The 14th annual Bradford Mela, Peel Park is the largest and most popular multicultural festival in the UK. Part of Bradford Festival – the Mela runs on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June from 12 noon to 9pm and entry is free. The Mela originates from the Indian Sub-continent and is a celebration of art, music, craft and community. Its aim is to educate and enjoy a mixture of Asian cultures and traditions. Melas in the UK in particular, are about bringing people together from many different cultures to celebrate the breadth and depth of the UK’s cultural diversity. The festival holds an a dazzling display of international and local talent including musicians, dancers and artists. It’s a bazaar containing an array of intriguing crafts, lavish jewellery, fashion textiles and food tents with the scent of the East. Activities for children are available as well as hands-on workshops and sports for a good family day out. Due to its growth in popularity, attracting over 120,000 visitors every year, the Bradford Mela is now internationally renowned worldwide. In 2004 festival-goers travelled from across the country creating record breaking attendance figures to make the event the most prestigious Mela in Britain. Mela is one of the main events involved in the Bradford festival and this year runs from the 17th June to 3rd July.

The Mela Festival is the brainchild of Bradford City Council, Bradford Festival and Oriental Arts. This collaboration aimed to create an Asian outdoor event, which could bring multi cultures together to create a community. The Bradford Mela Festival originally started in 1988, held at Shearbridge Road playing field, behind the University of Bradford. This humble venue held a capacity of 10,000 visitors. The following year the festival moved to Manningham Park, due to the increase in popularity, the event attracted over 50,000 visitors. Since its beginnings the festival has grown so dramatically that moving the venue a third time was necessary to accommodate all the guests. Now situated at Peel Park, Mela attracted over 120,000 visitors last year and is set be just as popular this year. Bradford’s Mela festival is the largest in England and has influenced the opening of festivals in Manchester, Edinburgh, and London. Mr Champak Kumar, Oriental Arts Artistic Director and co-organiser of the Mela is proud of the lead Bradford has taken in the festival popularity and states: ‘It’s the jewel in the Mela crown’. The festival has extended its welcome to a variety of cultures including Afro Caribbean and Eastern European. Its aim is to create social inclusion among the communities. Mela aspires to preserve the culture of the Asian communities, educating and creating awareness to the non-Asian community and truly reflect multi-culturalism. The Mela festival has improved year by year, creating entertainment and awareness for local talent and up coming artists. So what’s the future for the festival? Bradford Mela has been a pioneer involved in the organising the Mela European Network Group, which will bring together all Mela festivals over Europe. The group aims to aid other festivals with their organisation and marketing in order to improve the festival experience. Planning is the most important factor with the festival organisation and

Bradford Mela aims to share its secrets to success with festivals the world over including Oslo, Norway. A book of the Mela festival aimed to be published in the future, studying the history, background and culture of a festival that had such modest beginnings. Its purpose is to further educate and create and awareness whilst also sharing the Mela experience. The Bradford Mela Festival is now in its 17th year, growing rapidly with popularity, showing no signs of slowing down. Its history proves that Bradford is leading the way and has been a significant part of the growth of the Mela. The Mela actively seeks support from the business community, in the form of sponsors, to improve the infrastructure and the artistic programming, and to attract more international artists to come and play on stage. They strive to generally make the event bigger and better whilst helping a range of diverse communities. Without the support of the business community the Mela could not do the developmental work they want to, and hope in future to attract even more sponsors from local businesses, who will make a huge marketing and publicity impact in reaching up to130,000 people. Partnership and networking are the key words. A business or organisation which has interests to come on board should do so, to help improve the Mela, and to benefit the whole community.

Festival performers Dalvinder Singh

Faakhir Pakistan’s pop sensation Faakhir is a real treat for the Mela crowd. Faakhir’s name is synonymous with mesmerizing melodies, a soulful voice and harmonies that set the heart on fire. In less then 10 years Faakhir has grown into an artist par excellence with a massive following of fans. His live performances are filled with energy and charged with unmistakable enthusiasm whilst his charismatic voice compliments all the magic that unfolds on stage. The brain behind the supergroup Awaz, Faakhir is one of the most talented lyricists, composers and producers in the world. He has performed for huge crowds in Europe, the US and the Middle East, and now his is bringing his elegant, creative music to Bradford.

Asian pop sensation Dalvinder Singh, fresh from his victory in Asian Pop Awards where he won the award for best newcomer, will be one of the highlights of the Mela. He performs traditional music with a touch of R and B. Riding high from the success of his new album ‘The Survivor’, the 22 year old from Birmingham promises to provide a thrilling selection of his old and new hits – including his smash hit “Nachda Panjabi”. Whatever the weather on the day, Dalvinder himself is sure to be having a great time, “My life revolves around music, singing and performing. I love it,” he says. Saturday, Mela Stage, 3.35pm

Saturday, Mela Stage, 6.05pm

Talvin Singh Trio As Saturday evening comes to an end and the weather cools down, the Talvin Singh Trio will take to the stage to hot things up. Winner of the 1999 Mercury Music prize for his album OK, tabla player, producer and composer Singh rose to prominence in the late nineties when he stormed London’s clubland with his unique fusion of Bhangra and Drum and Bass. The success of his club night Anokha led to him working with artists like Bjork, Sun Ra and Massive Attack. Now one of the biggest names in Asian music, Singh is also the innovator behind the first digital tabla and is widely regarded as the pioneer of Britain’s Anglo-Indian dance scene. Saturday, Mela Stage, 7.25pm

Najma Akhtar International star Najma Akhtar will be performing on the Mela stage, bringing her worldrenowned fusion music to the people of Bradford. Winning the 1984 Asian song contest launched Najma’s musical career, and since then she has been wowing audiences around the world with her beautiful ghazals. Her music covers several genres from Qawwalis, Kafi music, Punjabi music and Indian pop. She has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Apache Indian and the Sabri brothers, and she is sure to be a hit with the music loving Mela crowd.

Saturday, Mela Stage, 4.45pm

Najam Sheraz The sporting world’s loss is the music world’s gain. Najam Sheraz used to play professional cricket with Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed before he joined a band with his elder brothers. After huge success in Pakistan with his second band ‘Wet Metal’, Najam went solo in 1993 and his first album sold in its millions. Renowned for his soulful Hamd ‘Yeh moamla koi aur hai”, Najam’s energy, dedication and passion are reflected in his music. His amazing voice sounds fantastic in whatever genre he sings, be it classical alaap, rock, pop or jazz. Constantly experimenting and progressing musically, Najam has had several of his videos banned in his home country of Pakistan. Last year Najam toured the US where he played to huge crowds of up to 40,000 people –and there should be just as many people listening to him at the Mela. Sunday, Mela Stage, 5.35pm

Banco De Gaia Banco De Gaia, known to his mum as Toby Marks, is a big name in the world of ambient trance and dance music. He has released several albums and has performed all over the world, treating audiences to his eclectic brand of electronica. He was inspired to make electronic music by the acid house explosion of the late 80’s, but took a different spin on the genre by infusing eastern and Arabic music with his beats. Banco De Gaia has played at Glastonbury several times to great acclaim, and now he is bringing his off the wall but totally unique sound to the Bradford Mela. Sunday, Global Marquee, 6.00pm

Juggy D Not only is Juggy D one of the best up and coming Punjabi singers in the UK, he is also one of the most in demand producers. A relative newcomer to the music scene, Juggy has already worked on tracks for Britney Spears, Ricky Martin and Craig David. The Londonborn Juggy teamed up with Rishi Rich in 2002 and has gone from strength to strength since then. As well as performing and producing, Juggy also co-presents the Rishi Rich Project Radio show on Kiss FM. He is probably best known for his tracks ‘Nahin Jeena’ and “Dance with You”, both of which are sure to get a live airing when he plays at the Mela. His live act will also feature performances from Veronica and the Mentor Collective.

DCS DCS will be onstage at the Mela showcasing their stomping collection of Bhangra tunes. The award-winning band have blown away crowds around the world, and they have played numerous dates in Bradford, building up a strong local following. DCS cater for all generations and have produced albums in Hindi, Punjabi and English that have gained world recognition and international airplay. Probably the best live Bhangra band in the world, DCS believe that their music represents the identity of the British Asian, and they are proud to fly that flag wherever they play around the world. DCS are sure to get the dancefloor rocking with a potent cocktail of powerful beats and captivating lyrics.

Sunday, Mela Stage, 6.25pm

Sunday, Mela Stage, 2.45pm

RDB RDB (Rhythm, Dhol and Bass) have already established themselves as a household name in the UK and on the International Bhangra scene. They are perhaps one of the most talented production and entertainment groups of the century. RDB are a group of three brothers from Leeds and Bradford who over the past few years have not only been performing in front of thousands of people in the UK’s top clubs, Melas and parties, but also on the worldwide DJ circuit. They have played their blend of Bhangra, House, 2 Step, Hindi, RnB, Hiphop, Ragga and Reggae music, in every corner of the world. Since July 2001, RDB have released a staggering twelve chart topping albums, and they are sure to be one of the biggest draws at the Mela.

The Mighty Zulu Nation

Often dubbed ‘the young Ladysmith’, The Mighty Zulu Nation are the new youth-voice of post-apartheid South Africa, highlighting the pleasure as well as the pain many still endure. They have captivated audiences from Belgrade to Sweden and Bristol to Belgium for the past two years, with both their solo and collaborative efforts. Education plays a big role in the concept of the band and outside of live performances, MZN spend the majority of their time touring schools and introducing Zulu culture to the youngsters via dance, song and folklore. Their powerfully stunning harmonies and melodies are complimented by a whirl of classical strings and Eastern flavourings comprising of tablas, dhols and harmonium. Mighty Zulu Nation are an unprecedented fusion of Zulu folklore and inspiring experimentation. Sunday, Global Marquee, 4.35pm

Sunday, Global Marquee, 7.40pm

State of Bengal

Trickbaby Trickbaby made their name following the massive explosion of their tune ‘Indi Yam’ in the late 90’s. The hugely entertaining five-piece feature roaring guitars and frantic percussion amongst their lively tunes. After being signed by record label BMG in 1996 on a massive five album deal, Trickbaby then spent the next four years recording an album and then falling out with their record label. They are now signed to a new label and are much happier, having built their own studio and recorded a new album. Lead singer Saira says the “confusion and chaos of the music makes our sound indefinable.” Following a massively successful tour round India, Trickbaby are now ready to rock Bradford.

Sunday, Mela Stage, 1.45pm

State of Bengal (aka Sam Zaman) is a leading DJ and producer in the Asian club scene, and Paban Das Baul is a singer from Bengal’s mystical sect of wandering minstrels, the Bauls. Their collaboration began in Zaman’s home studio in East London in December 2002 and continued to grow at Paban’s Paris home. During their sessions Zaman began working around Paban’s strong, timeless melodies and haunting lyrics, building up each song organically. Often Zaman’s syncopated beats were unfamiliar to Paban, and essentially they had to learn each other’s music. Their music combines breakbeats, dub basslines, smoky vocals and hypnotic rhythms to create relaxed, vibrant and uplifting modern soundscapes. Sunday, Global Marquee, 3.35pm

Damien Dempsey Dublin’s Damien Dempsey is a rising star in the music world. During his career he has supported the likes of Bob Dylan, Sinead O’Connor and Morrissey. His third album ‘Shots’ has received rave reviews from the music press and his recent national headlining tours have gained him a growing following. In his native Ireland he has had number one albums and achieved double platinum sales, and he is hoping to become the latest Irish singer songwriter to achieve international success. His acoustic based music is emotional, hard hitting and engaging, and his performance at the Mela gives the people of Bradford a unique chance to see a star in the making. Good sport

HARD TACKLE: Men having fun Can you bowl as fast as Shoaib Akhtar? Want to hit the boundary like Michael Vaughan? Tackle like Robbie Paul or kick like Johnny Wilkinson? Sports Arena will give you the chance to try out some of the most popular sports activities like the national stars. Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Rugby Football Union, Rugby Football League, English Cricket Board and Cricket Factory are some of the organisations who will provide coaching and demonstrations for everyone of all ages and abilities. If you want to know what its like to face a 90-mileper-hour ball, or want to test the speed of your own deliveries, then come and visit the ECB’s Cricket Roadshow, sponsored by Vodafone and supported by Channel 4. The ECB Cricket Roadshow, comprising a trailer unit and outdoors activity facility, offers both an interactive and visual entertainment experience intended to excite the senses of cricket fans and noncricket fans alike.

The trailer unit houses a high tech mini-cinema – where visitors are treated to a five minute high-tech audio-visual cricket experience, depicting the fast and furious nature of the game, designed to showcase the very best of the country’s summer sport. Outside the trailer, meanwhile, two cricket nets are erected to test the skills of participants. Young and old will be able to check their bowling speeds as well as face high pace bowling, in order to experience the feeling of playing at the highest level. “The Cricket Roadshow is designed to excite the senses,” explained ECB Marketing Manager, Tom Harrison. “The audio-visual experience will highlight the passion and action in cricket, while the skills tests will give an opportunity for all ages to emulate their cricketing heroes and hone their skills.” The three Cricket Roadshow units are joined this summer by the Big Bats on tour as part of England’s Big Summer.

Viva la village After pulling in the crowds in their thousands in 2004 the Bradford Vision Tent, dubbed The Village, has returned for another year. It features an enormous marquee filled with The Village’s five sections - the Live Zone, Work Zone, Learn Zone, Play Zone and Future Zone featuring an animated video showing how Bradford could look in 2020. The idea behind the vision is that Bradford city is made up of a series of villages and the tent is constructed to reflect that A very popular event with children and their families, it gives the opportunity to get involved with an range of activities such as henna painting, an inflatable climbing wall, healthy living projects and mosaic making. Sadie Binns, Communications Assistant for Bradford Vision, stated: “interaction is what gives the village its buzz.” The tent aims to make education fun and create an awareness for the surrounding communities. The tent provides community organisations the opportunity to show the public the extent of activities and support they provide. The tent also offers a under cover ‘chill out’ zone to promote relaxation from the hustle and bustle of the festival.

Stages The Mela Stage The Mela Stage is the main stage at the Mela. During the weekend some of the biggest names in Asian music will be performing beneath its domed

roof, including Talvin Singh, Najma Akhtar and Faakhir. The massive structure and its huge sound system will stage performances for tens of thousands of people over the weekend – so check out our programme of events to make sure you don’t miss your favourite acts. Global Marquee The Marquee is the second biggest venue at the Mela. The Global Marquee stage offers a more diverse spectrum of performers than the Mela stage. Now a staple at the Mela, it offers the crowd a chance to broaden their musical horizons. From Zulu Music to Folk songs, from reggae to trance music, you’ll find it all on at the Global Marquee Stage.

20,000’s A CROWD: The view from the Mela Stage

The Home Stage The Home stage is the smallest stage at the Mela, but it offers the best chance to see some of the regions finest local talent. Like the Marquee Stage, the performers on the Home Stage are a diverse bunch, including DJ’s, celtic singers, blues howlers and urban dancers. Visit this stage to get a break from the norm and catch a rising star.

Big top books As part of the larger Bradford festival, the Big Top at Mela will feature a stimulating and inspiring mixture of books, stories, poetry and tales for the wildest of imaginations of adults and children alike. A main event of the Book Festival will be at 3pm on Saturday, as Roop Singh, who we have previously featured in the Asian Express Newspaper, will captivate families with his famous storytelling and puppet-making workshop. Attired in traditional Sikh regalia, with full beard and bright turban, Roop Singh exudes a charisma which rivets audiences of all ages to his stories of Sikh life and STORYTELLER: Join the magic customs. In fact his storytelling carpet ride with Roop Singh is so compelling that he’s capable of telling stories in Punjabi to a non-Punjabi speaking audience and not only do they enjoy it - they manage to understand it!! Other features include the common wealth storytellers, an Asian poetry session and book sharing sessions. The aim of the book festival is to appeal to everyone and to encourage reading. Bradford is proud of its literary heritage with writers such as the Bronte sisters, J.B. Priestley and contemporary modern writers such as Joolz and Robert Craig. Bradford books hopes to create awareness of its literature history whilst helping and advising the writers of the future. It’s the tents first year at the festival, so why not give it a try!

Bradford festival fever

Bradford is launching its 2005 festival, which is set to turn the city into a stage from the 17th June to 3rd July

SAY IT LOUD: Councillor Margaret Eaton (left) and Head of Theatre, Arts and Festivals for Bradford Council, Sheena Wrigley As one of the most significant annual events in the UK, this two-week extravaganza brings together a huge mix of artists and events. Bradford Festival 2005 has expanded this year to offer the most impressive line up yet. Bradford Council Leader Councillor Margaret Eaton said, “Bradford Festival is always a wonderful celebration of the creativity and talents of local people, and the district’s ethnic and cultural diversity. It’s a fabulous event for all ages to enjoy and it attracts thousands of people to a varied programme of exciting events, including the popular Mela. It is also part of the Bradford calendar and this year’s Festival promises to be better than ever.” The packed festival programme will include a performance from the NoFit State Circus presenting ImMortal2, a heart stopping theatrical event involving a spaceship style Big Top. This electrifying experience takes place between Friday 24th June and Sunday 3rd July and is not to be missed. On Friday, June 17th the hills around Bradford really will be alive with the sound of music when a prelude to ‘Bradford The Musical’ will be performed. The musical started production in 2004 and endeavours to be on stage by 2007. Its aim was to give the city’s different communities a chance to look together at their past, present & future using the performing arts. The creators of ‘Bradford The Musical” have commissioned five special pieces of music, especially for the festival, written by local composers . The music pieces take styles as diverse as Celtic, Asian, Techno, Gospel, choral and folk to evoke ‘a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences’. Schools, communities and special performers will take the stage for the Lord Mayors Carnival Parade on Saturday 25th June. This will be followed by Party

in the Square, which will feature music from Dennis Rollins, the pioneering jazz trombonist, and the Northern All Stars. Other events include local talent performing on the Festival Square Stage, Mind The Gap performing George Orwell’s Animal Farm at Lister Park and Big Sheep Productions present ‘The Big Baa-Ha’ on the 2nd July at the Alhambra Theatre. The Festival really has something for everyone and this year’s impressive line up clearly shows it will be the most popular and greatest Bradford Festival yet.

Food for thought

At the Environmental Health service we hope everyone enjoys the Mela. We have done everything we can to make sure your visit to Bradford’s Peel Park gives you a safe, fun day. We would also like you to stay healthy and well for the rest of the summer. Every year, hundreds of people within the Bradford District suffer unnecessarily from food poisoning, much of which is preventable. Here are five simple steps that should be followed when preparing and serving food: STEP 1 - Wash your hands regularly using soap and warm water Always wash them before handling food Always wash them after going to the toilet

Always wash them after touching raw meat and poultry Always wash them after touching pets Always wash them after blowing your nose STEP 2 - Cook food thoroughly Make sure that food is piping hot in the centre- make sure that the juices run clear from meat and chicken If re-heating bought food, always follow the manufacturers instructions Be extra careful with BBQ foods. It is easy to burn the outside but undercook the middle. Ensure that the food is piping hot and cooked through, with no pink remaining in burgers or kebabs

STEP 3 - Keep food cool Keep meat, chicken, milk and other perishable foods cold until ready to eat or cook Do not overload your fridge, the air needs to circulate Your fridge should be between 0 and 5ºC Use a cool bag for picnics and barbecues STEP 4 - Avoid cross contamination Always keep cooked/ready to eat food away from raw meat and poultry Don’t use the same knives and chopping boards for raw meat/poultry and cooked/ready to eat foods Store food in covered containers

YUMMY: A Mela-goer’s well stocked plate

STEP 5 - Clean as you go Wash all utensils and equipment in hot water and washing up liquid. Use an antibacterial cleaner on work surfaces, taps and fridge handles in your kitchen to kill the germs Wash dishcloths daily or use disposable cloths

Finally: If you buy food from a shop or caterer, make sure that the premises are clean and that the staff have good personal hygiene and wear clean over-clothing.

Bin it for Bradford Bradford Council has to spend thousands of pounds cleaning up the mess and litter dropped onto our streets and parks. Not having to do this would not only improve the look of our city, but save tax payer’s money.

4

Remember to Recycle. Put your wheelie bin out for collection on the proper collection day and take it in afterwards.

5

If you have large or bulky items to dispose of then ring the Council on (01274) 431000 and ask for a bulk waste collection

6

If you see anyone dumping rubbish (fly tipping) please contact the Council by telephoning (01274) 434366 and give us information.

Here are six things you can also do to help Keep Bradford Clean:

1

Do not drop litter, including this programme! Bin it for Bradford.

2

Do not dump any rubbish on the street or someone else’s land. This is a crime for which there are severe penalties.

3

Do not keep rubbish in your yard or gardens other than in the dustbin.

CLEAN SWEEP: Please keep the Mela tidy

Remember rubbish is not only an eyesore, but can attract rats and cause disease. Your help will be appreciated by the Council and your community. Thank you for reading this and enjoy your day.
