Literature 15th-24th May LITERATURE: An array of authors will be in attendance throughout the ten day festival
After the overwhelming success of the September 2014 launch weekend, the Bradford Literature Festival is set to take the national festival scene by storm with its distinct, diverse and dynamic brand of programming. At the heart of this unique festival is cultural literacy – an exploration of race, faith and culture through a celebration of literature, history and the arts. This year, the Bradford Literature Festival runs from 15th to 24th May and with over 150 events, featuring more than 250 writers, thinkers, artists and experts from countries ranging from Nigeria to Syria, Poland to Pakistan and Ireland to Iran, there is so much to see. Exploring everything from ISIS to Islamophobia, Bollywood to the Brontes, comedy to crime, diabetes to doll making, football to feminism, horror to goth, Sufism to Judaism, and of course poetry to politics; the festival has something for everyone. As well as must-see events, the ten-day spectacle will be hosting some of the most notable names from the worlds of literature, poetry, journalism, science and faith. Amongst them will be renowned children’s author, Lauren Child, who will be celebrating the 10 year anniversary of her iconic book
and television series, ‘Charlie and Lola’. Bestselling author Sophie Hannah will also be talking about her very first Hercule Poirot mystery while Lauren Beukes discusses thrillers and horror. Perhaps you fancy something a bit more educational? The festival has a number of events for you with Will Self offering philosophical insights on particle physics alongside leading scientist Professor Akram Khan. Elsewhere, former Literary Editor of The Independent, Boyd Tonkin, will be discussing Freedom of Speech as well as chairing a number of events as part of a special Bronte themed weekend. In the world of current affairs, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown will give her take on the real meaning of ‘Englishness’, Baroness Warsi discusses issues of trust surrounding Muslims, Professor Paul Rogers examines ISIS and ‘No More Page Three’ campaigner, Lucy Ann Holmes, considers the impact of Female Tabloid Euphemisms. On top of all this, there will also be a range of events examining the relationship between India and Pakistan and the issues surrounding Kashmir. Interrogative questions will be explored such as: How do rising Islamophobia and anti-Semitism
reflect on British values? What is the lure of ISIS? Have we learnt any lessons from 7/7? Is there a crisis in masculinity today? What are the burning questions you’ve always wanted to ask about Islam but never dared? And do we really have freedom of speech, or is it a delusion of ‘liberal’ societies? From current affairs to the politics of gender, and global conflicts to their local effects, this groundbreaking festival offers a neutral space for constructive conversations about difficult topics which urgently need to be addressed. The festival also sees the return of its flagship poetry events, including last year’s sell-out Lyrical Mehfil, a Qawwali event featuring the Hussain brothers performing Allama Iqbal’s legendary Shikwa, Jawab-eShikwa whilst a special, intimate evening of Sufiyana Kalaam with Shabnam Khan will transport you to a bygone era. There will be a range of free events taking place for children in Bradford’s City Library as well as master classes including how to create your own to 2D animation. With all this and more on offer over ten days of literary excellence, make sure you head down to Bradford for a festival quite like no other.

FILM: The special screening of Cinderella was arranged for last week for Zara Lundy (back row, l-r) Sarah Ellis, Ellen Fox, Michelle Day, (middle l-r), Cinderella, Zara Lundy, Anna, (front, l-r) Jonny Lundy and Chelle Lundy
FRIENDS: Zara was ‘blown away’ by the day and enjoyed talking, singing and playing with the Princesses at the Odeon cinema
Making a Princess’s dream come true By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Cinema does more than Bollywood A young cancer patient from Leeds made two new friends for life last week as a special screening of Cinderella was held at the Odeon cinema, equipped with princesses and a touch of magic. Six-year-old Zara Lundy, from Middleton, suffers from acute lymphoblastic t-cell leukaemia and is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment which makes her prone to infections. As such, the young Westwood Primary school pupil has been told to avoid busy places yet when the new Cinderella film was released earlier this month, it became a ‘must-see’. Zara’s father, Jonny, explained: “As soon as Zara saw the first trailer for the film she immediately wanted to go so I started ringing around a few cinemas to see when the quietest showings were. “Unfortunately I was told to just turn up and see what it was like on the day. I didn’t want to take Zara all the way to the cinema to just disappoint her by turning around at the door, so we decided we couldn’t risk it.” After a number of phone calls,
Jonny then contacted the Leeds/Bradford Odeon where he was put in touch with contact centre agent, Michelle Day. Michelle, a breast cancer survivor, then contacted the cinema’s manager, Ellen Fox, and the wheels were set in motion to organise a secret private screening for Zara, with Cinderella and Frozen’s Anna in attendance. “We were just blown away with the response,” Jonny continued. “I can’t thank the Odeon staff enough for what they did for us. “We only found out about the princesses a few days before the screening and it was a huge surprise for Zara. She was blown away I think.” The two princesses greeted Zara at the cinema on Friday 24th April where she was sung to by Anna before walking up hand-in-hand with the pair to her red carpet reception. After chatting with her two new ‘besties’ Zara watched the film alongside the princesses. Jonny added: “She hasn’t stopped talking about the day and wants to invite the
princesses to a party. “Zara has had it really tough over the past three months. I think we had around nine or ten days out of hospital in the whole time since 19th January. “She’s had septicaemia and pneumonia so for something like this to be arranged is hard to describe. We were just so overwhelmed and emotional on the day.” The Lundy family praised the cinema staff who helped organise the day, describing their treatment as ‘customer service done right’. For Ellen Fox, it was a chance to help that she says she couldn’t overlook. “I initially got a call from Michelle explaining the situation and as soon as I heard about Zara I knew we had to do something,” she said. “After pulling some strings with Odeon we were able to arrange the private screening. “We were just trying to make this little effort which can help someone so much and we were delighted to have our princesses on hand as well.”

SUPPORT: Hundreds of protestors turned out over the two days to show their solidarity with the drivers
Bradford Bus Strikes Industrial action causes travel mayhem in city
Cover story continued In total, 380 drivers took part in the 48-hour protest as part of Unite – the country’s largest union, with many gathering at the First Bradford depot, on Bowling Back Lane, Bradford, where a large presence was seen across both days. Amongst the hundred-plus protestors in attendance were bus drivers Farzan Khan and Zulfakar Ali. The two employees have been in their roles for ten and eight years respectively, and said it was the first time either of them had been involved with industrial action, yet added that the union ‘had to stick together’. Unite accuses First of running the aforementioned bus depot down with the intention of closing it in the future, adding there were also allegations of bullying and harassment on a daily basis. The main issue in dispute is the transfer of part of the 576 bus service, from Bradford to Halifax, with the loss of eight jobs when it will be operated by the Halifax depot. There has also been an attack on terms and conditions, and the
imposition of rosters, without prior consultation and negotiations with the union. Representatives from the union described this as an ‘abrupt change’ to the previously good relationship between themselves and local management, with Unite regional officer, Harriet Eisner, adding they were left with no option but to strike. “This blinkered management has let services wither on the vine over the last four years – for example, the number of drivers employed has shrunk from 470 to 380 in that time,” she said. “While the strike will be inconvenient for thousands of bus users, the bigger picture that Unite is fighting for is the maintenance of good and reliable services with top quality buses, properly serviced. We also want our members treated with dignity and respect. “There is a big shortage of drivers with no recruitment of new drivers and this is coupled with the movement of jobs without consultation from Bradford to other towns. “This situation is compounded by inadequate engineering of the buses and the recycling of old buses. Many buses are unreliable – with all the health and safety
considerations that this state of affairs raises. “The management needs to wake up and take the union’s legitimate concerns seriously. “The company has been dragging its feet in talks with Unite and we have been left with no option, but to call this strike, so the citizens of Bradford get the service they deserve and pay for.” The drivers had voted by 89 per cent for strike action and by 93 per cent for industrial action short of a strike. In a statement on the First group’s website, the company called the situation ‘disappointing’. “The dispute is centred around the reallocation of some staffing duties on the 576 route,” it read. “Some 576 buses are now run by drivers from our Halifax depot, and this was done to balance the amount of work that we had and protect jobs in both areas following tender losses in Halifax. “Right now our priority is to continue talking with the trade union, but clearly we are very disappointed with the situation, and we are very concerned about the uncertainty and inconvenience that this announcement has caused our customers.”

Food revolution Iconic eatery continues to serve up first class service
“There are a number of competitors out there with the same name yet they do not come close to our level.” One of West Yorkshire’s fastest growing takeaways is continuing to expand its delicious reach across the world as it plans to open sites across the UK...and even in China. The iconic Rajas, with four icons, has been raising industry standards since it first opened its doors in Bradford, bringing new levels of service to fast food outlets. With interactive payment systems, high scoring hygiene ratings and an expansive food production unit, the company continues to go from strength-tostrength in every area. However, director, Rashid Bashir, says he wants the public to be aware that there are a number of businesses
with the same name, yet only at his ‘four icons Rajas’ can he guarantee exceptional service and quality. “Here at four icons Rajas, we pride ourselves on our customer service,” he said. “There are a number of competitors out there with the same name yet they do not come close to our level. “Whilst the name ‘Rajas’ may have appeared in the news previously for all the wrong reasons, you can rest assured that it was not one of our establishments. “You will not find this business fined for hygiene failings or anything like that. The last time the four icons Rajas was in the news was after signing our sponsorship deal with the
Bradford Bulls. “The community is very important to us and therefore our investment in our local team, is much like our investment in our stores – all with the purpose of benefitting the community.” Upon entering a four icons Rajas establishment is clear to see that investment has been made to ensure the premises stand out from the crowd. Spacious dining areas in modern interiors glisten, whilst open kitchens allow the customers to see their meals prepared right in front of them. So, with more stores opening all the time, make sure you head to the right Rajas when ordering your next delicious dinner.

REPORT: Ishtiaq Ahmed and Sofia Buncy compiled the report into Muslim women in prison and were commissioned to do so by the Muslim Hands charity
A revolutionary report about the needs of Muslim women in British prisons has been completed by a local Huddersfield charity as the lives of the ‘forgotten members of community’ are analysed before, during and after sentencing. The Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance (HPCA) was commissioned to undertake the testing project by international charity, ‘Muslim Hands’ and after interviews and case studies with direct and indirect stakeholders, the report was published. Released officially at an event in Briar Court Huddersfield, on Wednesday 22nd April, writers of the report, Sofia Buncy and Ishtiaq Ahmed, were joined by a host of speakers in front of more than 100 guests. The pilot was undertaken initially with the cooperation of HMP and YOI Newhall, women only facility, but later the remit of the project was extended to include HMP and YOI Askham Grange Prisons. Aimed at allowing a better understanding of the situation for Muslim women prisoners, Diane Pellew, Governor of the two aforementioned prisons, says it has been a ‘pioneering’ project. “The connections that have been made with Muslim women in custody and the wider community through this project have been excellent,” she said. “This can only serve to strengthen the support in custody and resettlement work on release that ourselves and our partners undertake with Muslim women across these two female prisons. “I would like to thank both Muslim Hands and the Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance for the insight to make contact and take this valuable work forward. “It will inform our current and future thinking and will be of interest to other female establishments across the estate.”
Report released into the needs of Muslim women in British prisons
It is not only in the prison system that the women are reported to feel ‘shunned’ but also upon their release with the report stating a severe ‘lack of empathy’ from the Muslim community. It is therefore recommended that an integrated programme of training for all stakeholders is provided to ensure each past offender is offered the same chance of rehabilitation and acceptance back into the community. Authors, Ms Buncy and Mr Ahmed, added that the difference in treatment towards women and men offenders in their communities is also one of worry and something that must be addressed. “We hope this report will be read and absorbed by the Muslim community so they
can begin to address some of the challenges and hardships which Muslim women are experiencing,” they wrote in their foreword. “We need to recognise that our approach and treatment of Muslim male prisoners and their rehabilitation is fundamentally different in comparison. “Therefore, the ‘silent suffering’ of Muslim women in and post custody needs to be remedied. “At the same time we hope the report will be a valuable source of information for different providers. “We aim to enhance understanding of the issues and barriers facing Muslim women in custody so that providers will be more informed to take into consideration the needs of this specific group.” PIONEERING: The authors said they hoped to enhance understanding of the issues and barriers facing Muslim women in custody

April 2015 - 4th Edition ADVICE: Milind Pande, a consultant eye surgeon in East Yorkshire reminds us of taking care and wearing eye protection whilst playing sport
Play Safe Leading eye surgeon warns against sports related eye injuries Sports-related eye injuries lead to blindness for many people each year and sport is now one of the biggest causes of hospital admission for serious eye injury in the UK. As millions take to the playing field this season, one of the UK's leading eye surgeons warns the public that thousands of people are blinded by sports-related eye injuries or have to live with longterm consequences due to injuries which are completely preventable. Milind Pande, a consultant eye surgeon in East Yorkshire reminds coaches, parents and athletes of the importance of taking excellent care and wearing eye protection where appropriate for any kind of sport on or off the playing field. Commenting Mr Pande said: “Obviously racket sports are particularly hazardous. The
Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) estimates that squash alone is responsible for over 4,000 hospital admissions in the UK each year. “Injuries range from black eyes to punctured eyelids, most of which are associated with sports and recreational activities but these injuries are actually preventable especially if you wear protective eye wear. “Eye injuries resulting from athletic activities range from corneal abrasions (scratches on the surface of the eye), to the more serious, potentially blinding injuries, such as an orbital fracture (bones around the eye are broken) and detached retina (when the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye is pulled out of place).” Mr Pande advises having an eye test with the optician before taking part in any new sporting
activity and this can be a good opportunity to find out more about protective eyewear for your chosen sport if it is appropriate. Certain sports are best performed with the protection of special frames or goggles. Squash players should really wear goggles, which protect the temples and bridge of the nose as well as the eyes. Such frames need to be lightweight for comfort but strong enough to resist impact. People who wear glasses should also wear appropriate protective eyewear, as glasses are not sufficient protection since lenses may shatter when hit by something. If you play sport and you're unsure about how best to protect your vision, make sure you play safe and consult your local optometrist for professional advice.

Not so ‘Hard to swallow’ Innovative gel unleashes medicine’s full potential
NEW: The gel - ‘gellan gum’, already exists in many foodstuffs such as desserts
INNOVATIVE: Dr Mohammed Mahdi is one of the researchers behind the project which uses the gel as a way of getting the maximum potential out of medication
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A pioneering fluid gel, which delays the release of medicines so that they have maximum effect, has been developed right here in West Yorkshire. Scientists at the University of Huddersfield have spearheaded the project which improves the administering of medication to patients who have difficulty swallowing pills and capsules. Unlike purely liquid medicines, the gel delays the release of the drug, so that it releases in the intestines, rather than the stomach, where it is much more effective. The research project is a response to the increasing demand for ‘age appropriate’ drugs for paediatric and geriatric patients. Researchers have investigated the use of a fluid gel made from ‘gellan gum’ - a natural ingredient used mostly in foodstuffs, such as desserts, which has now been revealed to have immense pharmaceutical potential. The gel-based medication consists of microscopic gel particles which collectively are pourable and can be administered with a spoon. In the stomach the ‘fluid gel’ solidifies, so that the drug is not immediately released there – where it would have little effect or even
irritate the stomach – but in the intestine, over the course of several hours. The project that has led to this discovery is headed by Dr Alan Smith, whose lab at the University of specialises in Huddersfield pharmaceutical and biomedical biopolymers research. A member of the team is Iraqiborn PhD researcher Mohammed Mahdi, who is lead author of new articles that describe the potential of gellan gum. Mr Mahdi, from Babylon, is also the author – alongside Dr Smith and Professor Barbara Conway – of a new article that investigates the use of gellan gum in the development of new and more effective nasal sprays. Although the nose has exceptional potential as a route for drug delivery, the natural ways in which the nasal cavity protects itself presents pharmaceutical challenges. It had initially proved difficult to administer medication through the nose yet the scientists have now developed fluid gels with the gellan gum that can be used in standard nasal spray. Dr Mahdi is in the third year of his PhD research into gellan gum. After a first degree in pharmacy, obtained in Jordan, he relocated to the University of Huddersfield for a Master’s course.

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY Bereaved father carries out Umrah for teenage son who passed away A grieving father from Bradford returned from Saudi Arabia last week after completing a religious expedition on behalf of his son who tragically died in a car accident last year. On Friday 12th September 2014, 15-year-old Saliq Malik suffered serious injuries after the car he was travelling in was involved in an accident on Giplin Street, Barkerend. The teenager was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he later died of his injuries that same day. Now, his father, Amjad Malik, has returned from Mecca where he travelled to complete a special ‘Umrah’ on behalf of his son. “This whole experience has been amazing and it all came about after my sister had a dream where Saliq was wearing ihram (white robes) and was
stood on a mountain where our Prophet used to go,” he explained. “She felt so strongly about this that she told me I must go complete Umrah for Saliq and make her dream come true. She funded the trip and it was an incredible experience.” Amjad set off on the spiritual journey on 22nd March, returning home on 11th April after completing the Umrah twice - first for himself and then in memory of Saliq. Comparing the two experiences, he said ‘they were worlds apart’ with the expedition for his son, ‘containing no obstacles’ throughout. “My own Umrah was really hard,” Mr Malik said. “Everything took a long time and the crowds were really busy. “Two days later, I began Saliq’s Umrah and it was a
different experience completely. I felt as if I had my son’s energy and felt his presence with me throughout it. “One experience occurred as I was approaching the Kaaba, one of our most sacred sites. It is usually the busiest place and you are going to be nudged and pushed because of the amount of people. “When I approached it for Saliq, I felt as if the crowds opened up and let me walk straight up to it. I kissed it and completed prayers for Saliq and family and friends back home.” Mr Malik has visited the holy site before in 2010 and had hoped to one day complete the visit with Saliq. Upon returning home, he now plans to take his whole family on an Umrah together within the next couple of years to share his experience with them. As the British public prepares to makes its decision on who will lead the country forward in the future, a special event was staged in Leeds last week, to discuss issues at the other side of the world. Organised by the Labour Friends of Kashmir, over 400 people turned out to discuss the profile of Kashmir and the concerns of suffering in the South Asian region.
Speakers were joined by chief guest, the former leader of the region, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, who spoke of the need of a democratic referendum ‘back home’. Barrister Chaudhry organised the ‘Million March’ last year which saw thousands line the streets of London in hope of forcing a peaceful solution and settlement of the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan.
Since Pakistan was first founded the area of Kashmir has been split between India and Pakistan, resulting in three separate wars. Meanwhile, legislation which affects people locally was also discussed at length as well as national issues. Cllr Javaid Akhtar was one of the speakers on the night and explained further why the former Prime Minister had travelled to

West Yorkshire. “Barrister Chaudhry was here in the UK because of the elections and wanted to show his support to the Kashmiri community living in Leeds,” he said. “The Kashmiri community is effected as much as anyone else in the country by the results of the elections and therefore they must know what different parties are working towards.” He added: “The event was a big
success and to be able to inform a large audience of issues on a local, national and international basis, was really productive.” Natives from Kashmir, who now reside in Leeds, were amongst those in attendance at the event last week, alongside several councillors and community leaders. ‘Team Clean’
CLEAN: AMYA members tidy the green spaces in the city
TEAM: The group of volunteers gave up their own time on Sunday morning to clean Peel Park in Bradford
April 2015 - 4th Edition
Litter pickers out and about in Bradford Brooms, bin bags and litter pickers were at the ready in Bradford last weekend as a group of young Muslim volunteers headed to their local park for a community clean up initiative. Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) gathered at the city’s Peel Park on Sunday 26th April as part of their ongoing commitment to helping the local community. Spending the day clearing playing fields and public spaces, the volunteers were replicating previous community work of which AMYA members have been carrying out in their local areas. Youth leader for AMYA in Bradford, Qasim Amini, said it was a great initiative that would help the relationship between the local community’s interfaith residents grow stronger. “It is our duty as Muslims to look after our environment and the creation of God,” he said. “Our religion teaches us to care for our surroundings and
be loyal to our country. We hope our work today will benefit the users of this park and work towards fulfilling our duties as Muslims and as British Citizens.” Naveed Ashraf, local member of AMYA in Bradford, added: “I really enjoyed our cleaning expedition this morning. “Thankfully the weather was on our side, and it was great to give something back to the local community.” AMYA UK recently held their annual Mercy4Mankind 10KM charity challenge where members from Bradford joined hundreds more from around the country in London's Hyde Park to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for several UK and international charities. Volunteers were joined by former England Cricketer and Ashes winner, Matthew Hoggard, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Davey, and Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening.

Dads go back Annual event gets thumbs up from all More than 60 dads and granddads spent a morning back in the classroom last week to see what their children get up to at school. A total of 62 men took part in the ‘Dads in School’ morning event at St Matthew’s CE Primary School, on Mayo Avenue, Bradford, held on Wednesday 29th April. It is the fifth year in a row that the event has been staged and has only grown in popularity with all parties involved. Pupils and teachers at the school host the event to encourage dads and granddads to get more involved in the school and strengthen their community ties. At last week’s event, dads got involved in an array of lessons including school project work, woodwork as well as maths and English activities. For some, this was the first time they had been to their child’s school and many were full of praise for the way it went. Headteacher Bob Curran reiterated this feeling after the morning’s activities and praised the initiative’s proactive approach.

Some of the dads have never been into school before and said they really enjoyed the experience,” Mr Curran said. “They saw some of their child’s schoolwork and helped them with a project. The children were delighted to be able to show their dads what they are doing at school. “We asked some of the dads what they thought about the event. One said it had been a wonderful experience and he felt ecstatic. “Another said it would build a great bond between parents, teachers and children. Others said they had enjoyed it and were looking forward to another chance to come back to the school.”

Aspiring lawyer wows judges in Miss Leeds contest By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A Miss Leeds finalist says she hopes to show there is much more to beauty contests than looks this year after finishing in the top ten of the regional contest. 17-year-old Jazmine Javeed, from Leeds, was one of 27 finalists in this year’s Miss Leeds 2015 competition competing for the decorated tiara on Sunday 26th April. An aspiring lawyer, she says it is her aim to show there is much more to beauty competitions than just appearance, with contestants having to be ‘beautiful on the inside and out’. “People have this perception of beauty contests being all about looks and for women who care about nothing else but that,” she said. “This idea is completely wrong. The girls I have met through this contest have all been so lovely and smart, with many of them currently studying at university. “I want to do my part in
helping to show that to be successful in a contest like this, you have to beautiful on the inside and the out. No contestants are allowed to have had any surgery and it is all about letting your inner beauty shine as much as anything else.” Jazmine first heard about the competition whilst holidaying in Dubai with her parents, entering through a Facebook advert. Two weeks later she was contacted by the organisers to attend an interview and after being selected from around 100 shortlisted entrants, she progressed into the final. Competing against finalists who are all older that herself, Jazmine was the youngest contestant this year at 17-yearsold and one of the only Asian entrants. “I entered this competition to improve my own confidence and I have really grown as a person and matured over the recent weeks,” she said. “It is one of my main aims to get rid of any stereotypes surrounding Asian girls lacking confidence to enter contests such as these and we should be celebrating our diversity.
“My parents have been really supportive throughout the whole process and the community really got behind me in this competition.” Prior to the final, each contestant had to raise money for charity and Jazmine was involved in bake sales, raffles and even door-to-door collections as she fundraised for the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ charity. In the final itself, each contestant competed in several rounds including: talent, evening wear, fashion shoot and personality. It was the talent round in which Jazmine excelled most, clinching the top award in the category for her rap performance, coming as a big surprise to many in the audience. “Growing up my dad always liked rap music and from a young age I have always just sung little pieces,” she said. “I wrote a rap especially for the Miss Leeds contest and to be awarded Miss Talent for Leeds was great. The judges seemed to like my rapping talents.”

Your vote counts!
VOTE: The You Vote team have been out in Bradford spreading the message of voting and urging more Muslim voters to have their say in the upcoming elections
Just by driving through Bradford it is clear to see that election season is upon us with many streets and gardens submersed in red, blue, yellow and every other colour of propaganda. However, despite a clear show of support in the form of banners and signs, it is at the polling stations that the real support counts. You can have your house painted in support of your favourite political party yet if you do not show up on the day and mark the correct box, have you really had an impact on the outcome of the votes? One demographic that has been lacking in its turnout rate in recent years are British Muslims with only 47 per cent of eligible adults estimated to have voted in the last General Election in 2010. Compare that figure with 65 per cent amongst the general population and there is clearly a missing link. But why is it that, statistically speaking, less
than one in two people are making their vote count? One independent group of campaigners, known as You Vote, are on a mission to not only answer this question but to turn the trend around and get Muslims voting. The non-profit British Muslim grassroots initiative provides the public with information they need to make informed decisions at General Elections, remaining completely impartial. In Bradford, local campaign volunteer, Shamsuddin Ahmed, has been out and about urging more of the city’s Muslims to vote and explained why it was so important. “Here in the UK, we may sometimes complain about politics but the fact is that we have one of the best democracies in the world,” he said. “You have to get involved to have your say and that is a privilege more of us need to take advantage of. “For Muslims, it can be
seen as a religious obligation to get involved with voting to become a fully fledged part of the community.” This year is the first time the You Vote team have been in Bradford, campaigning in the streets and driving around in an eye-catching car. Shamsuddin added that the response so far had been mainly positive yet there was still more work to be done to achieve their goals. “I think some people are warming up to the idea of voting but we still need to do a lot more,” he said. “If we can raise just a bit of awareness amongst the Muslim population that would be great, and hopefully get more eligible voters to have their vote counted.” This year’s elections will take place on Thursday 7th May and you can find your local polling station by simply visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and entering in your postcode.

Zayn Malik and Shah Rukh Khan shine at glittering Asian Awards Zayn Malik’s first public appearance since his highly publicised split from One Direction came last week as the Bradford singer picked up the Outstanding Achievement in Music accolade at the annual Asian Awards. Joined on the red carpet by the likes of Bollywood Superstar, Shah Rukh Khan, renowned fashion designer, John Rocha, and cricket legend, Kumar Sangakkara, the Bradford singer was in good company as the spotlight shone on London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. Zayn’s accolade was the first-ever independent award he has achieved and also his first since leaving the world’s biggest boyband. Accepting his award from Naughty Boy, he said: “I'd like to thank my mum and dad, and I'd also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys I've ever met everything I've done with them will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
The night was hosted by fashion icon Gok Wan with those in attendance treated to an exclusive performance from the cast of Gurinder Chadha’s upcoming West End extravaganza, Bend It Like Beckham – The Musical. The event itself dazzled with an array of A-list celebrities, dignitaries and influencers, walking away with a range of awards. Shah Rukh Khan, who was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema award by Gurinder Chadha, said he was proud to be a part of the ‘wonderful celebration’. “I am extremely humbled and honoured to receive this award,” he said. “I say this very often that my stardom belongs to most South East Asians who reside abroad who have made the Indian cinema and me known around the world. “I congratulate all the winners at the Asian Awards as well. QED-UK calls for election clarity over minority needs A leading Bradford based national charity is asking politicians to remember the needs of ethnic minorities in the run-up to the general election. Over the past 25 years, the QED Foundation has been working with policy makers to improve the social and economic position of disadvantaged communities. Now, the charity has written to the leaders of eight political parties asking how they will work to give ethnic minorities more opportunities and a better standard of living. “We are particularly concerned about the barriers to progress of
the UK's 1.2million people of Pakistani origin,” says QED founder and chief executive Dr Mohammed Ali OBE. “We are calling on politicians to say how they will help these communities, where lives are often blighted by bad health, low educational attainment, poor employment prospects and substandard housing in neighbourhoods with high crime levels.” QED found that the policies of the Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, UK Independence, Green, Scottish Nationalist, Plaid Cymru and Respect parties all contained some measures to
promote greater equality. However, it is concerned that manifestos and campaign literature did not explain how politicians intended to tackle the complex web of obstacles limiting the opportunities and life chances of the UK's British Pakistanis population. The country's second largest ethnic minority makes up a sizeable proportion of the electorate - over four per cent of the population of Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands according to the 2011 census, with London not far behind at almost 2.75 per cent. Dr Aneesha Advice Column Every few weeks we are asking readers to pose common questions or concerns regarding cosmetic treatments to our specialist Dr Aneesha, Medical Director at Skyn doctor. Today's question is: What is microdermabrasion? How does it work and will it help improve my skin texture? Microdermabrasion can be used to help rejuvenate the skin and leave it looking younger and healthier. It works using a dual mechanism of action comprising exfoliation and a vacuum.
At Skyn Doctor we use the award winning Pristine Diamond Peel Microdermabrasion System. The skin is first cleaned by ensuring all makeup products and impurities are removed. The diamond tipped wand is then passed over the skin. The system exfoliates dead skin
cells from the surface, cleaning the pores from inside out whilst the vacuum raises and holds the skin against the diamond tip and stimulates blood circulation, thus promoting skin regeneration. Microdremabrasion is a fantastic treatment modality for skin rejuvenation. It can also be used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture and acne. Clients often see results immediately after treatment, with a glowing skin complexion. In addition, after treatment, you will find skincare products are more effective as deeper skin penetration is achieved. We recommend a weekly treatment over a course of 6 weeks for optimum results. For a free skin consultation, contact the Skyn Doctor Team now. Our doctors will carry out an indepth skin analysis and will design a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs, helping you to achieve the desired results.

Bradford pupil clinches national award An aspiring writer is preparing to see her name published in a poetry book later this year after winning a national competition at just nine-years-old. Laiba Khan, from Killinghall, will be featured in the regional anthology from ‘Young Writers’ after triumphing in the ‘Out of this World’ project. Open to all primary school pupils aged between seven and 11, every entrant was given the creative freedom of writing about any subject they wanted to, writing and submitting the pieces at school. young Killinghall The Primary School pupil chose to write her poem ‘Winter is Mine!’ about the winter season and after waiting to hear back from the judges, she finally got the nod of approval last month. Head teacher at the school, Gill Edge, said she was ‘delighted’ for Laiba and hoped her success in the competition would help showcase the talented pupils in Killinghall. “I’m really pleased for Laiba to be recognised in this competition and she really deserves it,” she said. “I always hope all our children here enjoy their education and projects such as this really helps to showcase their abilities. “We always aim to encourage our children to celebrate their achievements so for Laiba to
see her poem published in a book is fantastic.” Laiba received her ‘Young Writers’ certificate during a school assembly after hearing of her success in the competition through a letter which was sent home. At such a young age, she says she is yet to have a favourite author but explained what it was about writing that she most enjoyed. “I like that you can put your own imagination into a poem,” she said. “My teacher helped me start the piece and then the rest I did all on my own. “It took about half an hour to 45 minutes to finish before it was sent off. When I was told I had won, I was very happy.” Laiba’s father, Aurangzeb Khan, added that he didn’t know his daughter was ‘so talented’ and now wants to see her continue to progress in the field that she enjoys. “As a parent, I am very excited and happy to see my daughter achieve something so great at such a young age,” he said. “I wasn’t aware that Laiba was so good at writing and the vocabulary she used in this poem is just so impressive it shows she is extremely talented. “Hopefully this award will just be the first step on the ladder for Laiba and she will go on to achieve more in the field as she grows older.”

DNA swabbing in hunt for Beeston attacker
WANTED: CCTV footage of the attacker has been circulated on big screens across Leeds as the search continues
Detectives investigating the attempted murder and rape of a woman in Leeds are conducting a large-scale DNA swabbing operation as part of their hunt for the attacker. The victim, an 18-year-old woman, was attacked by the man as she waited at a bus stop in Beeston Road, near to the junction with Tempest Road, at about 10.40pm on Friday 6th March. She was dragged from the bus stop into a nearby garden and struck over the head numerous times with a large stone before being raped. She received serious head injuries and a fractured pelvis. Detectives from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team launched a phased DNA screening exercise in the days following the attack based on advice from national experts in offender profiling. The operation has seen officers visiting addresses to request a swab from anyone who broadly fits the description of the offender. This work has been running in phases which have targeted zones moving increasingly outwards from the scene of the attack. So far officers have visited 1,100 addresses, spoken to 3,000 people and taken swabs from more than 250 men
aged between 18 and 30. The process is non-intrusive and simply involves a swab similar to a cotton bud being rubbed on the inside of the person’s cheek to gather cells from which a DNA profile can be obtained. Those samples are then being compared to the offender’s DNA profile that was recovered from the scene of the attack. Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, who is leading the investigation, said: “The offender’s movements on the night of the attack and the work we have been doing with experts in crime profiling still strongly suggest the attacker has a link to the Beeston area. “This mass swabbing operation is just one aspect of the investigation but it is vitally important for us to be able eliminate as many potential suspects as possible. “We are working in targeted phases at the moment and will continue to use this tactic more widely as the investigation continues. “The vast majority of people we have approached have been happy to assist us and I think this in part due to the very strong feeling there is out there that this man must be caught and taken off the streets as soon as possible.
“The fact that we have a full DNA profile for the offender means that nobody has anything to fear about being wrongly implicated or telling us about anyone they have suspicions about.” As part of ongoing efforts to keep the appeal for information at the forefront of people’s minds, mobile video display vehicles have been touring key sites in Leeds since last weekend.

Tour de Yorkshire is here! Countdown reaches zero as inaugural race arrives By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
RACE: The Tour De Yorkshire begins in Bridlington on Friday before competitors finish in Roundhay Park, Leeds, on Sunday
After months of anticipation, the first ever Tour de Yorkshire finally arrives this weekend and organisers are encouraging spectators to finalise their plans ahead of the historic race. People are being advised to plan where they will watch the race and allow extra journey time with sprints and climbs looking set to be extremely popular for spectators. The official website www.letouryorkshire.com has an interactive, ‘zoomable’ map for all three stages so people can see exactly where the action’s happening, plus other useful information including timings and road closures. To minimise disruption, most closures will be rolling road closures, lasting approximately one hour, with roads closing on average around 30 minutes before the peloton arrives. There will be full road closures around the start and finish lines and some key locations with all information available via the website.
If travelling by rail, spectators are advised to arrive early as some stations may have queuing systems in place at busy periods. Please also allow extra time if you’re heading to an airport on race days, especially Leeds Bradford International Airport on 3rd May for afternoon and evening flights. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “These three days spanning 1st May to 3rd are set to go down in history. It’s the first ever Tour de Yorkshire and the first time Sir Bradley Wiggins will have ridden for his own team. “The eyes of the world will once more be on Yorkshire and we want everyone to have a fabulous, memorable time. So that means planning ahead, allowing plenty of time and making some memories.” Several spectator hubs across the three stages will be set up across the route including in Pickering, Danby, Whitby, Norton, Wakefield and Ilkley whilst Roundhay Park is holding a range of special events for the family too.

Taking Liberties T
he High Court has struck out the recent libel case of Liberty Fashion Wears Ltd –v- Primark Stores Ltd & others as an abuse of process. The Claimant sought damages in respect of the Defendant’s press release which raised concerns over the Bangladeshibased Claimant’s building safety record. Defamation claims can be difficult to prove as the law provides that a statement can only be found defamatory if its publication has caused or is likely to cause serious harm to the reputation of a Claimant. For a Claimant that trades, “serious harm” equates to proving serious financial loss. The case was brought before the Courts as a libel matter (the written form of defamation) however the matter has its roots in the Rana Plaza factory disaster in which over 1000 people were killed in April 2013 in Bangladesh. The factory was operational and used for the production of garments bought by various retailers in the UK. Following on from this disaster various retailers sought to improve safety standards for garment workers in Bangladesh, and Primark and a number of other UK retailers formed the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh ('the Accord'). On inspection, one of the Claimant’s buildings was found to be structurally unsafe and an immediate evacuation was requested. The Claimant refused the request. Over a number of months the Accord attempted to negotiate with the Claimant in respect of making alterations to the building and offered both financial and technical assistance
in order to make the necessary repairs. However the Claimant would not engage with any meaningful negotiations and the necessary repairs to the building were not made. Reluctantly the Defendant ceased trading with the Claimant. The Defendant issued a press release outlining its position in June 2013 and, together with other retailers, later published a similar statement on a website in October 2013. The Claimant claimed that both were defamatory. The Judge held that the Claimant’s case for libel was an abuse of process and on that basis ought to be struck out. A significant issue was the fact that the Claimant had only complained about these statements over a year since their publication. He stated that a Claimant who was genuinely concerned would have moved more swiftly to vindicate their name. Further, the Claimant’s claim was limited to publication within the jurisdiction and there was no suggestion in their claim that they had any reputation, substantial or otherwise, within the jurisdiction. Alongside this, the Judge found that the statements had not been widely viewed therefore any reputation that did exist within the jurisdiction would not have been greatly affected by such small numbers having viewed the statement. The Judge also found that the likely time and cost of litigating the claim were hugely disproportionate to the likely amount of damages which the Claimant would, if successful, be awarded. We at Blacks Solicitors have a specialist team dealing with all aspects of defamation claims.

The new Zouk experience Terrace investment brings outdoor dining all year round
A once windy street corner on Chester Street has been transformed into a stylish and tranquil haven as Zouk Manchester brings you the perfect spot to enjoy al fresco dining come rain or shine. Working with designers at Ferrious, Zouk has transformed the previous site into a state of the art terrace where you can relax, eat, drink or enjoy a sheesha. With an investment of approximately £200,000 the terrace has been a significant project for the company and one owner Mudassar Amjad, says is very important for the business. “When we first began offering outdoor dining I think it was fair to say that it was a bit of an add on to the restaurant,” he said. “We created a standard decking space with tables, chairs and parasols but we were never happy with it. “We felt the area we had created did not live up to the rest of the restaurant.” Understanding what customers ‘want’ has been at the heart of the new terrace design, as Mudassar added: “Our customers expect to come to Zouk and eat in style and that should go for both indoors and out. “The new terrace is fantastic as it shows that we have listened to our customers to ensure that when they choose to dine at Zouk we offer them the best outdoor dining space in Manchester.” Commenting on the new terrace his brother and co-owner Tayub Amjad added: “Everybody loves to eat outdoors but we Brits do not get chance as often as we might like. “When we decided to reinvent the terrace we enlisted expert
help and considered carefully what we needed to make it work all year round. “We had to make it practical and combat the challenges of the unpredictable British weather but still ensure the space was flexible, luxurious and suitable for other popular outdoor activities like enjoying a sheesha.” The stylish new Zouk terrace is covered by a sophisticated retractable roof canopy system that can be individually controlled across the three terrace sections offering lots of flexibility for the service staff and customers. The roof, in combination with a new glazing system that sits on top of planting troughs, now provides a fully sheltered space that offers outdoor luxury all year round. Ferrious Designer, Rob Perry, worked closely with brothers Tayub and Mudassar on the project. He explains the design specification saying: “We had to create an aesthetic and layout that encompassed the quality of the existing interior. “Tayub and Mudassar had lots of ideas from spaces they had seen during travels in Europe, America and the Middle East but one thing was clear they wanted the space to transport you somewhere else and almost have a holiday feel to it. “Privacy from
passing traffic and distinction from the bustling street were also key considerations to the design. Essentially we had to deliver Tayub and Mudassar’s vision of a fully covered flexible space allowing high quality dining and lounge spaces to enjoy the range of services on offer.”
The final design of the terrace certainly underlines the Zouk ethos, opulence and understated luxury using the best quality exotic materials. This means that customers who visit Zouk can enjoy food, drink and sheesha outdoors every day of the year.
This recipe can be used on both the face and the body and is recommended 1-2 times a week. It is ideal for rough spots like feet, knees, elbows and hands. To use on the face, this scrub works wonderfully for those with acne-prone skin. But, of course, the entire body can benefit from a lemon and sugar exfoliation that leaves skin soft and insanely smooth. Indulge in this scrub from head to toe! Lemon & Sugar Face & Body Scrub Ingredients: 1 Tbsp Sugar 1 Tbsp Lemon juice Olive oil (just enough to form a paste) Honey (optional) Directions: Add lemon juice and olive oil in to a bowl and mix together. Add the honey and whisk or stir quickly until the ingredients bind together into a medium thick consistency. Add in the sugar and mix. If you sense that there is not enough sugar to get the scrubbing done, add a bit more. This is purely up to personal preference. Tips: You can add or subtract the amount of olive oil and honey that you use depending on how thick you want your scrub to be. How to Use: As a face scrub: Cleanse face prior to application (remove makeup etc). Apply to entire face with gentle circular motions. Leave on for about 10 minutes and rinse with cool water. Moisturize with your favorite moisturizer. This scrub is ideal for people who suffer from breakouts and acne as all of the ingredients are highly beneficial to acne prone skin. Lemon tightens pores and evens out the skin tone, sugar removes dead skin cells and cleans pores, olive oil heals acne scaring, and honey prevents future breakouts. *Be cautious of using on open wounds as the lemon may sting. As a body scrub: Apply to body, paying extra close attention to elbows, knees, feet and hands (nails and cuticles especially) and rub in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse. Enjoy the silky softness of your impossibly smooth skin.

British aid flown out to Nepal DAMAGE: More than 5,000 people have died following the earthquake whilst damage to the area is substantial
AID: The DFID flew out aid stocks earlier this week to help those left stranded, injured and affected by the huge earthquake
Millions effected after 8.1 magnitude earthquake As the official death toll of the earthquake in Nepal rises to almost 6,000, and the number of those in need of help reaches the millions, Britain has sent over more aid stocks to help suffering civilians. An RAF flight was deployed by the Department for International Development (DFID) earlier this week carrying more than 1,100 shelter kits, 1,700 solar lanterns, and a team of Gurkha engineers. A series of aftershocks, severe damage from the quake, creaking infrastructure and a lack of funds have complicated rescue efforts in the poor country of 28 million people sandwiched between India and China. Nepal's most deadly quake in 81 years, measuring 8.1 on the Richter Scale, also triggered a huge avalanche on Mount Everest that killed at least 18 climbers and guides, including four foreigners, the worst single disaster on the world's highest
peak. International Development Secretary Justine Greening said this latest plane-load of aid would help thousands of people and that the UK government will match the first £5 million of public donations to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Earthquake Appeal. Ms Greening said: “A swift and effective UK response to the Nepal earthquake means help is already reaching all those affected by this terrible disaster. But as the devastating scale of the crisis becomes clearer, we are stepping up our efforts. “In Nepal, vulnerable people are sleeping out in the open, their homes destroyed. An RAF C-17 loaded with humanitarian supplies, vital shelter kits, and Gurkha engineers is being deployed, to help thousands of people affected by the disaster. “Here in the UK, I know many people will have watched their television screens with horror, and want to help.
“By committing to match pound-for-pound public donations to the Disasters Emergency Committee Earthquake Appeal, we will make sure the public’s generosity has an even bigger impact on the ground, and help the fantastic charities on the ground do an even better job.” This is the latest step in the UK’s response to the earthquake in Nepal, which includes a £5 million package of UK support, the deployment of eight disaster response specialists and a team of rescue responders. Although the official death toll remains around the 6,000 mark, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala says that number could rise as information from remote villages comes in. If you would like to donate to the DEC Earthquake Appeal, you can do so by visiting www.dec.org.uk or text DEC to 70 000, to donate £5.

World’s biggest bird egg heading to auction
Believed to be more than 400 years old and nearly 200 times the size of a chicken egg, an extremely rare elephant bird egg will be auctioned in London this week, with an estimated price tag of up to £50,000. The egg, over 30 centimetres high, was laid by the now extinct elephant bird, a giant flightless bird indigenous to Madagascar, according to auction house Sotheby's. The bird is believed to be the largest ever on earth at about three
metres high and half a ton in weight, and became extinct between the 13th and 17th centuries due to hunting. “It's the largest egg from the largest bird that ever existed,” David Goldthorpe, senior director of Sotheby's books and manuscripts department, told Reuters. “It is related to the cassowary and the ostrich which are still with us today.” Sotheby's will offer the egg at an auction on Thursday and it is estimated to fetch between £30,000 and £50,000.
Zayn could still be in 1D
What is the cosmological effect of singer Zayn Malik leaving the bestselling boy band One Direction and consequently disappointing millions of teenage girls around the world? The advice of British cosmologist Stephen Hawking to heartbroken fans is to follow theoretical physics, because Malik may well still be a member of the pop group in another universe. The physicist took a break from speaking about his work as one of the world's leading scientists to answer the question from one upset fan during a talk at Sydney Opera
Parents ‘pull’ children from mosque visit The Lord Mayor of Exeter has warned parents who took their children out of a scheduled trip to a mosque in the city, that they are keeping them away from a ‘golden opportunity’. A handful of children from Lostwithiel School, in Cornwall, have been withdrawn from the scheduled visit which was to be made in accordance with their Religious Education (RE) lesson. According to Cornwall Council, there had been some worries from parents about terrorist groups such as IS and their affiliation with Islam. Kat Smith, the chairman of governors, said the school was taking a proactive approach to speaking with parents who have voiced their concerns.
“Because of recent news reports about extremist groups, such as ISIS, that identify themselves with Islam, a small number of parents have expressed concerns about the trip and the teaching of Islam in school,” she said. “In response, the school held a special assembly with children to discuss these issues, and the head teacher has met and sent letters to parents with specific concerns.” Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Percy Prowse, added that it would be the children who were the ones missing out after the ‘far from the truth’ statements. “To make such an assertion, particularly regarding the Exeter Mosque, is about as far
from the truth as you can get,” he said. “It is a wonderful place. It is full of children and toddlers playing, education classes and people going in to pray as they would in any church. “Police statistics also show that Exeter is one of the safest cities in the UK . “By keeping their children away they are missing a golden opportunity to see this wonderful city.” Lostwithiel School follows the Cornwall Agreed Syllabus for RE and as such teaches about Christianity in the greatest detail, whilst other religions, such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism, are taught through trips and class teaching.

House at the weekend. “Finally a question about something important,” Hawking, who appeared via hologram, said to loud laughs from the audience. “My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay attention to the study of theoretical physics because, one day, there may well be proof of multiple universes. “It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another, different universe and, in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.”

‘First Class’ ticket to jail
HACKED: The biochemistry student hacked four computers on campus in total
Uni student behind bars for hacking grading systems By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A student has been jailed for four months after he used key-logging devices to hack into an exams grading system at the University of Birmingham and improved his grades. Imran Uddin used four of the devices on university computers to capture login details from members of staff - including one who had access to the system that kept records of his grades. The 25-year-old then logged into the system using the details he had obtained and upped his marks from being on course for a 2.2 result to what would have been a first class degree. However, the biochemistry student was found out when staff located one of the small, black, rectangular devices inside a computer. Staff launched an internal investigation and found three more including one attached to a machine in a secure area of the campus only accessible to staff. Police were called and detectives from the Regional Cyber Crime Unit were able to decipher the data he had collected and found Uddin had been logging in using staff details to better his grades. Appearing at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday Uddin, of Chesterton Road in Balsall
GUILTY: Imran Uddin was on track to achieve a 2:2 grade yet after hacking the university’s computer systems, changed his projected grading to a First Class degree
Heath, pleaded guilty to six offences under Sections 1, 2 and 3 of the Computer Misuse Act. Detective Constable Mark Bird, from the Regional Cyber Crime Unit, said: “The audacity of Uddin to install not just one but four of these devices showed how determined he was to cheat his way to a better degree. His false qualification could have seen him go on to research
medical treatments. “The seriousness of his crimes were reflected in the four-month prison sentence he was handed at court yesterday (23rd April).” The Regional Cyber Crime Unit is part of the West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit which is committed to tackling organised crime across the region.

Mayor ousted after ‘Corrupt Practice’ The election of a London mayor will be re-run after the previous polling was declared void by a judge with allegations of corruption and illegal practices found to be true in the voting process. Lutfur Rahman, the first Mayor of Tower Hamlets in the 2010 elections, regained his seat in May 2014 as a representative of the independent party - Tower Hamlets First. However, that result has now been voided by an Election Court judge who found Rahman guilty of playing ‘race’ and ‘religious’ cards in his election drive. Election Commissioner Richard Mawrey, also ordered Rahman to pay
£250,000 in costs on the same charges with a re-election set to be staged in the upcoming months, which the former mayor cannot stand in. “[Mr Rahman ran a] ruthless and dishonest campaign to convince electorate his rival John Biggs was a racist,” Mr Mawrey said. Mr Biggs himself commented after the ruling that it was ‘a victory for honest politics’. “By setting out to break the rules and going to extraordinary lengths to win last May's mayoral election, Lutfur Rahman and his allies robbed the people of Tower Hamlets of the free and fair mayoral election they deserved and betrayed everyone in our
community who trusted and voted for him,” the Labour politician said. Rahman insisted that there was ‘little evidence’ of any wrongdoing and his lawyers also voiced their disbelief at the verdict branding the claims an ‘invention’, ‘exaggeration’ and ‘in some cases downright deliberately false allegations’. In a statement, Tower Hamlets First added: “Today's judgment has come as a shock - the Mayor strongly denies any wrongdoing and had full confidence in the justice system, and so this result has been surprising to say the least.”
Election season extends in Tower Hamlets
GUILTY: The now former mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, will not be allowed to run in the re-election

Malala attackers JAILED Ten sentenced after first convictions since 2012
JUSTICE: Malala has been an advocate for women’s rights to education since she was shot in the head by Taliban militants in 2012
Ten men were jailed for 25 years each earlier this week for their involvement in the highly-publicised shooting of teenage activist Malala Yousafzai in 2012. The now 17-year-old was targeted by Taliban militants as she spoke out about the rights to education for girls in Pakistan. She was shot in the back of the head as she travelled home from her school in the northwest capital of Islamabad. Last week on Thursday 30th April, the group of men were convicted for their roles in the shooting at an antiterrorism court. They are the first people to be convicted for the attack. “Judge Mohammad Amin Kundi in his verdict gave 25 years jail to all of these people,” said a court official in Swat. Following the attack, Malala was seriously wounded and airlifted to Britain for treatment, where she now lives. Two other schoolgirls were also wounded. Since then, the teenager has become a symbol of defiance
in the fight against militants operating in ethnic Pashtun areas in northwest Pakistan and was rewarded for her work most notably with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. A security official said none of the four or five men who carried out the attack on Malala were among the 10 men sentenced on Thursday. “But certainly they had a role in the planning and execution of the assassination attempt on Malala,” said a police official in Swat who declined to be identified as he was not authorised to speak to the media. Police believe the gunman who shot Malala escaped across the border into Afghanistan, whilst several others, including Pakistani Taliban leader Fazlullah, are still wanted in connection with the attack. Fazlullah, a fiery preacher from Swat, is also believed to be hiding out in eastern Afghanistan. Malala is unable to return to her homeland because of Taliban threats to kill her and her family members.

Carpet at Jerusalem shrine causes religious rift
REFURBISHMENT: On Sunday 19th April workers removed carpets over ancient floor designs in the cave under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which has caused tensions
Muslim authorities replacing an old carpet worn thin by masses of worshippers at the Dome of the Rock, the iconic, gold-topped shrine that overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem has ignited religious tension. The lifting the carpet, as a routine remodeling project, has sparked a verbal holy war over the hilltop compound, which is revered by Jews and Muslims whose competing claims often spill over into violence. Israeli archaeological authorities say the repairs were carried out behind their backs, and an Israeli government minister urged an immediate halt to the work, claiming it might cause irreparable damage. Frustrated Israeli researchers say previously undocumented ancient floor designs were discovered when the old carpets were peeled off, but they didn't get a chance to document the designs before workmen covered them up with the new carpet. And some researchers claim the Bible's deepest secrets may lie beneath some of the newly exposed floor designs. "Something is there. I don't know what. But something is hidden there," said Israeli archaeologist Zachi Dvira, who studies the site. Officials with the Waqf, the Muslim authority that administers the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, which includes the Dome of the Rock, reject the Israeli accusations. Sheikh Azzam Tamimi, the head of the Waqf, said the work is long overdue and has defiantly proclaimed that he was forbidding any Israeli involvement. "Our work in Al Aqsa is transparent," he said. "We are only putting down carpet and felt. Nothing more, nothing less." The work quietly began more than a month ago, and Israel facilitated the renovation project, said Jamal Al Quda, a member of a group of Jordanian carpet layers who received Israeli visas for the job. A packing list dated 11th March from an Egyptian carpet company to the Jordanian Embassy in Tel Aviv lists 80 bales of carpeting for the Marwani prayer area located at the compound, and the prayer area encircling the rock slab inside the dome. Jordan's King Abdullah II financed the project, according to Waqf. Israel captured Jerusalem's Old City from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war, but under a longstanding agreement, Jordan remains the custodian of the area's Muslim holy sites. On a recent afternoon in a small cave underneath the
shrine's rock, Al Quda dribbled Israeli all-purpose glue from a large tin onto an intricate stone tile decoration on the cave's marble floor. He said it was necessary to affix the base layer of thin dark felt before rolling out the carpet above it. Some Israeli archaeologists are alarmed about the glue used but Al Quda said the glue wouldn't damage the floor. "It comes off my hand," he said, rubbing his fingers. The cryptic geometric designs have sparked the imagination of some researchers about what secrets may lay beneath. Ancient Jewish traditions say the gold-cased Ark of the Covenant, which contained the Ten Commandments, may have been hidden away in a chamber when the First Jewish Temple was destroyed some 2,500 years ago. It's an Indiana Jones-type mystery that touches upon a holy grail for biblical enthusiasts. While Jerusalem may be the most excavated city in the world, the Dome of the Rock and its hilltop plaza are an archaeological gold mine that has never been properly dug because of the political sensitivities surrounding the site, which is considered Judaism's holiest spot and Islam's third holiest. The Dome of the Rock enshrines the large rock slab where Muslim tradition says the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) ascended to heaven. Jews believe the rock may be where the holiest part of the two ancient Temples stood as early as about 3,000 years ago - and where religious Jews pray a third Temple will one day be built. The adjacent Western Wall, believed to be one of the last remnants of the Temple complex, is the holiest site where Jews can pray. Palestinian officials reject Jewish historical ties to the site. The competing claims have spilled over into violence. In 1999, the Muslim authorities who administer the site dug an enormous hole 12 meters (40 feet) deep as part of construction for an underground prayer area, dumping 10,000 tons of earth in a nearby valley and an east Jerusalem dump. The director of the Israeli Antiquities Authority at the time called it an "archaeological crime." For years, Dvira and veteran Israeli archaeologist Gabriel Barkay have been leading a team of archaeologists and volunteers in combing through the dirt for historical finds. The initiative, called the Temple Mount Sifting Project, is conducted under the auspices of the Elad Foundation, a group that also purchases Arab homes in
contested parts of East Jerusalem and helps move Jews in. Critics say this nationalist agenda should not mix with archaeology. Israel's state comptroller wrote a scathing report in 2010 about the Muslim authorities' illicit work projects at the compound and Israel's failure at enforcing supervision there. Israeli officials kept the report classified out of concern that its publication could harm the sensitive relationship with Jordan. Tens of thousands of worshippers attend weekly Friday prayers, and the carpets have been replaced before — most recently 12 years ago, at a time of heightened violence when Israeli antiquities officials were granted limited access to the site. Past renovation projects were done quietly behind the scenes. Leaked photos posted on social media sites — combined with the political influence of Israeli nationalists monitoring the site — drew extra attention and fueled the latest controversy. Last week, Israel's housing minister, Uri Ariel of the nationalist Jewish Home party, sent an alarmed letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the carpeting project. "There is no need to elaborate on how important this site is, where every modification, every excavation with heavy equipment can cause irreparable harm to the foundations of the Temple," Ariel wrote. Photos that were leaked to Facebook from the off-limits restoration site showed a number of geometric floor patterns never before documented by archaeologists, said Frankie Snyder, a researcher with the Temple Mount Sifting Project. Some apparently date to when the Crusaders controlled the complex in the 12th century, she said. "I'm worried about damage of the original floors," said Barkay, the archaeologist. "The patterns were never properly documented." Israel Hasson, the director of the Israeli Antiquities Authority, said once the government body learned about the renovation, it made arrangements with the Waqf to send an archaeologist to document some of the floor patterns, but others already had been covered by the maroon and beige carpeting. "We got to part of them. We didn't get to it all. I won't ask anyone to pull up the carpets to document it," Hasson said. "We will wait for the next opportunity. We're sure to be here over the next 2,000 years."

MORSI sentenced to 20 years Former president turns prisoner after court ruling Egypt’s first democratically elected leader should be preparing to defend his seat in an election next year yet instead now finds himself spending the next 20 years behind bars. Mohamed Morsi was elected president of Egypt in June 2012. His reign in charge of the nation was short-lived however, as just over one year later he was overthrown by the army on allegations of terror offences whilst in office. Last week, he appeared in front of a high court with other members of his now banned Muslim Brotherhood Party, where he received a sentencing of 20 years without the chance of parole. Morsi stood in a cage in court
as judge Ahmed Sabry Youssef read out the ruling against him and 12 other party members, as the sentencing was broadcast live on state television. The men were convicted on charges of violence, kidnapping and torture stemming from the killing of protesters during demonstrations in 2012 yet were acquitted of murder charges, which carry the death sentence. His sentencing was not warmly received by many international bodies as Egypt’s democratic elections come into question. White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said the US was ‘concerned’ about the sentencing and said everyone has the right to a fair trial.
“All Egyptians regardless of political affiliation are entitled to equal and fair treatment before the law, including full respect to their rights to due process,” Earnest said. “Mr Morsi, like all other defendants must be afforded the basic legal right of due process. ‘We will never forget you’ Malala writes to kidnapped Nigerian girls
One year on from the abductions of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls by Islamist militants and Pakistani teenager, Malala Yousafzai, has released an open letter telling them ‘not to give up hope’. Addressing her ‘brave sisters, the kidnapped schoolgirls of Chibok’, she told the girls they will never be forgotten following the shocking incident by members of Boko Haram. “Please know this: we will never forget you. We will always stand
with you,” 17-year-old Yousafzai wrote in her letter. “We will not rest until you have been reunited with your families.” Yousafzai was shot in the head on a school bus in Pakistan by the Taliban in 2012 for refusing to quit school and won global acclaim for her passionate advocacy of women's right to education. Last year, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Indian children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. In her letter, Yousafzai called on
Nigerian authorities and the international community to ‘do more’ to free the schoolgirls abducted one year ago this month. Their abduction from a secondary school in Chibok in the country's Northeast last April drew international attention to the humanitarian crisis caused by attempts by the militants to establish a medieval-style caliphate in religiously mixed Nigeria. Celebrities, including U.S. singersongwriter Mary J. Blige and First
Lady Michelle Obama, joined in a global #BringBackOurGirls campaign last year to draw attention to the kidnapping as public outrage spread across the world. While some of the girls managed to escape the militants’ grip, the majority of them remain missing. Malala added: “Remember that one day your tragic ordeal will end, you will be reunited with your families and friends, and you will have the chance to finish the education you courageously

You are my heroes.” On the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the kidnapping last Tuesday, Nigeria's President-elect Muhammadu Buhari vowed to make every effort to rescue the girls, but conceded that it was not clear whether they would ever be found.

Cricket returns to Pakistan
International cricket will return to Pakistan next month with a short, limitedovers series against Zimbabwe, ending the Asian nation's agonising six-year wait to host a test team. Pakistan has been forced to play designated 'home' matches primarily in the United Arab Emirates since March 2009 following an attack by militants on a Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore. The Sri Lankans were ambushed while travelling from their hotel to the Gaddafi stadium for a test match, in an attack that left six Pakistani policemen and a van driver dead while some players and a local umpire sustained injuries.
“I am grateful to my counterpart in Cricket Zimbabwe, Wilson Manase, for acceding to our request of sending a full side on a tour to Pakistan,” PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan said in a statement. Pakistan will reciprocate by touring Zimbabwe in August, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said on their official Twitter feed. The local board hopes that, though short and featuring no tests, the success of the tour would encourage other test teams to change their perception about Pakistan and tour the country they consider unsafe.
Elections in Egypt will be this year
An Egyptian parliamentary election that was due in March will be held before the end of the year, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told the Spanish newspaper El Mundo in an interview published on Wednesday. The election was put on hold after the Supreme Constitutional Court ruled that part of the election law was unconstitutional. “We wanted to launch the [election] process in March but it was stalled by the constitutional appeals ... We're discussing it with all political parties. I give my word that they will be held
before the end of the year,” Sisi was quoted as saying. Egypt has been without a parliament since June 2012, when a court dissolved the democratically elected main chamber, reversing a major accomplishment of the 2011 uprising that autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Critics say Sisi, who as army chief overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 following mass protests against his rule, has undermined freedoms gained after the uprising that ended Mubarak's 30-year rule.

It’s a ‘Bad Ad’
Jewellers withdraw promos after claims of racism A controversial advert, branded ‘insidiously racist’ by campaigners, has been withdrawn by a major jewellers in India with a written apology made to anyone of whom it caused offence. Kaylan Jewellers, which employs 4,000 people across the South Asian nation, said its latest advertisement Bollywood actress, featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was intended to present ‘royalty, timeless beauty and elegance’. The image showed Bachchan sat on a sun lounger whilst a young child, of darker skin, holds a parasol above her head to protect her from the sun. In an open letter to the actress, who is also a goodwill ambassador for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS and a former Miss World, social activists said the image reflected 17th and 18th century paintings of noblewomen with child servants. “In the advertisement you appear to be representing aristocracy from a bygone era – bejewelled, poised and relaxing while an obviously underage slave-child, very dark and emaciated, struggles to hold an oversize umbrella
over your head,” said the letter. “While advertisers routinely use fantasy images to sell products, they must surely desist from using images that condone, legitimise, normalise, or build desirable fantasy around slavery or servitude of any kind, including child slavery or child servitude.” In response to the growing campaign against the ad, which was first featured in a national newspaper last week, the jewellers published a written apology on their Facebook page. It read: “If we have inadvertently hurt the sentiments of any individual or organisation, we deeply regret the same. We have started the process of withdrawing this creative from our campaign.” Amongst the activists who called for the advert to be dropped were: former chair of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Shantha Sinha; and CEO of Oxfam India, Nisha Agrawal. Both called for Rai Bachchan to disassociate herself from the advert and ensure its withdrawal.

Ali Fazal: The desi dude who made it into the ‘Fast And Furious’ franchise Apart from pushing the envelope with every role he takes up, Ali Fazal also experiments with his looks. Be it his bearded avatar in ‘3 Idiots’ or the clean-shaven look in ‘Fukrey’, the actor, more often than not, opts for a different look in his movies. He is currently sporting a new look for his new project. Riding high on the success wave of the seventh installment of the international franchise ‘Fast And Furious 7’, the actor talks about his Bollywood journey that has just begun. Talking about working with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel, Ali says: “It was fun. They didn't know about my accent in the film – so my shots sometimes required six-seven retakes as Vin and Paul wouldn't stop laughing. “Also, it was Paul's birthday on the first day of the shoot. “I had a long conversation with him about films and action. He asked me to keep it real. “He was a fine actor and martial arts expert. “Vin and I chatted about Bollywood and potential locations in India for the next part of the franchise if there is one. I personally feel that it's a great franchise and the legacy should continue.”
One would imagine that Ali’s perception in the industry has changed after ‘Fast And Furious 7’. He says that really perceptions of him actually began changing after he did ‘Khamoshiyan’ and that he is always being approached for unconventional projects. “It's the result of a lot of inputs from my end. I don't think I go by looks alone. Working on a particular look doesn't make you a serious actor. I am not into method acting. I interpret my character in a certain way and decide on it. I am very impulsive when it comes to experimenting with my looks and love playing with ideas by involving people from all walks of life,” he said. For those who have watched ‘Khamoshiyan’, they’ll be aware of Ali’s intimate scenes. He says: “When you see an Indian man's behind, that's too much. That will make you feel awkward. Women are naturally beautiful. “There were a lot of suggestive scenes and I wouldn’t do them ever, whatever the reason.” Ali’s next film is ‘Love Affair’ - a movie set in the '50s and is based on a true story.

www.asianexpress.co.uk After news of Mika Singh slapping a doctor at an event which he was booked to perform at in Delhi, the singer released an official statement about what happened. Mika says in a statement: "I had made a humble request whilst being on stage, as I always do that the ladies and children should be given space to dance and enjoy the show. I asked the gentleman in the audience several times politely to move over to the side slightly and most complied straight away. “However, there was a small group of men, who constantly ignored my requests. “The ladies meanwhile were consistently asking me to ask them to move slightly. “Again, I kept very calm and upon the ladies persistence I again requested the gentleman to give them some space. It was then that the particular doctor

Mika Singh clarifies slapping a doctor in mention starting swearing at me from the audience and showing his middle finger in front of all the doctors present. I realised at this point he was drunk which everyone witnessed. “I called him up on stage, and asked him whether he would feel just as comfortable doing the same actions on stage or in front of his family. He continued his tirade of swearing after which I lost my cool, which I probably shouldn't have, and slapped him. “Now what I want to ask is why is it that I am always perceived in a negative way even when I am doing things for the protection of our own women? “Would people have rather preferred if I hadn't taken a step to help others? Rishi Kapoor disapproving of
Katrina Kaif? While dad Rishi Kapoor has always been proud of Ranbir Kapoor's various achievements, he doesn't seem to be happy with his son's latest decision of being in relationship with Katrina Kaif. Though Rishi hasn't said anything obvious about Ranbir moving out with Katrina, he doesn't really seem to be approving of Katrina as his would be daughter-in-law. And this was quite evident when Rishi recently skipped the family dinner with Ranbir-Katrina, where the entire Kapoor family was present. While the real reason behind his dislike for Katrina is not known, we guess there are few reasons that are stopping Rishi from accepting Katrina. Most of the star couples have had unsuccessful marriages and that might be one of the reasons why Rishi is averse to Ranbir-Katrina's relationship. Or it might just be the fact that since Rishi shares a cordial relation with Salman Khan and the fact that Katrina dated Sallu in a complicated relationship, perhaps dads thinks Ranbir is better off without her. Who knows…
Though Nora Fatehi will be seen grooving in an item song in Telugu actioncomedy ‘Kick 2’, it is way different from Nargis Fakhri's sizzling number in Salman Khan starrer Hindi flick ‘Kick’. “It is nothing like that (Nargis Fakhri's item number) at all. “It is an extremely energetic and fast-paced dance number with a signature step that would make everyone dance to it

It's very hot and rustic. The shoot is already done,” says Nora. Though she didn't divulge much, Nora reveals that her item song is on the lines of ‘Munni Badnam' from ‘Dabangg’. Nora says, “Yes, it is almost like ‘Munni Badnam', but a couple of notches higher. This song is all about expressions and hard core dance moves. It should release in few weeks.” She adds,

‘Welcome To Karachi’ producer Vashu Bhagnani says his movie will be promoted in Pakistan, where they are trying for a commercial release as well. Asked if the political satire will be promoted in cities like Lahore and Karachi on the other side of the border, Bhagnani said: "We have been invited, and we are planning to go. In the next 45 days, we will plan." Asked if the film will be releasing in Pakistan, he said: "Hundred percent." Directed by Ashish R. I would like to tell you of an incident last year where I helped two men on the road who had suffered a hitand-run accident. The next day the news reported that I had hit them with my car and I was the target of the media. The question is why is help first perceived in the wrong way? I will never participate/appear in a show like ‘Bigg Boss’ Quite a few actresses have made their presence felt in Bollywood after a successful stint in the popular reality show, ‘Bigg Boss’, and therefore it came as a big surprise when Neha Dhupia flatly refused to join the show. When we caught up with her at a business conclave at the Taj city Agra, the beauty with brains, who has made a mark in both commercial and offbeat films. Says Neha: “Since cinema is a popular media and actors/actresses are household names, it is evident that many flock shows to boost their popularity here. One really has to work hard to stay at the top and perseverance pays - Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir are prime examples.” Reacting to a question about her return to the television Neha said, “I had earlier worked in a TV serial ‘Rajdhani’ and I will surely work in television if there is a good enough offer, but I will never participate/appear in a show like ‘Bigg Boss as it’s not my thing.”
“Master Johnny, who is known for the hit song ‘Cinema Choopistha Mama' featuring Shruti Haasan, has choreographed the song.” Moroccan-based model and actress Nora is very much fond of Bollywood songs and dance. “I am obsessed with Bollywood songs and dance and now Tollywood. It is almost second nature to me,” says Nora. She will be also seen in a special appearance song 'Alif Se' along with Emraan Hashmi and Gurmeet Choudhary in the film ‘Mr. X’ directed by Vikram Bhatt and produced by Mahesh Bhatt.

Akshay Kumar talks about ‘Gabbar is Back’ and what makes him tick The latest Bollywood blockbuster to hit cinema screens this year is ‘Gabbar is Back’, which follows the story of a corrupt city being tackled by an army of vigilantes, led of course by Akshay Kumar. After a freak incident causes Professor Gabbar Singh Rajput (Kumar) to lose everything he holds dear, he is dismayed to discover corruption at every level of society and a system that doesn't seem to care. Deciding to take matters in his own hands, he establishes a military network called the AntiCorruption Force (ACF) to target corrupt individuals from all walks of life. Taking time out of his schedule to discuss the film, the Khiladi star spoke with the Asian Express about what film fans can expect from his latest role. Q: Tell us something about the film. A: ‘Gabbar Is Back’ is directed by ‘Krish’ and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and is the Hindi remake of Tamil film ‘Ramana’ and based on the story of corruption. I am playing the character of ACP Gabbar, who turns leader for a vigilante group and is en-route to end corruption in the city. It’s releasing on 1st May 2015 and also stars Shruti Hassan and Prakash Jha. Q: Is it inspired by the character of Gabbar in the famous movie Sholay? A: No. Gabbar is the hero in the film and a vigilante, who takes it in his own hands to put an end to crime and injustice. Both the characters are very different. Q: What motivates you to do a movie like this? A: I did ‘Gabbar is Back’ because of corruption. I am alarmed by the crime rates in India and even calculated the amount of money
gathered due to scams, to add up to 12 trillion dollars. I compared the crime rates between India and other countries and the numbers in India are astonishing. Crime rates are low in countries such as the UAE due to strict law enforcement, which isn’t the case in India. So you need a name like Gabbar, who may behave like a villain but his actions are of a hero. Q: You are famous as the “King of Action” in Bollywood. Are you going to take action sequences to the next level in this movie? A: The film is centered more around delivering a message, rather than action sequences. Most of the instances in the movie are inspired by real life events. Q: Are you doing any special songs for Gabbar? A: Yes, I am doing one special soulful song called ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ with Kareena Kapoor Khan, which happens to be the first song to be launched for this film. The song will take viewers through the emotional journey of the
couple making itself indispensable to the overall narrative of the film. Q: What’s it like working with Kareena Kapoor Khan? A: Bebo has been an integral part of my career. We’ve done many movies together and one can only hope we have many more to come. She is everything one could ever ask in a Bollywood actress. She will always know how deeply I appreciate her effort and expertise. I’m sure viewers are going to love her in this song. She has brought a kindness to our film like no other. We love working with each other. We had a great time while shooting for the song.
alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez. It’s the official remake of 2011 Hollywood movie ‘Warrior’ and based on the story of two estranged brothers, whose entrance into the mixed martial arts tournament forces them to come to terms with their past and each other. After this, I will have ‘Singh is Bliing’, a fantastic action comedy directed by Prabhu Deva and produced under my production company Grazing Goat Pictures. I am joined on screen by the very talented actresses Lara Dutta and Amy Jackson. We will shoot in Patiala, Punjab for this movie.
Q: Tell us about working with costar Shruti Hassan? A: I am working with her for the first time. She is playing my love interest in this movie. She is a beautiful, professional and talented actress.
In Jan 2016 I have ‘Airlift’ releasing, which is based on the invasion of Kuwait. I am playing the role of Ranjit Katiyal, an Indian-Arab billionaire who plans an ambitious evacuation mission to rescue 170,000 Indians in Kuwait during the Iraq invasion.
Q: Tell us about your new film projects? A: My upcoming films include ‘Brothers’, which sees me star
Q: Action and comedy films have been your forte so far. Do you have any unusual projects coming up?
A: I do films that I want to do, because they appeal to me in some way. I wouldn’t say that I only do action and/or comedy films, and if I do make these type of films, it is because I want to. I have worked in other genres, and really enjoyed it. I like to surprise my audience, so that they can never guess what to expect. Ultimately, I just love making films with people I admire and respect. Q: Do self-made actors like yourself have more motivation? A: Yes, I think so. But this isn’t the case for everyone, each case is different. It is only natural to protect and work hard for something when you have been through hell to get it in the first place. I myself had no godfather as such in the industry – so I worked hard and wanted to constantly improve myself. My goal was to strive to be better, and so it was this drive that got me to where I am today. The only reason I am still here in this industry today is because of God’s grace, my parent’s blessings and my fans’ love.

While chatting online one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message purportedly from a girl who committed suicide one year ago after a shaming video was shared on the internet. At first they think it's a hoax, until the girl begins to reveal the friends' darkest secrets. The mysterious messenger threatens the girls, telling them that if any of them log out and stop talking, one of them will die. This novel 'found-footage' horror from director Levan Gabriadze (and producer Timur Bekmambetov) has been attracting rave reviews and won the Most Innovative Film prize at the Fantasia Film Festival. Told entirely from the perspective of a computer desktop, Unfriended focuses on the mistrust that builds up among a group of high school students as the truth spills out about them.

Aerodynamically styled
The new small, light and stiff aluminium-intensive Jaguar XE is first in it’s class
“Powered by the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the acclaimed Jaguar F-TYPE, the XE S is capable of 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds”
The Jaguar XE redefines the concept of the sports saloon and is the driver’s car in its class. Its lightweight construction, streamlined styling, luxurious interior and outstanding ride and handling are testament to company founder Sir William Lyons’ vision: ‘The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive.’ The rear-drive XE is the only
vehicle in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque. This extremely robust yet light structure, together with double wishbone front suspension and an Integral Link rear axle, is fundamental to the XE’s innovative benchmark vehicle dynamics.

220PS Scirocco GTS unveiled
The new Scirocco GTS makes its debut as a separate and especially sporty GT version The spirit of the first Scirocco GTS (which made its debut in 1982) was carried forward into the year 2015 in the new GTS. The Scirocco is a pure bred European sports coupe which has been reinvented through the years to give it a timeless appeal. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 41 years ago, it became an icon of compact German coupés. The car caught the spirit of the age: over a million units of the Scirocco have been produced since then. Last summer a comprehensively refined generation of the sports car was launched, featuring, among other things, a completely new range of engines.
lding on this, Volkswagen unveiled the new Scirocco GTS – a sports car with 162 kW / 220 PS – in a world premiere at Auto Shanghai. Its engine is one of the most popular in the Scirocco range because it is sharing its design genes with the engine of the Golf GTI. A turbocharged directinjection petrol engine that is recognised as being one of the most agile four-cylinder engines in the world. It catapults the Scirocco GTS – either with a manual gearbox or with the 6-speed DSG – to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. Top speed: 246 km/h (DSG: 244 km/h). The average fuel consumption shows just how efficient the engine of the Scirocco is: just 6.1 l/100 km with a manual gearbox
and similarly economical at 6.4 l/100 km with a DSG gearbox. The first GTS was launched in 1982. There has been a Scirocco GTS before, in 1982, and that coupé was also related to the Golf GTI of its time, both technically and visually. The Scirocco was recognisable by a strikingly designed GTS stripe (which ran all round the silhouette of the car just above the sill), its distinctive sport seats and a gear knob in golf ball design. The GTI had the same sport seats (with different upholstery) and the golf ball gear knob. The new Scirocco GTS will be launched in Europe at the end of May, with China following in the summer. This marks the comeback of an icon, a straight-forward, mighty fast and exclusively-
equipped sports car. The Scirocco GTS will be equipped as standard with new 18inch “Norwich” alloy wheels; the popular 19- inch “Lugano” alloy wheels will be available as an option. The red brake callipers of the GTS can be seen through the spokes of both of these wheel options. In addition, the Scirocco GTS comes with the R-Line package "Exterieur" as standard, which includes distinctive R-style bumpers (at the front with integrated fog lamps and glossy black radiator and air inlet grilles), custom side sill extensions, a roof spoiler (also R-style) and a diffuser. The wing mirror caps are painted in stylish black and, just like its predecessor, the '82
Scirocco GTS, the new model can be ordered with a sporty GTS decal for the body as an option (standard in China). This option features two decorative red stripes that run centrally from the bonnet over the roof and the boot (if the car is painted in “Flash Red” the stripes are black). The new Scirocco is also enhanced by 3D GTS logos in the radiator grille and on the tailgate. The Scirocco GTS can be ordered in six colours: "Deep Black", "Indium Grey", "Urano Grey", "Pure White", "Oryx White" and, as already mentioned, "Flash Red". The interior of the Scirocco GTS is also customised, of course, and dominated by the sporty colours black and red.

Continued from page 81 Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in aluminium structure engineering enables exceptional fuel consumption and emissions figures: with the new Ingenium diesel engines, the XE can achieve 75mpg and 99g/km CO2 – the most efficient Jaguar ever. Powered by the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the acclaimed Jaguar F-TYPE, the XE S is capable of 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds. “The XE’s driving behaviour fully matches the promise of its seductive looks, and the emotional appeal is supported by state of-the-art approaches to efficiency, from aerodynamics to the advanced Ingenium engine family.” Kevin Stride, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar XE The aluminium-intensive Jaguar XE is the first model developed from Jaguar Land Rover’s new modular vehicle architecture. The long 2,835mm wheelbase and low seating position enable perfect proportions and a streamlined profile. The cabin offers outstanding levels of comfort and spaciousness. Exquisite materials and finishes combined with Jaguar craftsmanship make this a class-beating interior that’s unlike anything else in the segment. Jaguar’s new InControl infotainment system takes centre stage: its innovative 8-inch touchscreen brings fast, intuitive access to all features and functions – and iOS and Android smartphone apps. The XE has some of the most advanced driver assistance systems available. All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), developed through decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, can electronically gain traction in seconds and is ideal for use on low-grip surfaces, such as snow-covered roads. Laser projection technology enables the XE’s optional head-up display (HUD) to generate sharp, high-contrast colour graphics (such as vehicle speed and navigation) from a module smaller and almost a third lighter than existing systems, retaining clarity even in direct sunlight. A forward facing stereo camera is mounted behind the front windscreen to give the XE a 3D view of the road ahead: this highly accurate data is used for functions including autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system. The XE is the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built. It is also the first Jaguar to be equipped with electric power steering, tuned to provide exceptional responsiveness and feel but with lower energy consumption than hydraulic systems. The XE also offers the lowest cost of ownership and most environmentally sustainable credentials of all Jaguar models. Manufacturing of the aluminiumintensive Jaguar XE occurs at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in an all-new facility. Part of a £1.5bn investment, this flexible, purpose-built site will create 1,700 UK jobs. The new Jaguar XE is priced from £26,990 with first customer deliveries expected in June this year.

Bentley Mulsanne Speed Blue Train • Historic ‘Blue Train’ race commemorated with 85th anniversary Mulliner Limited Edition. • Mulliner artisans pay homage to famous 1930 Speed Six with bespoke features & intricate historical references. • Total of four examples to be hand-crafted in Crewe for continental European customers. • Mulsanne Speed is world’s fastest ultra-luxury driving experience. Bentley Motors is commemorating the historic ‘Blue Train’ race won by the Bentley Speed Six in 1930 with a Mulliner Limited Edition – the Mulsanne Speed ‘Blue Train’. Debuting at the TechnoClassica show in Essen, Germany, just four examples will be hand-crafted in Crewe for customers in continental Europe. 85 years ago, Captain Woolf Barnato, Chairman of Bentley Motors and pioneering ‘Bentley Boy’, was staying in Cannes at the Carlton Hotel. He accepted a wager that not only could he beat the Calais-Mediterranée Express or ‘Blue Train’ back to Calais, but that he could be at his club in London before the train even reached the English Channel. He was, and
the remarkable victory has been talked about ever since. The ‘Blue Train’ Limited Edition is produced by the skilled craftsmen and women of Bentley’s bespoke coachbuilding division, Mulliner. Each features a number of delightful historical references and modern interpretations of design details from the original Speed Six. For example, the fluting pattern in the door panels and the rear quarter inserts echo the interior of Barnato’s original car. The dashboard facia features an expertly crafted veneer image of the original Bentley ‘Blue Train’ Speed Six. Meanwhile, the tread-plate plaques bear the wording ‘Blue Train 85 Years’ and the front grille features a square mesh design inspired
by original Speed Six. Richard Charlesworth, Head of the Bentley Heritage Collection, comments: “The Blue Train is one of the most famous and celebrated cars in the world, and it perfectly embodies the racing spirit of the Bentley. Woolf Barnato was a three-time Le Mans victor, but winning the Blue Train race captured the public’s imagination, and fuelled the legend of the Bentley Boys. By beating the Calais-Mediterranée Express he forever guaranteed the Speed Six’s place in automotive history.” The first ‘Blue Train’ Limited Edition delivered will also feature a personalised hamper, trimmed with Burnt Oak and Camel hide to perfectly match the interior of the car.
Mulliner has crafted beautiful leather cutlery holders and a leather rug wrap-around, both featuring ‘Blue Train’ embroidery. The hamper contains exclusive Robbe & Berking silver plated cutlery, Haviland Limoges porcelain crockery, Linley crystal champagne flutes and a 100 percent Angora picnic rug, woven in Scotland. Robert Engstler, Regional Director Europe, added: “The fact that we are producing just four of these Limited Editions is highly significant, as Barnato famously made it to the club in London four minutes before the train arrived in Calais. The unique design elements bring back nostalgic memories of one of the most legendary Bentleys of all times.”

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
Jubodhol win Battle of Bradford Table toppers extend lead at the summit
OBB meanwhile will be looking to Jubodhol 3-1 Old Bacca three points over ever-improving JackHammer yet it is the unbeaten bounce back with a win next week if Boys
The two Bradford sides in SLUK’s Jubodhol who continue to pave the way, they are to keep their title hopes alive. MOTM: Hamid Ali (Jubodhol) Division One this season faced off on with seven wins from their ten games, conceding just four goals. Thursday night and it was league leaders Jubodhol who stole the points with a convincing 3-1 victory over Old Bacca Boys. A double from Hamid Ali and a solitary strike by Abdul Karim finished off the game after Gulfraz Satty had replied for OBB. Victory keeps the table toppers at the summit of the league whilst their opponents slip to six points off their victors, knowing a win on the night would have moved them level at the top. It was a close game throughout with both sides playing the fast fluid football they have become known for this campaign. Jubodhol looked dangerous in front of goal all night and Ali continued his fine scoring record with two strikes and was unlucky not to make it a hat-trick. Karim’s individual effort all but finished the contest off whilst Satty could do no more than offer a consolation to his side. The lead at the top remains
PLAYER OFOF PLAYER THE WEEK THE WEEK Jubodhol’s Hamid Ali bagged two goals in his side’s derby win over Old Bacca Boys to guide the league leaders to their seventh win this season. Ali has helped his side keep their unbeaten record all campaign and will hope to continue finding the back of the net in the second half of the season.

Team NewBees 2-1 Hyde Park
The shock result of the night came from bottom side Team NewBees who recorded just their second win of the season over last year’s champion’s, Hyde Park. A brace for Waqar Hussain sealed the points and lifted his side to within two points of Super Six in ninth spot. Hyde Park, who lined up with a strong team, could not convert their chances on the night and resolute defending from their opponents ensured on a single Tyler Bussue strike would penetrate their goal. MOTM Waqar Hussain (Team NewBees)
Tetley’s Tino 2-1 Borussia Teeth
Goals from Ismail Malik and Wahab Hussain earned Tetley’s Tino their fifth win of the season as they defeated Borussia Teeth by two goals to one. Just two points now separates third to seventh in the Division One table with Tino closing in on those above them with the three points. Their opponents managed to reply through a fine effort from Shipon Miah. MOTM Ismail Malik (Tetley’s Tino)
NFA 0-1 Al-Aqsa
Things keep going from bad to worse for last year’s runner-ups, NFA, as they suffered another defeat, this time at the hands of Al-Aqsa, to put them in an unlikely relegation battle. NFA just cannot seem to find a win this season, picking up just two victories in their ten games, and suffered their third loss thanks to a last minute goal from Aminul. THE WORLD IS YOURS – FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS MANNY PACQUIAO By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Mayweather (47-0 KO 26) vs Pacquiao (57-5-2 KO 38) is finally happening this weekend (2nd May 2015) in Las Vegas, America. The undefeated American against the congressman from Philippines who has won world title belts in seven of ten weight classes from flyweight to super welterweight. It is hard to describe the magnitude of this fight, but to a boxing fan it’s similar to an England football fan watching England in the final of the world cup. The tickets for this fight at the MGM Grand sold out in a minute of going on sale. This fight has been debated and mooted since Mayweather and Pacquiao moved up to welterweight in 2009, but the fight did not happen for reasons linked to drug tests and money splits to promotional problems. Asian Express in its October 1st edition was correct in predicting that this fight would take place in early 2015 because the anticipation of these gifted boxers eventually fighting each other has taken this fight to the level it is now and it probably needed that extra time to reach its financial peak . Also this fight had to take place now because both boxers have almost reached the end of their fighting careers and winning this
Khalil Alam
bout will help cement their boxing legacy. This fight has eventually taken place because of one man’s agreement and that is Mayweather himself. Mayweather will be making an estimated 120 million pounds from this bout and the multimillionaire known as “Money” controls much of the boxing business like no other fighter ever has in the history of the sport. Mayweather is probably the richest boxer or sport person ever and earns more money in a year than sport personalities like Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James and Roger Federer. As a boy Mayweather was very poor and a lot like a Hollywood movie he has made it from rags to riches and lived the American dream where the “world has certainly become his for the taking.” Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum is confident that their man will be the one to put a dent in the Mayweather armour and give him his first defeat in 47 fights and said “Pacquiao has the speed and the power to [track down and wound Mayweather]. Oscar De La Hoya was bigger too, a lot bigger than Floyd. He got beat up. And Floyd’s going to get beat up too.” This is certainly an intriguing and historical boxing bout between two legends of the sport with contrasting fighting styles but, in my opinion I see Mayweather winning this bout due to his supreme boxing ability even though I expect Pacquiao to cause Mayweather problems early in this fight with his speed and agility. However as the fight enters the later rounds I expect Mayweather to gain control and start landing more accurate and point winning shots a lot like he did in his previous one sided victory over Juan Manuel Marquez. Whatever the outcome it certainly will be entertaining.

‘Bring on black’ Kickboxing star clinches brown belt CHAMP: After clinching his Brown belt, Esa Hussain is now just one belt away from the Black
For more than three years, a kick boxing prodigy from Bradford has been working his way up to his black belt status and now, at the age of just eight-years-old, he is 12 months away from reaching that goal. Esa Hussain picked up his eighth official belt earlier this month and with Brown now ticked off the list, there is only the black belt left to finish his growing collection. Earning the accreditation through Azar Farooq’s Kick Boxing Academy, the Hollingwood Primary School pupil became the youngest at the club to achieve the feat. Explaining what he had to complete for the award, he said: “I had to do all the moves and combinations from my past belts and then my Brown at the end. “I only made one mistake and when I finished, I was really tired because it lasted about one-and-a-half-hours. “Now I want my black belt by my ninth birthday.” In preparation for his assessment, Esa had received additional support from a couple of classmates who spent
extra time with him after class.Trainer, Azar Farouq, added his praise for the young sporting talent, and all those who have helped him. “To achieve any belt in this sport is an achievement in itself and Brown is obviously one of the toughest, coming just before the Black,” he said. “Esa has worked really hard to achieve this latest award and the support he received from other classmates such as Muizz and Waleed, as well as his father really helped him.” Esa’s father, Amjed Hussain, has supported his son from the first day he said he wanted to take up the sport and said it had been fantastic to see him grow so much in the sport over the years. “We are all really proud of what Esa has achieved and continues to achieve in kickboxing,” he added. “This is his eighth belt and now it is all about earning that black belt and doing so around his ninth birthday.” Esa will next be in competition in May, at the Azar Farooq Kickboxing Tournament.
COLLECTION: Esa now has eight belts in his collection and hopes to earn his next around his ninth birthday

Asian football ‘out of murky waters’ AFC re-elect chief for second term
FIFA president Sepp Blatter praised the president of the Asian Football Confederation, Shaikh Salman of Bahrain, for ‘cleaning up’ the confederation following its corruption charges. In a speech to delegates at the AFC's congress on Thursday, Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term as FIFA president in next month's election, gave an uncharacteristically lowkey speech about the improvement in the AFC since former president Mohamed Bin Hammam was banned for life two years ago. Bin Hammam was kicked out of soccer for
his part in a bribery scandal in 2011 and was replaced in 2013 by Shaikh Salman, who was reelected as AFC president unopposed later on Thursday. Blatter told delegates from the 47 Asian nations that Salman had shown ‘a remarkable sense of organisation and diplomacy to bring back the boat of the AFC that at certain times has been in waters not so very clear and not so very clean’. The 79-year-old, addressing Salman, who is supporting Blatter in his quest to be re-elected as FIFA president next month, continued: “You
have brought back this boat since 2013 and it is only justice when this congress later on will reelect you as leader of the AFC. You merit a big compliment, Shaikh Salman.” Blatter's support for the Bahraini was only to be expected as Salman declared the AFC's support for Blatter after its extra-ordinary congress in Australia in January. However, Blatter's speech lacked his usual vibrancy and at the end he received warm, rather than overwhelming applause from the delegates.

Prove myself...again WALK & TALK Anwar determined ahead of Sheffield bout Back page story continued
BOXER: Anwar says he is ‘110 per cent prepared’ for the bout later this month
“I'm feeling great ahead of the fight,” he said. “I’ve been working harder than ever to prove myself again and get back in the mix for the British title, this time at welterweight, which I feel is a more suited weight for me. “Training has been excellent. I have had the opportunity to work with lightwelterweight unified world champion Danny Garcia for two weeks and then train in Marbella at the MGM Gym with former GB Captain Tom Stalker. It was an experience that cannot be beaten.” Since winning his Prizefighter title in 2011, Anwar has struggled for consistency in his form, losing three of his last five fights.
However, victory over Hardy earlier this year was a big boost and he remains confident in his abilities against the top welterweight opponents. “As a fighter I'm 100% confident I have the tools but no fight is easy,” he said. “Every fight you have to be prepared for 110 per cent. “I'm working hard and I know my opponent will be doing the same so I guarantee the fight will be exciting as he is a come forward fighter and styles make fights.” Anwar and Evans will face off at the Ice Arena Sheffield on Friday 15th May with tickets available via phone on 07506 709913.

‘Prove myself...again’ Anwar determined ahead of Sheffield bout
READY: Adil Anwar will face off against Dale Evans at the Ice Arena Sheffield on Friday 15th May
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Leeds boxing champ, Adil Anwar, is set to return to the ring later this month as he looks to record back-to-back victories for the first time in over two years and reboot his promising career. The ‘Platinum Kid’ was back to his best in March as he
defeated Ryan Hardy in front of a packed Elland Road crowd, in turn picking up the vacant International Masters Bronze welterweight title. With home support in his corner, the former Prizefighter champion eventually won on points after a dominant display which saw his opponent hit the mat in the seventh round and stumble to the final bell. However, on Friday 15th
May, he is set for a completely different test as he takes on Sheffield-born Dale Evans, in the South Yorkshire city’s Ice Arena. Speaking ahead of the bout, Anwar says he is determined to ‘prove himself again’ and has been training with some of the world’s best boxers in preparation.
