A call for Foodbank will face

‘great difficulty’ in three months time

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A popular foodbank, which has been running for more than a decade, is appealing for more donations after another sharp rise in service users. Three years ago, the Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank delivered just over 1,400 food parcels throughout 2011. Last month, the same charity was stretched to

breaking point, as they boxed up around 1,030 parcels in just July alone. The increase in numbers is now beginning to take its toll on the charity with the group’s founder, Lashman Singh, warning that if the trend was to continue, the foodbank would be in serious danger in three months. “Last month it was a five week month and we gave out more than 1,000 food parcels, which was yet another record number for us,” he

said. “The problem we are facing now is that there has been a decrease in donations. Usually the pews here are piled high but the amount of food we are now receiving through donations doesn’t cover what is going out. “If we didn’t purchase the goods we have on the palettes we wouldn’t be able to do a food parcel. The rate we now have to spend the money means that in three months time, we will be in

great difficulty.” The foodbank, based at St Mary's Church in East Parade, is run by volunteers who help pack the huge quantities of food and non-perishable items for families and individuals across Bradford. Working through agencies, the parcels are handed over on a weekly basis and then distributed to those most in need. With the major problem, of donation numbers falling, the foodbank now also has to contend

help with the possibility of losing their premises after the church they are based at was put up for sale. A bid was recently turned down for the site yet it remains on the market with the vendor described as ‘willing to consider offers for the whole or part of the property’. Despite the future of the church still unknown, Mr Singh says he remains calm about the foodbank’s longevity. “I know very little about the sale to be honest but we are all in the same boat that we don’t know how long we have left here,” he said. “I’m not worried about the situation though. Society will not see us go down the pan. “We have been serving the community of Bradford for more than a decade now and have become part of the city. “Our volunteers are extremely passionate and helped us establish a good record over the years which makes me confident that another location will become available if we move on.” He added: “If not, we could always store it in our garages.” Up to 12 charities currently use the Catholic Church.

FOR SALE: The disused St Mary’s Church currently homes up to 12 charities who are all at risk of losing their premises should the site be sold

PARCEL: More than 1,000 food parcels were prepared by a team of dedicated volunteers last month, a record number for the charity

Apprenticeships in Leeds

August 2014 - 3rd Edition

Private Hire Vehicle drivers request bus lane priority

Young people in Leeds wondering what’s next after their GCSEs can take their first step onto the career ladder at a special event this week. Hundreds of 16-18 year-olds are expected to attend the business administration apprenticeship event at the Carriageworks Theatre on Friday 29th August. Running from 1pm-4pm, the event will give young people a chance to find out how to get a foot in the door at local companies. Apprenticeship opportunities will be available with firms including Arndale Solicitors, Yazoom Telecom and Leeds charity St George’s Crypt. Also attending will be interpreting and translation firm TheBigWord For more information or to book a place at this week’s event, visit www.eventbrite.co.uk

Hospital to Home’s winter lifeline

A pioneering project, which looks to help vulnerable older people get back on their feet after a stay in hospital this winter, has been handed a huge cash boost. The Hospital to Home scheme (H2H) has been given £300,000 to support hundreds of local people as they settle back into home life after an illness or injury. Managed by Age UK Leeds in partnership with Leeds City Council, local health services, British Red Cross and other community and voluntary sector groups, the project will see a team of dedicated volunteers working to prevent older people going back into hospital once they have gone home and making sure they don’t become isolated while they recover. Volunteers will be recruited from local charities as well as the city’s 37 council-funded neighbourhood networks.

Plan for your music festivities

Bradford Council is encouraging Bingley Music Live revellers to plan their travel in advance for the weekend of the festival between 29th and 31st August. Thousands of festival goers are expected to travel to the Bradford Council-run festival in Myrtle Park in Bingley. Bingley has excellent transport links with trains coming to the town from Leeds, Bradford, Skipton, Lancaster and Morecambe. There are also buses from Bradford, Leeds and Keighley that take you to the town. Those travelling to Bingley Music Live should visit www.wymetro.com, where they will find bus and train timetables, a Journey Planner and real-time information to help with their travel arrangements. Festival organisers have also laid on a regular Park and Ride service to ferry drivers from the car park at UKAR (the former Bradford and Bingley offices) in Crossflatts to the town centre venue. Car sharing is also being promoted by Freewheelers and Gocarshare, which use the internet to connect drivers and passengers to help share the cost of travel.

PETITION: Private Hire Vehicle drivers across Leeds are signing a petition to allow them access to bus lanes, pictured (l-r) petition helper, Khalid Hussain, co-organiser, Mohammed Sajaad

‘We want access’

With the cost of living rising, the saying ‘every penny counts’ may be truer than ever before, and for Leeds’ private hire drivers, the time has now seemingly come to take action. A petition, set up earlier this month, is currently gathering signatures to allow the private hire vehicles (PHVs) into bus lanes alongside hackney carriages and buses. As of 5th August 2014, there were approximately 4,868 PHV licensed drivers registered to 3,739 vehicles and 84 operators. Under current rulings by Leeds City Council, these drivers are not allowed access to bus lanes, yet the 550 hackney carriage drivers in the city have been able to since 2012. In other council’s across the UK, such as Liverpool, Oxford, Sheffield and York, both types of drivers are able to utilise the lanes. Mohammad Sajaad has been a private hire driver with Yeadonbased SJK Private Hire for eight years and is one of the petition’s organisers. Like many drivers, he is affected by the rules on a daily basis and now he wants to see greater rights available for colleagues working in his sector. “This petition will not only benefit the drivers of these cars and the operators, but also just

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

regular people in Leeds,” he said. “With no PHVs in traffic during peak times, congestion will be cut down considerably for road users. “Also, customers using our vehicles will be saving money as by opening up bus lanes to us, we can cut prices by utilising the quickest routes available to places.” He added: “If the council were to act now, it would also have a positive impact on the environment, and their obligation to cut the carbon footprint of the city would be met.” Mr Sajaad, alongside fellow petition organisers and co-helpers, has already begun gathering signatures in an attempt to challenge the authority. With thousands of potential drivers to visit, it is likely to take at least two to three months to complete before it can be handed over to Leeds City Council and Leeds Licensing and Registration. Khalid Hussain, one of the cohelpers in the project and Pudsey B Line driver, said he was eager to address any issues which bus companies and commuters may have. “There are of course going to be

some people from the bus companies who will feel this move would impact them in a negative way but that is definitely not the case,” he said. “A PHV is faster than a bus so we won’t be slowing anybody down, and the bus lanes are so underused currently that our presence in them would surely not overcrowd them.” A Leeds City Council Spokesperson said: “The Leeds bus network carries nearly 80 million passengers annually and bus priority measures provide valuable time savings and service reliability across the city. “The possibility of allowing private hire vehicles to use bus lanes has been previously investigated by the council. “It was considered however, that to take such a decision with over 4,000 private hire vehicles registered in Leeds would have a significant detrimental impact on bus reliability and make the bus lanes more intimidating for cyclists.” If you would like to learn more about the petition or get involved, please email us: info@asianexpress.co.uk

SIGN UP: The petition will be taken to more than 4,000 drivers across the city

World-renowned Islamic scholar delivers a clear message in Bradford

Tariq Jameel

By Khalil Alam

info@asianexpress.co.uk

Professional men and women gathered at a unique event in Bradford to listen to a message of tolerance and unity by the worldfamous Maulana Tariq Jameel. Refreshingly, the dinner event was not a charity collection. Respected for his simple and modest lifestyle, Maulana Tariq Jameel from Pakistan, he is frequently seen delivering powerful sermons in his calm and soothing manner all across the globe. The much-celebrated figure revered by professionals, celebrities, politicians due to his use of scientific examples to support his lectures, has a significant social media presence, as well as millions of followers. Famed for changing the lives of thousands of people, the scholar’s humble and eloquent style of explaining the purpose of human life attracts people in the droves. His visit in Bradford had been completely funded and organised by Shakeel Shah, Director of Shaks Specialist Cars Ltd in Huddersfield and his close friends. The function was based on an invitation only entry with the guest list limited to 300 people at the new recently opened Orissa Dining on

Manningham Lane, Bradford. Maulana Tariq Jameel mesmerised the audience as he talked about tolerance of other religions and also the different sects in Islam. His references from the life of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), and the Quran left the listeners speechless and enlightened, as he raised questions about daily conduct and following the guidelines set by Islam.

So powerful was the sermon delivered by the speaker that a number of attendees both men and women, who were non - Muslims, approached the scholar after the event and wanted to know more about Islam. Shakeel Shah, who is also the cousin of Maulana Tariq Jameel said: “I’m so proud that we were able to bring Maulana Tariq Jameel to Bradford. This event was

“Refreshingly, the dinner event was not a charity collection, no contributions or collections were made” Many people were drawn to tears as they heard of the cruelty inflicted upon the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) by non-Muslims, and how despite bleeding from being attacked, he continued to show compassion and intense love for all human kind - irrespective of caste, creed, or color.

organsied to give a true understanding of what Islam teaches – tolerance and compassion, not your usual charity event or an excuse to raise money or ask for donations. “This is the first time such an event like this has been organised in the UK for Maulana Tariq Jameel

and I am extremely pleased it went exceptionally well. “I’ve been inundated with people coming to thank me for this event, however I’m honoured to have been able to give something positive back to our community. “I’d like to give a special thanks to the staff at Orissa Dining and my close friends who have worked whole heartedly in making this event a success and memorable one”. Maulana Tariq Jameel himself was overwhelmed by the type of guests that have arrived as he is usually called to Mosques to deliver speeches. Speaking to the Asian Express, Maulana Tariq Jameel said, on the matter of the conflict in Gaza: “It’s inspiring and commendable for people outside the conflict zone to

be so deeply moved on what’s going on. “I’d like to remind people that whilst standing for injustices upon a people anywhere in the world, we keep a balance of what’s happening in our own homes – love, education, health, prosperity. One cannot help someone else if their own house is not in order. “I had the opportunity to visit a prison in Preston today, and am saddened to see how many of the inmates are Muslim. I have to raise the question and ask - what have we been teaching our children? “Speak to your children, be involved in their lives at every level, speak to them with love and develop a relationship of mutual trust, so that you can guide them in the right direction and avoid them from falling into the wrong hands.”

Rahat returns to Leeds Charitable contribution from major event sponsor

With thousands of music lovers getting ready to head down to Leeds’ First Direct Arena this weekend for the return of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, one event sponsor already has generous plans on how to distribute any profits. The Bradford-based business, Pasha, have taken the selfless decision to give one hundred per cent of their profits to the Penny Appeal charity, which works with those most vulnerable in Gaza. On a night which is bound to live long in the memory for those who attend, spectators will also be contributing to a much more serious humanitarian cause. Shabir Hussain, Pasha’s events co-ordinator, said the business had taken the decision after seeing hundreds of vulnerable children killed in the ongoing conflict. “We are proud to say that every penny of our profit from the night will be going to the Penny Appeal charity, which will be helping innocent Palestinians in Gaza,” he said. “This decision is purely

based on humanitarian reasoning. We are in such a fortunate position to have what we have here, and there are all those people suffering through no fault of their own. “I would like to urge all music fans out there to get there tickets now and not only enjoy an amazing night of music from one of the world’s biggest artists but also make a difference to those most in need.” Following on from last year’s electric night, Rahat returns to Leeds on Saturday 30th August aiming to recreate the same infectious energy he and his Qawwali band generated last September. The star’s only Northern England show on his Back to Love Tour promises to be a memorable evening with a range of Bollywood songs and heartfelt melodious tunes performed from his new album. The King of Qawwali and Sufi Music can be seen from just £25 on the night but make sure you book your tickets fast because once they are gone, they are gone.

Generosity tops agenda in holy month

£6MILLION raised during Ramadan Yorkshire’s Muslim community have been digging deep in their pockets throughout the month of Ramadan as millions of pounds were raised for charity. Across the county, a huge total of £6million was donated in just four weeks time, calculating to more than £200,000 every day. In Leeds alone, more than one million pounds was raised through generous donations across the city’s mosques and through fundraising initiatives. Imam at Leeds’ Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim MBE, said the amount was a fantastic reflection of the generosity of Yorkshire’s Muslim communities. “There is always a great response during Ramadan but with the current conflict in Gaza and Israel, this year has seen even more money donated than before,” he said. “A lot of children have been affected by the conflict and people

are seeing these images and doing whatever they can to help. “This money raised will go towards helping the innocent civilians with the construction of infrastructure and in the form of humanitarian aid.” He added: “Once again I think this substantial amount just goes to show how charitable the Muslim community is. People may be going through difficult circumstances themselves but they are still willing to give what they can to help others.” Mr Asim, as well as praising the Muslim community, also added his thanks to the government for their pledge to match any donations to the Disaster Emergency Committee. This means the actual total of funds raised during the month will increase due to governmental funding. On Friday 15th August, civic leaders met in Bradford to recognise the efforts of people in Yorkshire at

a special ceremony co-hosted by the Bradford Council of Mosques and Faith Associates. Guests invited to the event included senior Yorkshire Imams, scholars and community leaders as well as the Charity Commission and the Department for International Development, which has already pledged £600 million in aid towards the Syrian crisis. Shaukat Warraich, chief executive of Faith Associates - a nontheological organisation which works with ethnic minority faithbased communities across the UK – said: “We have been overwhelmed by the unprecedented response of local communities across the UK. “Bradford is the second in a series of special events celebrating local community fundraising efforts and is also a platform to discuss what more can be done to help the humanitarian relief efforts on the ground in conflict zones.”

PRAISED: Imam at Leeds Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim MBE, said the huge total donated was a great reflection of the generosity of the county’s Muslim community

SUCCESS: Rajandeep Grewal will now study to become a pilot at the Oxford Aviation Academy as of September

www.asianexpress.co.uk

August 2014 - 3rd Edition

Student celebrates A Level success with aviation appointment

The sky’s the limit By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A high-flying pupil form Pudsey is preparing to take to the skies later this year after piloting his way to success in his A Level exams. Rajandeep Grewal, of Fulneck School, has had his heart set on becoming a pilot for a few years now and has now moved one step closer to fulfilling that dream after results day last week. For the past 18 months, the 18-year-old has been taking weekly flying lessons as the Multi-flight Flight Training Centre at Leeds Bradford Airport, alongside fellow student, Jedd Waterson. The pair were both celebrating on Thursday 14th August after opening their results envelope to reveal top grades, allowing them continue their aviation training. Both teenagers will now head to Oxford for the continuation of their studies, yet unlike others from the area, they will not be attending the world renowned university. Instead, it will be the Oxford Aviation Academy which will house the ambitious students as they prepare for a life in the skies. Fulneck School Principal Deborah Newman said she was extremely proud of all the students and praised both aspiring pilots for their

commitment to their studies. She said: “I was delighted to hear that both Jedd and Rajandeep have been accepted to train as pilots. “Whilst their heads may have been literally in the clouds for the last year, they have well and truly had their feet on the ground. “Both have shown a commendable commitment to their chosen career, working hard to learn how to fly at the same time as studying for their A-Level examinations. “They knew they had to study hard, and their efforts have been rewarded today.” Students and staff at Fulneck school were also celebrating for a much more inclusive reason last week after achieving an array of ‘outstanding’ results. Mrs Newman added: “We are exceedingly proud of the outstanding success of our Sixth Form students this year. “It has been very busy recently and I am delighted that so many of our students have secured their first choice of university. “These results are well deserved and a reflection of the hard work of both the students and staff. “They demonstrate that the School is providing the academic rigour and challenge as well as excellent pastoral support which ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.”

Q&A with your property law solicitor

DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to landlord and tenant law.

• What are the legal grounds for evicting a tenant from a let property? There are a total of 17 (mandatory and discretionary) grounds for possession of a property as specified within the Housing Act 1988. The following are some of the common grounds that are relied upon: • Rent arrears • Tenant breaches a contractual (lease or tenancy) term other than rent payments • Damage to the property caused by the tenant • My landlord has indicated he wants me to vacate the property. How much notice am I entitled to from my landlord? The notice period depends on which ground(s) the landlord seeks to rely upon. The notice must contain specific information and provide you with a clear date by which you are expected to vacate the property. Please contact us and we will advise further. • What is a ‘tenancy deposit scheme’? The landlord must put a tenant’s deposit in a government-backed tenancy deposit scheme if you rent your home on an assured shorthold tenancy that started after 6 April 2007. The deposit will be registered and returned to the tenant at the end of the tenancy provided certain conditions are met.

• What is the court procedure for evicting a tenant? Court action can be taken to evict the tenant at any time after the end of the notice period if the notified tenant fails to leave by the end of the notice period, stating which ground you are seeking possession. There is a special court procedure landlords can use if they are reclaiming possession of a property after the service of a Section 21 notice and there is generally no need for a court hearing. This is called the ‘accelerated procedure’, which will normally take about 8-10 weeks. In any event the court can make a possession order ordering eviction of the property provided you have proved the ground you rely on and it is reasonable to do so in all the circumstances. Contact us to discuss further.

Mother attacked by bogus officers in front of two sons A mother and her two children were subjected to a terrifying robbery at their family home in Huddersfield earlier this week as two men entered the family home, claiming to be police officers. The house, on Ochrewell Avenue, Deighton, was entered by the men on the evening of Friday 15th August at approximately 11.30pm after they told the woman they were investigating an incident that had occurred in the area. Once inside, the mother was punched in the face and knocked to the ground as the bogus officers stole a large quantity of Asian gold jewellery. As a result of the attack, the victim was left with two black eyes whilst the young boys, aged seven and five, were not injured in the robbery. Police are now appealing for information in regard to the crime which comes as theft of jewellery from Asian households continues to rise. Both suspects are described as being Asian, speaking with Pakistani accents. The first had a stocky build, was around 5ft 8’ in height and was wearing a light coloured hooded top with white writing across the shoulder blades. He was also wearing black gloves

and dark trousers at the time. The second male, was wearing a black coloured top with the hood up which was fastened across the front disguising his face and black trousers. Detective Constable Andy Clayton, from Huddersfield CID, said he wanted to speak to anybody who may have any information which relates to the incident. He said: ‘‘I am appealing for any members of the public who may have seen anyone matching the descriptions in the area around the time of the incident to get in touch. “I would also be keen to hear from anyone who may have been offered Asian jewellery for sale and harbours any suspicions around its origin. ‘‘This was a very disturbing incident for the victim and her young children but these type of offences are rare and we do not believe there is any wider danger to people in the local area and we are investigating this incident as a targeted robbery.’’ Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Andy Clayton at Huddersfield CID on 101 or by calling Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on: 0800 555 111.

Family ‘Walk Ten’ for Kirpal Marie Curie event raises vital funds for hospice

LOVED: Kirpal Singh used to paint at Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice until he sadly passed away

CHARITY: Palminder Singh completed the Walk Ten challenge in memory of her father-in-law, Kirpal Singh, pictured here with fellow walkers and children, Anupreet Malhi and Gavan Malhi

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A family from Bradford laced up their walking boots last weekend as they took part in the Marie Curie Walk Ten event. On Saturday 23rd August, husband and wife, Palminder and Parvinder Malhi, were joined by six family members as they embarked on the long trek in memory of Parvinder’s father, Kirpal Singh. Kirpal sadly passed away recently at the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford and the group dedicated their walk to him whilst raising funds for the hospice. The couple explained how Kirpal had enjoyed using the facilities on offer at the Bradford site and used to go to the day centre to do painting. “We feel they helped prolong his life by discovering his hidden talent and giving him a passion to paint,” Palminder and Parvinder explained. “He enjoyed the time there at the day centre and was treated with respect and made to feel very welcome. “Unfortunately his health deteriorated very quickly and because of the Marie Curie Hospice and their wonderful team we got to spend a lot of time with him to say our goodbyes properly.

“They do a really wonderful job and we appreciate everything they did for ‘Mr Singh’ as he was known by all at the Bradford Marie Curie Hospice.”

Malhi, aged nine, added: “I am taking part in Walk Ten to raise money for the Marie Curie Hospice and to say thank you to them for helping my granddad.”

“They do a really wonderful job and we appreciate everything they did for ‘Mr Singh’ as he was known by all the Bradford Marie Curie Hospice.” The husband and wife team were joined on the walk by several family members who also had their own special message prior to completing the challenge. Anupreet Malhi, Kirpal’s granddaughter, aged 13, said: “I am doing the Walk Ten to give back to the Marie Curie Hospice that looked after my granddad,” whilst Kirpal’s grandson, Gavan

As well as the walk, at Harewood House, activities, live music and picnics were held on what was certainly a memorable day for all participants. All funds raised went towards helping the Marie Curie team continue to provide care to terminally ill people and support to their families at the Bradford hospice.

Gaza: A Jewish-inflicted holocaust By Ambreen Pervez info@asianexpress.co.uk

After watching the devastation, which unfolded in Gaza over the last few weeks, I am struck by and brought to tears by the selfless generosity and compassion and humanity shown by the people of Gaza. Every time a missile destroyed houses, mosques and schools leaving hundreds under collapsed buildings, Gazans rushed to help whoever and wherever - often putting themselves at risk. Time to reflect then on Western governments who cower to the Israeli leaders who are allowed to think that they are under no obligation to observe international laws that govern conflict zones. It is not only Israel that should be condemned for it’s belligerent behaviour, but also that of the rich Arab nations who profess to follow Islamic teachings, yet renege and fail to safeguard and support those who are weak and under oppression and occupation. If the Americans didn’t give Israel $1 Billion in aid every year, would overseas Jews flock to settle in Israel with its healthy economy, or would they stay in the country of their birth? Yes, Israel has a right to defend itself, but the Palestinians have right to basic human rights – all of which have been denied to them. Palestinian’s have a right to live in

the country of their birth, they have a right to live on their land that was taken from them by the British and given to the Jewish settlers in 1948. It’s almost like having squatters in your home and when you call the

police to evict them the police and other authorities tell you that the squatters have a right to live in comfort and peace and that there is nothing the police can do! How can the international leaders

sit back and allow this 21st century Holocaust to unravel? How and why is it that so many people have been allowed to die just because they are Palestinians and want the occupying forces to leave their land.

When the Jews were being persecuted by Nazi’s in Germany, they had other countries to flee to; however, the Palestinians have nowhere to go because they are blocked-in by land, sea and air. When the Berlin Wall came down there was international rejoicing, yet when Israel builds a wall with the pretext to protecting itself and in the process separating families, no one has the political, economic and moral might to stop this. The Jews themselves have suffered at the hands of Nazi Germany and one would think that they would be more empathetic to the suffering of others, but they seem oblivious to the fact that they are subjecting another people to the same horrors their forefathers experienced. After so many decades they still remember and remind the world of the atrocities of the Holocaust, yet continue with their terror upon Gazans – one which will be remembered in decades to come. Israel has been allowed to believe that it is invincible and that it does not have to account to anybody, however there is a greater power that will demand accountability if not in this life, then in the life to come. One thing has become clear though over the past few weeks. Regular every day people all over the world have been emotionally affected by what has happened in Gaza. A unanimous voice continues to rise – “it’s time for change”.

TRAGIC: Seemberjeet Kaur was found in the River Aire in December after going missing six weeks earlier

Depressed mother was ‘convinced’ she was dying Coroners verdict released following tragic death of Bradford woman By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A mother who went missing from her Bradford home last year had been researching ways to end her life before her body was spotted in a river in Leeds. 35-year-old Seemberjeet Kaur had been missing for six weeks when she was found in the River Aire in December 2013. She had become ‘convinced’ that her own organs were failing prior to her death and that she had begun to develop stomach cancer. She had also lost her job and became obsessed with caring for her daughter who was suffering from health problems at that time. Recording a verdict of suicide, Coroner Roger Whittaker, said Mrs Kaur was ‘exhausted by a feeling of despondency and despair over a period thinking she had been unwell’, adding ‘exhaustive examinations showed she was not’. Mrs Kaur had told her husband, Baljeet Singh Khan, that she wanted her death to be quick, with Mr Khan being so worried at one point that he had to hide the kitchen knives from his wife after she mentioned cutting her own wrists. In a short statement Mr Kang said: “It was an arranged marriage but one what we were both happy with as we spent time talking and getting to know each other. “She was always close to her family and spoke to them once or twice a week. She got on with everyone easily.” Mrs Kaur had been on anti-depressants when she was last seen on 23rd October, and was reported as missing after she failed to

pick up her daughter from nursery. It was later found that she had ordered a taxi from her home and travelled to a bridge in Saltaire. CCTV footage shows Mrs Kaur alone on a bridge and that was the last of what was seen of her until her body was spotted on 5th December. Coroner Roger Whittaker added: “I take the view she lowered herself into the River Aire and allowed herself to be carried downstream. “I record a verdict that she took her own life whilst the balance of her mind was disturbed.'

Free dog chipping

Dog owners are being encouraged to bring their pooches to Greenhead Park, Huddersfield on Wednesday 27th August from 1pm to 3pm. Kirklees Council dog wardens will be offering a free micro-chipping service – a microchip is a small electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice which is implanted under the skin of the dog, at a point roughly between the shoulder blades of the dog and stays there for the life of the dog. The microchip makes it possible for lost dogs to be reunited with their owners as all Kirklees dog wardens carry a scanner which will detect the microchip which is registered to the owners address.

CELEBRATE: Students across the whole of the UK picked up their GCSE results on Thursday, pictured are celebrating pupils from the Grammar School at Leeds

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

With college and sixth form students still coming to terms with their A-Level results, it was now time for the Year 11 students to receive their GCSE grades. Across the country, 600,000 teenagers, and mature students, ripped open their envelopes on ACHIEVEMENT: Mother of two, Zoeya Zahid, 28, left school when she was 16 and was determined to return to education to complete her GCSEs

Thursday 21st August to reveal their results and have a glimpse as to what their future may hold. At Bradford College, 17-yearold Mohsin Ali Hasan Munir was just one student who received his results earlier this week. Despite suffering from a rare skin condition that affects his life dramatically, the dedicated academic discovered he had achieved a C in Sociology, C in Media Studies, D in GCSE Psychology, D in Citizenship Studies and a D in English. Coming to College is an achievement in itself as Mohsin’s condition is so severe it could be fatal, yet that didn’t stop the determined student from achieving some fantastic results. Also celebrating at the college was 28-year-old mature student, Zoeya Zahid. The mother-oftwo had initially left school at 16 and balanced her studies with the raising of her children. “I always knew I wanted to go to university so I thought to myself, I’m not giving up,” she said. “I’ve got my kids and I love bringing them up,

but I thought I have to do something more for their future. “I’ve come back and I’m on my way now I have my results. I can get into Uni – I can actually apply.” Elsewhere, Bradford Girls Grammar School pupil, Zulaikha Yasir was celebrating after coming away with eight A*s, two As and one B grade. The 16-year-old said she was really nervous as she went into school on the morning yet soon was in a celebratory mood after seeing her grades. “It did come as a shock when I saw my grades,” she said. “I was really pleased and my Mum and dad

PROUD: Mohsin Ali suffers from a rare skin condition and was thrilled to receive his grades from Bradford College

were so happy for me. “I can now go on to study sciences and maths at college with the hope of then studying medicine at university.” Nationally, there was a rise in passes at A*to C, from 68.1per cent to 68.8 per cent. However, these figures were counterbalanced due to a fall in overall passes (A* to G) which fell from 98.8 per cent to 98.5 per cent.

School meals on the rise

Kirklees Councillors are being asked to consider a 5p rise in the cost of school meals from January 2015. There is usually an increase in price each September, but as there has been no increase in 2014 parents/carer will benefit from a few months where increased costs to the council are not being passed on. Kirklees school meals provide an excellent quality service. An increase of 5p per meal in January 2015 in advance of the usual annual increase in September 2015 would help ensure that this high quality is maintained. The cost of a school meal in Kirklees will remain competitive compared to other areas.

Cleaning up the cemeteries

Council workers are devoting a day to sprucing up Brighouse Cemetery, and are inviting local residents to help out. On Saturday 30th August, between 10am and 2pm, Council staff will be having a clean-up day in the cemetery, to ensure that the grounds are looking their best. To help out with this, volunteers would be most welcome. The cemetery is well looked after, but shrubs and weeds around the grounds seem to have had a growth spurt during the summer months, so some of the help required will involve weeding and pruning plants around memorials. Other jobs include litter picking, general tidying and the brushing of memorials. Rubbish bags will be provided, along with some equipment, and the Council will help with the removal of anything collected at the end of the day.

The latest list of tax cheats that would have cheated the Exchequer out of more than £25,000 if investigations had not been carried out, has been published on the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website. Each defaulter named has; either deliberately submitted inaccurate returns, deliberately failed to comply with an obligation, or deliberately committed a wrongdoing. Those named and shamed have chosen not to take the opportunity to fully disclose the extent of their tax liability or cooperate with our investigation. Defaulters have included restaurants, cleaning services, and hairdressers, for offences across a range of taxes including VAT, Income Tax, Corporation Tax and PAYE. HMRC’s Jennie Granger, Director General for Enforcement and Compliance, said: “The majority of people declare the tax that is due, but there are a small minority who try to evade their responsibilities. “Publishing taxpayers’ names is not something we do lightly. We are publishing the names of tax cheats as it lets the community know we are tackling this and encourage others to get back on track. “Each person named today has cheated the Exchequer and that’s unfair to those who pay their tax. In the last year, penalties have ranged from £10,000 to over £29 million. “We urge people to come forward, so we can help them get back on track. It is always easier if people make a full and prompt disclosure and co-operate with HMRC. If they do this, they will avoid being named”.

Following the success of last year, in which £5,000 was raised for local causes – the Children’s Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and Martin House Children’s Hospice, the event returns with the aim of smashing previous records. Whether you are an avid runner, or just want to enjoy a stroll around the picturesque park, the Give a Gift run is the perfect way to enjoy your Sunday. Fun activities will be put on for children on the day whilst an free refreshments and goodie bags will greet walkers, joggers and runners as they take a step towards helping the charities. Habib Khan, Give a Gift Ambassador, said he was looking forward to welcoming this year’s fundraisers and thanked them in advance for their attendance. “Last time out we aimed to

raise one thousand pounds for every kilometre so ‘5k for 5k’ and we were delighted to exceed this,” he said. “This year the run returns and is once again open to everybody who can help fundraise for these terrific local causes. This is a great opportunity to have an amazing day out with the whole family, regardless of your ability. “Last year we only had six weeks to plan the whole event but this time around there will be even more attractions available as we aim to raise even more funds for charity.” Former England Rugby international, Ikram Butt, said it is a great initiative to join in with after taking part last year. “I did the run last year and it was a great day where hundreds of people came out to join in with the fundraising efforts,” he said. “I hope this year will be even bigger

and better than that and look forward to another great day at Roundhay Park.” The run begins at 10.30am on Sunday 14th September at Leeds’ Roundhay Park and is open to all abilities. Register now at www.giveagift5krun.com or call 0113 277 3330, email info@giveagift.orf.uk

Top grades and a baby as well Pregnant mother has double the reasons to celebrate PASSED: Riyma Raziq obtained an A* in maths and a B in English, despite sitting her last exam whilst overdue, waiting for her baby

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

It wasn’t only teenagers collecting their GCSE results earlier this week, with adult learners across the country also finding out whether they had made the grade. In Halifax, Riyma Raziq was celebrating after achieving an A* in GCSE maths and a B in English, which she studied for at Calderdale Council’s Adult Learning Centre. To make things that extra bit special, just two days after Riyma’s final exam, she gave birth to a little baby boy. With aspirations of working in a school, the 35-year-old is well on her way to obtaining the required grades and has further plans to continue studying in the future. She had been volunteering as a nonteaching assistant at Cross Lane primary School and so was completing evening classes. Speaking after opening her grades, Riyma said: “I want to be a primary school teacher, so I need my GCSEs in English, maths and science. When I found out about the courses at Calderdale Adult Learning, I called the Council straight away. “I met with a tutor who helped me choose the best courses for me. I started GCSE maths and English classes last September at Horton House Adult Learning Centre in Halifax. “The best part was the tutors. At first I was nervous because it was a different

environment, and I wondered if I would be able to do the work, but my tutors really helped me through and motivated me from the start. “They gave me constant feedback on my work and helped me to improve, which prepared me for the exams. “It was great being around other learners who were my age and in a similar situation to me. We all helped each other, had fun during classes and have stayed in touch. “Being pregnant while studying wasn’t a problem for me – I just carried on, even when I was overdue during my exams.” Riyma adds that she now has her ‘gorgeous baby boy’ and has moved a step closer to her dream careers. She added: “Doing the classes has increased my confidence and skills in English and maths, and as soon as I have my GCSE science qualification I’ll be going to college for teacher training. “I would definitely recommend Calderdale Adult Learning to other people – in fact, my sister-in-law is about to enrol. I’m missing classes so much that I’m already looking into other courses that I can sign up for.” This year 36 adults did GCSE English and maths through Calderdale Council’s adult learning service, and more classes were provided than ever before due to high demand. All learners passed; 82.6% achieved grades A* to C in maths and 69.2% got A* to C in English. Both figures are higher than the national average.

Let’s go swimming

Castleford swimming pool reopened last week after being closed for more than a week because of flooding. Wakefield Council staff reported water being thigh deep as localised flooding hit homes and businesses across Castleford and Pontefract on Friday 8th August. It's estimated that tens of thousands of litres of contaminated flood water swept into the pool building, and it took days to pump it all out. The flooding mainly affected the pool's plant room which contains much of the equipment critical to operate the pool, but some flood water also got into the swimming pool itself. The pool has since had several changes of water and independent tests completed to confirm it is safe for use once again.

Shopkeeper stands up to would-be thieves By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Two thieves, who planned on robbing their local corner shop, saw their plans foiled after the shopkeeper thought they were playing a prank Bharti Patel has been running Ash’s Ryecroft Village Store for the past eight years and was subjected to an attempted robbery earlier this week.

Two youths, with balaclava masks over their faces, and carrying a gun, entered the store and placed a bag on the counter, demanding it be filled with money from the register. Mrs Patel is reported to have continued serving her customer as she thought it was just a hoax and told the two men to go away. After closing the till, the pair fled from the store empty-handed, leaving Mrs Patel unharmed and with the day’s takings still safe in

her possession. West Yorkshire Police are now appealing for help in finding the two ‘would-be’ thieves after speaking with Mrs Patel. A West Yorkshire Police force spokesman said: “Police were called to a shop on Landscove Avenue, Bradford, at about 3.45pm this afternoon to a report of a robbery. “Two men are reported to have entered the store and threatened a female member of staff with

what appeared to be a handgun, demanding cash. “They made off on foot, empty handed in the direction of Pit Hill. “Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing this evening to find the two men, who were described as white.” Anyone who witnessed the offence is asked to contact Bradford CID on 101 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Thousands of visitors flocked to the streets of Leeds this past weekend as the West Indian Carnival made its return to the city. Held annually on the last Monday of August, the giant celebration saw people travel from across the country to join in the fun at Europe’s longest running, authentic Caribbean parade. A stunning display of colour and joy winded its way through the streets of Leeds whilst events were held for people of all ages to bring the community together. What started in the 1960’s as one man’s remedy for West Indian homesickness now infuses a blend of jaw-dropping costumes, infectious tropical rhythms, mouth watering food and entertainment for everyone. Leeds City Council says they had hoped to raise between five and ten million pounds through this year’s event. Founder and Chairperson, Arthur France MBE, praised the carnival’s growth over the years via a statement on the event’s website. It read: “Carnival is not just about putting on a street party – spectacular as it is...It is about creating a cultural and artistic legacy for the UK – with carnival arts as a platform. “It is the best way I know to secure unity and harmony. We pride ourselves on welcoming everyone to this carnival – ours is an open invitation. “We will always put an authentic, warm Caribbean

PERFORMANCE: One of the many West Indian dancers who helped to make this year’s event yet another success

experience at the heart of what we do. “Because of this, today Leeds West Indian Carnival is much more than I ever dared to dream. It is quite simply the art and soul of the Caribbean.” The 47th annual carnival began

its route at Potternewton Park before travelling through Chapeltown and Harehills. Last year more than 150,000 were reported to have come out to celebrate the event whilst not even the rain could stop this year’s festivities.

Don’t dump your waste

Following a successful prosecution earlier this month, Wakefield Council are warning residents not to illegally dispose of their waste. The reminder comes after a young man was convicted of fly tipping and given a sentence of 60 hours of unpaid community work along with a fine for dumping waste in the south of the district. Cllr Maureen Cummings, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities said:”Fly tipping is a serious problem and something we are constantly working hard to improve across the district. “It costs the Council more than £150,000 every year – money which can be spent on other valuable projects. “We are reminding everyone to check that their waste is disposed by registered carriers and are encouraging residents to report fly tipping which can be easily done on the phone or online.” Asian

WANTED:

Bus sex attacker

Man wanted for questioning in connection with teen offences

August 2014 - 3rd Edition

Police have released a series of CCTV stills to identify a man they would like to speak to in connection with a series of sex offences taking place on the same bus route between Cleckheaton and Dewsbury. Detective Constable Joe Aspinall, from Dewsbury CID, said: “In one incident, which took place between 8.35am and 8.51am on 30th July, the suspect boarded the 268 bus from a stop outside Peacocks clothes shop in Heckmondwike town centre and sat close to an 18-year-old female. “‘Shortly after the journey began the suspect moved to sit next to the 18-year-old and proceeded to sexually touch the victim. The suspect then got off the bus at Northgate, Dewsbury and the victim informed the driver and the matter was reported to police. “The suspect is described as an Asian male, between 20 and 30 years of age, around 5ft 8’ tall and with a medium build. “We also believe the same man may have been responsible for a similar incident on the same bus route on 19th August which also involved an 18-year-old female victim.” Detectives investigating the sex offences are linking the same man to two earlier offences that took place on the 23rd May and the 19h June- also on the same 268 bus route- in which the suspect carried out an indecent act on himself. DC Aspinall added: “We have a good image of the man we would like to speak to regarding these offences and I would ask anyone recognising him to get in touch. “These crimes have left a number of women understandably distressed and upset by what has taken place and we need to identify this man and bring him before the courts. “I would also ask any other people who may have travelled on the 268 bus and either witnessed a similar incident and not reported it to police or perhaps saw one of the incidents detailed in the appeal to get in touch.”

IDENTIFY: A man, described as being Asian, 20-30 years of age, around 5ft 8’ tall and of medium build, is wanted in connection with two separate sexual offences on teenage girls

Pakistan Independence Day CELEBRATIONS: Flags were waved whilst the Pakistan national anthem was performed at the PMC last week

Young and old gather to mark annual celebration By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Dozens of people visited Sheffield’s Pakistan Muslim Centre (PMC) as the city marked Pakistan Independence Day with an array of performances and speeches from dignitaries and children. On 14th August, attendants headed down to the PMC for the annual event to mark the 67th anniversary of the South Asian country’s independence. With live performances from local and national artists, alongside local children, the event played a major part in bringing together people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Key speakers Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham congratulated the PMC for bringing together Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, and for constructively displaying how British Pakistani’s community cohesion and values are maintained despite many difficulties. The event commenced with attendees singing to the British and Pakistani National Anthems, concluding with an array of Pakistani and British delicacies.

ATTENDING: People from all backgrounds were invited to take part in the ceremony which brought Sheffield’s diverse communities together

PMC Chairman, Mohammed Ali, speaking on the success of the event said: “If anybody wanted to witness true face values of British Pakistani’s, the PMC Independence day celebrations was the place to be. “This event was all about showing the dual love people from Britain hold about, their or their parent’s, native homeland.” PMC Manager, Mukhtar Tufail, and Chief Executive, Dr Abdul Rob, confirmed the importance community centre’s play in developing local communities whilst also maintaining peace, stability and creating an environment of familiarity and trust In a shared statement they said: “We are very honoured that once again The Pakistan Muslim Centre has played a substantive role in bringing communities together. “The Pakistan Muslim Centre’s Independence Day created a platform allowing those elements of the community that do not ordinarily come together. “The need of such a platform is an absolute necessity in the current day and age where we are experiencing growing challenges that threaten strong community relations”.

Stop and Search

West Yorkshire Police has launched two key elements of the Best Use of Stop and Search scheme, Home Secretary Theresa May said earlier this week. While stop and search is undoubtedly an important police power, when it is misused it can be counter-productive. It can be an enormous waste of police time and, when innocent people are stopped and searched for no good reason, it is hugely damaging to the relationship between the police and public. The voluntary scheme, which was announced by the Home Secretary in April, is designed to contribute to a significant reduction in the overall use of stop and search, deliver better and more intelligence-led stop and search, and improve stop-to-arrest ratios. It will also provide the public with further information on the outcome of searches. From this week, police in Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale districts, will be leading the pilot for the force. UNITY: Pupils at Raising Explorers learn about the importance of not taking their daily provisions for granted

Palestine lessons

Teaching the fortunate about the least fortunate Children at a much loved after school club in Bradford have been showing their solidarity with children caught up in the GazaIsrael conflict with special lessons taking place during the summer holidays. Raising Explorers, based at Carlisle Business Centre, caters for children, offering extra tuition and a safe place to visit out of school hours.

With a strong emphasis on education, youngsters have not only been focussing on their core subjects these past weeks but also on wider issues around the world. Abu Mustafa, representative of the after school club, explained: “Here at Raising Explorers we believe that while children can benefit from nutritional food, a high level of education and resources including all the other

amenities in life. “It is important to teach the children and make them are aware of the ongoing plight of Palestinian children who unfortunately due to no fault of their own, lack the most basic of daily provisions that we in the UK can easily take for granted.” It is not the first time that the Raising Explorers team have shown support for worldwide

humanitarian causes. A fundraising event was organised in April, with the hope of raising money for the people of Syria. As part of the Keep Syria Warm campaign, the club, in partnership with InTouch Foundation and al Hikmah project (Keighley), managed to raise £2,750 for the cause.

‘On the road’ to success

Free weekly bus travel for aspiring young employees By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Young jobseekers across Leeds are getting an extra kick of motivation this month as a new scheme is launched aiming at getting them back into work. More than 800 young people aged 18-24 are being offered free weekly bus travel cards to help them get to college and work experience placements as part of the £1.2m Head Start programme. The scheme, which is run by the council, gives young people searching for jobs the chance to take up training and work experience placements with local employers. Calvin Rollins, 21, recently completed a placement through Head Start, working with Leeds City Council’s corporate and central services in Seacroft, and was able to travel from his home in Horsforth for free. Working as an admin assistant, Calvin, who had been out of work for more than six months, was able

to get to grips with a number of software packages and learn about working in an office environment. He said: “I got so much out of it and learned some great, practical skills that I think will stand me in really good stead when I go for interviews and jobs in the future. I also met some really great people who helped me a lot. “But it was a long way to go and if it hadn’t been for the free travel, I don’t think it would have happened and I wouldn’t have been able to get to the placement. Being able to get there for free has really helped me make the most of the opportunity.” Since completing the placement, Calvin has been supported to apply for a number of jobs and has even been put forward as a Head Start champion because of the excellent standard of his work. Launched earlier this year, the Head Start programme is designed to help unemployed people aged 18-24 find jobs by offering them supported work experience placements.

EMPLOYED: Calvin Rollins had been travelling for free to and from his placement with Leeds City Council’s corporate and central services, thanks to the Head Start programme

aspect to it.” At a special opening ceremony last week, dozens of guests gathered to welcome Bradford’s latest dining hot spot. A prayer was read before a ribbon was officially cut by the brother’s mother,

big hit with eaters,” he said. “From then, we knew that this concept deserved to stand on its own and so Habibi’s Mezze Bar was born. “There is nothing else like this in Bradford, where you can get this type of mouth-watering food, which also has a healthy

Spam a lot A

court has ordered retail department store giant John Lewis to pay damages to an individual for sending “spam” emails to customers. The successful Claimant, Mr Roddy Mansfield, a producer for Sky News, brought the case against John Lewis under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (‘the EC Regulation’). The EC Regulation makes it an offence to send unsolicited emails unless a customer is aware that they have optedin to receive such emails. Mr Mansfield began receiving the promotional emails after registering his details on John Lewis' website which opted him in for marketing using a pre-ticked consent box. Mr Mansfield said: “John Lewis argued that because I had not opted-out of receiving their emails, I had automatically opted-in.” The case highlights the need for all businesses to ensure that their marketing policies are in line with the law. Marketing campaigns must follow rules laid down by the Data Protection Act 1998 and the EC Regulation. Businesses are banned from sending marketing emails unless it can be proven that the recipient consented to them or was a customer. In this case John Lewis was unable to satisfy either requirement, therefore its use of customer information was deemed unlawful. The EC Regulation provides that for email, fax or SMS marketing campaigns,

consent from the recipient must be in the form of an ‘opt-in’ consent. This means that the proposed recipient must positively provide consent to being contacted in that way. It is possible however for businesses to send marketing campaigns via email, fax or SMS based on an ‘opt-out’ consent, this is known as the ‘soft-opt in’ exception, and applies when the following has occurred:• Contact details have been obtained from the recipient during the sale or negotiation for the sale of goods or services; • The marketing material related to the same or similar goods or services; • The recipient must be given the opportunity to opt-out at the time their information was collected and on each subsequent occasion where they are contacted. Following the court ruling, John Lewis stated: “We listen carefully to what our customers tell us about how and when we communicate with them and endeavour to do so in a manner that is convenient to them”. “We're sorry Mr Mansfield was inconvenienced by our emails.” Business owners should take note of the law, particularly in view of this decision and the increased use of online marketing initiatives. Generally, personal data must be processed fairly, lawfully and for specified purposes. We at Blacks have a specialist team dealing with all aspects of data protection and privacy.

The facts surrounding stunning S

tunning. It is an issue that poses an enormous amount of contention within the Muslim community. Why are some of us so antistunning? Do we know what stunning really entails? Are we aware of the amount of halal meat that is stunned in the UK? Stunning of animals before slaughter is a near-global practice. While some forms of stunning render the animal completely unconscious before slaughter (a practice which we at the HFA do not condone), others render the animal highly insensitive to pain before slaughter whilst they are still conscious (see table below for more information on stunning methods that the HFA allow and forbid). Our charitable arm – the Halal Food Foundation – recently attended an event up North; the majority of public comments and queries they received were focused on the ‘haraam’ or ‘forbidden’ aspect of stunning and the fact that we as a certification body should outlaw this practice and resort back to the prophetic method of animal slaughter. As some halal certification bodies in the UK have adopted a no-stun stance, it appears that some of their followers and advocates have been misinforming the community that stunned meat is not deemed permissible by Islamic law. However, what the public do not seem to have noticed is that even halal certification

bodies that do not have stunning as a part of their halal standard / general code of practice, nowhere in their official literature (online, external, hard copies) do they refer to stunned meat being haraam if the animal is alive at the point of slaughter. At the HFA we do not deem any animal halal unless it IS alive at the time of slaughter. Organic halal meat producers, Abraham Produce, asked the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) – who do not accept stunning – for their opinion on this matter and they said the following: “HMC is erring the side of caution by adopting a blanket policy to the issue of stunning and not certifying it. HMC has never claimed that all animals die due to stunning or that stunning the animal renders the

animal Haram automatically.” Other disagreements on stunning arise when individuals look at certain Quranic verses: “Forbidden to you (for food) are dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, and that over which has been invoked other than the name of Allah, that which has been killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a headlong fall or by being gored to death, that which has been partly eaten by a wild animal, unless you are able to slaughter (in due form), and that which is sacrificed on stone (altars).” (5:3) Those who are against stunning say that animals frequently die from stunning: we are told by Allah that the dead animal is forbidden to consume (as stated in the ayah above) – as mentioned before, if an animal was to die as a direct

By Zéna Butt, Information Officer Halal Food Foundation www.halalfoodfoundation.co.uk @HFF_UK

cause of the stun, this animal would not be declared or certified as halal by the HFA. Various tests and investigations have been carried out by ourselves in conjunction with the University of Bristol to deduce the voltage at which poultry can be stunned without being killed by said stun – and these currents have been duly put into practice. We also have HFA representatives present at plants and slaughterhouses to ensure that all animals are alive at the time of slaughter. Should the incredibly unlikely occurrence of an animal being killed by the stun occur, this animal will be swiftly removed from the halal production line. Another misconception that many have on stunning is that the blood of the animal remains in its body as its heart has stopped before its neck is cut –

The following information outlines what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable stunning methods to the HFA: For Poultry: waterbath is acceptable, whilst gassing is not. For Lamb, Sheep and Goat: head only electric stunning is acceptable, whilst captive bolt is not. For Cattle: nothing is acceptable, meaning captive bolt (penetrative or non-penetrative), percussive blow and penetrative pneumatic is not.

this is not the case as the animal is live at the time of slaughter. If the animal is alive at the time of slaughter, its heart is still beating meaning that its blood will drain out with ease following its slaughter. It is argued that stunning causes less blood to drain out of the carcass; university research has clearly showed that after five minutes from slaughtering, blood loss in birds and animals becomes identical, hence, this argument is invalid. The HFA do not certify stunning by a violent blow as this renders the animal completely unconscious prior to slaughter – an act that, as stated numerous times – we do not accept. The only methods of stun currently used and put into practice by the HFA is the waterbath stun of poultry – we do not accept gas stunning either. We do not believe that the stunning of animals prior to slaughter is haram as long as the animal is alive at the time of slaughter – which we categorically ensure it is. Amongst the industry (national and international) we are an incredibly trusted, reliable and reputable organisation; our halal certificate and accreditation is one that you can trust and so we were disheartened to learn that negative propaganda and malicious rumours are being spread about us and our products and we hope that this blog post has helped to clarify our stance on things.

Proud to be British... Proud to be Muslim... Proud to be Brummies Almost 30,000 visit the Big Johns Eid Mela held at Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

More than 30,000 people flocked to Edgbaston’s Cannon Hill Park last weekend to join in with Birmingham’s Eid Mela celebrations. Sponsored by food business Big John’s, the free day of entertainment was enjoyed by all ages with a host of activities and performances on show. Live music was provided by an array of artists from BritAsian favourites such as Bona Fide, Shide Boss, Hunterz and Sama Blake, to the Canadian-based Roach Killa. Of course, with all this talent on show, there needs to be a host with just as much personality so who better than BBC Asian Network presenter, Kan D Man, to help compère throughout the event. Meanwhile, away from the main stage, visitors were encouraged to get involved with one of the several stalls set up for the special day.

Stalls selling food, craft, music and jewellery ensured there was something for every interested shopper, whilst a funfair and sports area was perfect for the more active children – and parents – who wanted to get involved. The Kabaddi tournament proved a big hit giving avid sportspeople the chance to show off their skills on a public stage. Birmingham’s Eid Mela was held to mark the end of Ramadan and bring communities together to celebrate Eid in a cohesive, enjoyable manner. Now in its 14th year, the festival returned bigger and better than ever with culture, entertainment and food all perfectly blended into one. Councillor and chief of Birmingham Eid Mela Steering group, Zafar Iqbal, thanked all the sponsors, visitors and acts who helped make this year’s event another ‘star-studded’ affair.

“We are proud to be the main sponsors of this great annual event. It’s an opportunity for all religions and cultures to congregate together and celebrate the end of Ramadhan. The sun shone all day bringing more and more people out. Food was available and even Big Johns set up their own shop on the grounds serving favourites such as Southern Fried Chicken, Pizzas, Fresh Naan Kebabs, Seekh Kebab and Chicken Tikka. This was the first trial of the outdoor catering stall and we are looking forward to doing further outdoor events in the coming future.” John Saddiq “The performers were outstanding and added glamour to the event. We thank Birmingham City Council, Councillor Zafar Iqbal, Lord Mayor, The Events Organising team and the West Midland Police ensuring that the event was a success and that it ran smoothly and trouble free.” Bob Saddiq

Ebola in the UK ‘Valued’ nurse returns to UK for treatment of potentially deadly disease

A nurse from Britain, who contracted the deadly Ebola virus whilst working as an aid volunteer in Sierra Leone, has returned to England to be treated at a London hospital. The patient, 29-year-old William Pooley, had been volunteering in the country after local medics were afraid of the potential risk of infection. He is believed to have helped save the lives of dozens of people by helping to ensure a vital hospital near the centre of the outbreak did not close down. Upon returning to the UK, he was taken into an isolation unit at the Royal Free Hosptial, in Hampstead, where his condition is described as ‘not seriously unwell’. A spokesman for Sierra Leone's ministry of health, Yahya Tunis, yesterday said Mr Pooley had been working in Kenema in eastern Sierra Leone, one of the areas hardest hit by Ebola which has now been quarantined. “His colleagues are very sad over the development as he is considered as a valued member,” Tunis said, adding that he was involved in ‘surveillance, contact tracing and the

burial of Ebola victims’. A statement from Mr Pooley’s family was released shortly after his return to his home country, thanking those involved in bringing their son ‘home’. “We would like to express our thanks to all involved in bringing our son back to the UK,” the statement read. “We have been astounded by the speed and way which the various international and UK government agencies have worked together to get Will home. “Will is receiving excellent care at the Royal Free Hospital and we could not ask for him to be in a better place. “We would like to thank all our family and friends for their best wishes and ask everyone to remember those in other parts of the world suffering with Ebola who do not have access to the same health care facilities as Will.” To date, more than 1,400 people have died from the virus since its first fatality in March, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) saying it could take months to bring the epidemic under control.

11 YEARS

A mother in Scotland, who sparked a nationwide search for her son after reporting him ‘missing’ earlier this year, has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for the killing of the three-year-old. Rosdeep Adekoya killed and then attempted to hide the body of her youngest son, Mikaeel Kular, in January, dumping his body in a suitcase, behind a relative’s home. Little Mikaeel died as a result of constant beatings over a three day period at the family home in Edinburgh which resulted in the toddler suffering severe internal injuries. He was then driven in a duvet to Kirkaldy, Fife, where his body was dumped in a woodland area. Sentencing Adekoya, 34, on Monday 25th August, Judge Lord Glennie, said the actions of the mother had been ‘cruel and inexcusable’. “Mikaeel was by all accounts a healthy, happy little boy. By your actions, however unintended, you have not only robbed Mikaeel of his young life but left a gaping hole in the lives of all who loved him,” he said. “You are clearly an intelligent and articulate young woman. There is no history of violence by you towards any of your children. “That makes it all the more difficult to understand your actions. I do not suppose that you really understand why you did what you did.” Adekoya had told officers in January that her son had apparently got up in the middle of the night and let himself out of their home. Thousands of residents and members of the public searched for the child in the following days before the mother admitted to the killing of her son. She then took officers to his body and told them during an interview: “It was an accident and I panicked. I am going to go to the jail.” Adekoya had initially been charged with murder when she appeared at the high court in Edinburgh last month, yet pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. She will spend 11 years at the Cornton Vale prison, near Stirling.

A sprinkle of Bollywood dust for children’s education A sprinkle of Bollywood magic was brought to an event encouraging and celebrating children’s education in India. UNICEF’s Education Programme supports and strengthens the Indian government’s efforts to provide quality education by reducing social and economic disparities. Bollywood actress and UNICEF India Goodwill Ambassador Sharmila Tagore and actress and UNICEF Celebrity Advocate, Kareena Kapoor Khan, graced the evening held at The Ritz in London on Wednesday 20th August, for a dinner to support the organisation’s education work for children in India. Speaking at the event, Sharmila Tagore, who is celebrating ten years as an ambassador, said: “Over the last ten years, I’ve seen first-hand, the work UNICEF does to ensure that the rights of every child are realised. “Education is one such right. It is the passport to life; without it children are less healthy, less skilled, have fewer choices and less hope for their future. “Yet, sadly, access to education still remains a challenge, for millions of children in India.” Kareena Kapoor urged guests to pledge their support for the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund and spoke about her recent visit to Rajasthan. Kareena said she was inspired to see

an environment where children were full of joy when they interact with teachers, and where interactive and creative tools were available to them for happy learning. Anita Tiessen, UNICEF UK Deputy Executive Director, said: “Sadly quality education still remains a challenge in India, particularly for girls – where the dropout rate at primary level is 41 per cent. “This is often because of attitudes towards the value in girls having an education or schools not having adequate and safe sanitation facilities. “When girls drop out of school they become more vulnerable to child marriage, early and unsafe pregnancies, and it has a lasting impact on their future earning power.” GRACEFUL: Sharmila Tahore has been the UNICEF India Goodwill Ambassador for ten years

Afghans found in shipping containers Two charged after asylum seekers found in ‘freezing’ conditions Two lorry drivers have been charged with conspiring to facilitate illegal entry into the UK after 35 suspected stowaways, including one dead man, were found in a shipping container in Essex. Stephen McLaughlin and Timothy Murphy were charged by British Police on Saturday 23rd August after the group of people were found by staff at Tilbury Docks one week prior. The body of a 40-year-old man, named as Meet Singh Kappor, was found after staff had heard screaming and banging coming from a container which had been unloaded after arriving on a ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium. A total of 35 people were found inside, including 13 children aged between one and 12-years-old, alongside ten men and nine women. The oldest member of the group was 72, and all were believed to be Sikhs from Afghanistan. It is reported that the group had been in the freezing conditions for 18 hours before they were released with several needing hospital treatment for hypothermia and dehydration. Sikhs make up a tiny minority in Afghanistan's population of around 31 million people. Meanwhile, police are continuing investigations to find out how the

people came to be in the container and to establish the cause of Kapoor's death. Acting Det Ch Insp Martin Pasmore, of Essex Police, said: “This is a fast-moving investigation which has already involved a number of police forces and law enforcement agencies from across the United Kingdom and Europe. “I am very grateful to officers from the PSNI for their assistance this morning. We will continue to work closely with all of our policing colleagues as we pursue our investigation to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.” Currently, the group are all in the care of the Home Office and are seeking asylum in the UK.

KILLED: James Foley was beheaded by jihadists from the Islamic State in Syria after being taken hostage back in November 2012

BEHEADED: US journalist murdered by suspected British jihadist The shocking video of an American journalist being beheaded has prompted US President Barack Obama to vow that his country will do ‘what it must’ to protect its citizens. Journalist James Foley, who had been captured by Islamic State (IS) militants back in November 2012 was executed by a masked member of the IS with the video later uploaded onto social media. With his head shaven and dressed in an orange outfit similar to uniforms worn by prisoners at the U.S. detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, the 40-year-old is seen kneeling in the desert next to a man holding a knife and clad head to toe in black. “I call on my friends, family and loved ones to rise up against my real killers, the U.S. government, for what will happen to me is only a result of their complacency and criminality,” the kneeling man says. The man next to him, in a black mask, speaks with a British accent and says: “This is James Wright Foley, an American citizen, of your country. As a government, you have been at the forefront of

the aggression towards the Islamic State. “Today your military air force is attacking us daily in Iraq. Your strikes have caused casualties amongst Muslims. You are no longer fighting an insurgency. We are an Islamic army, and a state that has been accepted by a large number of Muslims worldwide.” Following his statement, he

and other held prisoners failed last year as the hostages were not present at the location which was targeted by US soldiers. His assailant is currently being identified through intelligent voice recognition software with a British accent leading many to believe he is a British Jihadist, something the foreign secretary has labelled as ‘horrifying’.

“It is horrifying to think that the perpetrator of this heinous act could have been brought up in Britain. beheads the kneeling man. At the end of the video, words on the side of the screen say, ‘Steven Joel Sotloff’, as another prisoner in an orange jumpsuit is shown on screen. “The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision,” the masked man says. An attempt to rescue Mr Foley

In his Sunday Times article, Philip Hammond said: “It is horrifying to think that the perpetrator of this heinous act could have been brought up in Britain. “It is an utter betrayal of our country, our values and everything the British people stand for.”

Terrifying ordeal sees field worker defeat big cat

International

Looking for the perfect honeymoon? or just a 'sweetheart getaway'

DANGER: There are currently around 20,000 leopards in India with some now venturing towards human habitations in search of food

Woman’s battle with leopard An elderly woman, from a village in Northern India, was forced to fight for her life as a leopard attacked whilst she worked away in the fields. 56-year-old Kamla Negi, from Koti Badna village in the state of Uttarakhand, managed to fight off the big cat with nothing more than a sickle and a small spade, according to an Indian Today report. The woman was forced to endure an hour battle before the animal fled and she was able to make her way back to town, where she was taken to hospital. Kamla suffered some severe injuries as she was grievously wounded in the process, suffering three fractures and several cuts, yet survived the ordeal. The leopard, which was seen fleeing from the spot, was later found dead near the village. Despite the terrifying ordeal, Kamla’s story is not a unique one with animal attacks in the country seemingly on the rise over

past months. Shrinking habitats have led many dangerous animals, such as leopards, to venture into villages where foods such as cattle are available. Besides Uttarakhand, instances of leopards straying into human habitations have been reported in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Assam and even the suburbs of cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Mumbai and Guwahati. Uttarakhand alone has reported around 200 cases of leopard attacks on humans annually. In July, a pregnant woman, a four-year-old child and an elderly man were all killed in separate leopard attacks in Tehri, Dehra Dun. The attacks led to the local authorities having to hire a poacher to kill the leopard. Unofficial estimates put the number of leopards in India at around 20,000 with at least 200 of them killed every year by poachers.

There will be no fight Leading Indian boxer Vijender Singh will be unable to defend his Asian Games middleweight title after a hand injury ruled him out of next month's event, the Olympic medallist said on Tuesday. Singh, whose bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics helped raise the profile of boxing in India, picked up the injury during the Commonwealth

Games final in Glasgow at the start of August. “It's very disappointing for an athlete. The hand is still not stable. So I have no option but to pull out,” the 28-year-old told Reuters, confirming his withdrawal. After his landmark success in Beijing, where he won India's first Olympic boxing medal, Singh became the world number one in the

middleweight category in 2009 and went on to win Asian Games gold in Guangzhou the following year. His silver in Glasgow, where he was beaten on points by England's Antony Fowler, was his third Commonwealth Games medal after he lost in the welterweight final eight years ago in Melbourne and picked up a middleweight bronze in Delhi in 2010.

Mini-Castro meet Castro

An eight-year-old Cuban boy who likes to dress up as Fidel Castro got to meet his idol after Cuba's 88year-old retired leader invited him and his family to his Havana home for a chat. “I felt a lot of emotion upon seeing Fidel,” Marlon Mendez told Reuters on Monday from his home near Havana. “The whole family hugged him. It was my dream to meet Fidel, and I did it. ... My mother was shaking.” Marlon and his family

went to visit Castro on 16th August, upon the invitation of the retired leader who is revered by some and detested by others for leading the Cuban revolution of 1959 and remaining in power for 49 years. The boy likes to dress in green fatigues, army boots and cap as Castro once did. Marlon wore the costume to his meeting with Castro, but without Castro's trademark beard and cigar.

Panic in the sky

An Australian pilot made an emergency landing after wrestling back the controls of his light aircraft from an 82year-old passenger who grabbed them midflight, the aircraft's charter company said. Police said the elderly man chartered the small four-seater Beechcraft Duchess plane on Monday for a business trip from the Sydney suburb of Bankstown to Cowra, a distance of about 186km, or 116 miles. But he began acting erratically midway

through the flight, moving to shut down the plane's engines and seizing the control stick, a spokesman for charter company Australia by Air told reporters. The 23-year-old pilot restrained the passenger and made a distress call before safely landing the plane in a field, police said. “The pilot displayed excellent airmanship and skill during the landing, and we thank him for his professionalism,” the company said in a statement.

More delays in Afghan elections

September deadline for votes in ‘democratic election’ RACE: The contest for power in Afghanistan’s drawn out elections is almost certain to see either Abdullah Abdullah or Ashraf Ghani take the seat as president of the country

More than four months have now passed since Afghanistan was supposed to have welcomed in its first president through a democratic transfer of power, yet it seems a resolve is just as far away as ever. The initial votes were cast on 5th April and a second round then followed up on 14th June, yet since then the debate over who won the election has remained at a stern deadlock. Rivals Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, as part of a U.S.-brokered deal, must form

a government of national unity and cooperate on an audit of all eight million votes that were cast to eliminate concerns over widespread electoral fraud. The inauguration had to be pushed back a second time since a June run-off vote because officials from both camps, along with the electoral body, doubted the target would be met. The new inauguration target of 2nd September, if it is met, would allow the next president to take power before a key NATO summit in

Wales starts two days later. The summit will determine how much aid Afghanistan will get after most foreign troops pull out at the end of the year. “The Independent Election Commission (IEC) is trying very hard to finish the process as soon as possible,” said the commission's spokesman, Noor Mohammad Noor. The bitter stand-off has dashed hopes for a smooth transition of power from President Hamid Karzai, who has run Afghanistan since U.S.-backed Afghan forces

toppled the Taliban in 2001. He is barred by the constitution from running again. Noor said 70 percent of votes have been inspected so far, a month into the U.N.supervised audit, but the most contentious ballots have yet to be scrutinised. “Prolonging of the presidential process has affected people's daily life, particularly in security, economy and governance,” Karzai's office said on Sunday. “This must end as soon as possible.”

‘No Entry’ 453 piercings are too much for Dubai security The world’s most pierced man may be one individual that some people would find interesting to look upon, yet that certainly isn’t the case for Dubai authorities. Rolf Buchholz officially holds the record for the most piercings in a human body, with 453, yet was denied access into Dubai earlier this week amid ‘security fears’. The 53-year-old German, who was on his way to appear at a nightclub in the city, was turned away at customs having passed through immigration problem-free. Buchholz told the BBC that airport security staff feared he had been practicing ‘black magic’ and was therefore denied entry into the country. He also complained that the airport staff had now lost his luggage and later vowed to never return to the Gulf State. On Twitter he wrote: “On

Funding boost for humanitarian workers

The UK is providing more than £1 million to improve the personal safety of humanitarian workers who put themselves at risk to help others, International Development Minister Desmond Swayne announced. The package of support includes funding for humanitarian worker safety in Iraq, extra training for staff operating in dangerous environments around the world and funding to help establish three new NGO staff safety hubs in Iraq, Libya and the Central African Republic. The announcement comes on World Humanitarian Day, designated by the UN in order to recognise the efforts and sacrifices of humanitarian workers and falling on the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Iraq. The extra support is part of the Department for International Development’s NGO safety and security

programme. It includes £150,000 for the European Interagency Security Forum (EISF) to help NGOs in hostile environments strengthen further their security arrangements through workshops and research; £594,000 is supporting five existing NGO personnel safety offices in Afghanistan, DRC, Kenya, Mali, and Syria and is helping create three new offices in Iraq, Libya and CAR. £275,000 is allocated for interactive online training on personal security and risk assessments for humanitarian workers. Designed to complement face-to-face training, it is aimed at staff working overseas who are unable to attend training courses due to security or travel restrictions. While the number of attacks on humanitarian workers is increasing around the globe, DFID is promoting personal safety and better danger awareness.

Life Imprisonments Group sentenced for murder of officer PROTEST: Thousands of Bahraini Shi’ites gather near the capital of Manama to protest against the current regime

14 men have been ordered to spend the rest of their lives in jail after being found guilty of the killing of a policeman in Bahrain last year. The group were convicted for premeditated murder and intent to use violence against members of the security forces, as attacks on authority personnel in the country continue to rise. Members of the group, upon their arrest in July, were also reportedly found guilty of possessing petrol bombs and explosives and taking part in an unauthorised demonstration near the capital Manama. State news agency, BNA, reported that the group had planned on committing violent acts during an anti-regime protest and the officer had been killed when a device, inside a barricade erected by protestors, exploded. Speaking on Wednesday a BNA spokesperson said: “One of them planted an explosive device and prepared it for detonation. “They and others participated in group

rioting in a public place with the purpose of committing crimes ... and they used violence to achieve that end ... and all of this was committed for terrorism purposes.” Attacks on security forces have been on the rise in the Gulf Arab country, which hosts the US Fifth Fleet, more than three years after authorities quelled Shi'ite Muslim-led protests against the Sunni-led government. Nevertheless, tens of Shi’ites continue to be handed long prison sentences for their involvement in similar protests against the Sunni Muslim Al-Khalifa dynasty that rules Bahrain. Bahraini Shi'ites, who make up the majority of the population, complain of political and economic marginalisation, an accusation the government denies. Since 2011, authorities have attempted to lower the crime level introducing the death penalty or life in jail for those found guilty in incidents where there were dead or wounded.

Some interesting literature

When two men, such as Yusuf Sarwar and Mohammed Ahmed, decide to travel to Syria with plans of becoming jihadists, you would not be surprised to see some kind of extreme literature with them. Well not exactly. What better way to show that these two men’s’ actions have nothing to do with the true teachings of the Islamic faith than by finding books entitled ‘Koran for Dummies’ and ‘Islam for Dummies’ within their luggage. Both men, who pleaded guilty to terrorism offences last month, fought in Syria for eight months alongside militants before returning home to Birmingham in January. Their bit of ‘light-reading’ for the trip beggars the question, how much do Islamic militants actually know about their own religion? Back in 2008, a classified briefing note on radicalisation, prepared by MI5's behavioural science unit, was leaked to the Guardian. It read: “Far from being religious zealots, a large number of those involved in terrorism do not practise their faith regularly. Many lack religious literacy and could... be regarded as religious novices.” Concluding in the newspaper that: “A well-established religious identity actually protects against violent radicalisation.”

READ: Yusuf Sarwar and Mohammed Ahmed both purchased a copy of Koran for Dummies before heading to Syria last May

Salique’s new track 'Yallah Azizi' merges Eastern and Arabic harmonies Salique displays his velvety vocals and versatility in the catchy new track. Experimenting with different sounds, music lovers can expect to hear a fantastic amalgamation of flavours - from Urdu to Arabic – all set to an infectious R&B rhythm. Not only is the track a sure-fire hit, but Salique will certainly catch the attention of his audience, not to mention the hearts of his fast growing female fan-base. The superb accompanying video to Yallah Azizi was shot on location in Marbella, Spain and will not

disappoint those looking for high budget, high quality production. Speaking on the release of ‘Yallah Azizi’, Salique says: “I was ten-years-old when I first realised my passion for music, so to be singing professionally 13 years later is a fantastic experience for me. “Growing up as a British Asian I have listened to and been inspired by artists from the East and West. “This has encouraged me to make music which combines the best of both worlds, which is what I believe I’ve maintained in

‘Yallah Azizi’. The track is a great mix of Urdu, English and Arabic vocals with a killer beat.” Salique’s popularity has been immediate since the positive reception of his first single and the singer has garnered much attention from his peers in the industry. Salique has just completed his debut album with Official Vee, releasing at the end of this year, on which ‘Yallah Azizi’ is featured. Yallah Azizi will be available for download on iTunes from 28th August.

UNPLUGGED TaZzZ’s ‘Teardrops’ continues to be the love ballad of the year

London-based rapper and producer TaZzZ Ullah has just released the beautifully orchestrated unplugged version to his highly acclaimed single ‘Teardrops’, featuring Rita Morar and Raxstar. ‘Teardrops’ (Unplugged) is timeless music in its purest form which is soothing to the soul, a musical symphony amid live strings and chords that pierces through the core of one’s heart. The track still continues to gain massive success all over the world and has become the love ballad of the year.

Asim Azhar dubbed Pakistani Justin Bieber

Hailed as one of Pakistan's brightest talents, the teen pop sensation Asim Azhar returns with his brand new single, the heartfelt 'Maahi Aaja'. The beautiful ballad is the latest release from Asim, dubbed as the 'Pakistani Justin Bieber', with his boyish charm and growing army of young female fans. He is gearing up for his first UK visit this month. Speaking about 'Maahi Aaja', Asim says: "I'm excited to release my new single. The last year has been incredible for me, especially in Pakistan where my home fans have been unbelievable. “The release of 'Maahi Aaja' is the next step of my journey. With three consecutive number one singles, he has dominated the Pakistani pop charts over the last 18 months, with his Facebook fan-base rapidly rising over 150,000. Last year Asim made headlines after introducing himself to the world with a brilliant Urdu cover of Ed Sheeran's debut smash 'The A Team', a YouTube hit which led to Ed Sheeran himself tweeting Asim with USA tour this month, his approval. followed by my first UK In 2014 the Asim Azhar performance at the London buzz has continued, with a Mela on 31st August. Accompanied by an epic video, exceptionally executed to match the emotions in a classical yet innovative way portraying a story of heartbreak and love that is lost. The compilation is the first single from TaZzZ’s forthcoming debut album. Talking to the Asian Express about ‘Teardrops’, TaZzZ said: “I just wanted to show a different side of me and releasing this first was an easy decision to make as it’s a very strong and meaningful record.” The chorus has been taken from a Bollywood track ‘Tujhe Bhula Diya’ from the movie ‘Anjaana Anjaani’. Ever since TaZzZ heard the original he’s always wanted to recreate it and give it a rendition of his own. TaZzZ explains: “When I made the production for

‘Teardrops’ I instantly had a vision for it. “Raxstar was an obvious choice, for me he is one of the best lyricists in our industry, he understands writing so well and has such a unique style of delivery. “Whilst we were having a vibe in my studio I told him what the concept of the track was and an hour later he penned his lyrics and totally nailed it. “Raxstar always delivers precisely, he is such a remarkable talent to work with professionally; besides music we are very close friends so there’s a very good understanding and relationship, plus we share the same vision in what we hope to achieve.” Talking about working for the first time with Rita Morar from Luton, the producer says that he

was mesmerized by her vocals and that she is ‘the soul’ of ‘Teardrops’ and elevated the song to a different level. Giving us an insight into his album, which has been five years in the making, it sounds like we can expect to be entertained with unique music teamed with smooth vocals, as TaZzZ has collaborated with artists in Pakistan. TaZzZ commented: “The album will release at the end of this year. “It’s taken me a long time to put it together simply because of the fact that I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my craft, and I don’t want to release an album just for the sake of releasing it. “I’ve worked extremely hard, I’ve put my heart and soul into it and I hope people get to feel that when they hear it.”

Empowering Priyanka Priyanka Chopra left the comforts of her luxurious Bollywood lifestyle to meet with rural women being supported by UNICEF’s adolescent work in India for eight years now. In India there are around 243 million adolescents who are facing rising youth unemployment. Life can be particularly hard for young women as they face the challenges of limited economic opportunities and access to training and employment, which reinforce broader issues of discrimination, early marriage, violence and poverty. During her visit in Chandrapur to mark International Youth Day, Priyanka – the UNICEF India Ambassador, met young women from the ‘Building Young Futures’ programme, locally known as ‘Deepshikha’, and saw how they are being empowered to help fulfill their potential. The aim is to unlock the potential of young people from disadvantaged communities. The young women receive support in developing skills they need to overcome the challenges they face to become strong, financially

How to achieve the best results from Waxing

One of the best ways to permanently remove hair is to opt for Laser Hair Removal where pulses of laser light destroy the hair follicle. However this can be a length & expensive process and in some cases it does not suit every individuals skin. For this reason, Waxing is one of the best ways of removing unwanted hair, and when done correctly can produce amazing results!

Waxing effectively pulls the hair out from the root, therefore results last longer than some other methods of hair removal such as shaving which simply break the hair off at the surface of the skin. Depending on the individual and the area of the body, waxing can last for up to 6 weeks. Waxing also removes the top layer of dead skin cells so it also exfoliates leaving the skin brighter and smoother. Also after a prolonged period of continuous waxing, hairs reduce, become thinner and for some people stop growing permanently. Follow these tips to make sure you get the best results!

independent women as well as agents of change in their communities. This includes learning how to save, building business plans, developing their own enterprises and learning how to network as well as building confidence, understanding girl’s rights and leadership skills. Priyanka met girls including Sadhana Chaudhari, who was discriminated against by her family and had to leave school early with limited skills. Sadhana,

now 23 years old, runs her own tailoring business, and is setting up a group sanitary napkin business with other girls from her village. She has become a leader in the programme, or ‘Prerika’ as they are locally known, and is determined to pass what she has learnt onto other women in the community. Priyanka Chopra said: “Girls have the ability to transform their own lives, develop their own enterprises and help grow India’s economy. The Building Young

Futures programme is giving them the vital skills and support they need to make this happen. “I met girls who have experienced incredible hardship in their lives and this has given them a voice and confidence, or ‘daring’ as they call it. “I strongly advocate that parents, care-givers and educators must give the girls more and more opportunities to grow in their lives.” In India, by 2015, the ‘Building Young Futures’ will have

empowered around 100,000 girls and young women directly and another 200,000 girls through the programme. Ram Gopal, Chief Operating Officer, Barclays India, said: “We are able to empower these young women in India, teach them that they are equal to men, and help provide them with the skills they need to become economically empowered individuals. “The plan is to support five million young people in becoming the next generation of achievers.”

1) Make sure the treatment is carried out by a professional & qualified therapist as using the wrong techniques & products can cause hairs to break and produce less effective results which are no better than shaving. Hair can grow back after a couple of days due to using the wrong waxing technique!

2) Choose a wax that is suited to your skin type as this reduces irritation and protects your skin from having a negative reaction to waxing. At Prity- Hair, Beauty & Spa you can choose from four different types of wax specifically designed to work with different skin types to achieve optimum results! 3) Invest time into exfoliating your skin before & after waxing as this will remove dead skin cells making it easier for the wax to stick to the hairs and pull them out without breakage. This produces a smoother, softer finish and helps the results to last longer. 4) Keep your skin moisturised and hydrated as this reduces the appearance of ingrown hairs & red bumps on your skin in between waxing sessions.

5) Make sure to have regular waxing sessions to keep your skin looking smooth and hair free! As a rule of thumb:

- Eyebrows, Lip & Chin; every 2-3 weeks - Legs, arms & bikini; every 3-6 weeks

Choose from: Lemon Wax- Oily Skin, Strawberry Wax for Dry Skin, Rose Wax for Normal Skin & Blueberry for Sensitive Skin. Now available at either of our Bradford Branches!

Jaguar XE SVR

GROWLING: Jaguar XE SVR will have 490hp with its 5.0-litre Supercharged V8

set to taunt BMW M3 By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

The high-performance variant of the upcoming Jaguar is set to rival the BMW M3 and MercedesBenz C63 AMG. Word on the grapevine is that the 5.0-litre V8 beast is to be

dubbed the Jaguar XE SVR, and will reportedly arrive by early 2016, about one year after the regular model goes on sale. Under the hood, it will unsurprisingly use Jaguar’s existing 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, which will turn the powertrain to deliver a total of 489 hp.

The Jaguar XE SVR is set to sprint to 100 km/h in an impressive four seconds as well as an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Jaguar however, recently confirmed that the XE will be capable of hitting over 300 km/h (186 mph) so this will probably come by unlocking the limiter at the customer’s request.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated with the potent engine and the vehicle will adopt larger performance brakes as well as revised and stiffer suspension and an electronically controlled limited slip differential. The bodykit will come adapted to couple with the aggressive with high-performance variants of the

Jaguar XE. This bodykit will likely include new bumpers, side skirts, a redesigned front grille, quad tailpipes and a rear diffuser. Testing for the XE SVR has been prognosticated at the Nurburgring - so we should see prototypes hitting the track early next year.

New technology to power the family car of 2020

The family cars of the next decade will be some of the most economical mainstream cars ever built, thanks to a raft of cutting-edge technologies which are already being worked on. Top five new technologies will propel the average family car to achieve CO2 output figures of well under 90g/km and fuel efficiency levels of more than 300mpg. The average family car achieved just 132g/km of CO2 in 2012 and is expected to manage 130g/km by

NEW LIFE CYCLE: Third-generation Audi TT saves on greenhouse gases

next year. The European Union has set stringent regulations that require all car makers to meet a rigorous set of average CO2 emissions standards across their entire fleet of vehicles. These come into force in 2020. Flywheels, electric turbochargers and intelligent aerodynamics will shape the way the mid-market saloons and hatchbacks will be built with the specific aim of meeting those standards.

Prediction of top five new fuel-saving technologies Flywheels

A British-designed flywheel system, which is used to drive the rear wheels of a front-wheel-drive car, is currently in testing. Flywheels can store waste energy and then release it, much like an electric motor and battery. Flywheel systems are also about a quarter of the cost of a hybrid set-up, far less complex and much lighter.

Variable Compression Ratio Engines

Earlier this year, it was announced that manufacturers were developing engines with variable compression ratios. Being able to vary an engine’s compression ratio depending on the demands being placed on it will lead to significant advances in efficiency.

Coasting

Coasting technology is something that is certain to be used on future models and will most likely be rolled out in three stages. The first stage, coasting at speed - is already a feature on cars fitted with dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. The next version will function when a car is travelling below 4mph. The ultimate version will allow transmission decoupling and engine shut-down when cruising at speed, travelling downhill or approaching traffic lights that are about to turn red.

Electric Turbochargers

Manufacturers have already begun to preview their own versions of electric turbocharging by using a powerful fan in the engine’s induction system. This fan blows air through the turbo when the engine is decelerating in order to spin the turbo fan up to speed so that full boost is available as soon as the driver gets back on the accelerator.

Enclosed Wheel Wells

August 2014 - 3rd Edition

It is believed that wheel wells might yield big reductions in drag. The step would involve enclosing the wheel housing so airflow doesn’t get trapped as it travels under the car. This would mean fitting an undertray that extends beneath the front wishbones. This flexible ‘skirt’, which could be attached to the wheel arch liners and the lower wishbones, creates a seal that moves with the suspension.

By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Audi has made significant gains in reducing the whole-life impact on the environment of its latest high-tech sports car. Compared with its predecessor, the new Audi TT scores high with an increase in power output of up to 14 per cent and a simultaneous decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of 11 per cent. As the premium vehicle manufacturer states in its new life cycle assessment of the thirdgeneration TT, this means that each car in the series saves around 5.5 tonnes of greenhouse gases over its entire life cycle. This includes not just carbon dioxide, but other substances such

83

as methane, nitrous oxide and halogenated organic emissions. A host of technologies have contributed towards the positive life cycle assessment of the Audi TT, including lightweight construction. An intelligent combination of materials have been used by Audi engineers, who have now, for the second time in a row, succeeded in reducing the car’s unladen weight. The first model change in 2006 saw weight savings of up to 90 kilograms achieved. With the front-wheel driven 2.0 TFSI engine variant of the new TT now weighing in at just 1,230 kilograms, this means that the car is once again around 50 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. Weight reduction and intelligent lightweight construction measures also have an impact on the vehicle manufacturing process. Here they’ve reduced greenhouse gas emissions by around nine per cent, or 800 kilograms.

New TT benefits from emissions reduction of 11 % compared with predecessor. Power increase of up to 14 per cent Customer benefits from the very first mile

MPG marathon for electric vehicles

Electric vehicles will feature strongly in this year’s MPG Marathon for the first time – but the drivers will have to plan their recharging points carefully if they want to finish first in their class. Pure electric vehicles are taking part alongside range extenders and plug-in hybrids for the first time in the famous eco-driving extravaganza Electricity will be measured at 13p per kilowatt hour, while any carbon fuel that the petrol or diesel hybrid vehicles consume will also be taken into account. This year’s MPG Marathon is set out to demonstrate that a combination of fuelefficient cars, advanced fuels, route planning technology and eco-driving skills can be employed to successfully manage the rising cost of fuel. The three new vehicle classes are joining the more familiar diesel and petrol-engined cars and vans that traditionally take part in the event, which this year is being held in the picturesque Cotswolds and the rugged Brecon Beacons on 8th and 9th October. Several electric vehicle entries have already been received. They will have to make the best possible use of the recharging network housed at service stations on the 360-mile route, and will be judged on how much power they consume over the course. In previous years, the UK’s most prestigious lean-driving challenge has attracted celebrities, motoring journalists, academics and senior figures from the automotive industry, all striving to see if they can complete the chosen route using as little fuel as possible. The bar is set very high as last year’s event was won by Nick Chapman and Rosemary Homer from Leicestershire County Council who achieved an amazing average of 88.69 mpg over the total route of 339.3 miles. Driving a Ford Fiesta ECOnetic 1.6 dieselengined Titanium model, they out-performed the field of 23 other vehicles with a dazzling array of lean-driving skills. The pair have already confirmed that they will be attempting to defend their crown again this year.

racer McLaren GT has announced that the wraps are set to come off the track-only 650S Sprint at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. The stripped-out racer will make its global debut alongside a number of other models from McLaren Automotive including the McLaren P1 GTR. Based on the recently launched McLaren 650S Coupe, the track-focused 650S Sprint is fitted with developments to the Brake Steer system, even more refined active aerodynamics and a race set-up for the ProActive Chassis Control (PCC). As with the 650S, the aerodynamically optimised design of the 650S Sprint offers a 3.8-litre twin-turbo M838T engine. In the 650S Sprint, the proven powerplant is retained from the 650S roadcar, with a unique engine and transmission calibration to further enhance on-track drivability and driver engagement. The cabin is fully track-focused and stripped out to minimise weight, but with no compromise to driver safety or comfort. A lightweight carbon fibre racing seat, with full six-point harness, offers an optimised driving position, while an airconditioning system is retained adding comfort. An integrated fire extinguisher system is also installed. McLaren GT recently announced the 650S GT3 race-car, which will be seen on the grid from next season, and the 650S Sprint shares a number of design features with its bigger brother. The 650S Sprint has a lower ride height with recalibrated adaptive damping for revised spring rates, and sits on 19-inch centre-locking racing wheels, fitted with Pirelli slick or wet tyres, while an onboard

air jacking system enables quick tyre changes. Stopping power is also enhanced and provided by a race-prepared braking system developed for the 650S Sprint. This system allows for later braking into

corners, but also improved brake feel and greater cornering speeds. The 650S Sprint will be priced at £198,000, and available from all official McLaren retailers worldwide or direct from McLaren GT.

More than 1,000 people gathered at the Saville Town playing fields earlier this month as the second annual ‘Lets Unite’ football fun day was held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. With a children’s tournament kicking off proceedings in the morning, it was then up to the over-40’s to steal the show in the afternoon with a whole range of talent on show. Teams made up of imams, priests, and West Yorkshire police were just some of those who battled it out for the final trophy, whilst local television celebrity, Jonny Mitchell, star of the Educating Yorkshire television series, led his team out on the day. In the end, it was local side, Overthorpe FC, who eventually beat off nine other teams to clinch the title. Organised by Kumon Y’all, the day looked to bring Dewsbury’s diverse communities together and Farook Yunus, who runs the group, said he was delighted to see the objective reached. “It was an absolutely brilliant day from the start at 9am for the kids, to the final in the over 40’s competition,” Mr Yunus

said. “This day was arranged to bring the community together and the response from local residents, teams and businesses was fantastic. “The diversity was there for all to see and it shows how powerful an event like this can be in helping to break down barriers in society.” Last year, the first Let’s Unite Fun Day was held with the headlining match seeing a team of priests taking on an Imam XI. Mr Yunus said he wanted to include even more people in this year’s event and that is why the tournament concept was brought in to allow even more members of the community to get involved. Superintendent Tim Kingsman, of West Yorkshire Police added his praise for the project after leading out his team on the day. “Football draws people together, and most importantly it provides an opportunity to break down barriers and increase communication across communities in Dewsbury and further afield. “We will, age and injury permitting, support future events.” Throughout the day, around £1,000 was also raised for MacMillan Cancer Support through team’s entry fees, stalls and activities.

British boxing has had some great fighters like Lennox Lewis who became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and more recently David Price who is known as the future British prospect of heavyweight boxing. However behind the Lewis and Price successes have been a tough and world recognised boxing promoter called Frank Moloney. Moloney helped guide the careers of many boxers who went onto reach their full potential in the boxing ring and he assured that the boxers were brought along at the right pace and at the right price. The biggest boxing failure for any potential boxer is not what happens inside the ring but that what happens outside. A boxing promoter is in charge of setting up and paying for everything involved in a boxing match and making sure all legal requirements are met at every step along the way. The difference between skilled boxers you've never heard of and a skilled boxer named Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson is often a really good promoter. Frank Moloney was that good promoter so it comes as a shock when he told the world that he no longer wants to be a man and was undergoing medical transgender treatment to become Kellie Moloney. The boxing world that thrives on ego and represents itself to have a somewhat macho image has welcomed Kellie Moloney with mixed feelings and there are those who have accepted the transformation and some that have criticised the move and called it a

publicity stunt. Amongst those people that have accepted Kellie Moloney is Frank Moloney’s wife and two children who have supported him all along. However it has been hard to accept for some Frank Moloney friends and family and amongst them is his brother Eugene Maloney who has recently commented: “I was shocked, I began shaking. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I went down to buy my Sunday newspaper and there it was, right in front of me – I saw my brother is now living as a woman. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. I thought it was a joke – I thought Jeremy Beadle was going to jump out in front of me, laughing.” Since the Kellie transformation it has recently been reported that she is ready to return to her previous male gender and identity of tough-talking boxing promoter Frank Maloney. Kellie, 61, made her tearful confession after admitting she was struggling to cope with life as a female. Kellie Moloney has vowed to continue with boxing promotion as a career but whether she will continue her life as Frank or Kellie Moloney remains to be seen.

Mahela’s Test career ends with victory over Pakistan VICTORIOUS: Mahela Jayawardene ends his Test career with Sri Lankan pride

As Sri Lanka’s spinner Rangana Herath took his tally to 14 wickets in the match Mahela Jayawardene's 17year Test career ended with a series victory over Pakistan. Herath, who plundered nine wickets in the first innings, claimed five for 57 as the Sri Lankans rolled Pakistan over for just 165 to secure a 105-run victory and hand Jayawardene the perfect closure on his career. Batsman Jayawardene, was carried around the field in Colombo by his team-mates in front of Sri Lanka president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, after the conclusion of a 2-0 series win. Speaking at the post-match presentation, 37-year-old Jayawardene, who will continue to play one-day international cricket until after next year's World Cup, said: "I don't know what to say, but I promise I won't cry.

"I love you all. Thank you so much for the support all these years. I still have a little bit left and I promise I'll give it my all for the World Cup. "Thanks also to my teammates. It's been great to play for Sri Lanka for so many years. I have always worn this cap with pride and passion." Pakistan resumed their second innings on the final day at 127 for seven chasing an improbable 271 for victory and with number 11 Junaid Khan unable to bat because of injury. In the event, even the threat of a rain delay could not hold up Sri Lanka, who took 40 minutes to get the ball rolling when Sarfraz Ahmed was caught sweeping Chanaka Welegedara to deep square leg to end his 29-run partnership with Wahab Riaz. Wahab was the last man to go as Herath extended his match haul to a remarkable 14 for 184.

‘I want Khan’ Brook clinches world title and now has eyes on King Khan

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The verdict had barely finished coming out of the ring announcer’s mouth before the inevitable showdown was mentioned - Kell Brook and Amir Khan.

The prior had just clinched his first World Championship after a majority decision over Shawn Porter in California, whilst the latter is yet to have an opponent lined up after winning a title of his own in May. Only one outcome would surely appease the bloodthirsty boxing fans around the country and that would

be seeing these two welterweight giants face off in a Wembley showdown. Brook’s IBF title win on Sunday night was a long awaited victory, having been forced to wait 18 months before finally getting his shot at the gold. In a tough contest against the American, the Sheffield boxer just about scraped the contest, being scored 114-114, 117-111, and 116112. Both fighters suffered accidental cuts above their eyes after two separate clashes of heads yet it didn’t seem to hamper the performance of either man. Brook was cut in the second round yet came back strongly in the third with a positive performance, showing no signs of being affected by the small cut. Three rounds later and it was Porter this time who was opened up and it seemed to affect the 26-yearold going in to the second half of the fight.

The final rounds were edged by Brook as he began to take up a more aggressive approach against the home-boxer who was forced to surrender his unbeaten record since turning professional. As for Brook, his own impressive streak now stretches to 33-0 and speaking after the fight, he said he was thrilled to have picked up the IBF Welterweight title. “I knew I was born to do this,” Brook said. “I’ve come over here to his backyard from little England and I’m the champ.” On a potential fight with Khan, he added: “The British public want it. He’ll probably say I need to win another title for the fight. “I know he doesn’t like me. The fact is, he is getting it. I’m the champ of the world.” Despite Brook’s scepticism, Khan seemed confident of arranging such a match-up in the future if the timing was right. “If the fight can happen, let’s make it happen,” Khan told BBC

Radio Five Live. “I’m up for it. I think I’d like that in somewhere like Wembley Stadium. “We can fill that out, that would be a quick sell. It’s the fight that the UK fans want to see and have been talking about for such a long time.” If such an encounter were to be arranged, there, of course, would only be one boxer who the victor would have his eyes on - Floyd Mayweather. The number one ranked welterweight boxer in the world already has some history with Khan, after the pair’s on-off bout was seemingly cancelled at the 11th hour last year. The Bolton boxer has never really forgiven Mayweather for his decision to fight Saul Alvarez instead of him and is sure to be eager to earn a second shot at the world’s best. As for Brook, a win over Khan, should the fight take place, would surely set up the 28-year-old with a dream opportunity at going toe-totoe with the one they call ‘Money’.

also among the co-owners of different franchises in the ISL, which Chopra hopes will help the league mirror, the success of the Cricket IPL. British Football Agent Baljit Rihal, who worked closely with Chopra’s agency said: “The interest from India has been phenomenal. Michael is well known amongst Indian football fans. “He was the first player of Indian heritage to play and indeed score in the English Premier League. “Our hope is that he will act as a positive footballing role model for aspiring Indian youngsters as well as those Asians in the UK. Our teams will be working closely with Michael to make a positive holistic contribution to the game in India.” Chopra concludes: “I'm absolutely delighted to have been picked by Kerala Blasters. “The fact that it's owned by one of the greatest sportsman in the world, Sachin Tendulkar, is tremendous. “I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates, the fans and am ecstatic to have David James as the head coach.” OPPORTUNITY: Ex-Newcastle striker Michael Chopra has been signed to India’s Kerala Blasters, owned by Sachin Tendulkar

Mexican Sergio Perez says he expects to stay at the Force India Formula One team next season with an extension likely to be agreed in a matter of weeks. “Nothing is confirmed yet but we should be, in the next couple of weeks, sorted for next year,” the former Sauber and McLaren driver told reporters at the Belgian Grand Prix on Thursday. “On my side it's a bit early to confirm anything but I expect things are going to move on very quickly,” he added. Mexico is returning to the grand prix calendar next season after a 23year absence and Perez is the country's leading driver, with a third place finish in Bahrain this year. Perez, who also brings sponsorship to Force India, is currently 11th but 40 points behind his German team mate Nico Hulkenberg. Team principal Vijay Mallya said last month that he was happy with his drivers, had options on both and saw no need to replace either for 2015. However Perez was clearly reluctant to take anything for granted after last year's experience
