsGB in powerlifting at Commonwealth, European, World and Paralympic Games, most notably the 2012 Paralympics. The highlight of his career was gold at the Asian Open in 2013, with a new European and World record, becoming world ranked number one. Throughout his life he has come through adversity and dreams of one day becoming the first Crohns sufferer to win Gold at any Olympics or Paralympics.

Chapel restoration

Steps are to be taken to make the damaged twin chapel at Dewsbury Cemetery safe following recent bad weather and strong winds. The bad weather has contributed to the deterioration of the listed buildings, one of which is now unsafe. The roof from this chapel is to be carefully removed, and the rest of the building made safe. The works, which are likely to start in the next few weeks, will be carried out in consultation with the council’s conservation officers and are estimated to take a week to complete. Both buildings have been fenced off to prevent unauthorised access and secure the sites. Slates removed from the chapel will be stored for potential future restoration. The council is keen to work with any local community group to determine a practical way forward for the chapels and the cemetery. Asian

Tauheedul Islam Girls School, in Blackburn, received a glowing report from Ofsted inspectors who said the school was in the country’s top one per cent for improving students’ outcomes. Inspectors said the school was led by a ‘strong sense of moral purpose’ and praised its focus on helping the less fortunate. Lead inspector Joan McKenna said the academic achievement in school was also of an incredibly high standard. She said: “Students achieve exceptionally well in this school. The rates of progress made by all groups of students are truly impressive across all subjects. “Because of the outstanding progress, students reach high standards. GCSE results are consistently significantly above the national average in all subjects.” The school has been in the top one per cent of schools in the country for the extent to which it improved students’ outcomes for the last three years. Ms McKenna added: “Students are highly motivated and enthusiastic about their learning.” She said the school’s spiritual focus was a successful element. She said: “Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is of an exceedingly high order because it is regarded as extremely important by leaders and its promotion is integral to the life of the school. “It is the framework within which all else takes place and there are very many examples of students’ outstanding outcomes in these areas. They act to help those less fortunate than they are and have well-developed views on a wide range of ethical and moral issues.” Principal Hamid Patel welcomed the report. He said: “Having an Ofsted inspection is a stressful experience but it was most positive. The inspectors were very impressed and we are proud of our school and what we have achieved.”

Nordic Walking sessions

New evening Nordic walking sessions are planned for Greenhead Park in Huddersfield from 30th April. Nordic walking provides the opportunity for upper body exercise but reduces the stress on knees and other joints. It requires a level of fitness and co-ordination but provides an all-round exercise which uses over 90 per cent of the body’s muscles. The evening Nordic walking session at Greenhead Park will take place every Wednesday from 6pm to 7.30pm and participants should meet at the Bowling Pavilion opposite the bowling greens. Transport Hub at ‘The Green’

Plans for Heckmondwike transport hub will be discussed by the Kirklees Cabinet on 22nd April. The scheme will provide a centralised transport hub for the town to replace current bus stops dispersed round an area known as ‘The Green.’ The new hub, at the North side of The Green, will have four bus stands with shelters and real time departure screens, sheltered cycle stands, a ‘Metro’ sign, and a public area. There will be a bus priority measure to enable buses to enter and exit the site. The transport hub will be designed in accordance with the West Yorkshire transport hub programme which does not provide traditional bus stations but improves travel integration and interchange in an affordable way with the total cost of the scheme expected to be in the region of £650,000.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford was on hand to officially open the city’s latest innovative educational facility earlier this month, as children get to learn all about the importance of recycling. Located at the site of Associated Waste Management (AWM), on Canal Road, the site will act as a one-stop destination for schools and community groups who want to learn about where waste actually goes. The building already processes waste from the surrounding district, utilising innovation led technology to effectively and efficiently separate waste – something people will be now be able to witness first hand. The Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Khadim Hussain, cut the ribbon at the official launch event alongside Group Marketing Manager for AWM, Mike Robinson. Commenting on the potential the site holds for educating children in a proactive manner, Mr Robinson said: “The room is designed to replicate the existing facility at Gelderd Road in Leeds – to provide school and community groups with a demonstration of how and why we should recycle. “The Canal Road site processes the waste from the District, whilst visitors are also able to see the production of refuse derived fuel (RDF) a renewable energy source which when incinerated at power stations generates steam, heat and electricity whilst diverting waste from landfill.” Prior to the launch, AWM ran a competition for local school children to design a message board for the outside of the facility. The winning design was created by 10-year-old Ayesha Hussain, from Frizinghall Primary School, and her artwork is proudly displayed outside the entrance for all to see. Meanwhile, the Lord Mayor also presented certificates to the winner and four runner-ups. World Heritage Weekend

Saltaire, Bradford’s Council’s World Heritage Site, will host its 4th annual World Heritage Weekend with activities and exhibitions on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April 2014. On Saturday 26th April, alpacas from Greenside Farm in Kirkby Lonsdale will be in the grounds of the United Reformed Church, giving visitors the chance to see the animals which provided the wool that made Saltaire. Pupils at a local Leeds school took time out of their academic studies earlier this month to help raise thousands of pounds for educational establishments around the world. Student members of the Hindu and Sikh societies from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) handed over a cheque of £5,000 to a representative from the charity Saraswati Vidyalaya – a service project of The Three R’s Education Trust. ‘Saraswati Vidyalayas’ are one teacher schools in India and Nepal which are helping to transform the lives of children in the south Asian countries by giving them greater access to education. Thanks to the generosity of students at GSAL, five of these new schools can now be built in remote villages of the two countries, with the total amount donated to the cause by the Leeds school now standing at £10,000. The main fundraiser each year is the Diwali show, organised by the Hindu and Sikh student faith leaders, an event which brings the whole community together for an evening of Indian

As well as the Diwali show, a tasty sum is raised each year through curry tastings and cooking demonstrations thanks to the generosity of Mr and Mrs Dabhi of Hansa’s Restaurant in Leeds. Mr Hashmukh Shah is Saraswati Vidyalaya’s coordinator in the UK and was presented with the cheque by Student faith leaders from GSAL’s Hindu and Sikh societies earlier this month. He said he was extremely grateful to see such generosity and explained how crucial such funds are for the charity. Domestic violence It’s common for Asian families to keep things quiet when things are not right in the home

Imagine being beaten by your husband or threatened with deportation and having your children removed from you. Perhaps police show up in response to a call or complaint but you can’t speak their language. How would you deal with family members angry with you for bringing shame to your family or to your community? Domestic violence is vastly underreported in Asian communities for a number of reasons. The language barrier is a huge obstacle as is the great sense of bringing shame to the family. For many Asian women, their entire sense of identity is wrapped up in relationship to their families. Often Asian women will refer to themselves as ‘someone’s wife’ or ‘someone’s mother’. They often don’t introduce themselves or other women by name. Another problem identified is the link between violence and love in some Asian families. Many Asian people grow up in a society or a culture where corporal punishment is acceptable, to a certain degree, such as the misbehaviour of a child. The notion ingrained as time goes along is that, ‘well, daddy/mummy hit me because I was naughty and they wanted to correct me because they love me’.

Now victims of domestic violence in Leeds are being urged to not suffer in silence and take steps to access a wide range of support services available in the city. Working with a range of partners, including West Yorkshire Police and the NHS, Leeds City Council’s Safer Leeds Partnership is providing help in a number of ways to tackle domestic violence, support victims and work with previous offenders. Available 24 hours a day, the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) phone line offers confidential support and advice from trained staff for all victims of abuse aged 16 or older. Callers are assured that they will be listened to and treated with dignity and respect and can be offered access to further services depending on their needs. Depending on personal circumstances, a place in a refuge may also be offered but at no time will pressure be put on any caller to leave their partner or home if they are unsure or do not want to. The Safer Leeds Partnership is also responsible for overseeing enquiries which are made as part of new legislation entitled ‘Clare’s Law’, which enables people to ask police if their partner has a history of domestic violence. The partnership uses a multi-agency approach to respond to women and/or their relatives who enquire about the past domestic violence offences if they are concerned the person may cause harm to a partner. An innovative new pilot project working with men to improve their relationships with their children and partners and reduce their risk at home has also been launched in three areas of Leeds. This is a 17-week programme called ‘Caring Dads’. Councillor Mick Coulson, Leeds City Council’s lead member for community safety said: “We would urge anyone who is experiencing domestic violence to please seek support from the wide range of services available in Leeds. “Nobody should have to suffer in silence, and we would like to reassure anyone who is thinking of contacting us that out trained staff will always listen, never judge and offer the best practical advice and support.” For further help and advice, or if you are from outside the Leeds catchment area, there are also a number of national numbers to call. Healthwatch Bradford celebrate first year’s success

An organisation, which was set up last year to give the public a stronger voice when it comes to healthcare in Bradford, was celebrating earlier this month as it reached it’s one year anniversary. Healthwatch Bradford celebrated its first year of operation at a public event in the city with members of the group’s board celebrating with a special birthday cake. The event was attended by almost 100 people, who had an opportunity to challenge those in charge of health services in the district about what they are doing to improve people’s experiences of GP services. Earlier this year Healthwatch published a report, ‘Invisible at the

Desk’, which shows that although many people get good clinical care from their GP, there is wide variation in standards across Bradford and District, and some groups of people are having particularly bad experiences. At the latest Healthwatch event, speakers from the three local Clinical Commissioning Groups and NHS England responded to questions from members of the public and talked about the actions they will take to improve services. Healthwatch will be following up to tell the public more about what action the local NHS is taking in response to patient opinion, and to make sure that plans lead to better patient experiences. Speaking after the event, Chair of the Healthwatch Board, Javed Khan, said: “After our first year, Healthwatch

Bradford and District is in a strong position to call on health and social care providers to make positive changes for patients, service users and carers across our district. “It was great to see so many members of the public there and actively participating; it was a really good mix of people with representation from all parts of our communities. “Our local Clinical Commissioning Groups and NHS England fielded a strong panel of senior managers and clinicians, indicating that Healthwatch is seen as a force to be reckoned with and that they need to come along and respond to patient opinion. “I’m very proud of the work that Healthwatch staff, volunteers, and the Board have carried out in the first year, and look forward to building on that for the future.”

Bollywood to Bradford

One of Bollywood’s leading animators, Dhananjay Khore, jetted into the UNESCO City of Film to work with students from the Whistling Woods International (WWI) Film School. Offering aspiring filmmakers, animators and photographers at Bradford College the

opportunity to gain valuable insight into the industry, Dhananjay Khore charted his rise from fine art graduate to world-class animator. Speaking during his visit, Dhananjay said: “In 1995 the Russian production company Soviet Multi-film came to India and selected 50 fine art students out of almost 1000 from across the country. I was picked and trained on traditional animation by these legendary animators.” In a first for Bollywood, Dhananjay Khore directed the critically acclaimed first full-length animation feature film in India. The film, ‘Bhagmati – The Queen of Fortune’, a dramatic true love story, received recognition at the Cannes International Film Festival 2003. Dhananjay’s love of animation was sparked by his mother, who first introduced the young fine art student to the genre after she saw an animation clip on television and wanted to share it with her son. Commenting on what makes a good animator, Dhananjay said: “I think it’s important to have really good drawing and visualisation skills, which allows you to imagine and create a story for your audience.”

When asked what has made Dhananjay the successful animator we know today, he replied: “I have very good drawing skills and the ability to transfer those dreams onto paper. Although, in order to be successful in the industry today, it takes more than great drawing and creative skills, you also need to be technically competent too.” Offering advice to people starting out in the industry, Dhananjay said: “Firstly be honest with yourself, don’t try and be something that you’re not. You have to have a real passion for animation. Back in India, students come to me on a daily basis to discuss pursuing a career in animation.” When asked what his favourite animation was, Dhananjay replied: “The Lion King!” During his two-week visit to the UK, Dhananjay has been delivering experimental animation workshops and one to one sessions with students from the Bradford-WWI Film School. Students have been delighted to learn from one of Bollywood’s legendary animators, as Dhananjay’s work consistently dazzles, is technically remarkable and imaginatively astonishing.

Thousands raised for charity by after-school club

Families from all over Bradford visited the Carlisle Business Centre earlier this month as a youth club helped raise more than £2,000 for charity. ‘Raising Explorers’, an Ofsted regulated afterschool learning and childcare club, hosted their own Spring Bazaar in Manningham, with stalls and activities run by students and teachers. The event was organised with the hope of raising funds for the ‘Keep Syria Warm’ campaign which looks to help the millions affected in the warravished country. Children who attend Raising Explorers, which is based at the Carlisle Business Centre, were instrumental in making the day a true success helping to ensure everything ran smoothly. A number of stalls were on show in the special bazaar which included, amongst others, a variety of clothes stalls, a bouncy castle and face painting. Even food stalls were set up to ensure shoppers could try different snacks as well as

food and delicacies ranging from a chocolate fountain to spongy cakes. Entertainment during the event included a performance of Nasheeds by the children; which they had been preparing for in the run up to the event. In total, the event, organised in partnership with Intouch Foundation & al Hikmah project, raised £2,750 for the cause. Hospitals across the UK have been criticised after care watchdog reveals that almost half of all patients feel that hospital food is not good enough, and that some trusts are spending just £2.64 a day on three meals. Bradford ranked ninth on the country’s worst served meals list. NHS hospitals claim their own studies show that 99 per cent of patient meals are rated ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. Now hospitals have been accused of conning the public with bogus claims about the quality and choice of food on offer to patients. Campaigners claim nutrition and quality standards are below those for prisons and Whitehall department restaurants, which must adhere to mandatory levels. In some NHS trusts, such as the Heatherwood and Wexham Park, which serves Ascot, Maidenhead, Slough and Windsor, less than four in ten rated the food as ‘good’, placing it bottom of the league of patient satisfaction. However, a survey of staff at its hospitals rated the food, which is prepared by outside contractors, as excellent. Other low scores were given to the Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent, and the South London Healthcare NHS Trust, which includes Queen Mary’s hospital in Sidcup. The research also reveals that there is little correlation between the amount of money spent on meals and their quality. For example, Heatherwood and Wexham Park trust spends a relatively high figure of £13 a day per patient, yet it came bottom on patient satisfaction. The lowest spending to provide three meals to patients was at the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, where the figure was just £2.94. The trust which spent the most on food was Barts in London at £15.65 a day, however the proportion of patients who rated the food as good was just 48 per cent. The figure at the South Tees trust was £15.47 a day – five times higher than the nearby Gateshead hospitals. At South Tees, the proportion of patients who rated food as good was 60 per cent.

April 2014 - 3rd Edition The damning figures were released by the Campaign for Better Hospital Food, which is supported by 97 organisations, including the Royal College of Physicians, British Heart Foundation and the Patients Association. All are calling on the Government to support a change in the law that would improve all patient meals by requiring them to meet mandatory standards, including quality and nutrition. Campaign co-ordinator, Alex Jackson said that it was time for the Government to come clean about the sorry state of hospital food in England and set mandatory standards for patient meals. Jackson said: “This would only involve extending an existing policy which has seen it set mandatory standards for prison food and food served in government departments, to go alongside those that already exist for school food. “Surely patients recovering in hospital have the same right to good food as government ministers, school kids and prisoners?” The Unison union, whose members work in hospital kitchens, claimed that meals produced inhouse were generally a higher quality than those from outside contractors. Its deputy head of health, Sara Gorton, said: “While costs vary, it is plain that food cooked fresh on hospital premises scores the highest with patients. “Unison is backing calls for set standards for hospital food in England. At the same time we want more hospitals to use kitchens to prepare and cook patient meals instead of bringing in readymeals from outside.” The Department of Health rejected the need for minimum legal standards and said the figures, which relate to 2011-12, were out of date. A spokesman said: “There are many fantastic examples of really good food across the NHS thanks to forward-thinking and innovative staff. “But, we recognise that there is too much variation across the country — that is why we have implemented a tough new inspection programme. “With our army of thousands of patient assessors we will drive up standards and reduce variation in hospital food.” She added: “We support the principle of food standards but do not think that legislation is the right way to proceed.”

A report this week reveals that Bradford, Barnsley, Grimsby, Hull and Doncaster are amongst the ten cities with the worst national figures for youth employment in Britain. Bradford’s 25 per cent unemployment figure for 16-24 year-old puts it as sixth in the country’s top ten cities facing the highest UK youth unemployment crisis. The data processed by The Work Foundation ranks, and maps youth unemployment rates for 16-24 year olds across the UK’s largest towns and cities shows that even in the recovery, almost one in five young people looking for work are unable to find a job. It goes onto reveal that those who leave school with only GCSE level qualifications (or less) are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as those with better qualifications. The youth unemployment problem is so endemic in the UK that even those cities with the lowest rates (around 13%) are still a third higher than the German national average (8.6%) and double that of Germany’s best performing cities (e.g. Hamburg at 5%).

Now authorities are being told that these figures can improve if local services were to work together more effectively. The paper argues that without effective, targeted action from national and local government, businesses, and educators, a generation of young people in these cities will face a bleak future in the labour market. Commenting on the paper, Lizzie Crowley, head of youth unemployment programmes at The Work Foundation, said: “The UK’s youth unemployment crisis continues to affect almost a million young people – even in the recovery. “It is shocking that in some cities almost a third of young people are looking for work but are unable to find it. “Urgent action is needed to ensure young people get the right support to either continue in school, further training or with getting a job. “Central Government’s top-down attempts to tackle the crisis have failed. Local government must now be tasked with setting up Youth Transition Partnerships to bring together schools, colleges, third sector organisations, and local businesses to develop tailored policy responses suitable for each city. National government must also back these partnerships by providing dedicated funding to ensure they can fulfil this duty effectively.”

A Bradford resident has become the first Asian member in 50 years to join the city’s Royal British Legion after signing up in honour of his father. 60-year-old Raja Tariq Mehmood says he is ‘extremely proud’ to wear the 18 medals, obtained by Subah Ali Shan from both British and Pakistan governments, and hopes his new membership will only carry on his father’s legacy. “My father was as beautiful as his name was,” Mr Mehmood said. “It translated into a beautiful morning and I remember him as a fantastic person. “He was very young, about 17, when he first joined the British Indian Navy in 1941. He was with them for about six years until ‘47 when Pakistan became and independent country and so he was then transferred to the Pakistan Navy.” Subah Ali Shan was a highly decorated member of the Navy who collected 18 medals throughout his 39 years of service before finally retiring as a lieutenant commander in 1979. Unfortunately, he sadly passed away just three months later yet Mr Mehmood says it is now up to his family to keep his father’s memory alive. He explained how he joined the Royal British Legion in hope of bringing ‘warranted attention’ to his father’s achievements. “I didn’t know how to make use

of these medals but luckily read an article about somebody honouring their father’s medals so did some research,” he said. “I was put through to a number in London and ended up speaking with the MoD (Ministry of Defence) who then put me in touch with the British Royal Legion, and the next morning I got a call from them saying they wanted to see me. “I went down to the Bradford branch and they said it was a ‘privilege’ to have me and my father’s medals on board.

“I attended my first meeting earlier this week and I loved it, it was very enjoyable. Everybody is so respectful and it is an honour for me to be with them.” Mr Mehmood’s father was awarded five medals from the Royal Navy: Atlantic Star, Pacific Star, War Star, and two Memorial Medals; as well as 13 more from the Pakistan Navy including several for fighting in four wars with India, and a Ten-year, 20year, and 30-year service medal. Mr Mehmood added that he had hoped to carry on his father’s

legacy through joining the forces yet was unfortunately only able to complete one year before having to leave. “It was always a dream of mine to be in the Navy or the Air Force,” he explained. “When I finally joined up in Pakistan I was told a little while later that I had to return to England or lose my citizenship. “I was never able to go back to the services in Pakistan but am extremely proud to be able to wear my father’s medals and keep his legacy alive.”

It’s not every day that one of the world’s most renowned singers pays a visit to your place of work yet for East End PLC, that is exactly what happened earlier this week. On Friday 11th April, hundreds gathered outside the New Birmingham Library for Sartaaj’s Birmingham press conference where he addressed the media and fans ahead of his UK tour. The man with the golden voice will be performing at six venues across the country, with his first date set for Saturday 19th April at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall. Yet before his music is unleashed on his adoring British fans, Sartaaj paid a visit to one of his tour’s sponsors. East End PLC greeted the chart topper on Monday 14th April at the Aston Cross site – the former home of HP sauce which was redeveloped with an £11million investment three years ago – where he was given a tour of the premises

before having a meet and greet with family and friends of the company. The Aston site, together with the West Bromwich premises (opened in 2000), cover a total of 600,000sq/ft, about the size of 30 football pitches and just illustrate the enormity of East End PLC. Sartaaj also met with customers before witnessing the production process of many of the company’s own products first hand. Jason and Jasbir Wouhra, Directors at the national company, were two members of the family who showed Sartaaj round throughout the day and the prior said it was a fantastic experience. “He is a very nice, down-to-earth guy and is of course extremely talented,” he said. “It was a privilege to have him come to our store and share dinner with him in our boardroom. “He was interested to see how all our products were made and appreciated the fact that they are all done on site and produced here in the UK. “We have had a number of celebrities and politicians visit us

but Sartaaj was certainly one of the nicest. “We can’t wait to see him sing live now.” After dinner, and the meet and greet, Jason Wouhra took the musical talent to the New Birmingham Library, where the East End PLC director is also the chair of the advisory board. “Sartaaj has a big interest in the Shakespeare era and as the library has the second largest Shakespeare collection in the world, we thought it would be good for him to visit the site,” he explained. “He was very polite and enjoyed himself, learning about something he has a real interest in.” Sartaaj will be performing in Wolverhampton, Leeds, Glasgow, Leicester, Birmingham and London on his current tour and East End PLC are proud to be one of the tour’s main sponsors.

Currently, the daily recommended amount of salt in the UK is nomore than six grams (just a teaspoon!), whilst the current average salt intake is 8.6g (with many consuming more than this). Despite the recommended amount of salt being six grams, those with high blood pressure should be actively eating less than the specified amount. Excessive salt consumption is one of the largest factors contributing towards high blood pressure; though high blood pressure may not seem as serious as other illnesses, it can be a root cause of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, stomach cancer, osteoporosis and renal failure. Genetics can cause us to be particularly sensitive to too much salt and this is most definitely the case with South Asians. Various studies into South Asian health have determined that those of Indian/Pakistani/Bengali descent are at a higher risk of high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Shockingly, South Asians are 30- 40 per cent more likely to die prematurely from heart disease in comparison to the rest of the UK population and they are six times more likely to have diabetes than the average UK population. In spite of these worrying statistics, reduction of salt in the diets of South Asians is very limited. Whilst the majority of the UK consume (and exceed) their recommended daily amount of salt from processed foods, in the South Asian population, almost all of the salt consumed is added during cooking or at the table. The astronomical amounts of salt that the community have unwittingly incorporated into their diet is masked by the variety of spices that also go into the common curry/fried snack.

A supreme victory for consumers

he Supreme Court in London has delivered judgment ending a 16year dispute for Mr Richard Durkin over a laptop bought from the Aberdeen branch of PC World. In 1998 Mr Durkin bought a laptop for £1,499. He took it home in a sealed box, having been assured that it would contain an internal modem, presumably a rarity at that time. He paid a deposit of £50 to PC World and signed a credit agreement for the balance with HFC Bank (part of the HSBC group) which provided PC World's in-store finance. When he took it home he found that it did not have the promised internal modem, understandably he returned it and asked for his money back and cancellation of the credit agreement without penalty, as he had been promised when he had taken it away. The £50 was eventually returned by PC World, but HFC said he was still required to make loan repayments under the terms of the separate credit agreement he had signed. Because of his unwillingness to pay, the Bank marked his credit record as a defaulting customer. Mr Durkin took his case to court where he claimed that he was wrongly blacklisted for failing to comply with the credit agreement, and as a consequence had been unable to raise a loan to buy a family home. The Sheriff court in Aberdeen agreed with him, that he was entitled to cancel the sale and the credit agreement, and awarded him substantial damages for

the losses flowing from the inability to take out a loan. The Bank appealed and in 2010 Appeal court judges ruled that “the contract of sale and contract of loan were separate agreements." and that he was not entitled to cancel the sort of instore credit agreement on which many individuals, and arguable the whole economy, rely. Mr Durkin then took his case to the Supreme Court seeking a six-figure sum, and has now won a famous victory. Of sorts. Though the court agreed that he was entitled to rescind the credit agreement, a major boost for consumer rights, his damages were confined to injury to his credit resulting from HFC’s breach of its duty of care in the sum of £8,000.00. That is way short of the amount claimed and little reward for the substantial time and costs poor Mr Durkin has had to put in. The decision highlights what happens when customers, through dissatisfaction with the financed product, return it to its place of supply. It also highlights the risks banks face when following procedures in relation to credit reporting. Although the case is Scottish in its origin, the Supreme Court’s judgment enables the ruling to be applied in an English, as well as Scottish, context. Sikh Pound worth £7.63 Billion The British Sikh Report (BSR) is the only strategic document of its kind, aimed at governmental bodies and national institutions alike, which draws attention to the aspirations of the British Sikh community across a range of areas. Compiled by a collective of British Sikh professionals and academics, it is based on quantitative research and will be used to help better understand and meet the various needs of the Sikh community. It is anticipated that the report will assist non-Sikh organisations in working with the current British Sikh population on collaborative projects. Some of the key findings in the report related to the financial strength of British Sikhs. The report found that two-thirds of British Sikh households (66%) have pretax incomes above £40,000, and over a third (34%) have a household income in excess of £80,000. size of the British Sikh household, the report values the Sikh contribution to the British economy at a staggering £7.63billion. In terms of wealth and assets, home ownership is very high amongst British Sikhs with 87% of households owning at least a portion of their home. 30% of British Sikh households own their homes outright and only 9% rent their properties. A mere 1% of British Sikhs claim Housing Benefit. According to the report, British Sikhs are clear net contributors to the British economy and have a strong entrepreneurial drive, with about one in three British Sikh families (34%) owning a business in the UK. A man who pinned a 15-yearold Asian boy to the ground and sliced open his cheek in a racist attack, has gone on the run after a four-day special release from prison. Jerry Monerville, 47, of Claremont Square, off Pentonville Road, Islington is currently serving an eight-year sentence for attacking the teenager with an accomplice, Shane Doyle, 26. The boy had been sitting alone on a park bench in Bethnal Green, east London in November 2010. The vile pair attacked the 15year-old from behind and Monerville sat on the boy and continued to slash his face twice with a knife. When the boy asked why they had attacked him they spat back: “It’s cos you’re a f***ing Paki” and kicked him before they left. Now Monerville, who was released on Friday April 11th has failed to return to prison at 3.30pm on Tuesday April 15th. It has not yet been revealed why he was allowed out for four days. It’s been speculated that he may be in hiding in Herne Bay, Kent. The area's crime commissioner has slammed the force over the delays to inform the public, after promising to tighten up security following similar blunders when another convict went on the run last year. This is the third escape in three years. Mr Passmore said he would be challenging Suffolk Chief Constable Douglas Paxton about the embarrassing blunder and will be seeking cast-iron guarantees that errors are not made in the future. He said: “I was given an assurance by the Deputy Chief Constable last July that communications to the public in these situations would be reviewed. “Clearly this is not working and that is completely unsatisfactory. “I will now take this up with the Chief Constable again and seek a cast-iron guarantee that such public information is released without delay.” Police have tried to trace Monerville without success and have issued an appeal to find him. He is described as white, of thin build with brown eyes and black hair, and has connections with Herne Bay. Police say anyone who sees Monerville should call 101, but should not approach him or take any other action.

New tests for takeaway ‘lamb’

Do you really know what is in your food? Well new tests which are soon to be introduced by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) will certainly give you a clearer picture of what you are eating. The FSA announced earlier this week that it will begin a new round of tests on lamb takeaway meals from restaurants across the UK after the consumer watchdog found evidence of cheaper substitutes such as beef and chicken. The FSA said local authorities were being asked to test 300 samples from restaurants providing takeaway meals and report their findings to the agency with the sampling set to start at the beginning of May. The agency said mislabelling of food could result in fines of up to £5,000 and that businesses that are found to deliberately mislabel food could face prosecution. An FSA review of local authority sampling data from July to December 2013 found that 43 out of 145 samples of lamb takeaway meals contained meat other than lamb. Other meat species identified included chicken and turkey yet no samples were found to contain horse meat, it said. Last year a scandal broke around Europe when traces of horse were found in frozen burgers sold in Irish and British supermarkets.

A teenager from London said he was ‘very excited’ after hearing of the news that he was to be greeted personally by the British Prime Minister following his work with the country’s flood relief efforts. 16-year-old Zafar Ahmad, from Southfields, London, finally met David Cameron on Monday 7th April at 10 Downing Street. After picking up the ‘Flood Hero’ award, alongside four other volunteers, live on ITV’s Daybreak, and receiving a cheque of £5,000 by Sir Richard Branson to go towards his chosen charity, Zafar was invited to the historic home of British politics. During his half-term holidays in February, the enthusiastic volunteer joined others from Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), a UK youth charity, to

assist with the wider flood relief efforts being carried out across the country, including the Staines, Chertsey, and Somerset areas. Zafar spent almost every day helping however he could, whether filling and delivering sandbags, or helping with the massive clean-up operation of the St. Paul's Church in Staines. Speaking before he finally met Mr Cameron, he said: “I'm a bit nervous about attending the reception, but at the same time very excited to meet the Prime Minister. “Young people are often highlighted for all sorts of negative reasons, but I would like to assure the Prime Minister that there are many positive young Brits who enjoy helping others on a daily basis.” He added: “I don't consider what I did to be special, but simply fulfilment of my religious duty as a British Muslim to serve my country. “I would like to thank ITV for

young people across the UK.” Zafar’s volunteering efforts do not stop here as he is already looking forward to raise more money to assist with the massive clean-up required up and down the country. Barber, Karim Nabbach, said embassy officials from the

country turned up at the salon earlier this week questioning why an image of their leader was being used in the advertising campaign. He explained: “We put up posters for an offer for men's haircuts through the month of April. Obviously in the current news there has been this story that North Korean men are only allowed one haircut. “We didn't realise but the North Korean embassy is a 10-minute walk from the salon. The next day

we had North Korean officials pop into the salon asking to speak to the manager. “He (the manager) said ‘listen this isn't North Korea, this is England, we live in a democracy so I'm afraid you're going to have to get out of my salon’.” The manager later contacted police in regard to the matter and was told embassy officials had also contacted the authorities yet no action was to be taken. “We haven't had any trouble

Police now searching for the suspect's brother after neighbours revealed they have both been convicted of cannibalism before A man in Pakistan who is a known cannibal has been arrested after the head of a three-year-old boy was found in his house. Police raided Mohammad Arif, 35 and his 30-year-old brother Mohammad Farhan's home, in the Dariya Khan, a town 180 miles south of Islamabad after neighbours complained about the stink of rotting flesh. Mohammad Arif Ali has allegedly admitted to the crime just a year after being freed from prison for an earlier act of cannibalism. He and his brother Farman were jailed for just two years in Pakistan

for stealing the body of a dead woman from her grave in 2011. They admitted chopping off her lower limbs and making them into meat curry at their home in Darya Khan. As Pakistan has no law against cannibalism, Arif was sentenced under the law of desecration of the grave, for which he served just two years - a case which shocked the country. Both brothers were married, but their wives deserted them before the 2011 case. Police are now trying to find Farman to question him about the latest find.

discovered. He added: "In the middle of the room, I saw a cooking pot which was half full of meat curry. Nearby was a wooden board, a butcher's axe and a large kitchen knife. Bits of fat clung to the board and the blade of the axe. "It still gives me the creeps; they had chopped off one of her legs below the knee, and the other near the shin.

"The rest of the body was intact. The curry was made from those parts." They admitted to chopping off her limbs and using them for meat curry. Police said the pair had dug up, and eaten over 100 corpses from the local graveyard. Police are now searching local graves for signs of disturbance. The identity of the child is not yet known.

Pakistani Taliban plot to assault Islamabad The Pakistani Taliban will coordinate with Islamist activists at major seminaries in or near the capital, Islamabad, to launch attacks if peace talks with the government fail, police said in a report. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took power last year promising to end Pakistan's insurgency through negotiations. Talks got going in February but have achieved little. The Pakistani Taliban, allied with but separate from the Afghan Taliban, are fighting to overthrow the government and impose a strict version of Islam on the nucleararmed nation of 180 million people. They called a ceasefire beginning on March 1 to facilitate the talks but it officially ended on Thursday. It is unclear if the ceasefire will be extended. Police said in the report that two well-known seminaries would support attacks in the capital and its twin city of Rawalpindi if the talks break down and the military moves against Taliban bases in areas bordering Afghanistan. sacrificing oneself for jihad", police said in the report. The other is run by Fazlur Rehman Khalil, who is on a U.S. terror watch-list and signed a 1996 fatwa or decree from Osama bin Laden in which he declared war on the United States.

At Khalil's seminary, commanders provide "jihadi weapons training classes" to students from the ethnic Pashtun tribal areas which have long been militant recruiting grounds, police said. The two seminaries also host fighters who come to carry out attacks and help with "all last minute preparations", they said. Militant fighters have set themselves up with activists at hardline mosques in Islamabad before. In 2007, more than 100 people were killed when security forces assaulted the Red Mosque in the heart of the capital after well-armed fighters from the tribal areas and followers of the mosque's radical clerics running a Taliban-style movement refused to surrender. Police and government spokesmen declined to comment on the report but security officials who requested not to be identified said the information was correct. One police officer said 20 seminaries in Rawalpindi were being investigated for similar Taliban links.

By day they work in a supermarket, practicing their vocals whilst on the job, and by night hit the studios to record and produce their tracks. Origins

The duo’s artistic expression began at high school in the style of beat boxing. “We were inspired by beat boxing artist Faith SFX and then ventured into performing for audiences at local events, talent shows, family fun days and Charity events” said Nabeel. They beat boxed to popular chart music tracks from singers like the late Michael Jackson, Usher, Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake. “Mixed audiences appreciated our unique style. We even applied to audition for Britain’s Got Talent in 2010 but never got through the initial stages,” highlighted Nabeel.

Driving force

In 2011, life took a tragic course when the twins mother passed

away. This had a profound impact on their thinking and outlook about life, its meaning, its purpose. “It brought us more close to our religion, Islam,” said Nabeel. In 2012 they swapped their Beat boxing to commercial songs to Urdu nasheeds sung by famous traditional artists from Pakistan. They came up with the name ‘Deewane Mustafa Twins’ and worked to find a new way of portraying their love for Nasheeds (Islamic Songs) to the younger generation. They are huge fans of great singer/songwriter Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Nasheed artist Sami Yusuf for their huge contribution to Sufi music. They put all their energy into writing and practicing Nasheed’s, and developing something new, unique and innovative.

The Start

Aided with some musical experience from school classes, they began working on some melodies by using existing Islamic poetry. They came came up with ten tracks and decided to approach a record label to hear their work. “We approached DJ Chino and presented our tracks. We were fresh and we had no knowledge of music production. He was shocked with our beat boxing because

nasheeds are not normally beatboxed to!” laughed Nabeel DJ Chino, known for working with big names in the Asian Music scene immediately signed them up for five years with his record label, High Tech Music.

Recognition

They recorded their Album early in 2013 in Alum Rock, Birmingham at Frantic Studios and released their Feature track named

after their album “Ya Rasoolullah” in July 2013 followed by a second track release “Rabbana”, both of which have been huge successes. The group has received appreciation internationally as well as nationally receiving messages of support from Pakistan, France, Poland, South America and even West Indies! The Duo will be releasing their next two videos for singles ‘Chamak tujhse’ and ‘Mustafa

jaaney rehmat’ before Ramadhan in June. “We are already working on our second album! We’re going to make the music a little softer using traditional instruments from this album based on feedback we’ve received from our fans.” said Nabeel. The 2008 DKR shares an unmistakable family resemblance with Peugeot’s road-going crossover, albeit with more muscular forms, and more imposing overall proportions that have been honed to meet the challenge that lays ahead. Its spectacular lines are the fruit of close cooperation between the experts at Peugeot’s Style Centre and their colleagues at Peugeot Sport’s Design Department, and the newcomer’s likeness with the production version is quite astonishing! Far more than just another styling exercise, the 2008 DKR features an aggressive stance dictated by the technical constraints associated with its mission. Indeed, Peugeot Sport’s design team had to answer one particularly fundamental question at a very early stage concerning the new beast’s transmission: four-wheel or twowheel drive? In the end, they’ve opted for an approach that was quite different to

that of the competition. Given the off-road capability of two-wheel drive transmission and its ability to run on sand, that’s the choice they ultimately went for. It enabled them to fit bigger wheels which also benefit it from more suspension travel. The 2008 DKR consequently sits on 37-inch diameter Michelin tyres (almost 94cm)! These considerations naturally had a significant knock-on effect with regard to the work of Peugeot’s

stylists, but the four-strong design team rose enthusiastically to the challenge to pen the new Lion that will very soon take on the unique challenges posed by cross-country rallying. What lies beneath the bodywork remains a secret for the moment, but the 2008 DKR’s breath-taking forms are sure to cause a stir even before the new car starts to kick up dust as it begins to be put through its paces.

Mercedes tight-lipped about its SLC AMG deemed a ‘Porsche 911 Turbo contender’ By Anush Ansari

With the SLS production ending this year the final details of the new SLC AMG are soon to be revealed

Mercedes-Benz is still keeping tightlipped about its Porsche 911 contender, rumored to be called the SLC, however spy shots gives us our best look yet at the sporty coupe. Production of the marque’s flagship sports car – the SLS will be ending in July this year, and what we hear is that development of the new SLC (codenamed C190) is steadily progressing. Some are

suggesting that the new car could be called the Mercedes GT instead. From what we can tell, the SLC will wear a face similar to recent Mercedes products with large, LEDtrimmed headlights, aggressive fascia air inlets and an upright grille. More importantly, the SLC's rump is coming into focus with its large hatch and integrated exhaust outlets, but you can also make out the shape of the horizontally oriented taillights. There are still plenty of uncertainties about the SLC/GT, however its been predicted that it will use a new 4.0litre, modular V-8 with a twin-turbocharger setup. This engine is touted to deliver about 500 horsepower, pitting it against the mighty 911 Turbo. Two more engines will be available on the SLC/GT AMG, a 5.5litre twin-turbo V-8 and a Black Series version with a 6.2-litre V8 with just under 600 horsepower. According to sources, the new Mercedes-Benz is to be unveiled at the German Grand Prix later this year and will go on sale in 2015.

So, following a series of rigorous and renowned British Boxing Board of Control tests, probably the most stringent testing procedures in the world, including various MRI and MRA brain scans, eye and blood testing, a full physical body medical, and finally a stringent and gruelling interviewing process, Zahid turned pro.

Zahid, alongside his amateur stablemate Reece Cartwright, this year’s 2014 ABA Middleweight champion, passed and was accepted by the British Boxing Board of Control and consequently turned professional. Then began the fight preparation for their debuts. This involved training two to three times a day, a strict dietary regime, the relocation to various gyms in Manchester and Sheffield for tough sparring and learning of new techniques all under the observation of Brendan and Dominic Ingle and master trainer Joe Pennington. Training alongside the likes of World Title contender Kell Brook, the recently crowned European and British champion Kid Galahad, and the big punching Middle Weight prospect, Manchester’s Mark Heffron helped ensure the two fighters

were at the required level to compete at this level and this sort of company can only put The Magic Man and Reece Cartwright in good stead for the future. After the disappointment of Zahid’s first professional debut contest in Sheffield, which had been cancelled due to numerous factors, the debut was rescheduled for Saturday 5th April 2014 in Manchester at the Wythenshawe Forum. Zahid’s small following of loyal Yorkshire fans, travelled over the Pennines to support their man and boy were they in for a magical treat. The flamboyant Magic Man Zee entered the ring to rapturous applause and cheers from the crowd as if the Yorkshire man was a home fighter. Totally relaxed and focussed, he set about his work. For two rounds the selfproclaimed ‘Magic Man’ out boxed and out classed the tough Lithuanian challenger, Simas Volosinas from the off, with his stinging jabs, punching power and slick foot work. As the fight went on Hussain dished out punishing and hurtful combinations from all angles at high speed, whilst the tempo and pace of the fight were tremendous. His in and out tactics served him well and gave him a two round head start in the fight. However as the fight moved into the second half, the high pace started to take its toll on Hussain and Volosinas launched his attacks from the third round onwards catching the Magic One clean and hard for the first time, the shock of the punch rocking Zahids head back clearly. Volosinas, a veteran of 20 fights,

and a boast of never being knocked out as a professional fighter, almost lost that record as the Magic Man regrouped after his opponent’s perfect shot. Zahid came straight back with a booming right hand power punch and quickly switching stances to deliver a massive left hook followed by a three punch combination almost flattening the Lithuanian in his tracks but could not finish the job as time in the round ran out at the end of the third. By the fourth Hussain was tiring but so too was Volosinas due to the fast pace of the contest. But the Magic Man Zee kept Simas at long range, peppering him with quick jabs for a shut out 40 / 36 points victory over this tough Lithuanian campaigner. Interviewed after the fight at ringside Magic Man Hussain said: “It was a great fight and I loved every minute of it. But boy was he tough, credit to Simas he hung in there and just kept coming and coming and coming. “All the hard sparring and fitness

training and preparation paid off. To be honest after the first round I knew my skill set was far superior to his but this is professional boxing and I had to respect his power as he did catch me clean on the jaw in the third round. “However I proved I was well conditioned and was able to take his power shot. After that I stuck to the game plan which was to out box and frustrate him right to the last bell which I did clearly with my movement and punching. “I’m really happy with my first performance as a professional fighter and I felt good in there. “Now that I have got the first fight under my belt I want to fight on a regular basis building up to the big fights and continue as planned to my ultimate dreams being to win the British Featherweight title and also to fight in America, Las Vegas and New York like my idols Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Pauli Malignaggi. “This was truly a special night for me not only did I win but my stable mate Reece Cartwright,

On the 11th May 1985, 54 Bradford City supporters, and two Lincoln City fans, lost their lives after a fire ravaged through Valley Parade. Since that date, the victims of the blaze have never been forgotten with respects paid every year to mark the anniversary of the disaster. This weekend, the 29th Valley Parade Memorial Tournament will be held at Bradford Council’s Marley Activities and Coaching Centre between the dates of 19th and 20th April. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, will be at the tournament to watch teams from the Bradford district,

Lincoln and across Europe, compete for trophies. Among the teams competing will be under 12's and under 14's teams from Bradford City, Bingley, Sandy Lane, BPA, Campion, Queensbury, BD3 United and Silsden, whilst two centre of excellence teams from Lincoln, and a team from the German city of Hamm, which is twinned with Bradford, will also compete. The memorial tournament was the brainchild of former Bradford Council chief recreation officer Howell Williams, and has been held every year since 1986. Lifelong Bradford City fan and Bradford Council employee Carl Dalton, who was in the main stand on the day, took over organising the event in 2000 and has been instrumental in the 'friendship

‘Focus on the sport’ Claims that football in Asia is suffering due to politically-led AFC Football in Asia is something which many sports fans in the continent just turn a blind eye to, focussing instead on the major big-spending European leagues. However, with the sport’s reputation constantly being reviewed by its ruling body, calls have now been made from the highest order to stop concentrating on the politics of the game and spend more time developing the sport. Earlier this week, Asia’s FIFA vicepresident, Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, made the comments in regard to the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) president, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. The criticism comes just days after comments from Sheikh Salman in a campaign for himself to be automatically elected as the next vice-president for FIFA’s Asian board. Prince Ali, who has held the position since 2011, said he believes such talk is only hampering the progress of football in the continent. “It is unfortunate that the direction taken by the AFC President and other AFC officials is one driven purely by politics instead of focusing our energies

and valuable time on improving the game in Asia,” he said in an open letter to the Asian football community. “[The AFC leadership should instead address] the myriad challenges that AFC faces in marketing, grassroots football, women’s football, transparency and accountability and the list goes on,” he added. Prince Ali, who is also head of the Jordanian FA, said that the AFC rejected the proposal last year, yet it had now resurfaced. “The very Congress that elected the current AFC President has made its decision on the matter at our annual Congress a year ago. “I am truly surprised that this proposal has resurfaced in the past few months, led vigorously by the current AFC President. “It is regrettable that the AFC presidency has spent so much time and energy over the past few days in Kuala Lumpur lobbying heavily for this proposal amongst Asian member association representatives, instead of working hand in hand for the development of football in Asia.” Sheikh Salman was elected as AFC President last May when he secured 33 of the 46 presidential votes available from AFC member associations in a lop-sided election. The Bahraini replaced disgraced Qatari Mohamed Bin Hammam, who was banned for life by FIFA in 2011 amid allegations of trying to buy votes during the lobbying process in that year's presidential election.

Zahid ‘Magic Man’ Hussain officially started the next chapter of his career as his journey as a professional boxer has well and truly begun. His disappointing ABA final defeat was due to a damaged hand, despite being odds on favourite to win the championship. This was a major blow and the nail in the coffin ultimately bringing to an end his successful amateur career. His team, Bauer Events, and his brother, Wahid ‘Waga’ Hussain, former undefeated ABU European Light Heavyweight Champion, elected and decided that it was time for Zahid to move on and turn professional.
